RECORD-SETTING SUCCESS

2018 ANNUAL REPORT FISCAL YEAR 2017-18

10,513 VOLUNTEERS + 106,200 HOURS = ADDED VALUE OF $2,616,768

VIP Celebrates 35th Anniversary with Record Volunteer Engagement! This anniversary is very meaningful to VIP staff. It reminds us of our past success and sparks discussion on where we’re headed in the future. The spirit of volunteerism has always been strong in Plano, but this year we saw a 28 percent increase in new volunteers engaged through our departments. Having grown to 10,513 volunteers is truly a testament to the trust and desire for engagement among staff and volunteers. We appreciate every staff member, volunteer, community member and visitor who gave their time to Plano this year - your collective impact is remarkable. In 1983, former City Manager David Griffin established VIP to encourage resident participation and to enhance City services. The first coordinator recruited 30 volunteers. By the early 2000s, environmental initiatives helped us grow to more than 3,000 volunteers. Today, engaging residents in service goes beyond age, culture, wealth and education. When Plano’s staff and volunteers team up together, their passion to keep Plano a city of excellence both enhances services and delivers new and innovative programs. The momentum of this year was propelled by a new motivation for volunteering. We frequently hear from new volunteers that they want to “give back to the city that has given them so much.” Our future lies in the passion and appreciation our residents have for our community. Whether it is excellent schools, parks, safety, healthcare or jobs residents value what Plano provides for their families. They show their appreciation by giving back. As we look to the future, I am confident the impact made by volunteers and staff will only grow and inspire future volunteers in Plano.

VIP was my introduction to the City. Walking in the door of an office did so much for my self-confidence and gave me hope. I can’t be thankful enough for VIP. Wherever you find yourself, GO VOLUNTEER! You NEVER know what impact it will make on both you and the organization. #volunteering Shari Forbes

VIP Supervisor of the Year Holly Ryckman, Davis Library Supervising volunteers is no easy task. It takes careful planning and a passion for engagement to bring in new volunteers and make them feel like part of the team. Holly Ryckman has worked with a diverse group of volunteers at Davis Library for the last six years. Raising two children in Plano, Ryckman has a great connection to volunteerism in Plano. Her sons were teen library volunteers for Library Director Libby Holtmann in 2006. When Ryckman saw how beneficial the experience was for her family she created a culture of appreciation at Davis for their volunteers, which included individuals with special needs, teenagers, adults, retirees and corporate groups. After receiving the award, Ryckman said, “I wanted to take a moment to thank Volunteers in Plano for this award. I truly value working with our volunteers as one of my greatest joys. It is so rewarding. I appreciate all the support the VIP team gives the library and feel like we have an excellent partnership. At the library, we value making connections through the community. VIP makes this possible.

City Staff Celebrate 20 Years of Giving Back Our wonderful volunteers are not the only individuals who serve Plano every day. City of Plano staff are quick to volunteer their time and collective skills to serve our residents outside of their daily responsibilities. Staff go into our community to attend career days and mentor youth at schools. They volunteer with Plano nonprofits and City projects to feed our hungry neighbors, box books for our annual book sale and provide minor home repairs. For the past 20 years, staff banded together to provide gifts and necessities to those in need during the holidays. In 2018 alone, 65 individuals, including children and senior citizens, were adopted by Plano staff so recipients did not go without holiday cheer. Thank you, City of Plano employees, for all you do to make Plano a City of Excellence.
