We appreciate your continued support of our nonprofit organization whose goal is to educate the public on the Japanese arts, ikebana in particular. We are very blessed to have the both of you in our community. In “Friendship Through Flowers” -Kathy LaDuke, Publicity Chair & VP

What a great issue! The truth? I had no idea about the scope of the plans for the new city hall until I read your article. Like others, we at the library were scratching our heads over what the big deal was. But I can certainly see why Madeira might want to up the ante a little and build itself a modern community center and recreation field. That boardwalk by the bay sounds very inviting for my daily lunch hours. Congratulations on your 20 years. You and Renee must be very proud. Assembling issues with so much information about art events and the availability of community resources is such a great benefit for residents and tourists alike. I particularly like the way you feature events at the museums downtown. I’m always amazed at how the islanders don’t want to make the drive to take advantage of the St. Pete museums, but it’s not for lack of your publicity. Here’s to 20 more! – Travis Ann Sherman, Youth Services Librarian, Gulf Beaches Public Library Thank you.. I LOVE this magazine and website!! Paradse News is the best! Michele Garner

It’s been a number of months since we ran an article about Corey Ave., (74th Ave) the main street of St. Pete Beach. The big news on Corey this season has been Jackie’s Bistro, which has joined Chill as a top-rated dining and music venue. Other than that, business changes on the street had been pretty much the same… until lately. Some of the merchants are reporting “an amazing season” Simply Perfect even expanded. Meanwhile, others have closed and ‘for lease’ signs appear in windows. Still others have opened, brand new, full of hope and anticipation. The Swigwam may have gained a friend in city hall. Terri Finnerty, the new commissioner for District 1took the race by 24 votes over incumbent Lorraine Huhn. At her election celebration at the Swigwam, Terri spoke of her support to do everything to help make Corey a destination for visitors. Kathie Hansen, owner of Corey Corner’s Antiques, one of the most involved members of the Corey Area Business Association (CABA) for most of a decade, retired at least temporarily, closing her storefront business and her role in the CABA organization. At a special meeting called for the purpose, CABA members voted unanimously to contract their Corey Sunday Fresh Market management out to Laura Garrison, a seasoned market operator from the nearby Gulfport Fresh Market. Under her guidance the Corey Sunday Market has grown, in just it’s second week under her care, to twice the size, filling much of the area used by the popular seasonal arts and craft shows that come to this historic beach’s main street, from Gulf Blvd. west to the post office. Next door to Kathie’s place, which is now available for lease, Debbie Vandeveer has decided to call it quits at the Blue Sky Boutique, Her husband Ralph is selling local organic honeys Sundays on APRIL 2014

Corey and elsewhere and says “She just needs a break, and a rest”. Three doors east, where Lornie & Rose ran Lithos Jewelers years ago, a new jewelry shop has opened up with local jewelry designer Owen Sweet in charge. Owen says “Gold is as low in price as it has been for a while, down 35% from prior highs. That makes one of my unique or custom designs a bargain. Stop in and pick up a little something for someone special for Easter, a birthday or Mothers Day. It may be a prudent place to invest some of those stock market gains”.

Across the street from Corey Corners, Cheryl West says, “Business has been unbelievable” at Paradise Gifts & Home Décor. The bulk of her business is unusual affordable gifts plus framed art, tables & lamps. She is amazed at the incredible demand she is finding for Inis, her newest line. “I was so impressed with the fresh sea scent and the way the cream feels on your skin that I told my rep I would give it a try”. It is an Irish made line of skin creams and fragrances for both men and women, and it is flying off the shelf. She included a $5 off $50 coupon in

this issue of Paradise NEWS to encourage our readers to give it a try. For people that are flying or wish to sample, there is a trial kit for about $20 with samples of three items in containers small enough to fly with. Between her shop and the presently dark Beach Theatre, there is a brand new Natural Comfort shoe store. Years ago there was a shop in downtown Tierra Verde that was not well discovered, but they are being welcomed to the Corey mix. Check out these great shoes, including brands like Mezlan, Bacco Bucci, Lacoste, Pikolinos,

Merrell, Cushe, Vibram Five Finger, Keen, Helle, MBT, Spring Step, Icon, Teva, Reef, Rainbow, Sole, Spira, Olukia. In the block west of Paradise Gifts, The Bead Shop has changed hands. Toronto Canadians Steve & Silvia Desrocher made their winter home a permanent one as they took over ownership and management. The place was practically full of Canadians when I visited, but they all said they were great admirers of Paradise NEWS so they seemed very intelligent. Next door to the Bead Shop, Sherri & Terri opened Simply Serendipity, a kind of a little café’ and a gift boutique with ‘new and repurposed unique items’ for sale. Sherri says this is her retirement gig, having recently come south from Indiana, so she WANTS to keep it small. Call her with questions, 727-301-8662. The site on St. Pete Beach previously known as Charlies Oasis, Philthy Phils, Twisted Tarpon, and Daiquiri Shak, at the west end of 75th Ave. is reopening soon as Crab Daddy’s. Daiquiri Shak retreated to its Madeira Beach location when the property changed hands. Daiquiri Shak Owner Jeremy Runo is reportedly looking at other, more long-term locations. Meanwhile, the building has been getting cosmetic improvements in anticipation of a reopening, perhaps even this month. Elsewhere in the downtown district, signs point to a future paint war. A Crowder Hardware store is expected to open some time this summer. There’s a very nice Crowder Brothers in Bradenton and Lakewood Ranch. We’ve learned, however that ours is related to the Crowder Hardware, Gun, Pawn and Gold Buying store in Spring Hill. A half block west a big sign says “Sherwin Williams - Coming Soon.” The paint company has bought the site west of the now-shuttered Riviera restaurant, and construction is expected to commence soon on a new paint store on that corner. From the Publishers... Change is Good. We’ve heard that before. Change is inevitable. We’ve heard that too! Change can be Painful. The longer we live, the more we learn how true it is that change is a force to be respected. Long-time residents of the beaches have seen a lot of changes. It seems however that, protected from the hustle and bustle of the mainland by our remoteness, even though connected by bridges, much of the impact of change is buffered somewhat. The traffic jams that happen daily during rush hours impact us little here. (Saturdays can be a different story in the height of season.) We are a little over a year into a change in our police force in St. Pete Beach, and from most reports we have received, that change has been excellent. We have lived through four years without a public school on our beach, and we are looking forward to a change in that department. Now Treasure Island is again considering a similar move. St. Pete Beach seems to be embracing change. We have a new bridge at our south entry opening this fall, after some painful construction closures that seem to be much more frequent than we were warned about in advance. Perhaps we can blame that on unpredictable rainy days. From the results of the recent municipal election it appears many of our voters were ready for a change. Our incumbent Mayor, Steve McFarlin and District 1 Commissioner Lorraine Huhn had done an admirable job, but their opponents ran great campaigns and offered the voters excellent alternatives. We commend all involved for keeping the campaign clean and honest, on a local level. We believe voters were impressed with the slate presented and were ready to see a woman in the Mayors Chair. Maria Lowe proved an impressive candidate and we are hoping to feel as good about her in three years as we do now. There are big considerations coming up. The implementation of the comprehensive plan we’ve been wrestling with for a decade including a Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) which can provide extra tax funds for infrastructure repair or replacement from commercial redevelopment after it occurs, the proper use of city buildings, including the now abandoned police station, the future of the downtown corridor that has recently been the subject of intense scrutiny by planning professionals, the long-term effect of the modified and delayed Biggert-Waters Act on flood insurance and property values, the potential for putting utility wires underground and the repaving of our city streets. For almost 20 years, Paradise NEWS has served the communities south of John’s Pass as the Premier Newsmagazine of the Barrier Islands and beyond. St. Pete Beach is the commercial heart of the barrier islands so it is generally the focus of our attention, but we try to report on activities north, south and east of us to give residents and visitors a taste of all we have in our Paradise. Now, we are trying to share with some of our residents further up the beach, too. If you are a seasonal resident headed back north this month, you can use the subscription form on page 52 to have a print copy sent to you, or you can read a copy online at our fast growing website www.paradisenewsfl.com, where 1000 of you each day are now going for information. We appreciate each and every one of you, and we love to hear from our readers, so please drive safely, stay well and stay in touch. We pray that all your changes are pleasant ones.

Madeira Bay Resort MARINA & SPA

One of Madeira Beach’s newest & best positioned resort properties is planning to construct it’s final phase.

The Madeira Bay Resort, Marina & Spa overlooks Madeira Beach’s scenic Intracoastal Waterways, steps from the pristine white-sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. The resort feature classic Mediterranean architecture, tropical landscaping, Oceans West Spa, a heated swimming pool and the Mad Beach Fish House Restaurant, with waterfront dining and cocktails. Located adjacent to Pinellas County’s #1 tourist destination, the Madeira Bay Resort complex was the brainchild of Developer Sam Lewis, who envisioned a mixed use area that would offer townhomes for residents and an all-suite hotel with supporting amenities. The site was comprised of an antiquated commercial fish house, retail and restaurants and some old termite infested cottages. All were eyesores in need of demolition. Sid Rice of Gators fame had assembled the parcels under one ownership and sold to Sam. Local architect, Jack

18 | APRIL 2014 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Bodziak who had designed projects on the Gulf beaches for over 30 years, took Sam’s dream from concept to reality. The 44-slip marina was totally redone for sport fishing and cruising boats and yachts. The first upland project after demolition was the Townhomes. With their Mediterranean architecture, waterfront location and their innovative design sold out prior to construction. By the time the new owners were moving in their townhomes, construction had begun on the resort’s first phase, a 68-suite condo resort hotel with a luxury day spa and meeting room for weddings and events. Like the townhomes, all the units in the resort were under contract prior to the first shovel being turned. The resort featuring 1, 2 and 3 bedroom accommodations, has become a destination for our northern friends as well as the local drive market. The restaurant was soon to follow and the resort was up and running.

“Our location across from the beach at the north end of Johns Pass Village, with its 100 restaurants, shops and waterfront boardwalk bring people back time and time again” says Cheryl Finnerty, Marketing Director for Travel Resort Services. TRS is a group of Travel & Real Estate companies established in Madeira Beach since 1985. She adds, “The amenities of a condo, like full kitchen, washer and dryer, multiple bedrooms and baths makes us your best vacation value”. Sam Lewis and his longtime friend, Fred Bullard of The Bullard Companies, have joined forces to finish the dream and complete the last phase. Fred brings many years of experience building throughout Florida. Lessons learned on the first phase of construction will make the final phase the most desirable of all. “The experience of selling and renting in the resort has told us what works best” said Doreen Moore of Total Realty Services as she announced the start of sales on the 44-luxury suites in the final phase. Each suite will contain 1 or 2 bedrooms, and 2 bathrooms. Many will feature an additional den or sitting room. All our accommodations will have washer and dryer, full kitchens, furniture package, balconies and, of course, the great views. Sunrises and sunsets are FREE.” The building has enclosed corridors and a secure lobby. The amenities of Madeira Bay Resort include, Day Spa, exercise room, meeting space, restaurant, marina, 24/7 desk and heated pool and spa. The established rental program, with its international marketing, will help maximize investor’s income. Pre-construction prices start at $239,900. Just 44 lucky owners will have the opportunity to become part of Madeira Beach’s largest and most successful all-suite hotel. Don’t miss this ground floor opportunity to own this great investment property.

Some Relief on Flood Insurance Hikes Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Positive legislative approvals in Congress and the Florida Legislature offer some relief to thousands of home owners and business people affected by the Biggert-Waters massive flood insurance premium increases. President Obama signed the “Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act of 2014” on March 21 (H.R. 3370). It was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives March 4 and by the U.S. Senate March 13. Key features of the bill: H.R. 3370 repeals certain sections of BW12: Repeals section 207 of BW12 which permanently restores grandfathering; Repeals the home sale trigger & lapsed policy; Limits annual rate increase to 18%; Retroactive: Refunds policyholders who purchased pre-FIRM homes after BW12 (7/6/12) and were subsequently charge higher rates; Increases funding for the FEMA Affordability Study from $750,000 to $3 million; Provides long term relief by adding an annual flood insurance surcharge of $25 fee for residential and $250 fee for commercial & secondary properties (the surcharge will be used for the NFIP reserve fund and will ensure funds are available for meeting future obligations). H.R.3370 does not affect commercial properties, secondary properties, or severe loss properties whose rates can go up 25% a year. However, rate increases triggered by a sale would be delayed for commercial and secondary properties. Meanwhile, the Florida Legislature has moved swiftly this session on advancing flood insurance legislation. The Senate Bill sponsored by Senator Jeff Brandes (R-St. Petersburg) is now on the calendar for a Senate vote. HB 581 by Rep. Larry Ahern (R-Seminole) is in the House Insurance and Banking Committee where several Committee Hearings remain. The proposed bills would give homeowners more options to purchase affordable flood insurance policies by promoting the expansion of the private flood insurance market in Florida. They also would allow coverage for additional living expenses or personal property or contents to be optional. Under the text of the proposed bills, private insurers would be allowed to offer flood insurance coverage with a policy limit in an agreed-upon amount. Positive Holehouse Commentary Jake Holehouse of St. Petersburg-based Holehouse Insurance, one of the first to 22 | APRIL 2014 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

see the debacle of Biggert-Waters (see Paradise News, October 2013 issue), offered these opinions. For Pre–FIRM (pre-1974) construction, the bill phases in the new Biggert-Waters based rates by having premium increases at a 15% per year rate increase for older pre-FIRM properties until they hit their actuarially sound rate or a private market rate becomes a better rate. Our opinion is that this is actually better than a delay that destroys the confidence of the consumer, real estate professional and insurance professional as they are not aware of the future and it is difficult to advise a client when we don’t understand the long-term ramifications. However, by phasing in the rate increase it allows time for policyholders to prepare for rate increases and gives the private market time to react to the marketplace. The phase-in rate does include a new buyer so it does not just preserve the current homeowner but it gives the current flood rate to a new policy holder as well. In terms of rates, Homeowners Choice Insurance Company has come out with a private market rate that is ultra-competitive with FEMA rates for apples to apples coverage. In addition, we will see additional private rates become competitive with more Lloyds of London availability as well as availability from other major insurance marketplaces. Right now, we are still actively writing with the private market that creates immediate relief for a homeowner. If FEMA does make changes, we will go back to FEMA to rewrite the policy. Our opinion is that the private market is here right now and actively allowing us to write new business policies. This allows for home closings to take place now, and in the worst case scenario a $4,065 flood rate is not the end of the world for most of Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties. The other major section of this bill that affects pre-FIRM rates is the FEMA 50% rule that states that a below-elevation property cannot be improved more than 50% of its value. This directly affects a homeowner’s ability to remodel a house. Under the BiggertWaters bill it states that this rule changes to be an improvement value of 30% of the structure over the lifetime of the structure. The challenge is that this is related to the dwelling value —

not the property’s overall value — so on many older waterfront residential Pre-FIRM properties. They will receive a minimum homes, the 5% to 18% annual increase PLUS a 5% ‘Catastrophic Reserve structure value might only be $150,000, which means a Fund’ fee. For realtors, Beach-based Floodzone Revisions and Floodit reduces current rates and drives confidence zone Correction in West Palm Beach have clear ‘winners.’ into the marketplace. This is better than a successfully assisted some two dozen condo delay as we now know the long-term associations in the Pinellas and Hillsborough Tom Torgersen, ramifications of the bill. Counties in reducing their premiums. President of AIA Insurance Services Torgersen: Another View Tom Torgersen, President of AIA Insurance Services in St. Pete Beach, has been in the industry for 32 years, owned a business 13 years and has covered residential insurance the past five years. “My opinion of this act,” he told Paradise News,“is that there are really no clear ‘winners.’ Some folks will get significant relief initially, but there remains a ‘glide path’ to full actuarial rates for every category of Pre-FIRM properties. “Winners include folks who purchased new policies on Pre-FIRM properties after July 6, 2012. These folks had/will have their rates increased to the Full Actuarial level on the first renewal after October 1, 2013. The Act above provides for refunds to them with the expected refund to be the difference between the Full Actuarial rate and the subsidized rate. Currently, we do not have an expected refund date for any of these policies. Also on the plus side are those with new policies on Pre-FIRM properties in place after last October 1. These folks will pay the subsidized rate versus the Full Actuarial rate. Again, timing is an issue as someone needing flood insurance today would be quoted the Full Actuarial Rate. “Not much change is seen for owners of primary

Ken Morris, founder and president of Floodzone Revisions, said,“We currently have a 100% success rate with regards to LOMR (Letter Of Map Revision). Since 2009 our firm has successfully represented about two dozen commercial properties in seven Florida counties, including 13 condominium associations. In Tampa Bay, these include Sandpearl Condominium, Clearwater Beach; Ashford Green, Tampa; Land’s End, Treasure Island; and Bella Costa, Dunedin.” He explained the situation and remediation process. A LOMR is a detailed, technical application that is performed and submitted to the local Floodplain Administrator (FPA) and FEMA for review and approval. A LOMR changes one or more flood zones, Base Flood Elevations (BFEs), or Wave Crest Elevations (WCEs) on FEMA-issued Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). LOMRs change “V” flood zones to “A” or “X” flood zones,“A” flood zones to “X” flood zones, or reduce BFEs or WCEs. These changes show reduced risks for flood damage & yield corresponding reductions in flood insurance premiums. Unfortunately, many effective FIRMs in existence today that determine flood insurance rates contain flood zones that are APRIL 2014

erroneous or antiquated. Most Florida FIRMs were originally created using large-scale, county-wide data that did not incorporate “site-specific” data into the modeling and mapping of the corresponding flood zones. Additionally, many Florida FIRMs are over 10 years old and some are more than 20. The flood zones of these FIRMs are no longer accurate due to new construction and changes in land-use, shoreline location and topography that have occurred since the FIRMs became effective. A LOMR revises the effective FIRM, changing flood zones and/or BFEs or WCEs, based on more accurate, sitespecific data used in the modeling and mapping procedures. When a property is located within an inaccurate FIRM, a LOMR can be performed at least 75% of the time. At Land’s End, a 177-unit Gulf-front complex in Treasure Island, Cal Brummett, manager for association management firm Associa Gulf Coast, noted the complex was originally in the VE zone, considered the most hazardous because it generally is beachfront.“When our annual flood insurance premium was close to $100,000,” he said,“we hired Floodzone Revision to file the appeal. They successfully demonstrated to FEMA that the growth of dunes and vegetation had created a natural barrier against waves. Last December, FEMA moved Land’s End to the AE zone, a lower-risk classification. As a result, our premium dropped to about $9,000, and we estimate savings of about $800,000 over the next eight years alone.”

At 162-unit Sunset Vistas, another Treasure Island waterfront complex, built in 2006, General Manager George Hoch told Paradise News,“When our flood insurance premiums hit about $400,000 in 2011, we knew we had to do something. FEMA flood maps showed that the complex had a high risk of wave-related damage that resulted in a VE-zoned high premium. We had originally looked at possible mitigation savings, but the angle of our beach made a difference. To get the flood map changed, we turned to Floodzone Correction, with agent Stephen Gill and President Dan Freudenthal doing a great job for us that resulted in a change to AE zone with a steep premium drop to about $18,000 in 2013. Our only out-of-pocket cost was about $10,000 for a special topographical map, with our consultant’s additional engineering observations very helpful. Their fee was 50% of our first year savings – about $190,000 of the $380,000 total. We will absolutely save a lot of money going forward.” Stay tuned with Paradise News for continuing updates on the flood insurance situation and the impact on Pinellas County homes, condos and businesses. FINAN C E

Limp In…Leap Out…

with Chris Licata

COULD GOLD BE GETTING READY TO SHINE AGAIN? For more ten years, GOLD defied reality and outperformed the major stock indexes consistently. Then, in 2011, its meteoric run seemed to top and collapse. While gold’s technical indicators have been demoralizing, its fundamentals couldn’t seem more encouraging. Could the past hold the “key” for gold’s future? If one looks back into economic history, he/she would find that gold’s peaks and valleys have in-fact simply been a counter-cyclical movement to the ebb and flow of the dominant currency and paper assets of a particular era. While times were good, i.e. no depressions or destabilizing wars, economies and the societies that they underpinned thrived and the value of gold “waned”—until inflation returned. Similarly, the past six-plus decades have seen the world at relative peace. Communism failed and has embraced capitalism. The absolute supremacy of the American Dollar over all forms of money including gold, which ultimately becomes money in times of crisis, has been the integral part of American dominance in the world politically, economically and culturally. As a result, this era of “Belle Epoque” has produced a system which has led to innovations the world has never seen before. Medically, scientifically and astronomically we have excelled not just by our technology but by the ability of our financial system to recreate itself over-and-over again without creating deadly inflation. Well, the gold pundits must be right then—that is, you don’t need gold if there is no inflation—WRONG! Traditionally, most of the time when gold shines, granted it is due to inflationary pressures. Gold and Gold shares are held as a hedge. But, in sharp contrast to such times is when gold replaces paper money as a “medium of exchange” and becomes an absolute “store of value”. This is when Deflationary forces (not inflationary) rule the day. Demand seemingly dries up overnight for most everything.

Unemployment rises and the integrity of underlying currencies plunge along with confidence in the system. A deflationary spiral develops and engulfs everything into an economic abyss that is all but impossible to escape. Current market conditions indicate that enormous GLOBAL deflationary pressures have been increasing. Stock markets around the world have been on a parabolic run and are now beginning to rollover. Commodities have been falling and gold, silver and their miners have severely underperformed all sectors the past couple of years. Paper currencies have sold off against one another and the continued immunity in U.S. dollar is questionable at best. Follow—The U.S. is a nation with a massive trade imbalance and a growing federal debt. We currently have very low interest rates but are the most indebted country in the world. If one was to look closer, one could see that the dollar has been consistently devalued over the years. There is no doubt of this as we see it in the prices that we pay for, food , fuel, utilities and insurance, ect. With more federal borrowing and money printing, the dollar will continue to devalue over time and contribute to global deflationary pressures as the United States cannot remain the buyer of first, last and always resort. Gold being priced in dollars will rise in both nominal and real terms since all currencies are being devalued simultaneously, then all currencies are really simply being devalued against gold which remember becomes the ultimate form of money in times of crisis. Gold and shares in Gold mining companies may offer an “anchor” in a stormy global sea of finance at this time. Investors should be aware of the inherent extreme volatility pertaining to investing in the gold sector. Only 5-10% of one’s financial net worth is generally recommended with an investment horizon of at least 3-5 years.

WEBSITES By Jenna Laine info@Digitaleel.com 727.368.0270

BANNED by Google? Yes, it can Happen!

If your business has a website, you may already know that not all web designers and marketing companies operate within the same set of rules. This can leave website owners (that’s you), stuck in a jam if your site is found to be in violation of Google’s Quality Guidelines and suddenly penalized, falling out of search engine rankings completely and subsequently losing business. You can avoid such fiascos by learning more about these guidelines and ensuring that whoever is responsible for the design, search engine optimization, marketing and upkeep of your site follows them. Below are some deceptive practices you’ll want to avoid. Keep in mind, these are just a few examples. Cloaking Cloaking refers to showing users something different from what the search engines see. Whether it’s white text on a white background, black text on a black background or hidden links, this is a clear violation of Google’s Quality Guidelines. We sometimes encounter this when a customer comes to us for a consultation after working with a previous design company. One way to catch this is to click and drag your mouse across an entire page, highlighting it. Does text suddenly appear that wasn’t there before? If so, that’s a major problem. Loading pages with irrelevant keywords This is also known as “keyword stuffing” and is an attempt to load a page with various keywords in an unnatural way as to fool search engines. It’s an amateurish SEO technique that may have worked back in the 1990s, but in today’s world, it can get you penalized, not to mention your site’s visitors won’t have a very enjoyable experience. The key is to create engaging content that speaks to both site visitors and lets the search engines know what your site is about.

26 | APRIL 2014 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

Link schemes Link schemes involving excessive reciprocal links are also a clear violation of Google guidelines. Reciprocal links involve two sites linking back to one another, a la, “You link to me, I’ll link to you.” For two companies who have a legitimate partnership, such as a limousine company and a wedding planner, that is permissible, but keep it very limited. Reciprocal linking for the sole purpose of manipulating search engines is the big issue. Many sites who engaged in this type of behavior were hit by Google’s Penguin webspam algorithm update. You can learn more about Penguin and other Google updates by visiting Google Webmaster Central’s blog at: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com. Excessive ads Google has made it clear that sites with excessive advertising, particularly in the top portion or ‘above the fold,’ with little content or content that is difficult to locate, will be devalued. As Google spokesperson Matt Cutts put it, “If you have ads obscuring your content, you might want to think about it.” Cutts emphasized that websites should always aim to enrich the visitor’s web-browsing experience, not frustrate them. “Do they see content or something else that’s distracting or annoying?” If you do have a site that allows advertising, such as an online magazine or newspaper, there are tactful ways of featuring ads without violating the rules. Bottom line If it feels wrong, don’t do it. If it sounds too good to be true, don’t do it. And if you don’t know, ask. The right company will be transparent about the process and willing to answer your questions so you understand what they’re doing to help you. As a final rule of thumb: Cutting corners and engaging in questionable SEO tactics can get you immediate results, but they may be short-lived.

GET REAL ABOUT PROPERTY Travels Through Real Estate Law

BY THOMAS A. BRODERSEN, ESQ.

WE LOVE ELIZABETH WARREN! I have said many times (and say today) that the big Wall Street Banks cannot win a foreclosure without misleading the Courts in some fundamental way. This is because of the gross dereliction of their duty to properly document mortgage loans as they securitize them. Still, one must prove very specific defects in the Bank’s case to win in Court for the little guy, the homeowner. People may think they can learn all about this stuff on the internet, and represent themselves in Court to save money. Many of these people live in motel rooms on 34th Street now, having lost everything. That is because the politicians continue to do everything they can to serve their moneyed masters on Wall Street, and because there really is something to this law business. People who would never think they could perform their own appendectomies fire pleadings off to the Court without any real idea of the consequences of that action. We entered the practice of law because we know that we can help honest people navigate the complicated, hazardous environment of the legal system, if we work hard enough and dig in far enough to the law as it develops in this still relatively new field

of practice. We hate it every time we talk to or read about American families that have been taken down by Wall Street. United States Senator Elizabeth Warren, for her part, has done something real about it. Her legacy, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) appears to be poised to make a real difference. We had heard, from wellinformed sources, that the floodgates of foreclosures would open up again after the new year. We kept wondering why only a trickle of new cases were being filed. The reason appears to be the CFPB! The banks seem to be getting “shy” about filing. It seems that the CFPB is getting serious about investigating those guys. Mortgage giant Ocwen was ordered to pay two billion dollars in homeowner relief for their sins, and others will also get nicked. That’s probably also why we’re seeing more flexibility from lenders in mediation. One (anonymous) mortgage servicer, in a moment of rare candor, said what we’ve said all along: if the truth comes out, banks can’t win foreclosures. But you need a lawyer.

As the waters in the Tampa Bay area and offshore warm, fishing begins to kick into high gear, and often this includes boating both inshore and offshore. It is crucial to remember that waters anywhere, especially in Tampa Bay, around the Sunshine Skyway, and offshore, can not only pose a threat but can be extremely dangerous. Every year, Tampa Bay and the waters off shore in the Gulf claim the lives of boaters who naively believed “it can’t happen to me.” Respect the sea is imperative for safety and survival. The following is a list of the basic things boaters need to be aware of to operate safely. 1. PAY ATTENTION to the WEATHER. As serious as bad weather can be on land, it will usually be more dangerous if you are on the water. High winds, lightening, and heavy seas, among many other things can develop rapidly and threaten your life and those of all on board a boat. You need not only respect the sea, but also respect the weather. Check your marine weather radio and local newscasts every time before you take your boat out. 2. IF YOU GO OFFSHORE, GET AN EPIRB. An Emergency Position Emergency Radio Beacon (EPIRB) may save your life. They are available online and at most local boating equipment stores. They can range in cost from about $350.00 to well over $1,000.00 depending on how much you wish to spend, but no matter what the cost, off shore boaters can’t afford to be without one. They can literally mean the difference between life & death on the sea. Some EPIRB’s activate automatically and can provide the Coast Guard with an almost instantaneous readout of your exact location. In the best

of conditions, people in the water can be difficult for rescuers to see, and in heavy seas they can be almost impossible to locate, unless you have an EPIRB. 3. FILE A “FLOAT PLAN”! This is a lot simpler than it sounds and basically is letting someone you know what your plans are and how to contact you. You can download and print out of the US Coast Guard approved Float Plan at www.floatplancentral.org. You can complete all of the basic information on the form before you print it, and then simply write in the information on your individual boating trips. In addition, the download contains a boating emergency guide. 4. LEARN BASIC BOATING & SAFETY SKILLS. While experienced and trained boaters can and do make mistakes, I am astonished at the incompetence of many people at the helm of a boat. Unless you have the knowledge and skill to handle a boat and any of the hundreds of things that can go wrong, it can and often does lead to unnecessary property damage, injury and often the loss of life. The US Coast Guard Auxiliary offers a course entitled Boating Skills and Seamanship in many areas around Tampa Bay. For more information or to register for the free course please send an email to foglejcgaux@tampabay.rr.com or call 727-8981324 and you will be advised of the nearest Boating Skills and Seamanship Course. Just do it. If you follow this information it may save your life and/or those of your family and friends. Enough said. Loren D. Reuter serves as a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 7-2 St. Petersburg, Florida.

The Salty Rim Grill Refocuses on Quality Food by Peter A. Roos The Salty Rim Grill, 9524 Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach, is a lively watering hole at the southeast base of the Blind Pass Bridge, with a great sunset deck overlooking “the pass” and Sunset Beach. Its kitchen, which is well known for turning out memorable cuisine, has refocused on fresh, local quality food. With the hiring of a new in-house chef, George Lacagnina, who has recently introduced an entirely new menu reminiscent of his local experience at Tampa’s Mise en Place, Side Burns and the New City Grille. “The “Salty Rim” refers to the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, so the new menu items include fresh local foods prepared with flavors from Caribbean, Mexican, and Floribbean inspiration, with some Asian thrown in, using spices and fruit flavors, especially citrus. “Every ingredient is in the recipes by design,” says George, who fancies himself a food ambassador. The Salty Rim’s new general manager, JD, is a Treasure Island resident, with 9 years experience at the Red Mesa on 4th Street and years before that at the Pier House Grille in Gulfport. J.D. says his goal is for customers to experience “terrific and attentive” service. “It’s great to be working with George, who has the kitchen under control. We seem to be constantly training new servers here, on the beach, but we now have some who have been with us through a busy season, so we are ready to handle the best the residents and summer visitors can ask of us. The menu is bold, and folded, easier to read and even to handle than the prior one. Some of my favorite appetizers are still there, the award-winning Key West Conch Chowder, and the often special soup of the day, Seafood Ceviche Margarita, Bong Bong Shrimp, Fiesta Calamari Poblano Queso, Montego Bay Jerked Wings and Renee’s favorite, the Oyster Bar Junk. It appears the prices mostly stayed the same or went up or down a dollar. Some of the new items are especially creative.

The Avocado Almond Frita ($6.90) is a fresh Avocado

sliced and crusted in an Almond shell, deep-fried & drizzled with Mango Scotch Bonnet Jam and a side of Chipolte Lime Aoli. The Ropa Vieja Brisket ($8.90) served on crispy cilantro garlic tostones are full of subtle flavors. There’s a Southwest Togarachi Tuna Poke, with wasabi guacamole & black sesame ginger mango salsa. All salad dressings are made in-house for a nice variety of fresh salads. You can get Chef & Caesar in small ($3.90) and large ($6.90). Greek ($9.90), Asian Tuna ($13.90) and Spinach Salad ($9.90) to which can be added Chicken ($4.90) Shrimp or Steak ($6.90). The “Between the Buns” section starts out with the ever popular Rim and BBQ Beach Burgers ($8.90) and ($9.90) adding a spicy blackened burger with blue cheese, and a Ropa Vieja sandwich ($8.90) along with Buffalo and Santa Fe Chicken ($8.90) or Oyster Po Boy ($12.90) For entrees, ($14 - $24), try the new Mole Braised Short Ribs sprinkled with cilantro goat cheese polenta and topped with pineapple salsa which tops the list. Other exotic dishes like Pina Colada Chicken, Pepper-fried Tuna Steak, Chimmi Churri Steak, Blackened Shrimp with Savory Pork Mofongo and Island Coconut Seafood Stew promise gastronomic adventure. Add two full liquor bars, one indoors, one out, a shaded sunset deck, live entertainment and our sensational weather and you have the makings of agreat date or party. Salty Rim is open every day 11 am to 10 pm - weeknights and 3 am Friday & Saturday. We have sampled and enjoyed a number of the new dishes offered and so far give our complete approval. They even do a great job filling carry out orders. If you haven’t tried the Salty Rim lately, treat yourself to a visit. Tell your waitress your friends at Paradise NEWS recommended the place.

www.tampabaywatch.org. McKay Bay is an ecologically important estuary located in the heart of a heavily industrialized area in the City of Tampa that has suffered for many years. McKay Bay provides habitat to over 200 bird species and historically supported healthy fisheries. The goal of Tampa Bay Watch’s Community Oyster Reef Enhancement (CORE) program is to increase the oyster population in Tampa Bay and at the same time, provide habitats for small organisms, prevent erosion, improve water quality and promote fish and wildlife habitats. Oyster shell bars will be constructed similar to natural oyster communities found along shoreline areas throughout Tampa Bay. Fossilized oyster shell from local shell mines provide a hard surface for oyster larvae to settle upon and grow, eventually forming a natural reef.

GULF BEACHES SCHOOLS UPDATE

‘Up-tempo’ for Gulf Beaches Schools Story by STEVE TRAIMAN Photos by Heidi Leply, Aloha Photography and Jim Tizzano - www.JimTizzanoPhotography.com

Parents and students who saw the only public elementary school on the Gulf Beaches close in 2009 have a much brighter outlook for the new school year.

The Pinellas School Board will reopen Gulf Beaches Elementary in St. Pete Beach and King’s Highway in Clearwater this fall as K-5 technology magnet programs. As a result, the Board of the Academy by the Sea charter school, which had sought the Gulf Beaches site as its primary location, has suspended its current application and offered its support to the new tech school program. Also on St. Pete Beach, St. John Vianney Catholic School reports a 75% enrollment increase and many new programs and facility enhancements these past four years.

Gulf Beaches Reopening The Pinellas School Board voted unanimously March 11 to approve the reopening at the former Gulf Beaches and Kings Highway Elementary Schools this fall for grades K-5 as “ Centers for Innovation and Digital Learning,” as dubbed by Superintendent Mike Grego when he introduced the idea last December. Both schools were closed in 2009 along with six other campuses due to declining enrollment, and the County has not opened a new school in the past decade.

JIM TIZZANO

Maximum enrollment is up to 348 at Gulf Beaches and up to 232 at Kings Highway, with applications for both schools available online from March 12 to 17. About 200 people attended a School Board open house the prior evening. Total applications received at the March 17 deadline were 249 for Gulf Beaches and 141 for Kings Highway, according to School Board spokesperson Melanie Marquez Parra. She said,“We are very pleased with the response that was received. We opened up applications again for open spots during the Late Application Period that began the end of March.” Half the seats at each grade level are reserved for students who live in the previously closed schools’ zones. For Gulf Beaches, this is the previous Gulf Beaches zone on the barrier island of St. Pete Beach. For Kings Highway, this is the previous

Kings Highway and North Ward zones, including the barrier island of Clearwater Beach and Island Estates. Another 20% are reserved for students not receiving prior zoned school priority, but living closest to each school. The remaining 30% will be assigned by random number lottery from each school‘s North or South application area. In coming years, both campuses also could serve middle school students. Students at each “new” school will get a laptop or tablet to access online programs focused on boosting reading skills and FCAT performance. Through the “flipped classroom” practice, students would watch views or Web programs online outside of school when traditionally they would be doing homework. They would use this information during next day’s class, in effect, extending the school day. It will cost an estimated $680,000 to renovate both schools for the new tech program, with work beginning soon in-house by the Pinellas County Schools Operations Department. Applications for Principal at both schools are being taken by the School Board. Dr. Grego told Paradise News, “The opening of our two Centers for Innovation and Digital Learning at Gulf Beaches and Kings Highway elementary schools greatly expands choices for parents in Pinellas County. We’ve seen an increased desire among parents to have more choices in the educational options for their children. In an effort to meet that need, we are expanding the number of magnets and other application programs at all levels throughout the County. We have numerous programs to pick from, and we invite parents to inquire about schools that are of interest to them.”

Michael A. Grego, Ed.D., began as superintendent on Sept. 26, 2012, a day after his contract was approved by the Pinellas County School Board. Dr. Grego was selected following a national search. Before joining the Pinellas County School District, Dr. Grego served as associate professor at the University of Central Florida. An educator with more than three decades of experience in public education, Dr. Grego spent five months as Florida’s Interim Chancellor of K-12 Education in 2011. From 2008 to 2011, Dr. Grego served as superintendent of Osceola County, overseeing dramatic academic improvements in the district. Dr. Grego began his career in Hillsborough County as a teacher in 1980. He climbed the ranks over his 28-year career in the district to become Assistant Superintendent for Technical, Career and Adult Education in 2000 and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and instruction in 2002. A New York native, Dr. Grego earned a bachelor of science degree in Technology Education from the State University of New York in Oswego. He holds two master’s degrees, one in Industrial Technology Education from Illinois State University and another in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida. He also holds a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from the University of South Florida. Dr. Grego has received numerous recognitions and awards, including two in recent years for his efforts to promote arts education. In 2010, the Florida Alliance for Arts Education recognized him with an annual Superintendent Leadership Award for his efforts to promote arts education, and the previous year, the Florida Music Educators Association named him Superintendent of the Year for his ardent support of music education.

Academy by the Sea Options Last November 12, the St. Pete Beach-based Academy by the Sea Board got approval from the Pinellas School Board for its application to open what would be the District’s only Montessori middle school and at that time the only public school on the barrier islands. At that meeting, parents, students and then St. Pete Beach Mayor Steve McFarlin noted the need that school would fill for their community, with about 1,900 families with children enrolled in public and private schools. Academy by the Sea would also have offered options for other area Montessori students. Included were two private Montessori schools — SPB elementary school Montessori by the Sea and Alegria Montessori School in St. Petersburg, as well as Gulfport Elementary School’s Montessori magnet program. There have been no Montessori middle schools in Pinellas — public or private — and there are no Montessori high schools. The St. Pete Beach City Commission unanimously passed a resolution in support of Academy by the Sea last year and has a “universal agreement to re-establish a school in the city,” said Commissioner Jim Parent. Prime location for the new charter school was the former Gulf Beaches Elementary School, with other alternative sites on Treasure Island and Madeira Beach. With the School Board approval of new tech magnet schools at the former Gulf Beaches and Kings Highway locations, on behalf of the Academy by the Sea Board, Chairperson Luann Schecht said,“After meeting with

Superintendent Michael Grego, Academy by the Sea has determined that our continued efforts to open a charter school would be duplicative of efforts by the Pinellas County School Board to open its own school at the Gulf Beaches facility to serve the same student population. Academy by the Sea will, therefore, suspend its current charter application. We will remain in contact with Dr. Grego and the School Board to assess the means by which our volunteer force can contribute toward the new school at the Gulf Beaches location.” Joe Schulte of Uni International Transportation & Logistics in St. Pete Beach, an Academy by the Sea Board member, told Paradise News,“As a father of two elementary age children and SPB resident, I was excited with the prospect of a public school option returning to the area. Our children have been in the Montessori system since age 3, as we found that it expands the child’s mind to see the entire world around them as an opportunity to learn, and learning is positive and exciting. I became involved as a Board member for a public charter school seeking to affect positive change and based on the Montessori methodology as it appeared to be a step in the right direction. The result was charter approval after two years of efforts and a spectacular education program developed and codified by Board member Sarah Byrd. Soon after the charter was approved, the Pinellas County Schools announced they were re-opening the Gulf Beaches school as a ‘Technology Magnet School.’The goal was and is for our local children to have a local public school option and I am in full support of this positive change.”

St. John Vianney Progress Jill Hudson, Principal of St. John Vianney Catholic School, told Paradise News,“I’m very passionate about St. Johns, as I grew up on St. Pete Beach and graduated myself from St. Johns in 1991. Talk about full circle! “When I started as a teacher in the 2010 school year we had about 147 students, and this year have a current enrollment of 259 students, with a capacity of about 280, Much of this is due to my predecessor, Dr. Kristy Swol, and her dedicated vision plan committee (see Paradise News, March 2009 issue). “In 2011, St. John’s became Pinellas County’s first International Baccalaureate (IB) world school for the middle years program (MYP) grades 6 to 8. IB provides a framework of learning that encourages all students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and to the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement, qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century. In addition, academic enrichment classes now offered to advanced students in grades 1 to 5. “Our performing arts program has expanded in the past few years to include a children’s praise and worship band for grades 3 to 8 in addition to our weekly band program. We are in our second year of offering a junior international thespian society program for our middle school students. The performing arts department also presents a Broadway Junior Musical each spring in the Monsignor Trainor

St. John Vianney offers many tuition assistance opportunities to qualifying families including, Step Up For Students (SUFS) that offers scholarships for low-income students in grades K to 12. The program, which administers the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program, empowers families to choose the school that best meets their child’s needs. Principal Hudson emphasizes, “Our pastor, Father John Blum, offers unbelievable support to the school. Our IB program has been stellar for us in our continuing progress, while other Catholic schools in the Tampa Bay area have closed due to lack of support and students.”

Competitive sports teams include flag football, volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball and track & field Cheerleading is also available for grades 6 to 8. Extra-curricular activities include golf club, running club, spirit squad, yearbook, safety patrols, student council and homework club. “From a facilities perspective, we’ve taken on small construction projects every year, modifying and expanding school offices, adding a decorative security fence and playground shade structure, remodeling classrooms and bathrooms, among other projects.”

Professional Managers Strive To Maximize Potential of Hotels and Condo-Hotel Properties. by Peter A. Roos Florida’s tourism economy is booming. Record number of heads in beds means record bed tax revenues. While marketing directors of hotels and resorts take the bows for improving revenues year over year, they may not be doing as well as they could, according to hotel management consultant, Gilles Arditi of Southwind Hospitality. (SWH) He should know. One of his company’s specialties is managing properties in receivership. “Managing a hotel, resort or condo-hotel these days requires attention to revenues, expenses, décor, ambiance, service, positioning, branding, marketing and more. Some of it comes down to knowing what needs to be done and hiring the right team to accomplish it. Success also benefits from a knowledge of the internet and strategies to maximize revenues from OTA’s, the online travel agencies like Trip Advisor, Orbitz and Expedia. Knowing which airlines bring visitors to your market and participating in joint promotions can also help. Getting your guests to tell their Facebook friends how much fun they are having at your resort is another great strategy.” The president of St. Petersburg-based Southwind Hospitality LLC is in the growing business of turning hotels around in Florida and nationwide. The firm, which includes partners Chad Coldren and Stephen Page, addresses the basic aspects of hotel operation, such as safety of the premises and time spent turning rooms, to outside issues like exposure on Internet booking sites and supplier contracts. Stephen is also involved in building two new properties in Madeira Beach. “Most of the money is made in the rooms, the bar and the restaurants” says Arditi, with 20 years of hospitality management experience, who was regional vice president of operations for Dallas-based Prism Hotels 36 | APRIL 2014 | ParadiseNewsFL.com

& Resorts before starting Southwind. SWH uses revenue management extensively to create demand at all of their hotels and resorts. “The easiest part is to cut costs, but the most difficult part is to grow revenue. The goal is to rent the right room to the right guest at the right price, every time!” SWH manages several hotels in the Tampa Bay area: Economy Inn, Inn on the Beach and Quality Hotel on the Beach, all in Clearwater; and SWH will be managing the brand new Hampton Inn and Suites in Clearwater Beach. They took over the Howard Johnson Inn & Suites in Jacksonville after recommending changes a month earlier that led to a 65% increase in occupancy and 25% higher revenue. Some fixes are simple, according to Arditi. For instance, it should take housekeepers no more than a half-hour to clean each room. Green initiatives such as skipping linen or towel changes for guests staying over can help save time, and there are also environmentally friendly methods of cleaning bathrooms that save time & money. When new management is hired at a hotel, Southwind goes through its a checklist of possible changes, determining whether staffing is right for average occupancy and whether contracts for supplies and services should be renegotiated. Guests hardly notice these changes if done correctly” Arditi says. “Our responsibility is to cash flow the property,” he says. However, he adds that it is also the

manager’s responsibility to let an owner know whether the efforts are a lost cause and that a hotel would need to be locked up completely, unless the owner is able and willing to reposition the hotel into a more contemporary facility. Arditi and his partners — Coldren, vice president of operations and a certified hotel administrator, and Page, a veteran real estate developer— can boast prior success with hotel turnarounds. At the Quality Beach Resort in Clearwater Beach, an e-commerce strategy was put in place resulting in more than $1.5 million in new revenue from Expedia. Targeting hotels to nearby businesses can also generate room nights, Arditi advises. “The owners have to find a niche for their hotels,” says Arditi. Often that goes beyond tourism. Hotels along the Gulf Coast may enjoy a boost from winter tourism or Major League Baseball spring training, but that’s only good for a few months of an entire year, he points out. Arditi sees opportunity in the Paradise NEWS readership area. Owners wanting to retire as well as owners wanting a full service management company should consider hiring SWH since we provide a turnkey solution to all aspects of hotel, and condo hotel management. SWH can be found online at www.southwindhospitality.com or call their office (727) 803-6926, or Gilles Arditi on his mobile number 469-286-9514.

Johns Pass Fishing Report 3/26/14 INSHORE- Cas Hans, of Delaware, has been fishing from the beach behind our shop a lot this past week. He was picking off some large sheepshead from underneath our main dock on dead shrimp with a 2ot hook. The weight he needed depended on the tide, but he was fishing flat on the bottom the whole time with great success. Tom McDowell, a St. Petersburg local, was fishing under Johns Pass bridge with a gulp jig catching nice flounder. He was working it slow along the bottom when he hooked the nice ones. Marty Jensen, from Homestead Florida, and Sam Cunningham from Indiana were both fishing from the North jetty of Johns pass with live shrimp on the bottom and were both catching nice flounder. Marty’s biggest one was over 18 inches! Jamie Charlton, another St. Petersburg local, was fishing further down the jetty with live shrimp catching speckled trout on a bobber and sheepshead off the bottom. Mike Miller, from Seminole, and Rick Jones, from St. Pete were both fishing from the beach north of the jetty catching nice whiting in the surf. Mike was using live shrimp on the bottom and Rick was using squid. The mackerel are thicker now, but when we took catch information the bite was weak due to the cooler water following last week’s cold front. It took 4 days or so for the temperature to make a come-back. NEAR SHORE - THE KINGFISH BITE IS ON! Our five hour Am half day today brought home fourteen keeper kings!

They were skyrocketing left and right. Last Sunday the water temp hit 72 degrees and it was like someone turned on the kingfish bite switch. We brought in 6 Sunday between our two half days and the all day trip. Monday’s double half days brought in a total of seven. Today’s (3/24/14) half day got 14, who knows how many the all day will bring in, but were expecting a ton! The mackerel are around too, but now our focused has shifted to kingfish. Our first shark trip did well bringing home a 7ft black tip shark! We are starting to see more of these toothy critters coming up as the water warms. OFFSHORE- We haven’t had an overnight trip lately, but did run a long-range 12 hour trip last Thursday. We were super successful too! Not only did we haul in 25 or more, nice keeper sized jacks. We also brought home 6 really nice sized African pompano. Check out our Facebook for the great photos from this trip. We also caught two really nice cobias out there as well. Plus, we had mangrove snapper, vermilions, lanes & some yellowtail! UP NEXT AT HUBBARD’S MARINA We have gotten a new bait freezer in our shop at Hubbard’s Marina! With the new room we have seriously increased our frozen bait selection. We now carry five lb. boxes of cigar minnows, three lb. bags of baby octopus, rock shrimp, clam strips, sand fleas, shrimp and squid. Were working to secure frozen oysters and fiddler crabs! Also, added a beer cooler to our shop! Now you can get all your tackle, bait and beer in the same place for shore fishing! Or you can

FINANCE - cont’ d from pg. 25 History reflects that in 1929 (the last great deflationary economic period) if one placed 5-10% of their portfolio in gold and gold shares, your portfolio was made whole by 1936 just 7 years after the crash. If you didn’t, you waited until 1954 just to get your principle back, and you did it without taking dividends. Could History be clamorously crying out to individual investors to DIVERSIFY EFFECTIVELY NOW into gold and gold shares? The underlying fundamentals of our problems here in the U.S. whatever one wants to make of them have persisted for far too long for investors to be lackadaisical or Pollyannish. The prevailing political and economic perspectives clearly suggests that MORE OF THE SAME money printing and debt creation is coming!

33rd Year of

Tropical Heatwave ! One of the longest running festivals in the country, Tropical Heatwave often described as a manifestation and celebration of the sense of community that WMNF has created. The Heatwave tradition of extraordinary and eclectic live bands continues this year in two nights,

May 9 & 10. Ybor City’s Cuban Club Mainstage - will showcase top bands on both nights. The festival starts on Friday evening with three stages in and around the Cuban Club and New World Brewery. On Saturday the festival spreads from the Cuban Club area to include new venues on or near Ybor City’s main drag, 7th Avenue. These new venues include Crowbar, Carmine’s Courtyard, the Market on 7th, and the Orpheum. To help Heatwavers get from the Cuban Club to the Orpheum open-air Jolley Trolley buses be traveling back and forth, stopping at all the Heatwave venues on Saturday evening.

The criteria for booking bands and artists for Tropical Heatwave has always been musical excellence, strong visual appeal, fun, and a high energy level. This year the lineup could be our best, with:

Beach Therapy

It doesn’t take much these days to convince yourself that the world is a crazy, crowded, & demanding place, your life a mess of civilized stress. Need therapy?

by Marianne Klingel

reat yourself to the beach on a sunny spring day. You may or may not be a tourist; it doesn’t matter. Natives need peace and quiet, too. Take little with you, perhaps a bag and a book and some suntan lotion; leave everything else behind. Stretch out on a towel so you can get close to the earth and let the worries run out of your head and into the sand. Most importantly, banish those thoughts about everything you should be doing. Just lie there and let the beach soothe your soul. Here on Florida’s Gulf coast, a spring day is layered with sensations: warm sun, cool breeze, damp sand. The thermometer may say seventytwo, but the sea breeze can bring goose bumps and renting a cabana from Pat, the leathery old beach concessionaire, is not a bad idea. In its shelter you feel toasty warm. And that’s a good thing, because then you can close your eyes and enjoy the sounds of the birds, people and waves. They blend together with a quiet rhythm that finally silences the endless inner chatter. Some people like a radio on the beach, but the music of nature usually does the trick. The best thing about the beach in the spring is the sun. Located in the southwestern sky, it shines clear and white, a distant cousin to the yellow summer sun. It may be a cliché’ to say it sparkles on the water like diamonds, but in truth it does, so brilliantly it takes your breath away. It’s almost impossible to be

depressed while looking at that sun sparkle and reflecting on your relatively a-okay place in the world. A renourishment project down the beach adds a unique ambiance. Odors of seaweed, shells and fish rise from the prehistoric sand brought to daylight by the dredge. Engineers have placed huge vinyl tubes called “sand bladders” near the tide line; designed to stabilize the beach, they bear remarkable resemblance to a pod of beached whales. Meanwhile, the Gulf rolls in and out, tolerant of man’s folly but hardly influenced by it. The sea will continue to have its way with the sand. Allow this fact to make you feel oddly happy, regardless of whether your tax dollars are involved or not. Spring beach days are shorter than summer ones. As five o’clock nears, the sea dazzles brighter and the air nips cooler. Your heart longs to stay, but those goose bumps say it’s time to go. Before you do, pause for a moment to absorb a little more of the serenity. It is good to set aside the daily madness and remember that we are part of the earth, in all its beauty and mystery and awe-inspiring eternity. The truth is, our lives are hugely blessed and we are fortunate in more ways than not. Take that gratitude with you and, when you feel it slipping away, come back for another afternoon of therapy at the beach. In spite of man’s best efforts, it remains much bigger than civilization and much better for your soul.

“I feel your wet shifting sand - Taste your sweet salty air – And I am renewed again…. …With the Joy of Living” - D. Morgan 1993 60 | APRIL 2014 | ParadiseNewsFL.com
