Out & About continued.... all been huge Time Bomb fans, so it was a perfect band to celebrate with. Happy Birthday again Risa! Keep your eye out for Time Bomb I’m sure you’ll be seeing them explode throughout the midstate and beyond. Next up was another blast from the past, The Morris Brothers Band. For all of you ladies that fell in love with the “Family Bandâ€? that played at carnivals and festivals throughout the area, yes these are the same guys. Bob and Carl are the only two original true ‘Morris Brothers’ left in the band, but they still know how to swoon the ladies with all of the songs you love. They originally started playing as a band in 1967. Pretty amazing and truly awesome to see them still playing and out there entertaining the masses. You can check out The Morris Brothers Band’s ad in this issue and plan your next night out on the town. My next night out on the town was a long one, but tons of fun! It started out at The Field House for Fierce. It was Marti’s last show on lead vocals. She is hanging up the microphone so she can spend more time with her soon to be Grandbaby! It’s hard to believe she’s going to be a Grandma! I hope I can step into the same fountain of youth that she did!! It was bittersweet to see and hear Marti one last time, but I wish all of the best with the new addition to their family. Since Fierce brought in Jody on the drums the sky is the limit. They are able to cover a lot more ground with Jerri out front singing, playing guitar, and just having some good ole’ crazy fun! Fierce didn’t miss a beat with Marti leaving the band, she was awesome and gave plenty of notice so Fierce had time to work in their new lead singer, Tina Marie Young. I heard Tina Marie play quite a few times with her old band, Deja Vudoo. Her voice absolutely amazed me then, and I’m sure it will continue to amaze me now! I can’t wait to check her out! To see where you can check out the new line up, check out their ad in this issue and get out there and get rockin! My stop in at the Field House was a quick one, because I had to swing in and pick up my side-kick Meredith and zoom on down to The Racehorse Tavern for Agents of Lewton. Agents of Lewton is on our cover this month, so if you want all the details on how amazing they are, you’ll have to read about in their Cover Story. I’m pleased to announce that The Racehorse Tavern is now a new advertiser in the pages of the PA Musician Magazine. Please check out their amazing line-up and get out there and support Local Music and a Local Business!! The Racehorse is a great place to go see your IDYRULWH EDQG 7KH\ KDYH D KXJH GDQFH Ă RRU EXW \HW VWLOO plenty of places to sit and chill to enjoy the music too. It’s a nice big room with well ran sound and great lights. Saturdays are band nights, and every Friday DJ Eric is playing your favorite music. On Thursdays they have an open mic night where musicians can come network and even buy/sell/trade equipment. It’s hosted by a different band every Thursday, but they have a Full Backline and PA so it’s a full band or single, duo open mic night. Don’t miss their big Summer Bash on Saturday, June 25th with DJ Paul Regan and Sons of Man. Lots of cool things happening at The Racehorse Tavern, again check out their ad and tell Jim you saw it in the PA Musician Magazine!! I know I look forward to spending many more nights at The Racehorse Tavern. My next night out was a super special private event for Al Varano’s Birthday at The Facktory in Liverpool. The Facktory is an absolutely amazing set up for bands to be able to play “liveâ€? but also record, or even just practice. The Facktory, located a block off of 11/15 in Liverpool, PA offers a 7500 sq. foot Recreation Hall HTXLSSHG ZLWK D ODUJH VWDJH DQG *UHHQ URRP GDQFH Ă RRU lounge area, game area, kitchen, bathrooms, showers and laundry facility. Well now that I got that plug over with, I can talk about the PARTY! Al turned a special birthday number, I won’t divulge all of the details, but he wanted to make sure it was everything he ever dreamed of and he did exactly that! The party technically started on Thursday as the bands started arriving and setting up equipment, to make sure everything would go smoothly they had Dave Russell the O.M.G. (Open Mic Guy) come in and be the Stage Manager. When I say arriving, I mean really arriving. Two of the bands, Berndsen and Hermigervill ZHUH ÁRZQ LQ

from Iceland! They also had Al’s local favorites, Nate Myers and the Aces, KNITEBITCH, Our Leonard, Pee Wee Varano, Breedlove from NYC, and even an International Illusionist, John Westford. The real party kicked off Friday evening and continued into the wee hours of Sunday. I was only able to be there on Friday, I can’t even imagine how crazy it was the whole weekend. When I arrived Nate Myers and the Aces were on the stage. When I didn’t know any of the other performers on the bill, I was glad to know I at least knew these guys and if a show kicks off with Nate Myers and the Aces, it’s only going to get better from there. It was cool to see the guys at a private laid back event. They were truly there to have a great time and help Al celebrate his special day. “What happens at The Facktory stays at The Facktory!” is what Nate kept saying, and my camera must’ve felt the same way because it didn’t work while they were on the stage. I managed to get one good pic of Trent Peechatka playing the keys like none other, but sorry guys.. maybe next time. It’s hard when a band is so good you just don’t want them to stop, but Dave runs a tight ship and quickly had us moving on to the next band, KNITEBITCH. The name KNITEBITCH, in all caps of course, makes you wonder exactly what you are going to see and hear, but I don’t know if you could’ve been prepared for what you were about to witness even if you tried. With band members with the names, Thunderlips, Horseradish, and Jack Mama, plus a Facebook description of “We’ll turn your mother into your grandmother,” all I knew is things were about to get crazy, and crazy they did. It’s a special kind of vulgar humor that has you cracking up laughing because you can’t believe what you are hearing! By the end of their set I think I honestly felt a little violated, but I’m sure that probably would make them happy. The crazy part is talking to these guys off the stage you would have NO IDEA what was going to happen either. Quite the shocker for sure.. and highly entertaining. Al was singing along, he knew all the words, word on the street is that he even helped write some of the songs. One thing about private events is there is no holding back… it’s balls to the wall and other places too! Next up, Our Leonard took the stage for a few more special songs. He looks like this nice big cuddly guy, just playing an acoustic guitar, but not only does he have an amazing voice, but the lyrics to his songs quickly get your attention and again have you laughing hysterically along. It was cool to have Our Leonard playing a little acoustic show between sets to keep people pumped during the changeover. Next up was Icelands, Berndsen. This guy was a super tall, red-headed bearded guy that demanded your attention. I guess I thought I heard New Wave music before but nothing like these guys. They played all originals, his guitar player was like nothing I’ve ever witnessed, he had everyone watching him with shock and awe! All of the other instruments were done with some kind of crazy sound machine ran by Hermigervill. It was programmed drums, a synth bass, and many other amazing electronic

Out & About continued.... Gravity. When I got there the party was in full swing and everyone was dancing and having a good time. Zero Gravity LV GHÀQLWHO\ D ORFDO IDYRULWH RI Double K. I know I haven’t gotten out nearly enough lately, but when I do get out I make the most of it. Double K is my go to spot because it’s my local bar, and a very faithful advertiser. I can look at their ad and see exactly who is playing there, and I can be there in 5 minutes, depending on the lights. I’ve had people complain that I don’t “get out enough”.. .but I can tell you I still get out way more than most people. I do try to get out and cover as much as possible, but I have a day job that pays the bills that requires a lot of time. We have quite a few great advertising venues: Tubby’s, Gullifty’s, The Fredericksburg Eagle, Double K, and all of the advertising bands and promoters. If I could just get to all of our advertisers I would be the happiest girl in the world, but even that is impossible. It also seems that everything is happening on the same night each month, and it’s also usually a day where I’m busy with family all day too! So... for all of those bands that keep sending me evites through Facebook and links to listen to your music or come to your show, chances are I’m just too stinkin’ busy! As far as our advertisers, I’m terribly sorry and please don’t lose hope in me or be offended if I don’t make it to your show! You never know where I’m going to show up next, and remember, just because I don’t show up, doesn’t mean your ad dollars didn’t get someone else in the door or to your website, etc. Thank you ALL for advertising.. I do truly appreicate each and every one of you!!! Without all of your support we wouldn’t be! Well that’s all for this month. A couple more HUGE shout outs; Happy not only Father’s Day, but also Happy Birthday to my Daddy, the one and only Whitey the Mighty!! (WYTMYT) I love you so much. No words can even describe how much I love you. I owe you for my super out going and bubbly personality. You have taught me to love all types of music and all types of people. I can start conversations with anyone, even tho I still haven’t brought home a hitch hiker and his broken down motorcycle yet! You have truly been an inspiration! I’m so glad you are such an integral part of our lives!!! XOXOXOXXOXO!! Happy YOU month Daddy! My last shout out is a Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s out there, especially my hubby and Me & Daddy playing corn hole the amazing Daddy of my two precious babies, Kris!!! If it wasn’t for him there wouldn’t be a “Rachel Rocks”. He allows me to go Out & About and cover all of the music I want, and understands that it’s my job, that I just happen to enjoy very much. He also understands that I’m a much happier person when I get out and enjoy a good night of music. He’s an amazing protector and friend and I love him immensely!!! I couldn’t have picked a better man to be the Daddy of my children and my own help mate. I must get buzzing out the door. I’m heading to Ohio this weekend for my niece’s graduation! Congrats to all of the grads out there!! Please party safe and get a DD and well if you are underage, don’t drink at all!!! The Agents of Lewton, Suited Up & Ready to Rock!

Mark “Agent M Sutherland Sr. The Agents of Lewton have been rocking stages throughout central PA for almost exactly a year. Mark Sutherland Sr. and Cameron Deveney started jamming together and before too long they decided it was time to put a project together. Mark knew a guy he thought would work as their lead singer and it wound up being David Snyder. David and Cameron performed together in a band called Thing 3, so they knew they enjoyed playing together. They put out word they were looking for a drummer and before too long Freddy “Boom Boom Murphy showed up. Mark played in a previous band with Freddy, so he was excited when he applied for the position. They brought him in for an audition and they knew instantly that their team of “Agents was complete. When they had all of their pieces they started kicking around band names and Cameron quickly came up with Agents of Lewton. “Lewton comes from the term ‘Lewton Effect’ from horror movies in the 1940’s. It was used when the writer wanted to throw people off their path. It was usually the cool, fun and surprising part of the movie. Just like the Agents of Lewton’s shows are also very fun and surprising!

Singer/ guitarist Kenny Fetterman and singer Michal Wiles offered up a pleasant variety of sounds, spanning hits from Nancy Sinatra and Fats Domino to Great White, Georgia Satellites, Gloria Gaynor, Roger Miller, Johnny Cash, Hall & Oates and more. Although I left before the evening session, The Chrome Hearts and Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band provided the music for twilight beer sampling. And for the record, my favorite brew during this year’s Pints For Pets was Dock Street Bohemian Pilsener, with Straub Maibock a close second! I journeyed to Pittsburgh last month to see national recording artists Prong at the Hard Rock Cafe on Station Square. Pow!! Wow!! Grab them with your music! What makes a song great? Well, it’s the story it tells. There’s no oneVL]H ÀWV DOO UXOH VLQFH VWRULHV FRPH LQ PDQ\ à DYRUV shapes, colors and sizes. They can be about eureka moments, disasters, personal battles, amazing discoveries, EDIà LQJ P\VWHULHV SRZHU VWUXJJOHV ZHLUG LQVLJKWV \RX name it. What do you need to know to write a good song? Whatever the subject, angle, tone, length or style, your story has to tickle the fancy of your listeners and maintain their interest to the very last note. Think hard about your intended audience. When it comes to getting their attention, think about their interests and possible preoccupations. Remember that people always have a multitude of things vying for their time. If you don’t grab them with your words or music from the start, you might as well give up. How do you choose your opening line? Make sure that it hooks your intended prey.
