It’s interesting how our musical taste and experiences have expanded and exploded with technology. I am very thankful for the many radio By Robin Noll stations that are now available over the internet and thoroughly enjoy Pandora where I can listen to worship songs while I work. Happy New Year and all that jazz. It’s already January 4th so &KULVWLDQ PXVLF KDV H[SORGHG WKURXJKRXW WKH ZRUOG FRPSDUHG WR if you’re like me you’re ready to be done with the holidays and what it was when I was growing up. I enjoy the old hymns still pressing on to the year ahead. Not that I had a bad holiday season but some of the new music is so anointed. It’s great in having the it’s just hard to gather information. Keeping focused is always a choices we have today. Music has such an impact on our everyday struggle for me working from my home but even harder during lives. We are addicted to sound, being silent is becoming a lost holidays. We were blessed with great family time even went to art. blast competing against each other. Plus Mike is always raising money to help someone, that’s just Mike. Be sure to thank Mike for his military service also as he is a Veteran. Tubby is providing entertainment all month long without charging a cover for any of their acts. Great food, great times at Tubby’s and their prices are very reasonable so you always have a little “cha chingâ€? left in your pocket. We did get some sad news over the holidays and that is Ike Eisenhower owner and manager of Gullifty’s for years has passed on to his next journey. His kids have been running Gullifty’s but it’s been sad. I know that he has a great relationship with Jesus so we know he is about in his 30’s right now enjoying some awesome music and being reunited with his beloved Keith but it doesn’t make it any easier for his family as they deal with the loss of another of their precious family member. The great thing about death is that it makes one aware of just how precious it is to spend time with your family, hugging and loving on one another, WKXV ZK\ ZKHQ LW FRPHV WR &KULVWPDV FRQFHUWV DQG VXFK , KDYH to lay aside my work and attend those family events, no one is guaranteed tomorrow. We will miss Ike. Out & About continued.... but I really wish we could convince some more of the original clubs, coffee shops, wineries, etc to advertise their shows in our magazine. Plus I wish these bands that work so hard at creating EPs, CDs, etc. would use our magazine to promote as well. For only $30 you can get a business card sized ad in the magazine. My next adventure started early with a trip to Perry County to help my Mom, Robin Noll, celebrate her birthday! Before I went up to take her out for dinner I went to my friend Michelle’s house, and we did a full Extreme Makeover on ME! It involved curling irons, make-up, and even jewelry! When we got up to Mom she hardly even recognized me. It was quite priceless, I wish I would’ve taken a video! Ha! We went out to Mastrachio’s in Newport for some delicious dinner and then it was time to take the birthday girl home and get out there in my speFLDO RXWÀW :KHQ \RX·UH DOO GUHVVHG XS ZKHUH HOVH ZRXOG \RX JR besides the Double K. My good friends Steel were on stage and it was hilarious to see how many people had to do a double take to even tell who I was. I had plans to go see some other bands, but once I heard Steel playing and being with all my friends I couldn’t leave. It was a great night of music and shenanigans once again! Steel is taking the month of January off but will be rockin’ next in February so get out there and support these guys! Trust me you won’t be disappointed! The night after Christmas I found out Bob and Vicki were heading to the Eagle Hotel for a night out on the town and I decided to join them again. The Special Darrell Adams project was on the stage. It was advertised as a night of Asking Andy or Deezle Church, but I think it was more Lindsey Erin without Lindsey herself, so I’m not sure what it was, but regardless it was the day after Christmas and there was live music so we were happy. The Eagle Hotel in Fredericksburg is such an awesome place to hang out. They have great staff that know how to mix some great drinks. When I got there Bob and Vicki were eating some wings, and even tho I just got done eating a huge dinner I was tempted to eat again, but somehow resisted! If you want to go out for a delicious dinner and support a venue that also supports live music get out there and support the Eagle Hotel. Mike is located right off Route 78 with plenty of free parking! Check out the Eagle Hotel ad in this issue and plan your next night out on the town! Last but certainly not least I decided to end my weekend of Christmas Fun head banging with Penntera at Tubby’s! I’m so glad I made the trip up there for HD’s last show. It’s hard to believe HD won’t be on the stage with Penntera anymore, but they already have a replacement, who even played a few songs at Tubby’s, his name is Pat Bowser. I haven’t seen him play before, but he did an amazing job stepping up to the plate. I’m so glad that this isn’t the end for Penntera. It’s a blast rockin’ out with these guys. It was a bittersweet night for sure, but we wish HD all the best at whatever his next endeavors may be. Penntera’s next show at Tubby’s will be on Good Friday, March 25th. They will not only be playing with their new guitar player, Pat Bowser, but they will also be bringing two new bands for Tubby’s as well, Iron Maiden tribute, “Maiden Kaos,” from Virginia, along with Xtrophy from Waynesboro. WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Or Do You Remember the Boy Scout Motto? Be Prepared! Preparation means a lot. Whenever you have a show, event or just a gig you better be ready to do it. That means all aspects of it — load-in, setup, show and load-out. Sometimes you need to do an advance site survey; or actually YLVLW WKH YHQXH RU VLWH WR GHWHUPLQH VSHFLĂ€FDOO\ ZKDW LV QHHGHG ² Ă€JXUH RXW ZKDW \RX QHHG WR XVH DQG ZKDW \RX QHHG WR GR ZKLOH you’re there, where the good restaurants are, etc. Doing a site survey and advance production meetings can be fun, but most of the time it turns out to be a quick visit, and then you are on your way to another venue. However, if the stars align right, you actually have time to visit friends; eat, drink & be merry! Bringing in or arranging certain materials and/or gear to be at a site can make the difference between a ‘well-oiled machine’ or a ‘clusterf‌’ I recently did a small outdoor event. One of the things that I thought to bring was some plywood sheets to make a roadway to roll the equipment from the truck to the stage area. That turned out to be a good thing as the ground was soft and the cases just got stuck in the mud. Too bad we didn’t have more plywood sheets available though. We used the sheets we had but had to keep moving them from behind the gear to the front to keep the stuff rolling instead of building one long road. It was still easier than not having any at all! One of the great joys of doing outdoor gigs is coping with mud. Some time ago we were doing a tour of outdoor venues; festivals

Needless to say the truckers were not happy about their rigs getting pulled through a bunch of mud that was full of deep ruts from the vehicles. It was a time consuming mess! A few days later we were in Germany and the locals there used PHWDO WLOHV ZKLFK ÀW WRJHWKHU WR IRUP URDGZD\V 7KH WUXFNV KDG QR trouble at all getting in and out. Being prepared and having the right stuff makes your life much easier and usually results in a better show. Now for this time of year you need snow shovels and tire chains and heavy coats‌‌‌.

:::' ² :KDW :RXOG :ROĂ€H 'R" :H RQO\ GR VPDOO VKRZVÂŤÂŤ In reality there is very little difference between a ‘large’ show and a ‘small’ one. A few more truckloads of gear, a few more stagehands, musicians, technicians, caterers and so on are all. What is the same, is the desire (or lack of) of the musicians and staff to present a great show. The audience should leave wanting more after having a good time. That usually means that the band and techs know the songs (or how to fake it) and how to connect with the audience. As well as having a good sound balance and lighting support. No matter what size room or venue, you ‘simply’ adjust your volumes and the amount of gear and have a good time. As you know that sounds easier than it is but that is why you have talented people working with you.

By Robin Noll Randy Fisher is a Multi-Award-Winning Christian Singer/ Songwriter from Pennsylvania; most recently being awarded the 2015 Christian/Gospel Artist of the Year by the InternationalMusic & Entertainment Association. Randy began playing the guitar at the age of eight, and songwriting in his teens. This year’s edition of Patched Together was the biggest and best yet, with the combination of music, children’s activities, multiple basket and other prize giveaways providing an unforgettable day, while raising funds for the Healing Patch’s mission of providing counseling and mentoring services to youth who have been impacted by the loss of family and loved ones. During my high school years, several years before I got hooked on local music, one of the band names I would frequently hear mentioned in the hallways of Altoona Area High School was Piranha, which enjoyed a popular initial run on local stages from 1975 to 1979. The original lineup of Piranha marked their 40th anniversary on Thanksgiving weekend with a special reunion show at 30 Something WKH VKRZ DOVR VHUYHG DV D EHQHĂ€W IRU St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The St. Jude’s theme was set early as show emcee Scott Cessna introduced young St. Jude’s cancer patient Drew Storm, who drew jubilant applause when he announced that he is now cancer free! With guest Rich Piccerillo helping out on lead guitar, The Backyard Rockers opened up the evening with acoustic classic rock favorites, with Rich’s lead solos highlighting renditions of Neil Young’s “Down By the Riverâ€? and “Rockin’ in the Free World,â€? Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Manâ€? and more. No Angels then built up to the main event with their strong set of classic and modern rock favorites. Felix & the Hurricanes seized the opportunity of a Pittsburgh Steeler-less Sunday in November to celebrate local blues, organizing the inaugural Bye Week Blues event at the group’s weekly

Sunday night performance venue, Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. This event shined the spotlight on blues variations from three different bands – the host band, or course, along with the Jukehouse Bombers and Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats. In progUHVV DV , Ă€UVW DUULYHG WKH Jukehouse Bombers delivered their hard-edged brand of electric blues, mixing original songs with select numbers from Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Rogers, Anders Osborne and the Allman Brothers. Highlights included the throaty howl of group ringleader/guitarist Jimmy Roach, witnessing the triple-guitar army dynamic of Jimmy, Joe Roach and Andrew Kirsch, and Joe demonstrating his slide talents on a cigar box guitar – all backed by the beefy rhythms of bassist Troy Laney and drummer Dave Vernot. Some of their highlights included new original songs like “Absolute Successâ€? and “Evil I’ve Done,â€? and their powerful read of the Allman Brothers/Molly Hatchet’s “Dreams I’ll Never See.â€? Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats then took the music in a more soulful direction. Even though battling cold issues this day, namesake “Miss Melanieâ€? The Professor continued.... and more – including Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” with a headbanging homestretch, and Black Sabbath’s “Fairies Wear Boots.” Besides the music, Bye Week Blues also featured a tasty food spread provided by W.S. Lee, plus giveaways of a blues-themed guitar lamp and a bicycle donated by Tony Mollick. Based on the success of this day, Felix indicated he would like to make Bye Week Blues an annual event. Classic progressive rock is not a musical style commonly encountered on local music stages in these parts, so when an area band tackles the detailed epics of this genre, it becomes a noteworthy event. Enter Skye 2.0’s performance at Pellegrine’s in Altoona last month, which not only boldly took on some of rock’s most challenging compositions, but also drew a good crowd of onlookers in the process! The current mach incarnation of a band whose original tenure happened on area stages in the early 1970s, Skye 2.0 – featuring founding Skye members Ken Civils on keys and Bill Hocherl on drums, singer/keyboardist Adam DiFlaviano, guitarist Don Osborn and bassist Kris Civils – pulled off some numbers I never imagined I would ever hear a local band cover! Opening with Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” Skye 2.0 dug into the catalogs of Yes, Boston, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Styx, Kansas, King Crimson, Europe, Rush and Flash. Highlights were numerous, including Yes epics such as “Roundabout,” “I’ve Seen All Good People/Your Move,” “Yours Is No Disgrace” and more – including a unique fusion of the Simon & Garfunkel and Yes versions of “America!” There was also Ken Civils’ “Hallelujah” chorus (from Handel’s “Messiah”) keyboard prelude into a passage from “Jesus Christ Superstar,” King Crimson’s “Court of the Crimson King,” Uriah Heep’s “Easy Livin’” and “Look at Yourself,” the full-length edition of Flash’ 1972 claim to fame “Small Beginnings” and more. A nice-sized audience of fans – including a number of area musicians – was on hand to witness and support this spectacle. King & Eric Clapton’s “Help the Poor” with Peter Green’s “Black Magic Woman,” and the night-ending version of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s “Cost of Freedom/Ohio.” Triple Threat can usually be seen performing during the second Thursday of the month at Pellegrine’s. , FDXJKW P\ ÀUVW RIÀFLDO ORRN DW QHZ DUHD URFNHUV Bone Jacked early last month at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg. Bone Jacked battled adversity this night, as lead singer Mat Wirtner was mostly sidelined with a bout of laryngitis, and could only contribute some harmonica accompaniment early in the show. Guitarist Jeremy Gena and bassist Mike Gherrity shared the vocal workload instead with Terry Wilt on drums. Both did a respectable job singing classic rock numbers by Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Georgia Satellites, Grand Funk Railroad, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Healey Band, Allman Brothers, Cream and more. A former solo performer, Jeremy pulled some songs from his own library, fronting Bone Jacked on versions of Prince’s “Purple Rain,” Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On,” and leading the group into an impromptu version of “Hoochie Coochie Man.” The Gran Sasso audience liked it enough to demand an encore at night’s end, which the group answered with a strong version of the Black Crowes’ “She Talks

The Professor continued.... in recent weeks. Longtime musician Cliff Turner passed away on November 27th after a lengthy battle with kidney disease. He was 59. Cliff played bass in a number of projects spanning a

40-year career, including his most recent group, the Cliff Turner Band, as well as Cliff Turner & The Afterburners, JP Rocks (with John Phelps) and others. Steve Buterbaugh, who played drums in some Altoona-based bands over the years, passed away on November 28th at age 53. Dale Nitti, who fronted the bands Hi-Tyde and Hardly Knew Her and performed as a solo artist, unexpectedly passed on December 18th at age 43. Also a State College native, David D. “Ike� Eisenhower passed on December 23rd. Ike started in the club scene in State College and than opened Gullifty’s in Camp Hill. After issuing the six-song EP “Palm of Her Handâ€? in 2013, the Huntingdon-based duo has followed with WKHLU Ă€UVW IXOO OHQJWK &' “Steal My Soulâ€?. This CD introduces listeners to the pair’s slant on acoustic roots-based music and Americana, mixing elements of folk, bluegrass, country and delta blues over eight original songs and two remakes. Both musicians sing, with Strait handling guitar and harmonica duties and Miller wielding mandolin and resonator guitar. A number of noteworthy musical guests help Strait & Miller bring the songs to life, including Chris Lawson (Nobody’s Heroes) on stand-up bass, Daniel Collins RQ Ă€GGOH Ben Souders and Bobby Baronner on banjo, Johnny Stevens (Mama Corn) on dobro and harmonica, and more. The album title is symbolic in that Pyers cannot return to either of his previous band situations, so he is forging a new focus and direction over the disc’s nine tracks. Rock is still a component of Pyers’ musical persona, evidenced by the aggressive style of the restless disc-opener “It’s Alrightâ€? and the punk-toned “All Night Long.â€? But Pyers explores other acoustic terrain as well; painting a sagebrush mystique on “Cowboy Song,â€? crafting a wistful mood with “In This Dream,â€? delivering an escalating melody and arrangement with “Stay,â€? and mixing several guitar rhythms and tempos on the energetic “Do You Know.â€? He looks for release from torment on the somber “Hold My Head,â€? and ponders loneliness on the thoughtful “Still Be Mine.â€?
