ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll

Once again I’m super late.I had a major crash with InDesign, it usually does crash when I’m putting the paper together but it usually saves everything that I did. This time not so. It lost a majority of my pages. The good news is that I was changing them into pdfs as I was going so I didn’t have to redo the work...PHEW! But very scary when you’ve been working over 24 hours and you need to get to the printer to get your paper printed. Fortunately I didn’t have to place any articles. This coming November we will be going into our 35th year of printing the Pennsylvania Mu-

sician Magazine and serving the PA Music Industry. I just want to thank all of you for reading us faithfully every month and for our many, many advertisers for without you we would not be able to provide this service. We have been blessed in many ways over the years by so many people. So if you want to be in the November issue give me a call at 717.444.2423 and we’ll get an ad designed for you. The rates are on 25 and you can see they are still the same as they have been for over 20 years. It might be time to raise them. There’s a lot of information in this month’s issue so be sure to read all the ads so you don’t miss anything. On September 10th Pentagon will be celebrating 45 years of entertaining the masses at Gullifty’s. Congratulations Pentagon! Makespace Art Gallery is a fairly new business who supports original acts and artists and espe-

cially those who are doing it on their own. They will be hosting their first Makespace Music Festival at HMAC Capitol Ballroom on October 1st. It’s an all age event. We have had a very busy summer this year and I can’t believe that it is the last day of August. We did get to go to Delaware with Andrea and Dave, and Kate and Robert. It was great getting away for a week but one has to eventually return to one’s job. Whitey is doing great by the way and we are very thankful to have him with us. He is giving guitar lessons and ukulele lessons. He charges $15 for an hour. He says it takes a half hour just to talk to each other. If you want lessons we’re located in Liverpool if you want to give him a call. I am very thankful how God has blessed us and kept us over the years. But I’m going to sign off and get the September issue to the printer. I love you Whitey and I do love Jesus!!

Happy Birthday Zack on September 11th & Rachel on September 2nd!!

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks

September is here, hopefully that means cooler temperatures will be heading our way soon. I love living in Pennsylvania and having the ability to enjoy all four seasons of nature. Sometimes it feels like Mother Nature may be a little tipsy, but she usually figures it out before the season is completely over. Fortunately the warmer temperatures mean that deck season is still here. You can catch some amazing music out sitting on a deck, sometimes even under the stars on a beautiful night. I know Gullifty’s has music on the patio most Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, check out their ad for all of the info. Also the Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel has a great deck with live music and a delicious wing special on Sundays. Again, check out their ad for all the info. Get outside and enjoy the music before we are all trapped inside for the winter. This month’s adventures started a long time ago at Chick’s in Hummelstown for Frayed Nott. As a three piece band I am always impressed by the songs they can cover. Dave, the lead singer, is from Hummelstown so they always get a great crowd and this night was no different. There were plenty of people dancing and having a great time. These guys do their best to keep adding to their set list and at every show I’ve been to, when they start playing a song, you often hear people shout, “Oh man, I LOVE this song!” They play the hits of the 80’s and 90’s that not every other band is playing, but yet they were one time chart toppers, so everyone remembers them. Frayed Nott keeps promoting themselves every way possible with new merch, an updated website, and advertising in this magazine. Please give them a listen. I promise you will hear at least one song you know and love and you won’t be able to resist at least dancing in your chair if not on the dance floor. The next night out was a strange one. I was working up in New Bloomfield and my friend, Amy Leeser posted on Face-

book that Element 22 was playing at the Marysville Carnival. Since it was on the way home I decided to stop in and check it out. Growing up in Perry County, Mom and Dad would often take us to the Marysville Carnival, it was obviously HUGE then, and it’s still a pretty awesome Lion’s Club Carnival now too. I was impressed with all of the Lion’s Club game tables and food stands. It’s so hard to get volunteers these days, but obviously Marysville knows what they are doing. They are even big enough that they have a great bandstand with live music every night. I have to admit it was the first time I saw a band playing literally on top of the Pizza and Soda stand. I’m surprised the guys could get any work done knowing they were playing on top of pizza! Element 22 did a great job adjusting their set list to the crowd. A lot of people brought out lawn chairs and were there to sit back and enjoy the show. Element 22 has a show coming up at the Vineyards at Hershey on Sept. 9th. That is a beautiful place to catch a show. If that doesn’t work with your schedule check out their ad in this issue and get out there and rock with these guys soon. My next night out was one of those crazy busy nights, but I decided to swing in to Double K and see what was happening. Firestorm was on stage. A four piece classic rock band from the Myerstown area. These guys were new to the Double K so it took the regulars a while to warm up to them, but by the end of the night they had some dancers on the dance floor, so overall I would say that was a good sign for Firestorm. I know I appreciated hearing their keyboard player. There aren’t too many keyboard players out there, so when I see one it’s a special treat that I always enjoy. I’m sure you will probably be seeing Firestorm again soon. It’s always great to know I have such a great local bar that supports live music. I always enjoy stopping in there on Fridays and Saturdays and enjoying the music. Check out their schedule in this issue and come to the Double K for your next night on the town. The following night I headed up to Tubby’s for a full night of music. Steve Junkins got a few local bands together for a benefit for Dave Lawyer. Dave supported live music at many different local venues from Tubby’s to Double K and beyond, so now the bands wanted to give back. Dave died unexpectedly at the young age of 52, so this benefit was to help raise some funds for Dave’s family. Steel played first, but I unfortunately missed their set. The next band up was Single Barrel. It’s awesome to see that more people are becoming Single Barrel regulars, they aren’t as surprised with Single Barrel’s song choices, they are right up there dancing along from the very beginning. Single Barrel plays more of the obscure songs that you don’t hear on mainstream radio. I’m sure a lot more people are downloading songs from Gov’t Mule, Blackberry Smoke, and Rival Sons, just to name a few, thanks to Single Barrel. If you want to hear some

interesting music about sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. I suggest checking out their ad in this issue and booking them in your venue soon. Bookings are light for Single Barrel this month as Chris DellaPorta also performs with Smokin Gunnz and they have a full schedule this month. Next up was Decipher Life, talk about rock n’ roll! These guys got up there with all of their energy and rocked Tubby’s nice, big stage. Steve and Brett both playing guitar and switching sides of the stage and moving all around just adds so much energy to the stage, not to mention their sound! Good thing they have Dill, on bass and Bryon on drums to help keep them grounded. When you throw Michael’s amazing vocals into the mix, singing with every bit of emotion and energy he has, it really makes it an energy packed show. Decipher Life is playing at Field of Screams on September 9th. I’m sure they will be able to get that crowd pumped up and ready to Scream! Check out Decipher Life’s schedule in this issue and let them rock your face off! I like how Steve mixed up the bands in the line-up, tantalizing our ear drums with a great variety of music. The next band to take the stage was Smokin Gunnz. It was cool to see people on the dance floor all night long. Tubby’s was packed with people who just like good music and wanted to have a good time. Smokin Gunnz plays all of the southern rock that everyone loves and knows. It is the one band that when people yell “Free Bird” they actually know how to play it. The way they pour out their energy and lay it all out on the stage during “Free Bird” makes me exhausted just watching them. Smokin Gunnz has developed quite a following over the years, I don’t think I’ve continued on pg. 11...

Out & About continued....

ever been to a Smokin Gunnz show that hasn’t had a crowd. They are getting ready to head down to Ocean City Maryland’s Bike Week in September performing at Wild Bill’s. They are honored to be playing this awesome event yet again. It’s a great time with plenty of shenanigans. If you have time to spare, with or without a bike, come check it out for yourself, not only is it at THE BEACH, but seeing all of the bikes everywhere is pretty awesome too. Check out all of the details in their ad in this issue. If you can’t make it to the beach they will also be playing down in York for their big bike night at the York Harley Davidson plant. Last but not least, they cranked up the volume and Gun Metal Gray took the stage. I’m glad to see they are still rockin’ the stage even without Nick. It’s not easy when band members leave, but one thing is for sure the show must go on, and it definitely does! It looks like Christian is enjoying sucking up the lime light and ripping away on all of the guitar parts. He can definitely hold his own. Gun Metal Gray always puts on one heck of a show and this night was no different. It was a rockin’ way to end a great night of music at Tubby’s. My next night out was another long one, it was the Celebration of Life for Randy “Rockstar” Robertson. Randy unfortunately, lost his life to bile duct cancer on August 5th. Even though we were all aware of Randy’s battle with cancer, we were obviously all hoping he would kick it’s A**! We are all happy that he was able to find some relief with cannabis oil, and that he lived long enough to see Medical Marijuana get legalized in the state of PA, but of course no one ever wants to lose someone they love. To read all about Randy, check out this month’s cover story. Of course Randy was also a rocker, so Molly, his wife, wanted us to have a Celebration of Randy’s life. Plenty of bands instantly stepped up and wanted to play this very special show. I arrived late because of work, but when I got there Pentagon was taking the stage. I’ve obviously heard a lot about these guys, but this was my first time finally catching their show. They are a 6-piece show band that has been playing together for 45 years! They play everything from your rock n’ roll favorites to R&B. I hope I can catch a longer show soon. Honeypump took the stage next. Stephanie has an amazing set of pipes on her, belting out all of your favorite classic rock songs. Smokin Gunnz took the stage next followed by Steel. I think everyone knows how much I love both of these bands. I’ve become friends with not only the musicians in the bands, but all of their significant others and their fans. It is always hard for me to watch someone who is hurting. I just wanted to gather them all together in one big group hug and squeeze them and tell them all it’s going to be ok. One thing we know for sure is Randy is rockin’ in heaven. Hmm.. maybe that’s why we’ve had so many thunder and lightning storms lately… lol. It was a great Celebration of Life. I’m sure Randy was there in spirit enjoying every note! My next night Out & About I stopped in to Tubby’s for Penntera. Penntera’s front man quit on them without any type of notice, luckily they have some amazing fans that love Pantera as much as they do, that have been able to fill in on lead vocals. The night I saw them Don Egan was filling in. I’ve seen him plenty of times singing along from the dance floor, it was awesome to see him get his night to shine in the light on stage. They’ve been lucky that they didn’t have to miss a show. All of the venues have been understanding and the fans have been not only understanding, but helpful too! Penntera is thrilled to announce they found their new front man, Mikey Papers. I was told that if I think Johnny had energy wait until you see this guy! I can’t wait to catch them at a show soon. It’s always a blast dancing and singing along with Penntera! Check out their ad in this issue and get out there and rock with them soon! My last night Out & About I wound up at The Blue Moose for a night of original music. Ape! was up first on stage. They were definitely all out hardcore rock! Honestly I even thought it was a bit too loud for Blue Moose, but they know they like it loud, so they had a complimentary box of ear plugs in front of the stage for anyone to use. I took full advantage of the ear plugs, and while I wore them I sat out on the deck with the door closed, and it was just about perfect. They were loud and very proud of their rock n’ roll! Ape! came up from Philadelphia to rock the Moose, and they definitely got the party started. The last band of the night was The Give Take. I’ve heard so much about these guys from my fellow writer, Eric Hoffman. I’m glad I finally got the chance to see them. They truly do put the word “rock” in rock n’ roll. They’ve recently released a new 11-song album, which is unheard of in today’s world, “Secunda”, can be downloaded from their bandcamp site. continued on pg. 12...

Aaron Zimmerman from Steel performing at Randy’s Celebration of life

Well that’s all for this month. I was lucky and I was able to catch a lot of bands and I only made it out a few nights this month. There is so much amazing music everywhere. Some months it seems that the bands I want to see are all playing on the same night, and that just so happens to be a night when I am out of town with the family. If I haven’t been to your show, please don’t lose hope in me. I’m out there, supporting music as much as I possibly can, and I hope you are too. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me at RachelRocks@ pamusician.net. You can also check out all of my Hot Shots on our Facebook page, facebook.com/PAMusicianMagazine, (after I get it updated of course), hopefully before the 7th of September. Have a great month and get out there and Support Local Music and Local Businesses!!! [Editor’s Note a.k.a. Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! What an incredible month of shows beginning with The Biters opening for D Generation at Philadelphia’s Johnny Brendas. D Generation have reunited once again for their fourth album, “Nothing Is Anywhere”. The glam punk band formed in 1991 in New York City, broke up in 1999 but has reunited for shows since 2011. The Atlanta band, The Biters, then played a packed free show the following night at Lancaster’s ABAG. Their debut LP, “Electric Blood”, was released in 2015 and the band continues to play hard travelling by van across the U.S Harrisburg’s own Lebowskis have called it quits after 2 decades of existence. Lebowskis played their final show on August 6th at Linglestown’s Blue Moose. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to make the show because of a prior show (Coldplay at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field) but I heard Lebowskis were incredible with an attendance of nearly 250 fans. Lebowskis, however did give me an experience I will never forget, allowing me to their practice space for rehearsal before their final show. Lebowskis are a fantastic band and one of the best out of Harrisburg, and very proud to call them friends. Let’s hope they continue to be musicians in some form. Oh, and Coldplay was pretty good – a sold out show with an attendance over 70,000. England’s newest import, The Struts, played a free huge show at Harrisburg’s Sawyers on August 5th. Described as “unabashcontinued on pg. 12...

edly over the top retro-glamour classic rock” the band was reminiscent of Queen, Foxy Shazam and The Darkness. The Struts sold-out Washington DC 9:30 Club the following night with Nirvana/Foo Fighters Dave Grohl in attendance. The band continues to tour the world and are currently in Japan. Singer/ actress Juliette Lewis is in the midst of a three-week tour of U.S. I was fortunate to see both the Philadelphia and Washington DC shows. Lewis has been making music and performing since 2004 and gives an amazing performance every show. Highlight of the month included a great weekend with L7 on Friday in Washington DC, The Bronx on Saturday in Baltimore and Public Enemy on Sunday in Philadelphia. The great all-female 90’s band L7, famous during the Seattle grunge scene continues to reunite for sporadic shows worldwide. The Bronx brought their hardcore punk to the Ottobar on August 13th in which singer Matt Caughthran performed the entire set from within the mosh pit. And Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame members Public Enemy delivered their iconic hip hop to over 5,000 fans at the Dell Music Center. Rick Springfield brought his most recent tour to Sands Casino in Bethlehem on August 19th. The 67-year old Springfield is supporting his latest album, “Rocket Science”, but included many of his hits from his career spanning over 50 years, including “I’ve Done Everything For You” and “Jessie’s Girl.” Local native Jeffrey Gaines returned to Harrisburg’s Capitol Ballroom on August 20th, playing a festival to benefit Little Buffalo State Park. Later that night, The Give Take gave a powerful performance at The Blue Moose. This band is exceptional and becoming one of Harrisburg’s greatest assets. The Give Take recently released their second album, “Secunda”. NATIONAL NEWS: Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper are starring in a remake of the movie “A Star is Born.” This will be Gaga’s first leading role in a movie and directorial debut of Cooper. Gaga will compose and perform new songs for the musical drama. The original “A Star Is Born” was released in 1937 featuring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. It was remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason and again in 1976 with Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. U2 are playing the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas September 23rd-24th. The band is also set to appear in San Francisco October 5th to benefit UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals. U2’s performance is proceeded by a cocktail reception and an after-party with will.i.am and M.C. Hammer. Tickets are available, starting at $1,000. Bono reported the band was working on the follow-up to 2014’s “Songs Of Innocence” and that a tour was planned for 2017. Morrissey’s latest global tour includes Philadelphia’s Tower Theatre on September 22nd. The outing then goes to Japan in early October, stops in exotic locales such as Singapore and Jakarta, and spends the rest of the month sweeping across Australia. Morrissey returns to the U.S. in early November for seven final shows, including four in Texas. Taylor Swift donated $1 million to Louisiana flood relief after recent torrential rains caused massive flooding in the state and killed at least 11 people. The 26-year-old pop star stated, “We began The 1989 World Tour in Louisiana, and the wonderful fans made us feel completely at home. The fact that so many people in Louisiana have been forced out of their own homes is heartbreaking.” The flooding is some of the worst in Louisiana history, damaging at least 40,000 homes. More than 60,000 people have registered for disaster aid and over 30,000 people have been rescued. Tegan and Sara remember signing with Neil Young’s label Vapor Records 16 years ago as budding 19-year-old singers. “We really in a huge way owe our incredibly long career to Neil Young because he afforded us the time to develop as an artist,” said Tegan. The twin sister duo released their eighth album “Love You to Death”, which reached the Top 20 on the Billboard 200 chart. “The album is a bold, upbeat adventure with topics ranging from stalking ex-lovers to family drama.” Tegan and Sara bring their tour to Philadelphia’s Fillmore on November 3rd and Washington DC’s 9:30 Club on November 6th-7th. Iconic Canadian rock act The Tragically Hip closed out its Man Machine Poem tour on August 20th in its hometown of Kingston, Ontario in a seminal moment in Canadian musical history. The Hip’s tour exclusive to Canada, has been particularly emotional this summer, since it was revealed the frontman continued on pg. 18...

The Life & Legacy of Randal Ray Robertson

By Rachel Rocks & Randy’s Loved Ones... On August 5th our local music community lost a great man, Randy “Rockstar” Robertson. This article isn’t only written by me, I sat down with Molly, Randy’s wife, and Chris DellaPorta, Randy’s former employee, and long-time friend to help me come up with even more history about Randy’s life. I also scoured the internet and found plenty of great stories and videos to watch. I am starting this story with the obituary written by his daughters, Rachael and Rebecca with the help of their family:

Randy “Rockstar” Robertson, 57, of Camp Hill passed away from Bile Duct Cancer Friday, August 5th, 2016, in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born April 16, 1959 in Herington, Kansas, he was the son of Roberta (Bobbie) Kitzmiller and Gerald Robertson. Randy attended Cedar Cliff High School, but was known best as a much-loved musician and guitar player. In 1995, Randy opened his own business, a guitar shop proudly named after his family, “Triple R Guitar”. In this small, Lemoyne shop, The “Rockstar” took many new musicians under his wing and gave them a place to call home and often a man to call Dad. Randy thrived in repair work on guitars, his interesting and hilarious customer service, but, mostly, his amazing guitar playing. Though Randy worked night and day for his family, he never missed his daughters’ performances in their school musicals and plays, a great band’s show, or a chance to “krank” on his Harley. His daughters say you could always hear him in the audience, cheering and whistling as loud as he could--he always made a presence in any room. Whether it was with his jokes, his hilarious faces or his iconic rockstar beard, you couldn’t miss Randy. Later in life, Randy enjoyed working for West Shore Window and Door, who have been very supportive in Randy’s battle with cancer. Since his diagnoses in March of 2015, Randy became a strong activist for the legalization of medical cannabis. He changed the minds of many around him, including some of the representatives at the Capitol. Though still fighting and sick, Randy lived to see the passing of SB3 a day after his 57th birthday, April 17th, 2016. Loved dearly by everyone who knew him, Randy is and will always be known as “The King” and a dedicated soldier of Christ. He was predeceased by Ray and Faye Robertson as well as Bill and Florence Hinds. In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by his wife, Molly Landon Robertson; his sons, Randal Ray Robertson, Jr. and Brandon Brady; his twin daughters, Rachael and Rebecca Robertson; his brother, Steve Robertson; his sisters, Risa Armstrong and Robyn Sealover; his stepmother, Deborah Robertson; two granddaughters and his large extended family. A visitation was held for Randy Tuesday, August 9th, at Neill Funeral Home. The line wrapped around the building and was filled with everyone from politicians to rockers who came to show their respects to Randy. On Wednesday, August 10th at 1:00 pm, the family asked all riders to join them in a motorcycle escort from Neill Funeral Home to the Camp Hill Presbyterian Church, for a 2:00 pm service. The rough count of the bikes was 57 motorcycles, bittersweet since Randy was 57 years old. By the time the service started it was standing room only. Following the service, there was a celebration of life at Gullifty’s. The room was packed with people telling stories and remembering Randy, and the amazing man he was. Of course there was plenty of live music all night long.

April 16, 1959 ~ August 5th, 2016 Randy grew up in the New Cumberland area. Music was always a huge part of his life. It was only natural that in 1986 he got a job at Wray’s Music Store in Lemoyne. He worked hard at Wray’s for 9 years until he finally opened up his own shop, Triple R Guitar, right down the street on Market St. in Lemoyne. Through Triple R Guitar he quickly became known as “The King” pronounced “KingAHHH.” Regulars in his shop also gained their own special nicknames given to them by Randy, some of those nicknames made sense whereas others needed a little bit of explaining. There are so many crazy stories about “the one time in the shop” but one thing for sure he valued and respected all of his employees and his customers, as well as his employees. Randy would always go above and beyond to give you the best possible price, with the best possible piece of equipment. Randy was always volunteering to perform at benefits helping many people in the music community. If there was a musical event going on he was there to support with his presence and his time. Randy was gifted with charisma and a genuine caring for others. Small business of any kind is not easy in today’s world, and unfortunately Randy had to close the shop after 17 years in business. It was a sad day for many people in the music community. But, Randy didn’t let it stop him. He quickly got a job at West Shore Window and Door and became an integral part of their sales team. Even though closing the shop was heart wrenching it was actually a blessing in disquise as West Shore Window and Door played a key role for him and his family as they dealt with his future health issues. Randy was a shop owner/salesman by day and a rocker by night. Throughout the years he was in so many bands it’s hard

to keep track of them all, but some of the “more popular” ones were “Work Release”, “Tilted Uterus” (which only played at the practice sheds, but wow what a party!), “Cheron” and “F5”. In the early years of Triple R Guitar, he even hosted a blues jam at Mr. G’s. Many in the local music community looked up to him and respected him. Unfortunately, in March of 2015 he was diagnosed with Stage IV Bile Duct Cancer, specifically cholangiocarcinoma, a very rare yet aggressive form of cancer. Randy underwent extensive surgery at Johns Hopkins Institute and endured a very long stretch of chemo. The music community immediately banned together and, with the help of Joanie Jones, started a Go Fund Me Page to help Randy and his family. Many bands and fans also put together benefits and even yard sales to raise funds. All of the support greatly helped Randy and his family get through this difficult time. Randy was struggling through chemo, some days barely able to function. Then, one day his old friend Sam stopped by and told him about Cannabis Oil. He even taught Molly how to make it herself. After Sam had been healed from Colon Cancer he was on a mission to help people who were also suffering from cancer, just like a medicine man. Within only a few months Randy still had cancer, but with the added help from Cannabis Oil, he was off all pharmaceuticals. He even managed to gain 22 lbs. and keep all of his amazing hair, something that is unheard of with most cancer patients. (One of his biggest fears was losing his hair.) It was a night and day difference using the Cannabis Oil. He was able to walk his dogs again, ride his Harley, and basically have his life back. When Randy was asked, “Doesn’t Cannabis make you feel high?” His response was, “Yes it does, but so does Morphine and Oxycodone.” For the most part, all of the pharmaceuticals Randy was prescribed made him feel pretty awful. “The difference is,” Randy would often explain, “Cannabis gives you a high that still allows you to function in your everyday life.” The pharmaceuticals did not do that. Even though Cannabis Oil had been a banned substance in Pennsylvania, Randy decided, like Sam, that he wanted to make sure everyone knew about this amazing medicinal oil. Randy even went to ABC27 News to tell his story. During his first interview, Randy hid his identity. After getting amazing, healing results, he revealed himself, as well as his progress, so the world could see what this incredible, natural drug was doing in his life. On September 22, 2015, while Randy was undergoing yet another round of chemo, Molly decided to go check out a #stillwaiting rally at the capitol in Harrisburg. Needless to say, it got her a bit fired up hearing so many stories about the people suffering and still waiting to make medical marijuana legal in the state of PA. Molly and Randy quickly became huge Cannabis Oil and Medical Marijuana advocates, along with the rest of their family and friends. Throughout the following month, Randy and Molly attended many rallies on the capitol. Sometimes, Randy would be so sick he would practically be crawling up the steps of the capitol, wearing his pajamas, so he could beg, plead, and knock on the doors of our State Representatives. No matter what, he didn’t miss an opportunity to get in the politicians faces to make sure they realized how bad people were suffering. In February of 2016 they delivered a petition with 18,000 signatures to legalize marijuana. Finally, after months of rallies, phone calls, letters, etc… on April 17th, 2016, one day after Randy’s 57th birthday, Act 16 (SB3) was signed and Medical Marijuana is now legal in the state of Pennsylvania. We were the 24th state to legalize Medical Marijuana, but the fight still continues. Sadly, on August 5th, Randy lost his battle with cancer. Short-

September, 2016

ly afterwards, Molly started a Facebook Page #cannabiscuRRRes. In the ‘About’ section of the page Molly explains, that even though Act 16 was passed, it still never protected Randy from prosecution or arrest. Regardless, Randy used his voice anyway, always wanting to speak for those that couldn’t speak for themselves. Inspired by Randy’s commitment to all patients

regardless of diagnosis, age or preferred delivery method of relief, Molly and friends will continue to fight to Decriminalize Cannabis in Pennsylvania. They will continue to boldly tell his story and honor his memory by ensuring no one will ever be jailed for finding relief in this amazing plant again. Please, join the Facebook group cannabiscuRRRes and help them to continue the fight! Another amazing charity organization that helped Randy and his family in his fight against cancer was the Vickie’s Angel Foundation. They reach out to families in our community that have someone battling cancer and they provide financial support for the everyday expenses, like groceries, gas, electric bills, etc. They helped out the Robertson family in their time of need and now, it’s time to give back. On October 8th there will be a Randy Robertson Ride, starting at 9am. It will start at Hellion Custom Cycles located at 6384 Brandy Lane in Mechanicsburg, PA. They are asking for a minimum of $10 per person to be given directly to the Vickie’s Angel Foundation at the first stop. Please, come out and support this foundation so they can continue to help people in our community. You can find out more about it and find out how you can donate at www.

vickiesangelfoundation.org.

Even though many continue to fight on in Randy’s memory it’s still not an easy task. But I think David D. Buell said it best...

“He didn’t allow an unexpected shock to stun or silence him. Instead he turned a setback into a victory, a challenge into a victory tale and you have us all cheering for you. The music of you will never die and all of us will love the sound of your song playing in our head always. I love you brother. God Speed and rock on!”

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price

Alas, another summer winds down and will soon segue into autumn, and summer festivals will transition into fall festivals. Plenty of outdoor live music activity remains; enjoy it while it lasts! While many of my favorite live music highlights in recent weeks happened outdoors, at least one big highlight happened indoors. In late July, George Thorogood and the Destroyers presented the rowdiest rock’n’roll party experienced so far at State College’s State Theatre. Proclaiming that he and his band were sprung from jail this night, George brought the rock’n’roll lawlessness, sass and swagger, and demonstrated lots of mean slide guitar throughout the night. He and the Destroyers performed all the essentials...opening with “Rock Party,” and delivering raucous versions of “Who Do You Love,” “Night Time,” “I Drink Alone,” “One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer,” “Get a Haircut,” “Move It On Over” and “Bad to the Bone” to end the main set. This concert rode at a feverish high for the duration, with George working all corners of the stage and bringing the show. George and the Destroyers took each song and rode it to maximum fire and intensity, highlighted by George’s scorching slide guitar runs and sax player Buddy Leach’s feisty solos. When one lady in the audience sassed him, George announced he was going to punish her, before leading into the fiery “Gearjammer!” He and the Destroyers also saluted the ‘Man In Black,’ doing a rowdy take on Johnny Cash’s “Cocaine Blues.” When the packed house called for the encore, George and company returned to deliver a smoking edition of “Madison Blues” to finish the night. Fair season heated up, and this year’s 156th annual Clearfield County Fair early last month again brought top-notch musical entertainment; including the classic rock extravaganza of the Marshall Tucker Band and Creedence Clearwater Revisited. This was my first time ever seeing the Marshall Tucker Band. Several key members of this band have passed away since the group’s 1970s heyday, including lead guitarist Toy Caldwell, bassist Tommy Caldwell and guitarist George McCorkle. But original singer and founding member Doug Gray has kept the Marshall Tucker Band going over the years. Several current members brandish the southern rock pedigree – guitarist Chris Hicks logged time in The Outlaws, guitarist Rick Willis performed in the Toy Caldwell Band, and drummer B.B. Borden was a founding member of Mother’s Finest. During their opening set, Doug continually thanked the audience and fans for their support of the band through its nearly 45-year history, and he acknowledged several teenaged fans in the audience that were grooving along. The group opened with “This Ol’ Cowboy,” which quickly established that their musicianship is still very much alive and well, with keyboard/flute man Marcus Henderson taking the spotlight with some tasty flute work. Doug explained that he wasn’t content to do the short radio versions of Marshall Tucker’s tunes, but instead liked to stretch them out and improvise on them. This set the tone for exciting and expansive versions of favorites like “Fire on the Mountain,” “Desert Skies,” “Take the Highway,” the set-closer “Heard It in a Love Song” and more. Several tunes became crowd singalongs, including the classic rock staple “Can’t You See,” during which 2016 Clearfield County Fair Queen Rachel Duke joined and sang alongside Doug. Marshall Tucker Band established an upbeat vibe on each song, and established a friendly connection with the Clearfield crowd that set a pleasant tone for the whole evening. Formed in 1995 by founding Creedence Clearwater Revival bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug “Cosmo” Clifford, Creedence Clearwater Revisited followed with their party of CCR classics. I soon realized that this show was more of a celebration of the music that Cook and Clifford helped to create, and not so much the roster making that music. This Creedence Clearwater Revisited roster was very capable – Cook and Clifford provided the solid Creedence backbone, lead guitarist Kurt Griffey captured the CCR guitar tones plus delivered stinging solo work throughout the set, singer/guitarist Dan McGuinness (who fronted a CCR/John Fogerty tribute group prior to joining Revisited) displayed a strong Fogerty-like voice, and keycontinued on pg. 20...

George Thorogood photo by Jim Price boardist/guitarist/percussionist/harmonica player Steve Gunner colored the sound as the group’s utility man. Their set rode at a feverish high from start to end, as they delivered the Creedence catalog – opening with “Born on the Bayou,” and firing up dancing and grooving fans with “Green River,” “Lodi,” “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” “Suzie Q,” “Hey Tonight,” “Long As I Can See the Light,” “Down on the Corner,” “Looking Out My Back Door,” the extended version of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Bad Moon Rising,” “Proud Mary,” “Fortunate Son” and more. When the large fair crowd jubilantly called for the encore, the group returned for three more: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” “Travelin’ Band” and “Up Around the Bend.”

It was fun to witness the mixture of young and old, from teenagers and kids to seniors, all joined together in celebration – everybody knew each Creedence song, and just about every hit turned into a joyous singalong! It was inspiring to witness the current incarnations of both bands this night as they injected live performance energy into their renowned classics and hits, kept their music alive and relevant for their older fans, plus turned younger generations on to this music as well! I was able to attend the kickoff night for last month’s tenth annual Flood City Music Festival in Johnstown. National recording artist Grace Potter and her band anchored the three-band kickoff party, performing as the middle act on the Bud Light stage. I first saw Grace with her band The Nocturnals during the 2009 Flood City Music Festival, shortly before they broke out nationally. She and her current band provided a high-powered, energetic show this night. Grace displayed a dynamic voice and personality from the start, running the gamut from soulful to intense. She switched between acoustic guitar, Flying V and keys as she and her band mixed up the song selection between hard rock, funk, soul and more. Some of her songs this night included “Ah Mary,” “Empty Heart,” “Nobody’s Born with a Broken Heart,” “Medicine,” the Al Green-inspired “Low Road,” her solo guitar and vocal number “Big White Gate,” “Nothing But the Water,” “Stars,” the funky “Your Girl,” “Instigators,” and the set-closing “Paris (Ooh La La),” which featured Grace and her drummers in a percussion jam. Grace kept the large crowd on its toes and cheering for the entire set. I also saw the other two bands this night. I arrived toward the end of The Commonheart’s set, but enjoyed what I heard from this Pittsburgh-based group as they brought brass-edged funk-rock original songs plus a take on Pink Floyd’s “Have a Cigar” to end their set. And following Grace Potter, another Pittsburgh group, the Boogie Hustlers, performed a set of tasty old-school styled original R&B and soul. The central PA community came together in late July to remember beloved area entertainer and community pillar Dennie Huber – who passed away unexpectedly in June – during a special day of music and fun in his honor at Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton. This was a memorable day, as every performer on the stage was touched in some way by Dennie

– from musicians who first tasted the limelight as youth entertainers at his annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show, to former bandmates and contemporaries who shared stages with him. The Band OZ kicked off the afternoon – the jazz/funk/ blues incarnation of singer/guitarist Don Osborn, bassist/singer Bill Hunter, keyboardist/singer Ken Civils and drummer Jeff Crownover (filling in for Bill Hocherl), The Band OZ played an eclectic selection of numbers from Delbert McClinton, Jonny Lang, Teddy Pendergrass, Steely Dan, Jeff Beck and more. The Professor continued.... between bands throughout the day. Jim still has an excellent voice, and demonstrated that voice on classic hits from Gary Puckett, Frankie Valli, the Righteous Brothers, Roy Orbison and many more. Featuring Dennie’s longtime Crazy Fest soundman Jack Servello and his son, former Crazy Fest contestant Richie Servello, The Servello Family – Jack, wife Barb and Richie – performed a variety of classic hits, spanning artists like the Beatles, John Denver, Johnny Mathis, an early 1960s medley and more. Jack – who also helped emcee the event – ended their set by performing a special tribute song he wrote following Dennie’s passing, “Thank You Hubie.” Chief show organizer Terry Wilt played drums with Dennie years ago in the band Crazy Notions; Terry’s current band, Bone Jacked, continued the music with their mixture of classic rock and blues from Van Morrison, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, April Wine, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blues Traveler and more. Guest guitarist Bob DeArmitt (on loan from Rokkandy) was one of Dennie’s former bandmates as well. Next was This Albatross, featuring two Crazy Fest alumni – singer Autumn Shiffler and guitarist Phil “Philly Grooves” Wagner. They mixed up energetic rock and country hits from Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Gretchen Wilson, Janis Joplin and more. Another Crazy Fest alumnus, Elaini Arthur, then paid a three-song tribute to Dennie, featuring songs from Reba McIntyre and Patsy Cline before singing her original song “I Don’t Know What to Say.” One of the more emotional moments of the day happened next, as another of Dennie’s contemporaries, singer Steve Shiffler (Autumn’s father) sang a heartfelt acappella rendition of Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain.” Featuring several more Crazy Fest alumni, 100 Proof fired up their country party, doing rowdy favorites from Frankie Ballard, David Lee Murphy, Randy Houser, Luke Bryan and more. Next was the debut of Feast or Famine, a new rock group featuring longtime area entertainer Phil McCaulley on lead vocals and guitar, bassist Aaron Gindlesperger, guitarist Dan Simpson, keyboardist Derek Miller and drummer Paul Merkle. They introduced a powerful blend of vintage rock and blues from names like Santana, Elvis, Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers and more. Felix & the Hurricanes, who had worked

alongside Dennie at various festivals and public events, followed with their brand of classic rock, blues and original songs. Eight members strong with three-piece horn section, The Pub Crawlers next performed their joyous set that mixed ska, funk, swing and blues; before Shallow 9 closed out the music with their rousing dance party mix, including hits from DNCE, Sublime, Cee Lo Green, Michael Jackson, Elle King and more. Since Dennie regularly participated in Delgrosso’s events such as Children’s Miracle Network weekend and the annual Harvestfest celebration, park Director of Marketing Amy Mearkle ended the day by presenting a special plaque to Dennie’s wife, Donna, along with a ceremonial balloon that Donna released into the sky. Dennie Huber Day was an inspiring day that celebrated Dennie, and presented hope that his legacy of charity and supporting local youth will be paid forward.

I journeyed to Knoebel’s Amusement Resort near Elysburg early last month to check out popular Morgantown, WV-based traveling show band Rick K & the Allnighters. During their two evening shows, the group delivered rousing celebrations of rock and pop hits from the 1960’s to present. This group presented a unique dynamic – decked out in matching suits, guitarist Jimmy Hindman and bassist Paul Alan held down the fort with steady, no-nonsense work on their respective instruments. Namesake Rick K gave a vibrant performance, demonstrating a strong voice and bright personality up front. And then there was Steve Moore, “The Mad Drummer.” It did not take long for Steve to erupt into his wild-mannered alias, as he soon became a whirlwind of arms and sticks behind his drum kit, performing one-armed drumming displays, high-flycontinued on pg. 22

ing stick tosses, and crazy interactions with his bandmates, especially Rick. Rick K & the Allnighters covered the gamut; spanning early rock’n’roll from Chubby Checker and The Contours to recent favorites like “Uptown Funk,” and almost everything in between. One unexpected highlight during the group’s final performance of the day was a marriage proposal in front of the stage following the group’s rendition of the Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody.” The Alive @ Five Summer Concert Series at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum continued in late July with the return of New York-based AC/DC tribute Live Wire before a sold-out crowd. Altoona’s No Angels led off the night strong with their set of classic rock favorites. Singer/guitarist Ross Hoover, bassist/ singer Beth Hoover, guitarist/singer Todd Lane and drummer/ singer Todd Mallory received steady cheers from the crowd as they mixed up favorites from Cream, Cheap Trick, Foo Fighters, Badfinger, Tom Petty, Judas Priest, Pink Floyd, David Bowie and many more. Live Wire then served up two sets of AC/DC favorites from throughout the Brian Johnson and Bon Scott eras. The group opened with “Thunderstruck,” and kept the crowd fired up with their namesake song “Live Wire,” “Back in Black,” “Shoot to Thrill,” “Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be,” “Sin City,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “Have a Drink on Me,” “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution,” “Hells Bells,” “The Jack,” “Jailbreak” and many more. This entire group – including singer Chris Antos, rhythm guitarist Bill Voccia, bassist Bill Bowden and drummer Billy Rauff – was strong; but as the night progressed, Live Wire’s ‘Angus’ – Lock Haven’s Mike Hughes on lead guitar and in schoolboy outfit – stole the show. During “Let There Be Rock,” Mike took his Angus-like antics directly out into the crowd, jamming and duck-walking around the grounds and back to the stage in a marathon version of the song, even reprising the classic live version ending from the If You Want Blood, You Got It live set! By song’s end, the group’s inflatable “Rosie” balloon had taken up position atop the right side of the flatcar stage, setting the stage for the song “Whole Lotta Rosie,” before the group finished out their second set with “TNT” and “Highway to Hell.” When the crowd quickly yelled for the encore, the group returned, with Chris dedicating “For Those About to Rock” to all U.S. servicemen serving overseas, as well as members of law enforcement. This song built to its cannonfire homestretch, with cannons blasting confetti throughout the rail yard. Downtown Bedford, Inc. presented the second annual RiverFest last month along the Juniata River near downtown Bedford. The day featured multiple activities including a lumberjack contest, jet-ski demonstrations by champion jet ski rider Eric Malone, children’s activities, arts and crafts, food and refreshments, and live music. As my own band was performing, I got to see music before and after our set. Just prior to our performance, the Five Minutes of Fame showcase invited amateur bands and musicians to take the stage; young garage band trio Asphalt Deluxe and the keyboard-playing father and son duo of Matt & Carson Volbrecht displayed their music and talents. After the Backyard Rockers’ performance, I witnessed Cumberland, MDbased calypso specialists Steel Groovin.’ Formed two years ago, this group features Derek Shank on lead pan (steel drum), Fred Kesner on double pans, bassist/flute player Jim Roderick and drummer Chip Buck. Steel Groovin’ blended calypso, Caribbean, Latin and pop flavors; doing numbers from Pancho Sanchez, the Temptations, Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley and others. Both Derek and Fred were masterful in knowing their respective steel drum pans and tapping out the needed notes from the proper parts of their drums. Chicken wing connoisseurs again enjoyed several summertime wing-eating gatherings in the area – among them, the Tussey Wingfest, which ran for seven successive Thursdays from late July through early this month at Tussey Mountain Amphitheater near Boalsburg. I was able to take in ‘Week Five’ last month, as four wing vendors competed for the most votes from wing enthusiasts to punch their ticket to the finals on Sept. 1. (Gigi’s in State College won this round.) Live music is part of each Wingfest, and Jackie Brown & the Gill Street Band headlined this edition, with Pure Cane Sugar opening. I missed Pure Cane Sugar’s set, but got to see singers Kate Twoey and NattyLou Race join the Gill Street Band during keyboardist John “JT” Thompson’s rollicking original tune “Dance Little Sister Dance,” and croon alongside singer Jackie Brown on LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade.” The Gill Street Band – Jackie, John, bassist Mike Siggins, guitarist Charles Halcomb, drummer Stubby Stubbs, and the four-piece horn section of trombonist Chris Gamble, sax continued on pg. 23...

The Professor continued.... players Ben Kim and Tom Gallagher and trumpet man Brian – lit up the Wingfest stage with their hot blend of brassy soul, funk, R&B and more. Their song selection this night included such gems as Tower Of Power’s “Diggin’ on James Brown,” the Ike & Tina Turner take on “Proud Mary” chased with James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” Blood Sweat & Tears’ “Lucretia MacEvil,” Steely Dan’s “Bodhisattva,” Stevie Wonder’s “Signed Sealed Delivered” and “I Wish,” Average White Band’s “Cut the Cake,” the Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” and when the wing-eating masses called for the encore, “Uptown Funk.” Jackie took charge from the get-go, firing up the crowd with her hearty, soulful and enthusiastic voice and presence. The band was strong, and their enthusiasm radiated throughout the entire performance. A new band I experienced for the first time recently was Dark Perception during their late July performance at Slammin’ Sams in Johnstown. Comprised of singer Bryan Sisco, guitarist Russell Bostian, bassist Donnie Kordell and drummer Jason Smouse, Dark Perception did gritty, hard-hitting rock and metal favorites, including some album cuts I have not heard performed in a while. The group broke out Ozzy-era Black Sabbath

to sit back down. Pittsburgh’s Angry Johnny Stangry returned to the Windber Hotel late last month. Johnny’s guitar work was stunning, dropping my lower jaw to the floor numerous times throughout the show. He, drummer Greg Stewart and bassist John Penrod mixed up progressive blues, blues-rock, funk and touches of country on original songs and select covers. They did songs from Johnny’s “Sike-O” CD such as “The Cologne & Cracker Man,” “Sugar Bush Queen,” the instrumental workout “Eccentric” and more, as well as unique takes on Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See,” Prince’s “Purple Rain,” B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone,” the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You,” Neil Young’s “Down By the River” and more. McGarvey’s presented an indie-rocking triple-bill in late July, featuring Condition Oakland, Native Alloys and Float. Kicking off the night, Schuylkill County’s Condition Oakland – singer/guitarist Tyler Troutman, bassist Chris Leitzel and keyboardist Zack Houser – did a set of alternative-flavored “folk-punk” original songs dealing with themes of death, K-mart and more. With a sound rooted in the classic underground traditions of Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and others, Pittsburgh’s Native Alloys next brought a strong set of

Angry Johnny Strangry & CRS band by Jim Price original tunes. Singer/guitarist Bryan Lepri, bassist Joe Pisciotta and drummer Nick Kowalski played songs from their EP “Naked Light” plus a few newer numbers, displaying alluring melodies with punchy rhythms. Tyrone-based trio Float ended the night with a set that mixed original tunes and instrumencontinued on pg. 24

Erik Marino /Shallow 9 photo by Jim Price deep cuts like “Electric Funeral” and “The Wizard,” as well as tunes from AC/DC, Megadeth, Metallica, Rob Zombie, Pantera, Slayer, Godsmack, Kiss, and even Green Jello/Jelly’s “Three Little Pigs.” Bryan delivered the gravelly snarl up front, with Russell, Donnie and Jason backing him with tight, powerful backdrops. The modest-sized crowd approved of Dark Perception’s brand of heavy rock; they return to Slammin’ Sams on October 1st. I caught a couple of bands at the Windber Hotel in recent weeks. Johnstown favorites Octane brought the high-octane rock in late July before a packed house. Octane – singer Mike, bassist Dave Bambino, guitarist Kenny Murdick and drummer Chris Jimerson – quickly filled the dance floor as they charged into numbers from Rage Against the Machine, Offspring, Billy Idol, Linkin Park, Saliva, Volbeat, Godsmack, Disturbed, Royal Blood, Nine Inch Nails, Skillet, Rob Zombie and many more. Octane delivered tight execution and nonstop momentum through the night, giving dancers no reason to want

The Professor continued.... tals. Also rooted in classic underground/alternative rock, Float – guitarist/singer Adam Stager, bassist Tony DiDomenico and drummer Rich Stever – gave a strong, freewheeling display, and their songs had interesting melodies and arrangements. Their last tune especially displayed a strong Lou Reed/Velvet Underground flavor. This was a good show, and well-attended. During a muggy Saturday night last month, I sought out the air-conditioned comfort of D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg to see Down To The Wire. Formed last year, the current Down to the Wire roster of singer/guitarist Mike Wieland, lead guitarist Kirk Robison, bassist Bob Seiler and drummer Rick Guyer mixed up a variety of favorites past and present. Mike’s voice was in good form as he led the group on tunes from Crosby Stills & Nash, CCR, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Jimmy Buffett, Kid Rock, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Poison and more. Highlights included guest Randy Karle chiming in with harmonica during Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” an arriving bachelorette party joining in on Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon,” and the group’s strong rendering of Gordon Lightfoot’s classic “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” For fans of classic and acoustic rock and pop, keep an eye open for Down

surrounding their New Year’s Eve performance at Canaan Valley Ski Resort in northern West Virginia. Other bands I saw recently included Flight 19 last month as they closed out the annual Summer Sounds concert series at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza, and Felix & the Hurricanes during one of their weekly Sunday jams at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. The area and region mourned the losses of three well-known names last month…Randy Robertson, musician and former owner of Triple R Guitar shop in Lemoyne, passed away on August 5th after a long and documented battle against cancer. He was 57. During his battle against cancer, Randy became a prominent advocate

for the legalization of medical cannabis and took his campaign to the state Capitol, and became an instrumental force in helping to convince state legislators to pass the bill legalizing medical cannabis in April of this year. (See the cover story and tribute to Randy elsewhere in this issue.) Pittsburgh favorite B.E. Taylor died on August 7th from complications stemming from a brain tumor; he was 65. He was best known for his self-named band, the B.E. Taylor Group, which signed with MCA Records in 1982 and scored the Top Ten hit song “Vitamin L” in 1984. B.E. also recorded four Christmas albums and performed his B.E. Taylor Christmas Tour every holiday season. He is heralded as a force that helped open eyes to Pittsburgh’s original music scene in the 1980s, and he continued to perform even after his brain tumor was diagnosed in 2007. And Jake Snyder passed away on August 15th after a long battle with cancer at age 66. Jake was known and liked as a music teacher for the Altoona area school dstrict, before becoming a principal for Tussey Mountain and Penn Cambria. He also sang and played keys for popular central PA gospel group The Vicksburg Quartet, and owned and operated North Recording Studio in Roaring Spring. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of all three men. News and notes: The fourth annual Northern Appalachian Folk Festival happens Sept. 9-11 in downtown Indiana, and will feature a variety of art, workshops, food and more, plus free musical entertainment on two stages; entertainers this year include Southern Culture On The Skids, Jayke Orvis, Dar Williams, The Stickers, Jakobs Ferry Stragglers, The Jaggerz and more...The fifth annual Striking Chords Against

Cancer benefit for the American Cancer Society takes place September 9th at Altoona’s Railroaders Museum; this year’s performers include Matt Pletcher, No Angels, Dave Villani & Steve Oswalt, Flight 19, The Hitchhikers, The Chrome Hearts, Drew Dodson and This Albatross…Our Community Cares presents its 3rd Annual Fall Festival September 18th at Captain Jack Lions Park in Mill Creek; featured entertainers include award-winning Elvis tribute artist Jeff Krick, Miss Supermodels Unlimited 2016 Typhani Janelle Russo, country recording artist Elaini Arthur, an amateur music talent contest

THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND by Jim Price OCTANE by Jim Price to the Wire as they play stages around the area. Lastly, I managed to escape PA last month for one week of rest and relaxation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks. But I couldn’t stay away from live music while I was there, again returning to Scarborough Faire shopping plaza in Duck during their weekly Wednesday Faire Days. This festival offers family and children’s activities, special offers from the plaza’s various shops and eateries, and live music. Performing this day was Bill & Friends, featuring a musician I first met at this same event four years ago, singer/bassist Bill Downing. Bill, guitarist Chris Francis, keyboardist Steve Utt and drummer Roger Deaton played a tasty blend of blues, funk, jazz, southern rock/jam and even some tropical flavors. They did original songs, many from their CD “I’m Do N Good”, as well as select numbers from Robert Cray, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Cliff, Slim Harpo, Ray LaMontagne, Muddy Waters, Delbert McClinton, Bob Dylan and more. Their musicianship was top notch – I especially liked some of the guitar flavors Chris was crafting during the show. This group had a fun vibe, and received nice response from music fans and passers-by. Bill & Friends may be playing in PA late this year,

BIG ATLANTIC – TEMPERED (no label) Pittsburgh’s Big Atlantic introduced their progressive-edged brand of modern rock with their 2012 debut album Motive, and they elaborate on that approach with their sophomore effort, Tempered. Now the foursome of lead singer/guitarist Lee Caruso Jr., bassist Jeff Brinkhus,

keyboardist/guitarist James Zamerski and drummer Nick Hufnagel; Big Atlantic continues to craft clever and detailed melodies with hooks that sink deeper into the cranium on repeated listens. Varied angles of guitar and keyboard attacks merge with innovative rhythmic passages and tempo shifts, all supporting alluring song structures over the disc’s thirteen tracks. These set the foundations for edgier lyrical terrain, as Caruso sings words about the struggle to survive and reaching the breaking point. The hard-hitting “Battling Chains” yearns to survive the nineto-five grind, while the expansive “Count Me In” explores the breaking point and how seeds of revolution are planted. Other songs are more introspective; the REM-toned acoustic-driven disc-opener “Already There” accepts that things are as they are and cannot be changed. “Dig Deep” finds strength from within, “Perfection” accepts that perfection is an unreachable goal, and the disc-closer “This Life” resolves to stand ground and stay the course. The group crafts a love song with “Nattyudoo Caroline,” but dresses down deceit on the angrier “Starting Over.” The performances are strong and solid, and Caruso’s voice shows ample range, emotion and grit. Instrumentally the group’s execution is tight and versatile. The overall sound is balanced and full, letting the group’s melodies and chops do the talking without any excessive studio gloss. Big Atlantic finds a comfortable medium between brainy and catchy on Tempered, crafting an album that should satisfy fans of melody and technical ecstasy alike. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.bigatlantic.com.) WHISKEY BURN – DEVIL’S DUES (no label) Hailing from the Gettysburg area, Whiskey Burn introduces hard-drinking, hard-driving rock’n’roll on their first fulllength CD,Devil’s Dues. The cast of singer Dana Maxwell, rhythm guitarist/singer Frank Maxwell, lead gui-

tarist Frankie Reff, bassist Randy Bargar and drummer Chuck Weidler deliver crunchy, blues-rooted rock over the disc’s 11 tracks. The sound blends jagged rocking guitars and thundering rhythms, plus touches of punk vinegar and blues swagger. Dana and Frank share lead singing duties, giving the disc several angles of attack – including a Joan Jett-like strut on the rowdy disc-opener “Pulling Me Under” and the boozing anthems “Drink All Day” and the group’s title “Whiskey Burn,” plus channeling a George Thorogood bravado on “Church of Gageby” and the disc’s weighty title track “Devil’s Dues.” Whiskey Burn vents some punk-toned venom on “My Way FU,” amps up the raunch-rock factor with “Man in The Boat,” and concocts a slinky striptease anthem with “Sleazy Little Lucy.” The group slows it down a few times, on the rumbling power ballads “Stolen” and “The End,” and the acoustic-driven “Momma.” The performances are spirited and sincere, and exude a spontaneous, live feel. Produced and mixed by Andy Dulak, and recorded in two days at Fleshtone Studios, the CD sounds raw-edged but full, and flows as a whole cohesively. Whiskey Burn serves up a hard shot of rock’n’roll on Devil’s Dues, an intoxicating set that will leave a lasting burn on the cranium. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.whiskeyburn.com.)

ANGRY JOHNNY STANGRY AND HIS C.R.S. BAND – SIKE-O CD (no label) Angry Johnny Stangry has evolved into one of the noteworthy guitar names of the Pittsburgh area music scene during the past 17 years. With his current C.R.S. Band, Johnny displays his guitar skills along with a unique blend of blues-rooted flavors on the Sike-O CD. Citing Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Roy Buchanan and Vince Gill among his influences, Johnny and his band – bassist Ryan Langley and drummer Greg Stewart – mix blues, country, rock, funk and jazz flavors over the disc’s dozen tracks. Blues and country merge to open up the album on “Straw Woman Blues,” and Johnny and band demonstrate a more tongue-in-cheek country flavor on the tunes “Pet Peeve” and “The Sh*t Has Hit the Fan.” They show a variety of rock-geared chops on the disc, including the jazz-informed “Perpetual Sin,” the retro-flavored “Born to Be True” and the hard Stevie Ray-ish “Sugarbush Queen.” They get the funk out with “I’ll Get Up” and the dazzling guitar-driven instrumental “Eccentric” to close the album. Johnny and com-

pany slow it down a few times as well, on the ballads “Longing” and “Where Would I Be in Love,” plus the extended electric blues of “The Cologne & Cracker Man.” Angry Johnny Stangry is front and center on the album, demonstrating his skills with impressive guitar displays as well as a crisp voice

with ample range and cadence. He and his band serve each song, and the results are tasteful as well as dazzling. Engineered by David Granati ad Dave World Productions/Maplewood Studio in Pittsburgh, Sike-O CD sounds crisp and clear, and nicely balanced. Angry Johnny Stangry leaves an impressive calling card with this album, and his talents and musical variety provide an entertaining listen from start to end. into a fresh and distinctive style all their own. All five songs provide infectious hooks delivered with a forceful, bare-knuckled punch to the cranium that grabs and holds listeners’ attention. The band’s instrumental execution is tight and powerful, and Schubert delivers his cryptic words with a driving, gritty howl. The title track “Way of the World” addresses coming to grips with today’s reality, while “Try to Be Us” champions standing one’s ground, and “The Devil’s Cut” ponders the dynamics of temptation. “Heartbeat” and the blues-driven “Get Gone” lean more introspective. The performances are enthusiastic and full-throttle, and drive the songs home with a convincing wallop. Produced and engineered by Anthony Esposito and recorded at Obscenic Arts in Dillsburg, Way of the World sounds sharp, balanced and full. This EP provides an impressive calling card for End Of Silence that will leave fans of hard-hitting, melody-based rock anxious for more. SANE ADVICE By John Kerecz

Think back to your last performance. What did you feel, before you walked on stage? Heart pounding, Butterflies, and shaky? Well, you’re not alone, for what it’s worth; anxiety is pretty common among musicians. Bad news is that you will probably experience some degree of anxiety every time you go on; the good news is that you don’t have to let your nerves control you. If you want your performance to really reach out and grab the audience, you need some of that adrenaline to give it that extra edge. The problem is not the adrenaline, but not knowing how to control, and channel it into your performance. What you want is to play your best, reducing your anxiety will make you more comfortable, but not necessarily help you play better. What you need, is to learn how to channel your anxiety into more dynamic performances. Try these methods to help with this: 1. Courage: Learn how to play courageously, not playing tentatively and worrying about mistakes. 2. Concentration: Learn how to slow down and regain control of your mind under pressure 3. Focus: Learn how to quiet the mind, focus past distractions, and stay in the moment 4. Resilience: Learn how to recover quickly from mistakes, so you don’t make even more. 5. Determination: Learn how to keep yourself motivated and relentless. When you develop these skills, you will no longer be quite as concerned about stage fright or performance anxiety.
