Well September is over and the cold nights of winter are approaching fast. Its time to clean out that chimney or change that air filter and put away the lawn furniture for another long winter. This month started out with a much needed trip up to the Adirondack’s in NY. I have never been there before but I must say I am already planning another trip in the near future to explore more and really enjoy the area. The area offers something for just about everyone interested in outdoor activities. We did a bit of bicycling, exploring the dirt roads that connect endless lakes after lakes throughout the area. Then we hit up some single track on our mountain bikes and finished it off with some canoeing out on the Cedar River Flow. This was our favorite part of the trip as we paddled 4 miles up to find a beautiful campsite along the lake. Sat down by the fire and started to enjoy some beers when out of no where we were treated to a Top Gun style mock dogfight right above the lake in front of our camp. I think most people are aware of my obession with anything that flies and to sit along a remote lake watching my own personal air show unfold above us was something I will never forget. Hell missy was even awe struck by the event and we talked about it the rest of the trip. The next day we paddled the rest of the way up the Cedar River Flow over beaver dams and around endless winding corners exposing spectacular views after views. In all it was about a 10 mile trip on the second day in some of the most beautiful waters I have ever paddled. If you love camping and nature and have never been up to the Adirondacks I would highly recommend you do so. This month I did manage to find some live music the first place we stopped was over to the Perry County Wild Farm. When you think Perry County and Farm you envision corn fields for miles with big tractors and some silo’s. The Perry County Wild Farm is much different. It is a mushroom farm that Shawn Pike has been working non stop on for the last year or so. It is quite the process to farm mushrooms and if mushrooms are your thing then you should look them up on facebook and check out what he is up to. The wealth of knowledge that shawn shared with me was amazing. He has a crazy system of drilling the right size and type of logs for each mushroom species that he is growing with his most popular being the Shiitake mushroom. The day we were there he was having a little get together to tell people about what he is up to. They had local food, some right off the farm, prepared by Lindsay Hutchinson of The Ubuntu House, some vendors setup with interesting local made goodies and last but not least they had LIVE music! The first to entertain was Zach “Kingfish” King. He was already mid set when we arrived but we did get to catch some of his outlaw country style tunes and as usual he did a great job of playing to the
crowd. Next up was Bobby Battaglia of The Jacks doing a solo set. I have never seen him play before and really enjoyed his sound and style of music I look forward to catching the whole band soon. After some arm twisting by the crowd, Shawn Pike took his turn and played us some of his originals with the stand out for me being Hillbilly Outlaw. It was great to get out by a campfire and listen to some live music in the hills of Perry County. Kudos to Shawn, Zach, and Lindsay and all the other vendors for taking part in this unique event. Once the sun went down and the stars came out it was time for us to head over to another show not to far away over at The Dream at Top Notch near New Bloomfield. I was never here before although I drive by it all time. It is a nice sized building set in the hills of Perry County inside a beautiful horse farm. The building is available for Weddings and other large events and features a nice stage and sound system along with plenty of space to host just about any type of large gathering you could think of. This night we were there to see Katz22. Its sad to say that since March I can literally count the number of plugged in rocking full bands that I have seen on one hand. Yes I love small acoustic shows but nothing beats the excitement of a great band rocking out at full volume. Katz22 is comprised of some very talented musicians all with the ability to lead the show. From bass player Rusty Fohner belting out the lyrics for “Love Me 2 Times” and “Rebel Yell”. To Zach Nyce on keys singing everything from “Purple Rain”, “Benny and the Jets”, to a one of kind “Shut Up and Dance/Where the Streets have no name” mashup. Topped off with Kathy Rimm who’s takes her guitar playing to another level for each song. Kathy has a wonderful voice and can belt out songs such as “Sweet Child of Mine”, “Barracuda”, I hate Myself for Loving you”, and many more all while hitting all the leads along the way. Backed by local legend John Hawk on drums who never missed a beat the whole night. If your looking for a band for your next show/event that is sure to please everyone if the crowd then give Katz22 a call you won’t be disappointed. Half way through the show the one and only Rachel Rocks showed up to keep us all in line and partying. Its always fun to watch Rachel at a show as she bounces around like a social butterfly snapping pics, supplying valuable drinks from her oversized flask and making sure everyone is having a good time. It is always clear that the PA Musician Magazine is on the scene when she is there. To say I am proud of her would be an understatement and there is now way the PA Musician would be the same without her. Please if you see her out and about please say hi and let her know how much you appreciate all the hard work she does. At the least you will most likely get a shot and if your lucky maybe some crazy ball of gummy fruit. Love you little sister thanks for all that you do. So what is happening in PA for October? Well the Molly Pitcher Brewing Company is hosting two events at The Meadowbrooke Gourds farm in Carlisle The First one on the 10th with music by Shine Delphi, Grace Mahar and Seldom Said No. The Second event on the 24th with live music from Hold Fast and Bubba. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
What a whirlwind of a month! September is always crazy with school starting and birthday celebrations! I was extremely spoiled by friends and family and had 2 beach trips this month. My baby Zack turned 18, which of course was a whole weekend celebration! It still doesn’t seem real that my son is a senior in high school! Time flies when you’re having fun! I was very happy to at least get out to a few great shows. Part of my birthday celebration this month was heading over to Derek Henry’s to sit in on a Facebook Live “Thirsty Thursday”
event. It was awesome seeing it happen from behind the camera. We had a great night of shenanigans which included enough laughing to make my face and stomach hurt! Derek is finally getting some shows scheduled again, but it is sometimes frustrating as rules change and venues are still cancelling shows at the last minute. He’s just very grateful for the shows he has and the shows coming up as a solo artist, and he even has 2 full band shows with Observe the 93rd. One of those shows is October 3rd at the benefit for Children’s Miracle Network. Check out the ad and schedule in this issue! Observe the 93rd plays at 7pm. I’m really hoping that the rumor of Facebook taking away the ability for musicians to do Facebook Live videos is not true. So many musicians have been able to make a couple extra bucks by performing from home and through the interwebs. Not to mention during those pure dark times at the beginning of Covid I’ll never forget when Six Bar Break did their 1st Live Stream! I was
so excited and LOVED listening along while I made my family dinner. It was so inspiring and made my life feel somewhat normal to hear music being played and seeing that such awesome friends and musicians were still alive and well during all of the craziness. I’m a little nervous to see what happens to music over Winter.. I’m hoping musicians will get to move indoors and still have gigs for us all to enjoy! And if not, I REALLY hope we can at least still turn on our phones, etc. plop on the couch and watch a show online. My next night out on the town I headed to Midway Bowling for The Juice. Midway Bowl is still my favorite outdoor venue to see a band. They actually have full bands and acoustic acts. The Juice was playing as a full band. It’s a bummer that we still can’t get up and dance, but at least you can sit back and pretend you are sitting continued on next page...

by the ocean out on the sand while you listen to a fantastic band. Tammy does an amazing job at lead vocals. They can also really mix up their set list with 4 people taking turns taking over the mic and singing lead. The Juice has really built up their fan base. It’s awesome to see the seats packed and everyone having a great night out listening to live music. I do love working from home for my day job, but when 5pm comes along I can’t break out of the house fast enough. Lucky for me Flinchy’s was having live music on a Thursday night so I thought I’d stop by. Devon Beck was belting out some amazing country tunes, and it was just what I needed to get through the rest of the week. Not only was she playing a lot of great country hits from artists like Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, and Morgan Wallen; she also has a few great original songs. One song was titled “Love Me or Get Lost”, it was a great song, that was basically the theme song on how I proposed to my husband. We’ve been married for over 21 years, so it must’ve worked! ways intimidating checking out new venues alone. When I arrived I found out Josh and Missy came out to the show too! The gang was together again which made the party even better! The Dream at Top Notch was a great venue with a nice big stage and plenty of space and seating to socially distance yourselves from others but still have a great time! I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for future shows there. This past month I’ve also had the privilege and the honor to check out a few local churches. The praise and worship teams at every church I’ve been to absolutely amaze me. There are so many amazing musicians out there that I don’t even know, not to mention the light and sound technicians. Music is such an amazing way to bring people together, and a way to let my mind just forget about everything else and just enjoy the show. Kudos to everyone who donates their time and their talents to such an amazing ministry. Rocktober is definitely going to live up to its name. There are quite a few shows happening that are full band shows, kicking off October 3rd with the Children’s Miracle Network Music Festival in Mechanicsburg. Check out all of the schedules in this issue and get out there and support music anyway you can before it gets

Out & About continued... down in Nashville writing songs and performing, so when you see her in the area, make sure you go out and catch her show! Some last minute schedule changes had me stopping by The Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey for one of their Decked Out Live shows with Light Up the Moon Acoustic. Dave and Joe were rocking the guitars and vocals while Rob and Chris were sharing sets on the Cajon. It was awesome to see their regular “casino” crowd was out in full force. The crowd was requesting all kinds of party songs that are a little difficult to do acoustically, but the guys did their best and everyone was having a great time. The Vineyard and Brewery has a unique set up for guests with a nice big deck area, but also lots of lawn space with real fire pits where you can sit back and relax and still hear the music. It was a beautiful night for an outside show and definitely a great time with friends and some rock n’ roll. I took a trip up into the heartland of Perry County to go to The Dream at Top Notch in New Bloomfield for Katz 22 rockin’ out as a full band. I was excited to check out a new venue, and I was even more excited to see a full band. Once again Katz 22 didn’t disappoint, their harmonies and all of the different songs they have on their setlist keep you dancing and rocking the night away. I’m grateful Angie went with me on this adventure. It’s al-

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! As Summer 2020 comes to an end and society continues to navigate the pandemic, the music community also maneuvers within the health guidelines. Taste Key West restaurant in downtown Harrisburg featured Saturday nights with The Swisher Sweets, Smooth Like Clyde, Emily’s Toybox, The Luv Gods and Yam Yam this past month outside on 2nd Street. Radio station, The River 97.3, also put on a great event on September 19th at Haar’s Drive-In Theatre in Dillsburg with a live performance from legendary local band, The Sharks. It was quite a Randy/ The Juice / photo by Rachel Rocks different concert experience in vehicles at a drive-in movie theatre, but none the less a live full-band concert. The Sharks performed on a full stage while being broadcasted on the big screen, radio station and streamed live online. The Central PA band popular in the 80s and known for winning the MTV Basement Tape Competition in 1985 played their hits, “Only Time Will Tell,” “Holiday” and “On My Own.” NATIONAL NEWS: After postponing several shows because of the coronavirus pandemic, Elton John announced that his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour” will return to North America on January 19th, 2022, in New Orleans. John also announced rescheduled 2022 dates for Houston, Detroit, New York City, Miami, Toronto and Montreal. In July John announced new dates in Europe. His global tour will officially return on September 1st, 2021 in Berlin. “I’ve been enjoying my time at home with the family while the world navigates its way through the COVID pandemic. But, I really miss being on the road and performing for my beloved fans in my Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour,” John said. “While the scientists are making great progress, we are making big plans for a return to touring that will allow us to ensure the health and safety of everyone.” Original tickets will be honored at the rescheduled performances. A friend called in the check after not hearing from him since the previous Thursday, police reported that with no other obvious signs of foul play, it is believed he died of a probable drug overdose. His father, acclaimed singer-songwriter Steve Earle, simply posted a family photo of father and son. Steve Earle had also battled drug addiction as a younger man, and bestowed the middle name “Townes” on Justin in honor of his friend, the late, legendary Townes Van Zandt. Justin’s struggles with addiction were well known; he talked about them at length, and often, for years. In and out of rehab, he still managed to forge a formidable body of work in between the rollercoaster of sobriety, relapse, sobriety and relapse. Nationals continued... at The Queen in Wilmington, Delaware, opening for Brian Fallon. Riley Gale, the 34-year-old lead singer for Dallas-based thrash band Power Trip died August 24th, according to family. The band, known for its faithful yet fresh rendition of thrash metal akin to the likes of Slayer and with critical acclaim for its latest LP, 2017’s Nightmare Logic, was growing as a touring band, headlining clubs in 2018 and supporting well-regarded heavy bands like High On Fire, The Black Dahlia Murder and Trivium, as well as landing high-profile festival slots like Exit 111 in Tennessee. An outpouring of support followed the news of Gale’s passing, with bands like Hatebreed, Knocked Loose, Code Orange, Anthrax and many others paying tribute on social media. The mask was the sartorial statement of the night as Lady Gaga won five honors at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards on August 30th. Pop stars sent important messages to viewers about the current state of the world. Between curbing coronavirus and reminding that Black Lives Matter, the semi-virtual MTV Video Music Awards broadcast was a glammy, sometimes awkward but celebratory. Originally scheduled to take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, months of planning went out the window when caronavirus swept through New York City. “Wear a mask. It’s a sign of respect,” Gaga said during one of her several appearances on stage as she accepted awards like artist of the year, song of the year and the MTV Tricon award. With an electronic mask, Gaga performed
a medley of her songs, including “Stupid Love,” “Chromatica II” and “911.” It wasn’t always clear where performances were taking place. Maluma sang from Brooklyn, while The Weekend performed from Manhattan. Pop all-stars BTS, performed from South Korea. Miley Cyrus, also performed live with her performance of “Midnight Sky” by sitting on top of a large disco ball, replicating her viral “Wrecking Ball” clip from 2013.

It’s Rocktober, so what a perfect month to have The Boogie Woogie King of Rock N’ Roll on the cover, Joey Welz, along with his most recent collaborator, Crazy John (John Kerecz). Even though Joey will tell you Fats Domino was playing some rock and roll piano licks at the same time Joey was introducing the world to his Boogie Woogie ways, Joey is the one who helped add the Rock to the big hit “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley and
Joey Welz the Comets. He wasn’t actually on the original recording, but he has made several versions of the iconic song throughout the years. Jimmy Myers, aka Jimmy DeKnight was the original writer of the song, Joey just added in his own flare, to make it current and happening for the kids in the 50s who were just starting to listen to rock n’ roll. Back in 2018 at the Millennium Music Conference I saw Joey being honored by receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award for being the only artist that has written, recorded and released new music every year from 1955-2018, and he hasn’t stopped yet! He has released over 100 Different Albums, 60 of which were vinyl, and over 2,000 songs! Crazy John has been writing songs for years, but he’s never actually recorded and released a song until now, after he decided to team up with Joey. Crazy John brought his ideas to Joey, who just added to it a bit, to October, 2020
make the songs ready to record. Since Joey has over 60 years experience of putting songs together, John knew he couldn’t go wrong by working with Joey. So far, they have released 3 songs together: “No Vacation Blues”, “Mr. Money”, and “I’m a Traveler”. The last two songs both made it into the Top 20 sales and downloads on the Indie Music Network’s Charts for the Best Indie Country Songs. That’s right, I said Country! Crazy John wasn’t originally planning on his songs having such a country flare to them, but Joey stays on top of what’s hot and what’s selling, so he created songs that he knew would go over well in today’s market. “I’m a Traveler” had some extra input from John’s son, Justin Kerecz and their family friend Eric Staley. When they aren’t jamming with John, you can catch them in the Philly based band Kennel Club. “I’m a Traveler” gained such popularity, that it was even submitted for consideration to the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards for Country Song of the Year. All of their songs are taking country back to their roots, the way country music should be. Joey Welz has had his ears to the air waves for years as the Owner and CEO of Canadian American Records and Caprice International Records. John Kerecz When I go do the Cover Story interviews, I never know where I’ll wind up, and this time it was one of the coolest experiences ever. Joey has transformed his ENTIRE house (except for his bedroom) into the Rock Around the Clock Museum. Pretty much every inch of every wall is covered with well over 250 pictures and tons of music memorabilia. I’ve heard stories from Joey at the MMC every year, but I definitely wasn’t expecting this! When Joey would meet or play with anyone famous he always made sure he got a picture taken with them, there are way too many to mention them all, but some of the pictures I recognized were with stars like Chuck Berry, Greg Allman, Fats Domino, Mark Farner, Bo Didley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Dick Clark, ZZ Top, The Village People, and so many more! I could’ve spent HOURS looking around at his collection. While Joey was Pennsylvania Musician Magazine
giving me the tour it was also cool that he couldn’t walk by one of his keyboards without stopping to play a song. I heard quite a few songs, of course “Rock Around the Clock,” “Shake, Rattle and Roll” and Fats Domino’s song, “Blueberry Hill,” plus a few other rockabilly hits. It’s hard to believe that Joey Welz has recorded and released a new song every year for the past 65 years, but Joey says it’s really not hard, he just writes about what’s on his mind, and he tries
to make this a better world to live in through his music. He has written quite a few songs that have been about crazy times in our world, the most recent being, “World War Covid-19”. The song is a little ray of hope, with a lyric in the song about the ‘rainbow at the end of a storm’. It even ends with the line, “That’s the American way, but really, it’s the human being way…” He also won an award for the Patriotic Song of the Year in 2001 when he wrote “The Day America Cried” after 9/11. Joey Welz is truly a walking encyclopedia of rock n’ roll history and is one of the few original rock n’ roll piano men performing live today. As long as he is alive and well, he will continue to bring us music to remember. Crazy John is very grateful that he was able to be schooled by the ‘Godfather of Music’, and he’s also grateful he was able to bring Justin and Eric in to experience what it’s like to record with a legend like Joey Welz. six months, Husky Hummel, one of the owners of Short Bus Brew House, asked if he could jam along with me on a few songs when I played the Bus. After a few times we added Erik Bryant on lead guitar. This “band” play a lot of different music and expands my set list a bit with some 90s stuff I normally wouldn’t play. We play music, have a few good Short Bus brews, and have lots of fun.” I think I heard something about Erik not being added to the trio until after his release from state prison, but their press agent would neither confirm nor deny this part. With menus from several places local to them that will deliver, as well as a great selection of beers, it’s a pretty cool place to hang out and catch some tunes. I had a couple IPA’s myself...and although I forget the name, and am admittedly pretty new to IPA’s, I enjoyed them a lot. Following a strong recommendation from Ed, I went up to Iron Vines Winery in Sunbury to catch Callie Tomblin. Callie describes herself as a self-taught versatile Indie artist and I’d

Another month or so, come & gone. Things are slowly starting to open up again, at least for now. Hopefully it continues along that path so we can try to get back to what we remember as “normal”. Between the continuing restrictions and other life stuff, I was still able to get out a few times for live music and each of them was a breath of fresh air. All but one were open air shows and all but two were at local breweries and wineries (which you may have guessed by now are favorites of mine anyhow), and almost all of them “new to me” venues, which is awesome. Most of them were musicians that I am fortunate enough to call my friends... some I’ve known longer than others, but all with a genuine love for their art that came through in every note, every lyric. Each time the fans, whether a large crowd or small, were just happy to be able to get out and enjoy some great music. All of these things, combined, are why I love what I do. Please, when you have a moment, stop in at these venues and thank them for continuing to support live music and bringing it to all of us to enjoy. I know they’ll appreciate a kind word or two as well as any business you can throw at them. With all that said...on to the music! My first trip out was up to the Selinsgrove Commons (they also hold a farmers’ market there on Saturday mornings

during the summer btw) to see the Becky Blue Band play an evening set. Starting off with a BB King cover, the evening only got better from there with covers from Johnnie Cash, Rolling Stones, and The Allman Brothers. The group spaced the covers out with a number of raw, gritty and rocking originals. Second trip out was to see my friends in The Mighty River Band for my first time visiting Shy Bear Brewing in Lewistown. If you haven’t caught The Mighty River Band in any of my previous articles, these guys are an outstanding Grateful Dead tribute band from the Harrisburg area. Not only do they play everyone’s favorite Dead songs, but they dig out the more obscure tunes as well. Seeing them perform is always a treat for me and I’m sure they’ll show up in this article again the future. As for Shy Bear, I was in love the moment I walked in. They’ve got a great atmosphere with awesome and courteous staff serving a very tasty menu as well as a great selection of well made brews (again...I’ll recommend the IPA LOL). These folks are sincerely committed to their craft, as well the environment...so much so that they have outfitted the property with 317 solar panels to power their operation. Definitely a place worth checking out! My next trip out for this article was up to Lewistown to Short Bus Brew House to see my pal Ed Varner’s new band, Project EHE. Playing covers from Bon Jovi, Alice In Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Seven Nation Army, and many more...inter-spaced with Ed’s gift for “comedy”, it made for a very entertaining night. the boys put on an outstanding show that was much more than country...they covered songs from Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Prince, Duran Duran, and even Charlie Daniels “Devil Went Down To Georgia” with a mashup in the middle including Led Zepplin, Steely Dan and a few others. Maybe not your “typical” Country concert, but they played to a large and diverse crowd that loved every second of the show. The Party Barn is located on a private residence and closed to the public, but they’ve done an incredible job of taking a barn (that is used to store their farm equipment during the week as I understand it) and turning it into a great place to enjoy live music with all of the owners’ friends...and they have a LOT of great friends I found out the other night! So there it is, another month of music through my ears and eyes. I love finding new to me venues and artists, and I got a
say that’s pretty spot on. Callie played covers from KT Tunstall, Prince, Any Winehouse, Bill Withers and others, as well as several of her own originals. She’s got a very strong and soulful voice with just a hint of “rasp” to it that seems contrary to her young age, and I thoroughly enjoyed her music. This was my first stop in at the Iron Vines Winery...and all I can say is “WOW!”. After meeting Dave, the owner, we were treated to a tour of the entire building and operation, as well as tasting some of his outstanding wines. All of his wines are made from juice imported from Italy and California and it’s very easy to taste the effort that he puts into his creations. On top of this, he’s just a really cool and down to

earth guy. I can’t recommend this place enough, and I certainly can’t wait to get back there. Next trip out was back up to Shy Bear Brewing after getting a nice message from Chad with Nate Myers & The Aces to come up there and catch their show. Who am I to turn down such an offer? Nate and the guys started out with a Muddy Waters tune, then moved into some covers from Bill Withers, Dan Fogarty, and G. Love. They also jammed out a number of their originals including two of my personal favorites, “Beauty All Around” and “Jager and Waffles”. I hadn’t seen the guys since last November I think it was, but sitting and hanging with them for a short bit after the show made it feel like it’d just been last week. I also got to meet the owner of Shy Bear on this trip, Jason and had a nice chat with him about the brewery and the live music scene that he’s become a part of. I’m pretty sure you’ll be seeing his name more here in the future. My final trip out for this article was to The Party Barn in Mechanicsburg to see the Colt Wilbur Band. Now, admittedly... country is not real big in my playlist. I think this is largely due to growing up in a house where it just wasn’t played and a lack of exposure to it. That being said, there’s certainly country music that I’ve found over the years that I’ve enjoyed but haven’t explored further for whatever reason. All that being said to illustrate that I wasn’t very sure what to expect going in to this show. Any worries I had were for naught...simply put, we had a great time. Colt and October, 2020

With indoor live music venues still under COVID-related capacity and other restrictions that largely prevent them from hosting bands and performers, outdoor situations have again provided most of the live music I have witnessed in recent weeks. But with cold weather bringing an end to those outdoor situations soon, and a vague new Facebook policy possibly slamming the door on live-streaming music events on that platform, musicians may face stiffer challenges for bringing their performances and music to fans. The coming weeks will tell. Although COVID-19 concerns shelved many festival events this year, one area music festival event that was able to happen was the 8th annual Route 22 Rock & Blues Festival, which took place over two days in late August at the Lincoln Caverns Campground near Huntingdon. This year’s event featured a blend of familiar and popular area bands, plus a few new ones. One of the new ones, Buckshot Tea Party, kicked off the Friday night festival slate. Five members strong including former Left For Dead members RJ Payne on lead vocals, Bill Nusom on bass and vocals, Rich Johnson on lead guitar and Dave Russell on drums; Buckshot Tea Party fired off a mixture of hard-rocking favorites from Foo Fighters, Creed, Collective Soul, Metallica and more. Another new band performing later that night was New Wrath. Featuring former Assault Method members Mike Houck on lead vocals, John Liebal on guitar and Cody Kensinger on drums, plus Jesse Evans on bass; New Wrath brought the wrath with ferocious heavy metal and metalcore. The group did several numbers from Lamb Of God, including “Now You’ve Got Something to Die For” and “Walk With Me in Hell.” They also did numbers from Pantera, Devildriver, Chimaira and more. Saturday’s leg of the festival also saw two new bands, Mediocre Gatsby and Abstentious. Featuring Kevin “Kevo” Quinn on lead vocals and guitar, bassist/singer Andy Mathias and drummer Greg Brigham, Mediocre Gatsby introduced their original style, mixing elements of punk, alternative rock and pop. They played a number of original songs, including numbers off their soon-to-be-released debut EP. Some songs included “Candy Hearts and Razorblades,” “Bruce Campbell’s Tunnel of Love,” their title tune “Mediocre Gatsby” and “Dead Summer”; they also included a cover of Tom Petty’s “American Girl.” Youthful trio Abstentious unleashed spirited punk rock, mixing original songs and select covers. They fired up the audience with their go-forbroke velocity and enthusiasm; some of their original numbers included their opener “Means Well, Oh Well,” “Dynamic Disaster” and “Milquetoast Melodrama,” and they also did tunes from the Misfits, Descendents, NOFX, Minor Threat and Blink 182. Also performing during this year’s festival were Hate Grenade, Wrath Of Typhon, Negan and Black Sun during Friday night, and Donny Burns & the 3rd Degree, The PennSoulvanians, Jae Smith (with guest Rick Ramsey), On The Brink, The Blacksnakes Blues Band, Matt Otis & the Sound, Faded Flowers, Maul, The Snipped and The Roof. The combination of strong musical performances and excellent late summer weather throughout the weekend made this year’s Route 22 Rock & Blues Festival one of the best yet, and provided a great time for all who attended. Phil McCaulley closed out the Carrolltown Public Library’s Wednesday “Music in the Park & Basket Auction” summer concert series in late August at Carrolltown’s American Legion Park. Armed with acoustic guitar and his rich, strong voice, Phil entertained a large audience with a wide-ranging mixture of hits and favorites, spanning early rock’n’roll, classic rock and country. Long known throughout the area for his years as an Elvis Presley impersonator, Phil celebrated Elvis with renditions of “Burning Love,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “All Shook Up” and “Suspicious Minds,” as well as the Elvis version of “How Great Thou Art” and “An American Trilogy,” which he dedicated to all frontline personnel and veterans in the audience. Community support for this concert was strong, as food sales, a basket raffle and 50/50 drawing all helped raise a nice chunk of money to support the Carrolltown Public Library. Labor Day weekend was very different for me in this strange and chaotic year. Although one of my favorite annual festival events, the Labor Day weekend Cambria City Ethnic Festival in Johnstown, was shelved this year due to COVID-19 concerns, I still got to spend part of the holiday weekend near Johnstown, courtesy of another event, Stu-Fest, held in a backDerek Gresh /Nag Champions
yard near the Westmont section of Johnstown. Started five years ago by Mike Borstnar (guitarist and singer for the Stone Bridge Blues Band) as a tribute to his departed friend, Patrick “Stu” Stewart, Stu-Fest has grown from a backyard get-together into a benefit event. Donations raised each year go toward a scholarship fund in Stu’s name awarded through the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies and set up through Patrick’s alma mater, Greater Johnstown Senior Tom Yannitelli / Rivot High School. As Patrick was a Pennsylvania state trooper, the scholarship is awarded to eligible students entering the field of law enforcement. This year’s Stu-Fest transitioned from a musician jam into two scheduled performing acts. Jeff Perigo and Scott Jeffreys began the music, doing a selection of classic rock, folk, blues and original songs. Jeff handled most of the lead vocals as he and Scott played and stretched out on numbers from the Grateful Dead, Stephen Stills, The Mavericks, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd and more. Along the way, guest Russ Lauf sang lead vocals on the Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers,” and fest host Mike Borstnar added electric guitar to a version of B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone.” Felix & the Hurri-
canes soon followed with two sets of classic and southern rock favorites. Lead ‘Cane, singer and guitarist Felix Kos, bassist and singer Jeff Clapper, and drummer and singer Bob Watters kept the Stu-Fest audience happy with numbers from Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, the Allman Brothers, Tommy James & the Shondells, Marshall Tucker Band, Johnny Cash, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ides Of March, Blackfoot, Doobie Brothers and more. As always, the Hurricanes dialed up the right mixture of songs to keep onlookers content. This Stu-Fest successfully raised $1,800 toward the scholarship fund, and was a laid-back good time. Patton Park in Patton hosted their “End Of Summer Jam” fundraiser last month, which featured a classic car show, basket raffle, chicken dinner and live music. I arrived as Nag Champions Mystery Band was under way to kick off the music. The group stretched out and jammed on original songs off their three albums, as well as tunes from the Allman Brothers, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, CCR, and a rendition of Stephen Stills’ “Love the One Your With” done with a grooving Sublime “What I Got”-like arrangement. Next up was new rocking northern Cambria County trio Rivot. Although the band itself is new, Michael Thomas of its three members are seasoned the PennSoulvanians performers of Cambria County stages, with Kenny Karlheim on lead vocals and guitar, Tom Yannitelli on bass and vocals, and Bill Cunningham on drums and vocals. Together, they did a blend of favorites from throughout the rock’n’roll spectrum – tapping 1960s hits from The McCoys, Them and Spirit, 1970s numbers from Neil Young, the Doors and ZZ Top, 1980s tunes from Greg Kihn Band and the Stray Cats, and 1990s classics from Tom Petty and the Gin Blossoms. Their performance was tight and sturdy, and Rivot kept audience members rivetted through the duration of their set. Kenny Karlheim stayed on stage to close out the music with his new duet with singer Mellissa Vella. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 967 Blair County presented the fifth annual Vets Fest benefit last month outdoors at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society, featuring six bands and one solo performer. That solo artist, singer Anna Oberneder, led off the afternoon with a strong rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” and returned later to sing Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” and Gretchen Wilson’s “Redneck Woman.” Recently crowned Miss Kittanning International 2021, Anna Phil McCaulley
actively advocates for the physical and mental well-being of area veterans. All six bands this day were interconnected and shared common members, with both keyboardist Ken Civils and singer/ guitarist Don Osborn each playing in four of the bands. Family traditions were represented on the stage as well, as three father and son pairings helped bring the music this day – Ken and Kris Civils, Don and Sean Osborn, and Bill and Shawn Hocherl (Shawn was the sound engineer for the entire day). The first group of the day, The Band Oz, mixed rock’n’roll, blues and jazz numbers. Don, Ken, Bill Hocherl behind the drum kit, Bill Hunter on bass and Craig Albright on guitar did favorites from Dire Straits, B.B. King, the Allman Brothers, Stephen Stills and more. Highlights of their set included a take on the Frank Sinatra-popularized “Fly Me to the Moon,” and Don’s stellar vocals and guitar work on Gary Moore’s “Still Got the Blues.” Next was Flashbang, performing upbeat rock’n’roll of the 1970s and 80s. guitarist/keyboardist/singer Ryan Weaver and bassist Mitch Neuder quickly set the festive mood for the afternoon in their opening set, kicking off with Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” and Cake’s “Short Skirt Long Jacket,” before firing up the funk with the first of several grooving medleys to trigger the first dancing of the afternoon. Shallow 9 bounced between funky grooves, hip-hop rhymes (courtesy of Mike), a 1980s hit with The Outfield’s “Your Love,” and a touch of ska with The Interrupters’ “She’s Kerosene.” The PennSoulvanians then took stage to continue the fun – singer/guitarist Chet Denny, Michael Thomas on raps and rhymes, Nate Nagle on bass, Brett Fanelli on keys and Todd behind the kit demonstrated their blend of original soul, funk, jazz, acoustic rock, reggae and hip-hop flavors. (Since this performance, the group subsequently announced the addition of Mike Stanley to their roster to handle bass duties.) For their latter set, Shallow 9 opened with Ryan Weaver fronting the group on several modern rock numbers, before they took it funky again with tunes from the Commodores and Prince. A multiple-song funk/hip-hop medley triggered a sizable dance party down the homestretch, capping an afternoon of musical fun in the sun. Local punk rock took over the McGarvey’s lot last month for the outdoor “Band Lot Party.” Enjoying the chance to perform before tending to leaf-raking chores soon, punk-rocking dads The Snipped kicked things off with a fast-firing set of their original songs. Mike Wax on lead vocals and guitar, Jeff Reid on lead guitar, Frank Conrad on bass and Justin Burket on drums mixed several new songs with tunes from their “#dadcore” CD. The Snipped were fast and furious on numbers such as “Waste My Time,” “Hand That Feeds,” Jeff Pittinger/ White Witch “The Mine,” “All We Know,” the 40-second rant “Roadie,” “Bus” and “Friday Night.” And they included their popular punk-fueled take on Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” The Railroad City Murder Machines followed with their high-powered brand of punk-infused rock. Cheeze and Tim Mort on guitars and lead vocals, Dan Mort on bass and Billy Mort on drums hammered forth a number of new tunes such as “Gloria” and “Cut It Loose,” and did several songs off their self-titled CD including” and “These Streets.” Again this group showed its knack for mixing melody, chunky riffs, gusto and swagger, firing up the audience along the way. with live acoustic music. Among the performers was Stephanie & the Wild Hearts first couple Stephanie and Bob Onkst. Their acoustic performance enabled Stephanie and Bob to do some songs outside of their full band persona. Some of the songs they did this night included versions of Green Day’s “Good Riddance,” Buddy Holly’s “Oh Boy” and Connie Francis’ 1960 hit “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool.” They also did favorites from the Eagles, Gretchen Wilson, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Tom Petty and others. And as they were performing during the 19th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on America, Stephanie and Bob closed their show with a gospel music tribute, presenting the Carter Family pairing of “I’ll Fly Away” and “I Saw the Light.” Both Stephanie and Bob’s voices were in good form, and they blended for some excellent vocal harmonies along the way. I also caught one live stream performance recently, when Bedford’s Coltt Winter Lepley played live and online in late August. Performing from Boston where he’s currently studying for his MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree at Emerson College, Coltt strummed his practice acoustic guitar “boat paddle” and generated a good-sounding mixture of folk, Americana sounds and his own folksy original tunes. With the recent passing of singer and songwriter Justin Townes Earle, Coltt saluted his memory with a rendition of Justin’s “Lone Pine Hill.” He also remembered John

Prine with two of his songs, “Angel From Montgomery” and “Illegal Smile.” Coltt also sang other interesting and not-often-heard numbers from the catalogs of Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welch, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Richard Thompson, The Civil Wars, Bob Dylan, plus the Cab Calloway take on “Saint James Infirmary.” Coltt also did a few of his own numbers, introducing a song about his impressions of big city life called “City Livin,’” his Halloween-themed “The Witch,” and his closing number, “God Bless the Working Man.” Coltt shared his inspirations for his own songs, plus expressed his admiration for the artists he covered and their influence on his own music. Coltt proudly carries the torch for traditional-styled folk music – as he frequently proclaims on his social media posts, “Folk Ain’t Dead!” On a sad note, the area music scene mourned the passing of Paul Lanzendorfer on Sept. 21 at age 70 following an illness. Paul was a longtime musician who had performed with various bands over 55 years; including his longtime stint as bass player for Cambria County-based rock band Totem. News and notes…Due to concerns and restrictions stemming from COVID-19, the annual “Patched Together: A Day of Music for the Healing Patch” benefit, usually scheduled for November, has been cancelled for this year; instead of the live public event, several online performances will take place during this month to raise donations for the Healing Patch, with Matt Otis & the Sound and Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors confirmed thus far...The inaugural “Homegrown Music Festival” will happen on Oct. 17 at the Lorain Borough Park in Johnstown; performing there will be Black Cat Moan, The Ne’er Do Wells, Afro N’at, Even the Odds, Van Waylon and the Derek Woods Band, with proceeds helping the Community Foundation of the Alleghenies in their support of local charities…Altoona native and former NBC “The Voice” contestant

DON HUGHES – A HERO’S JOURNEY (no label) An Altoona native who now calls Pittsburgh home, Don Hughes released his first instrumental album in 2008, and followed it eight years later with an instrumental Christmas CD. Don attempts something more ambitious with his latest instrumental album undertaking, A Hero’s Journey, as he yearns to tell an entire story musically from start to end, without singing or lyrics. That story comprises nine of the album’s 13 tracks, as Don sonically constructs his musical narrative, complete with beginning, middle and ending; painting in musical pastels of symphonic, progressive rock and John Carpenter-informed movie soundtrack dynamics. Each track takes on a different mood and flavor, as Don varies the instrumentation between his changing keyboard textures, plus tones of guitars, woodwinds, drums and more. The opening piece, “Ordinary World,” blends layers of keys, synths, hard guitar edges and beats into a sturdy foundation from which to launch the ensuing adventure. “Adventure Calling” ramps up the tempo as its piano-like melody heightens anticipation for where this musical story is headed. Piano and acoustic guitar flavors establish curiosity and apprehension on the dark-toned “Accepting the Challenge?” before a hard-hitting homestretch suggests that the song title’s question has been answered. A tranquil, reflective vibe creates calm before the storm on “Finding an Old Friend,” before “The First Confrontation” charges into fast-firing, hard-hitting action. String flavors and piano give “Tragedy” a decidedly solemn mood swing, before woodwind and guitar touches give “Reflections” a new age texture. “Approaching Destiny” rebuilds tension and anticipation, leading to the climactic resolution to Don’s musical tale, “The Final Battle.” The remaining four tracks are completed works from some of Don’s other projects – two are original compositions, the ethereal “Point of Past Return” and the electronic-toned mini-journey “Lost in My Own Mind.” Don tips his hat to John Carpenter with his update of one of Carpenter’s best-known movie themes, “Halloween,” and the album closes with seasonal greetings via a rendition of “Little Drummer Boy.” It’s easy to realize Don’s evolution as a composer and arranger here, as his nine-song musical narrative establishes a cinematic ebb and flow, rising suspense, action and resolution. The beauty here is that no two listeners will derive the same exact experiences, and the story will manifest itself differently for each person who hears it. A Hero’s Journey successfully presents its musical narrative, and suggests that motion picture soundtracks and themes might be an arc in Don Hughes’ future. returned to the Johnstown area and have released their latest album, Love It or Leave It. Both musicians play multiple instruments; Chris handles lead vocals while Nicole provides drumbeats and backing vocals. Anti-Corn League continues with their experimental brand of garage rock, mixing in elements of 1960s and 70s-era psychedelic rock through the album’s 11 tracks. We hear various layers and tones of keys and synthesizers underscoring edgy guitar rock, along with varying degrees of vocal and other distortion effects as Chris and Nicole explore new sonic terrain. At the center of these songs are catchy and intriguing pop-geared melodies, alluring chord progressions, and simply-stated lyrics centering on youthful memories and self-reflection. That youthful reminiscence appears on the album’s opening track, “Kids,” with its hard-driving garage punk; the group unleashes outright punk vinegar later on “It Ain’t Happenin’” and the Nicole-fronted “Summer Wastin.’” The group delivers uptempo, jangly rock and a play on words with “Read Me a Parabol,” and a bouncing, Beatlesque vibe on “Jack Kero Wacked.” They merge indie-rock dynamics with hook-laden melodies on such numbers as “Hangin’ in Defeat,” “Jingly Mint” and the retro-geared “My Brain to Be.” They conjure a darker indie-rock flavor on “So Slow, So Wonderful,” and a dreamier, flower-power tone on “White Lie.” The mix of garage rock and psychedelic flavorings keeps this album interesting from start to end. Chris and Nicole throw caution to the wind and freely explore sonic spaces on each song, sometimes riding their grooves to intense peaks. Self-recorded and produced, Love It or Leave It sounds sharp, abrupt and raw, and retains an honest, unpolished low-fi aesthetic. Anti-Corn League moves their freewheeling musical adventure forward with Love It or Leave It, expanding the range of their indie-rocking frontiers. On The Rocks, Sadie and Toyz. He conceived the Lost Kingdom project in 2008, with the idea of blending the talents of multiple musicians from a variety of backgrounds to create (according to the CD liner notes) “a true musical colossus…capable of punching you in the gut, making you dance, and singing you a lullaby.” The third and latest album of this project, Lost Kingdom III taps the talents of 18 different musicians (including Buggsy Rock himself on vocals, guitars and bass) over the course of 14 tracks. Because of this variety of musicians, a number of musical styles are represented throughout the album, from classic-styled hard rock/metal to acoustic-geared folk-rock, and flavors in between. Buggsy and William Courson split lead singing duties through much of the album, both displaying strong and flexible voices. Two notable contributors also sing one song each – fellow Bloomsburg rocker and studio collaborator Jonah Whale, who sings and plays drums on the hard-driving “If I Don’t Have You” (which also features former Harpo members John Hahn on guitar and Jack Pyers on bass); and Harpo’s John Kistner delivers his trademark
howl on the metal-geared “UFO.” Hybrid Ice guitarist Rusty Foulke contributes guitar licks on the hard-rocking “World’s On Fire.” Some other highlights include the 90s-leaning “Negative Waves,” which exudes a Stone Temple Pilots/Alice In Chains vibe, Mark Trapane’s classical guitarwork on the mild instrumental “Spanish Romance,” and acoustic and folk-leaning numbers such as the Led Zeppelin-toned “Wishing Well,” the William Courson-Colleen Matyas duet “Forever,” and the album-closing love song “Sherry.” The songs contain catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, and while diverse in flavors, work well together as a cohesive whole album. The contributing musicians all serve the songs well; the vocals are consistently strong from start to end, and the instrumental performances are well executed. Produced by Buggsy Rock and recorded in his own studio, this album sounds clean, balanced and full. Lost Kingdom III delivers a satisfying listen, as Buggsy Rock and his BUGGSY ROCK – LOST KINGDOM III (B. ANTI-CORN LEAGUE – LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT (no label) To answer your immediate question: No, this group has nothing against corn – but derived their name, Anti-Corn League, from a 19th century British political movement, the Anti Corn Law League, that successfully protested and abolished taxes levied on imported cereal grains.
