PA MUSICIAN MAGAZINE 178 ANDY STROUP RD LIVERPOOL, PA 17045 717-636-4203 CALL TODAY FOR INFO OR ADVERTISING DEADLINE THE 20TH OF EACH PRECEDING MONTH.

Welcome back and Happy New Year! 2019 has arrived and we are hustling to bring you an action packed issue of the PA Musician Magazine. I had a great holiday season this year hanging with friends and family, working on a long overdue remodel and eating way too much food. Its seems so easy to stuff your face around the holidays rather than avoid all the tasty foods everyone puts in front of you. With that, comes everyone’s dreaded new years resolutions. Every year I say that I’m going back to my “fighting” weight but it just never seems to happen. Quitting stuff is another big one on people’s lists; smoking and drinking being near the top. I am happy to say that I never took up the cigs but have been known to slam some beers. I have cut back over the last year and overall I feel a lot better day to day. This year I am seriously going to try to lose a couple pounds, keep the drinking under control and try not to be such an Asshole to the people around me. This is perhaps one of my biggest flaws. It’s always easy for me to be a pain in the ass rather than go with the flow and see what happens. So there it is, let’s see if I’m down to 165 by this time next year. Or at least by November so I can rack it all back on again over the holidays. January in PA is the start of a new year of music and there is some exciting stuff happening for everyone. One of the cool things we all got to watch over the holidays was The Small Town Titans going viral with the cover they did last year of “The Grinch”. It’s awesome seeing a local band take off and I’m sure we will be hearing a lot about them this year. They have been working hard and hopefully they continue full steam ahead. The paper seems to be gaining traction with some new advertisers and people contacting me more and more everyday. I read an article about Harrisburg and Central PA being the east coast Austin. It makes you think about how good we do have it Some people say there is a decline, but I would like to think that is over and that the Central PA music scene is on the rise. We have all kinds of options and you don’t have to go far to find what you’re into. With February right around the corner and events happening all over like MMC, The Harrisburg University Concert series, Gettysburg Rocks and the Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival its easy to see what they are talking about. Before February hits, hold on for “Absolutely Freaked” an experiential rock concert featuring the early works of Frank Zappa coming to Open Stage of Harrisburg, January 10th-13th for three nights of shows. Check out the press release following this article to see what it’s all about. If you’re further south and having a hard time getting over the fact that you were lazy on New Year’s Eve and stayed home, then head over to the Racehorse Tavern on January 12th for the 19th Annual Y2K Bash. You can drink some champagne and make some noise and party like its the end of the world all over again. If that wasn’t enough fun, check out our cover band Defiant. They are rocking Johnny Joe’s on the 5th and HMAC on the 25th. Be sure to read the cover story to find out about these guys and put them on your list of must see bands. Speaking of HMAC, we would like to welcome them to our pages. They have teamed up with 717 Entertainment and are featuring The Crash Test Dummies on January 20th. They have a full winter schedule, so check it out here in the pages of the PA Musician Magazine. Another band to go check out is Stephanie and the Wild Hearts

Stephanie & the Wild Hearts

(formerly The Chrome Hearts) photo by Josh Noll (formerly The Chrome Hearts). I got to see them last month and they bring a great energy to the stage that’s hard to come by. With Bob and Stephanie leading the charge, they rope you in and really play to the crowd and it shows. You can catch them at the end of the month at Blarney’s on the 25th and again during the MMC conference in February. Well, that about sums it up but hold on PA, ‘cause 2019 is coming at you like a lion. Don’t be the lamb and remember, life is what you make of it and same goes for your music scene. PRESS RELEASE: ABSOLUTELY FREAKED! Open Stage of Harrisburg and Joseph Osborne Productions invite you to join them for the world premiere of ABSOLUTELY FREAKED - an experiential rock concert featuring the early works of Frank Zappa. Authorized by Zappa Records and with arrangements and music direction by Joseph Osborne and direction by Chris Gibson, this world premiere showcases Frank Zappa’s early works from 1966 to 1972 – including the classic Zappa and the Mother of Invention songs “Plastic People”, “Dirty Love”, “Who Are The Brain Police”, “Going To Montana”, “Brown Shoes Don’t Make It” and more. ABSOLUTELY FREAKED! was conceived and developed to provide audience members with an intimate and fierce experience – filled with art – music, graphic art, visual art and lighting. The concert was also designed and arranged to showcase various performers rather than being a tribute band. ABSOLUTELY FREAKED! features Stacy Werner, T.J. Creedon, Hanni Sindelar, Nicholas Werner, Chris Gibson, T.J. Cole, Anthony Pieruccini, Joseph Osborne and Jeremy Blouch. Graphic and visual designs are by Bri Dow and Rachel Landon. Promotional art by Ryan Spahr and photography by Norman Seef. Zappa’s early works were groundbreaking and integrated various genres into his music - from doo-wop to rock to jazz - while creating songs that featured lyrics that ranged from humorous to eccentric and from provocative to shocking. ABSOLUTELY FREAKED! provides the experimental and experiential vibe of Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, and is a tribute to Zappa’s transformative performances without being a tribute band. Performance dates are January 10, 11, 12 and 13 at 7:30pm. All performances are at Open Stage of Harrisburg, a regional professional performing arts facility located at 25 North Court Street, Harrisburg PA. Ticket prices range from $25 to $35 and can be purchased at https://www.openstagehbg.com/freaked. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks

Happy New Year!!!! The first article of 2019. Thank you all for another amazing year of friendship, support, and most importantly entertainment! I am constantly amazed at the talent in our area. We are truly blessed with all of the bands and venues right here in and around Harrisburg. There is always somewhere to go and someone to see. December was pretty packed with birthdays and family craziness, but I still managed to get out to a few shows. The first big show of the month was another trip down to Racehorse Tavern with my friend Angie for the Francis Crouse Benefit. Francis, the lead singer from Big Jack, was in a horrific motorcycle accident and has been on a super long road to recovery. We were all extremely thankful that not only did he make it to the benefit, but he also got on stage and sang with Problem Child. I’m sure we’ll see him back on the stage rockin’ with Big Jack real soon, but in the meantime, it was nice to see so many friends out supporting a friend in need. The first band I made it for was Shadow Rising. This is Chris Redding’s side project. Shadow Rising is a little calmer than Steel, sticking more with your Classic Rock favorites. They’ve been playing together a while now, I can’t believe it was the first time I got out to see them. They’ve been playing mostly in the southern part of the state, but hopefully they will soon by “rising” more towards Harrisburg. Next was Problem Child. Many of the “older” rockers in the house remember Problem Child, after 20 years of a hiatus they are back with a vengeance and ready to rock! It’s awesome to see and hear that they haven’t missed a beat and picked right up where they left off. Abby has an amazing voice and Problem Child definitely knows how to rock! I’m sure you’ll be seeing them more throughout the area very soon. The last band of the month was Steel. It seems like anytime someone in the area has a benefit, Steel always helps out howev-

Francis Crouse /Racehorse Tavern er they can. I know we greatly appreciated them playing at our benefits. Not only are they amazing musicians, but just amazing people in general, always helping out however they can. Racehorse was packed all night long, and Steel kept it packed til the very last note! Jim and all of the staff at Racehorse also always go above and beyond for anyone in need. Jim is always opening up his stage for benefits, giving promoters, and bands themselves a great place to get together and play for an even greater cause. The following weekend I headed in to Club XL for The River 97.3’s 10th Annual Toys for Tots benefit. First off CONGRATS and THANK YOU to Toys for Tots for hosting this amazing event for 10 years!! The amount of toys and money collected are always amazing. Even when the Marines got up on stage to talk about Toys for Tots, they said they were amazed at the amount and quality of toys donated, someone even donated a bike! The event was a huge success for Toys for Tots and that is what really matters. The bands that perform at the River’s TFT event are always top notch and this night was no different. It all kicked off first with Time Bomb and the SynDCats. I unfortunately missed their sets, but it was awesome to see Michele Kelley and Chris Rider Photography were already there covering the event. To see full coverage and even more pictures, make sure and check out Michele’s article. But now for what I did see… The Martini Bros have rocked almost 10 years of this event, last year Deuce was in a little biking accident, but luckily it was nothing major and didn’t slow these guys down. They were back and rockin’ as they always do. These guys have been playing fewer shows during the year, so you definitely want to catch them every chance you get. It’s hard to believe they’ve been rockin’ our faces off for 25 years! They probably don’t want to admit that, but it is still a pretty amazing! Their music is one of a kind with it’s funky rockabilly coolness. I know I always enjoy it. It was also nice seeing them on a big stage having fun doing what they do. The Jellybricks have also played all 10 years of this event. When you have bands like the Jellybricks that play limited shows it definitely brings out the masses for this special event. Throughout the years they’ve built up quite a following here in Harrisburg and throughout the airwaves. Their songs are very

catchy and have their own special original twist. It’s awesome seeing them playing their songs we all love mixed in with new music. It’s awesome to see them still creating and having a true passion for their music. The Jellybricks shows are also few and far between, make sure and catch ‘em while you can! After the Jellybricks I let Michele and Chris do their thing, oh and Eric Hoffman was there too, and I headed over to Cliff’s for Road Case. Road Case had a great crowd at Cliff’s with people enjoying the good old rock and roll. Now that these guys have quite a few shows under their belt they are definitely just rockin’ all night long! They’ve all played in enough bands for years that they know how to put on a great show and keep their crowd entertained. It was a great way to end the night. Make sure and check out Road Case’s ad in this issue so you can get out there and rock with them soon! The next weekend it was time for another benefit, Spacefest for Eric Dengler, aka Space. Space has undergone some terrifying cancer surgeries and his friends got together and had two nights of Spacefest to help raise money to pay some of the medical bills and take away some of their financial burdens. I made it to the 2nd Spacefest at River City. I was thrilled that I had to park in overflow parking when I got there. The place was packed! Space has played so many benefits for years for so many different people, I was so glad to see such a great turn out for him and his family. The bands of the night were Ebenezer Screw, Penntera, Maiden America and Steel. I made it in time to see Ebenezer Screw rockin’ the stage. It’s been a while since I saw these guys and they never disappoint. The whole night was all about rocking, head banging, and just going crazy, and these guys definitely got the party started. At the very end of their set they also had a super special guest performance by most of the members of Scapegoat. They say get ready, Scapegoat is coming back.. but that is to be continued.. People were very excited to see and hear them on the stage together again. Next up was Penntera. Of course, Space would play his own benefit not only in one, but two bands! The guy is an absolute beast!! This was only the 2nd time I’ve seen Penntera with Jason on vocals and Zack on bass, but I was once again impressed. Pat, Zack, and Jason have an amazing stage presence or should I say off-stage presence for Jason. He literally came flying off the stage one time and almost took me out! If you go to a Penntera show and you’re standing up front, it’s in your best interest to pay attention! The guys are all great musicians and just a blast to continued on page 9...

OUT & ABOUT continued... watch and hear! If you haven’t checked out this new line-up yet, do yourself a favor, check out their ad in this issue and get out there and ROCK with Penntera! No rest for the weary.. the show just kept right on rockin with Maiden America! I love how one their facebook page they have the Maiden America food pyramid: loud guitars, huge drums, and cold beer! That sounds about right, but you also have to add in the amazing vocals of Gordon! Not to mention all of Gordon’s leaps into the crowd and all over the stage. I don’t know how he manages to sing so perfectly while moving around so much, I would be completely winded and probably pass out, but he does it flawlessly. I’m a huge Iron Maiden fan, so I love hearing all of their songs. They really do a great range of all their songs, newer and older. If you are a Maiden fan, trust me when I say you won’t be disappointed if you go see these guys. They really put on a great show! The last band of the night was Steel. The room was just pouring out so much energy, and Steel just keep pouring it right back. I was a little sad to hear some of the songs that Maiden America played because I love how Steel plays them, but Steel didn’t let

The next night I headed out to Ted’s on 22 for Calling Off Doug. I haven’t seen these guys in a while, now I’ve seen them two months in a row! I’m glad they are getting noticed and getting more gigs in the area. They really do deserve it. Stephanie is such an amazing vocalist and can belt out so many of your favorite pop/party songs that keep the booties on the dance floor and have the room singing along! Ted’s room is pretty spread out and it was fun to be able to look around the room and see people dancing along in the front, the back, and everywhere! If you want to see a band that will get you up dancing and having a great time, do yourself a favor and check out Calling Off Doug’s schedule in this issue. You can also give Tim a call and get them booked at your venue! Since Calling Off Doug was done early at Ted’s, I finished off the night at Double K with Ebenezer Screw. Yes, I just saw them at Spacefest, but it was only a little teaser compared to a full show. Double K definitely loves Ebenezer Screw, they always pack the place and this night was no different. Ebenezer Screw makes sure they always put on a great show not only with their music, but with their “show” too! They had “Hired Sound” there doing their sound and lights and it was definitely continued on page 10...

Problem Child/Racehorse Tavern

Clint Lyons of Road Case at Cliff’s it phase them, they have plenty of songs in their arsenal and they were still able to play a great set of music! They really kept the place hopping til the bitter end. I’m glad everyone showed up and made this a great night of music and fun for Space and his family. On a side note: I noticed that “River City” used duct tape to cover up the words on their banner that said “Blues Club”.. this venue is not just for blues, it is for EVERYTHING! It’s awesome to hear and see how River City is supporting all types of music: rock, blues, jazz, original artists, etc. It is just a great little venue for any local bands to play in. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you really should!

OUT & ABOUT continued... a sight to see! Darrin doesn’t mess around, and always puts on an amazing show. If you want to really put on a show at your next event, check out “Hired Sound’s” add in this issue and give Darrin a call. Another side note: Double K might have a buyer. It’s in the infancy stages, so it’s a big we’ll see what happens… so do yourself a favor and get out and see a band at Double K as soon as possible!! Finally, the last show of the month, but it sure was a big one! It was the debut night for the new RATT Tribute band, OUTTA the Cellar, opening for Back in Black at Club XL. Steve and all of the guys from OUTTA the Cellar were promoting like crazy for this show, and you could definitely tell by the venue! OUTTA the Cellar played at 9pm and the place was already packed! They had a great response from the crowd, so I’m sure you will be seeing a lot more of these guys in the upcoming months. I know they already have a few shows lined up. They are all seasoned musicians and have all played and been in this scene for years, so they know what it takes to get the job done, and they are doing it! Thanks for promoting your show in the PA Musician Magazine. We really do appreciate the support! LeadFoot was the next opening band. They are becoming regulars at Club XL opening up for quite a few bands. LeadFoot is a great solid band that plays a variety of your favorite 80s metal songs that knows how to get a party started! They always quickly get everyone paying attention to the stage and dancing and singing along. It was cool to see Ray Geida behind the drums again! It was also cool to see their new guitar player Jason Sparks really moving, dancing and feeling more comfortable on the stage with these guys. It has to be difficult to come in and play with musicians that have been playing together so long, but the whole band does a great job rocking together! The last band of the month is Back in Black. It’s again been way too long since I saw these guys! They are all such amazing musicians and a blast watching. I couldn’t believe with it being the weekend before Christmas and so many shows happening in the area, I really didn’t think they’d have a huge crowd, but Club XL was packed! There were so many familiar faces in the room and it was a blast just rockin with everybody and having a great night of entertainment! Back in Black has been rockin’ stages for 30 years! They are definitely the “True” AC/DC Experience! Even tho they are from Massachusettes that doesn’t stop them from building up their fan base all along the East Coast, and especially here in PA. They’ve been playing shows in PA for 29 years! Anybody have video of them playing 29 years ago? I’d love to see it! Keep an eye out for Back in Black, I’m sure they’ll be passing back through the area soon. I’m so glad people are coming out and supporting Club XL. NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman

Happy New Year Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Last year ended strong with three National shows at Club XL of Harrisburg. The massive new nightclub has really took over the Central PA scene with bands like The Struts, KIX and Reverend Horton Heat. All three events brought huge crowds within the 1500 capacity venue. The Struts (from England) continue to gain ground by touring America non-stop. KIX are quite possibly the most recognized National band in Harrisburg with nearly 40 years of continuous shows within the mid-state. Reverend Horton Heat returned for the 2nd time with his Annual Holiday Show featuring Junior Brown, Big Sandy and The Blasters. Club XL has partnered with Harrisburg University announcing 7 major shows to begin the new year including; Kurt Vile and the Violaters, The Glorious Sons, Marcus King Band, Tig Notaro, Record Company, Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls and Joan Osbourne. Last month also brought two great shows from The Menzingers, originally from Scranton but now residents of Philadelphia. The punk rock band finished their current Fall tour with a soldout show at Union Transfer in Philadelphia. The Menzingers’ concerts are extremely impressive with their loyal following who sing every lyric in unison while fans crowd surf over a mosh pit of mayhem. The Scranton natives also held their charity NEPA Holiday Show in their hometown on December 22nd at the Scranton Cultural Center. Philanthropy is the heart of the show with all proceeds benefitting art and music programs for kids in the Scranton area. “Every year, people reach out to us asking about it earlier and earlier,” said guitarist/singer Tom May. “It’s really become almost an institution on its own.” December included a visit to New York City for one of the best concerts I’ve seen in a long time. Titled “The Bronx White Drugs Holiday Show” which took place at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn. Hardcore punk band The Bronx (from Los Angeles) headlined the show with The Explosion (from Boston) and Wyldlife (Brooklyn). All three bands played incredible unforgettable sets. Wyldlife killed it with fantastic songs “Contraband” and “Bandida.” The Explosion played their hits “Here I Am” and “No Revolution.” And The Bronx finished

blasting thru “Heart Attack American,” “Shitty Future” and “They Will Kill Us All (Without Mercy).” The chaos within the crowd and the immense music of each band proved an intensity that hasn’t been felt in a long time. NATIONAL NEWS: Slayer and KISS and others are having “farewell tours,” Ozzy Osbourne has reiterated that his “No More Tours 2” trek is a bit of a misnomer. “People have gotten that all wrong,” said Osbourne, with it being dubbed a “farewell tour.” “The tour should have been the ‘Ozzy Osbourne Slowing Down’ tour. I’ll still tour, but not as extensively like I have been for the last 50 years.” The singer continued, “I have grandchildren now and I’m 70 years old and I don’t want to be found dead in a hotel room somewhere. I’m going to do it at a more leisurely pace and do some shows in Vegas … but I’ll never stop.” Currently, Osbourne has 46 shows lined up for 2019 with a stop at Hersheypark Stadium on June 8. In 2018, Ed Sheeran had the highest grossing tour ever recorded ($432 million) for an artist in a single year. His “Divide” tour visited four continents, performing 94 concerts for more than 4.8 million fans. The English pop star has astounded the world with the simplicity of his stadium production, the strength continued on page 12...

next year and will have many famous bands with them. Diamond Dave claimed, “The band (Van Halen) is solvent. And I can say that I contacted colleagues about being part of the show - Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Jason Aldean, the Foo Fighters, Church, and Stapleton. And they all said that, if everything happens, they would certainly be involved.” It is also rumored original bassist Michael Anthony will join. If a tour does happen, it would mark the first shows since Sept 1984 featuring all four original members. While Roth has been back with the band since 2007, Anthony was replaced with Eddie Van Halen’s son Wolfgang in 2006. Bret Michaels says that Poison will return in 2020 “with some new songs.” Earlier this past year, Poison completed the “Nothin’ But A Good Time 2018” tour with Cheap Trick and Pop Evil. “There’s never going to be a day when I say, ‘I’m done with Poison,’ Michaels said. “We are still having the time of our lives on stage.” Drummer, Rikki Rockett, acknowledged that part of the reason the band hasn’t been motivated to work on new music has been the fact that fans rarely show interest in hearing fresh material performed live. “We could write the second coming of ‘Talk Dirty To Me’, and I don’t know if people want to hear it or not, and that’s a frustrating thing, it really is.” Poison’s last album of new material was 2002’s “Hollyweird.” Axl Rose of Guns N Roses was recently asked his opinion of the greatest frontman of all time, Rose responded “For me, it’s easy - Queen is the greatest band and Freddie (Mercury) is the greatest frontman of all time. The band are the greatest because they embraced so many different styles.” Guns N Roses recently finished their “Not In This Lifetime” tour that lasted almost three years. They went around the world twice, played to five million people and is projected earnings of $600 million. Three-fifths of the classic GNR lineup reunited in 2016 after last performing together more than two decades earlier. of his connection with the audience and his award-winning music. Sheeran’s tour resumes in 2019 with 45 headlining stadium dates and will become the highest-grossing tour of all time. U2 currently holds the record with their 360 Tour in 2009 with $735 million in sales. The Top 10 tours combined gross revenue surpassed $2 billion. At No. 2 Taylor Swift. Combined with Sheeran, the two racked up $777 million in sales. Pink, Bruno Mars, Jay-Z / Beyoncé, Eagles, Roger Waters, U2, Rolling Stones and Justin Timberlake are also in the Top 10 tours of 2018. Janet Jackson, Stevie Nicks, Def Leppard, Radiohead, The Cure, Roxy Music and the Zombies will all be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 34th induction ceremony we be held March 29 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Jackson’s induction comes after her third time as nominee (since 2007) in which her career suffered from the fallout after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl appearance where her bare breast was briefly exposed. Def Leppard earned more than a half a million votes from fans. Stevie Nicks, Roxy Music and Def Leppard were voted in their first year nominated. Other 2019 nominees who didn’t make the cut included LL Cool J, Devo, Rage Against the Machine, MC5, John Prine, Todd Rundgren and Kraftwerk. Kendrick Lamar is the top contender for the 2019 Grammy Awards with eight nominations, with women heavily represented in the major four categories. Lamar’s music contribution to the movie Black Panther has seven nominations including album of the year. Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monae, H.E.R. and Brandi Carlile are also up for the top prize, along with Drake and Post Malone. The “Panther” nomination will give Lamar a chance to win album of the year after losing three times. Some acts scored their first nominations ever, including Florida Georgia Line, Camila Cabello, Post Malone and Shawn Mendes. Lamar has won 12 Grammys throughout his career. The 2019 Grammys will hand out awards in its 84 categories live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10. David Lee Roth may have leaked a Van Halen reunion this coming year in a recent interview with Vulture magazine. The VH frontman said he and the band will play Yankees Stadium

HITTING THE ROAD By Michele Kelley

Happy New Year to all of you! I hope you all had a peaceful holiday season. 2018 was a great year for us musically and I am very excited to see what 2019 has in store for us. We have already been notified of some big-name bands coming to our area. Club XL in Harrisburg has already released their Spring Concert Series line-up. They have teamed up with Harrisburg University and there will be some mind-blowing music happening in the ‘burg. Also, we have been invited back to cover some awesome bands at Spyglass Ridge Winery in Sunbury as well. I can’t spoil their news yet, as some of the bands are still in the works, but stay tuned for some big acts coming your way. We are even more excited to see what is happening with the local music scene. I have a feeling some of the local bands we have covered in 2018 are going to explode in 2019. It’s a very exciting thing to witness. PA is very blessed to have such amazing talent here. Thank you all for allowing us to be part of this adventure. We got out to see a lot of bands last month and Josh promised to get them all in this issue, so I should move on to that. December started off incredibly busy for us and didn’t let up the entire month. December 1st we attended a benefit concert for Toys for Tots sponsored by The River 97.3 and Club XL in Harrisburg. Wow, what a fun night this was! They brought in over $2,000 and collected 7 overflowing boxes of toys in just a few hours! Great job Harrisburg! You definitely helped kids have a great Christmas! The music started off with special guest DJ Heidi. Next was a group called Time Bomb. This was my first time hearing of them and they were very entertaining to watch. Time Bomb formed in 2015 and they’re an 80’s Metal cover band. It was apparent how their name came to be as they played some great covers that took me on a trip back to the 80’s rock and roll. The band consists of Dave Grim:

Lead Vocals/Guitar, Brian Gates: Lead Guitar/Vocals, Todd Williams: Bass/Vocals, Randy Groff: Drums/Vocals. The SynD’Cats played next. This was a reunion show for this old-school, rock’n roll band. The band played in the Harrisburg area in the early to mid 1990’s. They wasted no time grabbing the audiences attention with their raw, fi-

ery rhythm. Members include Dave Venet: Vocals, Steve Nelson: Guitar, Terry White: Guitar, Ryan Sohmer: Drums and Mark Brown: Bass. The Martini Bros. hit the stage next. I had a chance to see them a few years back and remember being really impressed by them. Founded in 1992 by Deuce Gibb, this York-based band has been putting a classy spin on Retro-Rockabilly. Since 1995, they have released one single, four albums and seven videos and they show no signs of slowing down. They

had the crowd up dancing and having a great time. The next band is at the top of my list of local bands to see. The Jellybricks always put on a dynamic, feel-good performance that never disappoints. These guys are always smiling on stage and it’s infectious. For 22 years, this Harrisburg band has been performing Indie/Rock music and entertaining fans all

them. Their music is classified as Hard Rock but they are so versatile that they can pretty much cover and pull off anything from gritty rock to beautiful ballads. Albums include a self-titled album released in 2012. In 2013 they released ‘From Flight to Flight’. In 2016 they released ‘Reflection’ and the newest EP, ‘The Small Town Titans Hybrid Sessions’ was released in 2018. The latest EP includes 6 songs recorded last summer and 2 new originals never released. To find more information on them and read their story, go to www.smalltowntitans.com/epk That same evening, we headed to Selinsgrove to The Isle of Que Brewing Company to check out a band that I have wanted to see, Prairie Dogma. It was a perfect way to end an evening. These guys put out a warm-mellow groove that is appealing to the audience. Together since 2015, they definitely charm their audience with humor. Members include Michael Lundy: Vocals, Guitar, Banjo and Mandolin, Dave Jackson: Percussion/Vocals,

The Martini Bros. over the U.S. The band consists of Larry Kennedy: Guitar/Vocals, Bryce Conner: Guitar/Vocals, Garrick Chow: Bass/Vocals and Tom Kristich: Drums/Vocals. It is always a pleasure seeing these guys on stage. The Famous closed out the evening at Club XL. This Harrisburg based band has been together for over 3 years and perform covers songs from the 70’s and 80’s. Members include Joey Dalto: Lead Vocals/Guitar, Steve Nelson: Lead Guitar/Vocals, Michael Romig: Bass/Vocals, Erik Avakian: Keyboard/Vocals,

Time Bomb The Famous Trent Sprinkle: Drums/Vocals and Shelby Nelson: Vocals. The band showed their dynamic talent of weaving genres together and putting on a top-notch show. Their song selection and appearance was brilliantly selected for the time frame they covered.

On December 15th we went to see Small Town Titans at Ye Old Meeting Place in Milton. STT have been around the area since 2011. This York band includes Phillip Freeman: Vocals/ Bass/Harmonica, Ben Guiles: Guitar/Vocals and Jonny Ross: Drums/Vocals. Many may have heard them re-release their version of “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch” that they originally recorded over a year and a half ago. The song took off again in 2018 and pushed the YouTube video over 32 million views. I have seen these guys play a few times and they never disappoint. They are such an impressive group of musicians. Their shows are high energy and they play for their fans, not just to

Prairie Dogma Bruce Barr: Guitar/Vocals and Geoff Schneider: Bass/Vocals. Along with some great originals, they cover songs from The Grateful Dead, Talking Heads, Al Green, Bob Dylan and many more. They are in the process of recording an album which I was lucky enough to get a demo of. It is rather good and can’t wait to see what they produce as a final copy. Check them out on Facebook or go to their website at www.prairiedogma.net The following day we drove north to catch The 5th Annual Winter Blues Bash at Trout Run Hotel in Trout Run. This event was created to raise money for the winners of the Billtown Blues Association Challenge to travel to Memphis TN to participate in the International Blues Challenge (IBC). First on the bill was the 2018 Billtown Blues Challenge winner of the Solo/Duo category, Chris LaRose. He is originally from Lock

Haven and is a self-employed musician that plays Guitar, Harmonica, Banjo and Vocals. His music ranges from Blues to 50’s Rockabilly to soulful acoustic originals. He has played several shows with Grammy Award Winner, Joanne Shenandoah both in America and Europe. He recently returned to the states from playing venues in Germany and back packing his

way through Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic. Since his return home, he has been playing the local music scene and promoting his current original album ‘Switchblade Blues’. I was really impressed by his performance and have never witnessed continued on page 15...

anyone playing the blues on a banjo before. He is definitely a must see! To read more about Chris and to purchase his album, go to www.chrislarosemusic.com Next up was The Dirty Mojo Blues Band. They are a Williamsport-based blues band with strong rock, funk, and soul influences. They formed in 2009 by Shawn Strickland and his father, Gary Strickland. Current members include Shawn Strickland: Vocals/Harmonica, Gary Strickland: Guitar/Vocals, Al Meck: Guitar, Chris Carithers: Guitar, Tim Reinhard: Bass and Mark Peterson: Drums. Shawn is a Seydel Harmonica endorsee and has competed solo at the 2012 IBC in Memphis, representing the Billtown Blues Association. Shawn has a very unique grit to his voice that stands out and once heard will never be forgotten. Shawn also competed in the 2013 IBC, representing the Natchel Blues Network. He returned in 2015 as a duo with his father Gary, representing the Natchel Blues Network. To hear some funky blues, check out their Facebook page or go to www. reverbnation.com/dirtymojo The Becky Blue Band was the next performance. From Central PA, they are a Rock and Blues Band. Becky mixes in some cigar box that gives the songs a whole new sound. She has a strong and striking voice Dirty Mojo that mixes well with the instruBlues Band ments played. Members are Dan Montville: Guitar, Justin Aurand: Keys, Carolyn Gatty: Drums, Scott Myers: Bass and Becky Blue: Vocals/Cigar box. They recently released an EP ‘South of Florence’ recorded in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and are working on several projects including their first LP to be

band. Duke St. Dairy also includes her first original song performed in Spanish, ‘No Me toques mas asi’, which in English means ‘Do not touch me anymore’. It is a very powerful song that shows her passion yet resonates. The album also features songs by Ann Rabson and EG Kight. I picked up this CD years ago and it is one I still never get tired of hearing. The Blues foundation honored Ann and her band by naming The Anne this CD as ‘2010’s SemifinalKerstetter Band ist for Best self-produced CD’. For more information on the band, future shows or to purchase music, go to their website at www.annkerstatter.com or find them on Facebook. The music did not stop there though. After we left, Gabe Stillman along with Stacia Abernatha, were playing next. Gabe is the lead in The Gabe Stillman Band that won the band category for the 2018 Billtown Blues Challenge. You may recall us covering The Gabe Stillman Band in our article of the December issue of the magazine. We also covered Stacia in our article of the October issue. Both Stacia and Gabe are stellar musicians and are must sees. We sadly missed The Cadillac Cats, who were also in our article of the October issue (and faithful advertisers of the magazine I might add. Thank you again for your support of the magazine). If you missed the paper copies of these musicians, I encourage you all to read the magazines digital issues online. These guys are all notable musicians and deserve to be recognized. We will definitely be back to catch some more of their shows in the near future. The final band to play that evening was Miz Ida & the Allnightas. They are a Williamsport band and this was sadly their final performance together after playing the Blues for 10 years. Members of the band were Cheryl ‘Miz Ida’ Miller: Vocals, Lori Smith: Guitar, Dave Krempasky: Bass and Roy Pursel: Drums. From the videos posted on Facebook, it appears we missed out on one heck of a performance. We wish you all the best in the next chapter of your lives. I am sure we will see you all out supporting the great music that north central PA has to offer. We were contacted by a friend that plays with the band SINK IN. They have been touring the U.S. and he informed us they were playing a show in Lancaster on December 22nd so we took a trip down to Tellus360. We have never been to this venue be-

released in the near future. Following some stellar performances was the acoustic trio, Mystery Trayne. This Williamsport band added a unique mix of harmonious smooth blues, twang and swing along with a washboard that set their sound apart from the rest of the bands playing. This band consists of Cheryl ‘Miz Ida’ Miller: Vocals/ Washboard, Jay ‘Bone’ Short: Guitar and Jack ‘J.C.’ Reed: Upright Bass. Jay and Cheryl have been fixtures in the area blues scene for decades. Jack is a multi-instrumentalist is a songwriter and recording engineer. They produce a polished sound that is timeless. The Ann Kerstetter Band was our last band to see for the evening. It had been a long day of great music and we had a lot of road to cover before we reached home. This Northumberland band was truly

bers include Andrew Benner: Vocals, Nate Longenecker: Synths, Dwight Sensenig: Drums, and Levi Schlosser. Their first EP ‘You Can’t Have Everything’ was released before they played any shows. They released 2 singles in 2017, ‘Change you Mind’ and ‘Charminar’. They are set to release their 2nd 5-song EP later this winter/ early spring. Check out their Tiger & Instagram or Facebook page to follow along for upcoming Thieves news on a release date. With that, 2018 is a wrap. We are looking forward to 2019 and covering some new bands checking out some new venues around the area. If you see us at a show, stop and say hello. Also, remember that advertising is available and pricing is really inexpensive. Check out the magazines website at www.pamusician.net and contact Josh for any help you may need to get you started.

exciting watch and was so much fun. Their style is a mix of Blues, Classic Rock and Americana. Ann’s voice is described as a mix of Etta James and Janis Joplin and I would say that is spot on. The members include Ann Kerstetter: Vocals, Bryan Noaker: Guitar, Bill Stetz: Bass and Jack Lawton: Drums. Ann is now in my top 10 of best local female performers to see. It wasn’t just her voice, although her voice is incredible, it was her stage presence. She is so animated, funny and has crazy energy on stage. Bryan’s guitar playing second to none and his slide work is phenomenal. Ann has released 2 albums over the years. Her debut album ‘Classics’ and follow up album “Duke St. Dairy” that features 11 cuts including 9 original songs by Ann and her

I really enjoyed hearing him play and look forward to seeing what he makes of this in the future. Following Devix was Astro Lasso. They are a two piece Indie/ Pop band also from York. Jordan Davis and Tristan Martin make up this new project and they are already getting a lot of attention. Jordan and Tristan were formally in the band Kingsfoil. Astro Lasso puts on a striking show with a full band sound. Look for them on Facebook for upcoming shows. Next to take the stage was SINK IN. They are a high energy Pop/Rock band originated in Los Angeles with 2 of the members being from Hershey. Members include Tighe Eshleman: Vocals, Cobrette Bardole: Guitar, Josh Lamczyk: Guitar and Stefano Pigliapoco: Drums/Vocals. SINK IN kicked off in 2015 by recording their debut EP ‘Wide Eyes’. With great response to the EP, they set off on a full US touring schedule. They have shared the stage with artists such as: Relient K, Skillet, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Emery, Icon for Hire, and many more! In 2016, they released a single called ‘Castaway’, which amassed over half a million views on YouTube. SINK IN entered the studio again in the winter of 2016 to record their first full-length album entitled ‘Ordinary People, Extraordinary Things’. It has been really cool to watch this band grow on stage over the last couple years. They have a lot of fun performing and interact really well with their audience. Check them out on Facebook more information on tour dates and merchandise or visit them at www.sinkinband. com Tigers and Thieves was the headliner of the night. They have done a really good job with setting up the stages and keeping the sound contained to those areas. Very cool place that we will go back to in the future. There were several bands playing that evening at Tellus360. First on stage was Devix. Devix was created by Eric Torres and was intended to be a high school project piece but remained a solo looping act out of York. Eric is originally

from Queens, NY and later moved to Greenville, NC. 13 years ago he landed in PA and has been creating music ever since. He started playing guitar 17 years ago and didn’t start singing until

We open the book to a new chapter, New Year 2019. Here is hoping that all of our readers experience happiness and prosperity in the next twelve months! Although live music generally tends to slow down during the holiday period, both the Thanksgiving and early Christmas seasons have provided some recent music event highlights. A big highlight during Thanksgiving weekend was the reunion of popular early 1990s-era rockers Heaven Tonite at one of the region’s newest live music venues, 120 Pub & Grub in Clearfield. After a 25-year hiatus, the reuniting roster of lead singer/guitarist Scott Robleski, lead guitarist/singer Matt Day, bassist/singer Steve Leach, keyboardist/singer Gary Bailey and drummer Jamie McGarvey reprised their popular blend of classic and arena rock favorites over two nights. During the Friday night performance, Heaven Tonite performed classics from REO Speedwagon, Boston, Kansas, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Journey, Queen, Prince, Heart, Pink Floyd, Rush, Led Zeppelin and more. Despite the lengthy hiatus and minimal rehearsal time beforehand, Heaven Tonite sounded tight and on target for most of the night. Scott again demonstrated his high-soaring pipes early and often, especially on Journey numbers like “Stone in Love,” “Separate Ways” and “Any Way You Want It,” as well as Heart’s “Barracuda.” And likewise, Matt displayed his technical prowess on the guitar strings. And as Heaven Tonite did orchestrate a Queen tribute as part of their prior run on area stages, several Queen classics were in the mix this night – including a spot-on rendering of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” as well as “Tie Your Mother Down,” “Fat-Bottomed Girls” and the night-ending encore rendition of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Local Clearfield acoustic favorite Brandon Giuffre opened the night. The Saturday night leg of Heaven Tonite’s reunion weekend became a benefit event, with proceeds going toward a scholarship fund established in memory of Matt’s father, Bob E. Day. (A popular Clearfield area radio personality whose career spanned more than 50 years, Bob passed in October.) Altoona favorites Shallow 9 hailed in the Thanksgiving holiday with their Thanksgiving Eve dance party blowout at McGarvey’s. This group continues to raise the bar on their onstage excitement, from their vibrant mixture of rock, pop, dance and hip-hop favorites to dazzling lights, sound and stage production orchestrated by drummer Todd Harshbarger. Shallow 9 has evolved a triple-edged vocal presence, with singer Erika Marino now sharing and swapping lead singing and rapping duties with Mike Stanley, with guitarist Ryan Weaver also singing lead on several numbers. Ryan and Tucker Landis provide the group’s guitar edge, with drummer Todd and bassist Mitch Neuder anchoring the rhythm section. This night, Shallow 9 kept the dance floor busy and turbulent with favorites from Lit, Panic! at the Disco, Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Outkast and many more. Several times the group broke into freewheeling medleys – stringing together numbers from House Of Pain, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Eminem, Cypress Hill and more into an old-school hip-hop medley; and merging tunes from Sir Mix-a-Lot, Ohio Players, Kool & the Gang, K.C. & the Sunshine Band and others into a funky medley later on. The energy was constant and the musical flavors continually twisted and turned, resulting in an exciting show from start to end. McGarvey’s kept with their Thanksgiving weekend tradition in recent years by presenting the return of nationally-renowned funnyman Don Jamieson of VH-1 Classic’s “That Metal Show” fame, anchoring a three-band, one-comedian post-Thanksgiving bash. Work duties prevented me from seeing the evening’s first two bands, Pittsburgh’s Dragline and northern Cambria County rockers Negan; but Don Jamieson was just under way with his presentation as I entered the building. Don immediately generated laughs about everything from Motorhead’s Lemmy and AC/DC to marijuana to the President to Nickelback to Canada, Mexico, masturbation and more. Don also added visuals since last year’s monologue, showing two slideshows, “You Know You’re a Metalhead if...” and “Metal Myths.” Naildriver then slammed the lid on the night with explosive power metal, mixing old favorites and new tunes. All five members – lead snarler Matt Watson, the guitar battery of Scott Botteicher and Gregg McCloskey, drummer Luke McCloskey and new bassist Kevin continued on page 17...

Bem – scorched oxides off the walls with newer tunes like “Refocused,” “Eyes to the Sky,” “The Ghost of Me” and “Sinking Ship,” as well as reliable anthems like “Enemy,” “Executioner,” “Seal the Exits,” their torrid cover of Iron Maiden’s “Trooper,” and “Hypocrite’s Anthem” for the night’s encore. Naildriver was suitably ferocious, with Matt bristling all-out rage on the vocals, Scott searing out precision lead guitar solos, and Gregg, Kevin and Luke levying furious mayhem on their respective instruments. I eventually caught up with Negan a few weeks later as they closed out another heavy-rocking triple-bill at McGarvey’s. Pittsburgh’s The Filthy Lowdown and Skell awakened the crowd with their respective brands of scorching rock before my arrival; Negan then thundered out their mix of original songs and hard rock/metal favorites to close the night. Singer Mike Davis, guitarists Bob Gray and Jeremy Ashurst (confined to a chair this night due to medical issues), bassist Josh Yahner and drummer Ben Frick hammered out some new original tunes from their forthcoming second recording due out early this year, along with numbers off their Burnt Pages debut EP such as “Where Do We Go From Here,” “We,” “Obsolete” and “The Devil’s Coming.” They also performed numbers from Chevelle, Tool, Nirvana, Ghost, Danzig and White Zombie; as well as resurrecting Monster Magnet’s “Space Lord” and firing up Iron Maiden’s “Two Minutes to Midnight” toward the end of their set. Negan experienced a breakout year on the area music scene in 2018; if you haven’t done so yet, see them ASAP in 2019! Another recent highlight was a special edition of the monthly Blues Gathering at Johnstown’s Venue Of Merging Arts (VOMA) early last month, where the Jimmy Adler & Charlie Barath Blues Band lit up the house with their tasty mix of blues flavors. Jimmy on guitar and vocals, Charlie on lead vocals and harmonica, David Traugh on doghouse bass and Gordon Grottenthaler on drums celebrated music from the early blues masters, as well as performing original songs from both Jimmy’s and Charlie’s respective catalogs. The musical fireworks were amazing; Jimmy made his guitar strings sing with a combination of tasteful solos, licks and scorching slide guitar work, while Charlie exuded finesse on his harp – ranging from freewheel-

ing wild wails to dynamic silence to long-held single-note displays. Before a packed house, the group broke out numbers from Sonny Boy Williamson, Ike Turner, Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, Louis Jordan and more. Some of the many highlights included the group’s take on Amos Milburn’s “Bad Bad Whiskey,” Louis Jordan’s “Knock Me a Kiss,” the much-requested rendition of Jimmy’s “Midnight Rooster” (his guitar fireworks here dropped jaws in amazement) and – for the encore – Jerry McCain/Fabulous Thunderbirds’ “She’s Tough.” The music was great, as was the fun vibe of the crowd and the atmosphere of VOMA itself – simply put, this is a great venue to experience live music. VOMA’s next Blues Gathering, featuring local blues crafters Black Cat Moan – happens on January 26. Afterward, I chased that blues performance by heading to the Windber Hotel to catch more blues and blue-rock via the latter portion of the Angry Johnny Stangry Band’s performance. Singing and wielding guitar, namesake “Angry” Johnny Stangry was assisted by the Grinning Mob rhythm section of bassist Brad Rhea and drummer Scotty Mina. They fired up a variety of classic rock, blues-rock and more from such artists as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, Prince and others. Johnny displayed electrifying guitar work throughout – his solo display on “The Sky Is Crying” was a jaw-dropper! The group also did versions of the Dead’s “Shakedown Street,” Johnny Otis/Eric Clapton’s “Willie and the Hand Jive,” Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” Ben Harper’s “Steal My Kisses,” Nick Lowe/ Elvis Costello’s “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding” and the night-ending version of Prince “Purple Rain.” The Angry Johnny Stangry Band gave a smoking, airtight performance this night; Johnny returns to the Windber Hotel on Jan. 26. An early Christmas season highlight last month happened at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society, as Fortune & Glory provided the rock’n’roll during the traditional annual visit of Krampus and St. Nicholas. According to Bavarian (and other European) tradition, St. Nicholas hands out gifts to good children, while the horned, fanged and demon-like Krampus punishes naughty children by swatting them with a birch branch. This night, Krampus didn’t seem to be in the swatting spirit; instead, he was pacified as he air-jammed to his entrance

The Angry Johnny Stangry Band music, Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast,” as it blared over the sound system. Before and after the visitation, Fortune & Glory – Dana Martino on lead vocals, hubby Art Martino on guitar, son Nicholas Martino on bass and Bryan Starr on drums – rocked the house with a variety, doing numbers from CCR, the Rascals, Deep Blue Something, Melissa Etheridge, Janis Joplin, Scandal, Joe Walsh, Ben E. King, Whitesnake, Jackyl, George Harrison, Great White, 3 Doors Down, Led Zeppelin and more. The mood was festive and happy throughout the evening, as Fortune & Glory kept things cordial and lighthearted. It had been a while since I last saw Pottsville rockers Gas Station Disco in action; when I caught up with them last month at The Arena in State College, I discovered that their roster was completely overhauled since the last time I saw them. The current edition now features singer Mike Welten, guitarist Chris Bowers, bassist Tyler Brown and drummer Ryan Seritti. Gas Station Disco still generates the musical excitement; this night presenting their blend of mostly modern rock, dance and pop favorites. The group broke out tunes from 3 Doors Down, Lit, Jimmy Eat World, Maroon 5, Panic! at the Disco and more. Some highlights included a hard-hitting, crunchy take on Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin,’” and toward night’s end, a mash-up of Buckcherry’s “Crazy Bitch” into Kool & the Gang’s “Jungle Boogie,” with Mike brandishing a trumpet. Gas Station Disco’s execution continued on page 18..

THE PROFESSOR continued..... was tight, and their vocals and harmonies were on target. The result was increasing numbers of folks on the floor and dancing as the night proceeded, and a good time. Gas Station Disco continues to bring their party to points throughout the Northeast; their January schedule has shows in PA, Ohio, Indiana and Virginia, and they gig in Alaska next month! If you like great coffee with your live music, Altoona’s Greenbean Coffeehouse presents their Open Stage Night every Thursday evening starting at 6 p.m. It took me a while to get an Open Stage Night due to my work schedule, but I finally checked it out for my first time last month. I picked a good night, as this edition featured a lot of variety! The highlighted performer of the evening was Daniel Weber; armed with button accordion, Daniel opened the night with a full set of Christmas season favorites. The audience sang along as Daniel played renditions of “Away in a Manger,” “Deck the Halls,” “Jingle Bells,” “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Winter Wonderland,” “White Christmas,” “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth,” “Santa Baby,” a request for “Frosty the Snowman,” “Silent Night” and many more. Rochelle Gardner followed with a few Christmas favorites performed on flute and sung a cappella. Michelle Barnes then sang and strummed guitar on Chris Isaak’s “Wicked

Game” and two other songs, before her daughter Shannon joined her to sing versions of Joan Baez’s “Diamonds and Rust,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon” and Smashing Pumpkins’ “Disarm.” Kris Reiter then set up her keyboard and did three intriguing songs, including a number from Polar Express, her Steely Dantoned original song “Meant to Be” and the jazz/show tune “Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered.” Next was a surprise, as Matt Evans arrived in the building with bagpipes and piped out three numbers; including a Scottish medley, “Bloody Fields of Flanders/Cock O’ the North” and “Lexie MacAskill.” Armed with electric guitar, Karl Rieger followed with a version of “Sleigh Ride,” a Ramones medley, a take on Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen” and more. Matt Stumpf then did his public comedy debut, and did a good job, inspiring some laughter from the audience. Guitarist Kevin Gallopin then demonstrated his composition and fingerstyle skills on three acoustic numbers, before another comedian, Shane, brought more levity to the Open Stage audience. Stage emcee Garrison Bailey then belted out a version of Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive,” before she then backed the band Wilted on drums as they closed out Open Stage Night with some original tunes and a version of the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Dani California.” The variety of talent here was all good, and the mood was cordial and receptive to all of the performers. And Greenbean’s coffee is fine as well – I recommend the mocha! I also finally caught my first look at Last Stand early last month at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub. Rick Wertz plays acoustic guitar, Randy Rutherford plays electric guitar, and Will Jones plays percussion; all three sing. Last Stand performs an eclectic mixture of classic rock, pop, folk and other favorites. I enjoyed their selection this night; they picked out hits and forgotten gems from Emerson Lake & Palmer, John Prine, Soul Asylum, James Taylor, Elton John, the Beatles, Jimmy Buffett, R.E.M., CCR, Grateful Dead, Bob Seger, Crosby Stills & Nash, Garth Brooks, Eagles, Green Day, Zac Brown Band and more. As they performed their two sets, Last Stand welcomed a few guests, including the Walkney contingent of Derek Mrdjenovich and Rogan Allen, plus Rue Moyer to sing and play guitar on Bill Withers’ “Use Me.” I also saw singer and guitarist Andy Lubert as he entertained early last month at the Mosscreek Bar & Grill near Northern Cambria. Performing to an audience of bar patrons, Andy played a wide mixture of classics from such names as U2, Neil Young, Johnny Cash, the Beatles, Bon Jovi, Deep Blue Something, Blind Melon, Bob Dylan, Goo Goo Dolls and more. Some of his diverse song list included Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away,” Tonic’s “If You Could Only See,” J. Frank Wilson/Pearl Jam’s “Last Kiss,” The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven,” Semisonic’s “Closing Time” and more. Andy’s voice was in fine form, and he invested himself into each tune, asking musical trivia questions about the songs along the way. Andy Lubert regularly performs at venues and events throughout west-central Pennsylvania. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Felix & the Hurricanes performing on stage. This group still plays a busy show schedule, and reliably continues to close out each weekend with their weekly Sunday night session at Altoona’s Black & Gold Tavern. In 30 years, this group has built a large arsenal of music, and made a lot of musical friends – “honorary Hurricanes” – along the way. So no two Sunday nights at the Black & Gold are ever the same, as the Hurricanes can tap different songs from

country favorites, and generated dancing and laughter along the way. Highlights were many, including the group’s vocal harmonies on Chris Stapleton’s “Tennessee Whiskey,” Chuck fronting the group on Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” Pat and Chuck swapping bass and guitar for several songs during the last set, and Pat and Felix blending guitar talents on Little Feat’s “Willin.’” Felix & the Hurricanes keep it loose, unpredictable and fun; ringleader Felix can shift the musical direction on a dime, and the group keeps it lighthearted, with humor helping to keep things happy and upbeat. After 30 years, this group shows little sign of slowing down anytime soon; catch Felix & the Hurricanes as they play around the region, and Sundays at the Black & Gold. The area music scene was saddened in recent weeks by the

passing of several members…Dave Vernot, former drummer for Indiana blues rockers The Jukehouse Bombers, passed away unexpectedly on November 27 at age 52…John Shaffer, longtime Johnstown area singer and performer, passed away on December 8, after an illness. John was 64. John had sung and performed in numerous bands, including Who’s Your Daddy and Johnny & the Blues Rockers. John is survived by a wife and son…And Altoona area musician and artist Mike Long passed away unexpectedly on December 16 at age 46. Mike was a musician, but also had a passion for art in many forms. He was known for creating chainsaw art at area festivals, and did paintings and drawings as well. We express our sincerest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of all three men. News and notes…Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats have issued their fifth CD, a 23-track self-titled album mixing new songs with live and updated versions of previous popular tracks…Eric Ian Farmer has issued his new album, Journey of a Love So Strong (Live), an album recorded live at State College’s State Theatre, which can be purchased at the State Theatre or at Eric’s live shows…Indiana County rockers Post Traumatik have completed recording their debut CD, Anger Management; the album is slated for an April release… Johnstown-based blues group Black Cat Moan is at work recording their new CD; the recording is taking place at Data Music Services in Altoona, and the new CD should be available sometime early this year… Blair County-based heavy metal rockers Klockwick have announced they are parting ways after a six-year run on area stages…Big thanks and kudos to Deanna Trio-Schompert, Mo Yon, Dylan Miller and Zac Grace, who help me deliver PA Musician to Johnstown, Bedford and Huntingdon County locations every month. PA CD REVIEWS By Jim Price

BO MOORE & FRIENDS – A JOHNSTOWN CHRISTMAS – VOLUME II (no label) Following the success of the first A Johnstown Christmas compilation CD last holiday season, organizers Bo Moore and Chip Minemeyer have come up with the first sequel. A Johnstown Christmas – Volume II compiles 20 Christmas season songs from the Johnstown area and community, blending renditions of time-tested holiday season favorites and original Christmas song compositions, and spanning a multitude of musical flavors. Like the initial album, proceeds from sales of this CD go toward the Johnstown Tribune-Democrat newspaper’s Santa Fund, which provides gifts to more than 1,000 area children in need during the holiday season. Another similarity between albums is that former NBC-TV The Voice finalist Josh Gallagher has donated another Christmas song to this album as well, this year performing a folksy and solemn rendition of “Away in a Manger.” Other returning performers on this season’s compilation include Walt and Jackie – the duo of Walt Churchey and Jackie Kopco – with their 2013 song of homecoming hope for loved ones serving in the military, “Another Christmas.” The Mutual FUN Society also returns with their playful and tonguein-cheek “A Question for Santa,” and ‘host’ and organizer Bo Moore appears with his Moore Brothers on two songs – “Santa Stuck on 219 Blues” (anyone who has driven on Route 219 during the winter season can relate to this) with Ken Deater, and “A Cold December Night” with guest Tony Arcuri. Jazz In Your Face returns with “Comfort and Joy,” their boisterous take on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.” Other highlights include Smooth Sound’s jazzy, soulful and tasty “Holiday Wish-

es,” Ribbon Grass singer Terri O’Leary’s tranquil rendition of “O Holy Night,” the child-generated “Jingle” from Inclined To Sing, Children’s Choruses of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Somerset County bluegrass artist Cindy G’s uplifting “Raise Your Voices,” Dylin Snedden’s witty “Santa, Please Send Me Cash,” and Michael James Facciani’s powerful and operatic voice on the album closer, “Ave Maria,” plus contributions from Johnny Bayush (also the album’s digital engineer), Her Harmony, Kim King, Oakland United Methodist Church Praise Band, Crucified Worship, Johnstown Symphony Youth Orchestra, Ava Zucco and Community Strings of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra. This album is nicely arranged, with joyful and playful numbers juxtaposed with tranquil, solemn and more orchestrated numbers. And with its even wider range of contributions from throughout the Johnstown musical community, Volume II feels more like an entire community effort. A Johnstown Christmas – Volume II is a delightful listen from start to finish, and easily makes for pleasant listening while trimming the tree, hanging the Christmas lights or opening gifts on Christmas morning. And it benefits a great cause. (The CD can be obtained at the Tribune-Democrat offices and BottleWorks Ethnic Arts Center in Johnstown, or online at www.tribdem.com.) JEFF FETTERMAN – 9 MILES TO NOWHERE (no label) Erie’s Jeff Fetterman first took interest in music at age 5 after watching Jimi Hendrix play guitar on TV. Although he first wanted to play drums, his parents’ resistance steered him toward the guitar. The guitar has served Jeff and his self-named band well; they have opened for touring national acts, won Best Blues Band and Best Blues Album honors at the 2017 Rock Erie Music Awards, and became semi-finalists in the 2018 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Listening to Jeff’s latest album, 9 Miles to Nowhere, quickly shows why Jeff has risen in the blues-rock ranks. Jeff channels Texas blues and southern rock flavors into ten smoldering tracks. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Kenny Wayne Shepherd inform Jeff’s blues-

rock swagger throughout the album, as he delivers blistering guitar work and a commanding vocal growl hinting at the late Danny Joe Brown (of Molly Hatchet fame). Flanking Jeff are his bandmates Ralph Reitinger III on bass and John McGuire on drums, plus guitarist Eric Brewer and backing singer/percussionist Judy Kessler. The songs are infectious, and follow familiar blues themes of love gone awry, hard living and dying, and evil around the bend. Jeff seeks a medic to cure his relationship anxieties on the hard-rocking, disc-opening shuffle “Somebody Get Me a Doctor,” and he expresses frustration on the funk-tinged “Something Just Ain’t Right.” Jeff outruns evil on the dark and swamp-toned “Devil Knockin’ at My Door,” and lays down a tough, swaggering groove on “Early Grave.” Jeff showcases his guitar prowess on the slow burner “Brand New Day” and the slow blues of “Broken Hearted,” and generates some heated boogie on “Lover Man” and “Bad Feeling.” Jeff ends the album in a milder vein, via the doo-wop-flavored blues of “These Arms of Mine.” The performances are driven and inspired, as Jeff and his colleagues sink heart and intensity into their presentation. Recorded, mixed and mastered at GCR Audio in Buffalo, New York, and produced and engineered by Brad Lauchert, 9 Miles to Nowhere sounds full, balanced and tough, as Jeff and his band show their edge and swagger. This album shows that Jeff Fetterman is a blues-rocking force to be reckoned with; 9 Miles to Nowhere offers no-nonsense, full-throttled blues rock that deserves to be played loud and proud. (The CD can be obtained through Jeff Fetterman’s website, www.jefffetterman.com.)
