Well I can tell you that central PA that came out of 2020 is Baby Yoda or Grogu as he is now is loaded with awesome music shops. Guitars on George called. Live music has been hanging on by a thread and in York has a great collection of guitars and amps. Jerry the venues and bars that support it have been struggling Duncan has brought some of his personal collection out of too. With the “second wave” of the virus taking hold of the storage, to offer to the masses. If you’re looking for that country it’s hard to say what 2021 will bring. The rules talking to Jerry. Another place that has been around for as long as I can and regulations make no sense that have been imposed on bars and restaurants. The fact that no one could socialize remember is Player’s Exchange down in Lemoyne. Scott after 5pm on Thanksgiving eve and that they told us all has guitars hanging wall to wall in his shop and he doesn’t a couple days in advance really seems to dig the knife in just sell guitars he buys them too. So if you’re looking for deeper to the industry. Meanwhile they didn’t tell Walmart some extra Christmas cash and have one, or two, or three or Lowe’s that they could not have limited hours or just run too many guitars, stop down and talk to Scott he may be online only sales for Black Friday. Apparently the virus able to help you out. If you’re in the Carlisle area swing in and see Chris from is really after anyone trying to have a drink or see some live music. Enough with the complaining let’s talk about Woodshed Guitar Works. He not only specializes in repairs but he also stocks some great gear to help fill that Christsomething useful. If you’re wondering where you can go to catch some live mas list. Down in Mount Joy we have Guitars on Main. been around forever and has always supported our paper. If you have a guitar question or need a new pickup [Mike’s specialty] to spice up that current rig, give him a call and he will surely help you out. Guitar Villa in Bethlehem has also been a supporter for years and you can check them out in person or online at guitar-villa.com. There are plenty of local choices for your music needs so please check them out and support them as they are striving to survive and compete with online sales. The local shops are run by musicians who are always willing to give advice and pointers on selecting the right instrument for your needs and they will help you set it up and get it in tune. Tell them the PA Musician Magazine sent you so they know their ad dollars are working. If you’re looking for some holiday cheer and want to try something new I would suggest checking out some of the fine Meads that Goblin Alchemy has to offer. I never thought of myself as a mead guy but if if you have never tried it I recommend getting a bottle or two and seeing what it is all about. I really like the Dragon Heart and Siren Song, delicious! The cool thing about them is they support local music and also have some really sweet D&D inspired labels. You can order some online along with your wine needs from Deerfoot Vineyards and Winery. They have a some great choices and you never have to leave your house. A new advertiser that you might say “hey what are they doing in a music paper?” is Kegel’s Produce on Old Tree Drive in Lancaster. They are a family owned and run business that also supports live music events so please if you’re

Well that’s it for this month, please everyone have a safe and healthy holiday and let’s ring in 2021 like 2020 was just a bad dream. Oh, and one more thing, it’s the co-founder’s Birthday this month on the 18th! So please wish Robin Noll aka MOM a Happy Birthday if you see her. She is the backbone of the paper and without her dedication it would have ceased to exist years ago. LOVE YOU MOM!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! By Rachel Rocks

Wow. What a crazy November! I hardly saw any music, but I did survive a Covid scare and Pneumonia. It was a whirlwind of a month and I’m glad to say I’m still alive! I’m very glad I decided at the last minute to go the last half of Dirtstock 2020. It was an event put on by the Colt Wilbur Band, benefitting the Wilbur Race Team. It just so happened to be on Halloween night, so there were lots of people dressed up and ready to party. The winner of the costume contest was my friend Gloria. She dressed up as the “Party Girl”. She was a Red Solo Cup, and she had balls that people could throw into her “cup”. It was hilarious and so original, I’m glad she won! I got there in time for Road Case. The event was held outdoors at the Mechanicsburg Men’s Club, so there were plenty of people, and lots of dancing! It was awesome to see so many people dancing and having a great time! The fire pits were blazing and everyone was staying warm under the spectacular full moon. I’m so glad that Road Case has been able to keep rockin’ the masses. I’ve seen them play at quite a few outdoor events in the last few

Chris DellaPorta / Road Case el, mixed in with Ed and Jeff on the backline, and last but not least the other Chris belting out the vocals, it is a rockin’ show not to be missed. Throughout the years I’ve seen lots of different band members mix and match to form new bands, I’m glad this group of seasoned musicians got together because it is always a show you don’t want to miss. Next to the stage was a very special performance by American Posse. These guys and girls only dust off their instruments for very special occasions. It really helps bring the crowd to the show when their performances are so far and few in between. On

Ronnie Rhoads /Colt Wilbur Band this night that had a special addition to the stage, Kyler, Steve and Shelby’s daughter was playing keys and singing along. Even though they haven’t been on a stage in quite a while, they didn’t miss a beat. They kept the party going and the dance floor packed. Kyler and Shelby singing together with their amazing harmonies was something I’m glad I didn’t miss! Last, but definitely not least, the Colt Wilbur Band took the stage. Even though the air was getting a bit chillier as the night went on, the Colt Wilbur Band kept the dance floor smokin’. I’ve

seen the Colt Wilbur Band consist of so many different musicians, but the current line-up is by far one of my favorites. Wally DeWall and Ronnie Rhoads flanking the sides of Colt with Don Carr holding them all together on the drums, is just a perfect combo. With Colt, Wally, and Ronnie all taking turns on lead vocals it really adds depth and an overall entertaining flow to their show. The Colt Wilbur Band has their debut album, Heart of Stone 8

we knew Wisconsin was a hot spot, our cheap flights were non refundable and non transferable, so we thought, if we are cautious and take all of the precautions we will be fine.. WELL.. let me tell ya.. even though we took lots of wipes, hand sanitzer, etc.. we were in fact not fine. I came home with what wound up being Pneumonia, but my Covid test came back negative. I think it was probably a false negative due to all of my symptoms, so I still treated myself as positive and quarantined for 14 days. I can tell you that at one point my life got pretty scary. Luckily a breathing treatment at the hospital was all I needed, and I didn’t wind up getting admitted. This crap is no joke. Please stay safe! Please have the mindset that this crap can get you around any corner!! I know I am personally on red alert. Now that I have pneumonia that makes me high risk, my lungs are weakened for 6-8 weeks. continued on next page...

Colt Wilbur / Colt Wilbur Band Not being able to breathe is no fun, and it’s not something I want to happen again. After quarantining for 14 days, Derek Henry was playing in my backyard at Newfangled and I couldn’t resist, I snuck out for a bit to see him play. It felt so good to be out of my house. It was literally my first event out. I didn’t even go out for groceries I had them delivered! Derek had a decent crowd enjoying his music. It’s hard for me to only see Derek playing as a solo act, it makes me miss the full rockin’ Observe the 93rd shows and even Dead shows! But I’m also very proud of Derek for adjusting to what life has given us and I’ve seen his confidence grow as a solo performer and that is pretty cool too. Newfangled and all breweries and small businesses are struggling so much. I’m glad to see them at least still supporting live music, we just all have to get out there and support them too. Honestly gift cards to any of these businesses scares me a bit, but you can always stock up on beer at your local brewery, instead of buying it from a convenience store or grocery store. This Thanksgiving was very weird for everyone. I was on the end of my quarantine and chose to stay home and away from

my family. I wasn’t even going to make a Thanksgiving Dinner. Then, I heard about the Rothrock Foundation tried to hand out 200 meals to families in need. Unfortunately, some of the families didn’t show up to the pick up points to get their food, so the Rothrock Foundation had some extra meals to get rid of. They luckily were able to give some to the Food Pantry in Middletown, but a lot of food banks can’t even take donated food because of Covid, so he still had some extras. I gave him a call and got a box for me and my family. It was EVERYTHING you needed for a complete Thanksgiving meal, the Turkey and all the fixins, even a pumpkin pie! When I brought the food home, I knew it was a lot for our family, so then I invited over a friend’s family because I know they were also not planning on making a meal. Thanks to the Rothrock Foundation 9 people ate a fabulous Thanksgiving meal.. well I had to cook it, so maybe not “fabulous”.. lol.. but it was delicious and very unexpected. The Rothrock Foundation is currently looking for families that are in need for Christmas. If you know someone that needs a little extra boost this Christmas, check out their website, www.rothrockfoundation.org. Another shout out goes to another small business, The Blue Sky Tavern, just opened in the old Field House/Klinger’s building in Etters. Ideally they didn’t want to open their business in the middle of a pandemic, but they were already working on it back before this all started, and since they had so much money already invested, they had no choice but to open. They are doing everything they can to keep their business clean and Covid compliant. They are wiping down high touch services every 15 minutes, if not more than that. Their food is absolutely FABULOUS! I had bourbon-soaked peaches and waffles for brunch, and it was so good! I had a friend with me who is Vegan, and even tho they didn’t really have anything on the menu for her, their chef, Fred, came out and personally talked to her and figured out a delicious meal for her too. She said it was one of the best meals she’s ever eaten at a restaurant! They are also trying to support other small businesses. If you shop at a local store within 5 miles of their business and you bring the receipt in during lunch or brunch, you get 10% off your order. It is a great way to support the community and each other. They made some beautiful changes inside, and they definitely plan on supporting live music in the near future. If you are looking somewhere fun and new to try for lunch or

dinner, check out The Blue Sky Tavern in Etters. When you are thinking of gifts for your loved ones this Christmas, please don’t forget the little people.. the small businesses in your community and beyond. Most bands and businesses have websites with merch, music, and so much more. Get online and support those that need a boost. When you’re hungry consider getting take out from a local restaurant. If you’re brave and need a night out, get out and go to a restaurant before they get shut down again! Hopefully we will all get through this Pandemic together. Please make sure and check on your friends and family. Depression is very real, and it will be a long, hard, lonely winter for a lot of people. A simple text, message, or better yet a phone call can really make a difference for someone. Feel free to reach out to me at RachelRocks@pamusician.net. Thank you all for reading my article every month. Thank you for continuing to support the PA Musician Magazine. All of your support has meant so much to us. Don’t forget another great gift you can get your favorite musician or business, is an ad in the PA Musician Magazine!! Please SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC and LOCAL BUSINESSES. Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! As we continue to navigate our way through the current pandemic, luckily music continues to help alleviate fans through these strange times. Many artists continue to live stream shows via the internet and fortunately there are local musicians still playing shows for the live music experience Shea Quinn (The Sharks) has been playing Cold Springs Brewery in Mechanicsburg once a week this past month. Joey Dalto (The Famous) played possibly his last show of 2020 on November 20th at American Legion in New Cumberland. Dalto’s career has spanned over two decades playing in bands: Echoburn, Pocket Rockit, The Famous and currently promoting his solo album, “All For You”. I’ve also been fortunate to be invited to attend weekly band practices of The Super High-Tech Jet Fighters. The Harrisburg-based band was recently added to Apple Music’s ‘Breaking Rock Playlist’ along with notable artists: AC/DC, Foo Fighters, Rob Zombie and Pearl Jam. NATIONAL NEWS: Guns N’ Roses have announced eight stadium shows in Australia and New Zealand in November 2021. The TEG Dainty stadium tour is the first international run announced since COVID-19 and border closures in March. The tour is expected to sell over 325,000 tickets. The Australian promoter declared: “Announcing an international tour of this magnitude as we come out of the most challenging year in the history of live entertainment is truly gratifying We’re all eager to return to business as usual and who better to lead the charge into international stadium touring than the mighty Guns N’ Roses!” Dolly Parton adds pandemic hero to her list of accomplishments The legendary country singer donated $1 million dollars to Nashville’s Vanderbilt University Medical Center in April which helped researchers develop Moderna’s experimental coronavirus vaccine, announced in mid-November. Moderna’s vaccine is said to be 94.5% effective against COVID-19 in preliminary findings. Parton is even mentioned in the New England Journal of Medicine as a supporter of Vanderbilt’s research. The Super High-Tech Jet Fighters practice the headline performer on February 7th at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Weeknd broke though into mainstream with his smash hit “Can’t Feel My Face” which topped the Billboard 200 in 2015 and won a Grammy. Earlier this year, The Weeknd’s hit single “Blinding Lights” became his fifth song to peak at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “The Weeknd has introduced a sound all his own,” said Jay-Z, founder of Roc Nation. “His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and artistry This is an extraordinary moment in time and the Pepsi Super Bowl LV Halftime Show is going to be an extraordinary experience with an extraordinary performer.” The Weeknd, whose real name is, Abel Tesfaye, joins a list of celebrated musicians who have played during Super Bowl halftime shows, including Madonna, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Katy Perry, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and last year’s duo of Shakira and Jennifer Lopez.

Live Nation UK announced a special concert by Liam Gallagher, who will be performing on a barge floating on the River Thames in London, England. The performance will be streamed on Dec. 5. Dubbed “Down By The River Thames”, Liam Gallagher will be accompanied by his full band. The set will be recorded and streamed at 8 p.m. in different time zones and tickets are priced at £16.50 ($21.70). “The show will include iconic songs, fan favorites and a few surprises, spanning both his all-conquering solo career and his legendary time with Oasis – some of which he hasn’t performed in years,” Live Nation stated. A comment from Liam Gallagher reads: “To all my brothers and sisters around the world. I’m performing a one-off celestial live performance for you to stream, I’ll be performing tracks from my two number 1 solo albums as well as some stone cold Oasis classics, some of which you haven’t heard me sing for a long, long time. Ed Varner — NO SHOES REQUIRED By Josh Noll

This month we are featuring the one and only Ed Varner! Ed has been performing in our area for years in many local bands and has now transitioned into his solo act. With the onslaught of Covid 19 trying to kill live music, Ed did not waste time and instantly started performing what he calls his “Not Live Streams”. As the months went on he was able to begin playing “Live” again but also has been including live streams so if people can’t make it to the show they can still join in on the action. Known for his unique style of performing covers, and never wearing shoes, we decided it was time to sit down with Ed and talk about his career in music and how he dealt with live music in Covid times... PAM: How long have you been playing out/when did you get started? Have you always been a solo act or were you ever in any bands? ED: I bought my first guitar when I was 19…that’s 1983. I didn’t get real good at it, but I could do the David Lee Roth screams, so I got my first gig as a vocalist in the Juniata County band Strycnine in 1986. From the late 80’s into the early 90’s I was lead vocalist for Riff Raff from Lewistown, played guitar and

did lead vocals for Tsk Tsk from Mifflintown, played bass and sang in Razkal from Lewistown. I spent several years playing guitar and singing in church, as well as playing and singing in some Christian bands: Torn Veil, Joe’s Army, and Hinge. A couple of years ago I joined The Remnants from Mifflintown as the bass player and ended my band career playing guitar at a few gigs with them. I started solo in late 2018 after playing some songs at an open mic. It kind of exploded from there.

PAM: What got you into playing music? Is there a certain artist/ album/person that really influenced you? ED: There was always music playing in my house while I was growing up. We had one of those huge console stereos, about 6 feet long, that you could load up 6 or 8 records and just let them play. It was mostly 50s and 60s stuff, and a lot of country from back then. Then I heard some rock and realized I’d probably need to grow my hair. What made me want to play guitar and make music was hearing Kiss “Alive” for the first time. Still one of my favorite albums. I wanted to be Ace Frehley when I grew up. PAM: Who do you consider your major musical influences?

ED: Kiss first and foremost. Then I heard AC/DC. When I first started playing in bands I got into hair metal, and I still listen some. Mostly classic rock from the 70s these days. PAM: Do you play just covers or do you have any originals? ED: I’ve written and played a few originals in the past. There’s a reason I don’t play them. They kind of suck. My show is 100% covers. There are too many great songs out there for me to rewrite them and call them mine. PAM: You were one of the first people in our area to really concentrate on the live Streams when Covid 19 hit, were you doing live streams before? Or is this something you began because of covid? ED: When COVID shut us down in March, I had a bunch of shows scheduled. I wanted to play. The first show was a Saturday night at the Short Bus Brew House in Burnham. I’d never done live streaming before. So I thought what the heck, let’s do a live stream NOT from the Short Bus. I worked with Husky Hummel, one of the owners, and I played like I was there, but I was not. I set up a virtual tip jar and gave the money to a person who

with me to play a few songs at one of my gigs there. Ended up he would sit in with me for a few songs during every gig. After a few months we brought in Erik Bryant as a lead guitar player. For the past year plus we practice once a week (eat good food and drink a couple of good Short Bus brews), play a few songs at my solo shows, and have done a number of band gigs at the Bus. We started out with my set list, which is 60’s, 70’s, 80’s stuff. These guys brought in stuff I wouldn’t normally do, namely 90’s stuff like Chili Peppers and Alice In Chains. We have a pretty eclectic set list. We even have a few country songs that we do now. And Husky is doing his first lead vocal on “A Country Boy Can Survive: (Hank, Jr.). I think we’ll probably just stay as the three of us. We’ve yet to play outside the Short Bus (other than an EHE live stream during the Summer), but there are plans. As much as I like Project EHE, my favorite person to play with is my 4 year old granddaughter Ellie. She gets to quite a few of my shows and, when she does, she steals the show and the crowd when she comes up to sing. She has a nice set list (she rocks “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” and “The Wheels On the Bus”), and makes songs up as she goes. All tips that Ellie gets, Ellie keeps.

Album what would it be? ED: April Wine - The Nature Of the Beast PAM:List some of your favorite covers that you are doing right now at your shows. ED: Styx - “Come Sail Away” is fun. For some reason Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road” makes me happy. 867-5309, “Margaritaville” and “Sweet Caroline” are fun because of crowd participation. “Purple Rain” and “Tennessee Whiskey”. PAM: We all have that one song that we have played one too many times, what is one song that you will never play again? ED: I’m not that stereotype. If someone requests a song, I’ll do what I can to play it even if I hate it. Of course I guilt the requester into giving my a nice tip. I’ve played “Baby Shark” about 30 times in the past year…. PAM: With Covid still having a major affect on live music what are your plans for 2021? ED: At this point 2021 is a little iffy. A lot of venues are tentative in booking because we don’t know if things will be open, if music will be allowed, if they can serve drinks. I’m ready to book when we know things will be happening. PAM:Who would you like to thank? ED: I’m going to be vague with this one because I don’t want to miss anyone. So I’ll just say I want to thank all of my family and friends, band mates and venues have supported me throughout my music career. Ed would also like to thank Short Bus Brew House for letting them take pics for the story and for always giving him a spot to perform live music. Be sure to check out Ed’s schedule every month in the paper and be sure to go catch a show or watch one of his many Live Streams. Cover & Cover story photos by Chris Rider Photography.

was out of work because of COVID. Over the next few months I did a live stream NOT from the venue I was scheduled to play almost every weekend. The majority of my tips went to those who couldn’t work because of the shut downs. The live streams were really great for a lot of reasons. First, I got to play. People who live far away and can’t come see me live got to see me play. My son, who was deployed (USMC) watched a lot of them. The furthest was from Australia A friend I “met” through another friend through the live streams. I got a lot of requests during the streams, and added a bunch of songs to my set. Also learned there are some songs I shouldn’t play. Now that I’m playing live again, I stream most of my shows. Just for those who want to see and can’t be there. Feel free to tip. PAM: Tell us how you stayed so busy over the last 8 months with all the restrictions and show cancellations it must not have been easy. How did you maintain a positive attitude and keep on booking shows? ED: Throughout April and May I played the live streams almost every weekend, and some through the week. I booked an outdoor show in June, just to play. It actually got pushed back a week because of the “YELLOW” phase, but we got it in. I was able to play a number of the shows that I had booked because they were outdoors, or the venues where large enough to get people in with the restrictions. It sucked that I couldn’t play my live shows. Yes, I had the streams, but it’s not the same. I love interacting with the people. I’m a very positive person most of the time, so I didn’t let this get me down. I feel bad for all of the venues and other businesses fighting to keep things going through all of this crap. I feel really bad for the musicians who make a living doing this and had no money coming in. When I wasn’t streaming, I’d watch other’s streams and support them in every way possible. PAM: I see you sometimes play with a couple other people, Tell us about project EHE and what you guys are about. What type of music do you play, band members, any plans to form a full band? How did you guys meet up? ED: Project EHE came about when some guys got together to drink beer and decided to play some music, too. It goes back to Summer 2019 when Husky Hummel, one of the owners of the Short Bus, and a pretty good bass player, asked if he could sit in December, 2020

EHE at Shortbus Brew House PAM: What is up with the No Shoes thing? When did this start? Do you ever play in Shoes? What do you do when it gets cold lol? ED: Life in general, I only wear shoes when I have to. No shoes while playing started about 20 years ago when I was playing with a church band. One night at practice I took my sandals off and thought, “Wow, this feels good playing like this.” Since then, I rarely wear shoes when I play. First time in a venue I ask if anyone will be offended or turned off if I’m barefoot. My last pre-Covid show was in March at Que Brew in Selinsgrove. With all of the fear, we thought it best that I have as much covered up and I could, so I wore jeans and my shoes. I have a pair of socks in my gig bag just in case it gets too cold. I’ve only worn them once. PAM: Tell us about the Kazoo is it just for certain songs or do you grab it whenever the mood strikes? ED: Early 2019 I added “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” to my list. The song has a nice little guitar solo that is really missed if it’s not played. On a whim, I bought a kazoo to play the solo. Since then, I’ve added it to a bunch of other songs. And sometimes I just play it when I think I need to get the crowd’s attention.

RIDER’S ON THE STORM By Chris Rider

Well, November is here and gone, along with Thanksgiving...the restrictions continue and in some cases get even worse. While I was able to get out for some music this month, it certainly wasn’t as much as I’d hoped. Between cancellations of a few shows I’d planned to attend, as well as trying to sell a house and buy another...well, life is complicated as we all know. I will say this...with all the stress of life as we know it nowadays, music is there every day to at least dull the stress and anxiety of life in these new times. Whether it’s going out to see someone play live, watching a live stream, or listening to someone on Spotify (or whatever streaming entity you so choose), there’s still always music.

Earthbound Misits Indian Summer Jars

Indian Summer Jars

I started out the month with a local trip to the Winery at Hunters Valley to see Indian Summer Jars lay down their beautiful folk music for a great (but socially distanced!) crowd. It was a bit cold and dreary of a day, but nothing that a bottle of wine and some good music couldn’t overcome. The group played a number of their own original melodies, blending beautiful harmonies together while fans of all ages enjoyed some wine & food. They also included a number of covers from artists like Grace Potter, Maggie Rogers, Tom Petty, Joe Cocker and others. What a great and relaxing afternoon this made for me. I then made it up to Iron Vines Winery in Sunbury to see my buddies Ken and Dan of Earthbound Misfits play their wide array of covers with their own flair and style. These guys are extremely talented musicians and truly great people as well. The guys covered music from artists like Tom Petty, Gnarls Barkley, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Tracy Chapman, and a ton of others. The Iron Vines is just a awesome, comfortable

place to see some live music and I may have mentioned in the past that they do a great job creating a nice variety of wines. Next up was a trip to Isle of Que Brewing Company for their monthly Singer/Songwriter Showcase, hosted by Jason Yoder. This was their first showcase that they were able to host since February, so they were very (understandably!) excited to invite local artists in to introduce folks to their music. The evening started off with Jason Yoder sharing several of his own songs, each showcasing his great storytelling ability. Jason was followed by Kevin Regan, a kind gentleman that I spoke to after the music was over. I always enjoy when I get a chance to speak to artists at their shows, it gives me a better feel for their music, the influences, and what makes them the artists they are. Kevin played songs with great rhythm that listeners just couldn’t help but tap their feet to. The 3rd artist to play for the evening was Prairie Dogma’s own Michael Lundy. Michael’s always a blast to listen to, whether solo or with his band. He played a number of

Jason Yoder cool jams including a fun song about a mean dog named Datsun. What turned out to be my final trip for the month was to see More Than Riders (MTR) play at Shermans Creek Inn in Shermansdale. MTR started out as Riders, a father and son duo of Terry and Eric Rider (no relation to me...we don’t think LOL) 13 years ago. Last September they brought in 12 String Wonder of the World Colby Dove on bass, and drummer Tom Emond, a Massachusetts transplant. MRT’s covers strolled along through songs from The Hollies, Deep Blue Something, Bob Seger, Tesla and many others. The set included a long drum solo by Tom as well as a solo set from Colby. It was a great night of music, as well as some great food (thanks Matt!) and drink. So...that was my month of live music. Like I said, it wasn’t as much as I’d hoped or planned for, but I suppose that’s just how things are at least for the foreseeable future. Every artist that I go out to see continues to play with hope and a love for their craft that just amazes me each and every time. It can sometimes be hard during this season to remain positive and hopeful, but music helps me quite a bit as I’m sure it does anyone reading our magazine. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Just a reminder: if you’ve got a show coming up that I should see, make sure to send me an invite, shoot me an email or a message, let me know about it. The majority of the shows that December, 2020

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price

We again enter another holiday season, and will soon close the door on the past 366 days and open the door on the next 365. This season will provide the opportunity to slow life down, relax and take stock for a few days, and resolve for better tomorrows in 2021. I wish all of our readers and the music community a safe and pleasant holiday season, and better fortunes in 2021. Live music moved back indoors as outdoor temperatures dropped in recent weeks, and McGarvey’s featured a few shows, including one national recording act. Tantric visited McGarvey’s in late October, with The Pennsoulvanians opening. The newlook Pennsoulvanians – with the addition of Mike Stanley taking over bass duties – kicked off the night with their blend of original R&B, hip-hop, jazz and reggae grooves. Mike’s presence makes The Pennsoulvanians’ groove bigger and thicker, bolstering the sonic launching pad for singer/guitarist Chet Denny and rap specialist Michael “Duville” Thomas to weave their vocal magic. The songs all sounded strong; this night including “Strip You of Your Innocence,” the reggae-toned “Day Has Come,” “Forty Acres,” “Girl You Deserve to Be,” “Pennsoulvania” and others. The pieces of this band all worked well together – Chet’s and Michael’s respective vocal passages complemented each other and provided puzzle pieces to the same lyrical narrative; and the instrumental components gelled as well, including Lyndsay Reilly’s sax solo displays, Nate Nagle’s tasty guitar leads and Brett Fanelli’s vibrant keyboard flourishes, all backed with Mike’s bass lines and Todd Harshbarger’s steady drum rhythms. This set showed yet more Hugh Ferreira / Tantric

forward momentum for this group, and their future looks bright. Tantric then proceeded to light up the house with their powerful and tightly-executed performance. From the get-go, founding member, singer and acoustic guitarist Hugo Ferreira, lead guitarist Sebastian LaBar (son of Cinderella guitarist Jeff LaBar), bassist Jaron Gulino and drummer Jon Loree delivered raw energy and intensity as they played songs from throughout the group’s catalog. The group opened with their 2008 track “Down and Out,” and followed with “Angry,” one

of two songs off their latest studio album, “Mercury Retrograde.” (The other tune, “Letting Go,” was played toward the end of their set.) They did more popular tracks such as “Fall Down,” “Hey Now,” “Mind Control,” “Mourning” and their main set-closer “Breakdown.” Some of their highlights included Sebastian breaking out a double-neck guitar for “Astounded,” Hugo dedicating the song “Hero” to his mother, and an impressive rendition of

ist Frank Conrad and drummer Justin Burket fired off original favorites like “Hand That Feeds,” “The Mine,” “All We Know,” “Bus,” “Friday Night” and “Along These Streets.” They also included their punk-rocking makeover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and a few newer original tunes as well. And X’s For Eyes slammed the lid on the night with their high-velocity set of punk-rocking original tunes. Singers and guitarists Tom Noel and Tim Mort, bassist Oob and drummer Justin Fair fired through original tunes old and new, including newer songs such as “814,” “Tragedy” and “Radio,” plus established numbers such as “Walk Away” and more. Whitesnake’s “Is This Love.” Hugo gave a fiery and intense performance that connected well with the audience, while Sebastian showed excellent skills on the guitar strings with his heated solo work, and Jon went for broke and hit his drums hard. The crowd called for an encore at set’s end, and Tantric answered with three tunes to close out the night. Despite COVID restrictions, this was a successful, smoothly-run show, and early word is that Tantric may return once the COVID situation is in the rearview mirror. Local punk rock took the spotlight during a Halloween night triple-bill at McGarvey’s. Cheeze of the Railroad City Murder Machines strummed his acoustic guitar and sang a number of acoustic-geared punk rock tunes to commence the music; including Misfits numbers like “Skulls” and “Saturday Night,” Rancid’s “St. Mary” and more. Jokingly disguised as the “thermostat police,” the dads of The Snipped then arrived on the stage to step up the tempo with their ‘dadcore’ punk-rocking favorites and new tunes. during the weekend preceding Thanksgiving. Dr. Chance Bartleby and the ? opened the night. Instructing math by day and entertainer by night, the Doctor and “the ?” (his drummer) intrigued onlookers with his eccentric brand of music. Dr. Chance blended elements of indie rock, folk, punk and emo into an unpredictable sound. His songs could launch into sudden spoken word and yelling rants, humorous self-deprecating asides and one-liners, plus more. The Heathen Parade then took the music in a decisively heavier direction. Lead snarler and guitarist Jason Straw, bassist Jay Snider and drummer Rik Golden churned out their groove-driven brand of metal aggression. They crunched out

heavy original assaults, including their recently-issued singles “Born Again Leviathan” and “Notorious,” along with “Ready or Not at All,” the new “Dead Heat for Dead Last” and their closer “Diesel Jesus.” The Heathen Parade merged melodic elements with aggressive power metal riffs and rhythms plus a touch of swagger, and their rigid, thunderous sound drew a good response from the McGarvey’s audience. The final outdoor performance I witnessed this year took place in late October, as Asbury Lane entertained outdoor diners at Huntingdon’s Stone Town Cafe & Gallery. Singer Tami Hinish and singer/guitarist Jeremy Schimansky were joined this night by harmonica-wielding frequent-flyer guest Jack Coyle. Asbury Lane was in the midst of a rendition of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” as I arrived. Keeping with their tradition, Asbury Lane delivered several numbers from the John Prine catalog – includFrank Conrad of ing “In Spite of Ourselves,” The Snipped

“That’s the Way the World Goes Round” and “Spanish Pipedream.” They also did renditions of John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads,” Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” the ever-popular “Wagon Wheel,” the Johnny Cash classics “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Ring of Fire,” “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” their night-ending take on Willie Nelson’s “On the Road Again” and more. All three musicians were in good form; Tami and Jeremy both

displayed great voices and harmonies, and Jack colored the songs with tasteful harmonica passages in all the right places. Coupled with a tasty dinner (I again enjoyed the Café’s parmesan chicken over pasta), Asbury Lane’s performance made a great start to the evening. As Asbury Lane’s show was early and ended by 8 p.m., this allowed me time to catch a second show this night just a few blocks up the street, as Charlie McClanahan was making the mucontinued on next page..

a wide variety of tunes, spanning John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery” to Elvis Presley’s “That’s Alright Mama” to the Temptations’ “My Girl” to Ray LaMontagne’s “You Are the Best Thing” to Philip Phillips’ “Home,” to his funky and folksy variation on “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” to end the night. He also included favorites from Mumford & Sons, John Denver, White Stripes and Steve Miller Band. Charlie did each song in his own punchy and soulful style, making each song sound fresh. This show, part of Standing Stone’s After Hours series, was being shown online as well, and in between sets a staff member interviewed Charlie for the online audience, allowing him to share his story, life, influences and inspirations for his music. Combined with a refreshing Standing Stone grasshopper milkshake, Charlie’s performance made for a nice nightcap for my live music endeavors this day. Among online live streaming performances I caught in recent weeks was MauveStröm, presented by the Central Pennsylvania Music Hall of Fame on Facebook. First formed as Mauve in 2016 during a class Lindsay Reilly in the Music Business TechnolThe Pennsoulvanians

ogy (MBT) program at Millersville University, the group reformed as MauveStröm in 2018 with a cast of Millersville MBT alumni and current students. Eight members strong including three singers, MauveStröm performed a variety of classic rock favorites from the 1970s and 80s. With all three vocalists – two female and one male – alternating lead singing duties, MauveStröm did numbers from AC/DC, Pat Benatar, Journey, Foreigner, Van Halen, Heart, Kansas, Bon Jovi, and their closing edition of Deep Purple’s “Highway

Charlie McClanahan Star.” All three singers packed potent, high-flying voices, and MauveStröm’s instrumental corps of two guitarists, a keytarist, bassist and drummer were tight and talented. The group’s enthusiasm and energy toward their song material made this an enjoyable presentation. Four members of MauveStröm – singer Elaina Hatton, guitarists Lauren Hill and Brady White, and keytarist Barry Atticks – will be joined by Millersville students Emily Lingle on drums and Declan Fischer on bass plus vocal instructor Kristin continued on next page..

Sims to issue a special recording and video this month of their hard-rocking version of “O Come O Come Emmanuel,” recorded and mixed by Grammy award winner David Ivory. Blood Union shared their acoustic performance at the Break Room in Twin Rocks on Facebook last month. Tim Frick on lead vocals and guitar, Ron Gallucci on bass and backing vocals, Jay Snider on double-neck guitar and Ben Frick tapping the cajon did a selection of the group’s original songs. Among the numbers Blood Union performed were “Sweet Misery,” “World Apart,” “Survive,” “What You Lost” and the group’s current single, the anthemic “Lit.” The live stream sound quality was good, and the group sounded strong through all of it; the in-house audience received Blood Union’s songs well. This provided a good introduction to much of Blood Union’s current song arsenal, which others will get to experience in plugged-in electric form once COVID gets in the rearview mirror and more live shows can happen again. The bass player and singer for The Boomers, Bob Helbig, presents a weekly live-streaming performance on Facebook every Thursday evening. During a performance early last month streamed live from Patton, Bob was initiating his new harmony box as he performed a wide mixture of acoustic rock, pop and country numbers. He debuted a few new songs, and broke out a lot of tunes I haven’t heard in a while – such as Bob Dylan’s “If Not for You” (made into a big 1971 hit by Olivia Newton John), The Searchers’ “Needles and Pins,” Marty Stuart’s “Hillbilly Rock” and Al Stewart’s “End of the Day.” He also did numbers from the Eagles, David Allan Coe, Emerson Lake & Palmer, John Denver, Fleetwood Mac, Del Shannon, CCR, and – if you’re familiar with Bob’s musical world – the Beatles, doing renditions of “In My Life” and “Falling” during the portion of the performance I saw. Bob sounded strong through all of it, singing it all with heart and injecting his cordial personalJay Snyder of ity into the presentation. And The Heathen Parade the harmony box worked well

too. This was a fun and enjoyable performance, and Bob’s live-streaming Thursday sets provide a relaxing way to start the weekend early. Although now suspended until early 2021 due to COVID-19, Altoona’s Oak Spring Winery had been presenting bi-weekly Open Mic sessions on alternating Sunday afternoons. I got to check out one of these in early November. Organized and hosted by Chris Norris, this day’s session featured performances from a couple performing instrumental bluegrass numbers, at Oob /X’s for Eyes least two solo singers, and Don “Turk” Schnars toward the end of the afternoon. “Turk” played acoustic guitar and sang several folk, rock and pop favorites such as John Prine’s “Angel from Montgomery,” The Band’s “The Weight,” Steve Goodman/Arlo Guthrie’s “City of New Orleans,” The Bellamy Brothers’ “Old Hippie,” Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville” and “Wagon Wheel.” As things were winding down, host Chris Norris got up and started playing guitar and singing, and asked if I wanted to get up and do anything; I just

happened to have my djembe in the car, and brought it in, resulting in an impromptu “after hours” jam session with both Chris and “Turk!” This was fun, as we haphazardly went at it on a number of tunes, from Elvis Presley’s “Little Sister” to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” to Jerry Jeff Walker/Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s “Mr. Bojangles,” Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door,” Don Williams/Eric Clapton’s “Tulsa Time” and more. Don’t be surprised to see such jams again once Open Mic resumes

~In Loving Memory~ JAMES “BIG JIM” RICOTTA

By Jim Price The central PA community and music scene lost a valuable member and friend with the passing of James “Big Jim” Ricotta on Wednesday, Nov. 11, after a valiant battle with cancer. Big Jim was 65. Big Jim played bass, guitar and keys plus sang, and was a member of numerous area bands and projects over the past three decades, including Banditos, Penetrator, Half Tempted, Johnny Cash/June Carter tribute group Ol’ 97, Rokkandy, the Backyard Rockers, Snake Bite, an acoustic duo with “Bad Daze Rob” Carolus, and most recently with Second Edition. Jim had a reputation for knowing many songs; some observers quipped that he knew songs that hadn’t even been written yet. Big Jim also was an area radio announcer, who worked Big Jim w/ Rokkandy on-air at WVAM and Q94 in February 2015 the Altoona market during the

1990s, as well stations in Clearfield County. He also was a former manager at the Altoona location of Coconuts Music & Movies. On a personal note, Big Jim was among my closest circle of friends for more than 25 years. He became a lot of things to me over that time – friend, co-worker, boss, bandmate, rock concert and vacation partner-in-crime, confidante, mentor, and just an allaround great human being. Big Jim had a big heart, and frequently helped others in need, and loaned his musical talents to benefit events when possible. Jim had a great sense of humor, and could frequently bring laughter with his wit and antics, and even some of the accidental situations he would get into. But his willingness to help out others will live on as a major part of his legacy. He would help out friends as well as folks he barely knew. One favorite example of his generosity happened in late 2001, when he loaned his extra car to a then-young family rock band called Halestorm, so they could transport their gear

20

and themselves from State College to Altoona for a gig at Peter C’s, after their band van broke down in front of Rockview State Penitentiary. Big Jim set an example of selflessness, and the world would be a much better place if more folks followed that example. We at PA Musician share our heartfelt sympathies with Jim’s family and many friends throughout the area community and music scene.

STEVE SHIFFLER

The central PA music scene was shocked and saddened by the unexpected passing of Steve Shiffler on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at age 63. Steve was the frontman to a number of area bands over the past four decades, including XL, Detour, Legacy, Not Them Guys, 100 Proof and more. More recently, Steve made guest appearances on stage with This Albatross, which features his daughter Autumn on vocals and son-inlaw Phil Wagner on lead guitar and vocals. Steve was popular for his robust, energetic style and go-for-broke, bring-thecrowd-into-the-party onstage personality. He was well-liked in the area music community. Off the stage, Steve loved the outdoors and was an avid fish- Steve Shiffler / Dennie Huber Event/ July 2016 erman. He had an energy and gusto for life, and lived each day to its fullest. Although I have many memories of seeing Steve on the live stage, perhaps my favorite memory of Steve was during the 2003 edition of Dennie Huber’s “Crazy Fest” Amateur Youth Talent Show at the Greenwood Firehall in Altoona. Steve was there to watch his daughter, Autumn, as she sang and competed for one of the day’s trophies. As Autumn sang, I’ll never forget the look of happiness on Steve’s face as he videotaped her performance; the look of a proud father enjoying his daughter’s moment in the spotlight. It was a special moment. We at PA Musician extend our heartfelt sympathies to Autumn, Phil, Steve’s family, friends and the music community.

PA MUSICIAN REVIEWS By Jim Price

TED McCLOSKEY – THE LOST SEASON SESSIONS VOL. 2 – MONOTONY AND MADNESS (no label) When Ted McCloskey released his first pandemic-themed album – The Lost Season Sessions Vol. 1 – The Big Pause – earlier this year, he said he planned to release a new record for every season he was not out playing live shows. As the pandemic is still with us, Ted delivers as promised, issuing his follow-up pandemic-related album and 12th overall, called The Lost Season Sessions Vol. 2 – Monotony and Madness. Ted continues to musically explore his life and the world around him as COVID-19 and a political dumpster fire dominate news headlines, and he grapples with a year of mental and financial strain from not being able to earn his living as one of State College’s busi-

est live performers. This album displays a grittier, guitar-driven edge to underscore Ted’s edgy observations. He grows weary of the whole 2020 nightmare on the hard, soul-driven leadoff track “Precious Mess,” expressing disdain with confinement and the monotony of current-day reality. On the thundering “Downside of the Boom,” Ted observes a nation in big trouble economically, idealogically and spiritually, teetering on the edge of the abyss in this pandemic year. “Statues” considers the ongoing controversy of monuments to historical figures and their fates, weighing their historical significances against their flawed ideals and deeds. “Angels in the Street” recognizes those who have stood up against injustices and pointed cameras to expose wrongdoing in the streets. The raw and punchy “Invisible Man” addresses insensitivity and lack of empathy, while the redneck-tinged rocker “American Man-Child” satirizes petulant, anti-masking, self-proclaimed freedom fighters. Ted also includes a song he created last year, “(No Parking) This Side of Temporary,” pondering how highrise construction has displaced mom-and-pop businesses and the “small town charm” of Happy Valley. Ted successfully constructs 11 songs that are each individually strong and captivating, yet continued on next page...

work together as a cohesive whole set. The arrangements rock, groove and punch; and Ted’s words cleverly connect. Created, recorded and self-produced during this past summer, this album sounds full, balanced, nuanced and edgy. Like The Lost Season Sessions Vol. 1, Ted McCloskey’s latest album vibrantly expresses his thoughts and concerns about 2020 and society’s troubled current-day reality. The Lost Season Sessions Vol. 2 – Monotony and Madness presents edgy rock for our turbulent times. (The album can obtained through Ted McCloskey’s Bandcamp page.) X’s FOR EYES – EVERYTHING’S FALLING APART (no label) Altoona’s X’s For Eyes has been throwing down high-velocity punk rock on central PA stages since 2010, and on their fourth and latest album, Everything’s Falling Apart, they show no signs of slowing down. Featuring the double-barreled vocal and guitar tandem of Tom Noel and Tim Mort, plus Oob on bass and Justin Fair on drums, X’s For Eyes floors the accelerator from the get-go and tears through the album’s seven tracks. Their tempos are fast and furious, their instrumental execution is tight and tense, and Tom and Tim hold nothing back on their scathing vocal deliveries, as they express heartfelt words on anxieties, ambitions, deceptions, paybacks, and social commentary. The album launches on a torrid pace with “A Moment Away,” with Tom at a crossroads and stressed out about what to do. Tim is anxious to grab life by the horns on the fast-firing and anthemic “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” and Tom expresses exasperation and heartbreak on “Empty.” Payback is promised on the acidic “Sooner or Later,” and distrust in the government machine and media hype inform the words of “My Enemy.” The songs are rapid fire and aggressive, yet each has a discernable and catchy melody. The performances are turbulent and enthusiastic, and X’s For Eyes’ pacing keeps this album tight and feverish through its entirety. The album sounds powerful and sharp, yet balanced with everything clear in the mix. X’s For Eyes hits a consistent, high-octane stride on Everything’s Falling Apart, offering fast, hard-hitting, exuberant punk rock. (The album can be obtained through X’s For Eyes’ Bandcamp page.) NAG CHAMPIONS MYSTERY BAND – PEEL & REVEAL (no label) Describing themselves as “guys who dig rock ‘n’ roll music exploring infinity while embracing the unknown,” the Nag Champions Mystery Band continue their psychedelic-toned musical explorations on their third CD, Peel & Reveal. The northern Cambria County-based core roster of Derek Gresh on vocals, guitars, organ and harmonica; Tim Homerski on bass, keyboards and flute; and Ed Hofer on drums and percussion blend elements of rock, blues, Americana, folk, reggae, country and jam improvisation into a diverse-sounding mixture over the album’s dozen tracks. As demonstrated over their previous two albums, Nag Champions again shows both the knack for creating

interesting melodies and an adventurous, explorative spirit that manifests itself in other psychedelic jams and workouts. Several the songs are hook-laden and infectious, especially the folksy opening track “Different Ways,” the gently-bouncing “Broken Arrow Girl” and driving “Big Web” with its cyclical melody. The Nag Champions channel a Santana-like Latino-rock vibe on the harder “Behind the Sky,” with guitars and keys breaking a sweat and Ed working out his hand percussion arsenal. The group taps into 1960s/70s-period psychedelia on several numbers; including the indie-flavored “Inverted World,” the expansive and kaleiDecember, 2020

doscopic “Side Trip,” and the psychedelic reggae of “Under the Water.” Nag Champions slows it down on the shadowy “Deep Ocean Burn,” and delves into slightly harder rock terrain with “A While Longer.” While this group likes their musical adventures, the whole album has relaxed and casual vibe to it, as the Nag Champions let the muse carry them through each song, freeing them to improvise and indulge freely. Recorded at Ed Hofer’s home studio in Patton, Peel & Reveal sounds crisp and consistent throughout, nicely balanced and full. Nag Champions continue to define and expand their musical scope on Peel & Reveal, resulting in an album that provides its fair share of catchy melodies and sonic adventurism. (The album can be obtained through the group’s Bandcamp website.) WE CAME FROM SPACE – WHILE YOU WERE AWAY (no label) They came from space in 2013 to show us How to Be Human, their debut album. Musical adventurers from the cosmos of western PA, We Came From Space have returned with their second chapter, entitled While You Were Away. Time travelers from another aeon when long-form record albums were revered as iconic masterpieces, the intergalactic cast of guitarist and singer Dave Buzard, keyboardist and singer Bill Hubauer, bassist and singer Dave Hawk and drummer Tim Malone present 11 exquisite chunks of 1970s/80s-derived, progressive-edged arena rock. Hints of classic Styx, Kansas, Boston, Supertramp and Deep Purple are distilled into this stew of melodies and arrangements, which We Came From Space ferments into their own inventive and creative directions. Beyond the obvious musicality here, these guys are wordsmiths too, generating clever, observational and often sardonic lyrics about a world

teetering between hope and haywire. The album’s beginning is hopeful, as the spacey harmony prelude “A Light Never Ending” leads into the group’s uplifting title song “We Came From Space,” expressing optimism about the promise of humanity’s advent. But the next song, the Beatlesque “Vivid Colours,” jumps into social commentary about deceitful leaders and fanatical followers. The progressive ska-driven “All Rights Reserved” laments how ideals become corporatized and corrupted. The high-powered, Deep Purple-toned “Business As Usual” ponders a troubled modern-day mediascape where divisions are amplified, mob mentalities rule, facts are ignored, false prophets profit, and logic is thrown out the window. Launched by Bill’s prominent keyboard riff, “Eye to Eye” observes the dehumanizing effects of digital communication, from cyberbullying to diminished human interaction. We Came From Space offers contemplation and introspection on the comfortably numbing “Pieces of the Sky,” while a captivating, almost vocalizing synth riff hooks us into the modern-toned love ballad “Easily Led.” These songs are masterfully crafted, from

their alluring melodies and arrangements to chord and tempo shifts, full use of stereo separation, varying emphasis between instrumental components, clever use of effects and soundbytes, and more. All four musicians excel in their respective roles, displaying strong singing voices and vocal personalities, plus precise instrumental execution. Self-recorded, produced, mixed and engineered, this album sounds remarkable from start to end, with everything coming through crisp, balanced and full. While You Were Away offers a superb listen, and a rewarding escape for fans longing for that “headphone album” to immerse themselves for hours at a time. Excellent stuff! (The album can be obtained through the group’s website, www.wecamefromspace.net.) JAE SMITH – MURMUR (no label) Jae Smith has made his presence felt in the west-central PA music scene during the past two decades as a member and ringleader of several bands, and has evolved as a solo artist, singer and songwriter since 2013. Jae’s acoustic debut solo album, Murmur, introduces us into his musical world and persona. Jae displays an eclectic style that taps flavors spanning from folk and Americana to alternative rock roots, especially from the 1990s. Strumming acoustic guitar and demonstrating a gritty singing style, Jae shows a knack for solid song hooks and melodies, and observational words about the ups and downs of life and love. Memories and laments provide prominent themes over the album’s 14 tracks; reflections of a failed relationship haunt the lyrics of the album’s first song, “Ghosts,” while “Highland Haze” suggests to stop dwelling on past mistakes and that life goes on. The struggle and desperation from blue-collar life surface on the hard-driving “Time Clocks and Tombstones.” A domestic squabble prefaces “My Puppeteer,” as Jae weighs the bliss and stress of relationships, while moving forward from relationship woes provides the theme of “Weeks or Months.” Other numbers are more upbeat, such as Jae’s ode to a free-spirited gal in “Tragically Beautiful,” and his wordplay-savvy “Miss Communication” which could suggest a devious lady, devious news media or both. Jae also peppers four acoustic instrumentals through the course of the album: the wistful yet cosmic “Laying in a Hammock (A Space Odyssey),” “The Dawn of Aurora,” the tranquil “Secret River” and the gentle “”Eris’s Lullaby (Goodnight Autumn),” which ends the album. Jae flies without a net here, with his voice and guitar doing the talking; his performances are sincere and his lyrics intriguing and thoughtful. Self-recorded, Murmur sounds crisp and full, with Jae’s voice sounding clear and intelligible, and the mix is basic and to the point. Jae Smith’s Murmur provides a satisfying listen as it offers a snapshot of this artist’s musical mind and personality. (You can obtain the album through online music and streaming platforms.)
