Out & About continued.... I was so awed by the sound in the Trust Performing Arts Center, that I decided to go back, this time Nick Andrew Staver and his band were on stage. These guys were also a 3-piece that pulled you right in with their stage presence and energy. They had a great mix of blues and rock n-roll and they ZHUH URFNLQ¡ WKH VWDJH DQG WKH FURZG DW The Village. , KDYHQ¡W been to The Village in a long time, it was nice to stop by and pay them a visit. 6LQFH , ZDV VRUW RI Ă \LQJ EOLQG DW WKLV )HVWLYDO EHFDXVH , UHDOO\ GLGQ¡W NQRZ DQ\ RI WKH DFWV JRLQJ LQ WR LW EXW DV , DVNHG around who do I want to make sure and see?, the one answer I kept getting was Toronzo Cannon. The Elk’s Lodge is a big room and that place was packed from the front all the way to the back and out the doorways! I eventually weezled my way to the front so I could get a closer look and snag some pictures. Toronzo’s PXVLF LV GHĂ€QLWHO\ HOHFWULI\LQJ 1RW RQO\ LV KH DQ absolutely amazing singer, guitar player and overall entertainer, but his organ player was out of this world. I was thrilled that ZKHQ , Ă€QDOO\ PDGH LW WR WKH IURQW , ZDV MXVW LQ WLPH IRU D QLFH keyboard solo, so totally amazing!! These guys were wowing everyone in the crowd. At one point he held up two boxes of CDs that were just released, $20 each. He handed them to two women that introduced themselves as nurses.. in less than 10 minutes they were back with empty boxes and wads of cash! 7KHVH JX\V ZHUH WKDW JRRG ,¡P VR JODG , FDXJKW WKHLU VKRZ WKDW ZDV VRPH RI WKH EHVW PXVLF ,¡YH KHDUG LQ D ORQJ WLPH The next quick stop was at Federal Taphouse for Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats. That Miss Melanie GHĂ€QLWHO\ KDV VRPH SLSHV RQ KHU 0DQ WKDW ZRPDQ FDQ 6,1* 3OXV \RX FDQ tell her band are very seasoned musicians that know their way around their instruments. I kept expecting to be disappointed by one of the performances but every one was top notch! I attempted to go to The Chameleon for Tinsley Ellis. I PDQDJHG WR JHW LQ WKH GRRU EXW WKDW¡V DERXW DV IDU DV , JRW $OO levels were packed with people there to enjoy the show. There was no way I was squeezing my way up to the front to snag D SLFWXUH HLWKHU 7KDW SODFH ZDV SDFNHG LQ WLJKW )URP ZKDW , could hear it was worth the crowd. Tinsley was wailing away on a superb guitar solo which was awesome, but his vocals had this special power behind it that it demanded attention. Wow, what a show!!! Since The Chameleon was so packed I decided to go check out The Ware Center again. Morgan James was on stage belting out some absolutely amazing music. With the press pass it was nice to be able to just go down to the front and get up close and get some good shots. The Ware Center is another YHU\ FRRO YHQXH ,W LVQ¡W WRR KXJH VR LW¡V VWLOO YHU\ LQWLPDWH EXW yet it is big enough with great stadium seating so every seat in the house is a great one, the sound is also amazing. I was heading back to my car to call it a night and I saw how packed Tellus360 was so I decided why not have one more stop. I headed in and heard the tail end of the Ursula Ricks Project. Ursula has been singing up and down the East Coast IRU RYHU \HDUV +HU YRLFH LV XQOLNH DQ\WKLQJ ,¡YH HYHU KHDUG You can just hear her soul pouring out of every word. Very powerful and entertaining all at the same time. I always thought Tellus360 was just a little coffee shop‌ KDKDKD %R\ ZDV , ZURQJ :KDW D FRRO YHQXH :KHQ , Ă€UVW got down to Lancaster there was a line wrapped around the building of people waiting to get in. I tried using my press pass DQG P\ 9,3 EXW QHLWKHU SDVV ZRUNHG LW ZDV 3$&.(' ,¡P JODG , GLGQ¡W JHW LQ WKHQ EHFDXVH HYHQ ZKHQ , FDPH EDFN WKDW SODFH was still CRAZY! There is a stage out front where Ursula was playing, and then they have a whole other huge room in the back where there was another stage and a ton more people! You had to go down some steps back a hall and up some more steps to get to the other room. Honestly it was a bit overwhelming and I honestly think I eventually suffered from either claustrophobia or some crazy panic attack. I have been going out IRU \HDUV DQG ,¡YH QHYHU H[SHULHQFHG DQ\WKLQJ OLNH LW , MXVW FRXOGQ¡W EUHDWKH DQG NQHZ , KDG WR JHW RXW DQG JHW VRPH DLU ,W was a bummer because the Johnny Cash Jam was just getting started and it sounded like tons of fun! Once I got outside I felt a lot better and I decided it was time to call it a night.

Congrats to Rich Ruoff and his team for organizing an amazing event. There were over 70 artists, (some played twice) so you had over 90 concerts to choose from. This was the 3rd year for the Lancaster Roots & Blues, and let me tell you, they know what they are doing. There were plenty of staff wearing special shirts everywhere to help you get around the town. There were 11 venues that were within walking distance of the Convention Center. So if you stayed at the Marriott, you would park your car and forget about it for three days RI DPD]LQJ PXVLF DQG HQWHUWDLQPHQW ,¡P WHOOLQJ \RX WKDW¡V ZKHUH ,¡OO EH QH[W \HDU 7KHUH ZHUH HYHQ 0DVWHU &ODVVHV WKDW , GLGQ¡W HYHQ JHW WKH FKDQFH WR FKHFN RXW DQG ,¡P VXUH DOO RI the brunches (there were 5 to choose from), were amazing!! Their stage presence is impressive and their vocals are killer! The Ryan Alan Band... Rockin' the Country Article & photos by Rachel Rocks

Ryan Alan The Ryan Alan Band is an emerging country rock band based out of Central Pennsylvania. Ryan was originally a solo artist, making a name for himself and quite a few people kept telling him he could do a lot more, and play at more venues if he had a band backing him, so hence the reason why The Ryan Alan Band ZDV IRUPHG ,W WRRN KLP D ZKLOH WR Ă€QG DOO RI WKH right pieces for his band, but now he feels like he has a pretty good line-up, even though they are once again in search of a bass player. Their current line-up is obviously Ryan Alan on lead vocals and guitar, Matthew “Doughboyâ€? Danner on drums, Lee Straw, “Butchâ€? on rhythm guitar, and Corey McCartney, on lead guitar. Doughboy has been with the band since May of 2014. He quickly brought in his friend Butch for an audition as a rhythm JXLWDU SOD\HU DQG KH ZDV D SHUIHFW Ă€W Jason Bruno was their lead guitar player for a while and helped the band become what it is today, but he has moved on to play with Redneck Ruckus. Luckily Corey McCartney ZDV Ă€OOLQJ LQ DV D ´KLUHG JXQÂľ IRU a band in the Summer Concert Series where Doughboy and Ryan were running sound, they recognized his talent and asked him to come in for an audition. Corey didn’t think he was going to have enough time to play with The Ryan Alan Band, but after some twisting of his arm, and some sweet talking to his wife, Corey was convinced to give it a try, and he’s been the perfect addition in contributing to the music and sound of The Ryan Alan Band. Rob Keiser was their original bass player, who also helped get The Ryan Alan Band moving in a forward direction, unfortunately he had to move to Maryland and could no longer be part of the band. Ben Kreiger stepped up and helped out on bass for a while, but he recently left the band, so they are

once again in need of a great bass player. They need someone who is willing to be a team player, who wants to pursue music as a possible career, and obviously must love country music. Another key aspect is you must be ready to treat your band like family. Family is a huge part of their success and how they continue to do what they do. When they can, they include the family in practices, recordings, gigs, etc., the family that plays togethHU VWD\V WRJHWKHU :KLOH WKH\ DUH ORRNLQJ IRU WKDW SHUIHFW Ă€W WKH\¡YH KDG VHYHUDO EDVV SOD\HUV Ă€OO LQ IRU JLJV The Ryan Alan Band wanted to give them a quick shout out for helping out whenever they could: John “Ramboâ€? Lebo, Mike McCartney, Phil Cannizzaro, Colt Wilbur, and Cobrette Bardole. All great bass players but they all have their own projects they are involved in. 2Q -XO\ VW WKH\ UHOHDVHG WKHLU Ă€UVW (3, ‘I Raise My Glass’. It was self-recorded in their home studio and then sent off to Cobrette Bardole at CBM Studios to be mixed DQG PDVWHUHG 7KH VL[ VRQJ (3 KDV EHHQ D KXJH KLW ZLWK WKHLU fans. Ryan does most of the writing himself and then brings the songs to practice where everyone tweaks their parts to make the songs complete. Ryan actually just wrote another song on

with them somewhere at the venue. They have a couple of big shows coming up; they will be opening for John Pardi at The Chameleon Club on April 22nd as part of the Launch Music Conference. They will also be playing June 4th for Tailgates R Us before the Luke Bryan show at Hershey. Another huge event to mark your calendars for is the 4th of July Throwdown at the Dela-Ches Fishing Association in Palmyra. It’s actually happening on July 2nd and starts at 12 noon, and you can even camp overnight, it’s a family friendly event with Fireworks, food, and fun! You must be a member or an invited guest, so please contact the band if you’d like to go. The Ryan Alan Band knows they wouldn’t be a band if it wasn’t for their families and their fans support through this process. They actually have a 5th member of the band and that would be Bryan Chandler, he is their Finance Manager, 6RXQG (QJLQHHU DQG DQ\WKLQJ HOVH WKH\ QHHG KLP WR EH $ORQJ with him, also came his wife, Angie WKH ´VWDJH 0RPÂľ DQGÂľ 0HUFK 0DLGHQÂľ 6KH QRW RQO\ NHHSV WKHLU 0HUFK ORRNLQJ DPD]ing, but she also is constantly meeting everyone’s needs for water, meds, etc.. They really don’t know what they would do without her or Bryan. A few other ladies that have helped along the way are Melissa McGruther, Mandy Warfel, and Anna Reber. Another very special lady is Sarah Danner, Doughboy’s daughter. At any

Doughboy their drive down to Florida for a country music conference. That song is still on his Notepad in his phone, but will hopefully make it to the stage soon! They are constantly writing more originals. They are heading back into the studio in May of this year, and they will hopefully be recording at Springwood Studios in Maryland. Most recently The Ryan Alan Band MXVW UHOHDVHG WKHLU Ă€UVW RIĂ€FLDO PXVLF YLGHR IRU WKHLU VRQJ “(To You) I Raise My Glassâ€?. They released the video with a big premiere party for all of the friends and fans at the Halifax Fire Department. I was lucky enough to be there for this special event. The video IHDWXUHV TXLWH D IHZ RI WKH +DOLID[ Ă€UHPHQ DQG ZRPHQ EHFDXVH the main concept of the song is to thank all of the people with Civil Service jobs for doing what they do, always putting their lives on the line for the rest of us. The video was recorded by Jess and her team at Springwood Productions. They put a lot of sweat and even some tears into this project, but it really turned out great! They even had some cool drone footage thanks to Seth Lenker. The response of the video has been overwhelming. They really didn’t know what to expect, but their fans have gone above and beyond sharing their video everywhere! Social media is an amazing beast. Hopefully this video will be the step they need to break out of the area and get noticed in other markets. They’ve already been given the opportunity to open for the Zach Brown Band, Brian Davis, and Parmalee. They’ve also played some amazing venues and festivals. The cool part about The Ryan Alan Band is they can play anywhere, big or small, they know how to adjust their show and even their stage to any situation. They’ve played in Nashville at the Bluebird CafĂŠ and The Silver Dollar Saloon. They hope to make it back to Nashville soon and look forward to touring throughout the US and eventually the world. Out & About continued.... ously have mind blowing guitar solos and the amazing vocal harmonies of David and Christian. These originals already have plenty of fans chanting along at every show. Great job guys! My next night started out a little calmer with Element 22’s Jeff and Dave’s acoustic Irish sing-a-long at Chick’s in Hummelstown. I had my friend Kristen out for a night on the town and Judd hooked us up with his special fruity drink that was a big hit. Hopefully he can remember what it was for next time. Jackson’s HVWDWH EHQHÀWV KLV PRWKer and three children, known as Prince, Paris and Blanket. Breaking Benjamin fans are getting a mix of shows this year. The hard rock band has announced another run of acoustic gigs to go along with its U.S. (electric) headline itinerary, co-bill dates with Disturbed. The setlist for the acoustic tour promises that the band will play “new and classic fan favorites.” The acoustic itinerary begins at Lancaster’s Chameleon on April 19th. The Wilkes-Barre band return close to home on July 29th at Pavilion at Montage Mountain co-headlining with Disturbed. Breaking Benjamin UHOHDVHG WKHLU ÀIWK VWXGLR DObum, “Dark Before Dawn”, after the band’s 2010-2014 hiatus. AC/DC SRVWSRQHG WKH ÀQDO GDWHV RI LWV 8 6 WRXU LQcluding Philadelphia and Washington DC) on account of singer Brian Johnson’s hearing problems. Doctors ordered the frontman to stop touring immediately or risk total hearing loss. Johnson claims music wasn’t the sole culprit but that his love for racing cars assisted. “I’ve got hearing loss in me left ear. I didn’t get it from music. I got it from sitting in a race car too long without ear plugs. I heard my ear drum burst, because I forgot to put me plugs in under my helmet. That’s how it happened. Music had nothing to do with it.” AC/DC says the band will reschedule the dates for later in the year and that those shows might include guest vocalists. Johnson was reported as depressed after hearing AC/DC may have already hired a new singer and he still felt like a “hired gun” after 36 years in the band. Sebastian Bach’s spring tour is offering fans “two sets for the price of one.” Select shows will feature the best of both worlds, with an intimate acoustic set as well as a full electric live show. The heavy metal singer says, “We’re going to open up the show with some stripped-down tunes, re-set the stage, and then come back with the Big Guns.” Bach will also release his memoir, “18 & Life on Skid Row,” on June 28th. The memoir is described as “a tale of perseverance, of wine, women and song, and of a man who has made his life on the road.” Road stories include tales of tours with the likes of Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Mötley Crüe, Soundgarden, Pantera, Nine Inch Nails, and Guns N’ Roses. Spring tour dates include: May 17th – Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Soundstage and May 19th – Philadelphia, Pa., Theatre Of Living Arts. Guns N’ Roses have added special guest Alice In Chains on both their Las Vegas dates. Only six shows are currently on the schedule for the reunited Guns N’ Roses featuring members of the band’s most famous lineup – Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan. A fan recently posted an Instagram photo meeting Axl Rose in Atlanta and wished him luck on “those few shows,” to which the singer replied, “Thanks, man, but we’re going to do a whole tour.” GNR fans will have to stay tuned for more dates possibly announced.

Since warm weather has already arrived, it was more of a IRUPDOLW\ EXW ZLQWHU KDV RIĂ€FLDOO\ H[LWHG DQG VSULQJ KDV DUrived. The mild close to Winter 2015-16 enabled me to witness a number of fun live music events in recent weeks, including one lengthier road trip. That road trip was to Mr. Small’s in Pittsburgh’s Millvale VHFWLRQ ODVW PRQWK WR H[SHULHQFH WKH DOEXP UHOHDVH FRQFHUW DQG celebration for former Rusted Root drummer Jim Donovan and his current band, the Sun King Warriors. PA Musician team coverage was in effect this night, as I joined partner-incrime Meredith Kaminek and her cousin Elise to witness this memorable show. Jim Donovan’s daughter, Tupelo, and guitarist Jeremy Levin opened the concert in Mr. Small’s main theatre hall. Percussion thunder ushered in the main event, as Jim and his Sun King Warriors celebrated music from the self-titled “Sun King Warriorsâ€? CD. Jim on guitar and vocals, guitarists Kevin McDonald and Dan Murphy, bassist Kent Tonkin, drummer Joe Marini, Harry Pepper on djembe and Bryan Fazio on congas played jubilant numbers from the CD such as “Oolalala,â€? “Blend Into Youâ€? (including the “Wild Man Shouting Ensembleâ€? on gang-shout vocals) and “I’m Doing Fine,â€? before slowing for one of the disc’s ballads, “Can’t Stop Falling.â€? The group then broke out a cover, Modern English’s “Melt with You,â€? before Jim dug into his former band’s catalog to perform “Back to the Earth.â€? The tempo increased again with “You Got to Believe It,â€? which then decelerated into a percussion interlude while Harry shared a monologue of wisdom about the word “warriorâ€? with the audience. Jim’s children – daughters Tupelo and Ella, plus son Oliver – then appeared on the stage to join in on the percussion, leading to Jim’s own drum solo display. After Tupelo sang lead on D QXPEHU WKH Ă€UVW RI VHYHUDO RI Jim’s former Rusted Root colleagues – Liz Berlin – joined the group to help sing the closing number from the CD, “The Sunshine.â€? into “Love on Me,â€? another song and a version of The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Goâ€? to close the main set. But there was no doubt that an encore was imminent, and after the large audience shouted for “MORE!â€?, the encore party commenced. A community of musicians arrived on stage, as Jim’s kids, present and past Rusted Root members Jenn Wertz on vocals, John Buynak on percussion and Patrick Norman on bass, plus several other musical guests, joined the Sun King Warriors for a version of David Bowie’s “Ziggy Stardust,â€? before guest singers Chuck Olson and Paul Berkobin teamed with Jenn to help send a version of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devilâ€? into the stratosphere. One song remained, as Jim and his Rusted Root family led the Sun King Warriors on an ecstatic, warm and jubilant rendition of “Send Me on My Wayâ€? to send the encore – and this phase of the night – home. The energy and atmosphere of this concert were unforgettable, as the large audience – including Jim’s friends, fans, family, communities from his various retreats and drumming get-togethers, longtime Rusted Root fans and more – elevated this night to a level of pure joy. The night did not end there, though. Following the Sun King Warriors’ performance in the main theatre, Liz Berlin and her group performed a post-concert show in Mr. Small’s upstairs Funhouse. Singing and playing acoustic guitar, Liz was accompanied by sister Katie Berlin on vocals, guitarist Mark Strickland and violinist Megan Williams. Liz introduced and performed a number of her original songs, including numbers written for Rusted Root and her own endeavor. Some of her songs included “I Believe,â€? “Newberry Street,â€? “All I Ever Need,â€? “Little Girl Solidarityâ€? and more. Liz and her bandmates also did some cover material, including Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,â€? 7UDIĂ€F¡V “Dear Mr. Fantasy,â€? a Janis Joplin number and more. Jenn Wertz joined Liz to sing several tunes, including some that both women penned prior to joining Rusted Root. This was an enjoyable and insightful show as well, and provided a gentle cool-down following the main event to cap the evening. St. Patrick’s Day and weekend provided multiple events for area musicians and fans to wear their green, celebrate Irish music, food and drink, and just celebrate. The Professor continued.... musical guests up for joyous renditions of Jethro Tull’s “Locomotive Breath,â€? Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girlâ€? and U2’s “With or Without You.â€? The large audience was then invited to get their dance on as Hotwax – Mike Zerbee, Chris Myers and drummer Mike Crocetti – closed out the party with their blend of dance-friendly rock’n’roll and country favorites. The GDQFH Ă RRU LQVWDQWO\ Ă€OOHG XS DV Hotwax did numbers from Zac Brown Band, Jimmy Buffett, Jason Mraz, Billy Joel, Eagles, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton and more. During their latter set, Hotwax welcomed past and present members of Locked and Loaded to step up for a mini-set with songs from Georgia Satellites and Thin Lizzy, before Strings Radio – Chris Myers, Dan Myers II and Mike Crocetti – closed out the night. The atmosphere was joyous and friendly throughout this party; hats off to the Gallitzin Fire Company, the musicians and the Gallitzin American Legion for again delivering an excellent and memorable night! The Goddamn Gallows brought their brand of musical insanity back to McGarvey’s last month, headlining a four-band bill. Local rockers Xs for Eyes and Railroad City Murder Machines opened the proceedings before my arrival. As I entered, Chattanooga, Tennessee’s Husky Burnette and his band were in the midst of their set. Seated and playing guitar, Husky GHOLYHUHG D JUDYHOO\ JURZO XS IURQW Ă DQNHG E\ EDVVLVW Caroline Crews and drummer Rasheen Isaac. Their style was raw, stomping delta-styled blues-rock, chock full of driving, coarse grooves that kept the large crowd hollering and stomping their own feet. Soon afterward, the Goddamn Gallows unleashed their psycho circus upon the McGarvey’s crowd with a feverish set. My best approximation of the Gallows’ sound for the uninitiated would be a circus of punk rock velocity, southern fundamentalist gospel revival, gypsy music run amok and a touch of Black Sabbath doom. Handling the bulk of the vocal Ă€UH DQG EULPVWRQH ZDV JXLWDULVW VLQJHU Mikey Classic, who brought authority and fury to songs of sin and salvation such as the uproarious crowd favorite “Y’all M-F’ers Need Jesusâ€? and more. Almost worth the admission price himself was accordion and washboard-playing wildman TV’s Avery, whose unpreGLFWDEOH EOHQG RI LQVWUXPHQWDO Ă€UHZRUNV IDFLDO H[SUHVVLRQV DQG

other antics added to the group’s circus atmosphere and had the large crowd of fans cheering frantically. Fishgutzzz provided vocal growls and howls as he thumped his upright bass, while drummer Baby Genius packed the high-velocity beats that powered this crazed stew of sounds. Recently returning to the Gallows’ ranks was Jayke Orvis, who staffed banjo and mandolin this night. Every song the Gallows performed was unique and unusual, featuring anything from dramatic song arUDQJHPHQWV WR IDVW Ă€ULQJ NOH]PHU VW\OHG UK\WKPV JDQJ VKRXWV power riffs, accordion passages and more. It all made for an H[FLWLQJ SHUIRUPDQFH WKDW NHSW WKH Ă RRU LQ IURQW RI WKH VWDJH packed and beer-puddled for the duration. Bottom line: once you experience Detroit’s Goddamn Gallows IRU WKH Ă€UVW WLPH you will not soon forget them. A return visit to McGarvey’s is likely. It has been a long time since I last wrote about Hitchcock Railway in this column; if memory serves me correctly, the last time I saw this group was nearly two decades ago when WKH\ KDG GURSSHG WKH Âś5DLOZD\¡ SDUW RI WKHLU QDPH %XW VLQJHU guitarist Jim Taylor has kept Hitchcock Railway alive and rocking, and I caught up with the current edition last month as they brought their rocking party to The Arena in State College. I also discovered Bedford County bluegrassers Lizzie and the Yeehaw Gang last month as they entertained the dinner audience at Horn O Plenty farm-to-table restaurant in BedIRUG 7KH FRUH RI WKH JURXS ² VLQJHU JXLWDULVW DQG Ă€GGOH SOD\HU Lizzie Yee-Haw and upright bass player Lili Yee-Haw – were MRLQHG WKLV QLJKW E\ JXLWDULVW VLQJHU Jim Meckley of West Virginia-based string band Stewed Mulligan, plus the dual banjo-picking tandem of Cumberland, MD’s Don Annonio and Duncansville’s Jeff Dodson. This was a fun show, as Lizzie and the Yeehaw Gang mixed traditional bluegrass and Appalachian string favorites like; “Worried Man Blues,â€? “Long Journey Homeâ€? and Bill Monroe’s “Blue Moon of Kentuckyâ€? with grassed-up takes on the Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil,â€?
