Post PALM market growth dynamics HOW and Hospitality change AV Install market

PALM analytics - post show - each year, is a good guidance for me on what to expect in the year ahead. Yes! The year is divided into two – BP before PALM and PP Post PALM! I mean this probably is actually true for the pro sound industry! The proactive industry present at PALM 17 [200 + companies, ‘00s of brands, ‘00s of products] present new product, receive orders and PP new market dynamics establish. New distributors are appointed, dealers appointed for new cities, towns. Continuing the momentum of spreading distribution. New equations are set with rental companies, AV consultants, system integrators and actual users. 2017 PALM clicked estimated floor business at US$ 20 million. New Line Arrays is a hot product category each year. It’s amazing to discover innovation in line array design. Size, weight, application features are improvised for pricing advantage as well as defining specifications for niche applications. Another high business product is Sound Reinforcement, also Install sound, a segment which is charged with new auditoria in turn charged with house of worship and education. The last lap into the show is abuzz with excitement among exhibitors on the next killer product from their own portfolio they hope to take the market. This excitement generates from assurance of business driven by robust market demand in India which surpasses all other markets in the world. I am greatly pleased in PALM Technology, your much loved magazine has it on record from none other than John Meyer, Founder of Meyer Sound declaring “India has

International flavour at PALM Conference & Seminar; with Rob Cowan CEO, Point Blank Music School UK and internationally acclaimed and feted sound engineer Resul Pookutty

more concerts than the rest of the world put together!”

This got me thinking and I reckoned - just between Durga Puja and Ganesh Utsav, sound systems employed could exceed a million! This is just two states, then there is the Dandiya dance festival, another ‘00s of ‘000s of dance music. Then there is Holi with DJs, and Janamashtami in North states. Punjab we all know is on party through-out the year. Not to forget the Mad Indian Wedding, which is just another excuse for ‘Naach Gaana’. I realised our pro sound industry is actually having the biggest party ever selling literally in the millions. So back to guidance on the year ahead – Live sound, concert, stage sound segment is going to rock the year ahead. Stage sound occupied 35.5% of exhibit. Exhibit of audiovisual (system integration) product was next at 20.7%. Lighting third highest exhibit product at 13%. Studio and music production 12.6%. The % factor for each segment reflects quite accurately market business dynamics. This issue focus is Install. HOW (House of Worship) stories from North East, like the rocking stage gig’s, strike the imagination as much financially, as opportunity for best practise design and gear. Our edit team led by Smita Rai lined up three such Install stories revealing design trend, AV consultant trend, equipment trend, all trends!! HOW is trending and how!! PALM Technology trends where the action is. Hospitality audiovisual is overall the highest in Install. Chandra Shekhar (CS) to our team contributes a learning guide. Pushing best practises is this magazine prime mantra. Raising the bar in tech and technique. Watch in our future issues AV Install design software. Research and reportage in tandem provides your business with sufficient impetus to drive this segment.

10 yr old DJ Atom – Bass Boy wins DJ Competition. From l-r: DJ KD – Championship Judge, Mother Of Electronica in India - Ma Faiza, PALM Exhibition Director - Ramesh Chetwani, Pankaj Agrawal of Trimac, Nelson Swamy – second runner-up, DJ Atom, Prathamesh Walawalkar – first runner-up, Anil Chopra – Founder of DJ Championship Founder and DJ Reji – Championship Director.

I must remark on the IRAA awards this year achieving probably the largest gathering of sound engineers in India than ever before under one roof. The emotion of winning an IRAA award by the fraternity, for the fraternity, is evidently very meaningful. The entire team performed splendidly in deciding and recognising this nucleus talent which records music that rocks the nation. Recording is an art form. I am indeed proud of the belief and perseverance shown by the fraternity of sound engineers in India. My motivation for PALM 2018 is Make in India. July - August 2017

Electrocraft Purchases AVID VENUE S6L Sound rental company Electrocraft, recently purchased two comprehensive VENUE S6L live mixing systems – a VENUE S6L 32D system and a VENUE S6L 24D system. The purchase was made through Indian Avid distributor, Ansata. Roger Drego, director of Electrocraft stated, “We’ve worked with Leslie and his team at Ansata several times before, and we’ve known them to be a company that has always maintained high standards; be it the

Aftab Khan, FOH engineer of SalimSulaiman great range of products that they represent or the sales experience or the impeccable quality of service and technical support that they render. In addition to the impressive pre-sales and sales experience, they also provided our team with extremely helpful training support. When you invest into next generation technology, it’s important that you work with good people who know their technology and are able to back you up on anything whenever needed. That’s what we opted for when choosing to purchase the VENUE S6L from ANSATA.” The system boasts comprehensive delay compensation feature, customizable Stage 64 racks with I/O, power to support over 300 processing channels with real-time processing HDX-powered DSP engine, Ethernet AVB connectivity across all system components with ability to connect to MADI, Dante, or Thunderbolt devices, option to share the same I/O across multiple networked S6L systems without any loss of audio quality, direct support for AVID and third-party 64-bit AAX DSP plug-ins, and the system’s massive mix bus

The rental company has kept pace with AVID’s technological offerings to the live sound market. Yohann Fernandes who is also a chief audio engineer at Electrocraft shared, “AVID has introduced stateof-the-art technology especially when it comes to their VENUE series of consoles. They’ve always been years ahead of their time and have been game changers in the way live sound mixing was perceived and executed. The same goes with the S6L. Its features - the solid build quality, and the unhinged power and dexterity is unique, while the fact that it maintains the lineage of the previous VENUE series consoles makes the entire process of transition so simple and efficient. For example, anybody who’s worked on an SC48 would find it easy to familiarize themselves with the S6L, in terms of the workflow, features and even in some cases, the layout. The system is faster, efficient and versatile. We were impressed with the system the very first time we worked on it during a demo session. Hence, opting for the S6L was quite a natural decision in many ways. And to experience the complete extent of the S6L’s potential, both in terms of feature sets as well as scalability, we opted to add the 32D as well as the 24D.” Electrocraft have deployed the VENUE S6L 32D system for a few large scale events, one of them being the performance of the Bollywood composers - Salim-Sulaiman at Laxmi Lawns in Pune, which drew an attendance of approximately 10000 people. Aftab Khan, FOH engineer to Salim-Sulaiman commented, “This was the first time for me working on the S6L, and I was really impressed. Familiarizing yourself with the board is quite easy, especially if you’ve worked on any of the VENUE consoles earlier. The system is really adept and responsive, and the wide range of features delivers all the versatility that an engineer would ever need to recreate just the ideal sound.” Yohann affirmed “We were working an extremely tight schedule for this show, and this is exactly where we

experienced how efficient the system really is in terms of setup and sound checks. A quick run through and we were pretty much good to go. Working in action during the show, some key features like gain tracking, really impressed us all. Plus, the systems extremely efficient layers and screens and incredibly efficient DSP engine made working through any scenario quite Electrocraft deployed VENUE S6L 32D system easy. Situated on the highest point in Zuneheboto, the church was originally designed by Mrs. Hunihoto, a local Kohima Architect to seat 10,000 people, but can now house 8500 people, making this the largest church in India. It took nearly a decade to build this leap of faith. The construction of Sumi Baptist Church began in May 2007 and was completed in March 2017, over the course of 10 years at a cost of Rs. 36 crore by a 2000 strong work-

force. It was inaugurated on April 22, 2017. Standing tall and majestic at a height of 1,864.9 meters above sea level, the 166 ft. high structure- Sumi Baptist Church provides amenities such as offices, conference and training rooms, 27 rooms for the sick, a baptism pool, dressing rooms for the bride and groom, and a cafeteria, apart from other Church-related facilities.

marble to sand and to the electronics were brought in by road. Mapping out audio and lighting solutions on paper was one thing, but while translating it into execution, it was a completely different ballgame for Kelvin. “While this project was memorable for many reasons, the travel involved in getting to the site was certainly not one of them!” He says.

Systems Integration Calvin Baker of Toshniwal World was called in as Systems Integrator for this project. Talking about his experience with the installation, he says, “The equipment had to be transported via a combination of exceptionally bad roads and 9-10 hour drives through remote forest areas. Akum Jamir from Crescendo, Dimapur had executed the installation on our behalf. The structure posed to be quite challenging, since it was similar to a 9 storey building. We unboxed about 60-70 boxes of speakers which were then mounted on brackets and hoisted up. Tuning the systems was also a mammoth task. It was fun to watch Venkatesh Vishwanathan from HARMAN climb up to fix the Martin Professional lights! On the inauguration day, there were more than 10,000 people inside, with a couple of thousand people standing outside as well! It was one of the most memorable installations.”

Adamson Expands Install-Focused IS-SERIES with IS10 & IS119 Adamson Systems Engineering launched the IS10 and IS119 installation-tailored loudspeakers at InfoComm 2017, the larger siblings to the highly-acclaimed IS7 and IS118 cabinets introduced earlier this year. “The IS-SERIES puts the technology

Adamson IS10 array. and performance of Adamson’s revered touring products, including Kevlar drivers, into an exterior design specifically developed for the architectural market, offering architects

and designers outstanding audio performance and rider acceptance that blends perfectly into the aesthetics of the venue,” commented Brian Fraser, Adamson’s Senior Applications Engineer and Product Manager. “The IS-SERIES is ideally suited for a wide range of applications, including performing arts centers, live performance venues, sports venues, conference centers, and houses of worship,” he added. The IS10 is a two-way, full-range line array cabinet containing two ND10-LM, 10” Kevlar Neodymium drivers and an NH4TA2, 1.5” exit compression driver. The critically optimized waveguide produces a slightly curved wavefront with a nominal dispersion pattern of 110°x 10°(H x V). The waveguide’s efficiency allows for increased vertical dispersion without sacrificing high-frequency presence in the far field while the patent-pending Controlled Summation Technology further eliminates the low-mid lobing normally associated with two-way line source systems. For ultra-precise impulse response,

the companion IS119 subwoofer is loaded with a lightweight, long excursion 19” ND19 Kevlar Neodymium driver utilizing Adamson’s Advanced Cone Architecture and a 5” voice coil for exceptional power handling. It is mounted in an ultraefficient, front-loaded enclosure, designed to reproduce clean, musical low-frequency information. The grill profile of the IS119 has been

replicated in the rear of the cabinet, allowing for cardioid deployments that appear visually identical from the audience’s perspective. The IS-SERIES cabinet construction uses marine-grade birch plywood and aircraft-grade steel. All IS-SERIES products come standard with two NL4 connections and can also be ordered with barrier strips.

Martin Audio spruces up the sound at Mumbai HOWs First BLACKLINE X system installed at Sacred Heart Church in India Built in 1993, Sacred Heart Church has taken delivery of the first Martin Audio BlacklineX system in the country. Mumbaibased system integrators Zoodio, carried out this new sound system upgrade at the Roman Catholic church in the Mumbai township of Vashi. Zoodio, who have been specifying Martin Audio solutions for around a decade, had been recommended to the project by the priest of the neighbouring St John the Baptist Church, following the installation of a Martin Audio O-Line as part of a major renovation project. (Complete Install details in adjoining box). However, this time Zoodio turned to the new BlacklineX range for the first time. BlacklineX is described as “a classic suite of passive loudspeakers for the modern era” which builds on the heritage of the original, and extremely popular Blackline installation and portable series. Zoodio project manager and coordinator, Dylan Hilton, describes the rationale behind the change of Martin Audio system. “Sacred Heart Church is much wider than St John’s, with its wings extended on one side. The ceiling heights are also different and the reverberation time much higher than St John’s.” He therefore reasoned that the church required the loudspeakers to be much lower and closer to the congregation — and in addition to its suitability, BlacklineX also worked within the budget they were given. “There had been a lot of complaints about the old system as the vocals were not very audible and was quite old and outdated,” said Cleo Pereira from Zoodio. The installation team assessed the challenges of providing coverage for a congregation that can amount to 2,500 people. “The task was to not only cover the centre of the church but also every corner with evenly distributed sound, and we felt that BlacklineX offered best solution for meeting this kind of installation requirement.”

Sacred Heart Church, Vashi Consequently, the company has installed a pair of X15’s for the PA, a pair of X12’s for the wings and two pairs of X8 as delay for the PA and the wings. Fed from a series of choir vocal

mics, acoustical instruments, lectern mic and further altar mics, the new system also needed to set a benchmark for the future. In summary, Pereira said, “The response we have received from the

community has been excellent, and the priest also confirmed that the clergy now really enjoyed delivering the mass, as they could clearly hear themselves speak while doing so.”

MARTIN O-line installed at John Baptist A Portuguese style Christian church tracing its origins back 500 years, St. John the Baptist, is situated in the Thane, North

Mumbai, recently underwent a massive restoration project spanning 18 months, including a complete sound system upgrade.

The older system had consisted of multiple speakers that were spaced along the wall of the church, and neither provided suitable intelligibility nor venue coverage. With the extension to the church (enabling it to expand the congregation size to around 5,000 for Sunday mass), the parish priest had initially requested a demo from another vendor to provide coverage for the growing number of people. “We were not very impressed with the sound,” admits Cleo Pereira, from Martin Audio partner Zoodio, who has been specifying the British brand for the past decade. “Instead, we suggested the Martin Audio O-Line as a brand, since we use it in most of our installs.“ Zoodio’s Dylan Hilton, who also happens to be one of the

Install Sound (Continued from page 34) parishioners, coordinated the project. He set up a demo of this discreet, premium micro line array through Integrated Entertainment Solutions (IES), official distributors for Martin Audio in India. “We suggested that this would do the trick, at the same time reducing the number of speakers required and enhancing the overall worship experience.” O-Line was duly adopted, with Zoodio supplying the components and their team of engineers, technicians and riggers worked on the fit out, to meet Dylan Hilton’s specification, with four sets of O-Line (eight elements per side).

O-Line was supported with Martin Audio’s CDD8 Differential Dispersion

loudspeakers for the delays as well as in the corridors. “The reason,” said Pereira, “was that we had a lot of constraints from the Heritage committee; they wanted an extremely compact system that would not block any of the murals and paintings present in the church and also a system that sounded good.” He also emphasised that this was the first time both the O-Line and CDDs had been used in India. The biggest challenge had been rigging the O-Line as the walls of the church were not concrete but limestone, and so the utmost care and safety measures needed to be taken during

the mounting phase. “The O-Line did a perfect job in reducing the reverberations within the church as the limestone walls had no acoustical properties.” Feeding the system is a combination of six vocal mics for the choir, an acoustic guitar and keyboards, a podium mic for the clergy and three mics on the altar. In conclusion, Cleo Pereira said, “Having dealt with all the sound challenges, and taken proper care to avoid any further issues, Zoodio has brought back the voice of the church once more.” The Parish Priest - Rev. Fr. Allwyn D’Silva is also delighted with the system, which he says provides him with excellent sound quality.

The placement of the loudspeakers had to be done in an innovative manner so as to ensure that the aesthetic appeal of the venue would be maintained while assuring that the projection path of each of the loudspeakers delivered maximum coverage and impact. Ketan and team also suggested appropriate placements for the subwoofers too, so that all the energy would be focused on the dance floor and there would be no low-frequency cancellations. Plus, with the help of the Dbx260, the installation team provided a novel way of controlling the audio level and maintaining optimum audio performance at all times. The management are quick to compliment the installation team. “The pro audio system designed and integrated by Dev Electronics has had a super positive impact on the overall ambience of the venue. The owners are extremely happy with the overall sound quality as well as with the look and placement of the loudspeakers. The entire setup looks neat and attractive, and the performance is absolutely spot on! All in all, The Lord Of The Drinks truly is one of the best sounding places in the city!”

Show Review PERPETUAL Enhancement – PALM Content & Exhibit Features “PALM over the years has been curated, nurturing engagement, equally from the trade as well as from the engineering talent. The philosophy of PALM has always been to develop the ever hungry and eager manpower in India, as much as to build a distribution for quality sound and light. This year the PALM conference hosted some of the leading talent globally. The IRAA is the largest gathering of sound engineers. The excitement of the professional community at PALM is contagious and this is one of the reasons, why unlike any other show in the world, the PALM show has an air of enthusiasm in the aisle. It is not just a trade show, it’s a celebration of sound and light technology.” states Mr. Anil Chopra, Founder of PALM Expo, who continues to lead the show. “ABEC

successfully produced this 17 edition of the PALM expo. We met the challenge to provide an international class show production featuring championships, demos, creative showcase conferences, stage arenas and sound reinforcement. ABEC deployed resources and experience in conducting such an expansive expo covering 27,000 sqm. All the events at the expo were held smoothly with appreciative audiences from trade and creative professionals,” he adds.

bass drums. This focus and clarity enhances the reproduction of program material and makes the most efficient use of amplifier power. This is a result of Outline’s proprietary ‘E.R.P.’ (‘Energy Retentive Porting’) design. Based on the principles of fluid dynamics and successfully applied to the science of controlling pneumatic forces within a loudspeaker enclosure, this unique arrangement of specially-shaped ports ensures an optimum laminar airflow. This reduces internal turbulence, maximizing the efficiency of the transducers and thus allowing more amplifier power to be converted into acoustic energy. Such a design requires high-precision manufacturing techniques, and Outline’s engineering teams have applied some original production techniques to turn an exciting concept into a physical reality. AV INSTALL & INTEGRATION As AV sets new standards beyond traditional applications, ICT-AVSecurity-Consultant - Mr. A.R. Chandrashekhar, touches on the topic of the latest trends in AV installations for the Hospitality segment with LED screens, displays and inter-

AV T

oday there is a heavy demand for customer response – “LIKES” and “SHARES” in the business of Pubs, Lounges, Clubs & Hospitality industry. The customer rating adds a lot of value for future prospect customers. An innovative AV system design and professional implementation in these locations would definitely be a crowd puller. The Hospitality and public entertainment sector known and named for its welcoming nature today finds itself under very modern pressures of media & reputation as well.

Social Media Pressure Hotels, pubs, Lounges, Clubs and other hospitality businesses, including restaurants and coffee bars, are also reeling from very real social media pressure. A seemingly endless number of consumer-review sites online have been raising consumer expectations, sometimes beyond what can realistically be achieved. Much of that is driven by customer experiences with their own AV devices. Social media and the rise of non-traditional, web-based entrants into established industries have evolved their expectations. Customers use digital channels to find and share information and reviews.

All on wall – Visible & Invisible That’s where AV has been enter-

ing the picture, in ways beyond its traditional applications such as television channels in the sports bars and background music in lobbies and restaurants. It’s all about interactive touch screens now. “We don’t want anything

the venue. In fact, many of them might not even be staying there. It’s just about creating the right vibe. Invisible speakers is catching up these spaces, leaving the onlookers surprised and searching for the speakers.

active video now contributing to the overall interior design of the hotel.

First impression – best Impression Video is often the first interaction with the hotel that many guests will have. He’s seeing displays become more

on the floor, all display devices should be wall mount, ceiling suspended and audio speakers invisible”, property owner’s say. “Hotels are starting to take their cues from airports. Everyone wants to touch the screen to get exactly the information they want right then – from menu to way finder. Hotel clients initially requested larger multi-touch displays to accommodate more users and increase the “wow” factor. Instead of a large to very large multi-touch display actually smaller displays seem to be the most comfortable size. It’s not bigger would be better, but integrators and consultants are also seeing LED video walls and micro tiles now finding their way into lobbies and reception areas. That’s also driven by consumer expectations for larger (non interactive) video with higher resolutions, and it’s being enabled by tighter-pitch screens, reducing costs, lower power consumptions.

Lobbies – Invisible Sound Hotel lobbies are for short meetings, business discussion and welcome area for the guests. BGM & Live music is now part of attracting the right people to

numerous and their content more engaging, with applications ranging from their use as greeting points that direct guests to their rooms (which they’ll open using their smartphones), to informational kiosks. Interactive smart display screens “acknowledges” him or her with a welcome message. This has also placed more importance on AV over IP, media servers to manage and distribute that content. Video now contributes to the overall interior design of the hotel. Interactive video is showing up more often in hotel lobbies and other areas, for informational applications such as way finding and event announcements, integrating programs & multi-touch displays.

User Experience Awareness of user experience and nature is normally a strong suit of AV professionals, who know the optimal viewing distances of various-sized displays and the space that a 60Hz sound wave requires to fully unravel. With the concept of BYOD ( Bring Your Own Device) the property owners provide for multi format connectivity including Bluetooth.

Hotel Sound Audio continues to be a key compo-

nent of hospitality, and even though most of that takes the form of background music or audio for televisions tuned to sports in bars, or tube music in reading area, the overall quality level has been on the upswing. “Audio Everywhere” has become a strategy for hotels, even as they want it kept in the background. All of the common areas, such as the bars, the lobbies, the pools will get speakers now. But they’re supposed to be heard but not be distracting. Except, when it’s a DJ playing. Most lobbies and other common areas now will have at least line inputs that portable DJ rigs can be efficiently plugged into. This is part of an industry-wide trend toward making every open space monetary event space. It means installing rigging points for projectors, screens and small lighting trusses, as well, turning almost any space into a stage anytime, if needed. This means that they need full-range speakers everywhere, even areas that just used to get paging audio, like the lobby. Some of those areas also routinely get subs in the ceiling, too. In addition, it has meant more individual zoning of those distributed sound systems to allow greater granularity in where and how loud music is throughout the property. And, that has come to require wireless iPads that let

managers monitor audio in person, everywhere, and make adjustments on the spot. Restaurants and bars that typically aren’t being used early hours, become potential event spaces because the AV is already in place.

Value-adds & Additonal Facilities Hospitality customers are asking that streaming products like Audio Everywhere and Audio fetch be added to interactive video installations, to send streaming audio to personal mobile devices relating to concierge, advertising or loyalty-program functions. They’re also being used in hotel workout rooms to achieve the “silent gym” effect that’s actually bringing millennial guests into those often-underused spaces. Installations in the gym have the ability to individually choose the audio and the methods of connectivity.

AV Meeting Culture As video displays become more ubiquitous and integrated into the hotel guest interface, they could also pose for a larger issue. Hotels wanting to have their video displays more seamlessly integrated into hotel properties’ architecture also reflects a desire on

the part of meeting planners who want venues to look more polished, without AV components simply wheeled in for events. That could become a challenge for the rental companies at some point. All AV, including that used in event and meeting spaces, is trending toward greater transparency. Users expect it to do its job efficiently and effectively and without making its presence overtly felt. It works but you don’t notice it’s there. The screens are permanently on the walls, and [installed] LED is replacing projection screens.

Banquets & DJ During live event, banquet bookings and DJ the audio level s in the room and lighting plays a major roll for applaudes. Today the concept of “Digital Ceiling” is on its way entering the niche market. Integration of AV, IT, Security systems, BMS, Lightings & Controls, all over IP platform shall be the future. Products and services are already available for AV over IP, and SDVoE (Software Defined Video over Ethernet). A.R.Chandrashekhar ICT-AV-Security-Automation Consultannt cs@anuvinconsultants.com

I am surely recommending Harman to others!” Kelvin asserted, “What was memorable was the opportunity to work on a project of this scale, with a group of amazing people who had a vision they wanted to fulfill now, and leave it as a legacy for the future.” Sunil Karanjikar, Sr. Manager - Application Engineering at HARMAN International India felt that:“Working on this project was an uphill task (pun intended). Kelvin Ashby King is extremely particular with the way an install is executed. He has a great ear for music and knows exactly how a place should sound once he has designed it and imagined it in his mind. With 58 Loudspeakers mounted at different levels across the building, we had to design the Amplification and DSP is a way that we could exercise maximum control over the system to be able to time align every Loudspeaker and ensure coherent localization of the source. The Dome Structure at a height of almost 160ft. meant we have to keep individual Loudspeaker levels in control, while providing even coverage and maximize

The structure posed to be quite challenging, since it was similar to a 9 storey building direct sound across the venue. We also managed to add a fair bit of color to the inside of the building and altar with the Rush by Martin series of LED PARs. The PARs also provide ambient and reading light to the congregation sitting under the dome since conventional lighting fixtures would not be able to provide the same intensity considering the physical mounting distance. The entire Audio Lighting Video and Control solutions being from HARMAN made it easy to integrate since the same team was coordinating the entire install.

83

This also simplified logistics in the sense that just two Application Engineers from HARMAN could be at site to supervise and commission the entire install across Sound Lighting and Video.” This massive project seems to have opened up doors to more such colossal ventures in the House of Worship Segment in East India. HARMAN Professional has already been recommended to an upcoming 12000 seating capacity church in Dimapur. PALM technology will be sure to cover this story after the project has been completed. Studio Analogue Pramod Chandorkar

- Founder, SoundideaZ Academy

Recording & Microphones Chandorkar offers expert tips on achieving a good recording with details about room dynamics, good microphones and their placement, and more.

Part 2. Recording Duff and Dhols Indian percussions have a large variety of sounds. We have these sounds changing as per the region they belong to. For example the Dhol, which while played in Maharashtra, sounds completely different than the Dhol, we hear from Punjab. Though both the instruments are called Dhol but the construction, skins and style of playing varies. Its important that we should understand the style with which a specific instrument is being played before we decide to record it. As a recording engineer you should take effort to spend some time listening to the raw sound of the instrument when the musicians are doing rehearsals. Unless you know the raw sound well its difficult to get a good-recorded sound. Instruments played by sticks like Dhol, duff, Chanda, Tasha etc. are very loud in nature. First we should identify the nature of the sound like a Dhol is used to create the low energy with an attack on the hit or the Tasha is used for the rattling sound in the high Mids. This information helps us to decide the kind of microphone we should use for recording them. One important tip I would like to share is you will never get the right sound of these instruments if you end up doing a spot micking to them. These instruments are loud in nature and they need room for them to sound natural. I remember that for one of the popular song, we ended up recording 10 dhols and Tasha in a silent space, which was open air. That gave us the exact sound we were looking for. If you have a small room with very limited height and you intend to get the right sound from these instruments you will have to be creative to capture the ambience sound while thy are played. In one more session when I was recording them in a small studio I ended up keeping the Studio door open and putting one Mic in the Lobby, which was very reflective and the combination of lobby Mic and studio Mic gave a me a great sound. Bottom line is you should be creative and then there would be no limitation for experimenting. Generally I would place a U 87 almost 3-4 feet away from a Dhol in the center and add two KM 184 on a height to capture the room. For a duff I would use a Condenser Mic at

Recording Backing Vocals (Chorus Sections) Though this was covered in the previous issue, I thought of some more points to cover in this part Good Recording of a group of singers together is a far difficult task than imagined. The most common practice used is to put 2 or 4 mics and let the singers adjust themselves. But it does not yield the best results always. It’s very important to ensure that the totality sounds as a group. To ensure that you should make you’re self aware of the individual tones of the singers in the session. You can get to know that when you attend the rehearsal. You can note the loud voices and specifically voices which stand out in the group. Ideally I would make a male and female voice section separate in the same room then depending on the number of singers decide the number of microphones. Generally with a condenser Mic like AKG414 on a Omni pattern, I would accommodate 4-6 vocals making a circle. If space is an issue you can use a cardioid pattern and place them on one side. When we are doing stacking its important to ensure that the distance from the microphones is changed for each take. We tend to do multiple tracks of the same part of music; during this if you change the vocalist positions and distance from the microphone it will give you a very interesting sound of group vocals. If the part is really high and loud ensure that the singers step back and belt it out. This distance take will capture a lot of room and add life in to a track. Bottom line is again experimenting to get the right sound. Close mics don’t work always. It has to be the right combination of close and distant mics . Also I would never use an EQ while recording. I would want to achieve the tonality by microphone placement. I would use a compressor just to ensure that I am not peaking.

Bottom line is you should be creative and then there would be no limitation for experimenting.

about 2 feet from the top and incase I need to capture the Low sound I would add an SM58 from the bottom with a distance of 8-10”. Keep in mind the phase when using Mics like this.

Recording Strings Section Recording good Strings Can be the Most rewarding and satisfying experience for a Sound engineer. The factors, which affect a good recording, are too many to consider.

Define the Space Figure out where the strings will be in the mix, and the tracking will fall into place. Are the strings up front and bold, or are they providing a backdrop? If you are going for a “soul style” string section, you can place the string overheads surprisingly close to the players, because you may want the heavy harmonics and a sense of “in-your-face.” For classical inspired rock, your power is really going to come from the guitars and drums. You’d be surprised how far you can place the string overheads because the strings are meant to create width and — and not fight with the power instruments. With an orchestra, you will probably have both a close overhead set and a far room capture as you want both power and depth from your ensemble. Figuring out the strings role, and spatial relevance is half the battle.

Microphones Essentially, choosing the mikes is about that which fits the role best. Ribbons and Condensers can both sound fantastic on any string set with the right placement. It’s more about what kind of image you want.

If the Strings are a part of strings in the background, I’m going to reach for a set of ribbons. I want a lot of space, but not necessarily a lot of room, if that makes sense. And that ribbon tone seems connotative of that rock sound. For Upfront Sound, I’m going for some condensers, set as cardioid, because I want those buzzing harmonics. For classical, I want some Omni condensers — a pristine capture with the sound of the hall equally involved. Remember, these are just starting points. You may find that you’re getting results that don’t match up with expectations and that means figure out what you want and making adjustments. Phase is a complex thing when it comes to strings. With all those harmonics hoping around, it’s practically impossible to get a spaced pair to have perfect phase. Perfect phase on a string ensemble of any size is impossible. A spaced pair, even from an imaginary center point, will always leave some strings in phase and some strings out — and the harmonics will alternate between in phase and out of phase. But don’t worry! There’s an advantage to an out of phase capture: a wider stereo image. So how does one get a wide stereo image and keep a solid mono sound? Two ways. One is to set up an XY or ORTF configuration. The sound all reaches the mics at essentially the same time, so you stay safe. Another technique is to use a third “glue” mic. Your stereo pair might never be in phase with the strings, but they can be in phase with a third, omni directional mic. If you place that mic somewhere that seems to gather the whole ensemble sound evenly it will help the stereo pair feel concentric. And, when you fold to mono you won’t lose the sense of evenness of the entire ensemble. Usually this glue mic sounds like crud in solo. It’s meant to be tucked underneath the stereo pair, which is doing the majority of the work. The more glue mic you can get (or conversely less of the stereo pair) while still keeping an acceptable sense of width and tone, the better your mono fold will be. There’s usually a sweet spot that makes everything happy. Finally The Bottom Line Is Experimentation is the Key. Only a good writing can lead to a good recording and eventually a great sounding Mix. Happy recording.

Playboy Delhi

gets a taste of TW Audio

fter a high magnitude success with its first superclub in Mumbai, the city of glamour, the Playboy club is now rocking the country’s capital, New Delhi. The city’s party animals got a major reason to rejoice with the opening of the new Playboy Club (which also happens to be the first Playboy club in North India) at Samrat Hotel, Chanakya Puri, courtesy Gaurav Verma of New Era Feast and Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. The club has wooed patrons with its premium liquor, vintage wines, private dining area, lavish gourmet meals, personal butler services and last but not least - the live music. “Playboy being an international brand wanted a great sounding system that could cater to their functional and performance needs. Acoustic Arts was called for discussions and performed a demo for the promoters. Sidharth Chhibber and his team were involved right from the beginning when the venue was first acquired for Playboy club,” said Krishna Singh of TW Audio

India who led the installation along with the brand’s distributor, Acoustic Arts, New Delhi. “The audio system needed to be capable of high SPLs for DJ sets, but needed to be flexible enough to cater for live performances on occasion. We were briefed by the owners, PB Lifestyle Limited, on the requirements for each area of the club. First on the list was the elevated stage over the bar area. This is the position both DJs and live performers inhabit to mesmerise the audience. With the stage located at the top of this triple height venue - 40ft high in total - it was imperative that the stage area was equipped with proper and powerful loudspeakers to ensure optimum sound coverage,” explained Sidharth. Acoustic Arts selected the T24Ns, two per side on top of each other. The upper T24Ns are equipped with a 60°x 40°horn and the ones underneath are the 90°x 50°version. 6 x S18 single 18-inch subwoofers - three per side - as well as 2 x BSX dual 21-inch infra subwoofers, add plenty of sub sound to the system.

“The Playboy is a brand known for its flamboyant entertainment and clubbers can now experience the true Playboy experience in Delhi,” continued Sidharth. “I think the owners were looking for the ultimate sound system - as per international standards - and they

had shortlisted a few brands in advance. With our presentation and demo, I think we were able to convince them that we were their best option.” “The audio set up at Playboy club in New Delhi is something that hasn’t been experienced on the clubbing circuit before. International artists such as Christina Novelli and JP Candella, to name a few, have spoken highly about the TW AUDiO system. With the audio set up installed, it brings a whole new level of experience to the clubbing circuit in India,” says Gaurav Verma. In addition to the main stage PA,

86

Acoustic Arts also supplied and installed 2 x M8 and 2 x M10 as fills for the central area around the bar, to ensure evenly distributed sound. A further 2 x M10 are used in the VIP area - which is located on level one - and another 4 x M8 were specified for the balcony area overlooking the dancefloor. A separate VIP area - away from the main dancefloor - has been kitted out with 4 x M10, but this time with the addition of 2 x B30 subwoofers to extend the low frequency in this area of the club. It is used primarily for exclusive VIP parties and if desired the partygoers occupying the room can play their own music, independent of the music being played in the main club. Powersoft was chosen as the amplification partner. “All the amplifiers are controlled and monitored via Powersoft’s Armonia Pro Audio Suite software, which allowed us to optimise and commission the system easily,” explained Krishna. Sidharth summed up his thoughts on the project: “We’re delighted to have been involved in this project and extremely pleased with the results achieved. Playboy is a global brand and I’d like to thank the owners for choosing our equipment and our principals for the exceptional support they provided.”

Stage Market Report

The Big Stage by AKhil Varma – Project Head, PALM Expo

M

ore than 50% of India’s population is below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years. Considering the demographics, it is given that the Media & Entertainment Industry is set to bloom. In the last five years, entertainment events have witnessed huge followings. Be it big scale EDM festivals like Sunburn and EDC with a heavy international line-up, or local bands performing in unchartered territories of the country, or be it college festivals, audience numbers indicate that entertainment events are today drawing in more diverse and deeply engaged audiences.

Tuning in to music festivals A great amount of Indians are now tuned in to international music, dance festivals and even stand-up comedy acts for that instance, and entertainment events have gradually evolved into money-spinners for organizers. Young audiences today, comprising largely of executives, professionals and students are earning a lot more than they did a decade ago and the desire for experiential entertainment has driven this lot to the live stage. Moreover, this trend is true of not just the top cities but also tier 2 and tier 3 centres, which have gradually warmed up to the idea of music events and gigs as the ultimate entertainment option.

Statistics The organized events industry in India had grown to a staggering Rs. 4,258 crore in 2014-15, marked by heavy footfalls. Continuing its upward journey it is expected to touch Rs. 5779 Crores by the end of 2017, which is close to a growth of 15%, as per a study by Ernst & Young. Stage events drive investment into stage equipment and technology. This surge in events has given a major impetus to the professional audio, lighting, AV and staging solutions industry in India and this is reflected

July - August 2017

by the huge investments being made by the Music industry into high-end pro audio equipment. Major Sound rental companies are today increasingly seeking the best quality line arrays, FOH consoles, microphones, speakers etc. in order to accommodate the demanding technical riders by International artists performing in India. High quality lighting and truss is required for setting up the perfect stage. Debuting in India for the first time in November 2016, the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) was supported with technical reinforcement that included an L-Acoustics K2 loudspeaker system, over 15,000 lighting fixtures and approximately 7,500 sqm of LED screens. The sheer size of these concerts

number of sound rental companies & equipment dealers in a number of these cities. It has now become very easy for all the smaller cities to cope up with the equipment demand. These rental companies and dealers have everything that is needed for even a big scale stage show. Some years ago the equipment would have to be transported from major metros but today the vendors in the tier II and III cities have all the required inventory. Manufacturers of Pro Audio & Lighting equipment are one of the most sought after today. The increasing numbers of dealers of Pro Audio – Lighting Equipment & Rental companies in these cities, have been a major source of encouragement for these manufacturers and distribu-

warrants a massive inventory which has in turn propped up the several Sound & Light rental companies in the country. In addition to concerts and dance festivals, major sporting events like Pro Kabaddi, IPL and Pro Wrestling league with grandiose design and equipment requirement have provided a further push to the rental companies to purchase larger number of equipment to keep up with increasing demand.

Increase in dealers and service centers in Tier 2 & 3 cities The substantial increase in the number of smaller local stage events in Tier 2 & Tier 3 cities of India has resulted in a significant growth in the

tors to further expand their presence. Many major players like Harman, Sennheiser etc. have opened up service centers in these cities.

Challenges The industry is changing faster than ever before and the stage market in India is evolving and growing, but at the same time it is tiding over some grave challenges. There is an inconsistency when it comes to the ticket revenue earned by mainstream stage events. When compared to International events, the average ticket price paid by attendees in India is considerably lower, despite full-house audience for certain events. This has mandated event organizers to depend on corporates for sponsorships, which is not always

88

viable. Like in western countries, India would need to work out a formula wherein the major revenue of a mainstream concert or music festival would be derived from gate money. The need for skilled manpower when it comes to implementing large scale events is imminent. For instance, number of institutes providing formal training in Lighting Design is next to zero. Hence, the number of personnel with complete knowledge on executing a particular job is on the way down. Support from the Government for events can also be seen lacking, prime example of which is the lack of a single window clearance in obtaining permissions. Strict restrictions when it comes to time limit of concluding the event and unjustified regulations with regards to the decibel level allowed, also dampens the success of the event, thus discouraging increased attendance. Certain controlled relaxation when it comes to these regulations, can go a long way in encouraging the event organizers in putting together more events and bringing more international artists to the country. This will encourage more attendance and will contribute to increasing ticketing sales consistently. Attendees pay a hefty amount on tickets only when they are assured of great artists at an equally great venue. The number of world class venues in the country is severely lacking. In conclusion, the Indian Stage Market always has showcased great potential, a promising market which somehow has not been able to grow in stature and show consistency as compared to the markets in Europe and The Americas. Its upto the stakeholders in the Industry to come together and work towards overcoming these challenges. Overcoming these challenges, brings more stability & growth to a long chain of members involved - event companies, rental companies, dealers and distributors, manufacturers and a large number of workforce which will be employed in executing these events.

M-Audio launches BX-D3 Series monitors M-Audio have announced the introduction of two new studio reference monitors, the BX5-D3 and BX8-D3. Driving the low-end and midrange, BX5-D3’s and BX8- D3 are rigid and light weighted, delivering transient response whilst negating unwanted “cone breakup”. BX5- D3’s treated silk dome tweeter provides the ideal combination of low mass and the absence of audible resonances that plague conventional tweeters. Together, the BX drivers deliver critical detail, nuance and dynamic accuracy, for mixes to have the veracity and transparency that the user demands. With M-Audio’s BX5-D3 and BX8-D3 have a rear- mounted bass port, meticulously engineered to the exact length and diameter, resulting in deep, defined bass response

Tamil Teri Maa Had the privilege of mixing the FOH for AR Rahman’s ‘Netru Indru Nalai’ Wembley Concert last week not by choice but by substitute, when the visas don’t make it back on time. Anyways I have been doing this for all the guys who have worked with me over the past two decades and my role has varied in no ascending order from FOH, Systems, Monitors, RF Tech, Stage Tech, Audio Supplier. On AR’s concerts I wouldn’t mind even being the Backline tech. It was pretty precarious as I hadn’t been to any of the production rehearsals and Mark Thomas was at the helm of Monitorland for the first time; it was like pulling someone out of semiretirement back into the pitch and a rookie at the crease. Like two opening batsmen we braced the occasion. Big shows are always about stamping your authority on the audio production and having total control of every audio parameter from the test & measurement tools, sound systems administrator controls, FOH commandeering & a bit of aural musical creativity. Now here is where this helps, having been in every nook and cranny of his audio production, coming into the show wasn’t like it was an entry barrier and we pulled of a blinder all thanks to a little help from the music director & the legendary Shridhar’s son helping me with the solo’s entries or the names of some of the backing singers. Wembley went like a dream with barely a day prior of PA rigging, alignment and show day’s line test, sound-check into show. So what it’s like doing gigs for the man himself. I guess you put all your experience you have learnt over the years on this gig and every little thing matters. We have always strived for excellence on his technical productions, leaving Wembley with a great sense of pride of our ‘Made In India’ music, whilst I was appalled to hear later about anti-social media cribbing about being a ‘Tamil’ & not ‘Hindi’ concert. Firstly, of all the shows I have done, this hasn’t even occurred to me. Since when do our audiences demand language and ‘Made In Hindi’ is the only acceptable medium or musical instruction. Secondly this whole thing about walking out was one big lie as everyone stayed glued to their seats

or danced in the aisles, I was at FOH and hence a witness! The few who left early were elderly or physically challenged people who wanted to break away from the exit crowds post the concert. A friend of mine interestingly mentioned to me about the expats

from the audiences that you barely can even hear the PA system during the highlights of the concert. Such is the love and adulation this man receives. The News7 concert for Live & TV in Chennai was such a sonic spectacular, we had 168 inputs of his

This reminds me a lot of the snob value they have developed from living in western countries where even the popular musicals on West-End are called ‘Touristy Musicals”. But the highlight of the evening was for me Kalpana’s vocal rendition of ‘Kannodu Kanbathellan’ with such amazing support of the Indian classical musical instruments. That song just left me blown away! Imagine this mans discography of

94

hits are so many that it would practically take him a weeklong concert to complete his “Greatest Hits LIVE”. And working with the composer himself, is always a journey of learning as he has been at every step of the way making the songs. So if it’s the orchestration in Jab tak hain jaan, the bass-line in ‘Humma Humma’, the drums & guitars in ‘Naadan Parinde’ or the piano in ‘Dil Se’ which by the way is something I have discovered. He has changed his set list in all his concerts but I haven’t attended or worked on a single concert without ‘Dil Se’ seems like this song is closest to his heart! We cannot fathom AR’s contribution to “Made In India” the superlatives are in the awards and in the recognition. And to all those Hindi concert audiences for your pleasure, be happy he even made a record like the music for ‘Taal’ which according to me is his ‘Masterpiece’ in your language. Why don’t you make a song in Tamil for the world to appreciate before you even decide to jig to a Latin or Middle Eastern song on the dance floor. I also find it extremely distasteful when people make internet parodies of India’s Global Ambassador of Music whilst these deadbeats who have not achieved anything, could actually spend their time doing some social work or making better music. We have to respect people for their work and contribution to the world of music and this doesn’t mean just the top tier music directors, producers or singers, this also goes out to small resto-bars & clubs where Live music is performed. Everybody’s voice or music has a place under this sun. Being disrespectful just brings us discredit and puts us in very poor light. PS – Whilst all of us fans & colleagues who are standing by him on social media or our blogs, he himself was deeply hurt and wants what’s best for his fans and owes his success to his fans. Humbled beyond words. And Thank You! AR it is a privilege and honour to serve you Sir. Warren D’souza - Founder, Managing Director, & Working Member of Sound. Com

Philips Lighting launches the new Philips VariLite VL1100 LED luminaire Philips Lighting has launched the new Philips Vari-Lite VL1100 LED luminaire, which is a high quality LED moving head spotlight for stage applications. The new Philips VL1100 LED has been designed as a seamless, lowenergy replacement for the popular VL1100 ellipsoidal reflector spotlight, a favorite tungsten moving head fixture for many lighting designers. High quality, high-CRI light output, consistent color reproduction and ‘tungsten’ color shift emulation are therefore key to its design. These characteristics are all delivered by an

exclusive new 3200K Philips LED light engine, which succeeds in making the Philips VL1100 LED one of the first moving head fixture to offer a true alternative to the traditional tungsten source. Entertainment Lighting Vari-Lite segment manager, said: “With this new fixture we have really responded to what lighting designers have been telling us they need. It’s a true refocusing moving head profile, with innovative new features such as the noise-to-output control, but most importantly it continues the legacy of the VL1000 Series, which has long been one of the most specified fixtures for theater applications.” The Philips VL1100 LED uses the same color mechanism as the lampbased version, but the color system has been tuned with the LED light engine to match the original fixture’s color reproduction. To maximize cooling efficiency, the fixture features a new, hybrid system of liquid cooling and forced air, keeping fan noise levels to a minimum whilst maintaining the high quality light output. Colin Kavanagh, General Manager Philips Entertainment Lighting said, “At Philips Entertainment Lighting we are committed to using our resources and expertise to develop innovative lighting products that serve the precise needs of the market. install Imagine this scene. Client: I want to build a house – How Much? Contractor: What would you like to build? How many bedrooms? Any particular style? Client: Don’t bother me with details. Just tell me the budget? Contractor: You decide boss! Client: Ok Done. Rs. 2 Crores. Start tom. What time will your bricks come? Contractor: But Sir ….. Please give me some idea on what to build? Client: Arre – You are the Contractor – you should know what to build. And listen – I don’t want to see any cement bags on site. If you want to use – then use, but cover with cloth at all times – my wife does not like to see a mess. Clear. Now imagine what the building will look like. Any chance the client or contractor will ever end this happily? Lots of money and time will be spent while the client pictures his dream house and the contractor stands around wondering where to begin, just happy he has some work. This in a nutshell seems to be the basis of every install project I been asked to look into. Except in my case the entire building is built. A few token light points have been installed in a few rooms. Nobody remembers the capacity of any cabling. Nobody has ever laid any control cables. And I am told – Now light it! Apart from a very very few projects, why is lighting (and I suspect sound and video) always an afterthought. Even in hotel ballrooms and Theater spaces, the space provided for technical areas is (usually) woefully inadequate. Why are Technical Facilities always an Afterthought?

We enter a vicious cycle. Because of all the compromises we need to make – the project is usually never properly realized. And I sincerely hope that exhibitions like PALM attract builders and owners so that they can see some of the equipment that can enhance their projects and facilities. Hopefully a technical consultant can be hired at the initial stages to insist on the design to include all the cabling, install positions (with load factors calculated) and sufficient place to install a control system. A

I hope we can educate our potential clients that this technology can be easily installed into most facilities for a vey nominal cost. Systems that can enhance every user’s convenience, safety and security.

system designed by geniuses to be managed by simple people. Then the revolution can begin. Waiting for the enlightened owner managers of these facilities that embrace technology – are a huge bag of goodies. I have not seen the heart of these systems – But I am sure we have all noticed how technology helps our new airports and the newer transport systems run. We don’t see the cables, as they been planned for. Well disguised in the brackets and positions around

these massive spaces. I am sure there is an intricate system of cables and switchers that are running below the marble floors to ensure we know where to unload cars, check in and find the closest gates. Without being obvious our passage through these buildings has become so easy. Likewise so many of our newer multiplexes, install and disguise their technology to enhance the movie experience. I hope we can educate our potential clients that this technology can be easily installed into most facilities for a vey nominal cost. Systems that can enhance every user’s convenience, safety and security. Our public buildings are becoming larger and used in multiple ways. Why can’t airport passenger systems be adapted into hospitals, courts, office buildings where it can be used to direct people to the right rooms within the building? Once there, technology can be used to ensure information is shared with clear voice and sufficient visuals to make our experience both comfortable and quick. It is now understood that malls have grown from simple retail into social meeting points and the entire experience is converted to an entertainment opportunity. Perhaps you may have seen the Burj Khalifa tower in Dubai lit with the Indian Flag last independence day. Was that entertainment, experience, social, political? Perhaps it was some combination of all these. Does ‘Edutainment’ convey the idea. New words and concepts will need to be coined. That’s it for traditional spaces. Technology today can define entirely new experiences. Virtual walk through, 3D modeling and video graphics can create a whole new

world of experience and entertainment. We are beginning to see this within museums. It’s only a matter of time before the entertainment opportunity can be commercially implemented. Like all disruptive technologies – these will be slow to implement. Then accelerate at a massive speed. We have seen the velocity of this embrace is usually massive. Video games took a decade to become mainstream. Then in a few short years the industry overtook Hollywood in worldwide takings. That generation of gamers is still young. But in time they will control spends. They will not know entertainment as we know it. They will demand the video game experience in every building they will use for work and play. What we see as entertainment today, may become basic. Interaction will be key. The big difference between movies and gaming is that the gamer can customize its surroundings. He can choose who wins. Will the hero get the girl? And when he gets her will he kiss her or steal her car? We can choose to live in our own worlds. Philosophically that will raise a thousand issues. Social media and social commentators will go crazy defining the NEW World. If you in the technology world that made it all happen, you can look at all that chatter on one screen while the opposite corner of the screen shows your mounting bank balance. 11 QUESTIONS WITH

John Meyer

As John and Helen Meyer celebrate 50 years together and 50 years of innovative audio solutions, PALM technology catches up with John Meyer. The Founder of the Berkeley based pro-audio manufacturer fields 11 questions on his perceptions about speaker system designing, overcoming challenges, current global market scenario for pro-audio and his expectation for Meyer Sound for the next five years. What is your approach to designing a speaker system? I think that sound quality is a given so what needs to be done is to figure out how to configure systems so they’re practical to use for different types of environments. When I start on a design I always pay attention to the space they’ll be used in and also how they interact with each other. Meeting the specifications in small and large numbers is essential.

You have contributed directly to a long list of breakthrough developments that have earned the company 100 US and international patents as well as numerous industry awards. But which of the Meyer speakers would you say is your favorite and why? It’s very difficult to choose a favorite. So many of our products have been inspired by the artists who work closely with us. I think our small mm4xp is an example of a product that was inspired by the artist, Bill Fontana, to use in the light rail system in Lyon, France for both music and announcing. We developed the mm4 specifically to fit within the tight spaces in the stations. The product has evolved into the mm4xp and mm4xpd which is a directional, powered version. I’m also pleased with our evolution of line arrays because they have shown exceptional versatility and sound fidelity. I think the Leopard system is a real milestone in this technology.

The UPA-1, has been one of your top selling products. What do you think made it such a big success? The UPA-1 was aimed specifically to be powerful and small to fit easily into Broadway show sets. It was a huge advance at the time and it was ten db more powerful than anything on the market. We later made it self-powered which increased its versatility and ease of use.

Looking back over your long and illustrious career, what do you think has been the highlight of your career? I’m very proud of the company that I’ve built and the dedicated team that also believes that innovation is an ongoing effort.

You are a renowned inventor, but you are also a businessman per se. How do you balance both? Is it a challenge? As in, being an inventor is it important to give priority to design over financial gains or vice-versa?

Founder and CEO, Meyer Sound

I think it’s important to recognize that you may have strong strengths in one area and weaknesses in others so inventing and developing are obviously my strong points. However I seek help and expertise in other areas of the business.

Your wife Helen is also your business partner. What is her role in the company and what aspects does she look into? Helen maintains the relationships which include sales, marketing, admin, operations and all the things that make the company run. The two of us work closely together on all strategic aspects of the company but we have a division of labor since I handle all of the engineering and visionary work. We are supported by an incredible team of people in all areas of our business.

How do you think the live-sound and install industry has changed globally in the past decade? The industry has changed from supporting bands directly which was originally supported by record sales to the bands making their money on touring itself. Originally the tours were a promotion for records but records sales have dropped with the start of the internet and iTunes etc. So the tours have to make money on their own. So speed and set up time, the amount of equipment and cost of fuel all have affected the way tours are run these days and everything must be done more quickly and more cost effectively. The install market has been more stable and it’s a growing market for us.

Today, Line arrays have become a norm for live sound reinforcement. What do you think is the single most important factor that has led to this wide scale adoption? And what do you think comes next?

I think we’ll see more and more multi-channel and multi-spacial sound systems, more immersive systems so that every single performer can have the sound originating from where he or she is even when they move around

101

I think line arrays have been around since the 1940’s and the “grateful dead” used them in their ‘wall of sound’ so each musician could have his own line array because they only take up vertical space. This helped in all kinds of shows - touring and Broadway - because space is always at a premium. I think we’ll see more and more multi-channel and multi-spacial sound systems, more immersive systems so that every single performer can have the sound originating from where he or she is even when they move around.

What is your perception of the global market for pro-audio products and how does India fit into this global scenario? I think that concerts will continue to grow and my understanding is that India has more concerts every day than the rest of the world combined. So the market in India is huge.

Tell us a little bit about your engagement with the Indian market and what does Meyer have in store for India in the near future? We’re going to continue to work in India because everyone loves music and Indian musical instruments have a huge range of complicated sounds. There’s a spirit and energy in India that is special and exciting and we want to help support it. We recently added Sandeep Braganza as sales manager for the region as part of our commitment to this thriving market.

What is your vision for Meyer Sound for the next five years? We expect the company to continue growing, innovating and expanding into our core markets as well as into new, interesting sound adventures.
