PALM tech focuses on lighting in this issue. A recent study indicated that the global market for programmable stage lighting, which stood at US$1.19 bn in 2016, is expected to rise at a CAGR of 7.0% during the period 2018 to 2026 and increase to a value of US$2.29 billion. India is not oblivious to this growth graph. Desire for cutting-edge technology is at the heart of the lighting industry growth in India and it’s uplifting to see this segment thrive. Top end brands leading the technology curve, like Clay Paky, Robe and Martin Lighting, today find a place in the lighting inventory of many rental companies across the country. As more and more international artistes make their way to India, rental businesses are finding it difficult to survive without an array of intelligent lights in their inventory - a mandate in most big stage riders that deliver specific needs of the designer. PT caught up with Dubai based Indian lighting designer par excellence – Harold Fernandes, who has been lighting up some of the biggest stages in India and the MEA region to find out more about the fixtures adorning his elaborate lighting rigs (pg. 54). It’s heartening to see one of the most experienced (and busy) lighting designers in the country - Atul Sonpal, making a reappearance in the magazine through the Corporate Guest column (pg. 83), albeit after much prodding and persuasion. With consumption and usage exploding and lighting design becoming sophisticated enough to employ massive arrays configured on rigs, its asking too much for the entire portfolio of equipment to be the best (read non- Chinese) as Sonpal asserts. As Chinese lighting continues to make its presence felt, the PT team caught up with Sasha Xiong, Deputy General Manager, Int. Sales Division, PR Lighting, China, distributed by MSS Pvt. Ltd. to know more about the manufacturer’s engagement with the Indian market (pg. 84). Elsewhere in this issue (pg. 80), insights by lighting designer Naveen Deshpande of Mixtape fame, hinge on a positive note as he underlines the tremendous growth of the lighting industry. “It’s safe to say we won’t get electrocuted now”, he quips while also hoping for the advent of the “replica police” in India soon. Though availability of low quality lighting products is stunting demand for branded gear to a certain extent, the market is expected to gain significantly from advancement in LED technology and the shift towards LED-based programmable lighting over the next couple of years. The emergence of entertainment venues across the country (which is showing no signs of slowing down) are augmenting demand for LED based intelligent lighting and smart wireless lighting controls, contributing positively to market growth. Lighting Integration is increasingly becoming a challenge, in that, design and installation standards are vaulting with each new pub/club/lounge bar. This issue reviews one such lighting integration at the Warehouse Lounge in Thane, designed and integrated by the discerning Rasesh Parekh of IES (pg. 76) and boasting of some heavy-duty lighting install with more than 600 LED tubes hanging from the ceiling. Controlling all the LED and light extravaganza at the venue is the Magical Madrix and the Avant-garde Avolites. 11 Questions features lighting industry veteran Pio Nahum, now at the helm of one of the most successful lighting brands in the world – Clay Paky. Hear it from the man himself on (pg. 94). The new horizon seems to be AV Integrated Systems, where distribution majors have also entered the install and integrate projects sector. With complex AV Integration projects spurting up across the country in recent months, PT too has been complementing its live sound an audio production stories with content that puts increased focus over audiovisual integration. This issue features one such integration at JAQUAR, a brand that has become synonymous with designer bathware in India. The company’s headquarters in Manesar spread across 12 acres also encompasses the manufacturer’s first Experience Centre boasting of cutting edge technology. Davinder Wadhwa’s MSS (Projects), who were contracted to bring to life this Experience Centre have raised the bar with this delivery, which immerses visitors with a multi-sensory experience, weaving spatial and interactive audiovisual content and technology into a seamless journey portraying the brands history, growth philosophy and future vision. Full story on (pg. 26). Industry experts and PT columnists, Warren Dsouza and Viraf Pocha, for sound & light respectively, give us an insider perspective on the industry trends and technologies. Go to (pg. 82 & 88), for wise words from the original wizards. After a very long time PT revisited its first love – the recording studio. Our Editorial Manager Ankita Bhadrawale documents Surat’s Studio Fifty-Three story executed by Modi Digital on (pg. 40). While on the topic of studios, we are glad to announce the appointment of well-respected and renowned sound engineer Mujeeb Dadarkar as the IRAA 2019 Awards Director. HARMAN DEBUTS MARTIN MAC ALLURE PROFILE Harman Professional Solutions has introduced its freshly innovative Martin MAC Allure Profile LED Moving Head. Reportedly, the Martin MAC Allure Profile is the first fullyfeatured moving head to combine a proprietary, solid state RGBW additive colour mixing engine, a seven-segment pixelated beam and onboard P3 and DMX controllability that lets users swiftly alternate or mix between control protocols. The overall feature set further includes dimmer, strobe, color mixing, gobos, iris, prism, zoom, focus, pan and tilt. “Until now, there hasn’t been a

truly efficient way to integrate solid state (LED) color mixing into profile fixtures,” comments Markus Kluesener, Harman Professional Solutions sage lighting product manager. “We decided to address this need head on and asked our engineers to come up with a game changer. They came through with an all-new, proprietary, color-mixing light engine that exceeded our expectations for efficiency.” Additionally, the MAC Allure Profile includes a pixelated beam divided into seven individually-controlled, full colour segments (pixels). This gives lighting designers new options for creativity and frees them to expand

in directions they previously may have never considered. The MAC Allure Profile was also designed for extreme user-friendliness with a builtin FX engine for P3 and DMX controllability that lets users swiftly alternate or mix between control protocols. “As we’ve been talking to end users about the features they look for in this segment of fixtures, they can’t get over how much usability we were able to build into this fixture that we were also careful not to over engineer,” adds Peter Skytte, Harman Professional

Solutions tour lighting manager. “The end result is a straight forward feature set that is not overloading the programmer with unnecessary parameters to deal with.”

The RAYZOR 760 is a compact yet extremely powerful LED wash effects luminaire and the first fixture to feature Elation’s brand new, unique TwinkLED system. With a wide zoom range from 8 to 77 degrees, the RAYZOR 760 provides intense and well-defined mid-air beams with over 8000 lumens, as well as an exceptionally wide and even wash coverage. a powerful beam that stands out on any stage. The oversized front lenses create a large surface that is enhanced by the patent-pending TwinkLEDs technology. TwinkLEDs consist of 28 individual white LEDs strategically placed inside the lens itself to create a unique additional

layer of effect, allowing designers access to a fresh and innovative way of creating interest on stage. Fast, continuous, speed-adjustable pan & tilt rotation adds another layer of dynamic effects from this versatile fixture. The RAYZOR 760 is also available in a compact and lightweight weather and dust protected IP65 version, the Proteus RAYZOR 760, for use in any environment and under adverse conditions. The Proteus RAYZOR 760’s multi-environmental IP65 design reportedly makes it the world’s first IP65-rated luminaire with continuous pan & tilt rotation, giving designers the freedom to utilize this latest effect at any event, indoors or out. It offers the identical feature set and powerful output as the RAYZOR 760, allowing you to choose the right fixture for the application without compromise.

14

Its beam is crisp and precise, directing light only where it is intended. Thanks to the SPX filter frame system there is zero light leakage, so no additional masking is required. With reduced fan noise, the SPX LED WW is also quieter in operation than comparable LED fixtures. Reportedly, SPX LED WW uses the same proven, high-precision, highperformance gate and lens sets as the renowned Philips Selecon SPX Profile fixtures, with secure locking shutters, while other lens sets can be used via an adaptor plate. It also employs a Philips Selecon ‘box’-style gel colour holder. DMX connection is via familiar, robust XLR connectors. Bill Richards, product manager EMEA for Signify Entertainment Lighting, says, “The SPX LED WW will appeal where quality LED alternatives to traditional light sources are needed. The conventional profile fixtures still in use around the world will ultimately need to be replaced with low energy product, and we believe this is the best mainsdimmable LED fixture available. It is the ideal candidate for direct, one-forone replacement of existing profile fixtures.”

GLP UNVEILS MODULAR LED SYSTEM GLP has unveiled the modular KNV LED system which can be used either individually or as a composite. Designers can rely on two basic forms: the cube shaped KNV Cube and the KNV Arc – a device in the form of an eighth circle. Reportedly, any combination of KNV Cube and Arc can be combined together to form an infinite level of seamless design elements where scenery becomes lighting and lighting becomes scenery. Each GLP KNV unit houses 25 power pixels and each consisting of a hyper bright white LED for maximum brightness and impact along with a surrounding ring of 16 RGB LEDs for creative effects and powerful backlight illumination. When combined, each module will output an incredible 50,000 lumens. Explaining the design rationale, GLP’s MD Udo Künzler, said, “Presently, all existing strobes and single pixel effects in the market have a defined size and framed housing. The GLP KNV Cube and KNV Arc are the first LED systems with a frameless design for maximum flexibility and independent scaling options. And by combining the two, there are plenty of options for never before seen designs to be created, such as rings, letters, walls, snakes, and so on.” The powerful GLP KNV Cube and

16

KNV Arc are the solution for any creative designer seeking maximum flexibility of an RGB LED fixture and white light strobe/blinder, all within a modular system that provides infinite design options.

Essential Features: • 25 power pixels, each with 1x hyper-bright White LED, 1x ring of 16x RGB LEDs, • Up to 50,000 lm output per module, • IP54 rated, weatherproof design in both versions: KNV Cube and KNV Arc, • Modular system to create individual and unlimited scaling for independent creative designs, • Easy interlocking system and Power Data Daisy Chain, • Different control modes for usage as Strobe, Pixel-mapping or Multilayer mode, with two powerful FX engines.

GLP’S NEW IMPRESSION E350 LED MOVING HEAD GLP has launched the impression E350 LED moving head, a new, supercharged companion to its popular impression S350, in an efficient and optimized package. With an advanced LED engine, the fixture will find favor in any type of showcase event or installation with dynamic, articulated lighting as the centerpiece. Since it offers flicker free operation, with smooth electronic dimming from 0-100%, multiple dimming curves, with no color shift while delivering random and pulse electronic strobing effects it will also find favor in the Broadcast / TV segment. There are many essential features in this compact fixture with its signature baseless design. The high color temperature of 7500K provides a hard edge mid-air effect beam, with bright

gobo projections, while it is also notable for an extremely tight iris and GLP’s motorized 7:1 zoom range (7° 48° ). This creates an even and flat field with a considerable light output of up to a maximum of 9500lm. The impression E350 also houses a CMY color mixing system with separate CTC Channel, along with an 8-facet prism, a light and heavy frost, a tiltable animation wheel, two gobo wheels, a super tight 14 blade iris and 10 slot color wheels. All functions are fully capable of working in combination with one another, making the GLP impression E350 perfect for almost any application. GLP product manager Michael Feldmann, believes his company has produced another powerful and flexible fixture for the Lighting world. “Due to the highly efficient LED

Engine in combination with the great optical system, the feature set and the compact form factor, we anticipate immediate take up by rental companies looking to maximize return on investment in the dry hire sector for events and shows of all types.” He further explained how GLP set the bar high in designing a blueprint tor a luminaire guaranteed to leapfrog the competition. “Our first priority was to get maximum output and efficiency from a 350W LED engine, with intensive 7500K default white, as we knew this would be perfect for mid-size shows or wherever compact form factor and low weight are required. In fact, the E350 outputs up to 9500 lm at

maximum 550W power consumption!” Michael Feldmann stated that due to the high color temperature the beam appears more powerful and hard edged. “With a great combination of break up and midair effect functionality, in a package designed for easy tour handling, it is the complete all-rounder.”

CLAYPAKY UNVEILS SHARPY PLUS Claypaky has launched its new Sharpy Plus, which is billed as “the first true 100% hybrid unit, able to be a perfect beam light and a perfect spotlight”, says Claypaky. Reportedly, Sharpy Plus fits a totally new, top-ranking-performance Osram Sirius 330W X8 lamp and weighs only 21.6 kg (47.6 lb). All its functions are extremely quick. Its body is slightly larger than the Sharpy’s, to house a high-quality optical unit with a zoom that ranges

20

from 3°to 36° . Its minimum beam angle of 3°makes it possible to generate the narrow parallel light beams essential for beam light mode. Its wide zoom range also allows large beam angles, which makes the SHARPY PLUS a perfect spotlight for all purposes. The SHARPY PLUS has two independent operating modes. In BEAM mode, the aerial effects are enhanced by the way the Sirius lamp is made. It is capable of extraordinary power output (over 300,000 lux at 10mt distance), which the optical unit enhances through a marked hot spot. In SPOT mode, the light is diffused in a more even way which means visual effects can be projected with excellent uniformity. Its 3°to 36°(1:9) zoom covers the entire range linearly, both in spot mode and in beam mode. This feature makes the SHARPY PLUS unique on the market. The SHARPY PLUS has no match. With its wide range of effects and high light output, it beats all the lights in the same category and comes very close to those of higher wattages, but with a much more appealing price tag.

ne of the largest equipment inventory companies, nationally, MSS World. is today a holistic 360° event engineering based solutions company headed by industry veteran Davinder Wadhwa. When we talk about the lighting industry in India, the name Modern Stage Service (MSS) has played a pioneering role. Breathing life into the nascent lighting industry in India more than six decades ago was Mr. Chamlal Wadhwa, who made one of the first Indian theatre spotlights and established MSS in 1956. Down the years, the company was catapulted to an enviable position, as one of the most forward thinking lighting companies in the country by his sons. Once a sibling-run business, two years ago Davinder Wadhwa opted out of the family business, taking with him a handful of brands moving his focus more into solution projects. With the advantage of over 60 years of experience and 50,000 shows worldwide behind him, MSS World brands Modern Stage Services Pvt. Ltd and MSS projects today operates like a well-oiled machine. MSS (Projects) provides turnkey solutions, which includes Conceptualization, Technical Design & Hardware to transform experiential spaces like Museums, Corporate Experience Centers, Entertainment Venues and Auditoriums into ‘wow’ environments and experiences. Some core expertise of the company includes - Technical Design Based Services using specialized software; Video Server Management; Show Control; Audio Design; Lighting Design and Precision Implementation We see maximum growth in permanent installations and corporate live events sector says Davinder Wadhwa. Talking about some of their bigger projects he adds, “In the last two years alone, MSS World has

28

already done 40-45 theatres; in Mumbai we have done the Oberoi International school; in Delhi we have done the Jaquar Experience Centre and in Amritsar we have provided mapping and multimedia solutions for the Gobindgarh Fort. 3-D Immersive Mapping is growing more than 300-400 percent every year. People prefer to go in for mapping rather than just lighting because it’s cheap and aesthetically enhances any venue or event and all you need is two projectors.” Mapping is the future he stresses. “We had done the GVK wedding last year using only projection mapping. We delivered five different setups for the venue-using mapping. Abu Jani designed the concept and this delivery allowed us to change the look of the venue, every five minutes, taking the guests through a journey encompassing the beautiful marine life to magical palaces and more.” “Anybody can provide a projector but content is key and that is where MSS World excels,” he adds. Heading the Projects Division of MSS Pvt. Ltd, is Davinder Wadhwa’s son Pratik Wadhwa who focuses on Technical Designing & Conceptualizing Events, Installations and Experience Centers. Some of the international brands that the company represents (along with their own lighting brand – Sunlite) includes Christie, PR Lighting, Medialon, Enttec, Farbe, JBL etc. Elaborating on his vision and long-term goals for his company, Mr. Wadhwa says, “My vision is not to be a master distributor, my vision is to constantly do new things and new kinds of projects. We never call ourselves as System Integrators, we always call ourselves as social colliders. Our vision is to realize and deliver any and every creative idea.”

ELC DEBUTS NEW SIGNAL DISTRIBUTION CONCEPT DMX control specialist ELC Lighting has launched the DLN8GBXSL eightport slave node, a new concept designed “to revolutionize ethernet/ DMX network distribution”. The DLN8GBXSL serves as a substitute for a DMX splitter rack, where all DMX ports are fully programmable as output, input, merge, backup and more, as node ports. This slave node forms part of the ELC GBX Distribution System, of which the dmXLAN switch (GBx10 or GBx18) is the backbone. This switch is the master, and up to 15 slave units can be daisy chained via the ethernet ports. The system supports all open protocols including sACN, Art-Net and ShowNET.

September - October 2018

When connected, and loaded with ELC’s advanced dmXLAN software, the system transforms how DMX can be distributed from an ethernet network. It is specifically tailored for live

entertainment applications where a mixture of data protocols would overload and saturate commercially-available network switches. “The ethernet part stays the same, but the idea is that if you usually have one node, and on each port

of the node you connect a splitter, you end up with a rack where each splitter can do only one thing repeat on eight or 10 ports,” explains ELC’s sales manager, Silvio Cibien. “Ideally, we would like to have the

node instead of splitters, so each DMX port is used for programming, digital patching, the merging that you like, channel by channel. However, this can be very expensive. “Therefore, ELC has created this

34

new system, which allows the user to have a splitter that offers all of the features and flexibility of a node. This means that each port can again be programmed as if it was a node, because in essence it is now a node. By that, I mean that the control and programming are both in a switch. You can programme channel by channel, softpatch, decide what kind of merge; in triple universe merging you can make your own digital pattern, programming each channel of each port. “And because the DLN8GBX8SL slave node is priced at the same level as a good splitter, for the price of a splitter rack you will have a rack where all DMX ports are node ports.”

ALLEN & HEATH, SQ MONITOR MIXING UPGRADE Allen & Heath has unveiled a suite of feature enhancements, designed to make its SQ mixers the perfect compact monitor consoles. SQ firmware V1.3 adds a Listen bus, enabling the engineer to patch PAFL to an IEM system, stereo nearfield monitors or a mono listen wedge, with the option to control the Listen level with the master fader. The addition of an External Input to PAFL, now engineers can enjoy easy communication between FoH and Monitors. V1.3 firmware dovetails with the new SLink card, opening up new possibilities for FoH / Monitor splits and remote I/O, or combinations of either of these with a ME

personal monitoring system. Digital splits are further facilitated by new Tie Lines, connecting input and output sockets without running through SQ’s processing. “Space for monitor desks is often super-tight, so we’re seeing a lot of SQs in monitor world, where their big functionality and modest footprint have won them many friends,” said SQ Product Manager, Keith Johnson. “With

the generous feedback and support of monitor engineers from the SQ user community, we have ticked off a wish list of new and enhanced features

that make SQ the ultimate compact monitor mixer.” SQ V1.3 firmware also adds user permissions, enhancements to the user interface, plus FX control, MIDI messaging and instant value feedback to the soft rotary controls on SQ-6 and SQ-7. The companion V1.3 SQ MixPad app also adds new features, including FX and DEEP unit control, a patching matrix, plus integration with the signal generator and user permissions.

POWERSOFT TAKES CONTROL WITH NEW ARMONÍAPLUS SOFTWARE Powersoft has introduced ArmoníaPlus redesigned loudspeaker control software The ArmoníaPlus simple interface presents a single window with four main views: Workspace, System List, Operator View, and Events. The Workspace is divided into two parts, with amplifiers occupying the lefthand space and loudspeakers sitting on the right. Users can move through four main steps: Design, Config, Tune, and Show, each offering a variety of functions. Once the link function is completed, operations can be carried out directly at the loudspeaker and auditioning different presets becomes simple. Amplifiers can be added directly to a rack, while loudspeakers can

September - October 2018

be grouped together, vertically and horizontally. Arrays of loudspeakers

can also be ‘packed’ together so that when linking amplifiers, an algorithm will auto-select the next item, based on proximity, model and position on the screen, thus avoiding manual errors. Creating advanced groups of loudspeakers offers the possibility of adjusting Gain, Delay, Polarity, and EQ. The new Tune:EQ page allows users to monitor the overall curve applied to every speaker, including groups. A Headroom meter adapts its LEDs based on the

38

limiters of the speaker itself, showing an at-a-glance view of how hard the speakers are being driven. The interface is designed to be free from sub-menus, with every function available via either a rightclick or a hotkey. Each portion of a sound system project can be exported as a “template”, a building block for a bigger system which can be replicated in the Workspace as required. Meanwhile, with the shading function, ArmoníaPlus can reduce the gain and the loudspeaker limiter thresholds coherently, keeping the balance between elements even if the system is limiting.

GENELEC UNVEILS NEW HIGH-SPL MONITORS Genelec has announced the global launch of its two new high-SPL SAM monitors – the two-way S360, and the 7382 subwoofer. Both models are ideal for any professional application that demands high acoustic power or listening at a distance; from large immersive setups in postproduction studios or film mixing stages to play-live monitoring in music production or EDM playback. Housed in a compact, low diffraction enclosure with premium quality Finnish woodwork, the S360 features a further enhanced 10-inch high efficiency and minimal distortion woofer based on Genelec’s Master Series, and a completely integrated extended directivity control waveguide DCW, supporting its 1.7-inch titanium diaphragm compression tweeter. The result combines the neutrality for which Genelec is known, with a short-term SPL capability of 118 dB - with peaks even higher - and a long throw capability that can provide reference quality accuracy even at listening distances of over 10 meters. The S360 offers the benefits of main monitor performance in a condensed form factor, including excellent on-axis characteristics and uncoloured 95-degree (h) to

75-degree (v) dispersion. The S360 enclosure offers versatile in-wall and on-wall mounting options, while down firing, flow optimized laminar integrated reflex ports LIP ensure tight and noise free bass output and are also perfectly suited for use with perforated screens. Alternatively, when the S360 is used in free-standing mode the innovative Iso-Plate effectively decouples the monitor from its base, focusing low frequency output while preventing vibration transfer and air turbulence. Further flexibility comes courtesy of the system electronics, which can be either integrated into the enclosure or positioned remotely. Knowing that the production of good content depends on monitors being correctly positioned, levelaligned, time-aligned and roomcompensated, the S360 offers full integration with Genelec’s GLM software, allowing the configuration, calibration and monitor control of more than 40 channels without the need for external processing. The ideal companion for both the S360 and Genelec’s other large format monitors is the 7382 – Genelec’s most powerful subwoofer to date. Delivering precise, powerful low frequency extension down to 15 Hz, the 7382 houses three customdesigned 15-inch long throw woofers.

Each benefit from the vibration-free environment of a heavily braced fiberboard enclosure, with laminar flow bass reflex porting extending along the entire rear wall to ensure low distortion and compression-free performance, even when the 7382 delivers outputs in excess of 130 dB SPL. “With the launch of the S360 and 7382, we now have a comprehensive range of monitors and subwoofers for all room sizes, SPL requirements and listening distances,” commented Genelec Managing Director, Siamäk Naghian.

“Besides their compatibility with all types of high-SPL music applications, we see the S360 and 7382 finding their place in larger Immersive Audio systems, where the listener by definition needs to find themselves utterly immersed in the experience, aware of every detail. That same precision is at the heart of every Genelec monitor. It is why we believe so deeply in the growth of these exciting new multichannel formats, and why we have produced the S360 and 7382: to realize that immersive potential like never before.”

Edge Duo features a dualmembrane capsule with independent outputs, allowing the signal from each membrane to be individually processed and recombined. This not only means users can vary the polar pattern from within the plugin, even after recording, it also allows the Edge Duo to accurately emulate the characteristic pickup pattern and onand off-axis response of each mic for true multi-dimensional mic modeling. Edge Quadro is a stereo/ surround mic with two dualmembrane capsules and a rotating head. Delivering four channels for independent processing will allow for stereo techniques like M/S, X/Y, Blumlein, and even 3D sound. Users can select a different emulation and polar pattern for each head. The upper head can be rotated noiselessly even while the

PROFESSIONAL FOCUS - LIGHTING DESIGNER

THE LIGHT FACTOR

Interview with Harold Fernandes

A leading lighting designer, Harold Fernandes has been offering creative and technical solutions for live stages for almost two decades and has comprehensive knowledge and experience on some of the most famous stages. Following his recent appearance as lighting designer for the AR Rahman US Tour 2018, PT got in touch to find out how he has gotten to where he is today, and share his perspective of the lighting industry trends and technologies.

H

arold Fernandes has spent close to two decades working with light and designing luminaires. He is rarely restricted in his art. Starting his career by designing simple corporate events, he slowly progressed into large-scale shows like Live / Telecasted Awards Nights, Music Concerts and Festivals, Touring Concerts, Stadium Shows,

September - October 2018

Ceremonies, Special Events etc. He was also involved in the lighting design for the sets of some of the very early episodes of the Indian television game show – Kaun Banega Crorepati, based on the British program, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? His journey in the lighting industry goes back to 1998, when he was a

Technical Sound Assistant at Super Rhythms where he found himself drawn to the artistry behind the lighting of live stages and sets. “I joined Super Rhythms (A Mumbai based audio company owned by Benny Mathews) as a Technical Assistant in Sound. I literally started from down the ranks and worked hard to learn and grow.

54

The company had decided to invest into lighting gear and ventured on to purchase intelligent lights (Scanners) and some other conventional lights. I was intrigued and captivated with the mesmerizing lighting effects, colors and the impact lighting could create during a live show. The ability to change the entire ambience, emotion,

to learn this art. This was the start of my career in lighting and there has been no looking back from then on,” says Harold. Enamored by the lighting desk, he went on to light several prestigious shows and artistes. Highlights of his career include lighting the stage for A R Rahman, Santana, Lionel Richie, Back Street Boys, RED Fest 2018, Etisalat Pro Football League final, IIFA Awards, Creamfields (UK) and Southport Weekender (UK), to name just a few. For those less familiar with Harold Fernandes, he is also the recipient of the TPMea 2018 Awards for Best Lighting Designer in the Middle East and Africa region. “Winning the TPMea 2018 Awards for Best Lighting Designer in the Middle East and Africa region is definitely an affirmation of my hard work and dedication,” he says. After a career opportunity at Dubai based event production company – MediaPro AV presented itself in 2010, Harold moved to Dubai, and has been at MediaPro ever since as Technical Director. “MediaPro believes in employing the best in the business. My role here is to look at the bigger projects across all the branches, not just in lighting but overall and deliver a good visual experience to the client and audience.”

“Light Designing is an art and requires a high degree of creativity, technical ability and resourcefulness. A visually impactful and complete experience is always my focus during a show. However, synergy with other technical departments such as Audio, Special FX, Graphics, and Video is also very important. Working and maintaining a good rapport with the creative and technical

tear down rig, to move from venue to venue and it had to also occupy less space on the truck, which in turn brings down cost to the promoters. After some brainstorming with the event management company BToS Productions and the Production Manager we came up with a simple yet effective truss plan, bearing in mind the creative requirement of the show. The rig was

the truss, unless for maintenance of a broken fixture. To achieve this, my rig rarely has generic fixtures. On this tour every light was an intelligent fixture i.e., all controls were available at my desk. This makes the rig dynamic and helps in achieving much more with lesser limitations. We used a variety of Martin fixtures on this show. This helped us maintain the color palettes better as it was from the same manufacturer. For control I used the MA Lighting Grand Ma Full Size.” His favourite fixtures however, are from the Clay Paky range. “Clay Paky over the years has proven to be stable and they are constantly upgrading the features. It’s the best and most reliable in the category,” he says. Lighting design is a critical component of AR Rahman’s striking visual presence on stage and delivering a cinematic feel replete with verve and emotion can be a challenge for any designer. “A.R Rahman, the name itself is like a huge brand name. The unique challenge is to uphold the pride and prestige of this brand. From an artist’s point of view, nothing but the best is a usual expectation. To deliver to his satisfaction is the biggest challenge, and I am happy doing just that. The audience too has beyond par expectations when it comes to their favorite artist. The integration of large quantities of LED visual content on set along with Lighting also requires lot of planning

team of all the departments helps to deliver the best overall experience that meets the requirements and objectives of the clients,” says Harold. “A show can be successful but if people remember the visual impact, years afterwards too, it is something I feel proud and happy about,” he adds. Providing perspective on one such show - The AR Rahman US tour 2018, that stretched the boundaries of what lighting can achieve, Harold says, “To work with AR Rahman, one needs to be a perfectionist else there is no place in his crew list. It was a touring show

designed with special truss system so that the lighting fixtures are pre-rigged and travel within the truss avoiding the need for flight cases. The whole rig was addressed and tested before it left the warehouse. This was done in a similar manner in which big international acts tour. There was a lot of pre-programming done for this show as well. We had an extremely tight time frame while moving from one venue to the other, so, we could not afford to make any mistakes and everything had to be spot on.” “My belief from the very early days of

budgets, it is just getting more difficult than before. There are times when a client’s expectations are really huge, and it can only be justified with a certain type and quantity of lighting inventory. Commercials play an important role and a decisive factor for lot of regular shows, but to get around these external hurdles and still to be able to deliver a spectacular show is a challenge and an art. Time has come when Technical Teams are gaining substantial prominence, since the responsibility of a great show is not

the equipment are within the in-house inventory,” he adds. Now that’s great if working on a big show with a big budget, but for most times, the harsh reality is that budgets are tight. Using great quality fixtures from manufacturers such as Robe, Clay Paky and Martin can put a dent on any budget, so the natural temptation in India has been to settle for budget China kit. There was a time when many in the industry scoffed and scorned at the idea of using Chinese fixtures, but as technology continues to evolve, the same technology also seems to have filtered down into the China light manufacturing industry, as Harold affirms, “Not duplicate anymore. Over the last 3 or 4 years, they have evolved to be good products. There are a lot of good Chinese fixtures in the market. It’s flooded with a lot of brands. The right choice of fixtures is what matters. They have established their own standard and are moving up.”

THE TREND Constantly thinking up new avenues for lighting design, Harold says, “Set designs have evolved from conventional décor fabrication heavy set to the present LED heavy set. Similarly, lighting design has evolved from just lighting up the stage and performer. Now it’s about integrating the entire set as one complete production technical design. This integration opens a lot of creativity for the show and final output, which was much restricted earlier. I am designing a lot of production designs with complete lighting and visual integration. I prefer to trigger graphics and light presets during the show with timecode. This helps to get the right balance and be on cue.” Harold has seen many developments in lighting technology over the years. Elaborating on the current trend he says, “Mapping video content onto light fixtures, to add dynamics to the stage is the current trend. Currently, LED fixtures are more versatile and are getting brighter with much lower power consumption. There is a combination of lens and lamp for desired results. LED pixel mapping has opened up the scope for new effects.” Speaking about live stage production trends in India, he says, “Stage shows in India have been big for a long time. Indian based shows have different cultural concepts. Sets have been elaborate and

PRESONUS AUDIO ELECTRONICS INTRODUCES THE CDL SERIES LOUDSPEAKERS PreSonus Audio Electronics has introduced the CDL-series loudspeakers, the latest additions to the company’s line of innovative sound reinforcement designs. The CDL12 Constant Directivity Loudspeaker combines the best attributes of point source and line array technology into a unique patent-pending design, radiating a highly focused pattern with consistent SPL throughout the frequency response range, both on- and offaxis. The companion subwoofer, the CDL18s, utilizes an innovative ported design that maximizes efficiency to create a big bass sound from a compact cabinet. Both Dante -enabled, powered enclosures can be flown as a vertical array, or combined for groundstacked applications to create a complete, coherent loudspeaker system with an even response across the frequency spectrum. Each CDL12 consists of eight 2-inch drivers aligned in a segmented circular-arc high-frequency array centered in front of a 12-inch woofer.

The output of the low-frequency driver travels from the same acoustic axis as the high-frequency array so that the pattern always radiates from the center of the CDL12—whether used individually, or as part of an acoustically coupled vertical array with up to six enclosures. Because of this, the CDL12 avoids the near-field anomalies that can interfere with the sound quality of a traditional line array. This makes the CDL12 ideally suited for a broader range of venue sizes, creating a far-field

response almost immediately as the sound is projected from the center of the enclosure. Thus, the controlled 120˚ horizontal coverage pattern is maintained while the vertical coverage is expanded by 20˚ per box deployed. The result is a system that can be scaled from 20˚ to 120˚ of vertical coverage, making the CDL12 an ideal choice for array use. The CDL12’s hybrid point source/ line array design combines the benefits of both technologies and delivers very focused sound with

67

consistent SPL. Furthermore, a low 420 Hz crossover frequency minimizes comb filtering and doesn’t compete with conventional vocal range. As a line array system for fixed installations, the ability to fly five enclosures under one or two companion CDL18s subwoofers provides considerable flexibility when addressing room size. The CDL12 includes an integrated 500W x 500W Class D power amplifier with onboard DSP presets. The CDL18s features a unique port configuration that maximizes efficiency to create big bass sound from a compact cabinet. Each of the four triangle-shaped ports is placed in a corner so that it couples to the cabinet, using the side walls to effectively elongate each port and allowing the CDL18s to move more air in a compact enclosure. Its custom 18-inch low-frequency transducer with 4-inch voice coil can travel 7 mm before over-excursion, and easily handles 800W, providing the articulate low-end punch audio professionals demand. The CDL18s and CDL12 form a unique loudspeaker system ideal for both portable PA and installed sound applications.

the discerning palate – vegetarian and non-vegetarian alike. That apart, Keiba’s characteristic laid-back lounge feel ironically exudes a happy vibe of liveliness. An evident nip in the air in the outdoor section provides the perfect transient to the bustling energy in the indoor section which is almost always abuzz with music; and the lovely bar which is shared by the outdoor and indoor spaces. A KAROSUING AMBIENCE Before all else, Music is what keeps the night young for all; and the music at Keiba aims to cover as much of the spectrum as it possibly can through an opportune programming schedule that

witnesses non-intrusive lounge music during the day, which progresses into groovy electronic vibes as the night moves on. In a nutshell, the music policy is fairly-simple, with genres across the electronic spectrum dominating the weekly programming, subject to the day of the week. The power-packed music is dished out by the venue’s team of residents, who play designated slots, with each one bringing their own unique flavour of music expertise to offer. The residents work closely with the core management team in devising unique and enticing music themes for each day of the week with the idea being to constantly reinvent the programming schedule

to keep things fresh and vibrant for patrons, especially those who frequent the venue on a regular basis. The programming schedule, we learn, is created after intense analysis that comprises an amalgam of a close watch on current music trends (local and international) and customer feedback. As a member of the management puts it “The music played at Keiba is what we like to call ‘niche’. We are extremely particular about music and sets, and there is an evident effort to ensure that the quality and repertoire of the music being played is simply exceptional. And thus far our patrons have loved it. Now we’re focused on raising the bar every single day.”

AN AURAL TREAT The unsung hero behind the amazing music experience here is the exceptional aural reinforcement which heightens the music playback throughout the venue – delivered through a top-notch pro audio architecture comprising an amalgam of products from world class brands Niles Audio, Atlas Audio, Nova Audio and ToneArt; designed and integrated by the team from Rivera International – the official distributors in India of the aforementioned pro-audio brands. Rajesh Sadarangani, director of Rivera International, comments “When you visit Keiba, you’ll instantly recognize that the venue prides itself on delivering only the finest quality to their patrons – be the food and beverage or any other aspect of the service experience. This was the brief that we received during the planning stages of the project and its so heartening to see everything come

AN ENLIGHTENING AURAL EXPERIENCE CAPTIVATES AIIMS JODHPUR WITH AN ALL BOSE PRO AUDIO ARCHITECTURE Students, staff and teaching faculty at the AIIMS Jodhpur are in awe of their very own enchanting 942-seater multipurpose auditorium, which entails sights of aesthetic regale and a phenomenal aural experience that enthrals, thanks to an avant-garde professional audio architecture comprising RoomMatch loudspeakers and PowerMatch

the wide variety of applications like Conferences and Seminars, Drama and Theatre, Classical Dance and Music Performances, College Festivals and Cultural Programs, Movie playback in 5.1 Cinema Surround, and VIP functions, to name a few. During the commissioning stages of the auditorium though, it was found that the space posed several acoustical challenges due to the sheer

working diligently on EngineerIn-Charge, Shri RK Joshi, SE-AIIMS Jodhpur directive of ensuring an immersive sound experience, our team at Hi-tech Audio team in conjunction with Bose Professional India’s technical design team devised an audio architecture comprising the Bose RoomMatch line array system with the revolutionary Delta-Q progressive directivity technology

peculiar reflection patterns, which in-turn helped in narrowing down on the precise combination of RoomMatch loudspeakers, PowerMatch amplifiers and Control Space processors to deliver a soundscape coverage that would thoroughly cover every nook and corner of the seating area. This was the kind of high-quality engineered solution that the

And the AIIMS institute in Jodhpur is no exception to this norm – offering curricular and extra-curricular infrastructure that’s designed to foster holistic development of their students in every aspect of life. A key highlight of the facilities and infrastructure is the sprawling auditorium; which undoubtedly makes for a visually stunning space, in addition to the fact of it playing host to

expanse and the physical dimensions, in addition to the extensive use of certain materials which obviously increased cosmetic appeal but impugned acoustic intelligibility. It is at this point that AIIMS Jodhpur’s Engineer-In-Charge, Shri RK Joshi, SEAIIMS Jodhpur, along with his team, recognised the auditorium’s need for a special solution that could offer a high degree of intelligibility and, at the same time, be aesthetically appealing to maintain the facility’s appealing visuals. Hi-Tech Audio – the official partners for Bose Professional Systems in North India – presented the perfect solution. Manik Gupta of Hi-Tech Audio shares, “We proposed a tech solution after commissioning a thorough analysis of the venue, which involved a comprehensive acoustic modelling of the space. Based on the results derived from the analysis, and

These modules are highly steerable, thereby allowing the engineers to direct audio to a great degree of concentration to maximizing intelligibility, and, also deliver appropriate SPL with right tonal balance needed for the wide variety of applications. Two units of dual 15” RoomMatch subwoofers are included in each of the main Left and Right arrays, while the middle array which is primarily intended for centre channel content during cinema applications is shorter and devoid of any subwoofers. The surround system includes Bose RoomMatch Utility RM108 multi-utility loudspeakers, which uses the same compression drivers as the main array speakers, strategically placed across the venue to ensure crystal clear audio delivery at every seat. The

stage monitors are multi-position Bose Panaray Series loudspeakers which can cater to individual or group foldback needs. The entire system is driven by six units of highly configurable PowerMatch® amplifiers providing up to 2400W of power; while processing and overall management takes place through a modular ControlSpace Engineered Sound Processor with 12 inputs and 16 outputs; with instant control of sound system operating modes and other critical parameters available through a programmable dedicated surface mount DSP controller. “The entire loudspeaker system at the auditorium sounds so beautiful – it’s like a truly immersive surround sound experience. The system functions so wonderfully, and the quality of sound is really crisp and clear. We are so happy we chose to partner with Bose!” stated a senior member of the AIIMS Jodhpur management. And speaking about the audience’s response, EngineerIn-Charge, Shri RK Joshi, SE-AIIMS

Jodhpur stated, “Everybody absolutely loves the sound – they love the atmosphere that it provides in here, and it is so heartening to witness how deeply involved and engaged the audience gets into whatever’s happening on-stage. Kudos to the entire audio team, and great commendation to Bose Professional for offering such wonderful products.” Vibhor Khanna, Country Manager, Bose Professional India, shares, “To be associated with a prestigious name like AIIMS Jodhpur is absolutely amazing. First off, we’d like to thank the entire management at AIIMS Jodhpur for trusting Bose to deliver

the kind of world class sound experience that their magnificent auditorium truly deserves. Commendation to the Hi-Tech Audio team, who worked closely with our team of expert technical design engineers, to deliver a system architecture that’s absolutely stunning in every sense of the word. I believe the auditorium at AIIMS Jodhpur is a shining example of a truly adept and efficient performance space; and it is a matter of great pride for everyone involved with this project, that the eventual result is nothing less than spectacular sound.”

A member of the management at Keiba shares their views about the audio experience, saying “We pride ourselves for the high standards of quality in every aspect of service, and there’s absolutely no doubt that audio system we have here is an absolutely crucial aspect of it all. The system is simply fabulous. The speakers accurately reproduce all kinds of music with great ease; and has enough room to deliver a louder and more impactful audio performance whenever needed. Not only are we extremely pleased with the quality of sound, but also the system’s ease of use and lowmaintenance. And what’s even more heartening is the fact that several

patrons have complimented us on the great quality of sound here! The Rivera International team have done a great job, and we appreciate all the work, effort and dedication they’ve put into making Keiba a dining destination that sounds every bit as great as it looks!” A member of the senior management at Keiba shares “The response has been great so far, and the future seems promising. Though it’s too soon to discuss stuff like expansion plans etc, we must say that there’s a definite enticement, and these details will be made public at the right time!”

RIVERA INTERNATIONAL REINFORCES SPELL-BINDING AUDIO EXPERIENCE AT NOM NOM Mumbai’s Nom Nom is the quintessential tour of Asia on a plate; with faint whiffs of lemongrass and crushed dried chillis, with condiments, spices, proteins, carbohydrates and coconut-rich meals servings your palate at any given time of the day. From crystal Dimsums and Bao (with shredded chicken in black pepper sauce) to stir-fries (wok tossed chicken with Schuan pepper and broccoli in soy sauce) to the Thai green curry with Jasmine rice, and of course Tab Tim Crob and more – Nom Nom aims to please the palate and the soul alike. And much like Nom Nom’s selection of delectable cuisines— Thai, Indonesian, Singaporean, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Malaysian – the ambience at the venue is evergreen and refreshing – like a warm breeze on a frigid wintery night. The open bar and kitchen concept of the venue is a fun concept – both spaces are cosy when compared to the spacious seating area which features interiors made of jute,

efficient and dextrous loudspeaker – versatile application without ever compromising on quality and performance. The VS18 too is similar in its applicative use – low frequency impact that’s guaranteed to amaze. And

LIGHTING INSTALL: LOUNGE BAR

Integrated Entertainment Solutions lights up the Warehouse The Thane area of Mumbai has a new upscale lounge - The Warehouse Lounge, that has already become Thane’s happening night spot. Lighting up the dance floor is Mumbai’s premerier lighting company - IES. PT takes a look.

arehouse Lounge is the latest nightspot in Mumbai’s City of Lakes – Thane. Located in the industrial Kothari Compound of Kokanipada area of Thane West in Central Mumbai, Warehouse Lounge is a casual dining and dance venue boasting of great menu and an equally happening ambiance. ing integration, which peps up the otherwise dark “warehouse” like setting. A visually minimalist Martin Audio system supplied by Integrated Entertainment Solutions (IES) has been installed at the venue, but what stands out at the new lounge is the lighting, also designed and installed by the company. The over two decade old Distribution & Trading Company and sole distributor for some of the world’s best lighting brands like Robe, Avolites and Madrix,

to name just a few, were roped in to provide complete turnkey solution for the lounge which included, Concept, Design, Supply, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance & Servicing for both audio and lighting. The promoters had provided a clear, simple brief that they wanted a nightspot that Thane had not seen before. “The promoters wanted an upscale place in Thane, which was missing in this part of town. There are pubs and

76

clubs in Thane but none like Warehouse Lounge. The venue can easily accommodate 200-300 people. The ground level has seating on both sides with the bar located to the far end of the ground level, with a dance area in front of the bar. There is an upper deck or mezzanine level where the VIP area and DJ booth are located and additionally, there is a quieter outdoor section where people can have a smoke or can sit down and have a relaxed conversation.

The size and scale of the venue is its main USP. The place offers everything that a Thane patron would normally have had to drive to Mumbai for,” says Rasesh Parkeh of IES. Though the venue was intended to be used as a lounge (as the name suggests) for most part of the time, IES based their lighting design concept to suit a multi-utility venue. “First and foremost I made sure that I deliver a lounge effect. We achieved this by using down lights and by using LED lighting bars on Lighting Inventory the walls to create a very rich lounge 3 watts laser IES brand effect. If the LED pinspots: IES make venue were to use RGB Decoders : IES make warm white in the LED configuration, DMX splitters: IES make then they would be able to do lunches and casual day meetings as well. The venue can also be used for announcing a product launch by using the spotlight feature in the moving heads that we have installed. Two projectors and projection screens on either sides allows patrons to project images and videos. Even if people wanted to host a party and wanted to book the whole place, they would be able to use the venue very effectively, courtesy the lighting The venue boasts of a high ceiling of 20ft from ground level and IES ensured that they used this to their advantage. 625 LED tubes hang down from the centre of the ceiling, just above the bar in the VIP zone install,” says Parekh. MADRIX is a huge part of the installation at Warehouse Lounge delivering vibrant, symphonic effects. The venue boasts of a high ceiling of 20ft from ground level and IES ensured that they used this to their advantage. 625 LED tubes hang down from the centre of the ceiling, just above the bar in the VIP zone, while LED dots adorn the other sides of the VIP section. The Madrix software and Avolites console drives the LED tubes and LED Dots installed from the roof of the venue. The main challenge for IES was working around the structure of the roof as it was not flat and was slanted on both sides of the centre. IES had to get creative to implement the design and install the lights. “Madrix operates on three different levels – 1. It has presets already built into it, which allows you to do a lot of

stuff, which is ready to go. Once you do a little basic mapping and storing, the rest is a cakewalk and can be done by anybody very easily. 2. Based on Madrix’s original slogan, ‘Madrix – Music makes light’, MADRIX offers incredible Music2Light (M2L) effects. Based on that you could use your sound to generate colours, patterns and generate incredible designs. You have a sound output that comes out of your sound desk, goes into your computer and you could use the music that you are playing to drive it; it’s that simple. 3. Madrix allows us to program designs. As a part of our installation package, we have also given them a programmer and he has programmed certain features, and the venue has a LJ who works with us to un-

derstand what we are doing and learn how to use the hardware and software features.” The challenge for Parekh while designing the lighting for the Warehhouse Lounge was to take into consideration, not only the target clientele, but also the number of promoters involved in the project. Seven promoters backed the project and each one had a vision, which needed to be taken into account, while also taking into deliberation the Architect’s vision. “The promoters are new entrants in the hospitality business and each of them comes from diverse business backgrounds. There were pro and cons to this. People who have not been in the hospitality industry cannot visualize beyond a point but the beauti-

77

ful part of working with them was that they were extremely particular about details. Everything was conceptualised and planned to the T. Only after I had worked on several Autocad drawings and explained the entire concept of the tubes, lasers, LED dots, projectors etc., after all the promoters had vetted the plans and come back with their own version and I had gone back to them with my renditions was the design approved. The challenge for me was to see that all seven of them were happy,” he says. The lighting installation that took about a month and a half to be completed, today stands testament to the twenty-year expertise of IES as one of the premiere companies in the field of pro lighting.

MARKET FOCUS – LIGHTING

The Lighting Trail Lighting, lasers and lighting console sales and distribution has grown robustly across the Indian market. Lighting engineer and founder of artist and event management agency, Mixtape - Naveen Deshpande, talks to PT about the current trends in lighting and growth and future of the Indian lighting industry.

G

rowth of Indian Lighting Industry

The demand for professional lighting equipment has grown in both rental as well as the fixed install market. Top end rental companies today stock the world’s leading brands in entertainment lighting like Clay Paky, Robe and Martin Lighting, however expensive, as top end lighting designers demand this quality in their riders with international top acts performing in India. “When it comes to Indian Lighting market and its growth in the past decade in terms of technology and equipment, then it’s safe to say we won’t get electrocuted now :) (Joking). There has been a tremendous growth. We are obviously a bit behind in terms of fixtures reaching our continent at the same time it is launched but I am happy to see the competitive inventory being introduced in the market by different vendors. It clearly shows there is an urge to grow and cope up with technology and inventory available outside of India. While designing the lighting for an event or venue, creative decisions are primarily dependent on two things i.e. type of content and available inventory. Most of the established vendors in India have pretty much everything I need so I work backward and design accordingly,” says Deshpande. Stage lighting for big music acts driven by EDMs and International pop and rock stars has grown rapidly in India, and with more international artistes expected to perform in the coming years, rental companies find it necessary to boast of a global quality inventory. However, often the budgets aren’t planned or allocated properly for these big acts. “As a designer and being into the event management world, changes and budget are always an inevitable part, but I have been quite fortunate to

work with clients who understand the creative approach of lighting. If the idea resonates, then most of the time they come ahead to support what you have in mind. Changes, budgets, adjustments will always be a criteria in the event management world. The resources to bring the creative ideas to life are getting better now, especially, in terms of budgets. It’s just been a few years since the artists, music festivals and big events have started demanding LD’s, so there definitely is a need and it’s only going to get better from here.”

As this scene evolved, mutated and branched into alternative rock, fusion, electronic and other live music avenues, he used his passion for music and penchant for the business to stack up experience in managing bands, booking shows, dealing with promoters and venues, and eventually producing shows. The main forte of his company – Mixtape, is artist management, bookings, touring and

“From the kind of lighting inventory available and popular in the Indian market, I really like the new Martin line of fixtures. The VDO sceptron, Dotron series has been on top of my mind and I have been trying out few ideas on how I can integrate the same in my shows. I am waiting for the Martin Vipers to hit the market soon. Last year at the NH7 Weekender Festival, I was fortunate enough to use Showtech Sunstrips, which have been my favorite from then on, and they look fantastic. Some of the stuff, which is picking up now are the B - Eyes, Shapeshifters currently available all over India,” he says. “If we talk about the widespread infiltration of cheap Chinese products, which are of low-quality, then very honestly, it’s a never-ending fight,

especially in India. Although I am glad that Avolites and grandMA have joined hands together to work on this issue. Hopefully, we will have the replica police in India too. I have built my career on Avolites, so, I still use it for a lot of my shows. I have also started using grandMA very recently, so I am still exploring that side of technology. My gear list depends on the kind of show I am doing,” he adds. Although, I haven’t seen much use of lasers in India except for the international touring acts but I am definitely keen to use them myself and see how I can integrate lights, AV and lasers together.”

Future “The main difference between the lighting industry in India and the lighting industry in developed economies is of safety. I think before anything we all need to ensure that we set good safety standards for all the people working in the lighting world. We are growing pretty fast but it’s important for us to not ignore the foundation of any field i.e. safety. In the next five years, the lighting market in India, in terms of stage show lighting, is only going to get better and better and I am really glad to be a part of these avant-garde times,” Deshpade enthuses. “A quick advice to the newcomers would be that lighting design is a never-ending creative process and every day you will learn something new so being humble to everyone working with you would be the best way. Passionately sharing your experiences and knowledge with others is the only way to nurture and help the lighting industry grow in India.”

LEARNING TO FLY

A

R Rahman’s North America tour was a somewhat a life changing experience for me whilst I was looking forward to the 10 city tour. Months of planning was going into choice of rental house & audio production and at that time the only thing that was confirmed audio wise, was the India Audio team consisting of a consortium of like minded thinkers towards a common goal of exemplary audio for this milestone tour. Technical details isn’t the scope of this foreword, what I would like to talk about was the things I learnt in this journey and how it can apply to you too. For starters, the taking home from this expedition that hit a home run with me was the sheer prowess at which the local riggers put our installations up in each of their venues and the manner in which they achieved their objectives be it bridles, dead hangs. They were all amazing and this counts for the years of training and the specialist skill set they possess. Now this comes to an important point I am making that, I am always told by promoters and production professionals that these venues are “Union” venues and we have to work as per their norms and how it’s a pain in the butt to do so, I beg to differ here and have seen immense benefits of working with the local union. For one, they know the venue extremely well, they can fly and provide you the rigging points at a speed the most experience riggers won’t be able to since they don’t know the demographics or the load bearing capacities and the local laws of H&S. Now coming from someone like me who would come to load-in at 5:30 AM with the Production Manager, I would stare into the roof just watching these

guys move with stealth and speed proving the rigging to the audio, video & lighting service providers in their positions without any shouting or screaming or accidents or near misses and this was the most admirable thing I experienced in the United States Of America. I came home procuring a lot of the rigging gear and venue measuring apparatus they used and I was just like a trainee rigger, Learning to Fly! The audio systems engineers too, I worked with three unique blokes who had a trick up his sleeve and a workflow that I could write home about. Now being the Audio Director and Systems Engineer for the project there is always going to be a clash of opinions or a different design strategy on rigging and aligning the PA systems. The first thing I would do to break the ice with the A1 was to tell them “Lets do this together like a democracy on decisions and lets in that journey learn and gain from each others experience and expertise” Now that worked like a huge deal breaker and I left the US making friends rather than rubbing egos, whilst one of my Co-Systems Engineers had a Celiac disease, I made sure he got appropriate meals whilst he was taking boxes in the air. We have to cover up for each other in order to work and this is the genesis of making friends and earning respect rather than leaving a graveyard of relationships. Now each one of them taught me something about tuning and alignment that I took home as a treasure whilst I passed on my most coveted dexterity of accurately and consistently measuring the ‘Phase Response’ of the subwoofers in return for their work/ skill/knowledge and the best thing is

that even when I came back home some of them went on phone calls to discuss my ideology on calibration, alignment, digital audio transport and systems control. Now this really made me feel so touched that despite me being probably sitting barely a mile away from some of my colleagues they don’t ask me these questions and we have systems engineers/ techs two continents away wanting to learn from my ‘Design Education’ which led me to a greater sense of responsibility to now move from intrinsic knowledge to elemental knowledge in the field of audio systems design and engineering. Another praiseworthy thing about the systems engineers and even the venue sound guys and girls whose PA’s we plugged into when we could not rig boxes in every nook and cranny. They followed me like my shadow making sure that every seat, every punter, every fan even in the upper gantry’s of the stadiums, nosebleed seats of the arenas and the pan corners of the sheds heard immaculate audio because isn’t this what we are here for, the fans and their sonic experience of the show even though they might have bought the most humble tickets they must hear the sound like they are at the console. I would go to the hotel room every night exhausted because my systems colleagues and me would fine comb every seat in the venue for the best sound, this wasn’t a challenge, it is a old habit and a personal mandate that virus spread like an epidemic with the audio crew. The rental house we worked with was a company I would shake in my formative years to read what they achieved with Metallica and to synergize with them on this tour

was a dream for a boy ‘fan’ of the Delicate Sound of their “Thunder” Audio. They have taught me a thing or two about deployments and meeting some of the guys who have such immense experience working with the best artists in the world was just humbling and its not the artist rooms and catering that you learn, it’s backstage, loading dock over donuts and coffee where the wisdom of the road comes from and for this, I am blessed to have been chosen to be the person to look after the sound of the most iconic artist of our generation. My team without whom, I am nothing in the entire scheme of things. I want to thank you forward thinkers, dreamers and go-getters from the bottom of my heart, you pushed the boat out of this project and the very fact that you guys learnt all the songs, solos and put your cumulative years of experience into a 3 hour show what normally has always been a clinical job to a creative one and during our meetings the one thing I kept pushing you guys was our tour audio hash tag #ArtisanSound I am so proud you lived unto it. I thank my stars and all the people whose positive energies have brought me here and made me realize, I came here for a purpose and that’s called a sonic life. Thank You! Karma.....

CORPORATE GUEST THE SHARP END China manufactured lighting gear is becoming a staple on Indian live stages. But what are the repercussions (or not)! Seasoned lighting designer Atul Sonpal discusses the consequences of being at the sharp end of the business.

I

n recent years, the Indian lighting industry has seen a tremendous growth. A decade ago, we had to rely on international lighting designers for many shows because India had only a handful of designers (including me). We would design lighting for International artistes in India, as well as Indian artistes touring abroad. I have gone to Australia for AR Rahman shows and have done lot of shows all around the world, which are very much in tandem with international standards. In terms of inventory, all the equipment had to be sourced from Mumbai at one point in time. But, today almost every tier 1 city has its own cluster of lighting distributors and engineers, who are capable, well equipped and trained enough to deliver whatever is needed for the show. Even in non-metro cities like Indore, Nagpur and Pune, the growth of the industry is very much visible. There was a time when laser lights were not easily available in the market, but today, the Indian market has an array of choices. Technology too is evolving rapidly with regular updates on products.

Challenges Although the lighting industry is on the upward curve with continuous growth, there are certain roadblocks, with budget constraints being one of them. Lighting is the life of every show; every big stage requires a lot of lighting, which cannot be compromised. Every client wants a great show with great lighting effects on stage, but no one wants to pay for it. Very few shows in India have the kind of budget, which would allow us to use only branded equipment. This is the reason why some of the better products from major brands are missing from rental inventories. In order to meet the requirements and expectations of the client, lighting rental companies have to choose cheap Chinese products over good branded products. Years ago, I was charging Rs 50 to 60 lakhs per award night, but now I am doing those same shows for 10

September - October 2018

lakhs, because of budget issues. The first thing that every client says is I do not have the budget, but they all want a good show. In order to match their tastes and requirements, we have to use Chinese products. Nevertheless, the industry is evolving gradually and many suppliers are demanding good quality equipment. In the next couple of years, India will witness a shift to quality products. The other major challenge is the limited set-up time we get. Even for big EDMs and Music Festivals, we get only one night for set-up, in which we have to complete the loading, trussing, light installations, cabling, testing, take care of work force, security & safety measures etc. We have to do this in a very short span of time so that the sound people can then fly their speaker systems and the artistes can take the stage for the final rehearsal. Only few big budget shows give us ample time and enough budgets.

Indian market & Chinese products Chinese products have become an integral part of the Indian lighting market and I don’t think that the market can survive without it. Chinese products have captured 90% percent of the market. This has led to a catch 22 kind of situation. The cheap costs of the lights allow us to use more inventory and lighting effects on stage, which in turn makes the show look good. The client is happy, so again the next time they offer us the same measly budget. We are trying to change this trend from our end with the help of visionary clients. For instance, we used only quality lights for AR Rahman shows, as I had support from

Atul Sonpal, Lighting Designer, Jagmag Electricals A.R. Rahman’s production team, as Mr. Rahman is very quality conscious. The artiste too has to be like-minded; unfortunately, most other Indian artistes do not care about the sound and lighting gear used on stage. Claypaky is the first company in the world to introduce the Sharpy to the lighting market, but the Chinese came out with cheap copies and they have now earned more than Claypaky has in the Indian market. If one Clay Paky costs 2.50 lakhs, in the same amount you can get six to eight Chinese lights. Small rental companies go for cheaper lights with the ideology that even if two lights fail, the other six will work and there isn’t a huge difference in the effects that both the lights deliver. Adding to this dilemma is the fact that big brands come up with a new products every three-four months. For instance, Claypaky came out with a Super Sharpy after the Sharpy, but bigger rental companies who brought the Sharpy, have not yet got their ROI from the earlier Sharpy. Meanwhile the Chinese have already copied the Super Sharpy and even a small rental company has a higher version than the bigger rental companies have.

Investment on Lighting Consoles When it boils down to the controllers however, all companies want a good quality original brand because the console is the heart and soul of

any lighting design. It is the console, which makes the lights, work the way they do. Most companies do not invest in Chinese consoles because if there is a problem in the console, it can ruin the entire show; none of the lights will work. In contrast, if you have 100 Chinese lights and 10 are not working, nobody will even notice. There are of course Chinese companies who make copies of Avolites and sell it at one tenth of the price of Avolites, but there are few takers for this. Also, most brands come out with new consoles only once in two-three years, unlike the light inventory, wherein new lights can be found in the market every quarter.

Market for Big Brands International shows and EDMs typically have international brands like Claypaky, Robe, Martin etc. on their riders. Therefore, for big popular brands, the market in India lies in shows with international artistes, for which big rental companies need to be equipped with good equipment. In order for all lighting companies to invest in quality brands, we need many more international artistes coming down to India. Nobody wants to invest in expensive lighting for just one or two shows in a year, but yes, if in a month there are two shows then more companies are bound to invest in quality equipment.

Market Growth I have been working in the industry from last 25 years and year after year the industry is just growing. A decade or two decades ago there were only six to seven lighting companies in India, but now there are 60-70 lighting companies. This growth is mainly because of the Chinese products market though.

MANUFACTURER PROFILE: PR LIGHTING

PR Lighting flexing its muscles globally Interview with Sasha Xiong – Deputy General Manager, Intl. Sales Division

Sasha Xiong of PR Lighting with Davinder Wadhwa of MSS Pvt. Ltd.

Starting operations from a 1,000 sq.mt., workshop in Downtown Guangzhou with a staff of 20-30, Pearl River Lighting (as it was known then) has come a long way. Graduating from being an OEM to designing and manufacturing their own brands, with a team of 70 to 80 engineers working in the R&D team, PR lighting (as it is now called) are making noticeable strides into the India market, supported strongly by distributors Modern Stage Service Pvt. Ltd. PT met up with Sasha Xiong, Deputy General Manager, Intl. Sales Division, PR Lighting Ltd. to know the whole story.

W

hich was the first lighting innovation that identified PR lighting as an original manufacturer and major brand? PR started business very early in 1984 as an OEM. In 1990, PR developed the first intelligent lighting in China and in 1994 PR developed the first moving light in China. Therefore, PR has number of firsts to its credit. In the year 2000, we started promoting the PR brand internationally.

it was not an easy decision to switch from being an OEM manufacturer, to manufacturing your own brand. It was a decision that lost the company its existing customers. However, Mr. Liang’s vision, backed by a strong R&D and sales team helped PR lighting to grow in the international market. What were the main milestones in the 30-year history of PR Lighting?

What were the main factors that helped PR Lighting develop international identity, recognition and respect?

PR came up with important innovations like the first moving head and the first intelligent light, which I consider as milestones in the history of the com-

It was the vision of PR founder Mr. Dave Liang that helped the company develop international identity, because it’s not very easy to develop your own brand in the international market. Also,

pany. PR Lighting was also invited to formulate the industry standard by the government and it was the only lighting manufacturer, which was invited. Another milestone was in the year 2010,

September - October 2018

when PR became the main supplier for the Asian Games. In 2016, PR started developing the Aqua waterproof series. All these can be regarded as milestones in the history of PR lighting. Are PR Lighting product innovations driven by demands from the international markets? Actually, both, international as well as domestic market! China’s domestic market is very strong and it is the biggest market in the world. It was a good decision to develop for both markets. PR started with the international market and in time progressed towards the domestic market. Now the domestic market is getting very strong. How much has PR Lighting invested into Research & Development?

84

PR has been investing a lot of money for R&D because new products are the lifeline of PR. Every year PR is investing a big amount of money for new product innovation. We also invest a lot in pre-product development activities and basic research. We also collaborate with some of the Chinese Universities and Institutes with academics related to the lighting industry, and develop some programmes together for development of new innovative lighting technology. It’s not necessary however that we have to implement it immediately into our products. PR Lighting has made a huge investment in the lighting industry’s future, by setting up the above-mentioned collaborations with institutions and universities. What kind of tie-up do

you have with the institutions? Sometimes we need to design some optical systems, especially when the lights are complicated like moving heads for instance. By collaborating with the institutes, we have the resources and we are able to ally with optical experts, who can give us various suggestions. Sometimes we also invite the professors to PR, because they are specialized in optical systems. This collaboration enables us to learn a lot from each other. How big is your R&D and production team? From time to time we have about 70 to 80 engineers working in our R&D team. More than the number of people, it’s about the factory production line. During the peak season, PR has a record of having more than 800 people working in the factory. Now we are trying to get the work efficiency even higher, so we don’t need so many workers, but still we are trying to reach the same production with the same production capacity. Do you think that because US has

India for sure is a tough competitor to the other markets and is in future going to be one of the best markets. America, South America and Southeast Asia also have very good markets. Tell us a little bit about your engagement with the Indian market and have you enjoyed it? I like the India market as it is a potential market. We have great partners here in Modern Stage Service Pvt. Ltd. I know them since 2004 and they’ve been very good partners. PR lighting has developed a very good relationship with our partners and the Indian market has been keeping up since then. Where is the growth in India for PR Lighting? In which segment? Indian market has seen fluctuations. Around three or four years ago it was on the downslide, but since the last few years we can see that demand for lighting has been increasing rapidly due to the de-

many concerts and live shows they demand for more in terms of lighting design and fixtures. Or is it that China too has many big live shows and fixed installs that demand for state-of-theart fixtures? I think that every market has its own different periods of saturation. The US has been a developed market for many years and its now getting saturated. This market has become stable, while China is a developing market for PR and many more lighting manufacturers. The reason why the demand in China is so huge is because it’s developing, but other markets like Europe and US are developed, so their requirement or demand is now very much stable.

I think Mumbai is a good market, but it is a very competitive market. Bangalore is a good market, as also, Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi. Any new launches from PR in the near future? Yes. The latest new launch in India is the AQUA 480 waterproof large aperture beam, ideal for outdoor entertainment, concert,

he Sun is the life source of Earth and the Planets. Both its presence and its absence contribute so totally to all existence. The rest of the Living world accept darkness and adapt. Man is not easily pleased. He has free will and so goes about tidying his surroundings and making things work for all his sensory pleasures. Some say that to enjoy life while the sun was warming the other half of the world he got up to all sorts of tricks to see what was really going on in the darkness around him. It’s been a long slow progression from flint to fire to volcano to gas and just about a century ago that invisible force that elevates us to wizardry - electricity. That elusive force that allows ‘Muggles’ or people with No wizarding power to experience magic. Electricity - That’s what we live and work with. That’s what we dedicate our lives to. Powered by Diesel engines, Grid Lines, Batteries

More significantly the entire world of colour added another dimension to itself. Everything we had gathered about surfaces and reflection we had to half unlearn and relearn. Why half unlearn? Because in this consumer driven world where the consumer has choice - Nobody can mandate when to switch over from one scale to another. Fabrics had to stand up to view in both environments - the brighter halogen burning world and the flatter diode world. Perhaps one of the reason clothes became so bling. People wanted to shine even under muted lights. The big question is - So with the advent of LED - Do Lighting Designers beginning today throw out all the collected wisdom gathered so far? I mean - In the old days when we went exploring caves with hand held flaming devices - there must have been experts who taught

what? No shadows? Some LED boys withered and went about shaping lenses to gather all the illumination from all those diodes into a single shaft. And so we sniffed ‘What No Colour Temperature?’ to which the cheeky lads replied ok ‘let’s Cool white and warm white you out of your complacency.’ Huh? How can you explain two different kinds of whites? To which the cheeky brats went on to add a filter that dropped into the front of the bulb and they blindened us with 4 or 5 different qualities of white from a single fixture. So we purists ran around trying to figure out which one was true white. Meanwhile the MTV generation rounded on us with ‘Who cares. More choice. More happiness’ And we old buggers had to bite the bullet and dive into expanding out colour palette range or simply fade off into becoming government

and other such generating devices we convert Power to Great Lighting, Great Sound and Great Visuals to Inform, To entertain and generally have a Blast. Today’s show designers are truly kids in a candy shop. The array of technologies, the breath of devices and the tools we have to link everything together keep you at your work longer hours but see the rewards. Today’s hot and only topic in the lighting world is LED. Here is the conundrum. Upto this moment all manmade lighting fixtures were associated with heat. Light and Heat were conjoined twins. usually the brighter the bulb, the hotter it got. The whole technology was based on getting the largest amount of electricity to continuously flow in a safe way without the heat generated consuming all around the light source. Thick lenses made of super materials cracked like biscuits. The lights burned. Photographers talked of skin glowing like a beacon of attraction. LED was a truly disruptive technology. It turned every single principal we associated with lighting on its head. Lighting fixtures were ‘cooler’ consumed significantly lower electricity. The pin point of earlier bulbs that created sharp shadows were now replaced with banks of diodes that left no shadows at all.

The big question is - So with the advent of LED - Do Lighting Designers beginning today throw out all the collected wisdom gathered so far? flame up and consume everybody. How to keep refuelling the flames so them remained as steady as possible. During those days these experts must have had pride of place in their tribes. In a world of electric torchlight’s all that knowledge became redundant and these in demand experts suddenly had to find new jobs. Dried reed distributors went bankrupt and the battery cell sellers became the boys all the pretty girls wanted to be seen with. Is that a lesson to us old school light boys? Adapt or die dateless. The point is that us light boys who grew up with bulbs of all sorts set a standard simply by the quality of the light our bulbs through. It emulated the sun, In that most bulbs were designed to cast a single sharp shadow. So when the first LED peddlers arrived - we glared disdainfully down our middle aged noses to the Flatbed LED fixtures and sniffed -

bours cats in colour temperatures ranging from 2400 K all the way up to 10000 K. The only people who saw that temperature 10 years ago were scientists in top rated laboratories studying absolute ranges of metals. A extremely rare population of maybe 80 people in the entire world to almost 60% of the world’s population in maybe 10 years. That’s the inclusive nature of new technology. So my answer to the conundrum of Unlearn and relearn in this world is simply - Learn More. Which forces you to Think More, make more associations, create more. In this case culminating in the famous Obama photo where is head is ringed in the new rainbow in LED hues. New technology in Old spaces The familiar seen in a strikingly different way makes a far greater impact on a larger population. That is the challenge and opportunity facing our industry today.

Indeed all industry. But we who are the masters of visual sleight have so many more tools to excite and enhance the audiences senses. I urge you to study the old ways. Not because they are better, but simply cause it’s easier to use a base point that has the most adherents. And then quickly branch off into a new direction that LED and newer technologies make available. There is a huge school of LED designers who are working hard to re create the magic of the halogen glow. And maintain that glow with all the advantages of LED. Lower heat, lower consumption of electricity that make all fixtures easier to handle and maintain. These two worlds exist side by side. Step into any light shop today. You will see a huge array of LED panels that throw illumination from sources that were unimaginable. Flat, round, pentagons. and a few feet away the same modern technology all shaped to fit into the conventional bulb shape that plugs into a socket only a few minor variations away from Edison’s first experiments with Light. That’s what I love today. The availability and peaceful coexistence of modern technologies with ancient ones. My prayer is that this coexistence engulfs all aspects of our emerging planet as it struggles to cope in the modern day. But that extends the scope of this article into a completely different magazine. God Blessed us all with Light. Let’s make the best use of it in our profession to shape our world for both our clients as well as for our children. NATIVE INSTRUMENTS ANNOUNCES TRAKTOR KONTROL S2 MK3 Native Instruments has released its new entry-level DJ controller, the Traktor Kontrol S2 MK3. It is a smaller version of the equally new Traktor Kontrol S4 MK3, and a new version of Traktor Pro, Traktor Pro 3. The decks on the S2 MK3 are no longer mirrored, so now the two decks are identical, with the CUE and PLAY/PAUSE buttons on the left and the pitch fader on the right. The jog wheels take quite a bit of space, as they are larger than the ones on the Traktor Kontrol S2. MK2. Again, no motorized jogs or haptic feedback as on the S4 MK3,

but that is totally understandable considering the price. The S2 MK3 has no effect modules per deck, but there is the mixer FX section that allows engaging 4 effects with individual knobs per channel. This is a simple solution and fits the target audience. Finally, the S3 MK2 has a USB output on the back marked “IOS”, and that is a clear indicator that this controller is compatible with Traktor DJ. Expect a new version of Traktor DJ to be launched together or closely after the launch of the Native Instrument Traktor Kontrol S2 MK3 S2 MK3.

11 QUESTIONS WITH

Pio Nahum CEO (Chief Executive Officer), CLAY PAKY

Pio Nahum, entered the lighting industry in 1990 and acquired top management positions in multinational leading groups. The lighting industry veteran has a wide experience in managing sales and marketing of high quality capital equipment and is now at the helm of one of the most successful lighting brands in the world – Clay Paky. In this lighting special issue of the magazine, Mr. Nahum sheds light on Clay Paky innovations through the years, the global stage lighting industry, the role Clay Paky has played in the global LED market, his strategy for the Indian Market and everything else in between. From Nuclear Engineering to the lighting industry...how did this shift come about. Please tell us a little about your journey in the lighting industry. No industry is more dynamic and interesting than stage lighting. When I discovered Claypaky and its products in 1988, I fell in love with this world, and since then I have only worked in the lighting industry. After starting with Claypaky, I spent many years with Martin Professional. Then, when the LED boom started, I moved to the architectural sector, which is certainly a bigger market, but at the same time much less dynamic. That’s why I chose to return to Claypaky. I consider myself very lucky because I have experienced many exciting moments in my career related to the success of new products. Ours is an industry where the “right” product determines the success of a company, and - in the world of emotions - the right product can only be and always has to be an innovative product.

What was the main factor that helped Clay Paky become one of the topmost players in the professional lighting market and what according to you was the first lighting innovation by Clay Paky that established the company as a major brand? There are no doubts that Claypaky has two success factors: its ability to create true innovation and the intrinsic quality of its products. Claypaky’s history begins more than 40 years ago, and in its first ten years of life Claypaky became known throughout the world for its innovative “moving” light effects for discos. At that time, we had no Chinese competitors. There were a couple of companies in Taiwan, and the other competitors were in Europe, especially in Italy. Electronics were not yet widespread due to the high cost. Claypaky was able to create some “electromechanical” products, which became icons like the Astroraggi and the Astrodisco. The second big revolution which Claypaky brought about was the moving mirror lights. It started in 1988 with the invention of the Golden Scan, which marked the arrival of electronics in our industry.

The Golden Scan was the most famous Claypaky product for a long time. It was invented for the discos, but it also proved to be ideal as a moving light for rental companies and allowed us to enter the world of “professional show lighting”, which today accounts for almost all of our business. However the new generations know Claypaky for another great invention: the SHARPY. With this small light that generates a powerful, parallel beam, Claypaky invented a new category, which did not exist before: the “narrow-beam-light”, which joins the profile spotlights and wash lights. Today no one puts on a show without beam-lights, which - besides being spectacular - are the only ones whose aerial effects are visible against scenery full of LED walls. Dozens of Sharpy imitations have been made, with a huge impact on the market. Speaking of the Clay Paky innovations, we cannot forget the B-EYE, which revolutionized the world of LED wash lights, by transforming them from simple colour changers into spectacular effects lights for visual and aerial effects. And how not to mention the Mythos and the Scenius Unico, the first true hybrid lights, able to be a spotlight, a beam-light, and even a wash light at the same time. So, in its history, Claypaky has been able

to win over its customers precisely through innovation, which means knowing how to use the most up-to-date technology to meet the real needs of those who work in the business.

Clay Paky became a part of the Osram Group less than five years ago and two years ago acquired ADB Lighting Technologies. How have the mergers enhanced the Clay Paky manufacturing and R&D process or is there a downside? Please also elaborate a little on the Research & Development process at Clay Paky? Claypaky has always been a financially sound company. This means that joining the Osram group was important mainly because it allowed us to organize ourselves better by adopting the best practices that only a multinational group like Osram could bring. The second big advantage is that Osram is the most important LED manufacturer in the world and has totally mastered this technology. With Osram’s advice, we have completely reorganized our research and development, and today the processes are perfectly structured and we are able to manage many new product projects in parallel. We have added highly specialized engineers to our team, especially in the electronics sector and in digitization. On the other hand, the decision to take over ADB stemmed from our desire to

September - October 2018

enter the theatre world through the front door, by offering not only Claypaky moving lights, but also static lights, dimmers and control desks; in short, a complete package and a complete service. In the coming months, we will launch many new ADB products with LED technology on the market. Claypaky’s and ADB’s R&Ds have been merged to exploit all possible synergies.

Which other international lighting manufacturers do you consider as the closest competition to Clay Paky in terms of quality products and why? In our industry, referring solely to the concept of technical product quality is - in my opinion - limiting. We are in the show business, where success depends very much on the “wow effect”. This ultimately means the ability to create innovation. I divide the players on our market into two categories: true innovators and followers, and my respect goes above all to the innovators, who are the ones you can legitimately compare Claypaky to. I have to say that our Asian competitors are virtually all followers, and it is no coincidence that Claypaky has always been the most copied brand by Chinese manufacturers. I could give endless examples. Fortunately the most important lighting designers cannot do without truly innovative products, and that is why they continue to specify and use Claypaky lights. You can also find decent products made in Asia, but they are never the newest. Rental companies investing in a Claypaky light know that they will have an immediate return on their investment, and will be able to satisfy the most demanding of their customers.

Clay Paky quality is well-understood across the world but how do you maintain that quality when using manufacturing locations located outside Italy? Are you also manufacturing in China? In principle, the sales volumes in our industry would not justify production facilities outside Italy. However, there are customs barriers and local protectionism, which make it interesting to have a factory in certain countries. Claypaky is lucky to belong to the Osram group, which has production locations all over the world (including China), and above all a rigorous quality system that guarantees the highest quality levels, regardless of the manufacturing site. Our construction standards require us always to make products that meet international quality and safety standards, without exception. Wherever our lights are manufactured, they comply not only with CE but also with UL certification.

With the AXCOR PROFILE 900, Clay Paky launched a new course in its design research by using a LED light source, instead of a traditional discharge lamp. What do you think is going to be the next biggest innovation in lighting after LED? The AXCOR 900 is only the first moving head LED spotlight we have launched. Just a few months after the AXCOR 900, we already expanded the family. It now includes the AXCOR Spot 300, the AXCOR Beam 300, the AXCOR

We have had more exciting times than today’s. Our business has become more mature, and a consolidation process is under way, which is more the job of a manager than a business owner. There is a great “flattening” among the products, which tend to resemble each other.

Wash 300, the AXCOR Profile 400 and the AXCOR Profile 600. All this happened in the space of twelve months, and those who know our job can imagine the huge amount of work that went into this. Today Claypaky is able to offer two complete lighting fixture ranges, one with LED sources and one with discharge lamps. It is up to the customers to choose: whatever their need is, we have the right product. However, it is clear that LEDs are becoming more and more important, and this technology is continuously being improved. For many years, this will be the technology found in the vast majority of applications. In some, a few, for example in the very high power range, different technologies will be used, which are being experimented, but it is still too early to talk about it.

What excites you about lighting technology and the lighting industry today? We have had more exciting times than today’s. Our business has become more mature, and a consolidation process is under way, which is more the job of a manager than a business owner. There is a great “flattening” among the products, which tend to resemble each other. This trend is made even more extreme by LED technology, because the sources and components used are all very similar. When product features were depending more on mechanical components, there was more space to create innovation and higher differentiation. However, there is one thing that excites me in today’s market, and that is the importance of time-tomarket, communication and marketing. They are sophisticated tools, able to define a new level of differentiation between competitors. The complexity of the products has grown, and it is important to explain customers how to get the best from them.

How do you think the stage lighting industry has changed globally in the last five years? And how do you think India fits into this global scenario? In general, the industry has become more professional both from a technical and a business point of view. We can see this trend in India too, but the change is slower. In India there is a propensity to accept more compromises on the quality both of the products used and the service offered.

94

Would you say Clay Paky is “extremely affordable” or “rather expensive”? Which international market is currently on top of the sales list for Clay Paky We sell capital goods, tools for professionals that have to generate a financial return for the rental companies and satisfy their customers, i.e. the show producers and the public. Once you realize this, the price becomes a pure perception. I think that our prices correspond to the performance, quality and reliability we provide. That is why our most important markets are the ones where customers are more technologically advanced: the USA, Germany, Russia, the UK, etc.

In India, in which segment (fixed install, rental etc.) do you see most potential for Clay Paky lighting and how do you plan to infiltrate that segment and what are the company’s short and long-term goals for the India market? We have a very wide range of products that fit all applications. However, the segment that is most interesting for us is that of rental companies and television. Our first project is to introduce our new products to all potential customers in India, and improve our presence throughout the country, which must be stronger and more widespread. We are arranging to visit more customers and create events where we can present our products.

Clay Paky story is one of constant innovation and forward transformation, what according to you are the three main milestones in terms of product development in the history of Clay Paky? And what is your vision for the company for the next five years? I have already mentioned the products that have marked Claypaky’s history: the Astroraggi, the Golden Scan and the Sharpy. In 40 years, the market has changed many times, and Claypaky has been able to adapt to these changes and constantly remain in a top position in terms of size and reputation. The changes are ongoing and the future is full of challenges, but I am sure Claypaky will be able to overcome them, as it has done throughout its history. We have the resources, we have the know-how, we have mastered digitization, and we have the ideas. With the help of our parent company Osram, Claypaky will grow even more and will remain the industry leader.
