My Garage is a Museum of Bad Decisions

And a place only a car junkie could appreciate

Iam a lucky man, for 24 years ago I married a car girl. In our early years together, Kristan accompanied me to local car shows and meets, area cruises, club meets, and larger shows at Carlisle. Soon, we acquired her dream car, a ’65 Mustang convertible, which she eventually replaced with a ’72 Duster. Nowadays, being on her feet all day doesn’t agree with her, but she still enjoys participating in club meets and road rallies. Being married to a car girl is a blessing, for I seldom hear complaints about the time I spend in the garage, my frequent junkyard trips, or the boxes that regularly appear on our porch.

But as great as this sounds, being married to a car girl comes with a set of problems that I hadn’t anticipated. First, I can’t rely on her to be my financial conscience. As a car junkie, I’m on my own to manage and curb my addiction. Second, her addiction is nearly as strong as mine. Daily drivers aside, her “fun” cars include her ’72 Duster, a ’73 Road Runner, the 2001 Dakota that had belonged to her deceased brother, and her most recent acquisition, a ’79 Volare Duster.

Our other cars include a ’64 Dart, a couple of ’65 Darts, a ’67 Belvedere I fourdoor, a ’67 GTX, a ’68 Dart, a ’70 Challenger, and a ’70 GTX. I consider only one of these cars finished, and although it is a nice drive, it is far from a pampered show poodle. Of the remaining cars, all but two are drivable, and those two are major projects. Of course, I have been acquiring parts for the fleet for decades.

I have been into Darts since I was a teen, and I have owned my ’68 Dart since I was in high school. Back then, parts were relatively cheap and easy to find. I have spare doors, fenders, and other smaller items that I have been holding onto for 35-plus years. I also have a plethora of parts for the ’65 Darts, many of which came from a car I parted with nearly 20 years ago. Other parts, such as trim pieces and floor pan sections, have been junkyard, swap meet, and eBay scores over the last couple of decades.

Of course, we also have parts for vehicles that we no longer own. At one time, we had four ’64 Darts. I have a total of six spare fenders and several doors for the ‘64s we have owned, but now we are down to just one. It is a challenge to keep up with so many cars, but as the fleet becomes more diverse, our parts inventory must also change. I had never owned a post-1970 Plymouth Road Runner or Satellite, so we had almost nothing to fit Kristy’s Road Runner. I had to source fender braces, a trunk lid, sun visors, kick panels, and a few other interior bits from wherever I could find them. Considering that it is now nearly 50 years old and most of its siblings rusted away years ago, parts are both difficult to find and expensive.

I’m finding that sourcing parts for the Volare is even more difficult and expensive. Virtually nothing is being reproduced for it. Although it was a popular model when new, few survive today, so parts are scarce and expensive. The grille in Kristy’s car has a few chunks missing. If I could find a suitable replacement, it would likely cost upward of a thousand dollars. For the meantime, I located a badly broken grille in Virginia Beach, and I picked it up in person because I didn’t want to risk further damage during shipping. I will cut pieces from it and graft them into her grille.

Just yesterday, I began welding patches into a pair of fenders for the ’70 GTX. I now have a spare right side fender and three left side fenders for that car. Soon I will prepare the fenders for the ’67 GTX. I have one spare right side and two spare left side fenders for it. Resting on the ceiling joists of the garage are new quarter panels for both cars, along with rocker panels, outer wheel houses, and trunk extensions for the ’70 GTX. I also have a very nice hood. For my ’68 Dart I have at least two pairs of spare doors, more than half a dozen fenders, a nice hood, new quarter panels, outer wheel houses, trunk extensions, a left fender apron, a complete dashboard, and countless trim pieces. The situation is nearly the same for the Challenger, which is one of the two major projects. We are out of space, and I know that we have far more invested in some of these cars than we could get out of them unless I finish them.

From the outside it appears that I’m a lucky guy, and I know that I have been blessed. But I also know that some folks view me as either a fool or crazy — maybe both. A couple of years ago, our financial advisor compiled a list of our cars and their approximate values. From a monetary perspective, he seemed shocked by how deeply entrenched we are in the hobby, though I suspect he wouldn’t have batted an eye had we owned a boat of similar value. Even so, a few days ago, while attempting to move about the clutter, it occurred to me that our garage could be seen as a museum of bad decisions.

How many tens of thousands of dollars have Kristy and I spent on cars and parts over the nearly quarter of a century that we have been married? How much have I squandered over my lifetime? How could that money have served us better? I would like to believe that we understand money and manage it well, but do our automotive indulgences indicate that we are, in fact, financially irresponsible?

Kristy and I have accepted that this is our life together, and we are content in that life. We both realize that for us, cars are a lifestyle, and we wouldn’t want it any other way. Nearly all of our friendships have come about through our car connections, and many of our trips involve car clubs and other car friends. We don’t own an expensive beach home, we don’t take cruises or partake in other expensive travel, nor do we gamble, indulge in illegal drugs, or frequent bars. We also make it a point not to pursue boating, aviation, horses, or any other expensive hobby that might be considered more mainstream by the general population. (Our financial advisor cannot say the same!) Perhaps I’m rationalizing, but I suspect that the readers of Cruising won’t judge me too harshly.

The garage is long overdue for straightening and reorganizing, and I keep telling myself that I’m going to purge the stuff we no longer need via eBay or a listing on Facebook Marketplace. We need the room, and freeing up a few bucks would certainly help to feed our addiction. After all, museums rotate their displays by bringing in new items to replace those that have been retired. It is only fitting that we do the same.

Carolina In My Mind

The joy of driving roads less traveled

The TV show American Pickers premiered in 2010 with millions of viewers tuned in to see what great finds Mike Wolf and Frank Fritz would discover. For those of us with a penchant for finding treasures, this show was pure gold.

More than 300 episodes later, car guys and gals still have the dream of stumbling across some old, dilapidated barn with a dusty Plymouth Road Runner or 409 Chevy Impala tucked under the rafters, just like Mike & Frank have done. It’s the thrill of the treasure hunt and I think all of us have it inside of us to one extent or another.

For the past 2O years, I’ve made my share of trips to North Carolina to visit family but also to explore some small backroads leading to other backroads that eventually lead to houses and barns that time has passed by. I rarely have a clue where I am, but that doesn’t matter. I drive unhurried and gaze at the scenery in amazement. Homes more than a century old with wraparound porches and rocking chairs; 50-year-old tractors that still pull out old tree stump; families gathered out front sipping lemonade or maybe a bit of shine; and an 80-year-old rundown barn with an old classic car peeking out the back. It’s a scene I’ve pictured in my mind a thousand times, but to see it in real life leaves me longing for a simpler time when life was a bit slower.

After so many trips down south, I finally packed my bags six months ago, loaded up my truck, and hit the road in search of a new life. The decision wasn’t easy but, surprisingly, not too difficult either. My parents, that my sister Della and I cared for, are sadly gone now. My daughter Monica is grown, and I’ve been retired for years.

The question I kept asking myself is “If not now, then when?” The answer was now.

Whether admitted or not, all of us have developed a strong connection to our car friends over the years. We visit every weekend at local car shows or cruise nights, we get together for birthdays and holidays, we travel in groups, and we’re there for each other when a helping hand is needed. Our car friends have become our second family. Leaving them behind has been the most difficult decision of all. Yes, I’ve already made new friends and they’re terrific, but as the saying goes: “There’s no friends like old friends.”

While driving on North Carolina’s roads less traveled, I became aware that old Fords from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s littered the landscape much more frequently than other makes. Resident Byron Harward explained to me that Ford built a huge dealership network here after WW II — a network so large that it outnumbered Chrysler 10 to 1. That meant people drove Fords, their children drove Fords, and their grandchildren drove Fords — and many are still around, parked off to the side of the house, behind a barn, or still being driven.

Along with the old cars are old trucks. The American pickup truck has been a staple of rural America since the 1920s. Today, many people purchase them for show or to make country clubs jaunts. In North Carolina, they work as they were intended to. The year doesn’t matter — 1960s & 1970s F100s, 1980s square-bodied Chevys and even a few 1950s F-1 Fords

can be regularly seen carrying loads to the dump or lumber from the town hardware store. I can’t help but smile as I see these trucks earning a living for their owners 50+ years after they were first put into service.

Sadly, I don’t know how much longer some of these areas will remain rural. Trees are being bulldozed at an alarming rate and properties that once grew crops now grow townhomes. It’s not uncommon to see a $500,000 home adjacent to a 50-year-old trailer and older residents being forced out by higher property taxes. If you’ve ever dreamed of traveling these roads and seeing a completely different way of life, now is the time. Tomorrow may be too late.

My friend Mike Meads has a saying: “Old cars open doors.” What does it mean? It means that if you travel here to look at old cars and you’re driving an old car yourself, people will be much more welcoming and open their doors to you. If you’re driving modern iron, people will be incredibly suspicious of you pulling up in let’s say, a $100,000 Escalade. Either way, you don’t ever set foot on another person’s land lest you find out what a load of buckshot up your backside feels like. Enjoy the scenery, the cars, and the people, but don’t ever trespass.

The title of this article belongs to singer-songwriter James Taylor, but the sentiment belongs to many, including me.

SJ Classics Cars & Coffee

One of South Jersey’s premier classic emporiums held their inaugural cars and coffee for the 2023 season back in April. South Jersey Classics is not just about selling fine rides, it’s about staging a monthly C&C that attracts more than 150 rides each month. Like all super C&C car gatherings, it’s also a time for cruisers to come out and enjoy a hot cup of coffee and fresh donuts. Not to mention catch up on car conversations as well as getting back to seeing friends in the car community after a winter’s hiatus.

The endless summer of 2023 has plenty of fine events to keep our fellow car guys and gals busy and this is one of them.

Syracuse Nationals Worth The Drive

The largest car show in the Northeast is set for Syracuse, N.Y. as the 22nd annual Syracuse Nationals returns to the New York State Fairgrounds July 14-16. The three-day event features thousands of cars on display — most manufactured before 1993. Cars newer than 1993 are allowed to enter the show as part of American Muscle Sunday. Spring Carlisle A Home Run

A gorgeous weather week made Spring Carlisle 2023 an overwhelming success. From Wednesday to Sunday and every day in between, Carlisle was bustling with automotive excitement. Event highlights included a two-day classic and collector car auction presented by Carlisle Auctions, the automotive flea market, car corral, Manufactures Midway, AACA Car Club display, and the ARMO Hot Products Showcase. In total, the 8,100 spaces onsite were filled, including most spaces within the car corral. And the auction generated $6 million in sales. Best of all, everyone who came to Carlisle left with something, either a much-needed part, must have collectible, collector car, or great memories.

ANGIE’S CAR CRUISE

For those of us who appreciate the décor of the fabulous 1960s and ‘70s, there are not too many places to cruise back in time and enjoy the ambiance of days gone by. Well, there is a place that is located in Buena, N.J., called Angie’s Café and Custard. This aluminum diner has it all. Great food, nostalgic atmosphere and a car cruise that allows a cruiser to eat, relax and get ice cream. On a great day in April, more than 90 cruisers traveled out to a cool cruise located on Route 54.

During the off season of car activities, cruisers usually look for something automotive to keep the “juices” flowing. A few cruisers got together and made an appointment to go for a tour of a professional restoration facility. They agreed that watching a show-quality ride being constructed and being able to ask the proprietor questions can be a very motivating thing.

Evergreen Dairy Bar Cruise

The Evergreen Dairy Bar on Rt. 70 in Vincentown, N.J., has a weekly event that has rides cruising in from across the area to enjoy great food and a huge selection of dairy products. Cruisers gather early every Tuesday to get a great parking spot and partake in a cruise that brings out many types of rides. It’s another great place to enjoy the endless summer of 2023.

Enter Tom Rightler who is the owner/operator of Mid-Atlantic Muscle Cars located in Bridgeton, NJ. Rightler is no stranger to restoring muscle cars and has animpressive list of clients and accomplishments. It’s also safe to say his passion for the Chevelle served as special inspiration.

While at his shop, one guest (Jim Solomon) presented Rightler with his watercolor artwork depicting Rightler’s reconstructed General Lee. A walk-through had guests checking out an area that had an original contemporary Shelby Cobra frame ready for the body (as well as related parts) and assembly to be completed. Visiting a shop that specializes in classic and specialty rides is a great way keep the spirit alive and get to see another side of our hobby. Glasstown Brewery Cruise

Cruises are held in many neat locations. One such event was staged by the South Jersey Cruisers Association. The group is not a club, just a bunch of enthusiasts enjoying the hobby as a team.

The SJ Cruisers and the Glasstown Brewery in Millville, N.J. teamed to have their Brews and Cruise. This cruise was a day to enjoy an adult libation that came in many different varieties and listen to the music of DJ Chris Randazzo (WVLT 92.1 FM).

There were more than 85 cruisers who came out to relax and chill out to a day that saw lovely weather.

Asure sign that things are different from “back in the day of the so-called infancy of our hobby” is the cost to participate in car events. Now, before I dive into a potentially sensitive topic, I will put out the disclaimer that my comments do not entirely reflect my thoughts. They are based on conversations with fellow cruisers.

Back in the day when gasoline was more affordable, tanking up one’s cruiser was relatively painless on the wallet. Today, and as of this writing, regular gas is averaging $3.60 per gallon for regular and considerably more for higher- octane gasoline. A fulltank cost of $60 or more per event is a lot. The next cost is the fee to participate in a car show. Now, this topic is where yours truly uses my disclaimer card. Not too long ago, a registration fee of $10, $15 and, on occasion, $20, was the norm. Comments I hear from some cruisers are that $20 and $25 are to enter a car show are becoming commonplace. For the record, there is no standard fee to pay to play.

So, the discussion of what other factors bring up the cost of a participation fee pops up. I guess the cost of trophies can be considered; then again, how many trophies are given in relation to the cost is something to think about. When it comes to advertising, most promoters rely on flyers. Now, how much of a cost for how many becomes a question.

A point that is also brought to the table is sponsors. If one goes to an event and there is a sponsor t-shirt or list of sponsors, then isn’t a sponsor defined as a business or person who donates money to help defray some of the costs of a show? This brings us to the price of participation. The fees to register a car can be based on the promoter making a tidy amount off the top, or in smaller fees based on volume.

As I stated earlier, there are no set fees to enter a car event and there are many more variables than I have just mentioned. The good thing about our hobby is there are enough events that a car guy or gal can chose an event based on how much he/ she is willing to spend. As a matter of fact, events like cruises and cars and coffee are usually always free to attend.

Finally, do you charge a spectator or their family to check out a show? Some events can do so because of the many activities and components they offer, but for the standard car show, getting someone to pay a fee to walk through a lot full of rides that one can see free at most events just isn’t going to fly.

The cost structure of our hobby has become as diverse as the many types of rides that participate. At least, so far, the cost of fees is spread out enough to provide participants options.

Department of Finance: One expense that has no ceiling is the fun of enjoying the friendships and camaraderie at an event.

• PERIOD CORRECT CARS WITH REGISTRATION & INSURANCE ID

• NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

• NO VEHICLES MOVED ONCE PARKED

• NO PARTIALLY PRIMED VEHICLES

• NO TRAILERS IN SHOW AREA

• NO SPECIAL PARKING ARRANGEMENTS

• ALL VEHICLES MUST BE DRIVEN THROUGH GATE

• ALL VEHICLES MUST DISPLAY OFFICIAL WINDOW CARD DURING EVENT

• ALL NJ MOTOR VEHICLE LAWS WILL BE IN EFFECT & ENFORCED BY VINELAND POLICE DEPARTMENTS

• NO CRUISING AT END OF EVENT. HOWEVER ALL TRAFFIC LAWS APPLY IF YOU DO!

• NO BICYCLE RIDING DURING EVENT, MUST WALK BIKE OR YOU WILL BE BANNED FROM THE AVENUE AND ESCORTED AWAY BY POLICE.
