Wesley You can follow Wesley on Instagram: @morningstarwesley Wesley is currently studying at Trent University, Peterborough, as he works towards completing his Undergraduate in Indigenous Studies. He will then further his education by getting his Bachelor of Indigenous Education. He is of First Nations decent from Mississauga First Nation by Blind River, and he continues to look forward to learning more of his culture. He is looking forward to taking these teachings and applying them in his life and future classrooms! "Creation", A 16" x 20"Acryllic Painting

"Journey", A 16" x 20" Acryllic Painting

His style of art is taking the traditional concepts and mixing modern sensibilities to create something original. With his continuous learning of traditional stories, Wesley feels that he can depict new visual sensibilities, to bridge the cultural gap, to mix the tribal with the modern and to spotlight what has been ignored through his own visual journey. This need for self re-discovery serves as his greatest sense of inspiration, to create and understand his personal sense of identity.

Vision

The beginning idea for this project began in early Summer, 2021 and stemmed from my vision to transform my university’s hallways into a gallery dedicated to celebrating Indigenous student art. With help and inspiration from OUSA’s Home Office team, the idea transformed into creating this digital and print Look-book/Magazine- something that could be easily accessible for anyone to support. It is my honour to be able to highlight these wonderful Indigenous student artists (and one recent graduate!) in this project, where we can support each person’s unique creativity, enjoy coming together on a project from all across Ontario, and to share in our Indigeneity. Within our institutions, the academic and social culture does not make room for Indigenous Peoples, nor does it come close to adequate representation for Indigenous students. Through putting this project together, it has been an absolute pleasure to feel unified, to enjoy and learn from each featured artist’s creativity, and to celebrate our intersectionality and uniqueness, while coming together to celebrate. Through this project, I hope to inspire and apply pressure to our institutions across Ontario (and hopefully, across Canada) to immediately support the representation of Indigenous students and faculty, their art, experiences, history, and understanding, as a continuous commitment. Representation is the daily, ongoing commitment of honouring symbolism, academic practices, and campus culture that recognizes, celebrates, and respects Indigenous Peoples, land, and culture. This is a goal that generations of Indigenous Peoples have been fighting for, and it is a goal that I have learned to highlight and fight for in my work. - Emily DuBois Brooks
