Ready, Set, 7 Ways To Teach Your Kids To Focus & Tackle New Challenges By Christina Katz

We are living in an age of constant interruption. So when it comes to setting and accomplishing goals, kids who learn how to focus and concentrate have a distinct advantage over those who cannot. We need to help our children learn when to put their blinders on so they can apply goal setting to challenges of their choosing. Achieving personal goals helps kids channel their energy productively and inspires them become more confident action-takers in the future. Kids are not lazy or unmotivated these days; it is simply easier than ever for them to become distracted and disengaged. As a parent, encourage your children to practice healthy goal setting. Follow these suggestions and you will notice your kids stepping up to set and meet new challenges that bring smiles to their faces. As for your role, get ready to cheer them on and give them credit for their accomplishments as any good coach would.

1. Let them steer.

Encourage him to choose an age-appropriate, just out-of-reach goal. Be careful you don’t interject 6

Our Kids Magazine | August 2018

your own desires into this process. For a child who is unsure about what goal to set, be patient and offer choices until something appeals. You play a supporting role helping your child accomplish whatever goal is chosen, so it must be your child’s goal, not yours.

2. Emphasize fun.

If your child is overweight, nagging her about weight-loss is not going to help her choose it as a goal, and you just might scar her. Forget the problems you think your child needs to solve and emphasize the fun of setting and reaching goals instead. Let children who have become too sedentary in the past come up with goals, like joining a team or training for a race for the fun of it, not merely to get mom and dad off their backs. Share stories of goals you’ve set and met to inspire them, but don’t be a pushy parent.

3. Embrace strengths.

Every person has strengths and weaknesses. There are no exceptions to this rule. If you only mirror your child’s negative qualities and mention them often, Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

perhaps you have not spent enough time considering your child’s best qualities. There are not merely five or ten positive qualities that describe people; there are hundreds. Pick up a little book called Strengths Finder 2.0 by Tom Rath. Go through the book and circle the words you think describe your child. Mention these qualities often and watch your child’s confidence blossom.

4. Assist with challenges.

Offer yourself as a sounding board when kids run into challenges reaching goals, but don’t solve problems for them. Listen to their concerns instead and ask questions. Get them thinking about various approaches they could try. Instead of telling them what to do, ask if they think any of your ideas are helpful. Don’t give in to internal pressure to unstick a stuck child. Brainstorm with them and then let them motivate themselves.

5. Praise progress.

If your child is continually focused outward, measuring where he or she stands in comparison to others robs him of personal power. Instead of encouraging your child to be the generic best, encourage your child to achieve his or her personal best. Celebrate the fruition of this expression no matter how it measures up with others. A ribbon for Most Improved can be viewed as just as valuable as First Place or MVP.

6. Uncover silver linings.

Just as strengths can be discovered and flexed for increasing success, weaknesses should be acknowledged and honored, too. Respecting weaknesses rather than denying them or trying to correct them may seem strange. But consider whether or not the investment of time and energy to turn weaknesses around is worthwhile. Sometimes flaws teach kids valuable things they need to learn. For example, a forward who can’t score, might make a better midfielder on the soccer field. A dancer who can’t do acrobatic tricks might have a strong sense of showmanship on stage. A scattered student in the classroom might be a talented artist in the studio. Teach your child to forgive weaknesses and pursue undervalued abilities they may be pointing towards, instead.

7. Play the long game.

As your child focuses on setting and reaching personal goals, things may not always go quite the way anyone expected. Life has a way of bringing twists and turns to the table. This means short-term victories don’t always pan out as expected, even after time and energy Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

Book Review Summer weather is heating up! Take some time to cool off inside with your little one and a new book. After all, reading to your preschool child is the best thing you can do to foster literacy once they start school, AND it’s fun! What more could you ask for?! When Fur and Feather Get Together, by David Margrave, illustrated by Kim Wyly. Clovercroft Publishing, 2018. San Antonio author David Margrave debuts with this beautifully illustrated picture book about a boy, his dad, and a quiet conversation they have on a hill one night. In gentle, rhythmic verse, the two discuss the unique names for different animal families, providing readers with some fascinating facts (a group of owls is called a “parliament”) while also reassuring children with themes of love, self-worth, and belonging. Vivid colors and captivating expressions on the animals’ faces will endear this story to little ones! A perfect story for bedtime or for reading with siblings. For more information, go to https://whenfurandfeathergettogether. com/shop/ Marigold & Daisy, written and illustrated by Andrea Zuill. Sterling Children’s Books, 2018. Families expecting a new sibling will enjoy this sweet, funny story about Marigold, a snail who’s doing just fine, thank you, until her adorable baby sister Daisy is born. Predictably but oh-so-accurately, it seems EVERYONE loves Daisy - except Marigold, who reaches her breaking point when Daisy (an “evil genius”, according to her sister) destroys her favorite toy. Charming, expressive watercolor images of a lovable insect world elevate this story’s appeal, as does the unexpected, funny resolution. This one will be asked for again and again as a read-aloud! Colorfull: Celebrating the Colors God Gave Us, by Dorena Williamson. Illustrated by Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu. B&H Publishing Group, 2018. In this beautifully illustrated story, best friends Imani and Kayla, along with Imani’s Granny Mac, talk about the beauty of nature’s colors, including the many colors of people’s skin. Granny Mac guides the children to celebrate their diversity and uniqueness rather than be “colorblind”. Families will enjoy the innocent truths encouraged here, and the optimistic approach to human relations is refreshing. For more information, go to http://www.bhpublishinggroup.com/products/ colorfull The Barefoot Guide of Children, written by Tessa Strickland and Kate DePalma; illustrated by David Dean. Barefoot Books, 2016. If circumstances prevent you from traveling the world with your kids this - or any - summer, The Barefoot Guide of Children has to be the next best thing! In this large-format, non-fiction picture book, children are introduced to other children all over the world and invited to think about their similarities and differences. The book explores daily routines of home, family, play, and religion in multiple cultures, illuminating them through vibrant, detailed illustrations. Kids and families will get lost in this book, and are likely to spend hours examining the pictures and talking about the details they learn. A simply wonderful way to spend a summer - or spring, fall, or winter - afternoon. AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY

Dressed, Fed, and Out the Door! By Sandi Haustein

Your husband hits the snooze button for the third time, you haven’t even thought about what to pack in your kids’ lunches, they’re still sleeping and need showers, and everyone has to be out the door in fifteen minutes. Sound like mornings at your house? It doesn’t have to. With these time-saving tips, you can reduce the stress of your family’s rushed mornings. Get a head start the night before. Anything you can do ahead of time will help in the AM when time is tight. Start right after school by making sure all homework papers go right back in each child’s backpack after assignments are finished. Each evening, make sure your kids have put their backpacks in a designated morning spot, taken baths or showers, and laid out their next day’s clothes. Then, all they have to do when they wake up is get dressed, eat breakfast, and stop by their morning spot for everything they need to take to school. Say no to Mr. Snooze Button. If you’re not a morning person, consider going to bed at a decent hour so you’ll be less tempted to sleep in (and in andin). Tracy Webb, a self-described night owl and mother of two, enjoys staying 10

Our Kids Magazine | August 2018

up late but admits that her family’s mornings run a lot smoother if she goes to bed by 10:30 PM and gets up as soon as her alarm goes off. When you get a full night’s sleep, you wake up refreshed and ready to face whatever your day holds. Teach your older children to get ready on their own. Taking charge of a morning routine is an important step in your children’s growing independence. Train your kids to pick out school clothes, fix an easy breakfast, brush their teeth and their hair, and get shoes and coats on – all by themselves. This way, you can focus on finishing any last-minute morning tasks or helping younger children get ready. Divide and conquer. If your kids are too young to get ready on their own, split morning responsibilities with your spouse like Leia Rayman does. While Leia showers, her husband, Cory, feeds breakfast to their infant daughter, Janelle, lays her back down for a short nap, packs her bag for the sitter, and leaves for work. Leia is then free to finish getting ready before waking Janelle up, dressing her, and dropping her off with the sitter on her way to work. If you Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY have multiple young children, try playing man-to-man: each of you take one child to feed, dress, and get to daycare or school. Make mass batches of your family’s go-to sandwiches. Thirty minutes is all it takes to fill your freezer with a big batch of sandwiches that will last a couple of weeks. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches freeze great in individual sandwich bags, and ham or turkey work, too, if you hold the mayo (try a little butter for moisture instead). The frozen sandwich acts as an ice pack for the rest of the lunch but thaws by lunchtime. Add in a prepackaged yogurt, a piece of fruit, and a juice box, and you have a healthy lunch that’s easy to grab and pack in a hurry. Institute a “No breakfast until shoes are tied” rule. In Carolyn Brednich’s house of four boys, breakfast used to be the time-zapper of their morning. As the boys laughed and dawdled at the breakfast table, the minutes ticked by, leaving them in a rush to get dressed and gather backpacks. Now, the kids have to be completely dressed with shoes on before they can sit down to eat. Since implementing this rule, Carolyn’s sons stay focused on getting ready quickly. “Boys are always hungry, so breakfast is a good motivator to hurry up!” she says. You can implement the same type of rule with technology. If your kids waste time texting or watching TV in the morning, allow

them electronics privileges only after they are completely ready for the day. Expect the unexpected. Whether your kindergartener spills milk at breakfast or your teen forgets his backpack at home, the unexpected happens, even with the perfect routine in place. Emily Hanauer, a mother of four, says, “Don’t beat yourself up if things don’t go perfectly. Sometimes my kids have to buy lunch because I didn’t realize we were out of bread, or my four-year-old wears his favorite shirt three days in a row because I don’t want to fight him over it. Some things just aren’t a big deal in the long run.” Try setting your departure time ten minutes earlier than needed to account for the occasional flat tire or that forgotten backpack. These things will make your mornings less stressful, but remember what’s most important: your mood, as the parent, sets the tone for the day. Take a tip from Emily: “No matter how crazy it is or how late we are running, I always stop and give each of my kids a giant hug before we get in the car. I want their day to start on a good note, knowing that I love them.” Now that sounds like something worth waking up for. Sandi Haustein is a freelance writer and mom of four. She prides herself on getting her kids to the bus stop on time.

How Families can Juggle After-School Activities By Sarah Lyons

School mornings are busy but an experienced mom knows the real rush is after school when the evening is packed with extracurricular activities. One child has scouts, another has piano lessons, and two have soccer practice on opposite sides of town. As a mom of six, I have survived busy weeks full of extracurricular activities and a calendar that can only be described as complicated. Whether you have two or ten kids here are some tips from a mom with a busy family.

Limit activities

The best way to keep your calendar from getting too full is not to fill it. Try cutting back on the activities you allow your child to sign up for.Time at practice can be reduced by allowing kids only one sport per season.

However, sports aren’t the only activity that can take up a lot of time. Theater, music, scouts, and dance can also fill your free time. If your child has interests in both sports and the arts try allowing one sport and one other activity at a time. Limiting activities will leave more time for rest and time at home.

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY Tag team When multiple kids’ activities conflict, split up the time. Have one parent take a child to a birthday party while the other attends the ball game for another child. Use the help of others, particularly for practices and rehearsals. Set up a carpool with other families and take turns giving kids rides to and from to limit your time in the car. Don’t feel guilty if you cannot be at every single event. If you miss one here or there, you can attend next time. Your child will not remember if you were at every game, just that you made the effort to be there the majority of the time.

OPEN HOUSE Come see why more families are choosing Brooks!

Command Center A carefully maintained family calendar is key to keeping everyone organized and where they need to be on time. Some families like to have a large calendar in a central location in the home, like a command center. Others may like to use technology to track their comings and goings. Each family will find what method works best for them The important part is that it is accurate and up-to-date.

Protect your down time Families who are constantly on the go need to be protective of their down times. Having time for resting and relaxation is necessary to recharge and reconnect. Busy families may find it helpful to schedule family time on the master calendar so that the time doesn’t get filled up with other activities.

Plan ahead Once you have your activities limited and your calendar set, the best way to survive the busiest days is to plan ahead as much as possible. For busy nights, plan easy on-the-go meals and snacks. Freezer meals, crock pot recipes, and simple weeknight dinners that are prepped and prepared ahead of time will save you a lot of worry about getting your family properly fed and to practice on time. Pack up as many items as possible the night before so that you are not rushing around at the last minute trying to locate lost shoes and sports gear. There are multiple benefits to participation in extracurricular activities but overdoing it can cancel out many of them. Choose activities that your children truly enjoys and make sure there is still time to enjoy time together doing things you love outside of those activities. Your Child’s Checkup 10 Tips to Prepare Parents & Kids By Dr. Chrystal de Freitas

Well child checkups are a routine part of your child’s life; in fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a yearly visit for all children over the age of one. Though sometimes dreaded by the child (and therefore the parent), these visits are really opportunities to follow their growth, development, nutrition, bedwetting, parenting, and, of course, vaccinations. Here are some tips to help prepare both parents and children to get the most out of their appointment:

For Children:

■■Let your child know before the scheduled appointment

that they will be visiting the doctor to make sure that their body is healthy. Positioning the visit in a positive manner should help to alleviate any fear that something may be wrong. Children who are more sensitive may agonize for days before their checkup, so use your best judgment as to how far in advance you will let them know about the visit.

■■Ask your child to be a participant in the process. Make a

list of topics that you feel they may want to review. Include some fun achievements that you may want to share on your child’s behalf with the provider such as a recent award, team participation, or a great dental checkup. Getting them involved will help to empower them.

■■Many children like to play out their visit beforehand. Try

providing your child with a doctor’s kit to get them familiar with what may happen at the appointment. A picture book about going to the doctor can also help to alleviate fear that the child may have about the unknown. Keep in mind that all good nurses will review in detail all that she or he will be doing along the way. Letting your child know that there should be no big surprises should help to reassure them.

■■If your child is anxious about shots, let him or her know

that the doctor will help decide what is best and that vaccines exist to help keep the body healthy. Depending on the child’s personality and temperament, you may want to either let them know beforehand about the possibility of shots, or leave it up to the doctor to discuss.

■■Be positive, but don’t lie. There is no need to say, for

instance, that a shot won’t hurt. Of course it hurts, but certainly not as bad as a child usually imagines it. To help put it in perspective, you can teach your child the concept

18

Our Kids Magazine | August 2018

of the pain being on a scale from 0-10: “0” is no pain while “10” is very painful. Let your child know that a shot is about a 2 or 3 on the pain scale so they can grasp that though there will be a little pain, it won’t be great. Most pre-school children can understand this concept.

For Parents:

■■Arrive early so there is plenty of time to do the paper work

and avoid the stress of rushing around. Your child can play in the waiting room while you check in.

■■Come prepared! Don’t forget to bring your child’s immu-

nization card to the visit, as keeping track of vaccines and updating your records is vital for school entrance. Also update your child’s health history, allergies, or other concerns that you may have. Making a list before hand can help you remember all of the key updates once you arrive.

■■Don’t make false promises that there won’t be shots if you

know there will be just to ease your child’s fear. If your child is particularly anxious about the possibility of a shot, speak to your physician. There are numbing creams, sprays, breathing techniques and other approaches to managing their anxiety. Even just telling a joke or talking about a funny memory can do wonders!

■■Avoid excessive reassurance, apologies or criticism if your

child is distressed. A sense of calm acceptance on the parent’s behalf goes a long way in providing comfort.

■■Last, but most importantly, plan time to celebrate in your

own way with your child after the checkup. This could be lunch out, an ice cream cone, a small toy or treat, a special errand together. Take advantage of the opportunity to spend time with your child one on one.

Your child’s checkup can serve as a wonderful way to show them how proud you are to be their parent. For parents, it can offer support should you have a particular concern, question, or topic you’d like to discuss. As we often hear, it truly does take a village to raise a child: don’t be afraid to make your child’s pediatrician a vital part of that village. Dr. Chrystal de Freitas is an author, mother, and pediatrician with a special interest in health education. While Jake’s Kindergarten Checkup is her first picture book, she has authored several other well received books and educational material in her field. The ABC’s of a Successful School Year By Pam Molnar

A successful school year is as easy as learning your ABCs. Check out these 26 simple tips for a happy and healthy school year.

A

H

B

I

ccept new challenges – Push your child to go outside of his comfort zone. Encourage him to try activities, learn new sports and make new friends. reakfast – We all know breakfast is an important meal. If your child does not have time for a sit-down breakfast, provide on-the-go breakfast foods like muffins, fruit or protein bars.

C

elp your child, but don’t do it for him – We want our children to succeed, but they will never learn if we do it for them. It is okay to give suggestions, but remember that it is their name on the paper. llness – It’s back to school and back to a room full of germs. Stock your child’s backpack or desk with tissues and hand sanitizer. Remind them to wash their hands and to sneeze into their arm.

hores –Give your child a few jobs that you expect done each day before or after school such as making her bed or feeding the dog. A little bit of responsibility will go a long way.

J

K

E

L

F

B

owntime – Be sure to add free time to their schedule. These are the times your child can relax on the couch, play video games or have a last minute pickup game with friends in the neighborhood. xercise – Balance your child’s sedentary school day with plenty of exercise outside after school. Combine unstructured play with friends with a more structured team practice. riends – Encourage your child to invite new friends over so you can get to know the person your child is spending time with. It is a great opportunity to meet the friend’s parents, too.

G

rab and Go Snacks – Your child will be hungry after school. Instead of grabbing a handful of cookies, provide them with pre-bagged healthy snacks that won’t interfere with the dinner hour. Think veggies and dip or hummus and crackers. 20

Our Kids Magazine | August 2018

oin - Encourage your child to join activities at school. It gives them a sense of belonging and they will be more than just another face in the crowd. eep Trying – It is hard to see your child not get the role, position or grade that he hoped for. Encourage your child to pick himself back up and try again. Disappointment builds character and gives them the tools to succeed. imitations - Only you know your child’s limitations. While being a part of extracurricular activities is important, sometimes they are overwhelming. It’s okay to say no to invitations and extra practice when you see your child is overwhelmed. e Mindful of Others’ Feelings – Think before you say it and apologize if it comes out wrong. Practice “the more the merrier” when making plans and include new friends in your group.

N

utrition – Plan healthy meals ahead of time. Stock up on ingredients for quick healthy meals that your family enjoys. Save time by using the crockpot or prepping food ahead of time. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

As they travel through the exhibit, kids will be invited to SEE, BE, and DO the future—designing future cities, shaping community values, role playing future careers, and more. Exhibit runs thru Jan 5, 2019. The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway St. https://www. thedoseum.org/DTT

They’re the world’s largest pollinator of food crops, and of course, they provide a delicious source of sweet nutrition to humans and Pooh bears alike. But over the past decade, alarming reports have arisen about declines in the bee population worldwide. What would a world without bees look like? Could we even begin to replace the work they do? And on a local level, how can we best ensure bees are free and safe to do Mother Nature’s work? Numerous speakers, and boxed lunches from Spice of Life catering will be available for purchase. Free and open to the public. Doors open at 11:30; talks 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. Pearl Studio, 200 E. Grayson St. Suite 115.
