Tackling the School Supply List By Meagan Ruffing

I’m new to this school thing. My oldest is going in to second grade so I’ve only had one year of buying school supplies under my belt. I will tell you, I was on it the first year. Waiting for that school supply list was like Christmas morning for me. I couldn’t wait to tackle the necessities needed for my son’s first year of school. I bought the best of the best and even tucked in a few sheets of “Bravo!” stickers for his teacher. Oh, you too? Fast forward to the summer before his second grade school year and I’m already finding ways to save on his long list of supplies. Here’s a few clever ways to save on your kid’s pencils and erasers, pencil box and crayons and yes, even those pricey dry erase markers.

1.

Shop early. Most, if not all of your kids’ supplies are on sale during the summer. Stores are trying to get rid of old inventory to make room for the new, hot off the press products. I didn’t know this until I started paying attention to those clearance items while doing my weekly grocery trips. I started picking up post-it notes that somehow found their

6

Our Kids Magazine | August 2019

way onto to the shelves with $1 price stickers. The only difference between those and the $3-4 post-it notes were the colors. Light blue over neon blue? Sure, I’ll take the light blue for more than half the price.

2.

Stock up. I’m not one to keep an inventory in my closet of ‘just in case’ gifts or ‘ooh, someone might like this someday’ trinkets but I know a good deal when I see one. Towards the end of the school year last year, I found those super expensive Trapper Keeper-type things on sale for $3. Prior shopping trips with friends who had older children and were way more versed in this area than I at the time – had balked at the cost of these things. They were upwards of $13-15 and with multiple kids…well, you get the point. I had no clue if my son would in fact, need one of these but I thought, heck, he can always use it at home for some sort of activity. So in the cart it went.

3.

Reuse. Remember how I told you that I bought the best of the best that first year? Once I saw how many pencils came back with my son at the end of the school year, I thought, there’s no way I’m buying another 24 pencils when I have somehow accumulated over 50. We spent an afternoon sharpening all of these pencils during quiet time and put them nicely in his new 50 cent pencil box. Old with the new…I like that.

4.

Buy generic when you can. I usually leave the name brand stuff alone if I know the off-brand works just as well. I will also shop around if I’m already out and about running other errands. I don’t make special trips to find better prices but just the other day I found myself at Office Max getting some things printed when I saw a great sale on crayons. I picked up a few boxes and thought the cashier had actually rung them up wrong; they were even cheaper than what the sign advertised. Score!

5.

Resale shops. I never thought to scope out the local resale shops for back-to-school items but I was super excited when I found not one but two backpacks that were in pristine condition for less than $5 each. Once I saw how beat up my son’s got after just one year of school (not to mention I had paid $20 + on this specific superhero backpack) I quickly bought those and they are now ready to go for his 2nd grade year and his sister’s second year of preschool. Now I won’t feel so bad when my kids come home with broken zippers and rips and tears from being at school all day.

6.

Donate if you can. I like saving money. But if I do find school supplies at a good price, I like to buy a few more and donate them to my kids’ teachers just in

case there are any kids who can’t afford school supplies or maybe forgot theirs on the first day of school.

7.

Dry erase markers. Don’t you wish you could just erase some of those high prices from the packaging of these super expensive school supplies? Why are these markers so expensive? I don’t know the answer to that question but I do know how to save a little bit on these. First, always stock up if you see them on sale (summertime) and second, buy in bulk. It will be more money up front but cheaper per marker. Or, you can always split the package with a friend whose kids need the markers as well. Your kids are ready to head back to school and with the help of this neat little list, you can feel good about supplying them with just what they need to start the school year off right. Grab a friend, load your kids in the car, and head out early for your school supplies this year. If you’re late to the game, no worries, they’ll be another school year starting before you know it. Time for School School Tips From The Experts By Christa Melnyk Hines

As families prepare their students for the school season, educators weigh in on best practices for managing the transition back to school.

Get into a routine. Before school starts, adjust your child’s bedtime and wake them up five to 10 minutes earlier each day leading up to the first day. Also, post a morning task chart. “By making a visual schedule, kids know what is expected and check off the pictures or word phrases as they do each one,” says Tara Walrod, a school counselor. If your child is ready on time, offer rewards like free time before school.

Plan ahead. “Try and pick a day to get school supplies or school clothes when less people are shopping to help enjoy the time together,” suggests Molly Gafney, a fifth grade teacher. Log in to your school’s website. “Most districts post everything from PTA information to upcoming events to curriculum information and even videos and power points,” says Steve Cook, a director of curriculum and instruction. “Clicking on those links only takes a few minutes, but the information gained will be priceless.”

Orient your child. Schedule a school tour with the school counselor or principal if you are new to the community or if your child has special needs, which can heighten their sense of anxiety, advises fifth grade teacher Anne Braun. Attend back-to-school events like Sneak-a-Peeks, meet-and-greets, and school orientations. These are “a great way for students to walk around the building, get comfortable with their surroundings and re-connect or meet new friends,” says middle school principal Shelly Nielsen.

Discuss fears. Listen to your child’s concerns about the upcoming year. Offer strategies to help them work through them. For example, middle schoolers often worry about opening 8

Our Kids Magazine | August 2019

their lockers. Give them a combination lock to help them practice. “If they are worried about making new friends, act out how to approach someone new or start a new conversation,” Gafney says. Also, ask the school counselor for ideas. “Many times, schools assign new students peer mentors the first few days of school,” Nielsen says.

Practice drop-off.

Hash out transportation details with your child before school starts. If you plan to drive your child to school, do a dry run. “Make sure your child is getting out of the correct side of the car, can shut the door themselves, and knows where the front door is located,” recommends Jessica Adair, a school counselor.

Consider health matters.

To help your child stay healthy throughout the year, make sure they get adequate rest and stay hydrated. “When you’re feeling sick, stay home. You want to spread love with your friends, but you don’t want to spread germs!” says school nurse Destinee Peghee, RN, BSN, MBA. Most schools require kids are fever-free for 24 hours before returning to the classroom.

Encourage independence.

Many parents walk their kids in on the first day of school. After that, encourage your child to walk to class on their own to help them build a sense of independence and responsibility. “We like for boys and girls to feel that sense of accomplishment and pride by successfully making their way to their classrooms on their own by the second week of school,” Walrod says. As kids approach middle school, encourage them to advocate and take responsibility for themselves. “Allow your child to be more responsible for completing homework, packing their own lunches and cleaning/organizing their backpacks,” Braun says. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Celebrate the first day. Many families take photos in the same place every year. Others plan first day celebrations by visiting the ice cream counter or a favorite restaurant or picnic with other families at a nearby playground. “I love when families have rituals around the first day of school,” says Brian Watson, an elementary school principal. “These rituals are counted on every year to help a child relax and know that it will be a good year.”

HEALTHY KIDS NEEDED FOR A STUDY ON BRAIN DEVELOPMENT

Manage through bad days. After a long day at school, your child might come home feeling irritable, tired or frustrated with a problem. “Listen and empathize. Be careful not to jump in too quickly or overreact to what is really a small problem or conflict,” Walrod advises. Instead, encourage creative problem-solving. If your child is complaining of anxiety-related tummy aches, make a plan with the school nurse or counselor. “The most important thing is to get your student in the building,” Peghee says. “Don’t let them talk you into leaving-they’ll have stomach aches for the next two months.” A daily phone check-in with you or a few minutes in the nurse’s office before school can help your child manage their anxiousness, Peghee says.

Connect with teachers. “Every educator wants every child to literally RUN to school because they can’t wait to be there,” Watson says. “When that isn’t the case, we want to work with you to try and figure out how we can work together to help lower your chid’s anxiety and get into learning.” Share your child’s interests and hobbies to help teachers zero in on what gets your student excited about learning. Always contact your child’s teacher or principal if you need clarification on anything or to discuss any concerns. AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY

A Guide to Choosing After School Activities By Karissa Tunis

As kids continue to grow and develop, you will find that they often enjoy exploring more of their own personal interests. Sure school offers opportunities for children to get involved with different types of educational and social activities, but most of the time these options are more general in nature. After school programs are excellent because they tend to offer more specific classes that focus on a particular topic. These programs are often lead or taught by experts in that field, which allows the student to dive deeper and to really improve upon their skills. I am a firm believer in allowing children to explore a variety of sports and activities before selecting just one or two that will fill-up all of their evenings. Not only does this open their eyes to many wonderful possibilities, but they just might surprise themselves and discover that they have a hidden talent. They might even realize that they actually do like running 10

Our Kids Magazine | August 2019

around outside with a team, or getting creative in the art studio. Not only will they meet more people, but they will be exposed to different environments (outside, inside, in a classroom, on a field, in the woods, etc.). They will learn new things like teamwork, survival skills, new terminology, new technology, & different skill-sets. They will become more rounded and better educated within their community, and better understand all that it has to offer. In order to do this though, consider looking for programs that are 2-3 month commitments, as opposed to programs that run for the length of the entire school year. This should give your child enough time to really dive into an activity and realize if they actually like it or not. And if not, then at least you are not obligated to finish out the rest of the year. Obviously if your child wasn’t a fan of soccer, you will most likely sign them up for something very Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY different when the next registration time rolls around. But if they really enjoyed gymnastics, consider signing them up for something similar, like cheerleading. But don’t just think about the common sports. There are dozens of other options - music classes, art courses, STEM sessions, archery, fishing, bird watching, Scouts, knitting, crafting, cooking, horseback riding, photography, drama, and so much more! Below are a few things to consider when trying to decide what is right for you, your child, and your family.

Explore Your Options

While some schools do offer separate after school programs, there are also a lot of other options out there. Before you make a decision, take the time to do a little research. Then sit down as a family and discuss the possibilities before deciding which one to commit to. Also, many programs offer a free trial class. When calling around, be sure to ask if they offer one as well. It’s always a great idea to try before you buy! ■■Find out what classes/courses your local

schools, rec center, community buildings, youth

associations, indoor sports complex, and local clubs are offering. ■■Once you narrow down your interests, look at which facilities offer what it is that you are looking for. ■■Consider the timing of the class - what time/day is this program offered? Does a parent need to stay, or can they drop-off? Will there always be someone available to provide the transportation? ■■Cost - keep in mind that some activities may require additional funds beyond the program itself. Do you need to purchase special equipment, a uniform, etc? ■■ ■■Once you have taken all of this into consideration,

hopefully the right decision will be more clear. And if you are only committing to a few weeks rather than all year, that should hopefully take some of the pressure off of making the perfect choice, and give you the flexibility to be more daring with your selection. Again, it’s fun to try new things. A little challenge can be good at times. And if it’s not working out as expected, the flexibility to just move onto something else is wonderful.

AFTER-SCHOOL DIRECTORY Evaluate As You Go

■■Is my child handling the demands of their schedule both

While activities do have their benefits, they can also take away quality time that could be spent with family, on homework, at church, etc. We all strive to find the perfect balance, but it can be tough to obtain. When trying new activities, or when trying to decide if you should register again and keep moving up/forward through the program, I would encourage you to pause and ask yourself these questions: ■■Is my child really enjoying or benefiting from this activity? ■■Is it worth the time that we are missing from being at home as a family?

There is no harm in waiting another month, or year, before jumping back in. After school programs are meant to be fun! But they are not required. Why After-School Programs Are Great For Kids Tanni Haas, Ph.D.

As the new school year begins, parents ask themselves whether or not they should enroll their kids in an after-school program. The answer is a resounding “Yes!” Experts agree that after-school programs not only boost kids’ academic performance, they also enhance their social and emotional development, as well as their overall health and well-being.

Academic Performance

Kids who attend after-school programs tend to do better academically than those who don’t. They pay more attention in class, are more involved in classroom discussions, develop stronger study habits, and earn higher test scores. Researchers believe that’s because they spend more time doing homework and get the material explained by a wider variety of adults with different teaching styles. After-school programs generally offer more hands-on, experiential ways of learning, which are great for many kids. In addition to their academic tutoring, most after-school programs also offer different extra-curricular activities like art, music, and sports. These activities also have a positive impact on their academic performance. When kids discover they have a particular talent, they gain self-confidence and that translates into better classroom behavior and performance. They also learn important time-management skills. When kids have homework to finish but are looking forward to a favorite activity, they learn how to manage their time so that they can do both.

Social and Emotional Development

After-school programs are great for social and emotional development. Kids spend considerable time interacting with kids other than their regular classmates, including with kids from different grades. This teaches them important interpersonal skills and how to make new friends. They also learn much from the extra-curricular activities. Whether they’re working together on an art project, a music performance, or are preparing for a sports competition, kids learn how to support one another and solve problems through teamwork. These are extremely valuable lessons that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Almost all professional jobs require good communication and conflictresolution skills, and the ability to work well with others. Health and Wellness Finally, attending an after-school program is excellent for their overall health and well-being. Most after-school programs teach kids about proper nutrition, engage them in physical activities that are good for their health, and offer them healthy snacks - all in a safe and structured learning environment. Researchers have concluded that kids who attend after-school programs regularly are less obese than their peers.

10 Things to Know Before the End of Maternity Leave By Pam Moore

#1: Don’t show pictures of the baby to all your coworkers. They might inquire, “How’s the baby?” Before you whip out your smartphone, try and remember your pre-baby life. While you keep from weeping for the days of happy hour cocktails and dry clean only clothing, think back to how it felt to feign interest in the children of your friends and co-workers… Don’t be that person. #2 Don’t stress about pumping at work. I mean, why would you be stressed out about attaching a suction device to your nipples while you sit in a room HR has assured you is “private,” except for the absence of a lock on the door, while milk spurts into bottles attached to your engorged breasts, to the tune of Wee-WAH… Wee-WAH… Wee-WAH…? Seriously though, it will work out. #3 Don’t automatically eliminate caffeine just because you are breastfeeding. Disclaimer: I’m a blogger, not a doctor, but I would advise giving coffee a try and see how what happens before you put the kibosh on this daily ritual. (And by daily ritual I mean survival tactic). If you have to eliminate it, I’m sorry for your loss. But you never know—It might be just fine. Also, you might never make the connection when strangers remark that your baby is “so alert” as you sip your latte. #4: Do check references before hiring a sitter. Because when the reference wonders aloud, “Would it kill her to load up the dishwasher without being asked?” do not be surprised to come home to the sitter’s Diet Coke can on your only nice piece of furniture and a sink full of empty bottles. She’ll report the baby slept “fine” and drank “a few bottles” as she walks out the door. So take your time. When you find the reference who says, “We LOVE this woman” it doesn’t matter if you met her at a bar. She will be the one to take your child to the park, make art projects out of Jell-O, and tidy your house. You’ll wish you worked full-time just so your kid can stay with her every day. #5: Do review diaper changing with your sitter. I don’t care if she has “night nurse for triplets” on her resume. Just smile and say something like, “I know this is ridiculous, but if you would humor me, let’s change a diaper, so you’ll know where the diapers and wipes are. Sorry, I am a neurotic new mom!” It pains me to say it, but many people don’t know the front from the back of a diaper. I don’t know how many times I have been puzzled to find my child has soaked through her diaper overnight only to find the sitter put it on backward. #6: Do give your sitter a 30-minute warning before you come home. This gives her a chance to do the things she should have done while the baby was napping, like fold that basket of laundry and wipe down the high chair tray. If she’s awesome and did those things already, she now has plenty of time to put away the books 18 Our Kids Magazine | August 2019

and toys your child has strewn about. The moment you walk into a clean house after working all day- that little moment makes it all worthwhile. Oh, and when your baby smiles and bounces upon seeing your face, that’s pretty good too. #7: Do take your lunch break. Because isn’t lunch the whole point of work? It is fantastic if you just love work, but I don’t. I like work but I love chatting with my co-workers over lunch. Also, I have a thing for the cafeteria coconut cream pie. If you are away from your cherub for eight to nine hours, what’re another 30 minutes or so if it means your workday has a fun part that involves gossip and pie? #8: Do get everything ready the night before. It’s hard enough to get out the door when you just need to kiss the baby one last time (ten times). Add a 5:30 am nursing session, another at 7:45, and a diaper change (or two), and you will appreciate any spare second you can find. The night before, lay out your outfit. If you can shower at night without suffering from crazy morning hair, do it. Prep the coffee ready the night before. PS Why doesn’t Babies R Us carry Keurigs? #9: Do leave for work before your partner, if schedules allow. And not just because you get sensitive when your child jumps into the sitter’s arms and hardly notices you leaving. If you’re a chatterbox and your partner is a “less is more” talker, leaving a note is more time efficient than hanging around while the sitter reads said note, then telling her everything you already wrote, giving her a tour of the fridge, and chatting about the weather when your husband could have done the hand-off in three minutes, and all you would have had to do was trust that everything would be fine and the sitter would text you with any questions. #10: Do remember that this too shall pass. Which I know, is practically impossible at 2 am after you’ve been up with a crying baby and then you get back into bed, turn to your partner and say, “You’re sleeping! I can tell by your breathing. You’re not the only one who has to work tomorrow!” and then loudly fluff your pillow. And when you wake up the next day with sand for eyeballs, the vibe is less “This too shall pass” and more “I feel like a prisoner of war.” But it will pass, I promise. And if my promise is not enough, have a glass of wine. After work, that is. Pam Moore helps women push through fear to become their best selves.
