The Costume Conundrum By Meagan Ruffing

Ask my 4-year-old daughter Ellie what she wants to be for Halloween and she’ll tell you a cat. Ask her the next day and she’ll tell you a witch. Wait a few more days and then ask her again. She’ll tell you a mermaidcat-witch. You get the idea. I’ve dealt with this costume conundrum for the past 10 years with all three of my kids. It’s been one of the most hilarious and expensive Halloween-inspired parenting battles I’ve experienced thus far. As cute as it is to see my little girl change her mind about what she would like to be for Halloween, I’d like to celebrate this year’s holiday with minimal tears in the costume department. Tackle the aisles of Target and Walmart this month like a pro with these 5 simple tips.

1.

Wait until the last minute. Yep. Seriously. You might think this is a bad idea but unless your child is 100% sure she knows what she wants to be for Halloween, just wait it out. We’ve all had those years, okay maybe two, when our child goes through a Princess Sophia or Sheriff Callie stage. When that season of character obsession comes along, by all means…get the costume. But your child will some day move on to like a variety of characters and mythical creatures (unicorns anyone?) and every time I have been to the store right before Halloween, there has always been a costume my child will wear. I repeat, there has always been a costume my child will wear. It may not be the exact costume she wanted but since she couldn’t make up her mind to begin with, she’s easily swayed into being the best Princess Leia around town.

2.

Wear costumes that you already have at home. Who doesn’t love a fun game of dress-up? I know my kids do and we’ve had some of our best memories chasing each other throughout the house with me in a Ninja costume and my three kids piecing various bits of random costumes together. One time I saw Ellie come downstairs with a Spider-Man mask on her face, a cat costume on her body and she was riding a stick pony. I know you can relate. Kids always want to wear their Halloween costumes

6

Our Kids Magazine | October 2018

before Halloween is actually here. To avoid telling my kids no to avoid spaghetti sauce stains on their new costumes, I let them wear the previous years’ costumes whenever they want. Because let’s be real, we all know the month leading up to Halloween our kids become all “incognito” and dressing up is THE most important thing. Who am I to squash their playful imaginations? I’ve actually coined myself the best-mom-ever (courtesy of my kids) for keeping every single costume we’ve ever bought so they can indulge in as much dressing up as their hearts desire at no additional cost to me.

3.

Borrow your friends’ costumes. You know those character obsessions I talked about earlier? If your son wants to be the Hulk this year, seek out the friend whose son has already gone through his Hulk season in life and ask her if you can borrow his costume. She might say no if her son is planning on being the Hulk again this year or if he’s super territorial about his costume. Chances are, she’ll think the idea of trading costumes is brilliant. Return the favor by offering up one your son’s costumes and if you don’t have anything fun between the two of you, bring another friend into the mix.

4.

Head to the resale stores. These stores are your best friends and if you don’t know that by now, don’t worry, there’s still room for you. These are the stores you want to go to if your child changes her mind every day about what she wants to wear. You can buy three costumes, maybe even four, for the price of one brand-new costume which means Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

it’s okay if your daughter changes her mind the day of Halloween because you’ll have several back-ups. agazine M You might even find what she’s looking for with the tags still on. It’s happened before. My favorite thing about these stores is that you’ll often find costumes that weren’t even on your radar. Resale stores always have a great selection of current characters but they also have ones that you might Magazine not have thought of but that your daughter loves.

One year I took my middle daughter to look around and she found a witch costume that I recognized from a very expensive children’s catalogue. She absolutely loved it because it was so different than the traditionalMagazine witch costumes with its glittery, lime green and hot pink adornments. We grabbed it off the rack for $8 and it was in perfect condition. I happened to have the catalogue still at home so I looked up the original price. It was over $100 brand new and you know what? This is still one of her favorite costumes today and I get so giddy every time I see how happy she is wearing it because it was so inexpensive.

5.

Shop after Halloween for next year’s costumes. If you don’t know this tip by now, you need to get on the bandwagon. The day after Halloween, costumes will go on sale but not low enough that you want to start buying them. You’ll need to wait three to five days before costumes get down to 70-90%. Most of them will be picked over by then but they’ll be so cheap, you can piece different costumes together or keep them for you kids’ dress-up bin.

I like to divide and conquer so I park myself in one store and my friend will go to another. That way we can hit up more than one store at the same time. We’ll call each other if we see something one of our kids might like and then we’ll reconvene over coffee and get all excited about how much money we saved. You’d be surprised how many times the same costume comes out the very next year or a similar costume comes out with only one or two minor changes from the original. You can often times get these super cheap after Halloween and just tuck them away at home for the following year. Plan on spending some time digging through the racks though. Sometimes costumes are folded, dropped or tucked behind random items in the store from people who were going through them just like you are now. Their idea of the store not having a good selection just might be your jackpot for finding the perfect costume. Parenting journalist Meagan Ruffing gets so excited about going on a hunt for Halloween costumes every year. She loves finding good deals and gets just as excited as her kids do when she finds the perfect costumes for them. EDUCATION GUIDE

Keep It Up! 10 Ways For Students To Maintain Positivity All School Year

By Christina Katz

Ah, the first few weeks of school. Backpacks are bursting with new books. Lunch boxes are filled with nutritionally sound lunches and healthy snacks. Moods are upbeat and bouncy. Kids head off to the bus or the car with a bit of optimism in their step. Everything is new! Subjects are fresh challenges, teachers are as-of-yet unknown, and the year is filled with the promise of positive potential. A few weeks into the school year, though, kids hit their first fatigue hurdle. Challenges crop up. Everything starts to feel a lot less new and shiny. Teachers are giving a lot of homework. Math is harder. Social circles may be in flux. Friends can all be together in other classes. Auditions and tryouts have come and gone with unexpected results. What happened to all of the optimism everyone had during the first week of school? More importantly, how can you help your child navigate 10

Our Kids Magazine | October 2018

the ups and downs that come as the school year clicks into gear? Here are ten ways to help your child maintain positive momentum throughout the school year.

Attitude check.

The point of view you have towards school and teachers is going to be mirrored by your children. If you criticize and disrespect teachers and administrators at home, don’t be surprised if your child does the same at school. Are you friendly with teachers? Do you volunteer at the school? Show your child that teachers deserve respect, support and appreciation and that school is a safe and fun place to learn. Attend parent-teacher night, meet your child’s teachers, and make sure they know you are an education ally.

Notice moods.

Kids should be reasonably happy to get out of bed Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

EDUCATION GUIDE each morning and go to school. If your child does not have at least one or two activities to look forward each week, address this together. The beginning of the school year, the change in season or after the holiday break are good times to get involved in new activities. Having fun, interactive activities to look forward to can significantly improve a child’s mood. Getting enough sleep and eating three healthy meals plus snacks are also critical for maintaining a cheerful attitude and good health.

Imagine a happy future.

Many parents cannot seem to talk about the future without causing kids to feel anxious or overwhelmed. This is a surefire way to instill a sense of doom and gloom in kids about their options. Instead why not simply ask detached questions about the future and listen. We need to allow children an opportunity to inform us how they view the world long before it’s time to leave the nest. It may be tempting to correct their less practical inclinations, but don’t. Let them have their hopes and be a safe space where they can let them evolve.

OPEN HOUSE Come see why more families are choosing Brooks!

Ask about the day.

Don’t lose track of kids’ emotional states. Ask and listen without phones within reach. Don’t sacrifice a daily check-in for a too-hectic schedule. Before or after dinner can be a good time to chat, especially when there are after-school activities and plenty of homework. In fact, the more hectic the schedule, the more important it is to increase family down time. Try to have longer conversations about how school is going on the weekends, while you kick back and relax. Be sure to spend at least a half to a full day each week relaxing.

Review annual goals.

Help your student establish academic goals that serve their vision of the future at the beginning of the school year and re-visit them intermittently as the year progresses. If you sense they are getting off track or distracted, simply say, “What are your goals for the year again?” Briefly chatting about goals can reinvigorate kids to put energy into achieving them. If kids are not keen on their goals, make sure they set their goals and not yours.

Make school a good fit.

If your child is bored in school, maybe classes are not rigorous enough. On the flip side, if academics are too challenging, your student may constantly be struggling to keep up. Talk to the school counselor to see what options you have for making adjustments. Placement in the proper level classes is crucial for student happiness at school. Don’t let school become a breeze or a punishment.

Check grades regularly.

It’s wise to let students keep track of their own

progress in school as much as possible. But touch base with them about grades often enough to help troubleshoot any problems that might crop up. The frequency of chats can vary depending on age and maturity level. Choose the routine that best supports your child’s success. And then cut them some slack as they take on more responsibility. Encourage kids to talk to teachers at the first sign of an academic problem, instead of waiting for things to get worse. Asking for help from older adults is an important life skill, and self-advocacy is usually rewarded.

Oct 2018

Keep social commitments in balance. We all know kids who keep their social calendars booked, rarely taking any down time. Try to remember that self-care is taught rather than innate, and don’t allow your child’s hyper-social friends to make them feel like they are constantly missing out. Be especially mindful if your child has friends who don’t have enough parental guidance. For some kids, having a few close friends and hanging out one-on-one may be better than being part of an extended group that thrives on social drama. Make sure your child knows what “me time” means from a young age onward by setting a good example and helping prioritize self-care. Be alert for bullying. Sometimes aggression between children is so subtle that parents don’t pick up on it. Furthermore kids who are being bullied may not realize it, or if they do, they may be ashamed to confide in parents or other adults. When your kids are younger, volunteer at school once in a while and check out the social dynamics. Even children who have known each other for years can suddenly turn on each other, especially if they sense popularity is at stake. With tweens and teens make sure to regulate screen time, social media use and check devices regularly. Make sure you train kids in empathy and assertiveness and reinforce those lessons, especially during the tween and teen years. Watch for red flags. If your child has an appropriate schedule but is still showing signs of being disengaged or not wanting to get out of bed in the morning, get some help. As parents, we may not have all of the resources our children need at our fingertips, and there is no shame in this. If your child is suffering from depression or anxiety, talk to a health care professional. Your general practitioner or family physician can ask the right questions and discuss treatment options to get your child back on track. Childhood anxiety and depression are on the rise, especially during the ages when kids leave home to attend college. Make sure your child is ready for that transition by instilling a positive attitude and encouraging slow and steady momentum that will pay off during the first twelve years of school and beyond. Journalist Christina Katz has given her fair share of pep talks and lent plenty of shoulders to cry on. Parenting has taught her that life is Wabi-Sabi and isn’t likely to become perfect any time soon. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

EDUCATION GUIDE

Do Naps Make Kids Smarter? By Sandi Schwartz

When my children were infants and toddlers, nap time was a sacred part of the day – mainly because it gave me a much-needed break. I scheduled meals, playdates, mommy and me classes, and errands around their naps. I dealt with plenty of pushback from friends and relatives for sticking to this schedule. They didn’t understand why I had to leave early or arrive late to some events. Deep down I knew that it was best for my children – they needed that nap or they’d be cranky, which would ultimately lead to chaos later in the day. But another secret to my napping obsession was that I had read how naps can actually make kids smarter. What parent doesn’t want to do everything possible to help their kid get ahead in life, right?

The Science Of Napping

The study that caught my attention was released in 2010 by University of Arizona. It found that babies who nap are more likely to show an advanced level of learning known as “abstraction.” This is the ability to identify a pattern in information. Naps actually help the brain retain new information more effectively, allowing infants to learn more about their surroundings. During this study,

researchers played the same phrase from a made-up language to 48 15-month-olds over and over again until they were familiar with it. Testing showed that toddlers who slept within four to eight hours of hearing the phrase displayed more abstract learning. This was not the case for children who did not take a nap within the same time frame. Why does this happen? Infants have mostly REM sleep, which involves intense dreaming as a result of heightened brain activity. Children need to experience REM sleep within a reasonable amount of time after learning new information in order to process it. If they don’t sleep within four to eight hours, they will not be able to retain as much information. Over the last several years, additional studies have continued to link napping with better memory and other learning skills. In 2012, scientists at the University of Colorado Boulder investigated the effects of naps on cognitive responses in two- and three-year-olds. They found that children who did not nap consistently did not learn and solve problems as well as those who napped.

EDUCATION GUIDE Next, the University of Massachusetts Amherst released findings in 2013 that showed how a midday nap plays a crucial role in improving memory and learning in preschoolers. This boost was not found after a night of sleep if kids did not have a daytime nap. The researchers studied more than 40 preschoolers at six different schools. They conducted two different experiments: the first one focused on a memory game and the second one involved observing brain activity of children during nap time. In the first experiment, children played a memory matching game using various pictures very similar to the Memory board game we play with our kids. Every child learned the game at the same time in the morning. Researchers then split the children into two groups. One group took naps lasting an average of 75 minutes and the other group stayed awake. Then the children were asked to play the memory game again. They found that daytime naps were associated with significantly greater memory recall. Skipping the nap led to a 10 percent decrease in the children’s accuracy in the memory game. Also, the children who performed best on the memory game had consistent daytime naps. Scientists believe that memories are processed during sleep in a way that makes it easier for the brain to access and retrieve information later. In order to make room for new memories, the brain continues to work while we sleep, processing what we learn into long-term storage to free up space for new information. To confirm the findings from the first experiment, researchers then observed brain activity of a different group of preschool children while they napped. They found an increase in the density of sleep spindles, which are bursts of electrical activity in the brain believed to play a role in long-term memory. Researchers determined that an increase in sleep spindle density of kids who napped was linked to better memory skills. Finally, in 2015 researchers from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom reported a link between infant napping and memory skills. After studying over 200 young children, they concluded that daytime naps of 30 minutes or more help infants retain and remember new behaviors. They tested whether daytime sleep after learning helped babies remember new skills more effectively. The study focused on 216 healthy six- to 12-month-old infants. The children were shown how to remove and manipulate a 14

Our Kids Magazine | October 2018

mitten from a hand puppet and were given the opportunity to demonstrate these actions after four and 24 hours. Half of the babies slept within four hours of learning, while the rest either had no sleep or napped for fewer than 30 minutes. Only the infants who napped after the learning activity remembered what they learned, while those who did not nap showed no evidence of remembering the new behavior. In a nutshell, they found that those who sleep after learning are able to grasp the information better. Therefore, the researchers suggest that the best time to learn may be just before kids go to sleep.

What Parents Can Do Now that we know from several studies that naps enhance our children’s ability to learn and retain information, what changes can we make in how we parent? ■■Train your kids to nap from the very beginning. In order to

get your children used to napping, set a routine for them from a very young age.

■■Make naps a priority. Don’t succumb to peer pressure

when friends and family give you a hard time about your children’s naps. Build naps into your family’s schedule and gently explain to people the importance of your children taking that break during the day to recharge their batteries.

■■Choose daycares and preschools that include nap time.

In order for young children to function and learn at the optimal level, they really need a nap even while at school. Many schools are eliminating naps to make room for more curriculum. If your school doesn’t include a time for napping, consider sharing the science with them about the educational benefits of naps.

■■Read before nap time. The research shows that children

grasp material better just before they fall asleep, so try to make a habit of reading to them before nap time as long as they aren’t too cranky.

Stomp Out Bullying Signs to Watch for and How Stop It Dead in Its Tracks By Kimberly Blaker

Twelve-year-old Mallory Grossman of Rockaway Township, New Jersey, was a quiet girl, but popular among her close circle of friends. She was a good student and an athlete. She was also the victim of malicious bullying by a group of girls who tormented her at school and via texting and social media. The bully girls even chided in a text, “Why don’t you kill yourself?” Tragically, on June 14, 2017, that’s exactly what happened. Mallory ended her torment by taking her own life. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately one in five kids ages 12 to 18 has experienced being bullied in a given year. Such bullying ranges from name-calling and spreading rumors to the destruction of property, threats, and violence. Studies have found bullying has health and psychological repercussions – and the effects can last into adulthood. The victims of childhood bullying, as well as bully-victims (those who are both bullied and bully others), according to a 2013 report in Psychological Science journal, are “at increased risk of poor health, wealth, and social-relationship outcomes in adulthood.” Pure bullies (those who bully but are not victims), weren’t found to be at increased risk.

Bullying versus conflict For parents and educators to effectively address bullying, we must first understand what constitutes bullying. When we see it, we often don’t recognize it because from the outside it looks like conflict. In fact, it often is nothing more than conflict. In the heat of the moment, kids, like adults, can say and do mean things to each other. That in and of itself doesn’t constitute bullying. Because parents and teachers are aware of this, it’s sometimes easy to dismiss a child’s complaints about being harassed as nothing more than a spat. So here are some questions to help determine which it is. 18

Our Kids Magazine | October 2018

Do both children have equal power? If so, it’s conflict. In bullying, the bully has more power or more perceived power. Are both children able to express their concerns or views? Or is one child passive or unable to express her side for some reason? Does the behavior stop when the antagonizing child recognizes he’s hurting another? Or does the aggressor continue while being fully aware of the effects of his behavior?

What is bullying? Bullying is repeated acts by an individual or a group with the intent to scare, distress, or cause harm to another. It differs from simply disliking or rejecting another, experiencing mutual conflict, or a single-episode mean-spirited act.

Bullying behaviors include any of the following: ■■Hostile or discriminatory behavior based on race, religion,

gender, or sexual orientation

■■Cyberbullying, which is the use of social media, websites,

instant messaging, or texting via smartphones or computers to harass or harm another ■■Causing physical harm by hitting, kicking, shoving or destroying property ■■Social bullying such as spreading malicious rumors, damaging someone’s reputation, encouraging others to gang up on someone, or playing mean or embarrassing jokes ■■Verbal bullying, which includes name-calling, intimidating, or insulting another

Kids keep it a secret Often, children don’t tell when they’re being bullied. As a result, the bullying persists for months or longer and Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

becomes increasingly more damaging. There are multiple reasons kids might not tell an adult. Perhaps a child has been threatened with repercussions if they tell, or the child fears the threat will become greater if they tell. They don’t want to be a tattletale, something kids have been taught not to do and don’t always understand the difference in tattling for unimportant matters versus more serious issues. Children often feel ashamed or embarrassed either about being a victim of bullying or about the reason they’re being bullied. This is often the case when the bully has used name-calling or character attacks. They feel they either won’t be believed or that adults won’t do anything about it.

Signs of bullying

There are several signs to be aware of that might indicate your child is being bullied. Frequently tries to get out of going to school or declining grades ■■Complaints of stomach aches and headaches ■■Feeling sad or upset ■■Social withdrawal

■■Difficulty sleeping

■■Asking whether something derogatory someone said

about your child is true or other signs of decreased self-esteem ■■Unexplained bruises or abrasions ■■Clothing, electronics or other belongings missing or damaged ■■Seeming anxious or sad after being on social media ■■Changes in eating habits whether lack of appetite, binge eating, or not eating lunch at school ■■Self-harming or talk of suicide ■■Signs that might indicate your child is a bully include: ■■Hanging out with other kids who are aggressive or bully others ■■Not taking responsibility for their own actions ■■Excludes certain kids from activities ■■Frequently getting into trouble at school ■■Expresses intolerance toward kids who are different ■■Makes fun of other kids ■■Brings home items such as electronics, clothes, or money ■■Hurts animals ■■Has experienced or witnessed domestic violence ■■Is overly concerned about being popular

How to prevent or put a stop to bullying First and foremost, talk to your kids about bullying so they understand what it is and that it’s unacceptable. Make sure your kids understand it’s imperative they tell an adult if they or someone they know is being bullied. Rather than waiting for it to occur multiple times, your child should tell

a teacher or parent immediately so the bully doesn’t have the opportunity to gain power. Also look into your child’s school policies on bullying, and find out what kind of preventive measures the school takes and how it handles bullying when it occurs. If the school doesn’t have a bullying prevention program, ask it to develop and implement one. Monitor your kids’ activity online including their social media. There are many reasons to do this for your child’s safety. To ensure your child is neither being bullied or acting as a bully is one more big reason. Model the kind of behavior you expect from your kids. When kids overhear their parents talking negatively about people because of their weight or joking about someone who’s different, kids tend to model this behavior and are more likely to take it to an extreme. Take time every day to talk with your child and ask how their day was. Kids who bully are often not getting the attention they need at home. Children who are being bullied may feel they deserve the treatment or that their parents wouldn’t care or wouldn’t act on it. Teach your kids to stand up for themselves. If your child remains passive, a bully will up the ante and gradually become more abusive. But if your child assertively and unemotionally stands up to the bully, the bully will realize he won’t get away with the behavior. On the other hand, if a bully knows he’s getting under your child’s skin, the bully will persist. Your child should maintain eye contact, stay calm, maintain appropriate distance, and use the bully’s name while addressing the bully. Here are some examples of what your child can say: ■■You’re being a bully, Kyle. Knock it off. ■■Okay. Whatever, Sara. ■■I’m sure you think you’re really funny, Joey, but really,

you’re not.

■■Amanda, do you really think I care? ■■Nice try, Christa.

Notice all of these are simple, direct unemotional responses that let the bully know he isn’t getting under your child’s skin. Your child should practice one or two of these or come up with his or her own ideas that feel comfortable. The idea is to not say anything that gives the bully power such as a compliment or that indicates it bothers your child. If your child is being bullied, also talk to your child’s teachers, school administrators, bus driver, and others who can help put a stop to the abusive behavior. Make certain your school has a plan in place to protect your child, and if it isn’t doing enough, contact the district superintendent. If your child has been threatened, contact the police immediately. Finally, if the bullying doesn’t cease, proceed by filing charges through your school board and local police department.

Book Review

PLANET PARTY

San Antonio's Largest Private Indoor Party Venue!

Remember that rhyme, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me”?. As adults, we know that just isn’t true; in fact, social awareness of bullies has rightfully increased in recent years. October is National Bully Awareness Month. Why not use some of the many outstanding children’s books that now exist to open some important conversations with your child about acceptance and tolerance? Here are just a few. Bully, by Laura Vaccaro Seeger. Roaring Brook Press, 2013. In this simple barnyard tale, Bully the bull is cruelly rejected by a bigger bull, and then responds angrily to invitations to play from other farm animals. His fierce insults are easier to deal with thanks to the funny wordplay (“Chicken!” he yells at a hen), but little ones can easily interpret the animals’ expressions and Bully’s intent. This story seems simple on the surface, but the lesson is clear. Here Comes The Big, Mean Dust Bunny, by Jan Thomas. Beach Lane Books, 2009. Four dustball friends - Ed, Ned, Ted, and Bob - return from their first book (Rhyming Dust Bunnies) to encounter a fierce ball of fuzz whose main goal is to terrorize them. The friends invite him to join in their game of rhyming words, but the bully won’t play nice - when asked for a word that rhymes with “fit,” he volunteers “SIT!” as he flattens them! It’s a story about a serious topic that’s told with humor perfect for young children.

All Are Welcome, by Alexandra Penfold. Alfred A. Knopf, 2018. Rather than directly address the topic of bullying, this beautiful new book gets the point across by emphasizing the opposite approach - inclusion. Readers follow a group of multicultural, diverse children through their day at a school where the kids sing, play, and learn together, oblivious to the differences in their skin tone, dress, and cultures. The illustrations open the door for children to ask innocent questions safely, but also show how people can happily co-exist despite their differences. An important must-read for families! ONGOING EXHIBITS

Dia de los Muerto at the The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures runs through January 4, 2019.

The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures Dia de los Muertos: The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures is hosting a unique student exhibit for Dia de los Muertos. A major piece of the exhibit includes an Ofrenda, prepared by a UTSA Honors College class as a class project. Lecturer Alegra Lozano teaches HON3503: Dia de los Muertos to a class of 16 UTSA Honors College students, in a variety of majors. The students will prepare an altar, or “Ofrenda,” with traditional, modern, and interactive elements to honor the cultural tradition of Dia de los Muertos. The event is open to all to view, learn, and participate. Dia de los Muertos is celebrated Oct. 31 – Nov. 2. The holiday tradition coincides with the Christian and Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2), and elements of all are represented as part of this holiday’s rich cultural traditions. Exhibit runs through January 4, 2019. Regular hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday; noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. $10 for adults (18-64); $8 for seniors (65+) and children (6-17); free with membership, UTSA or Alamo Colleges identification.
