Hey, It’s fall y’all! Fall welcomes us with cooler weather, holiday shopping and delicious Thanksgiving meals. Thanksgiving, in particular, is a time of gratitude and one thing we parents tend to focus on during this season is instilling some lessons of gratitude in our children. But, that doesn’t mean we couldn’t use an extra dose of gratitude ourselves. In this month’s issue of Our Kids Magazine, freelance writer Christina Katz gives 19 techniques that help us all set an appreciative tone in her article “Gratitude for Grownups.” And, if you want to make Thanksgiving truly special, get everyone involved! For a quick seasonal decorative tip or just fun autumn activities to do with the kids, read Meagan Ruffing’s “Thanksgiving Crafts for Your Kids.” Yoga is becoming more popular every day, not just for adults, but for children with special needs as well. This month, freelance writer and certified yoga instructor Judy M. Miller explains how yoga can help address the additional physical and emotional symptoms prevalent in kids with special needs. If you have a child with special needs, or know someone who does, please read and share Miller’s article “Five Yoga Benefits for Kids with Special Needs.” With Christmas just around the corner, this month’s issue also includes our Holiday Gift Guide featuring toys, games, books and more to get you started this holiday season. And while you are shopping for the family and friends, don’t forget that special teacher! Not sure what to get them and need some great gift ideas? Ashley Talmadge’s article “Thanking Your Child’s Teacher” has some great suggestions that will surely be appreciated when the wrapping comes off. Fall Days Are Fun Days! Celebration is in the air! So much to do! Día De Los Muertos at Pearl, PJ Masks Live, Solar Fest, The Annual Muertitos Fest Family Day and Let it Snow at Alamo Quarry Market are just a few events to look for in our calendar this month. Happy Reading!

Gratitude For Grownups: 19 Techniques That Help You Set An Appreciative Tone For The Whole Family By Christina Katz

Gratitude fills us up. A little inner appreciation helps us stop grasping at things outside of ourselves for sustenance and satisfaction. A thankful attitude strengthens relationships, reduces stress, improves health, and helps us feel happier in every moment of any day. But maybe your family has fallen out of the positive habit of noticing what they appreciate. Gratitude isn’t automatic, after all. But it is a habit you can practice in a few simple steps. Follow these five steps to get back in the gratitude groove.

needs and expressing those needs is encouraged and expected. No family member should feel like they can’t ask for what they legitimately need. If negative communication patterns persist, try interrupting them with the question, “What do you need right now?” You might be surprised to discover that meeting basic needs helps everyone shift into a more positive attitude. And don’t be afraid to ask yourself, “What do I need?” Once every family member is getting needs met, or at least getting needs on a schedule to be met, gratitude flows in.

STEP ONE: Put the kibosh on complaining, criticizing, or gossiping for a specified amount of time like one week or even a whole month. Discuss the definitions of each of these three words with your family. Then playfully bust each other when one of you breaks a rule. You will, and that’s okay. Build awareness of negative habits rather than shaming, and then redirect attention in a more positive direction.

STEP THREE: Recognize what you feel grateful for throughout the day. This can become a new habit if you are usually so busy you are just trying to keep up with everyone’s busy schedules. Try to pause several times a day when you feel happy and discover the source, so you can model the habit for the rest of your family.

STEP TWO: Be sure to explain that having legitimate 8

Or do both. Gratitude becomes more positive when appreciated by you and others.

STEP FIVE: After you recognize and acknowledge something to feel grateful for, sit with it for at least a count of ten. Make your gratitude process at least as long as several deep breaths. This way you make something positive a little bigger and start to reap the benefits of your gratitude practice immediately. . Discuss lessons learned in the past. Everyone goes through challenges in life. Don’t try to forget yours. Turn them into a list of character-building stories about your life. . Appreciate something with another person. Remarking, “It’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?” helps you both focus on the positive and forget distracting thoughts.

11

. Don’t keep good news to yourself. Notice good service and offer feedback about it before you forget. If you can’t get your hands on a comment card, ask to speak to a manager and report good employees.

12

. At a weekend meal, ask everyone to share best moments of the week. You can do this around the dinner table or at tuck-in time. Even once a week is better than never. If kids are feeling down, ask for a positive and a negative to balance out all the feelings.

13

. Thank someone daily for something no matter how small. If you want your kids to be more grateful, thank them for things you appreciate. Gratitude begets gratitude.

14

. Appreciate nature and the earth. Where would you be without them? Stop to smell a beautiful flower or pick up a pretty stone to take home and put on your dresser or on a bookshelf.

. In moments that are hard, appreciate the opportunity to grow in character, even if you don’t like what is happening. Sometimes in life, we have to take our medicine. . Always try to be as present as possible when interacting with others, whether strangers or family members. Put your phone down or stop what you are doing. Be attentive, not distracted.

17

. Find a cause that is important to you and contribute time, money or energy. Remember that there is no perfect way to do this. Whatever you can do, let it be enough. Then be sure to share the experience with your kids.

18

. Accept a compliment from someone else, whenever one is offered. Stop, smile, and say thank you. Practice self-kindness with yourself so you can offer kindness to others.

19

. Use the calendar on your phone to alert you to pause for a moment and find something to feel grateful about. Add it to your gratitude list or just relax for a minute and savor the moment. Author, journalist and writing coach Christina Katz flexes her happy muscles daily by stopping and appreciating the little things as well as the people around her.

Thanksgiving Crafts for Your Kids By Meagan Ruffing

Fall is the perfect time to get your kids outside to collect acorns, pine cones and sticks for their indoor crafts. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, any of these five simple projects can be proudly displayed on your kitchen table. Plus, your kids will delight in knowing they contributed to the festivities and it will be a great conversation piece for family members. An acorn frame is one of the easiest, most fun fall crafts to do. Give your child an empty yogurt container to collect her acorns in the next time you are outside on a walk. Grab an old frame at a secondhand store and hot glue the acorns on all around the frame (an adult should do this part). Spray with shellac once you have the acorns glued on. Voila! You have a really cool frame that you can talk about for years. This would also make a great gift for grandparents with a picture of them and their grand kids. An “I am thankful” tree is such a great conversation piece; literally. Have your kids grab a bunch of long, skinny twigs from outside. Place them in a vase and tie little pieces of paper with things that your kids are thankful for. Before dinner, have each person take a piece of paper off the ‘tree’ and read aloud what they are thankful for. This is a great way to teach your children the importance of being thankful. Pine cones make such pretty centerpieces. Grab 12

Our Kids Magazine | November 2017

some spray glue and glitter and let your kids roll their pine cones on a paper plate to decorate. Spray a coat of shellac at the end so the glitter stays on the pine cone and not all over your house. Display in a bowl or on the fireplace mantel. Hand prints are the most nostalgic way to preserve your child’s itty bitty years. Take that precious little hand and trace around it on a piece of paper. This is fun for an older sibling to do with their younger siblings. Turn the hand print into a turkey by drawing a face on the thumb, feathers on the next three fingers and finally, a tale on the pinky. Gobble gobble! Lastly, make a headpiece for your child to wear at dinner. Grab some construction paper, tape, scissors and feathers. Cut the paper into strips; taping them together to make it long enough to go around your child’s head. It should fit snugly. Decorate the crown with feathers and place on top of his head – making him feel like the prince that he is. These are just a few quick crafts for you to do with your children. The possibilities are endless when it comes to craft time with your kids. Go on, get outside and start collecting those acorns! Special Needs

By Judy M. Miller

Five Yoga Benefits for Kids with Special Needs

As a certified yoga instructor, I have long been aware of yoga’s ability to benefit a person’s mind and body. However, it was not until my daughter, who has special needs, trained to receive her certification and became one of the first teen yoga instructors in the U.S., that I truly understood the depth of yogic benefits. Yoga is a full-circle practice of breathing (pranayama, also known as prana), movement (mudra), and sound (mantra). The asanas (poses), vinyasa (sequence of asana), and accompanying breathing serve to address the physical and emotional aspects in the practicing individual. Kids with special needs have additional physical and emotional symptoms to address, such as motor development, sensory integration, and confidence. Yoga is a practice on the mat. I encourage students to meet themselves on their mats, explaining that some meetings will be better than others. I have led classes where one or more of my students has sat and practiced breathing the entire duration or stayed in a restorative asana, such as balasana (child’s pose). That is where the child is at that time, and that’s fine. Modifications are to be expected and embraced. The top five 14

Our Kids Magazine | November 2017

ways kids with special needs can benefit from yoga practice are discussed below.

Benefit One: Awareness of Prana (Breath) and Self Prana is the vital life force that animates and regulates all of our systems. When kids become aware of their breath, they can then begin to understand how breathing impacts their body, noticeably the respiratory, cardiovascular, muscular, and nervous systems. Prana is a great coping technique for kids with special needs. Kids can be taught how to manage their breathing, moving it through their bodies in such a way to self-calm and balance emotions, invigorate their body and movement, or cleanse the mind-body complex. They discover that breathing is a tool and something they can control. Benefit Two: Development of Motor Skills and Coordination Yoga tones muscles, improves stability and balance. Along with these benefits comes body awareness and enhanced coordination. Standing asanas, such as Tadasana (Mountain) and LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

Benefit Four: Sensory Integration Many kids with special needs also suffer from overactive nervous systems. This is particularly the case of kids with autism and kids who have been diagnosed with sensory processing disorder. Yoga is a gentle environment --- dim lights, soft music, smooth mats, and the quiet instruction of the teacher. The comforting, low-stimulation environment is calming and allows for nervous energy to be released in a controlled way during the asana practice. Yoga encompasses movement, breath work, visualization, storytelling, and music. This combination activates the emotional part of the brain, encouraging the kids’ to be aware of what their senses tell them and focus in class.

Benefit Five: Yoga Helps You--the Parent You can connect with and support your child with special needs through your own consistent yoga practice. You will find that you, too, receive numerous benefits from yoga practice, particularly the awareness of your sensory system in relation to stress and how to use breathing as a coping mechanism. Check out your local yoga studios to see who offers classes for kids with special needs or ask your child therapist(s). Yoga can take place anywhere. All that is needed is a mat and uninterrupted time. Judy M. Miller is a RYT200 Yoga Instructor and Certified Gottman Educator, with a particular affinity for working with kids. Thanking Your Child’s Teacher: A-List Gifts for the Holiday Season By Ashley Talmadge

You’d like to give your child’s classroom teacher a special gift before the winter break. But what do teachers really want? Yes, most will graciously accept yet another “World’s Greatest Teacher” mug or a mini school bus ornament. But unless the teacher is collecting such items for a career-long assemblage project, they are best left on the store shelves. The following are some Can’t-Go-Wrong teacher gift ideas. (And be sure to check school policies—many districts limit the value and type of gifts received by their employees.) Personal notes. A hand-written note, along with a card made by your child is one of the best-loved teacher gifts. Teachers light up as they read “words of wisdom” imparted by students. These are keepsakes, cherished and saved for years to come. If you write a letter to your child’s teacher, be specific about what she’s doing well. Instead of, “You’re a great teacher!” try “I love how you nurture Lucy’s excitement for science with lots of hands-on activities. She always looks forward to writing status notes in the ‘Guinea Pig Log’ when it’s her turn to care for them.” Consider making a copy of your letter for the principal to put in the teacher’s file. Creative lists. If your child is young or does not enjoy writing, there are many clever ways to list what he loves about being in his teacher’s class. For instance, cut some 16 Our Kids Magazine | November 2017

construction paper into bookmark-ready strips. Attach a word or phrase to each one that describes a favorite classroom experience or teacher trait. Laminated and stuff an envelope with several bookmarks, along with a small (walletsized) signed photo of your child. Donations. Consider funding a specific need or classroom. Many teachers are signed up with funding groups such as Donors Choose (www.donorschoose.org) or Adopt a Classroom (www.adoptaclassroom.org). Gifts are easily made online. Also check with the PTA to see if there’s a wish list for your child’s classroom. Gift cards. Though parents often think it seems “impersonal” or even “lazy,” the truth is teachers love gift cards. They can choose what they want to buy and when. It’s a sad fact that a teacher may easily spend more than $500 of her own money each year purchasing classroom materials. Gift cards to stores like Target, Staples, and Barnes & Noble are universally appreciated. Unless you know the teacher’s diet and habits well, take care in giving gift cards for food and personal services. Most teachers would welcome a Starbuck’s card, but some might not be as enthused about trying the new hotspot in raw foods cuisine. Similarly, make sure LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

any spa services are flexible—she may look forward to a pedicure with trepidation rather than tranquility. Food gifts. While teachers often enjoy edible gifts, food items should be non-perishable and healthy. Energy bars, nuts, and dried fruit are at a premium, because they can be stored and used for quick snacks. A teacher often receives so many homemade cookies and coffee cakes that much is given away (or ends up in the garbage). And many don’t want to sabotage a diet with an influx of caramel candy. Class gifts. Although it takes a bit more planning, there are many benefits to presenting a gift from the whole group. It can show off the class’s personality, reduce the financial expenditure for individual families, and avoid any pretenses of favoritism. If the group decides to go in on a gift card or donation, the teacher can be presented with a larger gift. (At only $5 a head, a class of 25 could make a $125 donation, without violating most district policies.) When coordinating such efforts, it’s important that the gift be presented from all students, whether or not they contributed financially, and all students should have a chance to sign the card. Still stumped? Check with one of her teacher friends. Another teacher often has great ideas and personal insight as to the perfect gift, whether it be a favorite tea or a small necessity for the classroom.

The “You Really Shouldn’t Have!” List

Consider the number of students a teacher has each year, think of her space limitations, and just say no to: ■■Mugs and ornaments. Even if only three students

give her a “Greatest Teacher” mug each year, she’ll soon have enough drinking vessels for her own thrift store shelf.

■■Scented lotions and candles. Not only is fragrance a

very personal preference, but these items proliferate just as quickly as the mugs.

■■Over-sized or framed pictures. Including a small

school photo of your child with a personal note is appreciated. Anything larger is an encumbrance.

■■Candy and homemade food. Some teachers do

enjoy getting a plate of their favorite cookies, but don’t risk it unless you know the teacher well. Food piles up fast. In addition, the teacher might be leaving town for winter break, or she might be avoiding sweets for health reasons.
