The Surprising Reasons Moms (and Dads) Feel Guilty

By Pam Moore

At work we feel bad we’re not with our kids. While working out, we have a nagging feeling we should be home for bedtime. Out with friends, we feel guilty for having a good time while our partners and kids fend for themselves. For most women, motherhood comes with a healthy serving of guilt. Says Michelle Kalinksi, a Colorado mom who stays at home with her two children and runs a business part-time: “When I’m working I feel guilty that I’m not with the kids and when I’m with the kids I feel guilty that I’m not working, and in both cases I am often called upon to deal with issues related to the other. So I may be working and have to deal with a kid-related issue and vice-versa. It makes me feel like I’m not giving 100 percent to anyone or anything.” The pressure to lean in, both at work and at home, isn’t just in our heads. Emma Bennett, a Santa Monica therapist specializing in maternal mental health, says “There is a societal expectation for us as mothers to do it all. When we don’t, feelings of guilt, shame or inadequacy can arise.”

Guilt by the numbers

Dad guilt, on the other hand, is an emerging phenomenon we are only beginning to recognize. According to a recent survey by Today.com and Fatherly.com, nearly a fifth of men surveyed reported feeling guilty about not being present enough with their kids, while 17 percent reported they felt bad about how much they worked. A whopping 63 percent of working fathers said they were envious of stay-at-home dads. That dads increasingly grapple with the guilt that has long besieged moms is not surprising, given the changing face of the workforce. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 70 percent of mothers with children under age 18 were in the workforce in 2015, compared to 47 percent in 1975. That upward trend has been even steeper for mothers of young children. Between 1975 and 2015, the rate of labor force participation by mothers with children under age three increased by 27

percent. Not only are mothers increasingly present in the workforce, but their families are increasingly dependent on their financial contributions. In 2015 mothers were the primary or sole wage earners for 40 percent of households with children under 18, compared with 11 percent in 1960. Jacob Brier’s family is one example of this trend. His wife went back to work as an attorney shortly after their son was born. Jacob stayed home for the first year, gradually transitioning back to full-time work as a small business and marketing consultant around his son’s second birthday. Brier says guilt is a frequent part of his experience as a dad. “I had guilt when I went back to work, and still have guilt when I stay late,” he says. Though the fact that his son now spends much of his day in kindergarten has assuaged some of his guilt – he says he would feel guilty if he weren’t providing for his family financially – it’s still a struggle: “[I have] guilt that I’m not stricter about what he eats. Guilt that I’m too strict about nearly every single other thing. Guilt that I don’t plan enough play dates … Guilt that I haven’t been to a PTO meeting. Guilt that I forgot to trim his nails. Guilt that I sometimes get annoyed when he does super cute and sweet things because I really just need a break.” Michelle Gale, MA, parenting coach and author of “Mindful Parenting In A Messy World,” says the guilt Brier describes is to be expected: “It makes sense that a father who has participated fully in the raising of a baby would feel more guilt as a parent.”

Guilt feed In addition to changing gender roles, some see social media as a source of guilt for both moms and dads. “When your feed shows your friends’ perfect homes, their Pinterest-worthy birthday parties, and the healthy meals they serve their smiling kids, even though you know it’s just a snapshot of their lives, it’s hard not to compare yourself and feel guilty for not doing enough,” says Elizabeth Willey, a Massachusetts mom who works Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

part-time. Willey deleted her Facebook account and says she doesn’t miss it. While social media can be a source of stress for moms, according to Dr. Jenni Skyler – a sex and relationship therapist and mom of two – it may be a driver for men’s increasingly active approach to parenting. “Our dads’ generation would never have dreamed of feeling guilty for not spending time with their kids,” says Skyler. Now though, she feels social media exposes men to new ideas and perspectives that lead them to be more engaged, albeit more guilt-ridden, as dads.

Mom guilt for the win

While guilt is increasingly seeping into the experience of fatherhood, research shows that mothers still have the upper hand, especially when it comes to work. A 2017 study published in the journal ‘Sex Roles’ looked at heterosexual couples with kids and found that mothers had significantly higher levels of guilt than fathers when it came to concerns about work interfering with family. Drawing on qualitative research for this study, the authors cited the bind working moms are caught in when their kid gets sick on the same day as an important work presentation. A mother tends to experience guilt whether she stays home with her sick child, thereby shirking work responsibilities, or goes to work and lets another caregiver watch her child, pushing off her parental duties. The study authors argue that if put in the same position, a man

typically has less guilt relative to a woman if he chooses work, as this “is a central part of his parental, genderprescribed role as primary breadwinner.” Not only are women more susceptible to feeling guilty due to conflicts between work and family, but some experts argue that for many women, experiencing guilt is an inevitable part of being having two X chromosomes. “Women are more naturally relational, which means they are tracking others emotions and tend to feel much more interconnected,” says Gale. “The more interconnected we feel, the more others’ emotions can make us feel one way or the other.” Gale also says women’s tendency to function as “project managers” plays a role. Where families with a mom and a dad are concerned, “[Women] know intimately when something doesn’t go as planned or someone is not getting what they need. It’s much easier to feel guilty when you know all the painstaking details of the day.” Though men are catching up, if biology and culture are any indicators, it doesn’t look like they’ll ever beat women on the parental guilt front. Not that the guys shouldn’t try; for both moms and dads, guilt can arise from increased family engagement – and that engagement is a good thing. ADHD Behavior & Brain Research Study We are offering kids an opportunity to see pictures of their brain and participate in science. Many children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) also have problems staying calm when they get emotionally upset -- which can lead to aggressive behaviors like hitting, yelling, or damaging property. Sometimes this aggression gets better when children receive medications for ADHD, but some children continue to experience significant problems with aggression. To help us to better understand why children have these different responses to treatment, this study is looking at how medications affect the brain and the behaviors of children with ADHD and other emotional or behavioral concerns.

The Unicorn Party

A Magical Birthday Idea By Pam Molnar

Looking for a party idea where the kids can get their bling on, horse around with their friends and have a magical time? If your child loves unicorns, we have a party plan that will knock their horseshoes off.

Fill with your favorite ice cream or fruit flavored yogurt for a cool, sweet treat.

Get Crafty: What to serve: 1. Rainbow Grilled Cheese – Use white cheese like Swiss or mozzarella or combo of the two. Divide into four or five zippered bags and add 3-5 drops of food coloring. Seal and shake to spread color. Place cheese in rows of color or mixed up for a swirly look. Cook grilled cheese as normal. 2. Unicorn Nachos – Similar to walking tacos, use bags of Bugle corn chips and add cheese, ground beef, tomatoes, avocados or whichever nacho toppings you like best. 3. Rainbow Drinks - Add food coloring or candy sprinkles to ice cube tray and fill will water. When frozen, serve with light colored drinks like Sprite, lemonade or white grape juice. 4. Unicorn Ice Cream Cones – Add vanilla frosting to the outside of ice cream cones and roll in sprinkles. 8

Our Kids Magazine | June 2019

1. Unicorn Horse Shoes – You will find unfinished horseshoes on Oriental trading 12 for $5.19 or Amazon 48 for $12. Decorate with paint, hot glue, glue dots and the bling of your choice. Put wall hangers on the open end of the shoe so when you hang it, the luck doesn’t run out. 2. Unicorn Garden – Purchase a terra cotta saucer, fill with coffee grounds, fish tank rocks or sand. Add moss for grass, a mini wooden bird house and mini unicorn. Decorate with colored stones or jewels. You can also paint the bird house or saucer to give it personal touch. 3. Unicorn Hat – Choose a gold or silver party hat from the party store. Decorate with long ribbons, fabric, jewels, foam or felt. Add your unique Unicorn Name to the hat with a name generator like NameGeneratorFun. com. Connect With US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

PARTY DIRECTORY Play Some Games:

1. Unicorn Horn – Bling up five plastic traffic cones to look like unicorn horns. Place in a row and let players use bean bags to try to knock them over or toss the bean bag to land on the top of the horn. 2. Find the Unicorn – Similar to an Easter egg hunt, hide paper, stuffed or plastic unicorns around the party area. Place numbers on each unicorn to match with a prize. You can also use the pieces from a unicorn puzzle and see which team can gather and put the pieces together first. 3. Unicorn Rubber Duck Water Race – You can find unicorn themed rubber ducks at the party store. Move them down the race course by either squirting with water gun, blowing on them or sending them down a creek. Put numbers or names on them to see who winner is. 4. Hopper Ball Unicorn Race – Purchase two hopper balls and decorate to look like unicorn. Have the kids race from A to B. You can also use the traffic cones from the Unicorn Horn game and let the racers weave around them for an added challenge.

Five Ways to Help Keep Your Toddler Out of the ER By Christa Melnyk Hines

Toddlers are wonderfully curious and active little people. But that means they’re also prone to injury and illness. Here are five ways to help keep your youngster safe and out of the emergency department -and a few tips if you find yourself there anyway.

Prevent serious illness. Scary high fevers, vicious gastrointestinal bugs and unrelenting colds and coughs are among the many reasons parents decide to haul their kiddos into the emergency department. To the extent that you can, ensure your child is wellhydrated and fortified with a variety of nutritious, wholesome foods and avoid exposing them to sick kids. Also, teach them to use their upper arm or a tissue to catch their cough and cover their nose and mouth when they sneeze. Encourage proper hand-washing by sudsing up and rinsing while singing the ABCs together (or another song of your choice) to make it fun. The flu vaccine is one of the best preventatives during cold and flu season. Get the flu vaccine in October just before flu season begins, says Dr. Gabe Schifman, a pediatric emergency physician. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone over the age of six months receives the vaccine. During the 2017 to 2018 flu season, approximately 80 percent of the children who died from the flu did not receive a flu vaccine. “The flu shot is safe and does not cause the virus,” Schifman says. “You can have a low grade fever after a vaccination, but that is just because your body is eliciting a response to the virus, which is what you want. It’s starting to begin the fight to 12

develop antibodies to prevent you from getting the infection down the road.” Should you head to the ER if your child has a high fever? It depends. If your child is otherwise drinking fine and the fever comes down with Motrin or Tylenol, it may not warrant a midnight trip to the ER. “But, if it’s a 104 fever, they’re listless, difficult to wake up and they’re not drinking or eating, that is more concerning, and they should be seen,” Schifman says.

Jump, jump around?

Nope, probably better get down.According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), with the surging popularity of trampoline parks, pediatric injuries related to all of that bouncing around have soared in recent years. “Trampolines are my least favorite fun event,” Schifman says. “All trampolines are hazardous.” Injuries related to trampolines include sprains, broken bones and spinal cord injuries. The AAP discourages any child under the age of six from jumping on trampolines, even in supervised training programs.

Play it safe.

Toddlers most often get hurt by running and falling at the playground. Opt for playgrounds with age-appropriate equipment featuring impact absorbent surfaces like sand, pea gravel, wood chips, mulch and shredded rubber or those with synthetic turf. Avoid those with grass, asphalt, cement, dirt or gravel surfaces. Toddlerhood is an excellent time to teach kids to use safety FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

Keep out of reach. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, children between the ages of one and two account for more than half of the medicine-related calls made to poison centers. The most common types of medicines and products that children under the age of four get into include ibuprofen, multivitamins and diaper care and rash products. Keep medications and household poisons out of sight and out of reach. If your child does ingest a poisonous substance, before heading to the emergency department, call Poison Control, a free service, at (800) 222-1222. “They instruct parents on what to do for exposures. It’s an excellent resource for parents because it can save you a trip to the emergency department if it’s deemed nonemergent by poison control,” Schifman says.

Check your child’s high chair. Toddlers may be master climbers and escape artists, but they’re not so great at avoiding falls. Head injuries and broken bones from high chair accidents result in nearly 10,000 trips to the ER each year. Always supervise your youngster while they eat and opt for high chairs with a three point or five point harness and crotch snap. The straps should fit snugly around your child. Also make sure the chair is positioned away from tables, walls and counters, which your child can use to kick or push her feet against, causing the chair to topple. Booster seats should also be secured to a chair with the tray firmly attached. Just in case. Accidents happen and kids get sick. Because we don’t always think clearly in emergency situations, plan ahead for trips to the ER. Know where your closest ER is located. If possible, choose a pediatric ER designed specifically for children, ages 18 and under. Store a list of your child’s medications and allergies on your phone that you can easily access and show the ER physician. Set aside a small emergency kit that you can quickly grab that includes a list of your child’s current medications, allergies, medical history and name of their primary care doctor. Take your child’s favorite comfort object like a stuffy, blanket or pacifier. Identify caretakers who can help with your other children while you’re gone.

Helping First-Time Fathers Adjust Postpartum By Denise Yearian

When a child is born, much emphasis is placed on helping the new mother and baby adjust. But they aren’t the only ones undergoing change. Most first-time fathers experience stress due to sleep deprivation, change in routines and their own apprehensions about parenting. “There are a myriad of emotions that come with being a new father,” says Armin Brott, author of multiple books and one DVD on fatherhood. “Most often it’s a feeling of pride and excitement. At the same time there can be apprehensions—‘Will I be a good father?’ ‘Can we afford this?’ ‘How is this going to change our lives?’” This was what David Wuttke found. “When my son David Jr. was born, I had overwhelming feelings of anxiety and excitement all at once,” he says. “I had been babysitting since I was 16, so my anxiety wasn’t about child care. It was the reality of the responsibility that this was my son. And that sent a shock to my system.” Just knowing there’s another person to care for can be a big stressor for first-time fathers. Couple that with Our Kids App Available on Itunes & Google Play

the fact that many men don’t initially know how to bond with their newborns. “If a mother is nursing, it naturally brings her in contact with the baby,” says Brott. “Dads don’t have that same natural bonding method, so they often get stuck doing the dirty work. But it shouldn’t be that way.” Susan Maroto, LCSW and parent educator in prenatal care and postpartum adjustment, agrees. “There are things moms can do to help dads feel competent in that role,” she says. “Encourage them to take part in all areas of child care—feeding, bathing, reading and putting the baby down. Just be careful you aren’t overly critical. Standing behind your husband and correcting his every move will only frustrate him. Show him what needs to be done then let him develop his own style.” Fortunately for Wuttke, basic training occurred as a teen sitter and paid big dividends when his son was born. Soon after his wife Christine delivered, she enrolled in college and David was thrust into solo evening child care. June 2019 | OurKidsMagazine.com

“I never had to think about how to take care David. I just fell back on my babysitting days,” says Wuttke. “If he was crying, I would say, ‘Okay, let’s guess what he needs!’ Then I’d check his diaper. If that was okay, I’d try to feed him. If he wasn’t hungry, I thought maybe he had gas or needed to sleep. One of those usually did the trick.” For Anthony Franco, the adjustment wasn’t that easy. When his wife Lisa gave birth to the twins, Franco seemed to be fine. But four months into it, things changed. “I started experiencing panic attacks and didn’t know why,” he remembers. “I would be in the supermarket when all of the sudden I would get this overwhelming sense of dread and lightheadedness.” This went on for several months until Franco finally went to the doctor. “He asked me where it was happening, and I told him it was when I was buying diapers, formula and other things for the twins,” he continues. “That’s when he pinpointed the problem. He said this happens to a lot of new fathers. He prescribed a little anti-anxiety medication and then I was fine.” Brott believes it’s important for men to have someone with whom they can share their stress. “Some men have close friends they can confide in. But a lot don’t, so they keep all those concerns in and the stress level builds,” he says. “They shouldn’t be afraid to talk with other men and find out what they have gone through. Chances are they’ll find others felt the same way too.” One concern most new fathers share is fatigue. Franco and Wuttke both had a hard time with this. “The one thing I really didn’t expect was that time on a 24-hour clock had no meaning anymore,” says Franco. “It became irrelevant after a while and we just fit sleep in whenever we could.” The Wuttkes solved this problem by enlisting the help of relatives. “There were times Chris and I said, ‘We need a break,’ and my mom would take David so we could rest. We even called my grandparents so we could have an occasional night out.” Extended family and friends can be a huge help or add significant stress, depending upon the dynamic of the relationship, say experts. This is where husbands can help their wives by setting boundaries. “Dad should take the role of communicator outside the family and, if needed, limit visitors,” says Maroto. “Encourage others to help in practical ways such as dropping off meals, running errands or watching the baby for 20 minutes so the couple can take a quick walk.” What’s most important is to realize this is a period of adjustment and life does get easier. “It’s like anything new, it takes a little time,” says Franco. “It took about 18 months before I became completely comfortable with the twins. Now we’re pretty much inseparable.” Denise Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and six grandchildren.
