elcome to the first instalment of British Cinematographer’s Expo Guide series. Due to the challenges presented by the pandemic, it’s been a tough time for so many industries, the film and event communities included. Nothing beats networking with your peers and making new connections face-to-face, so we are excited for the industry to gather once again, with all the necessary safety measures in place, of course. We’re kicking off this new publication - which complements the existing magazine and digital offerings - by looking at what to expect at Cine Gear which is taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Centre in late September. This edition features an interview with the event’s chief executive Juliane Grosso in which she reveals what you can expect to see at the show, how Cine Gear kept going through the pandemic, and the measures that will be in place at this year’s show to ensure the safety and health of attendees and exhibitors. You’ll also find a round-up of the key innovations and new products you will discover on the show floor. Outside of the new kit introductions, there’s plenty to look forward to at the event including roundtables, screenings, and seminars led by industry leaders such as the Lighting Master Class, featuring cinematographers including Autumn Durald Arkapaw; Shane Hurlbut ASC; Kira Kelly ASC; and Matthew Libatique ASC. The premier US cinema technology exhibition is back for 2021 at a new venue but with its established product displays, seminars, and Film Competition. Cine Gear Expo chief executive Juliane Grosso tells Kevin Hilton about what will be on offer this September and how the event has kept going through COVID.

C

ine Gear Expo has been providing a showcase for filmmaking equipment and technology, as well as the overall media and entertainment sectors, since 1996. It attracts leading cinema professionals both as visitors and as speakers at its seminar sessions, with the ASC workshops always a big draw. Exhibitors include both key home-grown US companies and big-name manufacturers

This year, due to restrictions, the Expo will move to Los Angeles Convention Centre, Southern California's most technologically advanced green venue, featuring soaring ceilings and ample space for exhibits and seminars.

from around the world. This September sees the event return in full physical form after not taking place last year, like so many other trade exhibitions, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike other shows, however, the organisers of Cine Gear Expo decided against an online alternative. “The live event was cancelled for 2020,” acknowledges Juliane Grosso, who has been a director of the Expo since it began 25 years ago and became chief executive in 2012. “We did not have a virtual trade show, but we did have a virtual marketplace with a

number of our companies that participate in the show. And we started a series called Cine Gear ON AIR, which was various seminars and productions that we normally have [but online].” Central to this, as it has been at previous ‘in-person’ expos, was what Grosso calls “the dialogue with ASC cinematographers”, which she says always gets “a big turnout” each year. “We had an excellent virtual panel and, I believe, 13 or 14 cinematographers from all over the world. Some were checking in from the UK, New Zealand and, obviously, the Americas. We also had our Film Competition [in virtual form] and that worked very nicely for our young filmmakers that participate. So, we did our best to keep things alive virtually.” As 2020 became 2021 and vaccination programmes and COVID prevention measures began to show some success in dealing with the pandemic, there was hope that events such as exhibitions, trade shows, as well as live concerts and wide-scale film/TV production, would begin to happen again. Like many other exhibition organisers, Cine Gear Expo announced dates for this year but in the knowledge that the show actually happening still relied on many factors that could change as time went on. “On 15 June we received news that California would open up for events, as did Los Angeles County, Los Angeles City and LA health and safety,” explains Grosso. “It wasn’t until that time we got the green light and the guidelines of what could be done.” At that stage the intention was still to hold Cine Gear Expo at its regular venue on the Paramount Studio Lot. was announced to not be operational for events, causing the show organisers to make the decision to move it to the Los Angeles Convention Centre. “All the features of the show, indoor/ outdoor booths, seminars, screenings and master classes can be implemented there,” Grosso comments. She describes the venue, which is located in downtown Los Angeles, as Southern California’s most technologically advanced green venue, featuring “soaring ceilings” and “ample space” for exhibits and seminars. In a city dominated by the motor car perhaps more than most other US cities, it is probably reassuring to know that the Convention Centre has one of the largest dedicated parking structures in Los Angeles, offering more than 15,000 spaces in the immediate area. There is also a variety of public transit options to and from the expo and the Centre is close to the LA LIVE entertainment complex. This includes the Nokia Theatre, the Staples Centre Arena, The Grammy Museum, top restaurants and The Ritz Carlton Hotel and Residences. With COVID still a high risk, the major advantage of the Los Angeles Convention Centre is that it is recognised as the “gold standard” of safe venues by having GBAC (Global Birorisk Advisory Council) STAR accreditation. This lays out rules and guidelines for cleaning protocols, disinfection, and prevention of infectious diseases, which minimize the risks associated with novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) and other “infectious agents”. “It is a very safe environment,” Grosso states. “It meets all the CDC (US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention) protocols, [including for] filtration. Right now in LA, everyone must wear a mask, whether they’re vaccinated or not. We will have hand sanitisers [at the show] and be requiring proof of vaccination or a 72-hour negative COVID test. We will also have testing on site should people not have been tested in time. That’s how it’s set to happen as of 22 July and we’re able to have our exhibits, screenings, presentations and the film competition.” At the time of this interview, the confirmed events to take place during Cine Gear Expo 2021 were: Dialogue (panel discussion) with ASC Cinematographers, moderated by education and outreach committee chair George Spiro Dibie ASC; a presentation by the International Cinematographers Guild (Local 600); seminars from Blackmagic and Zeiss; and the Moviemaker Pitch Session.

On Saturday 25 September between 4pm and 7pm the Lighting Master Class will take place, with Sony as premium partner. This will feature a panel of cinematographers - including Autumn Durald Arkapaw (DP on episodes of Loki and currently filming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Shane Hurlbut ASC (Terminator Salvation), Kira Kelly ASC (lockdown comedy series Connecting) and Matthew Libatique ASC (A Star is Born, Birds of Prey) - discussing and demonstrating their techniques and problem-solving skills. There will also be a series of Premier Seminars featuring members of the ASC, the International Cinematographers Guild, and the Society of Camera Operators. These will include a Gaffer Roundtable, Mysteries of Camera Prep with moving picture technicians’ union IATSE, and Large Format Cinematography: Aesthetic and Technical Benefits and Challenges (Digital Cinema Society). The work of the finalists in this year’s Film Competition will be shown in a virtual

screening from 12pm to 5pm on Saturday 18 September 2021. Viewing is free on phones, tablets, computers, and connected TVs. More details can be found on the Cine Gear Expo website (address below). The US is looking to ease its current stringent travel restrictions on who can enter the country from abroad. The Biden administration is organising a plan whereby any visitors will need to show they have been fully vaccinated against COVID to gain entry. Whether this will come into operation by the time of Cine Gear Expo is uncertain. Currently most non-US citizens who have been in the UK, the 26 Schengen nations in Europe without border controls, Republic of Ireland, China, India, South Africa, Iran, and Brazil within a preceding 14-day period are barred from entering. “Travel restrictions are certainly challenging for visitors to the US,” Grosso agrees. “There’s nothing we can do about that. But I do think we’ll have a very successful event this year. We’re going to do the best we can, and I believe we will have some international presence. It may be through the US counterparts of [overseas companies] but we do have clients that are still signed on and want to do the show. The virtual events have their place but there’s really nothing like the personal meet and greet when you see someone face-to-face and have that interaction.” n The 2021 Cine Gear Expo takes place at the Los Angeles Convention Centre on 24th and 25th September. Kevin Hilton rounds up the new and recent products on show at Cine Gear Expo and on general release in 2021.

T

his year’s Cine Gear Expo returns as a physical live event which is a fantastic achievement given the difficult circumstances experienced by so many due to the pandemic. British Cinematographer is proud to support and be part of the show and is looking forward to a physical event offering the opportunity to see new kit and meet with the companies exhibiting and fellow attendees. British Cinematographer presents a preview of the companies exhibiting (at the time of going to press) along with the innovations they plan to present on the show floor. This product overview has also been expanded to include a selection of new equipment and technology released so far this year. Where possible, it is stated which companies will be at the show in the Los Angeles Convention Centre.

CAMERAS

The last ten years saw a steady stream of new camera releases as digital models appeared from all the main manufacturers for top-end, big feature cinematography to lower-end, smaller budget/independent productions. That activity slowed in recent times, with mostly firmware upgrades and additions to existing models. Panasonic, like other exhibitors, has had to change its arrangements to accommodate the late venue change for Cine Gear Expo. It will be showing the recently launched (in July) Lumix GH5M2 hybrid mirrorless camera, which offers 4K 60p 4:2:0 10-bit video recording and wireless (WiFi) live streaming capability by connecting to the user’s mobile phone. It is described as having smoother image stabilisation and includes V-Log for easier integration with S1H/S footage. Also on display will be the BGH1 mirrorless cinema and live production box camera, the Full Frame S1H, which had a recent firmware update to give a maximum output of 29.97p 5.9K/59.94p 4K and anamorphic 3.5K, and the S5 compact, Full Frame member of the Lumix family. There were plans for a different division of Panasonic to exhibit the VariCam 35 4K and EVA1 5.7K S35 cameras but there was no confirmation as whether the two divisions of the company would be sharing a booth. 06 | The EXPO Guide 2021 | Cine Gear

Blackmagic Design is not planning a presence at Cine Gear Expo. Its current focus is on the URSA Mini Pro 12K, with its Super 35 sensor and 14 stops of dynamic range, which recently dropped in price, and the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, which, like the URSA, records in Blackmagic RAW and has external USB-C external media capability as well as CFast Media and a 5-inch screen for focusing. Blackmagic Design also recently announced version 17.3 of DaVinci Resolve.

Several major camera companies that will not be at Cine Gear Expo have introduced new or upgraded products over the last 12 months. In October 2020, RED Digital Cinema launched the KOMODO 6K system. This includes a global 27.03mm x 14.26mm shutter sensor and operates at 6K/40fps, 6K WS/50fps and 4K/60fps. Other features include: a 4-cubic inch form factor, RF mount that can accept adaptors for EF, PL and other lenses, an integral colour LED touch screen display and new REDCODE RAW settings with HQ, MQ and LQ compression options. Sony has continued to update its FX9 Full Frame camera based on customer consultation. This year has seen several upgrades, with version 3.0 adding anamorphic mode, S700PTP remote protocol, centre scan mode for Super 16mm lenses and B4 lens support through an adaptor. Previous additions include: QFHD 120p RAW output with XDCA-FX9, full frame 4K 60p/50p recording with oversampling, FHD 180fps shooting, DCI 4K recording, 16-bit RAW output (with XDCA-FX9) and support for a DWX digital wireless audio receiver. In March, ARRI announced a new version of the AMIRA camera. The S35 AMIRA Live is designed for multi-camera broadcast work and has been designed without external cabling between the camera body and fibre adapter. A key part of the system is the VMM-1 10-inch onboard monitor, which connects directly to the viewfinder interface or can be daisy-chained with the Camera Control Panel CCP-1.

LENSES Musashi Optical will be at Cine Gear Expo with its new Takumi 2 Full Frame and Large Format compatible lens. The 29-120mm 4.1x zoom T2.9 model is the company’s third cinema optic and has a fast T2.9 constant aperture, nine rounded iris blades, integrated flange back focus adjustment for set-up and fine tuning and an optional TA-129A handle accessory (which is sold separately). Panasonic is intending to show the new Leica 25-50mm F1.7 lens, which joins the Micro Four Thirds system and is designed for its Lumix range of DSLRs. The new optical is a wide zoom with a focal length of f25-50mm (35mm camera equivalent 50-100mm), nine diaphragm blades/circular aperture diaphragm, with a maximum aperture of F1.7 and a minimum of F16. Also on display should be a full assortment of recently announced Prime lenses for Full Frame, plus many of Panasonic’s legacy lenses. Schneider Optics will be present with its current range of cinematography lenses. These include the Xenon FF-Primes, offering 18 mm T2.4, 25 mm T2.1, 35 mm T2.1, 50 mm T2.1, 75 mm T2.1 and 100 mm T2.1 focal lengths for leading cine brands such as Blackmagic Design, Sony, ARRI and RED as well as HDSLRs; the Xenon FF-Prime Tilt range, designed to capture outof-focus areas in the frame, with a 4-degree tilt angle on the sensor plane corresponding to an 80-degree focal plane; Cine-Xenar III lenses with a high resolution telecentric design and focal lengths of 18, 25, 35, 50, 75 and 95 mm; and the Century series for wide-angles, telephoto, close-ups and fish-eye effects. 08 | The EXPO Guide 2021 | Cine Gear

Fujifilm had not committed to attending the show at the time of going to press but if it does attend, it will show the Premista Series of wideangle zoom lenses launched at the beginning of this year. This covers 19-45, 28-100 and 80-250. Other possible exhibits are the MK-RF, MK lenses for use on RF cameras such as RED KOMODO, the new SK35-700 PL-mount, S35 box lens for Cinematic production and the Chrosziel servo for Premista lenses.

Tokina announced its new product road map for 2021-22 earlier in the year, working against what it called “unstable global supply of materials and electronic components”. New products for 2021 include six Prime lenses to fit the Sony E (APS-C) and Fujifilm X mounts. A new Super Tele 500mm F8 reflex MR mirror lens featuring the universal mount system is due during the winter. Zeiss added four new focal lengths to the Supreme Prime Radiance range in April. The 18mm and 135mm focal lengths bring telephoto and wide-angle capability to the seven focal lengths already available. The new 40mm and 65mm lenses are designed to “enhance” the standard range. Overall, the Supreme Prime Radiance family is now a self-contained series covering all possible applications for high-end film production. The range now comprises 11 lenses, each with a maximum aperture of T1.5, high speed, and the ability to operate in low-light conditions.

These include: Technical Filters, with the RHOdium Full Spectrum Neutral Density, Neutral Density, True-Pol Polarizer, Clear and UV, True-Cut IR, Diopter, LowCon 2000 and DigiCon, QuarterWave Retarder; Emotional Filters, featuring Radiant Soft, Classic Soft, HD Classic Soft, Classic Black Soft, Double Classic Black Soft, Hollywood Black Magic, Black Frost, White Frost, True-Net; the True-Streak Sensational Filter; and Colour Effect filters offering solid colours. Teradek is bringing its ranges of wireless camera and lens control systems to Cine Gear Expo. In July, ARRI launched the fifth-generation version of its intelligent hand unit. The Hi-5 is a wireless camera and lens controller designed to replace the WCU-4. It is part of ARRI’s Electronic Control System (ECS) platform and incorporates a new radio system, intelligent batteries, smart focus rings and an iOS app. Both robust and weatherproof, the Hi-5 would typically be used by the focus puller or First AC. It features a modern touch screen interface based on a camera GUI, which should be familiar to the user. The ARRI ECS Sync App is designed to work with the Hi-5 to make updating lens file management and software are faster and easier. Vocas Systems will be at the show to highlight the MFC-2 Cine deluxe follow focus kit. This features the company’s signature walnut finish for the knob and adjustable palm support of the unit. It also has 1:1,75 gear ratio for the long focus throw of Cine style lenses. The full kit comprises: MFC-2 15 mm snap-on bracket 0500-1010; MFC-2 Gear unit 1:1.75 ratio 0500-1110; MFC-2/6 Knob wood 0500-1211; MFC2S Palm support wood 0500-1300; and MFC-2 Drive gear M0,8/40T 0500-0601. Vocas also produces basic and deluxe DSLR versions of the MFC-2 follow focus kit.

LIGHTING Cineo Lighting will not be at Cine Gear Expo but in July updated the ReFlex R15 high output hard source, which has spot and flood settings, and the LB800 LED white light panel, which was introduced earlier this year, with the C2OS software release. New features include support for Art-Net/sACN over wired Ethernet and enhancements and improvements to the Effects Player. ARRI’s newest lighting product is aimed at studio broadcasting, an area the company has been moving into over the past few years. ARRI LightNet is a software platform that enables centralised monitoring, fault finding and management of broadcast studio lighting networks. It is designed to be used in conjunction with other manufacturers’ products and systems as well as its own and can be run from either its own dedicated control interface or the existing controller in a broadcast facility. Designed by ARRI’s Solutions Group, LightNet can display and monitor all elements in a studio lighting setup, including luminaires, consoles, network switches, splitters and nodes. It can work with both IP-based and DMX-controlled systems and has a graphical user interface and the ability to be controlled from anywhere inside or outside the studio centre.

The Chroma-Q products to be shown at Cine Gear Expo include the Studio Force II range of lighting fixtures for studios, comprising the 12, 48 and 72 models, which all feature the ColorSure technologies found in other Chroma-Q products. Also on display will be the Color Force II creative range, with cyc. wash and other effects; Studio One 100 white LED source; the Space Force family of space lights and LED panels; the Brute Force Wendy Light alternatives; and the Sandi video conference key light.

Quasar Science, a recent addition to the Vitec Group, has confirmed its presence at the show and will showcase the updated Rainbow2 (R2) and Double Rainbow (RR) Linear LED Lights. These maintain the colour integrity of the original versions and introduce improvements in flexibility and network control. The more compact R2 has a single row of bright RGBX light, while the RR expands on that with two rows to provide more output and doubling the effects realism. Both lights house a full suite of wired and wireless connection protocols, including DMX, CRMX, Bluetooth, WiFi, sACN and ArtNet, in addition to manual UI. RR and R2 both feature the newly developed Ossium Mounting System, which adapts to a range of hardware accessories for easy rigging.

HARDWARE Mark Roberts Motion Control (MRMC) was still to decide if it was going to be at Cine Gear Expo, but if it does exhibit, it will feature a Bolt X rig. This would be in conjunction with Diamond View, a virtual production studio provider based in Tampa, Florida that is a major user of Bolt X. The system has the longest reach arm (3.2 metres from the rotate centre) of MRMC’s range of high-speed robots. It has a vertical travel of nearly five metres, starting from its lowest position to the maximum height of 4.3 metres. Bolt X runs using Flair motion control software, which can handle up to 500 axes of motion, as well as interfacing with CGI packages.

Preserving the vision The British Society of Cinematographers is an educational, social and professional organisation. Since its formation in 1949, its prime objective has been to promote and encourage the highest standards in the art and craft of cinematography. Our membership, which is by invitation only, is comprised of some of the most talented Directors of Photography and Camera Operators in the United Kingdom. It also encompasses many distinguished friends and patrons from the film and television industry. The society run numerous events throughout the year which encompass the BSC Expo, technical presentations, exhibitions, question and answer screenings, Summer Lunch and Operators Night, are popular for members to get together. In celebration of our 70th Anniversary in 2019 we held our inaugural BSC Awards evening in London. This has become a major social event in the Society’s calendar, with our fourth awards evening taking place in February 2022.

Battery specialist GripTrix is on the exhibitor list for the show and will be showing the Electrix Pro Blue 1.2kWh Power System. This is available in 26V or 48V versions and fills in the gaps between small and large batteries. The batteries are lightweight with a high capacity and designed to be highly portable. The system uses separate components to facilitate battery charging. This means it is possible to operate a battery while simultaneously charging another battery, thereby having continuous operation. The battery features multiple DC connection options, including both fixed and precision digital programmable voltages. These are adjustable from 3V to battery voltage on the XLR4 outputs, plus the option of additional AC utility with the GripTrix 1000W pure sine wave inverter. Charging times are 2.6 hours or 1.5 hours with the optional high speed 30A charger, ensuring the portable power is always available. The system can be used for lighting, cameras, cranes, and remote heads.

WORKFLOW AND POST-PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY

Blackmagic Design is not planning a presence at Cine Gear Expo. It did, however, recently announce a significant update to DaVinci Resolve. Adding support for an entirely new processing engine, version 17.3 runs three times faster on Apple Mac models using the M1 chip. With these speed improvements, users can now playback, edit and grade 4K projects quicker and even work on 8K projects on an Apple M1 notebook. Alongside that update, Blackmagic Design has also announced a price reduction on the URSA Mini Pro 12K to $5995, making high-resolution workflows on low cost hard more accessible. At the same time, M1 laptops also benefit from a 30% longer battery life when working in DaVinci Resolve. A new userselectable option allows users to prioritize speed vs quality for h.265 renders on M1 hardware, improving render times by up to 65%.

Mac and PC storage specialist OWC (Other World Computing) will exhibit at the show. In July, the company announced its new Envoy Pro SX, a Thunderbolt portable SSD (solid state drive). It can be used as a bus-powered drive for daily storage and backups for audio, video design and photography workflows, with speeds of up to 2847MB/s1 using modern Thunderbolt and USB4 equipped Macs and PCs. Although it will not be at Cine Gear Expo, EditShare has already made some significant upgrades to its EFS software-defined open storage system and FLOW media management platform. The main enhancements for EFS include improvements in the new web-based user interface for controlling the system. This has user group support and allows for viewing and searching of media spaces to which each group has been assigned. Operationally, the default speed for EFS background functions is now 20 times faster, making the system more efficient when a new storage node is added. FLOW now supports both the NewTek NDI (network device interface) protocol and H.265 (High Efficiency Video Coding). Also supported is the import of .mxf/r3d file samples for mapping configuration purposes. This is important for those on Avid workflows because it reveals metadata in supported media files and enables fast configuring of metadata-mapping into FLOW custom fields. There is also support for importing and mapping sidecar XML to non-video files, such as still images. This allows facilities with large photo libraries and other non-video catalogues to move to FLOW and begin work on productions. There is also ‘live’ monitoring, configuration, and workflow management, with previewing of live ingest sources in web applications and integration with Mobius Vision AI for facial recognition. n
