PROJECT REPORT

PHILIPPINES 2022 – COMMUNITY FORESTRY PALAWAN

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Dear friend, Thanks to your support, a total of 5,000 trees were planted to restore 1.51 hectares of land in Palawan. Planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested helps the environment by accelerating and assuring the re-establishment of healthy forests. Through reforestation, the canopy is restored, ecosystems are made whole, and biodiversity can thrive. None of this would be possible without you. On behalf of everyone at One Tree Planted, thank you! What follows is a report outlining the project you supported in the Philippines. I hope you enjoy reading it and truly feel the impact you have made.

OVERVIEW

This reforestation project aimed to rehabilitate areas in Barangay Apurawan, Palawan. that have been used for illegal logging and slash and burn activity in the past. The plantings were expanded to watersheds for conservation of forest cover, additional biodiversity habitat, and enrichment of riparian areas. More than 15 species of native hardwood, fruit trees and bamboo were planted alongside the local communities. The new trees will enrich the forest cover of the watershed as well as the biodiversity of the area. The communities, most of whom are farmers, will also largely benefit from the fruit and bamboo trees. As the trees grow, they will improve food security and local tourism, provide diverse income opportunities and promote sustainable livelihoods.

TREE SPECIES PLANTED Around 20 species of native hardwood, fruit trees and bamboo were planted with the participation of the local community. The project will enrich the forest cover of the watershed as well as the whole biodiversity of the area. Similarly, the community, most of whom are farmers will benefit from the fruit trees and bamboo that was planted. Hereafter, Apurawan will be a tree farm park open for tourism, that will serve as a sustainable livelihood to increase community income.

DOCUMENTING YOUR IMPACT Through authentic and informative storytelling, we help donors relate to the people who plant their trees and to the impact they're making for the planet. We share photos, videos, and updates from our global projects across our social media, website, and other media to create a personal connection to the incredible work happening on the ground.

BIODIVERSITY BENEFITS Trees have an important role in the environment. They provide shelter, protection and food to wildlife, as well as to human beings. They also regulate ecosystems, providing clean air and absorbing air pollution, reducing extreme temperatures, combating global warming, and improving the land’s capacity to adapt to climate change. Trees also play an essential role in the prevention of soil erosion and flooding, because the stabilize the soil with their roots and reduce the amount of storm water runoff. The Apurawan region serves as a catch basin with water flowing toward two major rivers. This critical biodiversity area has been neglected, and with less protection and management interventions it exposes valuable resources to unsustainable use for survival and development. This project addresses these challenges and threats and promotes conservation, protection and preservation in the region.

COMMUNITY

BENEFITS

The new forest will provide opportunities for recreation, education and cultural enrichment. Proper and sustainable utilization of natural resources provides diverse opportunities to create sustainable livelihoods for communities. In addition, it is a source of food security and sustenance. The plantings also created local jobs in the monitoring, maintenance and protection of the trees. This project also aims to jump-start wider and bigger environmental activities in the area. The creation of more community-based conserved areas will provide enhanced ecosystem services like clean water resources, resilience to flooding and climate threats, increased tourism activities and sustainable income for local families.

U.N. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS THIS PROJECT CONTRIBUTED TO THE FOLLOWING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

WHAT ARE SDGS? Sustainable development entails seeking out solutions that not only boost the economic outcomes of developing and poorer nations, but also work to limit (or eliminate) our impact on the planet. Trees are one such solution. From creating jobs and reducing hunger to improving gender equality, cleaning air and water, absorbing carbon, protecting life on land and water, and more, planting trees can address all 17 sustainable development goals.

"Planting trees here will protect, restore, and conserve Thailand's forest and related resources. As the trees grow, they will largely benefit local farmers and their community, improve soil and water conservation, store carbon, regulate extreme temperatures, increase wildlife habitat and improve the land's capacity to adapt to climate change.”
