New Zealand 2021 - Papakura Stream Restoration

Page 1

Dear friend, Thanks to your support, a total of 7,500 trees were planted to restore 4 hectares of land across Brookby, Auckland. By planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested, reforestation helps the environment by guaranteeing or accelerating the re-establishment of healthy forest structure by regrowing the forest canopy and preserving biodiversity within the ecosystem. None of this would be possible without you. On behalf of everyone at One Tree Planted, thank you! What follows is a report outlining the project you supported in New Zealand. I hope you enjoy reading it and truly feel the impact you have made.

WOMEN INVOLVED

Originally established as a farming community with few people living in the area, Brookby is now a fastgrowing community in Auckland, NZ. Its Papakura stream and its catchment are home to endangered species such as bats, kaka and longfin eel.

The Papakura Stream Restoration Project planted trees to restore and protect the waterway and wildlife habitat for native species. This project aims to restore 5 kilometres of the Papakura Stream over the next three years to protect stream banks, water quality, and habitat. The planted trees will also help increase canopy cover in the catchment, sequestering carbon as they grow.

As the trees grow, they'll reduce the rate of sedimentation and runoff entering the stream, stabilize stream banks, and provide shade to this freshwater system. A wetland area adjacent to the stream will also be planted — and will act as a filter to improve water quality and reduce flooding. The planted trees will provide food and habitat for native species, including the threatened kaka and New Zealand bat.

This project encourages landowners to restore their riparian zones and identify public spaces (such as council reserves) for planting events. The community is also provided with education on how to protect local waterways. Landowners on the Papakura Stream are very interested in restoring their stretch of stream. They know the importance of freshwater systems, but the main obstacles to restoration on private land are cost, lack of resources, and lack of know-how. This project aims to remove those obstacles and facilitate restoration.
