IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Dear L’Occitane North America, Thanks to your support, a total of 145,543 trees were planted to restore 216.24 hectares of land in Canada and the United States. We want to thank L'Occitane North America for helping to restore tree canopies at six sites in British Columbia, California, Georgia, and Appalachia this year! Your commitment to our partnership and to reforestation is admirable and inspiring, and we sincerely appreciate your unwavering support! What follows is a report outlining the projects you supported in North America. I hope you enjoy reading it and truly feel the impact you have made.

APPALACHIA

MINE SITE REHABILITATION The goal of this project is to promote the health of forest ecosystems in Appalachia by restoring native tree species in areas where they have become degraded. We are working to remove invasive species, decompact the land, and plant a diversity of native trees, as well as provide additional planting on non-mined sites. By doing this, we are increasing the resiliency of the forest ecosystem, while providing a number of benefits such as protection of water resources, increased stability to stream banks, and providing habitat to native wildlife.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

CANIM AND PLATEAU FIRES

This project is reforesting Douglas-fir stands burned in British Columbia and is a first-of-its-kind project to reduce the cost and time associated with post-burn reforestation. With over 400,000 hectares of distressed forest, this project could open up over one hundred thousand hectares worth of planting projects in British Columbia’s Interior. This project aims to transition low-skilled labor to better-paid, more-skilled jobs, and it will also help to improve the environment by increasing the number of trees planted in the area.

BRITISH COLUMBIA

WILLIAMS LAKE RESTORATION

This project reforested areas that burned in the 2017 Hanceville wildfire. These lands were severely burned and were not expected to reforest naturally except in the very long term. The planted trees will provide various habitat benefits and sequester carbon from the atmosphere. The reforestation efforts aim to mimic natural regeneration by requiring the planting distribution to be clumpy and leaving natural voids when there is no suitable microsite. The planting prioritized restoration of areas near wetlands — this aids in the restoration of visual and thermal vegetation cover, which is essential for mule deer and moose habitat.

CALIFORNIA CARR FIRE RESTORATION

This project will make a lasting impact on the Clear Creek Watershed by restoring the habitat for local species, providing the public with access to a recreational area and fishing, and giving the small family landowner a chance to recover from the 2018 Carr Fire. The project works closely with the local partners, registered professional foresters, and the landowner to make the reforestation process as seamless as possible. Through site preparation, seedling sourcing, and planting of Ponderosa Pine, the project will create a lasting impact on the property, the watershed, and the environment as a whole.

RIM WILDFIRE RESTORATION

The project will also provide economic benefits to the local community, such as increased recreation opportunities, jobs, and increased local business revenues. The project will create several hundred jobs in the short-term, and additional long-term jobs in forest management and recreational-related businesses. Through collaboration, the project will also balance the needs of the community, environmental organizations, and other stakeholders. By restoring the old forest structure and open canopy structure, the project will create a healthier ecosystem for both humans and wildlife, improving the health of the watershed, the local economy, and the quality of life for all those in the area.

GEORGIA

NORTH GEORGIA RESTORATION

This project will plant a variety of native pine and hardwood tree species to reforest private lands in northern Georgia. Reforestation should provide clean air, clean water, and wildlife habitat. Families will benefit economically, and communities will benefit from the clean air and water provided by these forests. In addition to providing environmental benefits, families and communities will also benefit economically from the project. The increased value of the land, increased tourism, and job opportunities that come from the project will boost local economies and help to support livelihoods for those living in the area.
