Germany 2023 - Climate Resilient Restoration

PROJECT REPORT

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT Dear friend, Thanks to your support, a total of 177,796 trees were planted to restore 160 hectares of land in multiple sites in Bavaria, Sauerland, Harz. Planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested helps the environment by accelerating and assuring the re-establishment of healthy forests. Through reforestation, the canopy is restored, ecosystems are made whole, and biodiversity can thrive. None of this would be possible without you. On behalf of everyone at One Tree Planted, thank you! What follows is a report outlining the project you supported in Germany. I hope you enjoy reading it and truly feel the impact you have made.

OVERVIEW

Germany’s 11.4M hectares of forest land - about one-third of the country - are noticeably damaged. The 2020 Forest Condition Report states that 2020 was the year with the most dead trees examined ever. Drought, storm and pest infestation (mostly in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 summers) are the challenges that need to be addressed with sustainable reforestation to combat climate change. The outbreak of bark beetles in Germany is a symptom of weakened trees through a changing climate. This project worked alongside local landowners in a mix of low-grade agricultural and degraded forest land in Bavaria. These areas have been damaged by drought, storms and the bark beetle. The objective of this reforestation effort is to restore these lands by planting different species and creating a mixed forest, thus making it more resilient to climate change and pests. The new trees will also enhance ecosystem services and largely benefit the surrounding communities.

TREE SPECIES PLANTED We planted 51 different tree species, providing a boost to local biodiversity and particular insect populations (most places had or have landscapes with typical monocultures of spruce).

SPECIES PLANTED THROUGH THIS PROJECT Quercus robur Pinus nigra Abies alba Pseudotsuga menziesii Abies grandis Quercus rubra and others.

MY SINCERE GRATITUDE TO THE MANY DONORS WHOSE GENEROUS CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN ACHIEVING THIS REFORESTATION MISSION IN GERMANY. YOUR SUPPORT IS NOT ONLY HELPING GET TREES ON THE GROUND, BUT IT IS ALSO SOWING THE SEEDS OF HOPE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. THIS EFFORT AIMS TO ACHIEVE LONG-TERM ECOLOGICAL TRANSFORMATION, RESTORING VITAL ECOSYSTEMS AND MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACTS. THIS PROJECT ASPIRES TO CREATE A GREENER PLANET, WHERE BIODIVERSITY THRIVES, COMMUNITIES FLOURISH, AND FUTURE GENERATIONS INHERIT A HEALTHIER EARTH.

YOUR IMPACT ON THE MAP

DOCUMENTING YOUR IMPACT Through authentic and informative storytelling, we help donors relate to the people who plant their trees and to the impact they're making for the planet. We share photos, videos, and updates from our global projects across our social media, website, and other media to create a personal connection to the incredible work happening on the ground.

COMMUNITY

BENEFITS

Regular planting events with citizens from the region were organized and volunteers were engaged at every opportunity. We offer various training sessions to provide valuable knowledge and skills to individuals involved in our project. These trainings cover essential topics such as tree planting techniques and species identification. Participants learn how to properly plant a tree and understand the significance of restoring land. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of sustainable planting methods as well as maintenance to ensure long-term environmental benefits.

U.N. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS THIS PROJECT CONTRIBUTED TO THE FOLLOWING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS:

WHAT ARE SDGS? Sustainable development entails seeking out solutions that not only boost the economic outcomes of developing and poorer nations, but also work to limit (or eliminate) our impact on the planet. Trees are one such solution. From creating jobs and reducing hunger to improving gender equality, cleaning air and water, absorbing carbon, protecting life on land and water, and more, planting trees can address all 17 sustainable development goals.

"Planting trees here will protect, restore, and conserve Germany's forest and related resources. As the trees grow, they will improve soil and water conservation, store carbon, moderate local climate by providing shade, regulate extreme temperatures, increase wildlife habitat and improve the land's capacity to adapt to climate change.”
