Mexico 2021 - Jalisco and Querétaro

Page 1

THANK YOU Dear friend, Thanks to your support, a total of 40,000 trees were planted to restore 50 hectares of land in communities across El Magistral, Jalisco and Cuatro Palos, Queretaro. By planting trees in areas that have been degraded or deforested, reforestation helps the environment by guaranteeing, or accelerating the reestablishment of healthy forest structure by regrowing the forest canopy and preserving biodiversity within the ecosystem. None of this would be possible without you. On behalf of everyone at One Tree Planted, thank you! What follows is a report outlining the project you supported in Mexico. I hope you enjoy reading it and truly feel the impact you have made.

SITE FACTS: El Magistral is a strategic zone for the retention and storage of water for the region. This reforestation work will benefit this area greatly. Reforestation in Cuatro Palos will help to improve the habitat of many endangered species that inhabit the area, such as cougars, lynxes, tigrillos and ocelots.

The Donate a Tree to the World 2021 Campaign has a dual purpose of improving the environment and empowering the people of the local communities. These two rugged and beautiful regions that have lost trees due to animal grazing, soil erosion and illegal logging will be reforested with various species of native trees. The planting will be carried out mostly by the women and the youth of the local communities.

BIODIVERSITY BENEFITS Ecological benefits include: absorption of CO2 from the atmosphere to reduce greenhouse gases, reduced soil erosion, increased water retention in the soil and underground reserves, reduced local temperatures, increased shade in pastoral land, reduced likelihood of landslides and increased protection of native habitat, animals and insects.

COMMUNITY IMPACTS In Magistral, the income from the planting and maintenance wages will support the household economy of many local families, which live in poverty, given the few sources of labor in the community. Many of the trees planted will be able to provide resins, firewood and honey. The Cuatro Palos community relies on regular income from tourism. An agroforestry project in the region increases the possibility that the government can give better support and subsidies, to diversify economic sources for the local community.

"The project will empower mainly the women of Cuatro Palos and El Magistral communities by providing economic benefits and by raising their social and environmental awareness through our basic education program. Economic benefit for all communities includes direct compensation for their participation in the tree planting." Malcolm Porteus Gonzalez Project Manager Latin America and the Caribbean
