Crashing in the wake of fellow avantpop maestro’s, the Arcade Fire, Stars and The Fiery Furnaces, comes Architecture In Helsinki’s sophomore effort. Following in the adrenalised vein of their debut Fingers Crossed, In Case We Die is more assured and has an unabashed wide-screen appeal. Songs like ‘It’5!’, ‘Cemetery’ and opener ‘Neverevereverdid’ are glorious sonic experiments that revel in their own playful idiosyncrasies. The power-drill solo on ‘Frenchy, I’m Faking’, is a particularly deft touch of genius. This operetta album is a welcome harbinger of the Australian eight-piece’s potential. Can’t wait to hear their next one.

Architecture in Helsinki
To dismiss these guys as Police plagiarists would be a disservice to them. It would also be fair. Lead singer Rupert Lyddon even sounds a bit like the legendary Tantric wanker himself. This is by no means an insult. Grand National cull the best of the seminal ska-poppers oeuvre and splice it with some pleasant dancy and atmospheric bits that makes the whole spiel rather compelling and oddly beautiful. Album opener ‘Drink To Moving On’ is a moody tit-bit that’ll thrill you. ‘Playing in the Distance’ has an overdriven drum beat and bass jingle that recalls not only The Police but The Clash as well.

On first listen, you’d be inclined to slot this album neatly into your ‘dinner-party’ playlist. But Koop are far too gifted a group to be relegated to the much maligned easylistening genre. Their album resounds with tasty ambient interludes and plumped up Parisian passion. While it’s too schizophrenic to be considered straight jazz, Islands is filled with just enough deft instrumental noodlings to please more hardnosed fans. While I’d hesitate to call it sexy, there is just enough of a tongue-in-cheek erotic edge to it to make it prime bedroom fodder.
