Welcome to the 42nd CAMRA Peterborough Beer Festival elcome to the Peterborough Beer Festival, organised and run by the volunteers of the Peterborough & District branch of CAMRA – The CAMpaign for Real Ale. To celebrate our 42nd beer festival this year’s main theme is the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. As we all know 42 is the answer to the question of life, universe and everything, so we thought it apt to use it for our 42nd festival. The festival is a place for you to enjoy yourselves whilst sampling the many real ales, ciders, perrys, continental wines, flavoured gins etc... etc… Again, we are in four tents which many people walk around, around and around in, meeting old friends, trying to find that ideal drink, pick up a snack or dancing to the band. This information booklet contains all you need to know about the festival, whether it is knowing when your favourite band is playing, or finding that lemon and lemongrass wheat beer everyone has been talking about. As mentioned above, this festival is ran mostly by volunteers who give up their time

to create and staff the festival, undertaking a variety of jobs from ordering the beers, to setting up fences and of course serving. They receive no pay whatsoever, instead we supply beer vouchers, a subsidised canteen and tent space if required. Volunteering is fun, and we are always on the look out for new people. If you want to know more just ask at the staffing desk next to glasses.... please!! We have managed to keep our admission prices at the same level as last year in spite of ever rising costs. All CAMRA members get a discount and if you sign up at the Membership stand you will also get some free beer!! There are a wide range of membership benefits including regular trips to various pubs and events inside and outside the branch, eligibility to nominate and vote for the local pub of the year, and money off beer vouchers accepted in a host off pu pubs around the country. Drink on and enjoy… b but responsibly. M Matt Mace P Peterborough & District B Branch Chairman c chairman@real-ale.org.uk Coopering demonstration

Have Fun at the Festival

e all hope that your visit to the Beer Festival this year will be a memorable one. Remember without your support the festival could not take place, and the chance to sample some of the excellent brews on offer would be lost. Please try and imagine the festival marquees as one giant pub. Of course, as with all pubs there are certain rules we have to comply with. The times of opening are published in the programme and the marquees are completely non-smoking. Accompanied children are allowed in the bar marquees but please keep them away from the bar serveries. And remember that it is against the law to drink alcohol on site if you are under 18. You will need to buy a glass before you start. If it gets too sticky or you want to change glass sizes just take it back to the glasses counter and exchange it. The Beer Festival serves all beer, cider and wine in oversized glasses with government stamped line measured markings to ensure that you, the customer, gets a full measure in your glass. Please be careful if you put your glass down on a table, on the grass or anywhere that it could be knocked over and broken. If such an event does occur, please inform a member of staff or security that there is broken glass. On no account attempt to pick up the pieces yourself. We have staff with the proper equipment to retrieve it safely. Do not grind it into the grass! Other events take place on this site after we have finished.

PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2019

Be careful not to leave your glass unattended. Remember – You paid for it! To ensure you enjoy the festival at all times we advise you to start off with some light beers, say a mild or low gravity ale, then on to something a bit stronger. Starting off with the strongest beers on the menu means your taste buds get no chance to enjoy the different flavours that the various brews offer. As with any other pub we do have the right to eject any person who we feel is a threat to other customers or our staff. Thankfully this is a very rare occurrence. Also remember that, just like other pubs, you are not allowed to drink your own alcohol on site and illegal drugs are totally banned and their use will result in a call to the police. Finally let me remind you of the dedicated staff who are serving you at the festival. Every one of them is an unpaid volunteer, so please be patient at busy times. The person serving you may well have been on duty for the best part of the day, or the whole week and are naturally starting to flag a bit! You can help these people by joining CAMRA and offering to help run the festival. Cheers! Enjoy the Festival

to the bank holiday weekend and support this impressive range of talent playing on the big Beer Fest stage in a friendly atmosphere with “something for everyone”. Thanks to all that have expressed an interest in performing at PBF. If you believe that you or your band has the ability to entertain festival visitors in 2020, then please “e” mail details as below. We will be looking at options during the first quarter of next year. All times are approximate and subject to change. three piece, sometimes a duo or a five piece band (or more if the mood takes us). Performing the finest “Swingabilly” music around, Ramshackle Serenade have a happy vibe playing Rock and Roll with a twist. Songs are given the Ramshackle treatment much to the enjoyment of many and especially their happy band of followers, The Serenaders. With cool vocals, Rockin’ Gretsch Guitar,

Thumping Blues Bass, Legendary Drumming and the odd tambourine, harmonica, or kazoo all thrown into the pot for good measure. Ramshackle Serenade have played in venues and at festivals up and down the country and love to get the audience jumping, clapping, stamping, kazooing and singing with their ‘Ramshackled” take on classic tracks plus their own original material. They have shared the bill with some amazing acts over the years including the likes of Johnny Marr, Frank Turner, The Selector, Fun Loving Criminals, Jools Holland and his Orchestra, Bad Manners, Squeeze and lots more besides. Ramshackle Serenade ….. a superb live band who are seriously fun! http://ramshackleserenade.com/ https://www.facebook.com/ RamshackleSerenade/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 8.00PM

THURSDAY 22ND AUGUST Velocity Velocity are a fresh and high energy punk, indie and classic rock influenced power trio from Peterborough. Delivering classic and modern covers as well as their own material they never fail to excite. Velocity will be performing at Peterborough Beer Festival 2019, with a huge show planned and for the first time ever in the history of the band in Peterborough we will be performing as a four piece! Expect scenes like you have never seen before folks!! https://www.facebook.com/velocitytheband/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 7.00PM

The Ouse Valley Singles Club If you are not familiar with The Ouse Valley Singles Club or have yet to catch their live show then you are in for a treat. They are one of, if not the, most original outfits currently playing the live circuit. Influenced by the long forgotten sounds & traditions of 1950’s Skiffle (Google it) they combine this sound with the energy of Punk and the swing of Rock and Roll, whilst occasionally dropping some Reggae flavour into the mix. Then layering this with hilarious Folk-like story-telling, often crossing the parameters of what is deemed to be politically correct but keeping it very tongue in cheek. In doing this, they have created a truly original & highly entertaining sound that has been dubbed “New

Wave Skiffle” and they have been described as ‘George Formby meets The Clash’ where Vaudeville music Hall meets Working Men’s club. ‘The scourge of the Metropolitan Liberal Elite’ TOVSC put on a show that gives a hysterical observational account of every day tales of woe with a razor sharp observational narrative whilst rocking the crowds with their infectious ear-worms. Highlights of their musical journey came when they supported luminaries Chas and Dave on their 2014 tour, warmed up for Sir Bob Geldof and The Boomtown Rats in the main arena at the Great British Alternative Music Weekender at Butlins Skegness as well as providing warm up for the likes of Pete Doherty, The Wonderstuff and the poetical musical comedy genius KATG. Clearly illustrating their flexibility and appeal to audiences of all ages and musical backgrounds going down a storm and building their following at every gig they play. http://www.theousevalleysinglesclub.com/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 9.00PM

FRIDAY 23RD AUGUST Hereward Harmony Hereward Harmony are a 4 part acapela style barber shop chorus which consists of tenor, lead, bass and baritone vocals, the chorus has been established about 35 years and some of the older members have served for most of these years! Singing a variety of songs including traditional, hymns and most style of music, they sing in a variety of venues including churches and charity events. Rehearsals are every Thursday night at Orton Wistow and anybody who would like to have a go at singing is very welcome to come and try us! https://www.herewardharmony.com/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 4:30PM PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2019

Now featuring half of “The League of Mentalmen” with the press ganging of Mickey 9 Tails on guitar joining Droney Monotoney on bass and Harry Guantanamo on drums. This 4 piece energetic pop, punk, pirate band will kick off Friday evening murdering love songs for the lost ‘n’ lonely so……. Take what ya can!!!! Let there B/DC What makes AC/DC such an exciting, pulse pounding band and how do we recreate the fire of their live performances? That’s the main question we asked ourselves when we fired up the rock and roll train that was to become LET THERE B/DC in February 2011. Our current five man line-up have had AC/DC running through their veins since childhood and our passion for the music injects the venom into every show that we play. We deliver all the favourites such as Highway to Hell, Whole Lotta Rosie and Thunderstruck together with rare and seldom heard album tracks such as Walk All Over You, Soul Stripper and Kicked in The Teeth and many, many more. With our 3 original members consisting of Neil (Malcolm Young/Guitar), Paddy (Phil

Rudd/Drums) and Steve (Cliff Williams/Bass) making up the ‘engine room’, it gives our (Angus Young/Guitar) Dave and (Brian Johnson/ Bon Scott/Vocals) Andrew room to really fly and take our show to a whole new level. We pride ourselves on never usually playing the same set list twice, so you never know what you might hear! Whether you’ve been a fan from the very beginning or never seen us live before, we hope to see you all down the front. Are You Ready For A Good Time? https://www.lettherebdc.com/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 9.30PM

SATURDAY 24TH AUGUST AFTERNOON Matt Howard Matt’s powerful vocal performance and crisp guitar riffs are reminiscent of artists such as Paolo Nutini, The 1975 and Ed Sheeran. He is well-known and established as a covers and requests artist on the local music scene gaining a strong reputation as a talented performer impressing a growing audience of fans. Find Matt on Facebook: Matt on Facebook ON STAGE FROM AROUND 2.00PM

The Contacts provide a stunning set of musical entertainment, are an act not to be missed and are looking forward to entertaining you at Peterborough Beer Festival 2019. https://www.facebook.com/ thecontactssoulband/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 8:00PM

SATURDAY 24TH AUGUST EVENING The Contacts In just two years The Contacts have established themselves as a very popular Soul Band, not just in Peterborough, but nationwide! Luke Allport, Chris Dunn & Les Wheeler, formed the band with the idea of bringing a select mix of upbeat Motown & Northern Soul to audiences that really wanted to dance! They were soon joined by Rachel Mizon on vocals and Cam Logan on keyboards, all having played together in projects in one form or another. The band has gone from strength to strength regularly playing sold out gigs at all the popular music venues of Peterborough. In late 2018 the very talented Gemma McDowell joined the band as lead female vocalist when she returned to the UK. Gemma has rapidly become the star of the show, sharing the lead vocals with Luke, and injecting a real sparkle into the gigs. The band has a lively varied repertoire and you will know that the audience will be dancing along from the very first song. Listening carefully

Blurd 2019 marks the 25th Anniversary of the release of the seminal Blur album, Parklife which was to feature in the UK Albums Chart for a massive 90 weeks and came to define the emerging Britpop scene in 1994. What better way to celebrate this anniversary than to have the amazing Blurd closing this year’s Beer Festival. Blurd is the UK’s longestrunning and most authentic tribute to Britpop legends Blur. Together since 2006, Blurd has performed as far afield as the Dublin Academy and the Isle of Wight Festival. Their approach is simple; to sound like and to look like Blur, and thousands of music lovers, festival-goers, and fans of Blur testify that they do just that! The last few years have been manic for the band, headlining stages at the Isle of Wight Festival and London’s O2, appearing at festivals alongside acts such as The Farm, Inspiral Carpets, The Happy Mondays, Cast, Lightning Seeds, Primal Scream, The Charlatans and more, as well as frequenting many university events and being asked to appear in a BBC documentary and a film about the rise of Britpop! http://www.blurd.co.uk/ ON STAGE FROM AROUND 10.00PM PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2019

SIBA Beers ou will have noticed that on two of our bars (Bar 1 and Bar 4) the layout is somewhat different from previous years and there is a very good reason for this. The Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) Midlands Region will be holding their annual SIBA Champion Beer of the Midlands Area competition at Peterborough Beer Festival on Tuesday 20th August. The SIBA Beer Awards are run across eight geographical regions, with the champions from each region moving forwards to the National competition to be held at Beer X. The awards represent the very best beers from the UK’s SIBA brewers and are judged by fellow brewers and industry experts making these awards the “Brewers’ Choice” awards in the UK. Although the actual competition is not open to the public (it will take place before the festival opens to the public), all the competition beers WILL be available for visitors to the festival as soon as the competition winners are announced and the awards presentation takes place on the Main Stage at around 5:00 p.m.

The SIBA Midlands Region comprises Bucks, Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Northants, Notts, Oxfordshire, Staffs, Warwickshire and the West Midlands. There will be around 180 cask beers in the SIBA competition across a range of 10 categories from light beers to dark beers, IPA’s, PA’s and Bitters as well as strong beers and speciality beers. There will be only ONE cask of each competition beer so an early visit to the festival is strongly recommended. Just remember, all these beers are entered into the competition and are viewed by the brewers to represent the best that they have to offer in the hope of winning a prestigious SIBA award. The SIBA competition beers are in ADDITION to the festival beers that you are all familiar with and will enable us to showcase around 450 different cask beers at this year’s Peterborough Beer Festival. Cooper Demonstration e are fortunate once again to have a visit from T & R Theakston’s Master Cooper, Jonathan Manby on Tuesday. This Year he is accompanied by his apprentice Euan Findlay. T & R Theakston are one of the few British brewers who still employ a full-time cooper. Although their beers are no longer delivered in oak casks some of their beers are matured in the wood. Jonathan was trained by Master Brewer and cooper, Clive Hollis, and is one of the few remaining coopers in the country. Everyone who has watched Jonathan’s demonstration of his craft has enjoyed watching him create casks with tools that haven’t changed in centuries. If you didn’t catch it last year, then make sure that you do not miss the chance to observe and marvel at his skill in the north tent.

Chuck it in the Bucket he 42nd Peterborough Beer Festival is ready to welcome all of its many national and international visitors. With grateful thanks to the lasting friendship of the Festival Organising Committee and the local Branch of the RNLI (Lifeboats) the cry “chuck it in the bucket” will resound. Every year we raise, with your generous donations, between £7,000 and £9,000 to provide the Lifeboat Volunteer Crews with the very best equipment we can. Last year an amazing £7,388 was raised. With your help, this year, we aim to try to top the £8,000. “Where does this money go”? – is a very reasonable question. Well, you will all be aware that over the years we have raised enough to purchase 3 D Class, rigid inflatable, inshore lifeboats and one Atlantic Class, a larger rigid inflatable. These were aptly named Peterborough Beer Festival I, II, III and IV and were named and dedicated by proud members of the Beer Festival organising

T

committee. They have proved themselves over the years with exceptional service and have been invaluable to their crews. Since then, over the last few years we have assisted Wells Next to Sea Station in their successful bid for a new allweather Shannon Class Lifeboat. However, to house the new Shannon, a new Lifeboat Station is needed. It has taken a long time to obtain the necessary planning permission as the legal work relating to the new site has taken longer than expected. Wells has a wonderful coastline and you would expect it to be respected and nurtured for future generations. It is now hoped that building work can begin in September this year. This should take about 18 months to complete and the new Shannon will then come into service in late 2021 Back to this year – I look forward to meeting old friends and new. You can be assured that I will be suitable attired with my silly hat and asking for yet more donations. A big thank you to the Peterborough Branch of CAMRA for, once again, allowing us to wave our buckets for the Lifeboats and Crews. My very kind regards to you all. Gin Bar or something that has evolved from a medicinal drink in the middle ages, it ain’t half popular now! Back then it was given a bad name – being blamed for social problems, high death rates and disreputable bars and drunks. The epithet “mother’s ruin” is a common British name for gin, the origin of which is the subject of ongoing debate – those of you that haven’t seen ‘Beer Street’ and ‘Gin Lane’ - two prints issued in 1751 by English artist William Hogarth in support of what would become the Gin Act – please do look them up – they really are quite marvellous – they were designed to be viewed alongside each other - depicting the evils of the consumption of gin as a contrast to the merits of drinking beer!! And here we are now – in 2019 at Peterborough Beer Festival with a rather successful and returning gin bar – how GINcredible! Fenspirits are a family-run distillery from Wisbech who ferment and distill vodka from

sugar beet before re-distilling it into delicious gin - it’s very rare to see this as most gin producers buy in a base grain spirit and add botanicals. Each bottle is filled, corked and wax-sealed by hand. Look out for their Aurora Gin at the festival which is infused with flowers to make it blue, however, add tonic and it changes to pink! Roundwood Gin Distillery based near Huntingdon is run by Emily and Rupert. We will be showcasing their extra-small batch gin which contains juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, elderflower and elderberries. Lyme Bay are back this year – not only a familiar name on the Wine Bar – but on the Gin Bar too – we have their Dry gin (with lemongrass, orange peel and elderflower), the Pink Grapefruit, and a brand new one – Orange and Thyme. So pop along and have a chat with our GINius bar team who will be happy to recommend something GINcredible.

CIDER & PERRY BAR

Cider & Perry Bar elcome to the cider and perry bar. As always we have a wide range of traditionally made ciders and perries from all over the country, quite a few of them new to the Festival this time, but because of the popularity of cider containing fruit and other flavourings we also have a good selection of these. You will therefore find on the bar strawberry, pineapple, blackberry and other fruit ciders, also rhubarb, even rum & raisin and sloe gin. You will note that most of the fruit ciders are 4% ABV, considerably weaker than most of the non-fruit ciders. The majority of the ciders are still, although some will sparkle a little due to the residual fermentation in the tubs and boxes. Because of the nature of the fermentation process real ciders and perries may be crystal clear, hazy or even cloudy, but not so opaque as to make them look unappealing in the glass. We are also selling a range of non-alcoholic apple juices on the bar. These are 100% juice and very refreshing. Our knowledgeable bar staff will be very happy to give small tastes and discuss the drinks with you provided the bar is not too busy. For the second year we will be running a Cider / Perry of the Festival Competition. There will be three sections; traditional cider,

W

traditional perry and fruit cider. We will be looking for nominations; this will take place on Tuesday August 20th and anyone at the Festival can take part. The six in each category with the most nominations will be judged by tasting panels on Wednesday with the results announced on Wednesday afternoon. The tub labels are the best source of information when ordering since, unlike the program, they are only printed after the cider has been tasted. Green labels are cider and yellow labels are perry. Most ciders / perries are made from a blend of apple / pear varieties; where a single variety has been used this is on the tub label. All the ciders and perries have been categorized as Very Dry, Dry, Medium Dry, Medium, Medium Sweet, Sweet or Very Sweet. Bear in mind that on our categorization most commercial ciders would be medium sweet and a lot of fruit ciders sweet or very sweet! You may not always agree with us, particularly since some tubs can change in character as they are drunk, but it shouldn’t be too far off. We are confident that whatever your taste in cider / perry there is something for you here. Wassail! Chris Rogers Cider Bar Manager

THE ENGLISH WINE BAR

The English Wine Bar elcome to the 2019 Wine Bar. This year we are delighted to offer a selection of exclusively English wines from seven different vineyards. We will have a varied choice of white, Rose, red, and sparkling wines as well as the popular traditional Lyme Bay country wines. It is one of the best selections of English Wines you will find locally. We always like to have something new for our customers to try and this year we are pleased to have a selection of our local Mead from the Iceni Meadery produced here in Peterborough. We are very pleased to be back home in our preferred wine bar location- just

W

inside the South marquee as you come in on the end bar- and we are next to our Gin bar friends- so all those lovely people looking for a wine or gin you won’t have to walk too far to find one to enjoy. As with the beers we will not have all the wines in the programme available at all times but we aim to have a good selection. If you have any questions about the wines or are unsure what to choose just ask and our staff will do the best to help. Enjoy the festival and we hope to see you. Pamela Baines Wine Bar Manager

The PBF 2019 “Home Brew Off” he Peterborough Beer Festival Brewing Competition (PBFBC for short!) returned for another successful event in 2019. In a slightly different format to 2018 there were only 2 categories this year, under 4% and over 4%, with plenty of brewers entering both categories. Competitors were asked to produce a litre of beer to be judged in one of the abv categories. The prize for each winning brewer is to spend the day with a local brewery to produce a firkin of their beer to be put on the singles bar at PBF19. Again the standard of beer entered was extremely high with only a few points separating the top few places. Look out for the beers on the singles bar and the tasting notes in the festival guide! Thanks to Nene Valley Brewery and Nobby’s Brewery for giving the winners

T

the opportunity to brew with them, Tom at the Bumble Inn who allowed us to take over his place for the judging and to the local beer experts who gave their time to judge once again! The ‘PBFBC’ will return in 2020 with a new twist, keep an eye out folks! Hoppy Brewing! Mark Wroe

WINNERS: Under 4% Andy Donovan with his beer “A New England” @ 3.9% abv he has brewed his winning beer with Nene Valley Brewery of Oundle Over 4% Toby Mears with his beer “CG18” @ 6.2% abv - he has brewed his winning beer with Nobbys of Thrapston PETERBOROUGH BEER FESTIVAL 2019
