August 2021

People Pathways Welcome to the August edition of the One Nucleus People Pathways newsletter. I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. We have some exciting events on the horizon, including the upcoming BioWednesday webinar (featured on page 3) on the topic of work-placements and work-based learning. In a recent poll to our network we asked “What do you feel is the biggest barrier to increasing work-based learning opportunities in Life Sciences?”. Early votes are suggesting that ‘supervision capacity at the employer’ is the main barrier. Voting is still open and you can have your say here. We are here to help you recruit and grow great teams! As a One Nucleus member you can post vacancies on our website and we will feature them inside this newsletter. We are interested in learning about the trends of recruitment and more specifically the trends in staff turnover and the cause. Over the last 12 months have you noticed an increase in staff turnover? Vote now and stay tuned for findings in next month’s People Pathways newsletter. What’s inside this months issue? BioWednesday Webinar: Is the Workplace the Best Place to Train our Future Workforce? 16:00 - 17:00 Wednesday, 1 September 2021 Work-based learning opportunities offer many benefits to students and employers. The Life Sciences Industrial Strategy aims to ensure we have the best talent, skills and people to support the needs of the sector. As the sector continues to thrive and experiences convergence with new technologies, work-based learning programmes can help to meet the demands for new skills and experienced workers. Our panel will discuss how employers can offer work-based learning covering internships, placements and apprenticeships. The University of East Anglia is looking to develop strong relationships with organisations that can support a site visit for it’s BSc Pharmacology students. By designing something bespoke in connection with their course modules we want to highlight what options are available after Graduation. This provides an invaluable experience for these students and you in turn then have access to an excellent, well prepped student resource. The aim with this programme is to provide a ½ day site visit for students who want to work in the industry, rather than be Pharmacists. Surrounding Research & Development, this would ideally involve a tour, a presentation, Q&A’s, careers pathway seminar etc. To take place around Oct/Nov (1st semester) or Feb/March (2nd semester) but we can be flexible to work around commitments. The numbers of attendees will vary depending on which year group would be best suited and this would be confirmed through further discussion with you. Understandably there may not be scope for each year group to visit at once so this could be broken down into smaller groups. Ideally we would be looking to create a physical visit but if this is not possible we could explore a virtual offering. This option was trialled this year to great success alongside AstraZeneca & Quadram Institute. We designed a very engaging and informative virtual visit which was very well received with excellent comments from students and staff alike. We look forward to hearing from you, For more information please contact, Paul Chandler – p.chandler@uea.ac.uk
