RECYCLED CHRISTMAS TREES The municipality of Tayug gained attention recently because of its unique seasonal project - the Christmas trees made of recycled materials. Five recycled trees stand tall inside the Tayug National High School to symbolize peace and love during the holidays. As host of the Schools Division contest, the school administration thought of coming up with something worthwhile to show the visitors and students from other schools. The principal's order to come up with Christmas trees made of local and recycled materials was followed by heart. Thanks to the ingenuity of the advisers and students, colourful trees made of plastic water bottles, used baskets, dayami or dried rice stalks and coconut husks rose around the school compound. These were prepared by the Science, Filipino, Araling Panlipunan, TLE and Values Education departments since the first week of November. Just this week, the City of San Carlos displayed this same creativity at the Speaker Eugenio Perez National School. The trees were not just from recycled materials but were also designed to be tall and imposing. Student said the tress symbolize their high hopes and the endless possibilities to reach their goals in life. The trees may not be as shimmering and splendid as the commercial trees in malls but these surely deserve praises. Celebrating Christmas is one thing. Contributing to environment protection is another. Thus, combining both will make Santa and Mother Earth give their best smiles. There is no criteria provided for the winner of the best tree. The judgement will be based on the appreciation from onlookers and supporters. And what better gift to receive this Christmas than being appreciated for your good deeds not just by your school mates but also by multi- sectoral groups. Frank Cimatu, PDI - North Luzon Bureau
