A monthly club night run for and by adults with a learning disability - it’s a night to socialise in a cool, modern environment, hang out with friends and make some new ones too! For this Women’s Work edition our resident DJ’s Hannah & Tracy are joined by headliner Louise ‘Fifties’ O’ Donnell. Described by DJ Mag as ‘A Serious Talent’ Fifties is a DJ and designer hailing from Co.Antrim. She has played across the U.K. and Ireland from Lush at Kelly’s to Scotland’s Wickerman festival and received praise from both DJ Mag and iDJ Magazine. Her sets are full of funk and groove with one aim - to make you feel good! Expect jackin’ house, uplifting electro and brilliant bootlegs to exclusive, unique edits layered with cheeky acapellas. JUNE 5 BRANDED: THE STIGMA OF BEING AN OLDER FEMALE ARTIST IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. Aware of connotations in its own name, Over The Hill Music Collective will explore through a panel discussion the discrimination and difficulties as well as unspoken issues facing women in an ever-challenging music industry. This discussion will feature women talking openly about their own experiences; we will then open up the discussion to a Q&A from our audience for our panel. We strive to work towards providing a platform for older women who need to be at the centre of debates to discuss their own identities, their own lives and the policies governing them. JUNE 5 BANNER MAKING WORKSHOP
This year Women’s Work festival is in acknowledgment of the centenary year of the Representation of The People Act 1918. Our artwork which is by Belfast based Illustrator Fiona McDonnell incorporates the colours and tone of what became a milestone event in the fight for democratic equality, which is still being fought today around the world in different forms. On Sunday 10th of June, women* and girls in Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London will walk together as part of a celebratory mass participation artwork. Inspired by the beautiful handmade banners of the Suffragists and Suffragettes, the coordinators at Artichoke are encouraging everyone to create their own banners and flags for PROCESSIONS on Sunday 10th June. In preparation for the PROCESSION, Oh Yeah is hosting a fully facilitated early evening banner making workshop a few days before. We are encouraging local creative and music community to get involved. *Those who identify as women or non-binary

JUNE 6 CAREER STEER: TOUR MANAGEMENT WITH EMMA EDGAR
Originally from Carnmoney, Emma moved to England at the age of 18 to pursue a career in music. She worked at the UK’s largest independent concert promoter, SJM Concerts for 13 years in the production department, advancing hundreds of tours a year and production managing festivals and live events. She left SJM 5 years ago and began touring full time and since then has travelled all over the world - USA, China, Russia, Australia, Japan, UK and Europe. She has tour managed huge bands including Placebo, Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), Everything Everything and currently is tour manager for Wolf Alice.
Winner of the Total Production Magazine’s tour manager of the year in 2015 and also the Live Awards TM of the year in 2017 Emma is ‘making it happen’ on a global scale and we are thrilled to welcome her back to Belfast as part of Women’s Work to deliver a workshop on the fundamentals of tour management, how to gain tour management opportunities and what a career in tour management truly entails, one rock and roll story at a time. JUNE 6 THE ROOFTOP SESSIONS: BRIGID MAE POWER Brigid Mae Power is an Irish singer-songwriter and multiinstrumentalist who paints her songs in dreamily expansive strokes, transporting earthly compositions into universal and exultant realms. Power’s songs explore themes of transformation, change, motherhood, acceptance, strength, courage and trust. Her second album ‘The Two Worlds’ is masterful collection of effortless, affecting folk, and an album that furthers the songwriter and multiinstrumentalist’s already stellar reputation.

JUNE 6 A NIGHT WITH WOOKALILY Noir folk sirens play music from their forthcoming album entitled ‘Everything is Normal, Except the Little Things Inside My Head’ and premier a short horror film featuring their score.
The album was recorded on glorious analogue equipment at Analogue Catalogue Vintage Recording Studio by award-winning producer Julie McLarnon, Lankum (Rough Trade, 2017), Yorkston/Thorne/Khan (Domino Records, 2017). It is a grown-up, monochrome, gently melancholy successor to 2015’s technicolour and tiggerishly playful All the Waiting While – the debut album. In a night comprising short film, original score, B-Movie soundtrack DJ sets and live performance prepare to be spooked and enchanted

JUNE 7 HERE TO BE HEARD: THE STORY OF THE SLITS In Association with Belfast Film Festival and Girls Rock School NI
Here To Be Heard: The Story Of The Slits is a new documentary film about the first all-girl Punk group, The Slits. Directed by William E Badgley (‘Kill All Redneck Pricks’). Contemporaries of The Clash and Sex Pistols and the godmothers of the musical movement known as ‘Punky Reggae’, the film tells the story of the young women pioneers of the mid-70’s Punk era from a female point of view and runs from the inception of the group in 1976 to its end in 2010 (coinciding with the death of lead vocalist, Ari Up). Includes interviews and previously unseen footage and band recordings.

Sóley’s solo career is based on a finely-tuned feel for atmosphere. Her aptly titled new album Endless Summer is vivid, bright, and resplendent. JUNE 7 THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES To recognise the centenary of the Representation of the People Act, we are inviting five prominent female politicians to talk us through their chosen eight tracks, a book and a luxury item they would take to a desert island. This special event is an unusual twist on a much-loved format where our female legislators including Naomi Long, Claire Hanna, Carál Ní Chuilín, Clare Bailey and Paula Bradley, reveal which musical memories mean the most to them.
The event will be hosted by BBC’s Marie-Louise Muir - Northern Ireland’s best known Arts champion and broadcaster. This is sure to be more entertaining than any other political panel show! This is a fully seated event and tickets are strictly limited.

JUNE 8 SUFFRAGETTE FOR SOUND WITH ANALOGUE CATALOGUE, DELIA DERBYSHIRE DAY & GIRL DJ Julie McLarnon (Analogue Catalogue) will be joined by Caro C, an electronic composer, producer and instigator of Delia Derbyshire Day, a charitable organisation advancing the art and education of electronic music via the works and archive of the late electronic music pioneer Delia Derbyshire (1937-2001). DD Day produces original arts heritage events, commissions new art and offers electronic music education centred around the Delia Derbyshire Archive which is held at John Rylands Library in Manchester, UK.

A workshop on the fundamentals of composition, arrangement and midi mock-ups - strictly limited and suited to those interested in pursuing a career in writing for film, TV and advertising. Women’s Work are thrilled to welcome Charlotte Hatherley back to Belfast to facilitate this workshop. Film producer Susan Breen helped develop films starring actors such as Cate Blanchett, Carey Mulligan and Michael Fassbender. Most recently, Susan has produced 6-part primetime drama series Requiem for BBC1 and Netflix.
Fionola Meredith has worked for Time.com, the Guardian, the Observer, Village magazine and RTE radio and television. Fionola is a frequent presence on BBC Northern Ireland current affairs and discussion programmes, debating the moral, social and political issues of the day. FairPlé formed in 2018 with a mission to achieve gender balance in the production, performance, promotion and development of Irish traditional and folk music. Spearheaded by internationally renowned singer, Karan Casey, FairPlé is made up of a core of some of the best musicians and singers from the genre, including Úna Monaghan, Pauline Scanlon and Niamh Dunne. June 9th is FairPlé Day, a grassroots, global day of action, which will see sessions and gigs run across Ireland and beyond to raise awareness of the underrepresentation of women in Irish traditional and folk music and to celebrate women’s contribution to the tradition.

In Belfast, FairPlé will be taking over The American Bar for an afternoon session (5pm) and an evening concert (8pm). The session is aimed particularly at people who have little session experience and those who haven’t played for years and would like to pick up their instrument again. The session is open to everyone, irrespective of gender. The concert line-up will be announced closer to the date. Presenting Luna Abu Nassar, singer songwriter, touring with her new album titled “Dawame” (“Whirlpool” in English). Singing in Arabic and Hebrew, folk, electronics and other influences range from Fairuz to Bjork. Luna also works on social projects at the Arab – Jewish Community center in Jaffa and with Israeli\ Palestinian youth through music, and has been an active member of the multi language hip hop band System Ali for several years.

As part of ongoing series in collaboration with Belfast Film Festival we are delighted to present; Patti Smith Onscreen. Patti Smith is an American singer-songwriter, poet, author, and visual artist who became an influential component of the New York punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses. This event pays tribute to the great ‘punk poet laureate’ on screen, in concert and interviewed over a career that has spanned almost 50 years. The evening will feature film footage of Smith in concert performing such well known songs as Gloria, Because the Night, Redondo Beach, Piss Factory and more.

JUNE 5-10 FEM-ANARCHY IN NI.
Launch of the female punk story. A new addition to the NI Music Exhibition at Oh Yeah. Following a call out to the punkettes of the late 70’s, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of some of the big moments in the local punk story, Oh Yeah will reveal a selection of stories, memorabilia, photos and more at this special exhibition. Our understanding of the London punk scene has recently been revised by the autobiography of Slits guitarist Viv Albertine and will be furthered by an upcoming film documentary on Poly Styrene (Marianne Joan Elliott-Said) from X Ray Spex. This is the time to do justice to these stories and we want to celebrate the courage and creativity of the visionaries who looked to create a new society in Northern Ireland during turbulent and often oppressive times.

JUNE 7 LATE NIGHT ART Late Night Art Belfast happens on the first Thursday of every month with over a dozen galleries opening their doors for an evening celebration of the vibrant visual arts scene in Belfast. During Women’s Work, the Black Box will launch an exhibition by Rebecca McBride; illustrator, painter and designer. The exhibition will run until the 6th July
