Common Core Learning Standards & Assessments - ELA

Strategies for Reading Literature Description: In this workshop you will learn which reading strategies have the most impact in meeting the Reading Literature Standards of the CCSS. As teachers we need to have a knowledge of what strategies work best with each reader, text, and experience. Since students come to school with varying degrees of background knowledge and at different reading levels, it helps to have several strategies to draw upon in meeting their unique needs. After attending this workshop, teachers will leave with concrete ideas for what strategies to teach, how to teach them, and ideas for matching our strategy instruction to the readers in front of us. The whole class interactive read-aloud is the staple of the K-2 modules. The rich texts do provide the fodder for high level comprehension. However, the follow-up activities are as important as the read-aloud. The workshop will focus on both whole class and small group techniques that we can use to tailor our classroom instruction to meet the Standards and children's developmental needs. Dr. Stahl will also address the special needs of English Learners and children who are language reticent or have language-processing issues. This workshop is a must for the early childhood teacher who wants to add spice and vitality to increase the power of teacher read-alouds.
