Common Core Learning Standards & Assessments - ELA

The 10 Most Effective Strategies for Reading Informational Texts in the Upper Grades Description: We know what the standards require for reading informational texts, but it can be challenging to figure out what strategies help students most. In this workshop we will learn the 10 most effective strategies that students can use when reading information. These strategies can be applied to reading in social studies, in science, and any research reading context. Teachers will leave this session with concrete ideas for what strategies to teach, how to teach them, and ideas for great nonfiction books to use. Materials: Bring 2-3 informational books or articles. The authentic texts being used to support CCSS are classics that are engaging to students. However, we need to balance the tension between ensuring understanding and wringing a text dry of its aesthetic appeal. Kay will share research-validated techniques that breathe life and joy into the rich texts recommended for our students while simultaneously enhancing comprehension. By the end of this session, you will remember why you chose to become a teacher.
