Each year, thousands of people take SWBOCES courses to enrich their careers and their lives. Many students are embarking on new careers or gaining job skills; others are improving their English or preparing for their High School Equivalency Exam. All of our students have a common goal-a brighter future for themselves and their families. We’re offering courses in demand areas like Licensed Practical Nursing, Medical Assistant, Certified Nurse Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy & EKG Technician, Cosmetology, and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. FULL-TIME DAY PROGRAM

Intensive, adult training day program in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating. Designed as a preapprenticeship or mechanic training, students successfully completing the program will be equipped to enter the field at the apprentice level. Instruction includes: Introduction to refrigeration and A/C theory; identification and function of electrical components, controls, valves, compressors and evaporators; system assembly, trouble shooting, part repair and replacement; air handlers, A/C systems & ice machines; heating systems theory & installation (gas & oil fired); boiler installation and repair; oil burner, heating systems & troubleshooting, repair & installation. The minimum tested reading level necessary to enroll in this training course is 7.0. Eye Safety Goggles, Textbooks, EPA Approved Refrigerant Transition & Recovery Certification Exam (Core, I, II, III & Universal), Supplies, and Tool Kit Included. REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING 1

Air Conditioning & Refrigeration mechanics and helpers are in demand! Get an introduction to refrigeration and air conditioning theory, including all aspects of the refrigeration and air conditioning cycle, how it works and the types of refrigerants and their uses. The textbook included is also used for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning 2.

REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING 2

Prerequisite: Refrigeration & Air Conditioning 1. Continue your training by learning basic electrical theory including low and high voltage circuits and electrical controls (starters, time clocks, contactors, thermostats, TXV’s, dryers and relays).

REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING 3

Prerequisite: Refrigeration & Air Conditioning 2. Build a working refrigeration system with all electrical components and a low voltage A/C circuit board. This hands-on-training includes pipe and tubing assembly, plus instruction in cutting, flaring and soldering copper tubing. Eye Safety Goggles Included.

REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING 4

Prerequisite: Refrigeration & Air Conditioning 3. Finish the AC & Refrigeration course series with air handlers, air conditioning systems and ice machines, with hands-on experience and special topics in refrigeration and air conditioning for advanced students. Eye Safety Goggles Included.

REFRIGERANT TRANSITION & RECOVERY CERTIFICATION

HVACR mechanics, prepare to be certified in the skills for recovering and recycling refrigerants. This course includes the EPA Approved Certification Exam (Core, I, II, III & Universal). If students do not pass the initial exam, they may retest for an added fee of $50 when next offered. Textbook and test fee included.

HEATING SYSTEMS AND OIL BURNER TROUBLESHOOTING AND REPAIR

This course includes instruction on basic systems, electrical requirements, simple controls, installation applications and burner capacities. Water, Steam and Hydro Air are the most common residential heating systems in use today. Gain an understanding of system components and how they work. Learn to troubleshoot common system problems. Develop your skills and acquire the techniques necessary to maintain heating systems at peak performance and efficiency. Eye Safety Goggles Included. Textbook required.

*AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNICIAN

Want a career that’s always in demand? Become an automotive service technician. Dealers and private shops are seeking qualified entry-level people. Learn the basic systems and move on to maintenance, troubleshooting and repair. You will practice your skills in our fully equipped shop with our professional mechanic/instructor. Training includes shop safety, using lifts and shop equipment, diagnostics, lubrication service, brake, exhaust, suspension & steering, electrical and cooling systems and engine “tune up� service. BASIC AUTO MECHANICS

Get your motor running with this introductory course using the tools of the trade. Learn shop and lift safety plus systems operation and basic maintenance procedures for lubrication, tires and wheels, cooling, suspension and exhaust systems from our professional mechanic/instructor. Move on to the fundamentals of brakes, charging and ignition systems. Eye Safety Goggles Included.

AUTO MECHANICS 2

Prerequisite: Basic Auto Mechanics. Started with Basic Auto Mechanics? Now continue at an intermediate level. Lifts, air tools, tire machines, Scan tools, and more. Use the tools of our fully equipped shop in an intermediate course covering diagnosis and repair of brake systems, charging and starting systems, cooling systems, electronic engine components, scan-tool use, wire diagrams, and basic air conditioner theory. AUTO BODY REPAIR

Fender-bender to major collision damage, the art of auto body repair is a high demand skill. Learn the fundamentals of auto body repair from an expert, including safety, tools, repair methods, paint stripping, sanding, single- and two-stage paint processes and polishing. Prerequisite: Knowledge of basic computer operations and Windows. Ask any Architect, Engineer or drafting/design professional, AutoCAD is the industry standard in computer assisted design programs. Get introduced to the essential concepts, commands and tools necessary to design projects. Drafting or blueprint reading experience suggested. Limit 12 students.

COMPUTERS FOR ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Reach for the power of the information age. Learn how to use a personal computer in easy-to-understand language, at a casual pace. Become comfortable at using the mouse to navigate the desktop. In addition to learning the basics about hardware and software, you will create simple letters and documents using MS Word and Windows. MICROSOFT OFFICE MODULAR PROGRAM

Prerequisite: Knowledge of Windows. Explore Microsoft Office, the most widely used software suite integrating word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database applications. Discover the power of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. TAKE ONE MODULE OR ALL FOUR. Limit 12 Students.

QUICKBOOKS PRO

This course introduces the fastest and easiest way to manage a small business. Students will learn how QuickBooks Pro maintains account receivables and account payables, tracks inventory, prepares payroll and so much more. Students will learn how to integrate financial statements and produce multiple reports. Limit 10 Students.

QUICKBOOKS PRO - INTERMEDIATE

Prerequisite: CIT0106 QuickBooks Pro- Basic or QuickBooks Experience is a must! This course picks up where course CIT0106 leaves off. Topics to be covered include: setting up employees, creating purchase orders, setting lists to track specific revenue, payable accounts and to creating reports and export them to Excel for creating advanced spreadsheets. Standard accounting transactions will be reviewed to create invoices, apply cash, issue purchase orders, write checks and issue. Limit 10 Students.

SOCIAL MEDIA FOR BEGINNERS

The social web is a confusing place, and if you are looking to dive into the world of social networking this is the course for you. We will explore common social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and You-Tube. We will discuss the dangers and benefits of belonging to these thriving online communities. Limit 10 Students.

CARPENTRY 1

Develop basic carpentry skills using hand and power tools. Create class projects that require selection of lumber and other materials. Design and build basic projects in class. Eye Safety Goggles Included.

CARPENTRY 2

Swing a hammer and learn the basic principles of construction framing for new houses or home alterations. Acquire the skills to build stud walls, create window and door openings, cut roof joists and rafters, sheathing and stair stringers.

READING BLUEPRINTS & PLANS

Are you working in the construction trades? Here’s a “must have� course! Be able to read, understand, and locate required information from a set of standard residential or light commercial plans. Topics include terminology, scaling, floor and foundation plans, elevation, wall sections, site plans, structural framing and mechanical plans. Textbook included. Same textbook is used in Construction Estimating.

CONSTRUCTION ESTIMATING

In business to make money? Then you need to accurately estimate labor, material and overhead costs, determine profit margins and evaluate market conditions, which can affect the contract price. This course includes an explanation of how to determine material quantities, increase estimating efficiency, prepare written estimates for clients, and accurately track estimated and actual job costs for residential and light commercial construction. Same textbook is used in Reading Blueprints and Plans.

DIY - HOME MAINTENANCE

Here’s a course to get you started on all of those DIY (do-it-yourself ) home maintenance and improvement projects while saving money. Learn how to change a faucet, repair or replace a toilet or even solder copper pipe. Take the mystery out of repairing simple electrical switches or outlets. Find out how to deal with damaged sheetrock, install vinyl or ceramic tile, and complete basic carpentry framing. DIY-Home maintenance is a hand’s on course that will teach you the proper safe use of hand and power tools. This course will pay for itself ! Eye Safety Goggles Included.

*COSMETOLOGY LICENSING PROGRAM

Prerequisite: TABE score of 7.4 or above. This program prepares students for a career in the creative field of Cosmetology. The course fulfills the New York State 1,000 hour requirement necessary to qualify for the New York State licensing examination. Modules of instruction consist of all phases of Cosmetology including a salon clinic as well as State Board preparation. Textbook & Kit Fees Included. Any additional fees are the students’ responsibility, such as additional supplies and the respective New York State licensing exam. NYS TEACHING ASSISTANT PREPARATION

Teaching Assistants are in demand in many local school districts. Start your career in education as a teaching assistant. This course will prepare students in reading, writing, math and instructional support, the four categories on the NY State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills (NYSATAS). Anyone seeking certification as a teaching assistant since February 2, 2004 will be required to achieve a qualifying score on the NYSATAS exam. This workshop is designed to prepare qualified applicants for the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) Entry Level Exam. The exam is open to anyone who has taken a NABCEP approved course either through Southern Westchester BOCES or any other institution. The class will review the NABCEP Entry Level Exam of PV systems and the ten learning objectives on which the exam is based. Those who pass the exam demonstrate a basic understanding of photovoltaic systems suitable for a supervised, entry-level position with a dealer/installer or other PV industry company. Passing the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners (NABCEP) PV Entry Level Knowledge Exam will demonstrate your knowledge and may help improve your success in the PV job market. Adult Education Office Hours: Monday through Thursday, 8:00am-9:00pm; Friday, 8:00-3:30pm Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to take Adult Education & Continuing Ed Courses. Payment: Tuition (includes the cost of course materials except as noted) and the registration fee is payable upon registration. You will receive a receipt and be notified only if a class is canceled. ATTIRE/CONDUCT: Some courses require appropriate attire for safety. Please check with your instructor. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a mature manner. Inappropriate and/or illegal behavior or failure to follow staff directions is not acceptable and will result in disciplinary or legal action. CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION: SWBOCES Adult Education Department will award a Certificate of Completion to students who have maintained at least 80% attendance and have shown successful completion in the skills and aptitudes necessary for course completion as determined by a passing grade from the instructor. Completion of certificate requirements may differ for licensing programs and comprehensive accelerated programs. Duplicate Certificate Fee is $15. CLASS SCHEDULE: All class schedules are subject to change due to weather, availability of instructor and enrollment. SWBOCES makes every effort to schedule classes to meet the needs of our students. Please verify the schedule and location for your classes with the Adult Education Office. CONFIRMATIONS: You may assume your registration is accepted unless otherwise notified. When you provide an e-mail address, an automatic reminder will be sent to your e-mail seven days prior to the start of your class. You will be notified if your class has been cancelled. COURSE CANCELLATIONS/CHANGES: If SWBOCES cancels a course prior to the start date, 100% tuition and registration fee are refunded. Your registration acknowledges our course refund/cancellation policy, SWBOCES reserves the right to cancel or make changes in course offerings, locations, instructors, and times when necessary. DAMAGE TO OR LOSS OF PERSONAL PROPERTY OR INJURY ON SWBOCES PREMISES OR OFF-SITE: SWBOCES does not assume any responsibility, either real or implied, for the personal property of any adult occupational student or injury of any student. It is suggested that students review their own insurance coverage. DISCLAIMER: We retain our instructors to teach courses in their areas of expertise. Instructors are not permitted to use the classroom for personal gain, or to solicit clients or customers. SWBOCES is not responsible for any advice or consultation given beyond the classroom setting and course curriculum materials. SWBOCES is not responsible for typographical errors. OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS/EDUCATIONAL RECORDS: Students may request an official letter or transcript of their grades or other student records by writing to the Adult Education registration office and enclosing a money order of $20 payable to Southern Westchester BOCES. PARTIAL PAYMENT PLANS AVAILABLE: For your convenience we offer a payment plan for any class over $1,000. A service and administrative fee of $75 will be applied for all approved partial payment plans to full tuition payments regardless of course completion. Note: Failure to pay the appropriate tuition by the due date may result in dismissal from the program. PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES: Our campus is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify us at the time of registration to discuss your individual requirements. REFUND POLICY - Please read carefully! Full Refund: If termination of enrollment occurs prior to the first day of class, no tuition liability will be incurred-less a $100 withdrawal fee. Partial Refund: If a student withdraws after the first class and 24 hours prior to the second class, 75% of the tuition, less a $100 withdrawal fee, and textbook charge will be given. No Refund: There will be no refunds granted after the second day to program end. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS REFUND POLICY AND ITS PROCESS. Refunds, other than charge cards, will take at least 4-6 weeks. RETURNED CHECKS Any fees incurred are the student’s responsibility. A $25 fee will be charged on returned checks. SCHOOL CLOSINGS: All evening classes will be cancelled when Southern Westchester BOCES is closed. Weather/Emergency cancellations will be broadcast on local radio and TV. Visit our website at www.swboces.org/adulteducation to check on school closings. SECURITY/PERSONAL SAFETY/PARKING: Appropriate safety standards are adhered to in all classes and labs. All students are required to sign off on the Southern Westchester BOCES Code of Conduct on the first night of class. Students are required to provide personal protection equipment items such as goggles and aprons. Students are required to maintain appropriate business and professional behavior while on SWBOCES property. Prohibited behavior includes abusive behavior and language, violence, alcohol on breath or drug use, and sexual harassment, among other behaviors. Disregard for these prohibitions may warrant removal from the program. Refund policy does not apply. Students must park in designated areas. Students are subject to towing at owner’s expense, if they are parked in non-approved spaces. SENIOR CITIZEN DISCOUNT: Senior citizens (62 years or over) are eligible for a 10% discount. Documentation is required (i.e. driver’s license, leisure pass, copy of birth certificate). This does not apply to tuitions over $1,000. SMOKING: In response to various laws, Southern Westchester BOCES has adopted a Smoke-Free Environment Policy. This policy prohibits smoking at all times in any Southern Westchester BOCES facility, on the grounds of all facilities and in Southern Westchester BOCES vehicles. TITLE IX AND SECTION 504: Southern Westchester BOCES is committed to equal opportunities in employment and education. Vocational education programs and activities are offered without regard to sex, race, color, national origin or disability. The District official responsible for the coordination of activities relating to compliance with Title IX is the Director of Human Resources. This official will provide information, including complaint procedures, to any student or employee who feels that his/her rights under Title IX may have been violated by the district or its officials. Students or employees who feel that their rights may have been violated under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 by the district or its officials should direct inquiries or complaints to the Director of Facilities and Operations. Students who require instructional accommodations are requested to contact a Vocational Advisor as soon as possible, but not less than 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester. Southern Westchester BOCES needs a minimum of 30 days to arrange for reasonable accommodations if so required.
