Preparing for a safe summer By MC2 Jeff S. Troutman Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe s Memorial Get ready for Day weekyour summer end approaches, trip the Naval Support See page 6 Activity (NSA) Naples community is ringing in the summer season by emphasizing the need to stay safe and educating personnel on dangers associated with the months ahead. Part of the awareness campaign will focus on a series of summer safety stand down meetings, which began May 16 and will conclude May 24. “The recreational component – outdoor activities – is where we begin to see injuries or hazards associated with the summer months,” said Linda Christensen, NSA Naples safety manager. “It’s important that we identify these concerns and evaluate things brought to the attention of the Safety Office.” Some of the common injuries Christensen said the community sees during the warmer months are those relating to a person’s physical limitations, which can prove disastrous if proper planning and knowledge of one’s limitations are not exercised. “We as a community are privileged to live in a country that is beautiful and worth exploring, and knowing your physical limitations in the summer months is inherent to enjoying your time in Italy,” said Christensen. “For instance, if you’re going hiking or playing tennis, know what your physical limitations are. If you’re taking a trip in your car after a long week at work, make sure you’re well rested for the drive ahead. Just like you’d want your vehicle to be well-maintained for the drive, you need to make sure that you as a person are wellmaintained for that drive.” Chief Air Traffic Controlman (AW) Patrick Mick, the NSA Naples drug and alcohol programs advisor, advises that the warm, beautiful summers Italy provides are reason enough to participate in outdoor activities and partake in celebration. However, when alcohol factors into that celebration, a plan for responsibility needs to be in place, he advised. “The summer months tend to see more involvement with alcohol because the hours of daylight are longer, the weather is nicer, and people like to be outdoors enjoying themselves,” said Mick.

he police and military personnel who ran in Sunday’s Park to Park race might not all serve the same country, or even on the same continent. Still, they came together for a 10K race in Naples just the same. The Park to Park 10K event in Naples May 13 brought together an international coalition of police, civil servants and military service members to compete for the third annual Italian-American Interforces Trophy (Trofeo Interforze ItaloAmericano). Members of the U.S. and NATO military community in Naples took part, as did members of the Italian armed forces and a five-person coalition from the New York Police Department. More than 1,000 athletes participated in all, with runners representing the Italian Army, the Guardia di Finanza, the Carabinieri and countless other agencies from throughout Campania. The race

began at on the Naples waterfront road of Via Caracciolo and finished at the Villa Comunale, the city’s waterfront park. "We were just so honored to be invited, we couldn’t resist the offer,” said Deputy Inspector Michele Irizarry, a member of the New York Police Department (NYPD) running club. Ultimately, the ItalianAmerican Interforces Trophy went to a team from the Polizia Penitenziaria, the agency of Italian corrections officers. In the future, the NYPD group is working to organize a similar running event in New York City that Italian police and service members will be invited to attend. “The partnership is a good feeling,” said NYPD Capt. Michael Vanchieri. “We realize we have a lot of common goals, one of them being running.” Consul General Donald Moore, who heads the U.S. Consulate in Naples, also ran in the race, wearing a NYPD hat throughout. “This is another chance to reinforce and solidify the rela-

Captain’s Corner

Base Notes

By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

USPS no longer ships lithium batteries (iPads, cameras, etc.)

It was great to see many of you at the town hall meeting Tuesday night. If you missed it, we’ll get a wrapup out to you in an upcoming Panorama. We’re planning to have a Parco Eva town hall at the playground on Parco Eva Monday, May 21 at 6:30 p.m. There are some important issues to discuss about the future of Parco Eva, so please come out to that event if you are a resident. Many of you have taken advantage of the safety stand downs facilitated by the Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Safety Officer this week. Discussing summer safety is one of the most important things leaders can do to prevent many of the recurring accidents and injuries that occur during the “101 days of summer.” Every summer we lose service members because people make bad decisions. It’s important to take some time to remind everyone to consider the risks of summer activities and apply good common sense and risk management principles. This week, I told my sailors about a time my 15-year-old nephew and I were on my garage roof in Virginia a few years ago, trying to saw off a tree branch. It seemed simple and easy from the ground, but up there on the steep roof, holding a saw high over my head, I heard my nephew say, “Should we really be doing this?” I stopped. No, I realized, we should not. I had been so focused on getting the task completed that I had ignored the risks inherent in what we were doing. It was not worth the risk of one of us falling and breaking our necks when I could find a safer way of cutting down the branch. We climbed down and I called a professional to do the job safely. That day, it was my teenage nephew who was the voice of reason in an unsafe situation. What is the point of this story? It doesn’t matter whether you are an E-1 or an O-10, a 60-year-old or a 16-year-old, a sailor or a civilian – anyone can be a voice of reason, and that person might just save a life this summer. Summer is also Permanent Change of Station season, known as the time when we welcome a few thousand newcomers to Naples. Sponsors, remember to do right by your incoming personnel and arrange for their temporary lodging reservations (hint: call early). There are a lot of things to know about living here, which is why every two weeks we have Area Orientation. This is required, even for reservists. Please attend. We receive lots of positive feedback on the program and make an extra effort to walk everyone through the steps of getting established in Naples. Additionally, the NSA Naples ombudsman has initiated monthly meetings of a group similar to a Family Readiness Group. The meetings are called “Transitioning in Naples Training” and will take place on the first Thursday of every month beginning June 7. This is aimed specifically at spouses and will be hosted by Heather Staib-Jerzy. I hope this meeting will fulfill a need. I’m always open to hearing other ideas on how to keep our community informed. Don’t miss the Navy Exchange and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Customer Appreciation Weekend going on all day tomorrow and Sunday. There are a lot of prizes and fun things planned, and I think some great deals at both the Navy Exchange and Commissary. Today a number of commands are battling it out at Carney Park for the trophy in the Armed Forces Olympics. Next week we welcome Suze Orman, and then it’s Memorial Day weekend. If you haven’t gone up to Nettuno for the Memorial Day ceremony at the cemetery there, that is certainly a trip not to miss. Generally there are a lot of things going on to keep you busy, so get outside, enjoy the weather, see some of Naples and the rest of Europe, and have a wonderful summer!

Due to international aviation regulations, the U.S. Postal Service will no longer be able to mail packages containing lithium batteries or electronic devices with lithium batteries to international destinations. Mother's Day may not be an official church or U.S. federal holiday, but you wouldn’t know it at Agape Fellowship Ministries in Gricignano, Italy. The church, which is frequented by many members of the Naples military community, has a praise team that consists of all ladies. This Sunday, the women were able to sit back and relax as the church’s International Men's Praise Team took the stage to perform a set of musical selections. The praise team consists of men from various states in the United States as well as Ghana and Nigeria. After Sunday's service, the men of the church presented all of the mothers with a red rose to symbolize the love and respect for all that

Residents of Lazio town have gene for longevity Campodimele is a small town located in the province of Latina in the Lazio region. Called “the village of longevity,” this village is unique for the long life of its residents, who live in a peaceful countryside breathing clean, fresh air and drinking water from the local spring. Researchers worldwide have carried out many studies to understand the reasons for Campodimele residents’ long life expectancy. Last week, researchers from Rome’s La Sapienza University identified a gene that may hold the secret. The researchers conducted a clinical and genetic screening on the inhabitants that showed low levels of cholesterol as well as a mutation in the gene that synthesizes a protein called Angptl3. This gene helps to eliminate fat in the blood, providing a sort of protection from ischemic heart diseases related to atherosclerosis and diabetes. Campodimele is less than two hours drive from Naples. The old center of the town with its small streets is full of medieval history, as well as Arab influence due to the presence of the Saracens during the 9th and the 10th centuries. The landscape around the village consists of green fields with olive trees and dense woods with mineral spring water. Visit the town and you can try the residents’ healthy diet of beans, pasta fresh vegetables, dried fruit and cheese. You just may learn the secret to a longer life — something well worth checking out on a weekend.

Maradona, Italian government continue to fight over taxes Soccer legend Diego Armando Maradona has had a long dispute over alleged unpaid taxes with the Agenzia delle Entrate, the Italian internal revenue agency. According to the Agency, he owes about €40 million in allegedly unpaid taxes from sponsorship and merchandising deals he made when he played for Naples between 1984 and 1991. The Italian tax authorities rejected an offer by Maradona to pay €3.5 million to end the dispute. Afterward, his lawyer

announced that Maradona will sue the Italian state for €50 million in damages. Maradona’s lawyer said the athlete has been “persecuted” for years by the tax agency office for no reason, and the dispute has taken a toll on his image, his dignity, and his quality of life. In January 2010, Maradona’s diamond earring was sold for €25,000 at an auction, and the money went to paying part of his tax debt with the Italian tax agency. The earring was confiscated when Maradona visited a northern Italy health spa.

Thieves steal €10 million in jewels

In Milan, thieves robbed €10 million in jewels from the car of the wife of the famous high-end jewelry family Buccellati. She was returning home from a trade when her car was rammed from behind. As she stopped a man opened the back door and grabbed the case containing the jewellery while his accomplice distracted the woman. Buccellati Jewelry Company was founded in Milan in 1919.

Take care of yourselves, and each other, so everyone can enjoy themselves during the summer months.” The NSA Naples command recently went without an alcohol-related incident for an impressive fourmonth period, something the community leadership hopes will extend into the summer as outdoor activities reach their peak. “Shipmates helping other shipmates can be unilateral in helping each other so that not all of the responsibility of safety-awareness falls on the chain of command,” said Christensen. “This community has a very good track record when it comes to looking out for one another, and if that trend continues throughout the summer season, the NSA Naples community will continue to be a great place to live, work, and have fun.” For more information about summer safety in the

NSA Naples community, please visit http://www. cnic.navy.mil/Naples/OperationsAndManagement/ Safety/index.htm.

Energy conservation Make the drops to watts connection From the Environmental Protection Agency Many Americans know about the importance of saving energy, and many know about the importance of saving water, but few know the direct connection between saving both. We turn on the bathroom lights and the shower without realizing how closely related water and electricity are to each other. The truth is, vast amounts of energy are used to pump, treat, deliver and heat our nation’s water. Approximately 4 percent of the nation’s electricity consumption is used moving or treating water and wastewater. Considerable amounts of energy also go to heat water for bathing, shaving, cooking, and cleaning our homes, dishes, and clothes. In homes with electric water heaters, one-quarter of the households’ electricity is used to heat water. Given how closely related saving water is to sav-

ing energy, one of the best ways to save energy across the country and in our own homes is to use water more efficiently. One of the simplest ways to save both water and energy is to install water-efficient plumbing fixtures. Installing WaterSense labeled faucet aerators in your bathrooms, for example, costs just a few dollars but could save you enough electricity to dry your hair every day for a year! You can be sure these products will not only save resources, but they will perform to your expectations. WaterSense labeled products must achieve independent, third-party testing and certification to prove they meet EPA’s rigorous criteria for both efficiency and performance before they can earn the label. ervice members and their families stationed at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples can reduce the risk of traveling throughout Europe this summer by visiting some online systems and filling out important forms before leaving the country. There are several risk-reducing systems that have been put in place by the Department of Defense (DoD) to keep sailors and their families’ safe, including the Travel Risk Planning System (TRIPS) and the Navy Family Assessment and Accountability System (NFAAS). “One of the most important travel tools available to families or single sailors is TRIPS,” said Linda Christensen, the NSA Naples safety manager. “It’s almost like using Google Maps, but it includes precautions to make the journey safer.” Some things TRIPS will tell you are whether you are leaving too late at night, or whether the roads you plan on taking are currently under construction. FFSC Tip of the Week: Getting your kids to do what you want From the Fleet and Family Support Center The essence of great leadership is the ability to inspire people to do things that they can't be forced to do. The essence of great parenting, especially with older children and teens, is also represented by this ability. Are there any things that you want your kids to do that you can’t make them do? Are there any values you’d like them to adopt that you can’t make them adopt? Have you noticed that using brute force doesn’t get the job accomplished? Love and Logic Parenting teaches that the key to getting our children to do and believe what we want involves parenting around the Five "E's" of Love and Logic leadership. Example: Great leaders walk the talk. They stay calm when their kids are upset, stay positive when their kids are negative, and stick to their values even when it makes their youngsters mad.

Expectation: Great leaders have high expectations and transmit them through firm, yet caring, limits. Experience: Great leaders allow their kids to make decisions and learn from experience. Instead of micromanaging or rescuing, they allow their kids to make mistakes and grow from them. Education: Great leaders teach their children how to behave. During calm times, they don't hesitate to educate them about how to get ready for school in the morning, how to complete their chores, etc. Empathy: Great leaders know that the magnet that draws others toward them involves a combination of high expectations and great compassion. Parenting around these 5 "E's" doesn't ensure that our kids will always do what we want in the short term. Instead it dramatically increases the odds that they will follow our lead in the long run. If you’d like more information on Love and Logic Parenting classes offered through the Naples Fleet and Family Support Center, call 081-811-6372.

The girls also did well in field events: junior Maria Beard took first in triple jump and shot put (with a shot that improved on her already top distance in all of Europe), while senior Kierra Mims took first in the discus event. For the boys, sophomore Chris Mack dominated the short distances, taking first in the 100- and 200-meter races and qualifying in the 200-meter. Senior Adam Hammer took first in the 800-meter, while senior John Fain took first and qualified in the the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events with excellent times. Senior Sam LeVault took first in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles with ever-improving times. Additionally, the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team (sophomore Bret Baldwin, freshman Evan Bradley, freshman Michael Curtin and sophomore John Moulton) took first place. The other boys’ relay teams did not take first but did qualify in several race events. In a close race with Aviano, junior PJ Baker, junior Tyler Williams, Mack and sophomore Austin Bain took second in a close 4x100-meter race, but still qualified for the European tournament. The boys’ 4x400 relay team, consisting of Williams, LeVault, Baker and Hammer, also qualified in a close race with Aviano. Senior Ben DeRivera dominated the field events, taking first place in the high jump, shot put and discus. Members of the track team will travel today to Vicenza for one last shot at qualifying for the European championships, which will take place May 25 and 26 in Wiesbaden, Germany.

The Wildcats’ softball team: Continuing champs By Cynthia Fuerst and Jesse Costa

T

he 2012 Lady Wildcats have continued their unbeaten streak this fourth season of league play. They are the undefeated champions of Division II softball, as they have handily picked up the championships since the league started in 2009. The Lady Wildcat softball team has yet to lose a regular season game since the inception of high school softball and baseball in the Southern Europe conference in spring of 2009. The team has actually only lost one game in all of the games played (during the 2009 European Championship Tournament) and then rolled steadily toward the Division II European Championship that year. They have maintained that title since 2009. This type of success is the result a perfect combination of talent, coaching and hard work. The team core consists of multi-sport athletes. Veteran seniors Gee Trigg, Shannon Walsh and Courtney Plante, along with sophomore Vicky Krause and junior Isabel Krause, were all part of last year’s team. Walsh and Plante have been with the team since its inception. These athletes were also part of the Wildcats’ volleyball team that recently won the Division II championship. Coach Jesse Costa reported that the team “plays with focus and class.” “Their selfless attitude of playing for each other is what really makes them mesh like a well-oiled machine, firing on all cylinders… with each covering their positions and backing those up to their left and right,” Costa said. Coach Costa sees the girls as unconcerned about their own individual performances because they “put the team's results first and foremost in their thoughts.” Costa added that the senior team captains Gee Trigg and Shannon Walsh are first class motivators who lead the team through practice and preparation. They motivate the team to do their best on the field. The fire and motivation on the team is also fueled by sophomore catcher Vicky Krause, who is an “unbelievable catcher” who wields “a booming bat,” Costa said. V. Krause hit the team’s first team homerun this season and has not stopped. The team’s underclassmen bring a great deal of talent to the plate. Sophomore Davina Gutierrez is a powerful addition to the lineup, while sophomore Tara Carrico is an awesome athlete with amazing speed and ability who provides an infectious positive attitude. The team also benefits from the great pitching duo of junior Amanda Trigg and freshman Bayley Caldwell. Caldwell pitched her first no-hitter against Sigonella two weekends ago. Senior left fielder Courtney Plante and juniors Isabel Krause, Lindsey Arce, Mary Beard, and Paola Campos help solidify the lineup. The team has been developing sophomore Shanise Alexander and freshmen Harley Williams, Autumn Grant, and Nikki Jarvis, who will become a big part of the program in the years to come. Coach Costa sees the team as one that “gives its all” but is also continually evolving. The team will soon lose seniors Shannon Walsh, Courtney Plante and Gee Trigg to graduation and junior Amanda Trigg due to a permanent change of station. Still, Costa is confident that the returning players — supplemented by new transfers and freshman — will step up to keep the winning tradition going.

I went on a trip to Ercolano to see the ancient city of Herculaneum with my family this weekend. Herculaneum is near Pompeii, and like Pompeii, it was buried when Mt. Vesuvius erupted almost 2,000 years ago in 79 AD. It killed thousands of people, plants and animals around the volcano. Herculaneum was a very rich town. It had houses called “domus” and gyms and spas too. It was rediscovered in 1709 and excavators started to unbury the town. Unlike Pompeii, most of the villagers were able to escape the city and go to the beaches to try to get away, but they were killed by hot gases from Mt. Vesuvius after the eruption. Their bodies were found in the 1980s by accident and linked to Herculaneum. Unfortunately, Herculaneum is not being worked right now to save money for the modern city of Ercolano. Like Pompeii, Herculaneum costs money to excavate and maintain it for visitors. I am glad I got the chance to see it.

For six days, four students from Naples High School had the opportunity to examine their critical thinking, problem solving, and group interaction skills at the 2012 STEMposium in Oberwesel, Germany. The event, the first of its kind held for Department of Defense Dependents Schools in Europe, focused on developing students’ skills in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Experts in many different fields of science and teachers from schools around Europe guided the nearly ninety students who participated in the event. Students were given a realistic scenario that challenged them to come up with innovative new ways to solve the problems created by flooding and a possible nuclear disaster.

The event participants were also given the chance to marvel at the natural beauty of the surrounding area of Oberwesel, tour the European Space Agency headquarters, learn about green technology at the JUWI energy headquarters, and cross the Mosel river at a dam in Koblenz. During the event, students were put into teams with a mentor and 5 other students from different schools. The students were then assigned a job and had to work together with their teammates to design and perfect their solutions to the many problems caused by the flooding. Many students collaborated with other teams and shared ideas, helping to promote gracious professionalism. The event was a great learning opportunity for all of the students who attended, especially for those from Naples. Team Iota, led by Naples High School student Patrick Carnahan, placed second overall.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Unveiling part of the Vatican Secret Archives Story and photos by Panorama staff

Above left: The exhibit “Lux in arcana, the Vatican Secret archives reveals itself” features 100 documents from the Vatican’s private document repository. Above right: at the Capitoline Museums in Rome, you can now view a selection of documents from the Vatican Secret archives. The venerated museum is located in a piazza designed by Michelangelo.

t’s one of the best — and worst — kept secrets in the world. For the first time in four hundred years, the secrecy shrouding the Vatican’s Secret Archives will be temporarily lifted. Through the month of September, a carefully chosen group of one hundred docu-

I

ments is on display in an exhibit titled “Lux in Arcana, the Vatican Secret Archives reveals itself” at the Musei Capitolini in Rome. Founded in 1612 by Pope Paul V, the Secret Archives is the document repository of the Holy See. The title “Secret Archive” is somewhat of a misnomer as the Latin phrase “secretum” really translates to “private.” Up until now, only researchers could request access to portions of the 85 kilometers of shelves, which contain documents that date back as far as the eighth century. Hence the title “Lux in Arcana,” which translates to “light in the archives.” The vision behind the exhibit was to enlighten visitors to moments in history through first-hand sources and allow a glimpse into the treasure trove of the Secret Archives. The painstakingly selected documents are grouped thematically in categories such as “The Guardian of Memory,” “Tiara and Crown,” and “Saints, Queens and Courtiers.” Any of the documents deserves a mention, if not a paragraph, but a few of the texts are easily recognizable. For example, one of the first exhibits is the court record of Galileo’s trial before the Inquisition, in which he was convicted of heresy for his work that proposed that the earth moved around the sun. Included in the section on “Heretics, Crusaders and Knights” is the 1521 decree that formally excommunicated Martin Luther from the Catholic Church during the Reformation. Also displayed in this section is the court record of the trial of the Templars of France, written on a 60-meter-long parchment scroll (understandably, only a portion is unrolled). Another interesting display is the papal bull that was hastily drafted following Christopher Columbus’ return from his famed 1492 discovery of the new world. The Pope, pursuant to his powers in the Donation of Constantine (a forged document that is also on display), determined that all lands 100 leagues west of the Azores, even those yet to be discovered, were the property of Spain. One interesting display shows a version of a cryptograph that the pope used to send coded messages to his diplomats throughout Europe. This nearly indecipherable key sets out a complicated system whereby each consonant had two letter options and each vowel had three options. In addition, certain

words were represented by symbols. As oftentimes the key code was destroyed to prevent the enemy from translating secret messages, the Archives include many missives that are unable to be deciphered. However, there are many uncoded letters displayed throughout the exhibition. One letter was written by Michelangelo, who at the time was overseeing the construction of St. Peter’s Basilica. Following the death of Pope Paul III, all work on the construction ceased until a new pontificate was selected. Dismayed at the delay and worried about the lack of funds to pay workmen, Michelangelo wrote to the Bishop of Cessna requesting assistance. Another letter was written by Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland, to Pope Sixtus V announcing that she had been sentenced to death for treason and recommending her soul to God. Also prominently featured is a letter dating from 1502, in which members of the English Parliament urge Pope Clement VII to allow an annulment of King Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon so the king could wed Anne Boleyn. The familial seals of the signatories are suspended from the letter, while the multimedia display highlights the seals of those who were later beheaded by Henry VIII. Interestingly, this letter was misplaced in the archive until it resurfaced in 1920. “Lux in Arcana” features multimedia displays complete with English translations. Additionally, a free app is available for download on iOS and Android devices. This chance to peek inside the Vatican Secret Archives is more than a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – it's one that may not come around for another 400 years.

VenUe InFoRMatIon The Capitoline Museums (Musei Capitolini) are located in Rome’s Piazza del Campidoglio, a square designed by Michelangelo. Inside is one of the most important sculpture collections in Rome and a noteworthy picture gallery, the Pinacoteca Capitolina. You can find more information about the museum and the “Lux in Arcana” exhibit at http://en.museicapitolini.org. Tickets cost €12 and can be purchased at the museum or online at www.omniticket.it.
