A community lost to war

From Morale, Welfare and Recreation

et ready to celebrate U.S. Independence Day this weekend at Carney Park. On Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is sponsoring the two-day Festa Americana, which will feature fireworks, contests, prizes, food, beverages, craft vendors, carnival rides and musical performances. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. each day, with the last entry time being 10 p.m. Stage acts during the two-day festival will include the American Idols Armed Forces Entertainment Tour, Cartel, the Kelly Bell Band, the Willy Pete Band and other favorite local entertainers. The fireworks display is scheduled for 10 p.m. Sunday, July 1. For those who are soccer fans, a large multi-media screen will be set up to watch Sunday’s Euro 2012 final, thanks to a contibution by Giulio Cordua, S.r.l. Access to the event is open and free to all U.S. military ID cardholders, local national employees, and Carney Park privilege card-holders. Those with access privileges can sponsor up to six guests per adult ID card. Guest passes are still available for purchase for $4 at the Information, Tour and Travel (ITT) offices, the Liberty Center, the Auto/Wood Skills Center, or the Navy Outdoor Recreation Center. Those who register for their passes today online at www.mwritt.org. can choose to pick up their passes today at any of the above locations. On June 30, passes will be available for pickup only at the Support Site ITT office. No passes will be issued at the event. Though family members of local national employees are counted as guests, guest passes are not required for children 4 and under. In order to reduce traffic challenges and delays, U.S. military ID card holders are highly encouraged to ride the MWR buses from the bases to Carney Park and to carpool from other areas when possible.

Sailors repair bikes to send to Africa Story and photo by MC3 Caitlin Conroy, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe Sailors aboard Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples participated in a two-day community relations project repairing dilapidated bicycles to donate to people living in the Ivory Coast in Africa. Roughly 100 bikes ranging from small to large sizes were rounded up via donations and from around the base, and brought to a central location at NSA Naples Support Site to be fixed. “This was a great way to do something I love while contributing to a worthy cause,” said NSA Naples Command Master Chief (SW) Charles Collins, who has been repairing bikes since he was a child. “We started out with 105 dilapidated bikes and will get at least 50 to 60 in good working condition to ship to the Ivory Coast.” Work on the bikes took place Friday, June 22

and Saturday, June 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. About 10 volunteers participated from different local commands. “We fixed up as many bikes as possible to donate to the Ivory Coast of Africa, mainly to help kids who have to travel long distances for school and who have been unable to go to school because of the distance,” said Religious Program Specialist Seaman Jocelyn Morales, a visiting Navy Reservist. “Our goal was to give them a useable bike.” After two days of work, 68 bicycles were in good working condition to be sent to Africa. “It was very rewarding to be part of this event,” said Morales. “Not only did we help our command, but we also helped people in need. I’m really happy that I was able to be here – this was a great experience.” For more information about upcoming community relations projects, please call the Support Site Chapel at 081-811-4600 or the Capodichino Chapel at 081-568-3539.

Captain’s Corner

Happy Friday everyone! The big event this weekend is our Fourth of July celebration at Carney Park. Festa Americana is always extremely popular, and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) has been working hard to make this year’s event another amazing party. If you’re going, especially if you plan on enjoying the Paulaner beer, please carpool or take the bus. Avoid the traffic and congestion at the security checkpoints by arriving early. There will be lots of music, carnival rides and events to keep all ages entertained, and the big event Sunday night is the fireworks. This year we have taken steps to limit the crowd compared to previous years, which should make the event more enjoyable for everyone. It should be a great time this weekend, and I hope to see many of you there! Voters’ week is upon us. As I’m sure you know, this is a general election year for the United States, and we’ll have to mail in our absentee ballots early to ensure our voices are heard. Take advantage of the booths set up around base, and visit the voting assistance office to register and receive your absentee ballots. We serve in the military to defend, among other things, our right to choose our leaders in democratic elections. Be sure to take advantage of this right and vote this fall! More newcomers arrived this week, and there are a lot of new faces around. Welcome, everyone! Remember, newcomers, to get to Area Orientation (AO), which begins the Friday following the arrival of each AMC flight. If you didn’t come in on the rotator, be sure to still apply for sojourner’s permits for all civilians and head over to the housing office to get the housing process started. AO is not a prerequisite for these processes, and both are things that need to happen right away. Once you’ve done those, just jump into the next AO. Sponsors, please help pass this word along. If you are sponsoring someone, get in on the sponsorship class July 11 at the Fleet and Family Support Center. We are tracking the threatened truck strike that is currently set to run from July 8 to13. This strike was rescheduled from May, and we’re hoping it is cancelled completely, as often happens with strikes. However, hope is not a plan and we must be ready for any contingency. We experienced a truckers strike earlier this year, as many of you will recall, which resulted in disrupted traffic, a cessation of deliveries of goods and services, and shortages in gasoline and bombola gas to some residents. Prepare now for the worst case scenario and be part of the solution. Fill up your gas tanks, top off your bombola gas for your residence, stock up on necessary items like prescription drugs, and plan on carpooling or taking the bus to work from the Support Site. Make sure you are ready before July 8. We’ll be sure to keep the community informed via the normal emergency communication channels of PAO notes, Facebook, Twitter, the Command Desktop Notification System (CDNS) and AFN. The Fourth of July marks the 236th anniversary of the birth of the United States. I’m honored to represent my country in Italy, which has long been one of America’s closest allies. I hope all of the Americans living here in Naples share that sense of honor. Our nation has entrusted us with representing the very best of America while abroad. That’s a big responsibility. Remember, Italy has long stood side by side with the United States, and graciously hosts and supports our efforts around the world. As we speak, Italian soldiers are fighting and dying in Afghanistan in support of our mutual interest of peace and stability around the world. Enjoy this weekend at Festa Americana and thank our Italian hosts for their friendship and continued support. Be smart this weekend, make solid risk decisions when drinking or undertaking recreational activities, and enjoy the time off in celebration of our nation’s birthday. Have fun and stay safe!

While registration for the event buses closed Wednesday, patrons may pay bus fees at the bus stop and ride on a space-available basis. Boarding for space-available seats will start two minutes before each departure time. Unfortunately, the availability of space-available seats cannot be guaranteed. A roundtrip bus ride costs $2 per person or $5 per family of three or more. Children under 2 can ride free if sitting on an adult’s lap. Those who purchased bus tickets in advance should be at their assigned bus stop 10 minutes prior to departure. Due to negotiation issues, an alternate parking lot outside of Carney Park has not been secured and will be not be available for use during Festa Americana. For this reason, there will be no fee to park inside Carney Park for the duration of the event. Patrons who have already purchased parking passes will be contacted and will receive full refunds. Leonardo’s home reopens to visitors

Giro d’Italia bike race to come to Naples

Leonardo da Vinci’s home recently reopened to the public after an extensive restoration. The Renaissance artist was born 560 years ago in the Tuscan village of Anchiano. The restored house contains an interactive multi-media installation. The ticket costs €2, or visitors can purchase an €8 package which includes admission to the nearby Leonardo Museum in Vinci, the home of the artist’s father.

Naples will host the 96th edition of the Giro d’Italia bike race in 2013. It will be 50 years since the one and only time the city hosted the race back in 1963. The race will take place Saturday, May 4, 2013 and it could involve a sprinter-friendly circuit through the city’s streets. The start will be in Piazza Vittoria with the finish line along Via Caracciolo. There will be a team time trial in Ischia on Sunday, May 5. It is expected that the race will head south toward Basilicata, Calabria and Puglia. The mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, announced that by this summer he will inaugurate the largest bike path in south of Italy, which will be 20 kilometers long.

Authorities arrest 65 organized crime suspects, including mafia godmother A series of dawn raids by law enforcement using helicopters and sniffer dogs lead to the arrest of 65 people suspected of extortion, possession of illegal arms, robbery and drug-dealing. A mafia godmother was arrested among them. Her nickname was “big female kitten.” Her husband was murdered by rivals six years ago, after which she took the reins of the Camorra clan. She suffered gunshot wounds three years later. She is also accused of building ties with other clans. Police confiscated properties and goods owned by the suspects, including car dealerships, bars, supermarkets, houses, cars and bank accounts.

Participants in a Basic Rider Course learn about motorcycle safety at the Naval Support Activity Naples Support Site June 23.

Uneasy rider Story and photos by Laura Byrd

remember vividly the first hour of my first day at the Sturgis Bike Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. It was a scene I’ll never forget. We had just arrived in town and were headed for our hotel. We rounded a corner and saw three colorful custom motorcycles on their sides in the street, and the bodies of two riders lying on the road. Both men were completely still and both were bleeding from head injuries. Emergency vehicles had yet to arrive, and a horrified crowd of onlookers was gathering. It was a jarring experience for someone new to motorcycling, and it set the tone for my attitude about wearing a helmet the next day. South Dakota has no mandatory helmet law. I steadfastly wore mine for several days at Sturgis after seeing that accident. Eventually however, I removed it. I knew it wasn’t smart and I knew the risk, but I did it anyhow. Call it peer pressure or a sense of immortality, riding among thousands of people sans their helmets coaxed me into that seductive feeling many motorcyclists feel when they ride – a sense of euphoric freedom. But nobody knows better than our military that any freedom isn’t really free. There

I

is always a price and the price can be your life when you’re riding. During a recent accident here in Italy, our Harley Davidson Street Glide was totaled. My gear saved my life. Even with a helmet, I sustained a concussion, facial lacerations and a broken nose. Had I been in a country that didn’t require helmets and had it been over 90 degrees outside, I can’t honestly say for sure I would have made the intelligent choice to wear a helmet. Poor judgment might have resulted in a deadly decision. Knowing the risks and taking them anyhow is a danger for many riders. If a motorcycle rider tells you he has never done anything risky or foolish on his or her bike, that’s likely untrue. We’ve all made some bad choices, even when properly schooled and well aware of the guidelines for safe riding. Riders like James Davis, a motorcycle safety coach at Activity Support Naval Naples, will admit an impulsive decision on a bike can come with heavy repercussions. Davis, who is a supervisory specialist at Naval Investigative Criminal Services, shared how a poor decision he made while riding resulted in injury. “Last August I was on my Honda SC 1300 and six of us were riding in a group to a

motorcycle rally outside Naples,” Davis said. “I was in the middle of the pack, and when our lead rider took an exit I missed it. That was no big deal. I just kept going through a sweeping curve until the road straightened out and I could see a long stretch of two-line highway with no traffic for about four miles ahead of me. “I checked my mirrors and saw two bikes behind me, but nobody else. I thought there had been a third rider behind me — Mark Snyder usually rode at the back of the pack, but I assumed he had made the exit. I looked over my shoulder, checked my mirrors one more time, than started a U-turn in the road. “The next thing I know there is Mark on his Harley Davidson Road King headed right for me. He hit the brakes hard, but his front wheel hit my left saddlebag. I spun at least one revolution and snapped my steering mechanism. My foot went underneath the engine when the bike spun and my leg was stuck. I went to the hospital and still have problems with my leg to this day.” When a rider like Davis is willing to be accountable and has survived a mistake, that person becomes a better rider who can pass along sage advice to those who haven’t yet suffered the repercussions of an error in judgment. “In retrospect, I should have never made that rolling Uturn,” said Davis. “There was a wide shoulder along that road. It would have been better to just stop. I should have pulled over, waited for everyone in the group to catch up on the side of the road, then turned back with all the bikes together.” It’s easy to look back and recognize your mistakes; it’s

before you’ve made a critical error. Open roads, warm weather and a country like Italy where there appear to be no rules create a siren call that the leaders at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples worry will cost everyone dearly. Recently there’s been a rash of reckless riding that has been brought to the command’s attention, said Joe Machado, another motorcycle training coach at NSA Naples. “We had a guy on the Autostrada ducking through traffic at over 180 kilometers (per hour),” Machado said. “He was reported and recently lost all of his driving privileges for six months. We had another guy doing wheelies across the parking lot in Carney Park with little kids nearby. People were livid. We’re very visible here, and putting ourselves out there like that makes us look bad.” Machado added that even if locals appear to perform dangerous maneuvers on motorcycles and scooters, that isn’t an excuse for service members to follow suit. “You don’t have to do what they’re doing,” Machado said. “Watching our guys ride between a semi and the guardrail here – that’s just not smart. Your brain is part of your gear. It doesn’t do any good to put on all the right gear and not use it.” Being smart includes remembering that riding in Italy is a double-edged sword. There are serious road hazards here that we don’t encounter in other places — namely, scooters. Anthony Bybel, a former rider coach who is retired from the Navy, knows firsthand the dangers of scooters can present on the road. He collided with one in August 2008. “I was riding my Harley Davidson Night Train between Gaeta and Formia,” Bybel said. “I was making a left hand turn across one lane that the on-coming cars had turned into three lanes. I waited until I had eye contact with all three drivers and they had all stopped and waved at me to go ahead. “I started my turn and was suddenly T-boned by a scooter that had gone around all three vehicles on the right. I didn’t see him coming and it never dawned on me a scooter would pass like that in such a small space. We both went down and my first concern was him, so I helped him pick up his bike, made sure he was OK and checked to make sure that his

bike would start. Then he rode away and left me hanging there with my badly damaged bike. I had to call a tow truck and I had no proof the accident happened the way it did.” The lesson Bybel learned was twofold. Always assume a scooter is coming at you from some direction, and always carry a camera on your bike. Photographs of a bike while it is down at the scene are a critical part of demonstrating exactly what has happened during an accident — an accident you probably are much more likely to have here in Naples than at home in the United States. “The older you get, the more you realize that bad things can happen to you,” said Bybel. “A lot of young people on bikes come here and think they can do anything – there is a mentality that you can get away with doing things here that you couldn’t get away with in the States. So people take some very stupid risks. The Rider’s Code is to pay attention to other drivers and the people around you. It’s more important here than it is

Monika French, the U.S. Navy’s ombudsman at large, visited Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples June 19 through 21 as part of a military installation tour designed to help her connect with military spouses and their families. French’s three-day visit included meet-and-greets with NSA Naples sailors and ombudsmen from different area commands. Appointed as the U.S. Navy’s Ombudsman at Large by Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert in February 2012, French considers herself first and foremost a mother of two. She’s been a Navy wife for 32 years and has lived across the nation and around the world. And although she’s taken advantage of opportunities to be part of the workforce in the communities she’s lived in, her true calling is that of volunteer. She said that trips to places like Naples help her stay in touch with the needs of Navy families worldwide. “I feel these trips are so important because the CNO cares deeply about all the Navy families across the globe,” said French. “By seeing the pro-

grams in place firsthand, I am better able to provide valuable feedback to the CNO back in Washington. I am also able to provide the message to the families that despite being away from the United States, they are not forgotten.” French’s volunteer service resume includes participation in such groups as the Arlington Ladies of Washington, DC; the San Diego Armed Services YMCA; the Avante Garde Committee of San Diego; the Navy’s COMPASS Program in both San Diego and Guam; the Pacific Northwest’s C.O.R.E. program; the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society in the Pacific Northwest, Guam, and San Diego; command programs in Hawaii and San Diego; the Washington, D.C., Navy Ball Committee; the Guam USO; various spouses’ organizations at every duty station; and the Navy League of the United States. Members of the Naval Support Activity Naples community said that French’s visit showed them that Navy leaders back home truly are taking an interest in the lives of sailors and family members overseas. “She was very approachable and seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say,” said Yeoman Seaman Apprentice Thomas Fore, president of the

Coalition of Sailors against Destructive Decisions (CSADD). “I feel honored that she took time out of her busy schedule to meet with local sailors. As a junior sailor and president of CSADD, it was great to see her take such an interest in our organization, what we are about and how we are helping our local community.” Aviation Support Equipment Technician 3rd Class Rebekah Fazendin agreed. “She definitely showed us how much we are appreciated,” Fazendin said. French’s visit also provided guidance for local command ombudsmen, which will help them better serve the military community here, said Heather Staib-Jerzy, NSA Naples ombudsman. “It was great having a representative from so high up on the ombudsman chain here to let us in Italy know that the CNO is paying attention, wants our input and is here to support us in our effort to support the community,” Staib-Jerzy said. Mrs. French’s visit to NSA Naples was part of a larger tour of the European region, during which she visited several military installations.

The commander of Navy Installations Command (CNIC) visited Naval Support Activity Naples June 21 as part of a multinational tour of installations in Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia. In Naples, Vice Adm. William D. French met with installation leaders for the first time since taking command in February 2012. After visiting Naples, French traveled to Rota, Spain to look at base operations and check on-the-ground progress toward basing four U.S. Navy destroyers there as forward-deployed naval forces. During French's visit, he expressed the value he sees in Naval Station Rota, the importance of the current and growing missions there and the need for Rota's help in the Navy-wide effort to develop more efficient means of executing missions. French said that Rota embodies the three key principles of the Chief of Naval Operation's Sailing Directions: war fighting first, operating forward and being ready. "I think you guys are the crux of all three of those things," said French during a meeting with base leadership and staff. "You are certainly forward, you are certainly part of our readiness, and you are certainly part of what makes war fighting possible in this area of responsibility ... and the four guided-missile destroyers we're bringing here will even magnify what Rota brings to the fight and to the table." Although Rota is growing operationally with the addition of the four ships by 2015, French highlighted the need for the Navy, at all levels, to continue to develop more efficient means to execute missions while remaining effective. "I'm really here to walk around today to look around and see the things that you guys need and where can we help you," said French. CNIC is looking to boost efficiencies in an effort to bridge a $500 million gap in its budget by 2014, French said. "How ever you can help us contribute to that, whether it's figuring out how to conduct port operations more efficiently, air ops more efficiently; whether it's figuring out how to deliver moral, welfare and recreation services more efficiently, that's really what we're looking at." One goal of this tour of installations is to take note of best practices and to share them across the CNIC enterprise so everyone can benefit, said French. CNIC's mission is to enable the Navy's operating concept through enterprise alignment of all shore installation support to the fleet, fighter and family. Energy conservation Chill out with cool energy savings From the NSA Naples Energy Management Team

Are hot summer days putting a strain on your building’s air conditioning? Maybe you don’t even have air conditioning. Here are some tips for staying cool during the heat of the day. 1) Turn off everything that’s not needed. See if you can shut off overhead lights and use task lights. If it’s using power, it’s putting heat in the room. 2) Use a fan to move the air. A small fan near your desk can make you feel several degrees cooler. Be sure to shut it off when you’re not using it. 3) Pull the shades on the south and west windows if the direct sun is getting in. 4) Dress for success, or dress for the weather? If necessary, be the one to start a fashion trend of more casual dress on hot days. Tell everyone you’re dressed for energy security.

NATO community celebrates arrival of summer with yacht club event By Franco Veltri and Gianni D’Addio

The Summer Party held at Nisida on Sunday by the Naples NATO Yacht Club (NNYC) met all expectations: a day of fun, eating and sport attended by a multinational crowd. The event provided a way to celebrate the arrival of summer and the recent success of the Club in important sailing competitions, but also a rare opportunity for the families of the NATO community to meet outside of the formal working environment. Volunteers from Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States provided an assortment of national eating specialties, with a menu ranging from cheeseburgers and hotdogs to curry-wursts and sauerkrauts. The menu also included dishes such as lasagna, fried fish, paella and small cakes. Event attendees enjoyed swimming, water games and cold beer under the vigilant eyes of Alfonso Candia, the NNYC commodore who led the team that organized the event. He was also still visibly proud of the results achieved by NNYC sailboats, which were recognized June 20 during an award ceremony at Circolo Nautico della Vela in Naples. Thirty-six boats belonging to the main sailing clubs of the

Campi Flegrei area raced seven times from March to May in the Gulfs of Pozzuoli and Naples and in the waters of Ischia and Procida for the yearly Campi Flegrei Championship. Six boats defended the NNYC colors: Distinti Saluti (skipper Gianni D'Addio), Mizar III (skipper Antonio Esposito), Voglia di Mare (skipper Mimmo Carafa), Calipso (skipper Mario de Blasio), Bruda (skipper Tony Fierro) and Septentrion (skipper Giuseppe del Grosso). These boats brought home a total of seven first-place

wins, two second-place titles and seven third-place titles. Thanks to those brilliant results, the NNYC boats earned first place in Open Class A (Distinti Saluti), second place in Open Class B (Voglia di Mare), and third place in Open Class A (Mizar III). The activities of the club will continue during summer with sailing courses and racing events, to culminate in September with the traditional International Regatta and the Admirals’ Cup.

Warrant Officer Vincenzo Pedata of the Italian Air Force was recently named as Allied Maritime Command Naples’ Officer Non-Commissioned (NCO) of the Semester for the first half of 2012. In an award ceremony carried out in front of the staff of the headquarters, Pedata received the commendation from Deputy Commander Vice Adm. Andreas Krause, who stood in for Commander Vice Adm. Rinaldo Veri. Krause said that Pedata was chosen by a committee of peers led by Master Chief Petty Officer Mario Matacena, the Pedata headquarters’ senior enlisted advisor, making this a particularly important recognition. Pedata serves in the headquarters’ protocol office. His commendation referenced the high standards of performance, professionalism and organizational ability he has shown in this critical office during the past six years. During Pedata’s years of service, his role in maintaining the excellent reputation of the command has been critical, and his superb attention to detail and unswerving pursuit of excellence has also been noted by the many external agencies he works with in organizing events in support of the commander and the command group. "As an Air Force NCO working in a maritime command, this award has really great significance for me," Pedata said after the ceremony. "However, the protocol office is a real joint effort, and this award could only have come through the fantastic team spirit my chain of command has created." Warrant Officer Vincenzo Pedata was born in 1966 in Naples, Italy. He joined the Italian Air Force in March 1987. He has a wife, Camilla, and two daughters, Maria Francesca and Alessia. He is an avid supporter of the SSC Napoli Football Club and Wycombe Wanderers F.C. Warrant Officer Pedata is the seventh NCO to receive this award since the program was established in January 2009. Sustained superior performance, self-improvement and personal attitude towards a multi-service and multi-national assignment were among the deciding criteria for the award. The selectee will be a role model for the future NATO enlisted and other rank force.

Comedian Bo Irvine talks to sailors about risk management By MC2 Class Jason Howard, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe Comedian Bo Irvine spoke with sailors at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples about risk management and personal safety June 25 and June 26. During his two-day visit to NSA Naples, Irvine conducted four safety briefs on risk management and occupational health as the community prepared for the Fourth of July holiday weekend. “Every job in the military is risky, so the military recruits people willing to take that risk,” said Irvine. “That’s why there will always be safety briefs to remind members about weighing the risks involved on the job and off.” Irvine used his renowned comedic humor to add a new spin to routine safety briefs. “I enjoyed the presentation,” said Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class Jessica Angelo. “More people would pay attention during safety briefs if they were presented like this more often.” Sailors in attendance learned about being responsible in everyday situations including vehicle safety, situational awareness and watching out for your fellow shipmates. “Life is risk, and how we judge the levels of risk day to day is risk management,” said Irvine. “It bothers me so much to see young people die because someone got behind the wheel while intoxicated. Telling a shipmate who is about to make a mistake that they are doing something stupid isn’t stupid. It’s actually pretty smart.” Irvine travels all over the world spreading the message about risk management and safety. “I learned a lot from Irvine,” said Intelligence Specialist 3rd Class Eileen Sempa. “I think if the Navy wanted more sailors to pay attention during safety briefs, they should get rid of the (presentations with) PowerPoints and bring in the comedians.” For more information on events coming to NSA Naples, visit http://www.cnic.navy.mil/naples/index.htm. Senior students from the International School of Naples closed one chapter of their lives and opened another Friday, June 22 when the school held its 2012 graduation ceremony. The ceremony concluded the 13 graduating students’ experience this year as they gathered together, some for the last time, before pursuing higher educational opportunities. Adm. Bruce W. Clingan, commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples, was the event’s keynote speaker. During the ceremony, Clingan lauded the students for their outstanding efforts and achievements. “I am so proud and pleased to be part of this

ceremony today,” he said in his address. “Graduation is walking through a door into a world of choices.” The JFC commander’s participation in community events such as this highlights the strong bond between the local community and the Naples-based headquarters. “In addition to the strong friendships, the good experiences and the wholesome scholastic growth, it is our hope that these students have gained a particularly unique and a better understanding of their NATO neighbors,” said Dr. Diana Sodano, JFC Naples’ community relations officer. The International School of Naples is a college preparatory school located on the JFC Naples headquarters compound in Bagnoli.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: the massive Lord MacGuffin, the surly Lord Macintosh and the cantankerous Lord Dingwall. Merida's actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric witch for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her skills and resources — including her clever and mischievous triplet brothers — to undo a beastly curse before it's too late, discovering the meaning of true bravery.

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper — part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story. Realizing a serial killer is on the loose using Poe's writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author's help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer's next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before its too late.

Luke is left to wander the streets of New York destitute, haunted by guilt, and tormented by the knowledge that he will always be watched, while anyone he develops a relationship with will also be killed. But when he witnesses a frightened twelve-year-old Chinese girl, Mei, being pursued by the same gangsters who killed his wife, Luke impulsively jumps to action and straight into the heart of a deadly high-stakes war. Mei, he discovers, is no ordinary girl, but an orphaned math prodigy forced to work for the Triads as a "counter." He discovers that she holds in her memory a priceless numerical code that the Triads, the Russian mob and a corrupt faction of the NYPD will kill for. Realizing he's the only person Mei can trust, Luke tears a swath through the city's brutal underworld to save an innocent girl's life... and perhaps even redeem his own.

the church of San Michele Arcangelo can still be seen in San Pietro Infine, overlooking the ruins of the rest of the town.

San Pietro Infine lives on as a testament to war’s destruction Story and photos by Don Gawlik

hree days during the end of 1943 were all it took to erase this community forever. German forces along the Winter Line had been preparing for the Allies since the Italian capitulation in September, including putting Italian males to work preparing defenses. The village of San Pietro Infine, with narrow lanes of medieval origins, had become a key location to engage the U.S. Fifth Army on a critical route: Highway 6

T

through the Liri Valley, halfway between Naples and Rome. In anticipation of things to come, the town’s population carved caves in the hillsides made of soft tufa stone. The Winter Line was actually a series of German fortifications stretching across Italy at its narrowest width. Specifically, the Gustav Line passed through Cassino, and its subsidiary line, the Bernhardt, used San Pietro Infine, nearby Mignano, and the surrounding topography to confront the Allies. In December 1943, the 36th

Used as a Nazi fortification during World War II, the village of San Pietro Infine was 98 percent destroyed as Nazi forces retreated in 1943.

(Texas) Infantry Division approached the Mignano Gap, having already swept through the Venafro area. Arriving at the Liri Valley, it was easy to see how the Germans used Mt. Sammucro, which dominated the heights above San Pietro Infine, and Monte Lungo, located on the opposite side of the valley, to perfect the control and dominance of this path to Rome. San Pietro Infine’s history can be traced back to the fifth or sixth century, but the town could not survive the total destruction of artillery, mortars, close combat, and the “scorched earth” policy of the retreating Germans in mid-December 1943. Here, the Liri Valley earned the nickname “Death Valley” from members of the 36th Infantry Division. Hollywood director John

Huston filmed his documentary “The Battle of San Pietro” alongside the fighting infantrymen. The attack on Monte Lungo was the first time Italian forces fought alongside the Allies, and they paid a high price to do so. The result of the battle of San Pietro Infine became known to

the Italians as the “Pompeii of World War II.” With the village 98 percent destroyed, its remains became the Parco Della Memoria Storica in 2002. Its old mill, now the Visitor Center, is a symbol of the defense of civilization, democracy and freedom. The new town of San Pietro has been rebuilt further down the hill. This new national monument was organized to help the visitor witness the drama suffered by San Pietro’s inhabitants. Through pictures, sounds and sensations, visitors follow a multimedia path to relive stories and emotions. Out in the parking area is an area of flags containing two stone markers that note the sacrifice of town inhabitants and the 36th Infantry Division. Walking to a nearby valley on the side of Mt. Sammucro, a guide helps visitors understand how more than 500 inhabitants, using tools as small as kitchen utensils, carved caves into the hillsides to help them survive the cold, the unhygienic conditions, and the lack of food and water. On the hillside above the Visitor Center, the Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo sits quietly, appearing now as it did on December 17, 1943 when the Allies liberated the town. Its solemn facade joins other buildings in the old town that are tumbling from the forces of growing vegetation and gravity, silent ever since the departure of the San Pietresi, the residents of San Pietro Infine.

IF YOU GO To reach the Parco della Memoria Storica, take the A1 toward Rome for about 80 kilometers and exit at San Vittore. After the toll gate, turn left on the SS430 toward Venafro. After about 2.5 kilometers, turn right on the SR6, then left on the SR6 dir after another 2.5 kilometers. Follow the brown signs to the park. Summer hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 3:30 to 7 p.m. The website’s contact number is incorrect: the correct number 345-349-0833, the

Panorama JuLy 29, 2012 one listed on the park’s brochure. There is an entrance fee. Visit the park’s web site for further information at www.parcodellamemoriastorica.com/web. If you have more time, drive further down the SR6 dir to Venafro. Through the passion of three young men who spent their adolescent years exploring the battle lines above the town, the Winter Line Venafro museum opened in 2008. Located in the historic part of town, it is an amazing collection of artifacts and memories about Venafro’s World War II history. No entrance fee is required. The museum website at www.winterlinevenafro.it/public/cms/ says that openings to the public will be guaranteed the second and last Sunday of every month from 5 to 8 p.m. You can confirm the opening hours or schedule a guided visit outside of these times by calling Luciano at 339-701-4272. After leaving San Pietro Infine, return to the SR6 and turn left. About 3 kilometers down the road on the left will be the parking area for the Sacrario Militare Italiano. This location, on the slopes of Monte Lungo, helps visitors understand the Italian sacrifice with a visitor’s center, cemetery, and static displays of vehicles and armor in the parking area. No entrance fee is required. Hours are listed on the website www.prolocomignano.it/sacrario _militare.html.

Residents of San Pietro Infine fled and carved caves into the nearby tufa hillside to escape the fighting in their village.
