Base increases DUI check points By MC2 (SW) John Herman, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe

The Periodic Health Assessment, explained

Friday, OctOber 12, 2012

Security personnel stationed at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples nearly doubled the number of sobriety check points they performed this summer compared to the same period last year, and the frequent checks will continue even into fall and winter. These checks happen at random and apply to people both entering and leav-

ing NSA Naples installations. The goal is to crack down on people committing driving under the influence (DUI) infractions because of alcohol consumption, base officials said. In July and August 2012, security personnel at NSA Naples performed a total of 196 random DUI checks aboard Capodichino and the Support Site, compared to 104 checks during the same period in 2011. The summer 2012 numbers appear even higher compared to

July and August 2010, when base security personnel performed only 71 random sobriety inspections. The end of summer does not mean an end to the checks. This is a program that continues year-round as security maintains a high level of vigilance, said Master-at-Arms 1st Class (SW) Roderick Hopes, the training leading petty officer for NSA Naples security. see DUI Page 5

Upgrade to base theater allows for 3D movies By MC3 Josh Bennett, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe

aval Support Activity (NSA) Naples’ Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) has completed an upgrade to the Reel Times 2 movie theater at the NSA Naples’ Support Site that will allow members of the community to enjoy three dimensional (3D) movies. The theater will begin showing 3D films this weekend, MWR officials said. Disposable 3D glasses must be purchased separate from the movie ticket

De Luca said the theater is encouraging people to keep the first pair they buy. He said there should not be any risk for infec-

Captain’s Corner By Capt. Scott Gray NSA Commanding Officer

It was great to see many of you at the town hall meeting on Wednesday. Hopefully it was informative for those of you who came. We only had an hour or so to cover the information and take questions, so if you want to hear more from me on the issues facing the base, be sure to tune into my weekly radio show on AFN. That show happens live every Friday morning from 7 to 8 a.m. on 106.0 FM, and you can even suggest topics or submit questions via Facebook. Let’s keep the conversation going! It’s only about three weeks until the presidential election, and everyone is talking about it. Have you mailed your ballot yet? There is still time for a write-in ballot, so log on to fvap.gov or call our voting assistance office at 081-568-3888 to exercise your right to vote. As always during election cycles, remember to keep conversations polite and civil and, if you’re wearing a uniform, remember to remain neutral, as while you are in uniform you represent the service. It’s especially easy to cross this line on social media, where people have the propensity to post first and regret later. If you are in uniform, or if your social media profile clearly identifies you as a member of the U.S. military, you are not necessarily free to share your opinion. I encourage you to think before you post. On the subject of social media, I want to encourage everyone to think before posting, regardless of the topic. There are a number of ways we can cause harm by venting our frustrations on the Internet. Not only could we be bullying, threatening, or demeaning to someone, we could be putting our troops in harm’s way. We’ve all seen the AFN commercials on operational security. You may be upset that your wife’s deployment just got extended for another two weeks, but your post about it just told a foreign intelligence analyst that same information. Please use good judgment online. If you’ve used the bowling alley or the movie theater this week, you know they’ve both undergone some extensive renovation. Thanks to Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), we now have 3D movies and a state-of-the-art bowling center that looks really sharp. I encourage you to go check out those two facilities. I predict you will be very impressed. Tomorrow is the U.S. Navy’s 237th birthday. We’re honoring the Navy’s birthday today with a bell ringing ceremony on Capodichino and again next week at the Navy Ball. There is a wealth of heritage and heroism in the annals of the United States Navy, and I encourage anyone connected to the Navy — sailor, civilian, family member, even a member of our sister services or NATO nations — to familiarize themselves with these stories. Our stories hearken back to John Paul Jones and his improbable victory over the British frigate Serapis, and continue through the years to the ironclad battles in the Civil War. They include the Great White Fleet’s cruise around the world; the battles fought on, above, and under the sea in the Pacific during World War II; and the counter-piracy and maritime security operations we are engaged in all over the world today. Many of you know that 70 percent of the world is covered by water. It is also true that 80 percent of the world’s population lives near the sea, 90 of the world’s commerce moves by water, and the U.S. Navy is 100 percent on watch around the globe, keeping the seas safe. I’m proud to be a member of U.S. Navy. Today, only 1 percent of the country’s population volunteers to serve in the military. For those in uniform, you have already done more for your country than 99 percent of the rest of the population ever will. I hope each and every one of you take great pride in your service and will continue take advantage of the numerous opportunities the Navy offers. Have a great weekend!

Caserta’s Royal Palace needs preservation, superintendent says Last week, the superintendent of the Royal Palace in Caserta appealed to the government to help preserve Caserta’s treasured Bourbon palace, known in Italian as the Reggia di Caserta. In the past 10 days, two parts of the façade collapsed due to deteriorating iron clamps that anchor the marble structures. Earlier, a piece of a façade’s tympanum fell into a square. In the last few years, the courtyards, vestibules, park and Palatine Chapel of the landmark have been featured in several Hollywood movies. The building's interior appeared in George Lucas's second Star Wars trilogy, where it was the home of the young Queen Amidala. It has also doubled as the Vatican in two more recent blockbusters, Mission: Impossible III and Ron Howard's adaptation of the Dan Brown prequel to the Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons. The Reggia di Caserta has been a World Heritage Site since 1997.

Man arrested for puncturing woman’s tires 45 times in 3 months An 80-year-old man in Salerno punctured the wheels of a 40-year-old woman’s car 45 times in a three-month period. After days of ambushes, the Carabinieri caught the stalker red-handed and arrested him. The man lived in a house close to the victim. The motive for his actions is still unknown. The damage amounted to approximately € 6,000 for nearly 80 tires punctured.

Cross in Florence’s Santa Croce restored after 2-year process

A €163,000-restoration has been completed of the large wooden cross that hangs over the main altar in the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. The cross, which dates back to 1320, had signs of insect infestation, and the painted surface was scratched and darkened with dirt. The foundation Friends of Florence funded the restoration, which took two years. The cross is by the Master of Figline, an artist who appears to have been active in Assisi and Florence from 1310 to 1330, and who some say worked with the famous medieval artist Giotto.

Besides housing the work of several great Italian artists, the Basilica of Santa Croce is the burial place of several illustrious Italians, including Michelangelo, Galileo Galilei, Niccolò Macchiavelli and the artist Lorenzo Ghiberti.

Naples exhibit chronicles stories of Italian emigrants An exhibition about Italian emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries opened at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University in Naples. The show consists of a series of photographs, documents and original objects from archives and private collections of the millions of people who left their native villages to cross the ocean looking for a better life between 1861 and the 1960s. The show, titled “Partono I bastimenti” (“The ships are leaving”), includes a little-known story of Italian soldiers from the army of the defeated Bourbon monarchy. In 1861, the Italian soldiers were loaded on boats to New Orleans and recruited to fight on behalf of southern secessionists in the U.S. Civil War. The show was conceived and developed by Francesco Nicotra, director of special programs at the Washington, D.C.-based National ItalianAmerican Foundation (NIAF). The exhibit is free and open to the public through Dec.13.

Italy seeks biosphere status for two more of its parks The Italian environmental ministry announced that two more Italian sites have been submitted to UNESCO to be included in its directory of biosphere reserves. The sites that were submitted are the Sila national park in the Calabria region and the Po Cunese regional park in the Piedmont region, also knows as Monviso after the nearby mountain. Italy already has eight biosphere reserves that are recognized by UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere program: Cilento and Vallo di Diano; Circeo National Park; CollemeluccioMontedimezzo; Miramare; Selva Pisana; Somma Vesuvio and Miglio d’Oro; Tuscan Islands; and Valle del Ticino. If the two additional parks receive the biosphere status, they would be united to create the first cross-border biosphere reserve in Europe.

In Naples' ancient Spaccanapoli district, Via San Gregorio Armeno is known for its artisans that produce hand-crafted presepe, or nativity scenes made from bark and moss. Locals shop along the narrow street to find figurines and other items to decorate their presepe each year. (Photo by Melissa Kabukuru)

Where the Christmas spirit lives year round By Melissa Kabukuru rarely go to Spaccanapoli without taking a stroll along Via San Gregorio Armeno. The narrow street in Naples’ historic center is the focal point of a longstanding Neapolitan Christmas tradition: the presepe, or nativity scene, examples of which are on display there year round. Throughout the year, artisans specializing in making these nativity scenes can be seen hard at work in their shops that line Via San Gregorio Armeno. They produce scenes of bark and moss that locals can embellish to create their own vision of the night of Christ’s birth. In Naples, that vision may include some modern-day additions. The craftsmen of Via San Gregorio Armeno produce terracotta or wood-cut figurines of the Holy Family, a must for any nativity scene; but they also create representations of Naples soccer players, notorious Italian politicians (Berlusconi comes to mind) and celebrities. Another perennial favorite for the presepe is an electric-powered Naples pizzaiolo, or pizza maker, who can be seen sliding pizzas in and out of an oven. I have never bought a nativity scene of my own. But that doesn’t stop me from admiring the work of these craftsmen who have spent their lives producing them. Visiting in October provides the chance to see them bent over their work, carefully carving a wood figurine or painting a terracotta statuette. As it gets closer to Christmas, the crowds of locals and tourists flooding the street make it harder to see the artisans at work. Of course, a visit to the street in November and December is also exciting, but for different reasons. The number of items on display triples in the days leading up to the winter holidays, and the stores extend their hours, creating a twinkling

GETTING THERE Driving directly to Via San Gregorio Armeno is not an option due to increased traffic regulations in the city center. But if you take the Metro Line 1 to Piazza Dante, you can pass through the Port’Alba archway at the north end of the piazza

and continue along Via San Pietro a Maiella, which later turns into Via dei Tribunali. When you hit Piazza San Gaetano, you’ll find the start of Via San Gregorio Armeno at the south end of the piazza. The street connects to Via San Biagio dei Librai. You can also take the Metro line 2 from Bagnoli to Montesanto and walk to Piazza Dante from there; you can then proceed with the directions above.

draw blood. Drivers whose blood alcohol content readings are over the legal limit will have their keys confiscated by security, and will face formal charges and disciplinary action. The increase in check points seems to be deterring DUI incidents among members of the NSA Naples command. As of last week, NSA Naples’ sailors had gone 111 days without a DUI infraction. Among the Naples-area military community as a whole, there have been 23 DUI infractions so far in 2012, said Chief Air Traffic Controller (AW) Patrick Mick, the command Drug & Alcohol Abuse Program advisor (DAPA) for NSA Naples. That may seem to be an increase from 2011, when 21 infractions occurred throughout the entire year, but the numbers can be misleading, Mick said. Because DUI checkpoints have tripled since 2010 and

doubled since last year, one would expect DUI numbers to increase by a similar amount, Mick said. Instead, the number of DUI infractions has remained relatively steady, indicating that drunk driving incidents have actually gone down by about two-thirds, he said. Mick stresses that it’s not just the check points that are making a difference. “It’s sailors taking care of each other,” said Mick. Capt. Scott Gray, the commanding officer of NSA Naples, has also started incentive programs to encourage sailors to make the right choice. If the command goes 90 days DUI-free, then its sailors are authorized a day off. If the command goes 180 days DUI-free, then its sailors get two days off. “Bottom line is to have a plan, get that designated driver, and if you drink, don’t drive,” said Hopes.

Periodic Health Assessment remains an important part of sailors’ medical readiness By MC1 (SW/AW) Felicito Rustique, Navy Public Affairs Support ElementEast Detachment Europe

The Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) is an annual medical and dental check-up sailors are required to complete during their birth month each year to ensure their individual medical readiness. At Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino, the medical staff has created a fourstep process to ensure everybody gets their PHA done in a timely manner. “Before, there used to be a five-year, periodic physical examination that was required,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Amia Stec, one of two PHA coordinators at Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino. “Then, a ‘Birth Month Review’ (BMR) was created, and later in 2007, the BMR became the PHA, which is what we have today.” Stec also explained that sailors should get their PHAs done during their birth month, since this is the best way for everyone to remember the requirement. Doing this during the individual’s birth month also helps prevent an overload of everyone trying to get PHAs done when the semi-annual, Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) takes place. The PHA is important because not only does it ensure individual medical readiness, but it also allows a sailor to participate in the PFA, which requires a current PHA to be on record, said Lt. Jennifer Maguire, the department head for community

health at Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino. “The end goal is to make sure everybody’s records are up to date, and I think our guys go above and beyond to make sure this happens,” said Maguire. The four steps for the PHA at Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino involve signing up at the clinic’s front desk; completing and printing out a Health Risk Appraisal (HRA) form online; checking out one’s medical record and completing a check off sheet for different areas such as immunizations, dental, and optometry; and lastly, a consultation in person with a corpsman or other health care providers. It is during the consultations that Hospitalman Jamie Kozlowski, the other PHA coordinator at Naval Branch Health Clinic Capodichino, believes sailors should address any medical concerns they have. Sailors should not feel shy about doing so, Kozlowski said. “The consultation is a sailor’s chance to tell us any concerns and get them off their chest,” said Kozlowski. “We want to work with the sailor to get the right referrals and help them, whether it’s in areas such as smoking, nutrition, stress, injury prevention, or anything else regarding women’s and men’s health.” Stec also commented that the three common issues sailors have are high-blood pressure, high cholesterol, and high body mass index, but these problems can be avoided. “It’s easier to prevent problems now then to treat them

FFSC Tip of the week: Retirement planning From the Fleet and Family Support Center

o you want to be a millionaire? Most people will say yes, of course! Do you think you could be a millionaire on a military salary? Most people would say, “No way;” however, it is possible. If a 21-year-old sailor saved and invested $3,000 a year or $250 a month for only six years and quit investing, by the age of 65 that person could have $1,047,608. If that same person waited until the age of 31 and saved $3,000 a year for six years, the investment would only total $403,898. A ten year delay in savings could cost $600,000. These scenarios use a rate of return of 10 percent, which is consistent with the average annual compounded rate of return from 1926 through 2008. So, do you want to be a millionaire? Start early and save often. Get help and ideas at the Savings and Investing class at Fleet and Family Support Center. Call 081-811-6372 today for schedules and registration.

What’s behind domestic violence? By Kathleen Williams, LCSW, FFSC Family Advocacy Representative

atterers use emotional, psychological, economic and physical abuse as ways of controlling victims. Abuse is not caused by stress, anger, or alcohol or other drug involvement. Many people find it difficult to understand why people abuse their partners. This may be why, when we hear excuses like, “he had a bad day,” “she lost her temper,” or “he was drunk and out of control,” we often accept them as viable reasons why the attack occurred. Most people who use alcohol or other drugs do not abuse their partners. And many people who never use alcohol or other drugs abuse their part-

B

ners. While it is true that perpetrators of domestic violence are sometimes under the influence of alcohol or other drugs when the episode occurs, domestic abuse and alcohol or other drug abuse are two separate problems − neither is caused by the other. Anyone who abuses another person while under the influence of alcohol or another drug needs help for both problems. Disagreements develop from time to time in relationships. Domestic violence is not a disagreement. It is a whole pattern of behaviors used by one partner to establish and maintain power and control over the other. These behaviors can become more frequent and intense over time. Emerging research and understanding of domestic

abuse also recognizes that in some relationships both partners use violence. In these cases, the violence is not necessarily motivated by the need to control the partner, but rather begins as a disagreement that turns angry and then becomes violent. This pattern of domestic abuse is perpetrated equally by both men and women. No one theory or factor explains all types of abuse; however, research strongly suggests that men who witness violence as a child are more likely to commit violence toward their female partners as adults. For women, the research finds that violence is more often motivated by self defense, fear, or defense of their children, rather than a learned behavior from childhood.

Alex Trebek and ‘Jeopardy!’ crew look for fresh talent in Naples By MC2 (SW/AW) John Stratton, NSA Naples Public Affairs

conic game show host Alex Trebek and the "Jeopardy!" crew took time out of their busy schedules to visit Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Oct. 6 in search of talent for the game show's upcoming "Salute to the Military" competition. Trebek's USO tour stop at NSA Naples consisted of an autograph signing, a mock "Jeopardy!" game, a tour of the base and area attractions, and a chance for service members and their spouses to be contestants on the show. Laura Hitchcock, a Navy spouse, was first in line to meet Trebek. "I've been watching Alex and 'Jeopardy!' since I was a little girl," she said. "Meeting him will make my year, even my decade." A long-time USO supporter, Trebek is a recipient of the USO Bob Hope Award for his achievements in entertainment and commitment to service members. This visit to Naples kicks off his 13th USO tour since 1987. "I have always been a passionate supporter of our men and women in uniform," said Trebek. "There is no better feeling that showing our troops just how much we care." Trebek was not the only one from the show visiting the city of Naples. A member of the Clue Crew, a team of roving correspondents that record various clues from around the globe, also came along for the ride. Since the Clue Crew's inception in

I

2001, the team has recorded clues on all seven continents, including in 280 different cities spanning 44 countries. "This is my eighth season with the 'Jeopardy!' Clue Crew and my second USO tour," said Kelly Miyahara. "I absolutely love Italy and to be here in support of our servicemen and women is super exciting." For those service members and their families that did not get the chance to make the morning's festivities, Trebek took to the Naples High School football field to flip the coin for the team’s homecoming game amid a very grateful crowd. “Jeopardy!” is the winner of a 2011 Peabody award and 30 Emmy awards, including the 2012 Emmy for Outstanding Game/Audience Participation Program. It was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for winning the most awards of any TV game show. Entering its 29th season, the series is the No. 1-rated quiz show in syndication, with 25 million viewers each week. Trebek and crew are scheduled to visit bases in Italy and Germany through Oct. 13 in search of contestants to appear on the show. "Naples is our first stop," said Oname Thompson, communications manager for USO. "We're very excited to kick things off here, and hoping throughout our travels to find as much diversity as we can in order to showcase all the branches of service and the wonderful things you guys do. We're here to bring you a touch of home."

Club Beyond: answers to frequently asked questions By Arturo Paulino, Club Beyond Community Director NSA Naples Religious Ministries Department Q: What exactly is Club Beyond? A: Club Beyond is a non-denominational group for kids in grades 7 through 12 that focuses on creating environments in which friends, fun and faith can connect. Q: Right… does that mean this is a "religious" program? A: Yes and no. It is religious in the sense that it is part of our chaplain’s department; however, its scope is to serve the community at large. The program includes children of our religious services attendees, and it goes beyond (pun intended) to serve all the kids in our community. Q: Is this a Protestant or a Catholic program? A: It is a community program. It includes kids of our Protestant community and children who ascribe to the Catholic faith, in addition to kids with no particular church affiliation. This is a non-proselytizing community youth program for the benefit of all of our families. Q: So, how is Club Beyond different than any other pro-youth program we already have on base? A: On top of our recreational activities, games and trips, what sets Club Beyond apart is the promotion of positive values and morals among our youth. We unashamedly believe one of the many byproducts of following God is strengthening relationships, forming resilient character and fostering communal responsibility. Q: And how exactly do you plan on doing this? A: Through our people. Our people are the base of our ministry. We are seeking to train and empower adults who not only direct games and skits, but have the heart and the will to love kids. Let's face it, kids get bored easily. Back in my time it was Sega, then Nintendo, then Super Nintendo, then Wii, then Xbox, and now it's Xbox Live (I think). The question is not whether we have the latest toys to help our kids to stay out of trouble, but whether have adults who care enough to get involved. Adults with Club Beyond are ones who will know your son and daughter by name, who are willing to accept the kids as they truly are, and yet love them enough to challenge them and to push them to reach their fullest potential. Our people and our faith are the difference. Q: So, do you need any help? A: Yes! I am looking for adults who are willing to love and work with our kids. Don't worry, we will do a good background check on you as a freebie. You only need to come to one of our events and meet with me to get the process started. Q: When does Club Beyond meet? A: Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the Support Site Fellowship Hall (by the library). Q: How can we contact you? A: Reach me by e-mail at apaulino@clubbeyond.org or at 081-811-4603. You can also stop by my office at the Support Site chapel.

During National Fire Prevention Week, work on your family’s emergency plan By Jeff Arter, American Red Cross Disaster Action Team chair

During National Fire Prevention Week, which continues through Oct. 13, the American Red Cross is focused on promoting fire safety and prevention. It should be noted that we all should practice fire safety all year long. The Red Cross’ theme during this year’s Fire Prevention Week is, “Have Two Ways Out.” The Red Cross recommends that families and households across America develop a fire escape plan and practice it several times throughout the year with all members of the household. Each occupant should know at least two ways to escape from every room in their house and have a designated place at which they can all meet outside their house in case of a fire. Many fire hazards go undetected by occupants simply because they do not take some time and follow a few steps to fireproof their home. Some other safety steps we can follow are: – In case of a fire, follow the escape plan that your family has developed. – Once you are out of the house, stay out and call emergecny personnel. On base, the number to dial is 911, while off-base the correct number for base emergency services is 081-5684911. To call host nation services in Italy, dial 115 for fire, 112 for police and 118 for an ambulance. – Install smoke alarms on each level of your home and inside bedrooms. Replace the batteries at least once a year. Perfom monthly tests of the smoke alarm by pushing the test button that is located on the alarm. – Prepare and have handy a family emergency kit that you can grab on your way out of the home. You can go to the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org/prepare/location/home-family/prevent-home-fires for further information on home fire safety. The local Naples American Red Cross Disaster Action Team is available to assist the community in coping with a home fire. For more information, stop by the Naples American Red Cross office in Admin II or contact the Naples American Red Cross at arcnaples@redcross.org. You can also email Jeff Arter, Disaster Action Team chair, at jeff.arter@redcross.org.

If you are the victim of a crime, report the incident to Security Dispatch at 081-568-5638.

Boys’ volleyball By Cynthia Fuerst and Peter Nagafuchi he Wildcat boys showed how much they have improved since the beginning of the season when they faced their archrivals, the Aviano Saints, during homecoming weekend. Though they lost both of the weekend matches, their performance against this perennially strong team was impressive. Though Aviano won 3-1 Friday, the Wildcats boys finally got one set out of these very strong league opponents, which is a testimony to their fast-increasing skills. The battle continued on Saturday and the Wildcats put up an even stronger fight. They took two sets of the match but ultimately fell to the Saints 3-2. Coach Peter Nagafuchi noted outstanding performances by freshman DJ Longstaat and junior setter Austin Bain. Junior Josh Hensy served up 23 points in 5 games. Junior Sam Murdock logged 5 kills and senior Alex Rushing and junior Sam Thomas both recorded 3 blocks.

Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. On Oct. 6, Naples fans had the rare chance to see the Naples cross country team cruising around base. For homecoming, the team raced at Naples High School at the Support Site, instead of at the usual course at Carney Park. The team definitely put on a good show for the spectators. The middle school students started things off with a 1.5 mile race. Eighth-grader Ethan Hejl finished first for the boys with a time of 8:28, while seventh-grader Grace Vandelac led the female finishers with a time of 9:17. Then the women’s varsity team raced Aviano, last year’s runner-up in the European championship tournament. Destiny Mora continued her unbeaten streak, with teammate Caroline Bracken following close behind. They both outpaced Aviano front runner Shelby McHugh with times of 20:37 and 21:42. Isabella Lucy finished fourth overall with a time of 22:13, her best so far this season. After Aviano’s Claudia Howe finished in fifth place, it was all Naples. Alex Guinn (22:26), Amber Sheline (22:30), Jessica Poluhowich (22:35),

and Isabela Melendez (23:13) took spots six through nine to seal another Naples victory. The Naples women remain undefeated this season. The men’s team showed remarkable improvement and growth this week. Four out of the top five Naples finishers had personal best times. Jacob Gray continued his own unbeaten streak, winning in 17:39. He had teammates Bret Baldwin and Evan Bradley on his heels; they finished second and third with times of 18:01 and 18:02. Aviano’s Joshua Coudright ran tough to prevent a sweep, placing fourth with a time of 18:09. Luca Melendez (18:10), Sam Chaston (18:12), Matt Collins (19:37) and Dylan Kessler (20:22) closed out the top seven Naples finishers. Coach Chip Noonan was thrilled with the way the men performed. “We had our one to five finishers in within 33 seconds of each other with an average time of 18:00,” Noonan said. “That’s one of the best spreads we’ve had in years. If the team continues to run like this, we will be very tough to beat at Europeans.” The cross country team travels to Vicenza this weekend. The European Championship Meet will be held in Baumholder Oct. 27.
