‘May I Kiss You?’ a novel approach to sexual assault awareness training By MCSN Erik Luebke, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe

aval Support Activity (NSA) Naples will host “May I Kiss You?” and “Help! My Teen is Dating” training July 26 and 27. The workshops will be led by Mike Domitrz, founder and executive director of the Date Safe Project, Inc. According to the Date Safe Project website, The “May I Kiss You?” workshop emphasizes the importance of asking permission and obtaining consent before engaging in sexual activity, using humor to drive the message home. Meanwhile, the “Help! My Teen is Dating” workshop provides tools needed for parents to approach their children about dating and romance, helping build respect and ensure that teens know the consequences of bad behavior. “Mr. Domitrz is presenting three different topics during his visit here,” said Maggie Lynn, information and referral specialist at Fleet and Family Support Center. “The first course, ‘May I Kiss You?,’ is an in-depth look at the realities of dating and intimacy.” In “May I Kiss You?,” Domitrz uses candid advice, real-life scenarios and interactive exercises as an innovative way to approach dating and romance, while building respect and heightening awareness of sexual misconduct and assault. The second class, called “Help! My Teen is Dating,” offers “real solutions to tough conversations,” said Lynn. “This workshop is for parents and shares suggestions on talking to teenagers about intimacy, dating, self-respect, self-esteem, the dangers of alcohol and other issues related to safe dating,” said Lynn. The third and final course is the “May I Kiss You? Training the Trainer” workshop. Participants will learn how to handle tough training situations, including addressing real concerns about dating and intimacy as well as how to create a balance of careful and effective use of humor versus hard-hitting questions.

Loaner Locker program helps newcomers to Naples settle in By MC3 Josh Bennett, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe

The Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) at Naval Support Activity Naples offers the Loaner Locker Program to assist newcomers who are waiting for their household goods to arrive. The Loaner Locker program temporarily provides small household items to those with Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders who have yet to receive their household goods shipment. The program keeps itself well-stocked with items that personnel and their families may need while waiting for their household goods to arrive. The list of items available includes blankets, irons, coffee makers, silverware and more. The FFSC doesn’t put stipulations on how

many items people can and can’t take. “We had one person that came in and only took a whisk, because that was all he needed,” said Maggie Lynn, information and referral specialist at the FFSC. The program lends out the items for a period of 60 days, but the FFSC is willing to extend past the 60 days if necessary. “We understand that household goods don’t always arrive on time, so we like to stay flexible,” said Maria Sommese, relocation specialist at the FFSC. When situations come up that lead to service members needing the provided items longer, the FFSC staff requests that borrowers call the FFSC office to inform them of the situation. No extra paperwork is needed to extend past the 60 days.

Lynn added the program isn’t only for service members just now arriving, but also for those who are leaving. Individuals who have already shipped their household goods are similarly eligible to use the Loaner Locker.

The Loaner Locker’s busiest time of year is during late spring and early summer, when the highest number of people are “PCSing.” For more information on the Loaner Locker Program, contact the FFSC at 081-811-6372.

Captain’s Corner

Summer is halfway over, and many of you have taken or plan to take trips within Italy and across Europe. Traveling is fun, and it’s one of the highlights of an overseas tour, but it’s also inherently dangerous as you drive long distances and explore unfamiliar areas. Please plan your trips wisely. Whether it’s breaking up a long drive instead of trying to make it straight through to Copenhagen in one day, or hiring a tour guide to show you the sights of a city you’re unfamiliar with, prior planning will help ensure you and your traveling companions make it home safely. We’re moving into the Italian vacation season as the month of August creeps up on us and Ferragosto sends many of us off to the beach or elsewhere. There may be situations, however, where lines are a bit longer or things seem to get done a little slower than they normally do. I ask for patience as you interact with my personnel who provide various services on base. It’s that time of the year again: Permanent Change of Station season is upon us, and we need to ensure that we make the transition as easy as possible for our new personnel. I want to remind supervisors to choose sponsors wisely. Make sure the individual you pick represents your department well and that he or she matches up with the incoming service member as closely as possible. In other words, don’t have a single service member who resides in the BEQ sponsor a sailor who is bringing his or her family and living on the economy. Additionally, remember to have sponsors sign up new arrivals for Area Orientation, which is mandatory for all new personnel at NSA Naples. We all remember first getting here and the hand-holding we needed (or didn’t get). Sponsors ought to be dragging their incoming personnel around to ensure they get a taste of Italy and all the information they need to live over here. The USO and Information, Tours and Travel have a host of tours aimed at getting you out of the Navy Lodge and into the local community to see some of the amazing sights in and around Naples. Part of taking care of your sailors is giving them adequate time off to accomplish all the things they need done and make sure their family is settled. Volunteers are needed everywhere, so look into the many organizations we have so you can help build our community, make new friends and have fun. There are plenty of new people starting to check in, so now’s a great time to welcome them and emphasize the countless opportunities that await them. We are currently looking for volunteers for the Navy Ball committee; if you are interested please contact Lt. Yee at 081-568-5450. Lastly, whether you skateboard, bike, scooter or roller blade, I would like to remind you to wear a helmet. For those in doubt, if it has wheels and it’s not a car, wear a helmet (strollers excluded). This rule applies at all NSA installations (i.e., Carney Park, Capodichino and the Support Site), and to people of all ages. Have a great weekend!

Vacuum and pressure washing equipment to require pre-paid cards; card giveaway July 25 The Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Auto/Wood Skills Center at the Support Site will soon change how customers pay for vacuums and pressurewash equipment. The Auto/Wood Skills Center is removing the current token system that is used to operate the vacuum and pressure wash, and will install a new chip-card distributor. Customers will be able to purchase a chip-card for $4 and load as much credit on the card as they would like. To inaugurate and present this new system, the MWR Auto/Wood Skills Center will offer the first 50

customers who come into the center Wednesday, July 25 a new chip-card with $6.00 credit already loaded (a $10 value) for only $5. To use the new system, customers can insert the card into the appropriate slot to operate the pressure-wash and vacuum equipment. For each use, $2 will automatically be deducted from the credit on the card. While the vacuum and pressure-wash equipment will start using the chip cards July 25, the automatic car wash will continue to use tokens as before. As necessary or desired, the cost of the chip-card and any credit remaining can be promptly refunded during regular operational hours at the Auto/Wood Skills Center.

Alumni representatives sought for the 2012 Naples High School College Night The Naval Support Activity Naples school liaison officer and the Naples High School Guidance Office are seeking community members to represent their alma maters Wednesday, October 10 for this year’s College Night. The event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at Naples High School. The support of alumni representatives from the community is essential to the success of Naples College Night. ‘King of Mozzarella’ arrested for ties to organized crime Giuseppe Mandara, known as the King of Mozzarella, was arrested Tuesday by Italian police. The Mandara Group is a worldwide exporter of buffalo mozzarella, selling its products to large chains in Europe, Japan

and the United States. Giuseppe Mandara, who is a third-generation mozzarella producer, is suspected of links to the notorious Casalesi clan of the Camorra organized crime group. Police seized assets worth €100 million (about $954 million). The charges against the Mandara Group include misleading consumers after the company falsely produced batches of mozzarella cheese with cheaper cow’s milk instead of the buffalo milk that is required by law to keep its protected origin status (DOP).

Fires burn in Italian national park On Tuesday, fire broke out in five different places at the Pollino National Park. More than 600 hectares of forest burned, while the flames approached a hill that is home to the famous Bosnian Pine trees. According to investigators, the fires were caused by criminal organizations. In 2007, more than 6,000 hectares of forest in the park burned. Meanwhile, fires destroyed several houses on Sardinia island, forcing 800 hotel guests and locals to escape the northeast of the island. This year, forest officials have reported a 76 percent increase over last year’s fires.

The Marina Corricella is the oldest port on the island of Procida, filled with brightly-painted houses and fishing boats. (Photos by Melissa Kabukuru)

Procida: An island of quiet beauty Story and photos by Melissa Kabukuru, Panorama editor voice on the intercom announces the stop for Procida, and most people remain in their seats. Though I’m on a ferry with hundreds of people, only about 40 of us get off at the island of Procida, much to my relief. Most are continuing on to Ischia for the day. The smallest of the three islands of the Gulf of Naples, Procida isn’t known for glamorous shops like its sister island Capri, or thermal spas like nearby Ischia. Rather, it is a place of understated beauty still steeped in the ritual of the daily catch, where you are more likely to see fishermen and tanned Italians docking their boats than mobs of foreign tourists. Even in the height of summer, the small crowd that exits the ferry quickly evaporates, dispersing throughout the quaint streets of the island. Procida’s small size means that I needn’t immediately hop on a bus to reach my destination; rather, I can walk to some of the main attractions. As I stroll toward the Terra Murata, a part of the island surrounded by medieval walls, I see no sign of my fellow ferry travelers — only local women hanging laundry, young men riding bikes and elderly gentlemen smoking outside coffee bars. Reaching the Terra Murata on foot is made simple by following signs for the Abbazia di San Michele Arcangelo, one of the area’s major landmarks. The monastery and church are closed when I arrive (hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m.), but ascending the 90 meters to get there has yielded beautiful views of the surrounding sea,

memorable sights: the fishing village of La Corricella. The Marina Corricella consists of dozens of houses constructed in typical Procida style, tightly packed and often stacked on top of one other. What stands out the most, however, are the colors. Each house is painted a different shade to distinguish it from its neighbor. The result is a marina of myriad hues, which makes for a picturesque place to wander on foot or stop for lunch. The award-winning film “Il Postino” (“The Postman”) was set here, helping catapult the small fishing village to international fame. You’ll find the staircase leading down to the dock if you follow signs for “Marina Corricella.” From here, my next stop is one of Procida’s beaches. While there are several beaches on the island, I choose to head to Chiaiolella, perhaps Procida’s most popular stretch of sand. Beach bars and restaurants line the shore; most of them rent umbrellas and beach chairs. The price for mine is €13, but the payoff is the chance to walk a beach consisting of fine sand that is friendly to the feet, devoid of rocks and pebbles. As I wade chest-deep in the water, the sea is clear enough that I can look down and see my feet sinking into the sand below. This helps me let go of fears that I might step on a rock or a sea creature, luring me out deeper into the ocean for

Perhaps the most popular of Procida’s beaches is Chiaiolella, which is lined with restaurants and beach bars. a swim. I choose to leave Chiaolella at about the same time as the rest of the beach-goers, so I brace myself for a crowded, uncomfortable bus ride back to the port. But even during the mass exodus from the beach, the buses still have a little bit of breathing room, making the ride pass quickly. While each of the islands in the Gulf of Naples has things to offer travelers, in July and August Procida is a more tranquil alternative to Capri or Ischia, presenting beautiful views, sparkling seas and old world charm. What you probably won’t find is the din of hundreds of other tourists also searching for the perfect island getaway.

GETTING AROUND Ferries to Procida depart from Naples’ Molo Beverello and Mergellina ports, as well as from Pozzuoli. From the port area of Procida, you can reach the Terra Murata and La Corricella by taking the C2 bus line, which departs every 40 minutes. Get off at San Rocco for La Corricella, and the final stop, Piazza delle Armi, for Terra Murata. To reach Chiaiolella, take the L1 bus and get off at the final stop by the beaches. This bus runs every 20 minutes. Taxis and boat rental services are also available.

THE FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT PROCESS (Noon - 3 p.m.) Want to land a federal job? This workshop focuses on the key steps to gaining federal employment. Chief of naval personnel talks FFSC helps people make readiness with Naples sailors choices to manage anger By MCSN Erik Luebke, Navy Public Affairs Support Element-East Detachment Europe

By MC1 (EXW/DV) Jack Georges, Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia Public Affairs

The chief of naval personnel stressed the chief of naval operations’ three tenets of “Warfighting First, Operate Forward and Be Ready” during an all-hands call at Naval Support Activity Naples July 12. Vice Adm. Scott Van Buskirk emphasized Naval Personnel Command’s efforts to manage a sustainable and resilient force composed of the right number of sailors with the right skills for the job, while at the same time attracting, recruiting and retaining the highest quality personnel. “I don’t think there is a better example of the chief of naval operations’ three tenets of ‘Warfighting First, Operate Forward and Be Ready’ than all of you here today. You are doing it all in probably the most dynamic theater in the world,” said Van Buskirk. While acknowledging the valuable work of service members in the region, Van Buskirk said the three tenets must also guide the Navy as it considers future challenges. “One of the areas we have a challenge has to do with jobs on ships that require very specific critical skills. We have some gaps at sea for some very technical ratings,” said Van Buskirk. In response to these vacant positions, the Navy has sought to provide incentives to sailors with critical skills who return to sea duty early. Incentives include increased opportunities for retention as well as advantages when choosing new assignments. “I think you may even see some more sea-duty incentive pay available for more ratings too,” said Van Buskirk. Filling sea-duty billets that require critical skills enables the Navy to effectively meet the chief

of naval operations’ sailing directions. Van Buskirk said the key is to find the right mix of skill sets, sea and shore billets and to continue providing incentives for sailors to select sea-duty billets. During his trip, Van Buskirk also visited Naval Station Rota, where he continued to interact with sailors to hear what issues are

FFSC Tip of the Week: Social media and families From the Fleet and Family Support Center

With summer break underway, you might find it challenging to keep your kids occupied. There’s always the temptation to let technology fill the void, but technology isn’t the best babysitter. Kids’ online usage increases over the summer, and so does the risk of cyber threats. Parents play an integral role in their children’s digital lives. Use the advice below, provided by the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), to start a conversation with your kids about how to safely surf the internet. It's never too early to start establishing media guidelines for your family. A recent survey by security software maker AVG shows that more children between the ages of 2 and 5 know how to operate a Smartphone application than know how to tie their shoes. To teach smart media habits, use media devices together and talk about what you see, hear and read. Even if you choose to use an Internet filter, help kids find positive and safe sites online. There are many websites designed specifically for school-age children that incorporate strong safety features to facilitate safe play free from inappropriate content or contact. Ensure that any social media sites used by your school-age child offer flexible parental controls that allow you to set limits on whom they contact and when. Start a conversation about Facebook. Encourage your teen to use strong privacy settings, and remind them that they should only "friend" people online who they would "friend" in real life. Even a private post can be forwarded by an unscrupulous online acquaintance. Set rules about what's appropriate to post, both for photos and other updates. Ask your teen to reflect on how others, both now and in the future, will view their online life. If you wouldn't let children have an unsupervised play date, they aren't ready to be online by themselves. The skills they bring to online worlds are the same ones they have in real life. Remind your younger children that online rules of conduct are the same as real life rules: if it's not OK to say to someone's face, it's not OK in cyberspace. For more tips on social network and online safety, stop by the FFSC or call the front desk at 081-811-6372.

The Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC) has begun using a new course model for its anger management classes, stretching the training over multiple sessions instead of confining it to a single afternoon. The course, called “Choices — Managing Your Anger,” meets Wednesdays at the Support Site Fleet and Family Support Center, and is intended to help people resolve anger or other emotional issues that could cause a problem in their personal or professional lives. “The idea of making the class more than just one day has been going on since December,” said Mark Johnson, a clinical counselor at the FFSC and the instructor for the anger management class. “We’ve offered an anger management class for years that was normally just a two-hour, one-day class. The new course was originally four weeks, but I shortened it to three to make it easier for people to attend.” Each class is kept to a small number of people to help increase participation and make sure no one feels left out. “The class size is erratic month-to-month,” said Johnson. “Sometimes we only have three or four people, other months we have upwards of eight to ten.” During the course of the class, Johnson focuses on reducing the impact of things that could lead to anger or other emotional issues, such as stress. “If you can manage your stress, it’s easier to manage your anger and other emotions,” said Johnson. “We talk about how it’s not situations and people that make you angry, but how you think about them. The good news there is that you can change what you think. You can’t change the people or situation, but you can change how you think and feel about it and not let it bother you.” Other topics discussed during the class are meditative techniques to relax and focus on the present, which can help calm someone down and enable him or her to see the situation clearly. Johnson also talks about the consequences of actions by using clips from the movie Anger Management as an extreme example. Jail time and fines are not uncommon when people commit violent or destructive acts fueled by anger. The class takes place in a classroom inside the FFSC office, which is located on the second floor of the Navy Lodge building at the NSA Naples Support Site. The only requirement to attend the course is a valid government I.D. card to access the base. “There really aren’t any specific requirements to attend the course, just a government I.D. and the desire to better yourself,” said Johnson. “We help anyone who comes to us learn to overcome their anger and look at their stressors in a positive light, and hopefully improve their life.” For more information on the class or if you are interested in attending, call the Fleet and Family Support Center’s main line at 081-811-6372.

The F fund allows the investor to earn rates higher than the G fund, savings accounts, or CDs, while still maintaining a very low level of risk. Since its inception in 1988, only twice has it produced negative annual returns, once at negative 3 percent and once at less than negative 1 percent. Both times, however, it was followed by returns in the double digits. The F fund focuses exclusively on fixed income bonds. A bond, if you remember, is a contract to repay borrowed money at a set interest rate by a set date. The rates and maturity dates are set and the returns are fixed, hence the name: fixed income. For bonds in general, their risk is tied to their interest rates. A higher rate indicates a riskier investment. One can buy bonds from a newly formed corporation that is in dire need of cash and receive a higher return than buying from a well established corporation that is not desperately in need of money. The risk lies in the possibility of the company going bankrupt and defaulting on your payment. Imagine if you loan your brother $100 and he promises to pay you back $110. If he loses his job, you aren’t going to see any of that money despite his promise. In the same way, if the company goes under, you may not get all of your money back, nor do you get the interest. A good rule of thumb when determining the risk of a bond is to look at the return percentage the loaner is receiving. Like all investing, higher risk will lead to a higher return. A bond offering 3 percent is probably much safer than a bond offering 8 percent. Be wary of bonds offering high interest rates that claim minimal risk. One can also look at the credit rating of the bond. Investment-grade bonds are safer and more reliable than non-investment grade bonds (also called high-yield bonds or junk bonds). The rating scale varies depending on the rating authority, but generally the scale runs from AAA to D. Investment grade bonds cannot fall below a rating of BBB-, which is still relatively high on the scale. The F fund does not deal in any non-investment grade bonds. This ensures your money will not get used in high risk situations that could put your retirement fund in jeopardy. If the investor wishes to maintain a comparatively safe fund, but seeks a higher payout than the G fund, this is a prudent choice. The F fund is an excellent home for the majority of one’s retirement fund during uncertain economic times and volatile stock markets. It is also an appropriate choice after retirement begins and monthly contributions have stopped. Historically, this fund has remained well above inflation and produced solid returns. To further alleviate concerns, split the assets between the G and F fund. Next time, we will investigate the C fund. Happy savings!

A trip back in time — that was what more than 80 sailors and family members from the Gaeta and USS Mt. Whitney community had the chance to experience earlier this month. As part of its intercultural offerings, the Fleet and Family Support Center Gaeta offered a walk along the historic trail to the top of Monte Orlando. The tour allowed participants to visit remnants of archeological sites dating back as far as Roman times and from as recently as 100 years ago. Local experts and Gaeta city cultural representatives collaborated to guide and provide assistance, assuring another safe and successful community relations event. The walk started early in the morning outside the base and sloped gradually up toward the top of Monte Orlando (171 meters above sea level). On the top there is the Lucio Munazio Planco Mausoleum, a circular Roman tomb that dates back to 22 BC. Munazio Planco, a Roman consul, was one of Julius Caesar’s generals, and chose Monte Orlando to build a luxury villa. The historic trail then led the group to the military complex made up of powder magazines, bastions, trenches and artificial tunnels built in different periods. Over the course of time, this site has been violated and devastated many times, but is now preserved along with the rest of the Monte Orlando hill and promontory as part of a protected natural park. The absolute highlight of the day was a special visit to the battery of Monte Orlando. Recently opened to public, the battery is a superior military construction built at the end of the 1800s for the defense of Gaeta's part in the Triple Alliance, a military pact that existed between Italy, Germany and Austria. It's also known as the “Annular Battery” because of its ring-like shape. It is equipped with 18 pads connected by an underground walkway, which coverage 360-degree provided against enemy fire. Each pad contained a gun or howitzer, and had two pulley hoists for ammunition and other uses in combat. Following the Gaeta FFSC tradition of pursuing off-the-beaten-path cultural destinations, the participants got to visit an area that is normally off-limits to general public. Equipped with flashlights, they explored dark tunnels, rooms and secret passageways in the belly of the mountain. Mr. Salvatore Magliozzi, the head engineer who led

the restoration and opening of the lost tunnels after decades of degradation, made a special effort to share Italian history with the American community members by personally guiding them through the battery. This intercultural relations event is part of a series of new initiatives

aimed at helping the sailors stationed aboard the USS Mt. Whitney experience Italian history, culture and sightseeing. These events allow Mt. Whitney sailors and their family members to explore Italy in a more tangible way, providing photos and memories that will last a lifetime.

Referral management at U.S. Naval Hospital Naples By Cmdr. Kendra Manning, NC, USN, Director for Healthcare Business The U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) is committed to being your medical home away from home. We pride ourselves in being able to take care of you and your family’s medical needs, but sometimes we may encounter a limitation in our services. In that case, we rely on the local medical community for that care. For example, we do not have a cardiologist on staff. If a patient requires an echocardiogram for further diagnosis, we would rely on a local Italian provider out in town for that service. Rest assured, we do not expect patients to navigate the Italian healthcare system alone. That is where the Referral Management Center (RMC) at the Naval Hospital comes in to assist patients. Once your primary care manager enters the network consult request into our system, we ask that you stop by the RMC to fill out a pre-appointment questionnaire. This way we ensure we have the most current contact information for you in order to coordinate your appointment. The consult request will be reviewed by the RMC staff and processed accordingly. For TRICARE Prime beneficiaries, the RMC will seek prior authorization from International SOS. TRICARE has partnered with International SOS to identify the best local providers and facilities and develop a network of licensed, qualified physicians in areas around overseas military treatment facilities. This process takes approximately three to five business days. NonTRICARE Prime patients should check with their individual health insurance companies to see if there are any specific requirements that must be followed to avoid additional out-of-pocket expenses. Your appointment will be scheduled by the RMC staff, which will use our Preferred Provider Network. You will then receive a phone call to verify the date of your appointment and the time you are expected to report to the RMC for transportation to your visit. Any further instructions will be given to you at that time to better prepare you for your visit. This may include the estimated cost in euros that will need to be paid to the Italian provider up front if you are not a TRICARE Prime beneficiary. Most of the time, a patient liaison will accompany you on your visit to provide translation assistance as needed. Since there are many network providers who speak English, you may only require a driver to take you to the appointment. The driver can provide very basic, non-clinical translation for you. If for any reason during your appointment you feel like you need to speak to a patient liaison, don’t hesitate to let the driver know. A patient liaison can always be contacted to provide translation services by phone. If the network provider prescribes you medication, the prescription will have to be filled at a local farmacia (the Italian word for “pharmacy”). The RMC staff will guide you on where to go to get it filled. If you are a TRICARE beneficiary, make sure to get the prescription stamped by the RMC staff first, so that you can take advantage of the cashless/claimless process with a TRICARE-approved farmacia. After your appointment, the staff member accompanying you will ensure that any paperwork from the Italian provider gets translated into English and entered into your record. This process can take up to 10 business days for routine visits. Urgent referrals are handled as per medical necessity, and results that are not within normal limits are translated immediately for our patients and physicians. You should make a follow-up appointment with your primary care manager to review your results. The Referral Management Center is located on the ground floor of the hospital in room 1319. The phone number is 081-811-6331/4141. The staff is here to assist you, answer your questions and concerns, and be your partner in the referral process.

Cemeteries in naples contain chapels that house the dead, which are cared for and decorated by the living. (Photos by Melissa Kabukuru)

Cemetery tour shows a different side of Naples By Marica Staten Information, Tours and Travel Teen Hire oing on guided tours to any place here in Italy or Europe is a great way to experience and know the culture and history. But you don’t have to travel far from Naples to get the history or culture. I recently went on a tour with Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Information Tours and Travel to the cemeteries of Naples. The tour, named Walk in the City of the Dead, was an interesting way to understand the Neapolitan culture and to learn a little bit of history. Even though walking around in the heat doesn’t sound fun, it's a nice way to get to know another side of the beautiful city of Naples. Outside of the gates of the cemeteries is the rough hustle and bustle of the city, which I’m sure a lot of us have had the joy to experience. But inside the gates is like another whole city — a city within a city. It’s very clean, quiet, quaint and neat, with much respect in the air. And the Neapolitans seem to like to keep it that way. There are lots of mini-houses or condominiums that house the remains of their dearly departed loved ones along a street. It actually feels kind of like you’re in a very spooky town. The Neapolitans clean these mini-houses or hire someone else to do it, and they decorate them with flowers, pictures, or other designs along the walls or door, just as they would their own living homes. Its fun to see the extravagant ways these mini- houses are built, and see the way the Neapolitans go all out for their loved ones. We saw three different cemeteries on this tour: one of them was among the first Naples cemeteries, which was built in 1700s overlooking the city. It is still in use today. We then ventured to the Old, New and Newer cemeteries, which are remarkably close to Capodichino. While seeing

G

all this, the tour guide, Aldo, helped me understand the history, culture and respect that are given to the dead in Naples. His explanations and stories helped me to understand the high place of honor that the dead hold for the Neapolitans. Aldo taught us about some of the symbols and history of the Roman Catholic religion, about how much

culture the cemeteries have, and how important they are to the Neapolitans. We saw a family arranging flowers for their loved ones that passed away, and I realized that this tour is especially important. It showed me how much respect the locals have for their deceased loved ones, and how important it is for everyone to show respect for their loved ones. It is not enough to show you care after they have died, but to show you care while they’re still alive. Learning about this part of Naples helped me love this city even more, and realized I want to learn more. I’m glad I went on this tour — at first I thought it was going to be like every other cemetery, but it wasn’t. We dipped into history, tradition, and culture, all on one tour. I learned about a different side of Naples, and got to learn an important life lesson. I saw how sad this tour was, but how interesting and fun it was, and I recommend people to go.

The CNE-CNAC6F Command Junior Sailor of the Quarter recognizes the top junior sailor who has demonstrated sustained superior performance, proven leadership, self-improvement, command and community involvement, self-expression, military bearing, and appearance. Martinez was selected after participating in an oral board, along with three other candidates amongst CNECNA-C6F directorates. Having reported to TF 63 in 2011, Martinez is the administrative clerk responsible for reviewing and processing personnel and administrative actions for 56 military and civilian personnel assigned to the combined commands. He was nominated for accomplishments including tracking all customer service matters such as temporary lodging allowance claims, overseas housing allowance processing, electronic service records updates, and reenlistments; training a newly-hired civilian administrative assistant; and fostering a positive workplace environment. “We're extremely proud of his selection because he represents our combined commands, and he's a sailor that others would emulate,” said Master Chief Logistics Specialist (AW/SW) Patrick J. Adams, TF 63 and MSCEURAF senior enlisted leader and leading chief petty officer. “He's intelligent, hard-working and always conducts himself well in and out of uniform. He works well with his shipmates, is very respectful and supportive of his leaders and is active in the community. Martinez is enrolled in a study abroad program through Harvard University to earn his Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree with a focus in government. “[He] is always trying to improve himself, professionally and militarily,” said Adams. “A model sailor, and I would say that he's got a bright future in the military.” Pandolfe presented a Letter of Commendation and plaque to Martinez during the annual CNE-CNA-C6F command picnic June 22.

The Vice Admiral Robert F. Batchelder Award is presented by the Navy League to those Supply Corps officers who have made significant contributions to the supply readiness of our operating forces. Named one of five awardees, Snow provided logistics support to permanent and deployed commands across 181 ports within the European and Africa Command areas of responsibility. Snow’s specific contributions included managing a 75 percent increase in parts movements and a 650 percent increase in personnel movements for the Libyan liberation campaigns of Operations Odyssey Dawn, Unified Protector, and Odyssey Guard; coordinating with U.S. embassies in Africa in support of Africa Partnership Station logistics requirements; and enhancing key relationships between the U.S. 6th Fleet staff, type commanders, task forces, shore command, and commercial activities. “This award is a testament to your leadership, comprehensive understanding of naval logistics, and superb support for the warfighters’ unit readiness,” wrote Vice Adm. Frank C. Pandolfe, commander of U.S. 6th Fleet, in a congratulatory letter to Snow. “On behalf of every command with which you coordinated theater logistics in C6F AOR, please accept my sincere appreciation for an exceptional job well done.” Although Snow was assigned to CTF 63 for the duration of the award period, he transferred in February 2012 to report to the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN 77).

Out of a field of more than 130 candidates, O’Leary was selected as one of three people to complete a Training with Industry internship with FedEx in Memphis, Tenn. Training with Industry is a 12month program for Supply Corps lieutenants and lieutenant commanders that allows them to serve as fellows with a top supply chain company. This helps them gain valuable insight into business processes through exposure to executive level decision-making and direct involvement in corporate meetings and strategy sessions. Participating companies in 2013 are FedEx, Starbucks Coffee Company, and The Home Depot. O’Leary reported to TF 63 in 2010 as the fleet readiness officer responsible for providing logistics support to deployed ships in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility. Or, in his words: “We get the ships what they need when they are deployed everywhere from the Black Sea to the North Sea; the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean Sea; from the east and west coast of Africa down to the Cape of Good Hope.” Upon completion of the fellowship, O’Leary will serve a three year follow-on tour in one of the Navy’s key supply chain management assignments to use the skills and ideas gained from his experience. Rear Adm. Mark Buzby, commander of Military Sealift Command, presented Lewis with the Griff-Hume Antiterrorism award in a ceremony at Military Sealift Command headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Griff Hume Anti-terrorism award was first awarded in 2011 for vigilance in anti-terrorism and force protection efforts throughout the year. The award, which can be given in three categories, is named in memory of John "Griff" Hume, MSC's long-serving force protection director, and was created to recognize and bring awareness to MSC's ongoing anti-terrorism and force protection efforts. “This award is a tribute to the unstinting efforts of Mr. Peter Lewis in supporting anti-terrorism and force protection efforts in the Europe and Africa areas of responsibility,” said Buzby in a message announcing the award. “Well done.” Lewis reported to the then-Military Sealift Command Europe in Naples, Italy, in May 2005. He is responsible for the force protection of all MSC ships operating in the Europe and Africa areas of responsibility. Among his accomplishments, Lewis monitored ships’ AT/FP compliance during 476 port calls, supported ships during 138 choke point transits, and provided operational force protection planning and execution to a daily average of 34 MSC ships. “I’m honored,” said Lewis. “It’s nice to be recognized for your work, especially since it’s based on feedback from people you work with and the people you support. Over the years, I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from the masters and civilian mariners thanking me for making their force protection jobs easier.” “Our ships are at the tip of the spear and anything I do needs to support their work out there, not add to it,” said Lewis. “But, like any job, I can’t do a good job unless I’m supported by a great team. I have that here and throughout MSC as a whole.”

does solve their problems," said O'Leary. "I understand we are not comparing apples to apples, but, for example, when we have to get a mission-critical part to a ship, money isn't necessarily part of the conversation. In the 'real world,' I have to imagine all conversations revolve around impact on operating profits or margins. As our defense budgets continue to decrease, I'm anxious to see their practices and identify how we might be able to apply them to our business." Selection criteria for the program included officers who will graduate in 2013 from any of the Supply Corps post graduate education programs, as well as those who had already completed two operational tours and a Master’s degree with a 2013 rotation date. Obtaining your Sojourner Permit Italian law requires all foreign personnel working or living within Italy, other than an active-duty member under military orders, to obtain a Sojourner Permit within eight days of arrival in Italy. This is different from a visa, which is merely an approval for entry into the country. All applicants over 14 years of age must apply in person, as each person's signature is required at the time of application. NATIONALS OF ANY STATE OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY COMING TO ITALY DO NOT REQUIRE ANY VISA OR SOJOURNER PERMIT. As part of the Area Orientation process, the U.S. Region Legal Service Office (RLSO EURAFSWA) assists in the preparation and oversees the acquisition of the Sojourner Permit for all personnel attached to U.S. Navy commands in the Naples area. Army and Air Force personnel stationed at JFC must apply through the Carabiniere at the JFC Provost Marshall's Office, Building L. Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society 2012 Active Duty Fund Drive raises $83,511 By Jessica Goodman NMCRS publicity chair

hanks to the tireless work of fund drive coordinators, treasurers, chair persons, key persons and key community leaders, the 2012 NavyMarine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) Active Duty Fund Drive in Naples and Gaeta was completed successfully, raising $83,511. The community fell just shy of the fund drive goal of making 100 percent contact with all of the active duty service members in the Naples and Gaeta communities, making 92 percent contact. Out of the 21 area commands, 16 achieved 100 percent contact with their active duty service members. Three commands — including the USS Mount Whitney, with 62 people on board — had 100 percent of their personnel donate. The three commands that contributed the most in dollars were U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, which raised $16,127; the USS Mount Whitney, which raised $11,571; and Naval Support Activity Naples, which raised $8,927. The Naples Navy Exchange,

T

under the management of Tom Goodman, showed its support for the Naples military community by raising $5,645 for the fund drive through the sale of $5 certificates. These certificates were good for a percentage discount

on the customer’s next purchase. The total funds raised in 2012 exceeded 2011’s total by $3,336, showing that our active duty service members and base community continue to take care of their own.
