Escape to a hilltop monastery

By Lt. Cmdr. Suzanna Brugler, Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/ Commander U.S. 6th Fleet Public Affairs

A U.S. Navy woman competed in what is branded as the ultimate human race: South Africa’s Comrades Marathon, a 56Mosteller mile ultramarathon that started in Pietermaritzburg and ended in Durban June 3. Lt. Cmdr. Kelly Mosteller, assigned to commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa, and commander, U.S. 6th Fleet, completed the grueling race with an official time of 10 hours and 32 seconds, just days before High Speed Vessel Swift (HSV 2) made a port visit to Durban. Comrades is credited as being the greatest ultramarathon in the world, where athletes come from all over the globe to participate. To qualify for the race, runners must be 20 years of age or older, complete an officially recognized qualifying race within the year, and pay an entry fee. Mosteller, a woman who enjoys enduring physically challenging runs, ran marathons in Washington, D.C., and Torino, Italy, to qualify. With a route that encompasses five big hills and is run in opposite directions on alternating years, this year’s “down run” peaked at a height of 870 meters. Participants have only 12 hours to complete the run; this year approximately 12,000 of the 17,000 qualifying participants finished the race. “I think what enables someone to endure such a physically demanding race is that 90 percent of it is mental,” said Mosteller. “Comrades was the most challenging race I have run, not just because it was 20 miles further than I had ever run, but also because toward the end of the race, I was not only physically exhausted, but mentally tired, too.” The race is named for the vision of South African World War I veteran Vic Clapham, who felt that all those who had fallen in the war, his comrades, should be remembered and honored in a unique way – in a race where an individual’s physical frailties could be put to the test and overcome. see 56-MILE RACE Page 4

USO Block Party June 16

Happy Friday everyone! We’re beginning the summer months and many of you are either moving or sponsoring incoming personnel, or possibly both. I encourage you to get sponsorship training from the Fleet and Family Support Center and to take that duty seriously. We all remember the massive amount of information we needed prior to arriving and also as we were settling in. Area Orientation is set up to take care of the most pressing concerns, but even if newcomers were able to retain everything they learned, there are still plenty of small details that aren’t covered. Please be engaged and help your incoming personnel get started off right. We’re engaged with the consorzio daily on the trash situation, and I know that while the trash is being picked up routinely, it’s moving at a slower pace than we’d like. Some locations are being cleared faster or more frequently than others, and we’re working to fix that as well. One thing that does slow down the process is if bulk items like furniture, large TVs and treadmills are dropped at the trash collection points and not disposed of via the housing office. The easiest way to get rid of your bulky items is to call the Housing Trouble Desk and let them come pick them up for you. That way, you don’t even have to lug it down the stairs and across the parking lot. So it saves you effort, and it makes the regular garbage collection process much easier as well. Please help everyone out on that. The number for bulk pickup is 081-811-4285 or 081-811-4286. There’s still time today to get in your applications for the Teen Summer Camp Scholarship Program. This is a great opportunity for children of active-duty personnel to go to camp this summer, and the Navy’s going to pay for everything. Some of these camps are incredible deals, like Space Camp in Alabama or Surf Camp in Hawaii. Naples is hosting an art camp as a part of this program. I’d hate for our Naples-area teens not to take advantage of this opportunity. The deadline is the end of today Washington, D.C. time, so go to the Teen Center NOW to get it done. I value feedback from the community on any issues of concern. My job is to ensure the efficient and effective operation of this base, and as most of you are aware, I’ve been willing to try new options and experiment with new ways of doing business to raise the level of service my programs provide. Some ideas from the community are fantastic and easily implemented. Some are less constructive or less feasible for one reason or another. I value your input and if there are bureaucratic hurdles or regulations that prevent implementation of a seemingly good idea, I am happy to provide feedback. You can submit your ideas via a variety of channels. Probably the best channels are either speaking directly with a manager of the program itself, or by submitting an ICE comment on our website. Those comments come in to me and to the appropriate department head, and we respond to every comment (or at least the ones with contact information provided). So please keep the feedback coming. If you have a compliment or want to give positive feedback on a service, that’s always welcome, too. Don’t forget: Father’s Day is this Sunday. Happy Father’s Day to all the dedicated dads out there. Next week is the summer solstice and the first day of summer. Enjoy the sunshine and the beautiful Naples scenery, and have a great weekend!

Priest offers monetary incentive to wed In a small town in northern Italy, a priest is offering an incentive of €500 out of his own pocket to young couples who want to marry but are discouraged to do so by economic difficulties. The priest said he was surprised when he found out that the church’s registry was only half-full. Even more discomforting was the continual drop in membership numbers, from 17 new members in the year 1960 down to zero in the year 2006, and none so far this year. The priest pointed out the difficult economy has forced people to live with their families because they can’t afford the costs of a new house.

Italian authorities arrest terror suspects On Wednesday, Italian police arrested ten people who were suspected of a series of attempted terrorist acts in Italy, Germany and France. The arrests occurred as part of a vast operation in cities across Italy. The suspects are accused of plotting and organizing attacks against Milan’s private Bocconi University, as well as planning an attack on a government identification and expulsion center for immigrants. The group is also accused of sending letter bombs to Equitalia, the Italian tax-collection agency.

Parts of Rome’s Trevi fountain crumble Several decorative pieces fell from the top of the 280-year-old Trevi fountain in Rome. This incident prompted alarm that one of the city’s most famous monuments is in a critical state and needs a major restoration. Barriers were put up around one side of the square to prevent tourists from getting too close, while a fire brigade crane was brought in to help restoration experts examine the damage. Umberto Broccoli, superintendent of Rome's artistic heritage, said the damage was

probably due to water infiltration caused by heavy rain this past winter. The Trevi Fountain last had a major restoration in 1991. The Baroque fountain was commissioned by Pope Clement XII, with work beginning in 1732 and continuing for the next thirty years. Rome’s mayor is considering finding a private sponsor to fund maintenance and create a special fund to protect Rome’s most important monuments. The mineral water company Acqua Claudia has said it will pay €200,000 to fix the Trevi Fountain. Each week when the fountain is drained, about €3,000 in coins is collected by cleaners, with the money going to charities throughout the city.

Venetian archbishop tells churches to tone down bell-ringing After years of complaints from Venetians about the noise from excessive bell ringing, the archbishop of Venice issued a decree which forces the city’s churches to ring their bells with “moderation.” The decree, which will go into effect later this month, will regulate the hours, duration, intensity and procedures for bell-ringing. The decision was a compromise between freedom of religion and the demand for peace and quiet from an increasing population. The complaints began in 2008 when citizens living in the town of Mestre filed against the excessively loud ringing of bells from the church of San Pietro Orseolo. Environmental officials were called in and the church priest was fined €1,280 after it was found that the bells exceeded the decibel level allowed. The debate spread soon to other parishes, with residents saying they could no longer stand the loud and frequent bell-ringing. The 325-foot tall bell tower in St. Mark’s Square is exempt from the new rules. Exceptions will also be made for Christmas and Easter.

56-MILE RACE Continued from Page 1

The first Comrades Marathon took place on May 24, 1921 and has continued every year since then, with the exception of a few years during World War II. “What makes Comrades so unique really is the camaraderie that you feel with other runners as well as spectators as you’re running the marathon,” said Mosteller. “People from all walks of life and incredibly diverse backgrounds line the streets for hours to cheer on the runners. It’s a celebration of the human spirit, in which people are united in seeing you through to the end.” With a time that put her in the top-half of the 12,000 runners who finished the race, it appears the camaraderie saw her through. Mosteller is already making plans to run in next year´s Comrades Marathon.

From the Navy College Office

Excitement filled the air as 61 college graduates and certificate recipients marched into the Capodichino base theater Friday, June 8 during the annual Graduation/Recognition Ceremony. All of the graduates felt proud of a mission well accomplished as they were each individually recognized for their achievement. Graduates from the four on-base colleges and from colleges throughout the continental United States were represented in the ceremony. In total, the printed graduation program recognized about 200 graduates, even though only 61 of them walked during the ceremony. Lt. Cmdr. Keith Tukes of Naval Support Activity (NSA) Naples security department gave the welcoming remarks and introduced the keynote speaker, Capt. John Newcomer, commander of the Center for Personal and Professional Development in Dam Neck, Va. Capt. Newcomer gave a motivational graduation speech that charged each graduate to move on and fulfill his or her destiny. At the reception after the ceremony, graduates had an opportunity to mingle with their co-workers and family members. Earning a college degree is a long and hard road to travel and a challenge to anyone. Chief Petty Officer Wilbert Davis of Naval Computing and Telecommunications Station Naples recently travelled to Colorado to complete the capstone requirement for award of a MBA from Colorado State University. LN1 Jose Macumba, Jr. completed a Bachelor of Science

Degree in Legal Studies with Roger Williams University. Meanwhile, YN1 Kevin Mason of Commander Navy Region Europe, Africa, Southwest Asia completed a Bachelor of Science degree in cybersecurity, a new and challenging field of study. All services were represented at the graduation ceremony. Sgt. 1st Class Jose Mendoza of the U.S. Army, 2nd NATO Signal Battalion, was recognized for completing a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Ashford University. In total, more than 100 military and civilian community members completed an associate, bachelor’s or graduate degree with University of Maryland University College during the past year, and were recognized in the ceremony or in the printed graduation program. Additionally, several Central Texas College graduates gleamed with pride as they were awarded an Associate of Science degree in criminal justice or information technology. Many other graduates completed a graduate degree with either the University of Oklahoma or the University of Phoenix. At Naval Support Activity Naples, it is possible to earn a graduate degree on site through face-to-face classes or via distance education. Visit the Navy College Office if you would like information on how to earn a college degree, or how to recommence your work toward a degree. You can visit the Navy College Office in person on the main floor of the Admin II building at Capodichino, or you can contact the office at nco.naples@eu.navy.mil or at 081-568-6684/6681/ 6678.

he Certosa di San Martino is a place that seems to get more and more beautiful each time you visit. The former Carthusian monastery sits atop a hill in Naples’ Vomero district and commands some of the best views in the city, while also containing worldclass marble decoration, paintings and inlaid woodwork. The monastery dates back to 1325, when Charles of Anjou (then Duke of Calabria) ordered its construction. It was dedicated to St. Martin, bishop of Tours, who was an important saint for the French monarchs who ruled Naples at the time. Inside the monastic complex, visitors will find a magnificent Baroque church featuring stunning inlaid marble decoration. The decorative scheme was begun in the 1600s under the supervision of the sculptor Cosimo Fanzago, who performed much of the work himself. The church also contains high-quality sculptures by

T

Giuseppe Sanmartino, whose figures appear to be constantly in motion, along with religious paintings by several significant Neapolitan artists. At the rear of the church, visitors will find a sacristy containing 56 carved walnut wardrobes. These are jawdropping examples of the Southern Italian art of inlaid woodwork. The top row of wardrobes shows scenes from scripture and the Apocalypse, while the panels below depict fantastical architectural schemes. The three-dimensional perspective on these is something to behold, especially since the effect is created with pieces of wood instead of a paintbrush. Beyond the sacristy, the treasury contains gilded cases that once held the monastery’s relics. In this room, visitors will find an emotional “Pietà” by Jusepe de Ribera, as well as a masterful ceiling painting by Luca Giordano that seems to lift the viewer up into the clouds. Exiting out the back of the church, you’ll find the main cloister of the monastery. This green space was once where the Carthusian monks would

A visit to the Certosa di San Martino offers nature, art and history pass their time in quiet reflection. Today it is equally calming, filled with trees and the sound of birds chirping. Standing in the cloister, you’ll feel as if you’re miles away from the city, even though today the monastery is only a short stroll away from the heart of one of Naples’ busiest shopping districts. More sculptural work by Fanzago is featured here, including the marble skulls that line the cemetery walls and the portrait busts that sit above several of the doors. The rest of the monastic complex contains a museum that includes a collection of Neapolitan nativity scenes (presepe), a section on naval history and space for temporary exhibits. These rooms are worth exploring if you have even a mild interest in Neapolitan or Italian history. One of the most interesting rooms in the museum is the Hall of Carriages. This corridor contains two large coaches, one of which was once used by King Ferdinand II and his wife, Maria Cristina di Savoia. The size of these carriages (the wheel of one is more than six feet in diame-

ter) and their gilded decoration says a great deal about how the noble families of Naples once lived. Also displayed along the walls of the Hall of Carriages are gigantic family crests that once hung throughout the city. If you pass through the Hall of Carriages, you will reach a patio overlooking the city of Naples and the terraced gardens of the monastery. From here you can follow a footpath to admire the rest of the gardens, or simply enjoy the view of the city and the sea. Either way, you may begin to envy the former monks of San Martino, who had the privilege of living amid these sights every day.

VENUE INFORMATION The Certosa di San Martino is located at Largo San Martino, 5 in Naples’ Vomero district. The site is open from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. (ticket office closes one hour before). Closed Wednesdays. To get there, take the Metro Linea 2 to Montesanto, then take the Funicolare di Montesanto to Via Morghen. The monastery is about a half-mile away on foot.

Honoring Herman Chanowitz: veteran, teacher and friend By Panorama staff

he Naples community paid its respects this past week to Herman Chanowitz, a retired Army Air Corps captain and former teacher at the NATO garrison in Bagnoli who passed away June 5. He was 97. Members of the U.S. military’s Jewish community held a memorial service for Chanowitz Saturday, June 9, while the U.S. Army NATO AFSOUTH battalion at Allied Joint Force Command (JFC) Naples held a ceremony in his honor Tuesday, June 12. Chanowitz served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. As a member of the 2nd Tactical Air Communications Squadron, Herman participated in several battles in the Naples area, including the assault landing at Salerno (“Operation Avalanche”), and the battles to liberate San Pietro Infine and Cassino while attached to the 36th Infantry Division. In 1978 he returned to the Naples area, the home of his wife of 67 years, Adriana. Chanowitz spent much of his time over the years teaching university classes at the NATO garrison in Bagnoli and providing historic tours to visitors from all over the world. He was honored in a memorial service at the Naples synagogue in the downtown district of Chiaia June 9. During the ceremony, Rachel Cornette, a lay leader in the Jewish community at Naval Support Activity Naples, spoke of her friendship with Chanowitz, as well as his life and career. “He had no enemies, and everyone was a friend within moments of meeting him,” Cornette said. “Herman’s life and love made a profound impact on many people, and his many acts of kindness showed a commitment to repairing the world.” At JFC Naples, a ceremony was held in memory of Chanowitz June 12. Presiding over the event was U.S. Army Chaplain (Capt.) Ivan Arreguin and U.S. Army Cpl. Aaron Carson. More than 100 friends and family, including the mayor of San Pietro Infine, Giuseppe Eugenio Vecchiarino, attended the memorial event.

Congratulations, Naples High School Class of 2012 By Sandi Boggs The 2012 Senior Class of Naples High School had a commencement ceremony at Carney Park Thursday, June 7. Vice Adm. Frank Craig Pandolfe was gracious enough to speak at the ceremony. Lucas Boggs, a senior student, said that it meant a lot to him for the admiral to take time out of his busy schedule to speak at the ceremony. Following the graduation, the graduates had the opportunity to attend a Senior Bash Lock In at Strikers Bowling Alley. The seniors enjoyed the evening of bowling, playing casino games, watching movies, eating, dancing to a live DJ, and enjoying each others’ company — maybe for the last time. The event was sponsored by Child and Youth Programs and the Senior Class Parent Committee. The seniors’ parents donated food, drinks and some even provided prizes that the graduates got to bid on at a silent auction. Naples Overseas Spouses Club donated three baskets for the silent auction. The baskets were created from new items that were donated to the Forgotten Treasures Thrift Store. The Navy Exchange donated several current movie DVDs, as well as some music CDs. Navy Federal Credit Union supplied the grand prize, an iPad. The senior class students will be heading off into the workforce or to college, but they will always remember their graduation, the Senior Bash Lock In and the support of the local community. • NOT PICTURED: Takara Harper.

Until this year Isabel, affectionately called Izzy, had never played organized volleyball. By the end of her first season, she had made a name for herself as a firstteam All European Selection on a European Championship team. With 42 solo blocks and 108 kills, she was a force to be reckoned with. Izzy is not only a powerhouse on the volleyball court, but also in the swimming pool. John Fain earned these honors through hard work and discipline throughout the off-season. Moreover, his leadership as team captain was outstanding. He led by example and was a mentor to the younger athletes. John’s leadership had a positive effect on the overall team climate, said cross country coach Francis “Chip” Noonan. Noonan said he considers this past season to be the cross country team’s best ever, and attributes this to the impact of John’s leadership. Fain continued to perform well during the track and field season this spring. He excelled in long-distance events throughout the season, and placed third in the 1,600meter run at the European championships.

The Anglo-Italian School (Montessori Division), an international school at open to all NATO dependents, held its fifth-grade graduation ceremony Thursday, June 7 at the Agnano Terme. At the ceremony, awards were given for the class valedictorians, salutatorians and to the winners of the Montessori Award of Excellence. The valedictorians were Annelise Holland of Mrs. Ann Lindsay’s class and GianJoseph Villanueva of Mrs. Jill Dunn’s class. Salutatorians were Emilia Butnaru of Mrs. Lindsay’s class and Giordana Russo of Mrs. Dunn’s class. Additionally, two students received The Montessori Award of Excellence. This award is given to the one student of each graduating class who is considered the top representative of his or her country and best exemplifies the Montessori philosophy. The 2012 winners of the Montessori Award of Excellence were Halit Utku Maden from

Turkey for Mrs. Lindsay’s class and Beatriz Roca from Spain for Mrs. Dunn’s class. These students were selected based on their ability to converse in at least two languages and how well they embody the type of youth the Anglo-Italian School aims to produce: a well-rounded individual who is able in body, mind, and spirit to lead a successful life and contribute greatly to the community. They have demonstrated an exceptional ability to bring people of different cultures and nations together, thereby advancing the cause of international cooperation and understanding. They also epitomize the school’s philosophy of becoming an independent young adult, reflecting the important Montessori ideal of “help me to do it by myself.” Once awards were given out at the June 7 ceremony, all the students received their diplomas. The ceremony concluded with the graduates performing a musical program that included “Child of the Universe,” “Shine, Love, Shine” and “Arrivederci Tutti.”

Members of the Naval Support Activity Gaeta community took part in a hands-on pizza making workshop Monday, June 11. The workshop took place at a country home in the mountains, near the homeport of the USS Mt. Whitney (LCC-20). At the hands-on workshop, members of the Gaeta naval community learned directly from mamma and nonna how to make pizza the original way, step by step. Class attendees learned how to make their pizzas using simple ingredients, most of which were grown on the farm known as Porto di Mola. They were taught the essential techniques of kneading, rolling, topping, and

baking pizza dough. A wooden oven cooked the pizzas, giving the pizza that unique taste that can only be obtained by using traditional — yet simple — techniques, combined with good ingredients. This class was part of a series of cooking workshops coordinated by the Gaeta Fleet and Family Support Center. The true treasure that attendees discover during these authentic, handson classes is the human relation-

ship with the local Italians and the cultural exchange. Italian is spoken and new friends are made at every event like this. The attendees got to taste their own pizza creations and also could take home all the pizza they could not eat. As a final surprise, the Porto di Mola owner, Mr. Antimo, accompanied the very happy attendees to one of his cherry trees so that everyone got to pick their own cherries and end the day deliciously.

Transportation and parking Buses to Carney Park will be available Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1, departing from Capodichino and the Support Site. FFSC Tip of the Week: Resume writing From the Fleet and Family Support Center

Writing a resume is typically one of the first steps in the job search process, and often it is the most challenging step. Your resume has a significant job. It has to speak for you when you are not there to speak for yourself. Many times, your resume is what provides a prospective employer with his or her first impression. Chances are you have picked up advice and learned resume writing “rules” along the way from books, friends, or instructors. You may have even been offered opinions or methods that seem contradictory. Keep in mind that a resume is very subjective, and what separates a good resume from a poor one often is a matter of opinion. However, there are two concrete rules of resume writing: 1.Never submit a resume with errors. Submitting a resume with any type of misspelling, typographical or grammatical error attacks your professionalism. 2.Never lie. Lying, even bending the truth a little bit, attacks your integrity. Think of your resume as your advertisement. You must convince an employer that you are worth hiring. Market your skills and accomplishments to “sell” yourself! For more information about resume writing workshops through the Fleet and Family Support Center, call 081-811-6372.
