Developing Your Career and Getting Published Learn Crime From the Experts Put the Science Into Your Science Fiction Fiction and Poetry Intensive Courses Something A Little Bit Different Fiction: Form and Genre Indie Publishers and Indie Authors Saving Money, Finding Money

Dear Writer, It’s taken us a while to put this programme together (and it’s still not finished – watch out for the spring edition, out in December 2015, which will include more workshops and masterclasses taking place next spring and summer). We’ve brought together the best writers and teachers we could find to lead workshops which will challenge and provoke you to take your writing even further, and possibly even to try new directions, exploring new territory. You’ll notice the programme is text-heavy. What can I say... we’re writers, not visual artists... Seriously though, we wanted to give you as much information as possible. In most cases there is even more information for each class on our website. If you’re not sure whether a class is right for you, get in touch, and we’ll do our best to help. One thing I will say is that all our classes are aimed at intermediate to advanced level writers, unless it specifically states they are for beginners. If you’re looking for a more basic class, I recommend our friends at Writing School East Midlands, who run excellent workshops and courses at beginner to intermediate level in Nottingham, Leicester and Derby (www.writingeastmidlands.co.uk). You might also notice that the listings are not in date order. I decided to group by theme instead, but there is a handy colour-coded chronological listing on the back of the brochure. And I’m going to say the C-word. Yes, Christmas. If you’re desperate to book on one of the classes but are a bit short of cash (like many writers), why not ask someone to buy you a place for a Christmas gift? Or maybe you’re not sure what to give a writer friend... look no further than our great range of workshops. Happy writing!

General Information All classes are at Nottingham Writers’ Studio. The Studio is fully accessible and has facilities for making hot drinks. Lunch is not provided for one-day workshops unless otherwise stated. Bookings can be made on our website via PayPal (you don’t need a PayPal account), by post or in person by cheque (payable to Nottingham Writers’ Studio), or in person by cash. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone any course or workshop that does not reach break-even bookings a week in advance of the start date. All who have booked will be notified and advance payments refunded. If you cancel your booking more than a week in advance your payment will be refunded, otherwise your payment is non-refundable. Developing Your Career and Getting Published You know you can write. You’ve worked hard to perfect the craft and find your voice. But how do you embark on a writing career, and how do you steer it in the right direction?

Creative and Professional Development with Cathy Grindrod Sat 26 Sep 2015, 10:00-13:00, £40 members, £60 non-members Being a writer involves much more than simply producing words on the page. Writers also need to consider their long-term goals and aims for their writing lives. This workshop will help you uncover what you really want to achieve with your writing, identify the obstacles holding you back, and develop a detailed action plan to get you to where you really want to be. If you feel at all stuck or frustrated with your progress, this is the workshop for you. Cathy Grindrod is an award-winning Derbyshire writer, formerly Derbyshire Poet Laureate, whose writing has been widely published and broadcast. She also works to support other writers and organisations as a literature consultant, tutor, mentor and project manager, specialising in managing and facilitating creative projects to improve wellbeing.

Literary Agent Masterclass with Tom Witcomb Sun 1 Nov 2015, 13:00-15:30, £15 members, £25 non-members The process of getting an agent can seem more daunting than writing the book in the first place. This event with agent Tom Witcomb of leading agency Blake Friedmann will help demystify the process by revealing an agent-side view of the query process, including tips on making yours stand out. He will also talk about what agents do to sell books and how they help authors build careers. Don't miss this chance to get the inside scoop on agents. Tom has agreed to give a few in-depth written critiques on query letters/first chapters – first come first served. These cost an additional £15 (£25 for non-members) and will be returned to you after the event. Tom Witcomb has worked at Blake Friedmann for seven years. His list comprises non-fiction and fiction for all ages: from middle-grade to adult. His tastes are hugely varied: he likes to read everything from SF and fantasy to literary fiction.

How to Get Published: A Step-by-step Approach with Alex Davis Starting Wed 13 Jan 2016, 4 weeks, 19:00-21:00, £40 members, £60 non-members Finishing a novel means facing a whole new world of queries, agents, synopses and rejections that can be daunting even for those expecting it. This course will demsytify the process of submitting your work to agents and editors. It will cover how to find the right ones to approach, how to write a query letter that will stand out from the slush pile, how to write a synopsis, and what makes compelling sample chapters that will have agents and editors scrambling to ask for more. Alex Davis is an author, publisher, tutor and events organiser. His debut science-fiction novel, The Last War, is out now from Tickety Boo Press. He co-ordinates the Edge-Lit event and is part of the management committee for Derby Book Festival. He also runs Boo Books, Derby's independent press, which promotes regional talent. page 3

#3: Hardcore Physics Thu 29 Oct 2015, 19:30-21:00, £10 members, £15 non-members Many SF writers take their inspiration from the cutting edge of physics, and most need to have at least some basic knowledge of the way the universe works. Dr Justin Bray is a researcher at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at Manchester University. He researches into high-energy particles and magnetism. Dr Stefano Camera is a post-doctoral research associate in Theoretical and Observational Cosmology at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics. Fiction and Poetry Intensive Courses Not for the faint-hearted, these courses will show you how to take your work to the next level. Expect to work hard, and reap the rewards with our help.

Intensive Novel Writing with Deborah Bailey Starting Mon 5 Oct 2015, 16 weeks (no classes 30 Nov – 11 Jan inclusive), 19:00-21:30, £140 members, £210 non-members Writing a novel can feel like re-inventing the wheel – but it doesn't have to. This intensive course is designed to walk you through the process of writing a novel. Unlike other courses that focus on elements such as plot or character individually, this course starts with chapter one and examines what each part of your story needs to be doing specifically and as part of the whole. It looks at how characters change and grow over the course of your novel, how to develop plot complications and sub-plots, and how to build tension and suspense. By the end of the course you could have the first draft of your novel completed! Deborah Bailey is a former full-time editor who now freelances as a writer and editor. She teaches writing and serves as a writing mentor as well as co-chairing the Nottingham Writers’ Studio board. Her fiction has recently appeared in Mirror Dance, This Dark Matter, Luna Station Quarterly, Wicked Words Quarterly, The Red Volume fundraiser anthology, and MicroHorror.

She and her partner are often off gallivanting around Europe, when she isn’t chained to her desk working. Her work can be found in various anthologies, including Women of the Dark Streets, She Shifters and Girls Who Bite.

Over ten weeks, you will write and revise poems, look at different way collections are organised, learn how to structure and order your collection, and figure out the next steps for getting your work out there. Carol Rowntree Jones’s work has been published in The North, Assent, Staple and 111O. She has a chapbook published in the US by Dancing Girl Press and won the inaugural Overton Poetry Prize in 2014.
