The Intelligence of Using AI

The Intelligence of Using AI

by Rigoberto Murillo

As someone deeply interested in the potential impacts of OpenAI and other open-source software, I constantly ask myself what the future will hold, and keep an open eye for the signs that tell me to embrace change. Will these technologies bring about unprecedented levels of prosperity and progress, or will they lead to negative consequences that we cannot foresee?

Throughout history, we have seen how technological innovations have transformed society and the global economy. The invention of the steam engine in the late 18th century marked the beginning of the industrial revolution, which led to widespread changes in manufacturing, transportation, and communication. The creation of the internet in the late 20th century brought about the digital revolution, which has transformed how we interact, work, and do business. With the advent of OpenAI and other open-source software, we are on the cusp of yet another major technological shift.

One thing is sure: the digital revolution by OpenAI and other open-source software is an unstoppable force already transforming society and the global economy. What does this mean for sales professionals, solopreneurs, and those in upper management representing the company brand?

As a creative media agency owner with nearly fifteen years in the renewable energy industry (in many different roles) I have seen firsthand the aversion companies have to change in sales and marketing strategies. Despite the clear benefits of leveraging personal brands, social media, and other digital platforms for marketing and sales, there is resistance to rethinking their traditional methods. Open-source software like OpenAI may accelerate the need to accept change, as it allows individuals without traditional marketing degrees or certifications to build and maintain successful businesses in the technology, media, and creative industries.

The pandemic of 2019 — and the resulting shift to remote work — have already highlighted the importance of personal branding, and the role of social media in marketing and sales. It is essential that companies recognize the importance of treating social media strategies as more than just a simple companion to traditional outbound marketing methods, and instead integrate them into their overall marketing and sales strategies. The power of personal branding, and the ability to leverage technology to build and maintain strong relationships, will only grow in the coming years.

At the same time, however, OpenAI and other open-source software have the potential to create new opportunities and industries we cannot even imagine today. The digital revolution has already given rise to new businesses and professions; more will likely emerge as technology advances.

As we consider the potential consequences of the digital revolution, it is also important to remember that technology is not neutral. It is shaped by the values and priorities of those who create it, and can be used for good or ill. We must consider the ethical implications of these technologies to ensure that they are used in a responsible and accountable manner.

This is not a new concern. Science fiction has long explored the potential dangers of artificial intelligence, from the "Terminator" movies of the 1990s, to the more recent series "Black Mirror." These stories serve as cautionary tales, reminding us that the path we choose with technology will have far-reaching consequences.

As we advance down the digital revolution path, remember to ask hard questions about what kind of future we want to create. Will we use these technologies to build a more prosperous and equitable world, or will we allow them to drive a wedge between the haves and the have-nots? The choice is ours.
