fortunate enough to see Danse Lhasa Danse at Luminato. I was a big fan of Lhasa and like so many Canadians felt the tragedy of her dying at such a young age of breast cancer. Pierre-Paul, the choreographer of PierrePaul Savoie Danse company, went to Lhasa’s family and got permission to put together this piece. It’s a really interesting tribute to her featuring her band with wellknown Quebec singers and his dance company. He asked seven Montréal choreographers to create pieces based on Lhasa’s music for his dance company. There is a whole visual component which comes in and out and the only spoken words are from Lhasa. When you hear her last album (Lhasa released on Warner in 2009) even though she wrote the album before she was

diagnosed with breast cancer there are some songs that (hint at what’s to come). So many of the songs are representative of a young woman, there’s love songs but there’s also this wonderfully touching aspect about mortality. At one point she talks about her father’s interpretation of death and knowing that she passed away makes it all that much more poignant. For those of us who knew Lhasa we were so touched by it but there were many people who wouldn’t have had that same association with Lhasa and they loved it too. Her music was so engaging and for a lot of the younger crowd they were introduced to a wonderful songwriter and her music. — Kronos Quartet performs in the Chan Shun Concert Hall Saturday, Oct. 19 at 8 p.m. For more information on the 2013/14 Chan Centre Presents concert series visit chancentre.com/our-season.
