the Vancouver Recital Society and Early Music Vancouver. We also have UBC graduations going on at the Chan Centre as well as 18 or 19 high schools that have their grads there. It’s a very busy place in terms of all the different activities. The third arm of it is the Chan Centre presentation series and that’s where the Kronos Quartet/Philip Glass concert (fits in). This year we are doing seven mainstage concerts and we also do other things in our smaller venues. With our series I wanted to complement what was

Quartet started coming to the Chan Centre a number of years ago. David Harrington of Kronos absolutely adores the concert hall — he thinks it’s one of the best halls he’s ever performed in anywhere in the entire world — which is pretty high praise considering where Kronos Quartet has played. They’ve broken tradition and changed how people view string quartets with their emphasis on commissioning different composers and working with all sorts of different artists. They love Vancouver audiences — they find them very adventurous and interested in what they are doing. It’s been a really great match with all the interesting programming they’ve been doing. We worked with them to bring in Tanya Tagaq — the Inuit throat singer. Our last event with them was with Homayun Sakhi who is an artist supported by the Ismaili Council and the Aga Khan Foundation, so we had a wonderful experience with the Ismaili Council of B.C. and doing all kinds of extra events with them in support of this concert. Kronos brings really interesting opportunities for us. For this concert I was approached by their manager to see if the Chan Centre would like to host the world premiere of a Philip Glass piece that was being written for the quartet in honour of their 40th anniversary. We were really fortunate that Philip Glass is able to come and do a pre-concert talk for us. We’re thrilled to be hosting the world premiere. When it was brought to me, I spoke with our Dean of Arts and said this is just such a wonderful opportunity and I’m very happy he agreed, so we partnered a commission by the Chan Centre through the Faculty of Arts. The Glass talk with Eleanor Wachtel will be recorded for CBC’s Wachtel on the Arts. Glass is more and more interested in composing rather than touring. This is a really special occasion.
