ear Members,

The 2016 show season is in full swing, and we have important information and news! New potential outlets for your unused NODA bucks: The NODA board approved a program that will offer NODA members additional opportunities for spending those old and well-worn NODA bucks earned over the years. We are asking venues and professionals who are having clinics of interest to NODA members to accept a maximum of five NODA bucks as part of the audit fee payment. We will then reimburse the facility for those NODA bucks. We hope to draw more auditors into local events, and we are pleased to give discounted local education to NODA members. If you are a professional or have a venue that will be bringing in a clinician that could be of interest to NODA members and are interested in participating in this program, please contact one of NODA’s Education Committee Co-chairs, Berni Moauro, Berni-edu@nodarider.org or Marcia Doyle, Marica-edu@nodarider.org. We will include the discount information in our calendar information for your event. The venues can then include this opportunity when advertising auditing fees for their events.

had in years, gave our judges a full day of judging. Thank you Barb Soukup and Debby Savage for coming. Competitors and volunteers were fabulous, facing the ever-changing conditions with smiles and good humor. Kristi Foltz and crew at Sweetwater Equestrian, a new venue for us, were extremely helpful and totally welcoming. Thank you to Sally Burton and Kirsten Thomas, who handled their new positions like pros, and with the help of veterans Mary Lou Gallagher and Jennifer Tulleners it was a great day that won’t soon be forgotten. After years of absence we finally had entries in our Lead Line Class. It was great fun to see the little ones in the ring and we hope that they are our next generation of dressage riders. We introduced some new awards at this show: a beautiful Thoroughbred Incentive Program (TIP) High Point and a High Point Western Dressage ribbon joins the High Point awarded for Classical Dressage. The Team Competition was also a success with excellent teams winning at both Champion and Reserve. The participation in this show gives us hope for a wonderfully successful schooling show season. Rocky River is our next schooling show and I am encouraged that it will also bring competitors back to NODA schooling shows. We are working hard to be what our membership expects.

Raffle tickets on sale – Charlotte Dujardin: As some of you may already know, NODA member Arielle Brodkey generously donated a VIP ticket package for “An Intimate Weekend with Charlotte Dujardin,” October 15th & 16th at Caledon Equestrian Park in Caledon, Ontario. This raffle was announced on our Facebook page on May 25th, and we sold 10 of the 60 tickets within two days. Please see the details in this issue and on our Facebook page and website. Tickets Sweetwater Schooling Show: NODA’s first will be sold until gone and the winner’s schooling show couldn’t have gone better name will be drawn during the Recognized or had any worse weather conditions! A Show weekend at the Competitors’ Party full show, with more entries than we have on July 23rd. You don’t need to be present

Sponsorship Recognized Show – Thank you: Thank you so much to all of you who have pledged your support. We need a little time to get our fabulous program together, so if you haven’t sent your ad and/or payment, please do so by June 27th . A great deal of the success of NODA’s Recognized Shows depends on support from our sponsors and advertisers. We are behind last year’s commitments for support. The 13th Annual New Vocations Charity Horse Show Supports Retired Thoroughbred Racehorses The 13th Annual New Vocations Charity Horse Show is a hunter, jumper, dressage and pleasure event that spotlights Thoroughbreds and emphasizes their suitability and versatility in careers beyond racing. Held in Delaware, Ohio July 2 & 3 2016, the show is open to all breeds, but offers classes specifically for Thoroughbreds, allowing retired racehorses to once again be competitive. By providing both Thoroughbred and open breed classes the event draws hundreds of participants and has become one of the program’s largest fundraisers generating over $60,000 in 2015! The show also offers Prize Money purses, big beautiful ribbons, great and useful prizes and diverse class offerings for every age and level of rider. The Dressage portion of our show has grown each year! We are extremely fortunate in the large response we have received to our Dressage classes and High Point Awards. We have expanded from one ring to two show rings for the entire weekend and have levels of competitors from Intro to Prix St. Georges traveling from as far as Illinois and Canada. The show also includes Percentage and Western Dressage tests. The New Vocations Charity Horse Show also spotlights Thoroughbreds in our Thoroughbred Recognition Ceremony, where each Thoroughbred in attendance is asked to the Main Hunter Ring for acknowledgement and to be awarded with a special gift from New Vocations. Horses who have raced more than 50 times or earned over $100,000 receive special reverence

NODA News 2016 Page 5

in our War Horse classes and High Point Award. All proceeds go directly to support New Vocations’ efforts to rehab, retrain, and rehome retired racehorses. New Vocations was founded in 1992 and has grown into the largest racehorse adoption program in the country with facilities in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. Our Mission is to stand in the gap for noncompetitive, often injured racehorses providing a peaceful environment and skilled hands to assist in their development as pleasure mounts. To place these horses in experienced loving homes that will continue their education so each has a skill and therefore, a future. The need for a type of program is great, as demonstrated by the over 100 horses we have in our program at any given time and the long waitlist of horses to come in. The cost for so many horses is great, especially as the majority need rehabilitation in addition to the standard boarding fees, transitional training/rider salaries, vet/ chiropractor/farrier bills, supplemental feed bills and administration/office expenses. Though we zealously keep expenditures to a minimum, our overhead per horse is just under $3,500. Our adoption fees average range from waiving fees on some of the neediest horses to $1000. This $2,500 $3,500 shortfall per horse has to be made up solely by donations, grants and fundraisers such as our Charity Horse Show. For more information visit www.newvocations.org

USDF L Program Session C By Clara Etzel

had been anticipating my final weekend in Arizona for the L Program for weeks. Session C is all about collective marks, equitation, rider biomechanics and basics. I flew out to Phoenix for the last weekend on April 15, ready to learn from L Faculty Member, USEF S Judge and retired FEI O judge, Axel Steiner. Saturday the group spent the entire day in the classroom with discussion about judging the collective marks then watching videos of movements from tests. Sunday the group spent the entire day watching demo riders from Training Level Test 1 to Second Level Test 3. Just like in Session B, participants and auditors had an awesome set of demo horses and riders to watch. Each L faculty member has given the group their own wisdom from years judging at C. Just like Lois Yukins and Joan Darnell, Axel had some great words of wisdom for the group to take with them about judging. Axel echoed the opinion that Lois and Joan had about the “nonbrilliance” movements (like the halt or reinback) being opportunities for average moving horses to score high marks. Axel’s point about the halt was that many riders are “donating points right at the beginning” with rushing the halt. He says riders

NODA News 2016 Page 6

should make sure they feel “rock solid” before they salute. A good rule is to count 3 seconds before moving forward from the halt.

All faculty members have had a great sense of humor so far, and Axel’s reasoning for what movement earns a 10 had the entire group laughing out loud. According to Axel, “when a hand comes out of the clouds and says this is a 10,” then you have to score a 10. Axel made the point that a judge has to be able to place the best horse/rider pair in order relative to the quality of the performance. It was clear throughout the weekend how much Axel respects the sport and how serious he takes his role as a judge and educator of future judges. In his words, you want to be the most accurate when sitting at C, not the most popular. So now the participants, like me, who are going on to D1, D2 and the Final Exam ready ourselves for judging tests at a horse show in Parker, CO. Here’s to quality, accuracy, and a hand coming through the clouds. Photos courtesy of Clara Etzel
