We had a large number of members qualify for our Schooling Show Championships this year. By the time you read this letter, the open and championship Shows will be over, and I hope everyone that participated had a wonderful time. As we know, all good things must come to an end, and we are sad to say that this will be Shannon O’Hara’s last year as Banquet Chair. We thank her and appreciate all she has contributed over the past three years. 2016 NODA Member Survey Results & Appeal to Members On our 2016 membership form, NODA included a short survey to find out more about our members, and their relationship with the organization. Below are the results of the survey. Thank you to everyone who answered our questions. This will help us to assess our efforts to better connect with our members, to know what services our members are utilizing and taking advantage of, and also to know what our members are giving back to us as volunteers. 276 (86%) of our members responded to questions on the 2016 membership form: 22 (7 %) were board members 75 (23 %) were schooling show volunteers 44 (14 %) were recognized show volunteers 82 (26 %) competed in recognized shows 101 (31 %) competed in schooling shows In reviewing the results above, we are thrilled to see that almost 60% of our members have participated in our schooling and recognized shows!! NODA is very proud to be offer these opportunities to our members, and the surrounding community each year. This year we had seven schooling shows, the schooling show championship, and the recognized show & encore shows. It takes countless volunteer hours in every aspect to make these shows a reality. While nearly 60% of members showed, only 39% had volunteered at the shows, and 7% volunteered as board members. To put it bluntly: these shows cannot exist and this organization cannot succeed without volunteer support from our members. We are extremely grateful for those who have taken the time out of their busy schedules to help us with everything from schooling shows to board positions, articles and photos for the newsletter, but we are still finding ourselves with barely enough volunteers to make ends meet. We currently have several board positions open that we will need to fill. Many of our board members have volunteered their time year after year to our organization, and it’s time to hand over the torch. I am looking at you—younger, up and coming members!! Dee’s letter this month discusses several of these opportunities! Please keep an eye out on NODA’s Facebook, website and future newsletters for additional information on open board positions, as well as other volunteer opportunities open to members. There a variety of jobs and needs that can be fulfilled on your schedule, when your time allows, no matter how busy you are. We are extremely lucky to have an organization like NODA in our area and it’s our responsibility as members to make sure the organization continues to succeed into the future!! Hidden Treasures: Highland Meadows By Sally Burton
H
ave you ever wondered what other barns look like? Have you wanted to be a fly on a wall and check them out? Did you enjoy our preview article last month about Piccolo Pines? This new series called Hidden Treasures will introduce you to many of the local barns in our area. Monthly articles written by Sally Burton and Sarah Freeman will take you inside these barns for a look at our many Hidden Treasures. The feeling of peace and tranquility fills the land known as Highland Meadows, owned by Victoria Patterson-Pirko. The 3o plus minute drive from “in town” gives you time to relax and leave the troubles of real life behind. As you pull into the short drive way, you look ahead into the barn knowing there are seven eager horses waiting to see you for snuggles and love. The barn, a repurposed cow barn originally built in the 1950’s, now holds nine stalls. Most of the stalls measure 10 by 18 feet with a walk out back door that opens into several 2 acre pastures and paddocks that the horses are free to roam at will. The stalls are built from wood from the property and have the unique feature of removable walls. So one large sized stall can easily become double in size for a horse who needs stall rest or a larger home. Each stall also has a separate electric outlet so fans and lights can be personalized to each horse’s needs. The stalls have been picked clean and are deeply bedded with over six inches of pine shavings. The barn has high ceilings with alfalfa stored above for the older equines who are lucky to call Highland Meadows their home. Cats mill about, totally comfortable in their oasis, sitting on hay bales, meowing from the loft above, or looking to cuddle with the closest human. The tack room holds all the gear necessary to keep the horses happy in their work and includes a refrigerator that has been fashioned into saddle storage maintaining proper humidity and temperature year round to ensure a long life for the saddles that lie within. The aisle is comfortably wide and easily accommodates a horse in cross ties and various tack hanging off strategically placed hooks throughout. with the option of exploring the out of doors if the mood strikes. Walking out the back door of the barn takes you into a very spacious indoor ring with huge windows on the wall that open to let fresh air and breezes in to the ring. Two doors mid- way through the ring and a front and rear door that are easily opened give the airy feel of riding outside without the beating sun overhead. The footing is excellent and is kept damp using a creative watering system designed (as have many of the farms unique features) by Victoria’s late husband Rick that uses captured rain water making the 70 by 200 foot indoor a dream to ride in. Jump poles line the walls for those wanting to work on cavaletti or jumping. A homemade 4 step mounting block is easily accessible and makes climbing on to a 17+ hand horse a breeze. There are mirrors placed strategically along the ring that make checking your form an easy task, but if that is too daunting you can always look out the open windows for the terrific views outside of the ring! Next to the indoor ring is a huge, brand new building, currently filled with eight hay wagons stuffed with 2300 bales of hay that was all grown on the 25 acres of hay fields on the property. Another storage building houses the variety of farm equipment necessary to keep the farm running. Behind the buildings is an 80 by 220 foot outdoor sand ring ready for use by dressage enthusiasts. A regulation size large dressage ring is set up in the summer months to simulate show conditions. The property continues as far back as the eye can see to a tree line and contains 67 total acres. Trail riding, hacks around the hay fields and cooling rides on fall days beckon to all who gaze out behind the indoor ring. At the back end of the property is an oak tree thought to be close to 175 years old based on tree width and is a home to a vast array of wildlife. Wild turkey, deer, owls, hawks and many other wild critters share the property with the horses. Highland Meadows is a magnet for animals and humans alike, a peaceful place to pursue your passion. What’s in a Name? “Jasper” By Sara Justice

2016 Schooling Shows, Behind the Scenes! By Sally Burton, Schooling Show Manager
W
hen I took the job as the NODA schooling show manager, I was told, “This job is easy. Just set up judges, venues and be kind to people.” I can honestly say there is A LOT more to it than that. But one of the best things about this job has been meeting all of the wonderful NODA members and learning about the horse show business from the inside! I have had the pleasure of working with Jen Tulleners this year. And as long as we are being honest, I will tell you I would NEVER want her job. The show secretary job is very difficult. I am going to attempt to tell you SOME of the things that the show secretary for our schooling shows has to do. I will forget a lot of it, but just understand that this job is not for the meek. We both appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we try to do the best we can to run efficient, educational schooling shows. To start- Jen receives all the entries via mail or email, then she has to enter each one into the computer program, making sure that it is correct. She has to keep track of all the entries, Coggins tests, TIP numbers, juniors, amateurs, professionals, who requires what, special requests and all the rules. Once the entries are in the program it is not as easy as pressing a button, although far easier than hand scheduling. Jen needs to enter the start time for each class, calculate breaks, lunches, ring changes and personal preferences at times. She looks to see which professionals are riding more than one horse and works to ensure that their times are spread out so they can have easy transition time. She checks to make sure that amateurs are not riding their classes too spread out so they don’t have to get off and get back on. She checks to make sure that judges are getting a good mix of classes and experiences. She also checks to see that riders get the chance to ride before both judges if at all possible. She breaks up large classes into sections so more riders get a chance at a ribbon. And then she emails the schedule for posting.

2016 Schooling Shows, Behind the Scenes!, continued By Sally Burton, Schooling Show Manager The fun begins after the schedule is posted. Jen’s phone and email explode with people asking questions, requesting changes, telling her the class is wrong or the horse is wrong. A lot of people email me also, but I have nothing to do with scheduling, so I can just refer those people back to Jen. Now Jen gets to go back into the schedule to fix any errors she makes (and yes, she is human!) and see if she can accommodate any of the other requests. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But I am quite sure she dreads “schedule posting day.” After the schedule is reworked, it is sent back to our webmaster to be posted again. The night before the show, Jen has to organize entries with rider numbers, print labels and get tests in order ready to go, print off day lists and load up her truck with all the supplies the show secretary needs at the show. Finally things calm down on show day, after the initial rush in the morning of setting up, handing out numbers and handling any crises that occur. After we change the rings from small to large, and the bulk of the issues have been handled, we can relax and let the show run itself with the help of all of our volunteers and Kirsten, the volunteer coordinator. As I am writing this, we are getting ready for our last show together. Jen has decided to give up the reins of the show secretary position. Luckily, Gwendolyn Samuels has stepped up to be the next show secretary. I am so grateful to Jen for all her patience with me, helping me learn my job and letting me show at the same time. As she moves on, I would like to publically thank Jen Tulleners for her hard work and dedication to the NODA Schooling Shows for the past four years! I could not have done this job without your guidance and help this year.
