Greetings from NODA’s President; Niki Sackman Dear NODA Members, The Northern Ohio Dressage Association is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Education Organization

I am writing to inform you of NODA's position regarding the current COVID-19 outbreak.

Arthur

On March 18, The United States Dressage Federation

(USDF) issued a news release regarding the suspension of accepting scores from United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) USEF-licensed/USDF-recognized competitions through April 15th.

Niki Sackman & Raina

They also decided “that any USDF organized or hosted educational events scheduled through the weekend of May 22-24, 2020, will be cancelled with the intention to reschedule them for a future date.”

As a GMO of USDF, I feel it is our responsibility to cancel all NODA educational events through May 24th, and support USDF's decision. At this time, NODA will be cancelling our participation with CADS on April 25th for the Freestyle Clinic, and cancelling the Western Dressage Clinic on May 2nd-3rd.

Also, as a precautionary measure, we are cancelling the May 17th NODA schooling show at Chagrin Valley Farms. Due to the uncertainty of the of the Coronavirus pandemic, NODA must consider the impact on our members, competitors, show staff, volunteers, as well as the boarders and owners of CVF.

Parliamentarian Barb Soukup 440-339-3980 Parliamentarian@nodarider.org

We do not take this decision lightly. If any changes are necessary regarding the requirements to qualify for the NODA Schooling Show Championship and any possible impacts on NODA Year-end Awards, we will address them as needed.

Coronavirus Impact on United States Equestrian Federation Licensed Competitions Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, all USEF owned events, selection trials, training camps, clinics, and activities will be suspended for the next 30 days. USEF strongly recommends that competition organizers suspend all USEF licensed competitions across the country for the next 30 days and that equestrians do not compete for the next 30 days. For those competitions that do run, there will be no accumulation of points, scores, money won, qualifications, or rankings toward any USEF awards programs, USEF owned event, or selection to a US team during this 30-day time period. This includes USEF National Championships. Resources from the CDC, WHO, USOPC, and the FEI are available on usef.org/media/coronavirus-resources. Links found on this webpage provide you with direct access to valuable information on each organization’s website which is updated regularly.

USEF Update on COVID-19: Presidential Modification and Resources by US Equestrian Communications Department | Mar 17, 2020, 12:15 PM EST Dear USEF Members, The COVID-19 Pandemic has created significant challenges the world over and USEF greatly appreciates those of you who have chosen not to compete in accordance with our statement issued on March 13, 2020. USEF extends our thanks to you for joining us in our community-wide effort to responsibly address the COVID-19 virus outbreak. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide our members and competition organizers with updates every 10-14 days, or sooner if warranted, regarding any changes to the USEF’s current position as communicated in our March 13, 2020 letter. A Presidential Modification has been approved to provide the ability to modify rules in response to the COVID-19 virus outbreak as needed. We encourage you to review the information available on the USEF Coronavirus Disease Resources page on a daily basis, as well as your breed/discipline page. This information will help you to understand the current situation and how to best protect yourself, your family and friends whether at the barn or at home. Because situations of this nature can cause anxiety and uncertainty, please remember USEF offers a Member Assistance Program. Members can reach this service by phone at 1-800-633-3353 and are eligible to receive 3 free consultations. USEF values the health, safety and well-being of our staff members. Therefore, beginning Tuesday, March 17, 2020, USEF will be implementing a temporary Flexible Work Plan for our staff. This will enable staff members who can work remotely to do so. For those who may need to be in the office, we will be implementing increased social distancing policies and other measures to protect our staff members. Staff members working remotely will forward their work phones to their cell phones and have access to their email. As such, there will likely be interruptions to service as we transition to this modified format, especially in the first week. We will do our best to have all services fully functioning as quickly as possible. Thank you in advance for your understanding and your patience. At this time, our Customer Care Center remains open. If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact us using this email: CustomerCare@usef.org and your inquiry will be addressed by the appropriate department. Sincerely, Murray S. USDF Suspends Accepting Scores from USEF-licensed/USDF-recognized Competitions For Immediate Release Tuesday, March 17, 2020 Lexington, KY (March 18, 2020) – The United States Dressage Federation™ (USDF) Executive Board held an emergency meeting on Tuesday, March 17, to discuss the impact of the COVID-19 virus on the US dressage community. At this meeting, the USDF Executive Board voted that, effective immediately, all results processing will cease through April 15, 2020. As a result, any scores earned at USEF-licensed/USDF-recognized competitions during this time will not be applicable to any USDF championship or awards programs, nor be recorded as a part of a horse or rider's official record with USDF. This will also apply to scores earned at schooling competitions participating in the USDF Regional Schooling Show Awards Program. USDF will continue to assess the situation on a daily basis and will update our position as circumstances warrant. Additionally, the USDF Executive Board voted to waive their existing policy for any USEF-licensed/USDF-recognized competition that chooses to cancel their event, due to this decision, to be refunded any USDF Competition Recognition fee paid, in full, within 30 days of the notice of cancellation to USDF. Additionally, show management of any cancelled competitions shall refund all USDF Regional Dressage Championship qualifying ride fees paid. Fees paid for the purpose of participating in the USDF Regional Schooling Show Awards Program, by affected schooling competitions, will also be refunded, in full, within 30 days of notice to USDF. It was also decided that any USDF organized or hosted educational events scheduled through the weekend of May 22-24, 2020, will be cancelled with the intention to reschedule them for a future date. USDF President Lisa Gorretta spoke of the decisions, “We have not made these decisions without careful consideration of the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic upon our members, staff, volunteers, the sport, and our entire dressage community. Following the lead of our NGB, US Equestrian, for this initial period of the suspension of results will allow us to monitor this national emergency and the directions of the CDC and other authorities, in order to address future developments and issues as they may arise. We are hopeful that our country will benefit from swift actions from everyone and a resulting shorter duration of this life-threatening virus outbreak.” To access Coronavirus Resources, visit the USEF website at www.usef.org/media/coronavirus-resources. A Letter From NODA’s Newsletter Editor Dear NODA members and friends, By the time you read this newsletter, all of us are conversant in the ways of “social distancing” and what that means for each of us and our horses. Whether you’re working in a new way, hunkered down at home, or out searching for a roll of toilet paper; we’re all in a new reality and maybe need a mental break. On page 15 there’s online links where you can lose yourself in the world of horses; learn how to scribe or ride a half pass; take some online courses; or binge watch past equestrian events. You might even want to step up to the Region 2 USDF University Diploma Challenge on page 19. Of course, there’s always the USEF Rulebook—clinicians always tell us to review it! Hopefully, you’ll find something of interest and it will help pass the time. Fran Cverna, our Historian, has given us a look at some famous horses from the past on page 22 and Arielle Brodkey, Director at Large, has written up her notes from a presentation by Dr. Hilary Clayton, DVM, “What's New in Bits and Bridles” on page 13. I am grateful to have a variety of voices on our newsletter pages, so, if you have an idea for article– I am eager to hear it.

No one knows what May holds, but being physically apart does not mean losing touch. Why don’t we share photos and a sentence or two about what you/you and your horse(s) are or are NOT doing. Whether you’re here in northeast Ohio or you’ve moved elsewhere in the country, please, join in! Issue 5 of the NODA News would be so much cheerier with each of you in it! If you’d like to share, please send your photo and a couple of sentences to Mosie-editor@nodarider.org by April 15. I’d like to close by saying that our NODA executive board is amazing and adapting quickly to conference calling, phone calls, and emails to lead the board. After working so hard all winter, it’s not easy to cancel events that members are looking forward to, but board members continue their work on future events. Keep your eye on NODA’s website at www.nodarider.org.

Looking forward to hearing from each of you, Mosie Welch, NODA Newsletter Editor

Notes From The 2019 USDF National Convention in Savannah, Georgia “What's New in Bits and Bridles” by Arielle Brodkey Every year internationally respected experts present their thoughts and research on a variety of subjects in seminars at the USDF national convention. At the December 2019 meeting in Savannah, Georgia, speakers included worldrenowned equine veterinarian Dr. Hilary S. Clayton; Olympic medalist and U.S. Dressage Development Coach Charlotte Bredahl, and World Cup rider/ S-judge and favorite competition commentator Kathy Connelly. This article is one in a series based on notes taken on subjects presented by these authorities and others at the 2019 convention.

“What's New in Bits and Bridles” Notes from a Session with Dr. Hilary Clayton Does it go without saying that a comfortable bridle is key to a horse's happiness in his work? As Hilary Clayton puts it, “A horse that feels good in its bridle is obviously more likely to be a happy partner in dressage.” Luckily for our horses, new technology has produced bits and bridles that influence our horses' comfort in profound ways. Studies into specific areas of equine anatomy and how parts of the bridle affect those areas has made great improvements in the design of bits and bridles. Dr. Clayton targeted four areas as being crucial to a horse's comfort: the crown piece, the noseband, the browband, and the bit. Two features of the crown piece, the part that lies behind the ears, are especially important: the shape and the padding. During normal work pressure transfers up from the bit through the cheek pieces to the sensitive area behind the horse's ears. A padded crown piece mitigates this pressure. All additional strapping should rest on top of the padding not below it, which would compromise the affect of the padding. The basic shape should be straight with anatomically specific curves arcing away from the ears allowing them to pivot freely and painlessly. Moving the crown piece back away from the ears is not a solution because this can put a great deal of pressure on the very fragile, first cervical vertebrae area. In fact, it is against USDF rules to place the crown piece on top of C1. The noseband, too, should be padded, and it should appear horizontal from the front view. Drop nosebands should not be tightened so much that they cause the main noseband to dip down. A main noseband with an integral loop for a drop strap is greatly preferred over a “flash” (removable, buckle-on) drop noseband because the strap used to attach the flash runs under the padding thereby compromising the padding and creating discomfort. NODA News 2020, Page 13

Clayton does not feel that “crank” nosebands are harsh as long as they are used correctly, and they are not tightened so much that the horse's skin is pinched. The tightness of a noseband should not be tested with two fingers under the top part of the strap but from the side. Placing fingers under the top of the noseband could result in wrenched or broken fingers were the horse to toss its head or shy. Browband fit is extremely important. A tight browband can pull the cheek pieces and, perhaps, their buckles onto the temporal joint and nerve putting pressure on and causing pain to this extremely sensitive area. On the other hand, a loose browband will not secure the bridle on the horse's head should the horse shake his head. Before choosing a bit for your horse, you should know the shape of his palate (the roof of his mouth). Some horses have arched palates; some have flatter ones. Your horse's dentist or vet can help you identify the shape. The horse with an arched palate may go well in a single-jointed bit; the horse with a flat palate will likely be more comfortable with a double jointed bit with a center piece that lies flat on his tongue rather than sticking up and hitting the roof of his mouth. Horses that hang on the bit might be trying to get pressure away from the flat palate. A bit with bent cannons may improve the situation. When a rider is interested in introducing the double bridle, Clayton suggests a transition involving a snaffle with two rings and two reins and a curb strap to promote acceptance of the idea of a double bridle and to give the rider confidence. An NS Tranz Angled Lozenge Universal bit is good for this stage. Good combinations of double bits are the Tranz Angled Lozenge Bridoon which takes up very little room in the mouth with the Slimma Weymouth which offers extra lift from the shoulder and more control. It is not, however, considered severe.

With all these technological changes and comfort-friendly design improvements, no wonder our bits and bridles are becoming so expensive! Dr. Hilary Clayton BVMS, PhD, DACVSMR, MRCVS, equestrian, veterinarian, author, researcher, and clinician is known internationally for her ongoing contribution to the understanding of equine biomechanics particularly relating to performance and conditioning. Dr. Clayton’s targeted studies in bitting, saddle fit biometrics, kinematics and kinetics, and locomotion have provided valuable insight into the mechanics of equine sports, the interaction between rider and horse, and the effects of various rehabilitation techniques.

Horses of the Past with Historian Fran Cverna Godolphin Arabian Any child who has read Marguerite Henry's "King of the Wind" knows a little something about the Godolphin Arabian, though the novel is a highly fictionalized version of the stallion's life. What isn't fiction is that this famous Arabian horse is credited as being one of the founding sires of the thoroughbred breed. But before becoming the Godolphin Arabian, the young horse experienced quite a journey. Likely born in Tunisia, the stallion was given to Louis XV of France in 1730 as a diplomatic gift. The unimpressed king didn't keep the horse and instead the stallion eventually made his way into the hands of the Earl of Godolphin, from whom he got his name. The stallion was the sire of several outstanding race horses, and his genetic impression on thoroughbred horses lives on even today. According to Godolphin.com, "The Godolphin Arabian died in 1753, aged 29 and is buried at Wandlebury Hall in Cambridgeshire. His lasting influence on succeeding generations of thoroughbreds can be gauged from the fact that 50 years after his death, the first 76 British Classic winners had at least one strain of him in their pedigree. Many great modern champions such as Seabiscuit and Man o' War have been descendants of the Godolphin Arabian." Beautiful Jim Key Famous horses aren't only found on battlegrounds or race tracks <or in dressage rings>. The story of Beautiful Jim Key takes a different turn. This handsome horse was a performer during the turn of the 20th century. He was known as the smartest horse on Earth and could, among many skills, count and do math, spell words by selecting letters from an alphabet, cite Bible verses, tell time, use a phone, and take cash to a cash register and bring back correct change. The horse and his trainer were a huge act, traveling around the country performing before amazed audiences from 1897 to 1906. They were the biggest act of the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. By the end of their tours, they were seen by an estimated 10 million people. But perhaps equally as wonderful as the horse’s abilities was the story of his trainer. "Dr." William Key was a former slave and a self-taught veterinarian who advocated for the kind treatment of animals. He trained Beautiful Jim without the use of a whip. Anita Lequoia writes, "Animal organizations took note of the excellent treatment Beautiful Jim received, and activists that might normally picket animal acts instead presented Dr. Key and Jim with awards! William Key was the first African American recipient of MSPCA's Humanitarian Gold Medal, and Beautiful Jim Key was the first non-human recipient of multiple humane and literacy awards. Two million children joined the 'Jim Key Band of Mercy' and signed his pledge. The pledge simply stated, 'I promise to be kind to animals.' That’s a mighty fine pledge!" Together, Doc Key and Beautiful Jim made strides toward the humane treatment of animals, and breaking down barriers for African Americans. As Mim Eichler Rivas writes on the Beautiful Jim Key website, "The idea that a horse could actually do all that he appeared to do remains as controversial today as it did a century ago, probably more so. Yet what is crucial is that by appearing to do all that was claimed of him, Beautiful Jim Key and Dr. William Key managed to change the world."
