Bio - Niki Sackman (continued) My future goals include the desire to become a certified show secretary. I currently own an 18 year old American Paint Horse, Mercedes Colortyme (aka: Raina), who I have owned since she was six and have been blessed to compete her in both classical dressage through 1st Level and schooling 2nd Level and western dressage through Level 4 which is the highest level offered in western dressage. I also enjoy trail riding with her. I have owned many horses since childhood and grew up riding 4-H (all the disciplines) and then eventually hunters before discovering my love of dressage. In my professional career I have worked for a municipal government for over 20 years and am a Master Municipal Clerk and serve as the city’s records manager and document management software (OnBase by Hyland Software) system administrator. I oversee five boards and commissions, handle police and fire civil service testing, and work in the Department of Planning and Economic Development with a focus on urban planning and computer software. Prior to 1998 I had an interesting resume, owning my own landscape design and maintenance business; managing an A circuit hunter farm and professional groom; insurance claims; custom art framing; and yes, even this off the wall career – a mechanic for a Chevy dealer working on their rental fleet doing oil changes, exhaust jobs, brakes job and delivery processing of new vehicles off the car carriers and completed Chevy’s Service Advisor program at the time. I’m definitely well-rounded and not afraid of a challenge or trying something new. I would love the opportunity to become NODA’s President.
Bio - Janice Lawrenz
Although I've been riding since age 4, I began learning dressage as a Lake Erie College student in 1994. I'll admit, this former H/J rider hated it at first. But, I grew to love the precision of the sport, and the partnership that is created between horse and rider. My first horse, Ensigne, was an OTTB, and we progressed as a team from Training level through Intermediaire I. (The score wasn't the best, but I certainly didn't embarrass myself.) My current horse, Aidenandabettin (another OTTB), is currently schooling Second level. I try to balance my "barn time" with my "real job" of Surgical Technology Program Director at Lakeland Community College. I also stay current in my profession by scrubbing open heart surgery cases at Cleveland Clinic when I can! What makes NODA great is the tradition of volunteerism among its members. By volunteering, I have learned a tremendous amount about our sport. I began volunteering in the mid-1990s at schooling shows, then at the recognized competition. I then got involved with the NODA Board, as Newsletter Editor. I was then elected to the Executive Board: I've served the NODA members as past Secretary, Vice President and President. I have also logged several years as manager of the NODA Recognized competitions. My volunteerism allowed me to be a past recipient of The Dressage Foundation's Gifted Scholarship (for Region 2), which I used for an intensive week-long clinic with Major Miguel Tavora. I have learned from great teachers and friends (not going to name-drop...you know who you are!), and I believe each of us can learn something from everyone we meet. Since 1969, we have built a strong, supportive and diverse community in Northern Ohio. As dressage riders, we have a camaraderie between professionals, adult amateurs and juniors, that I've not found anywhere else in the equestrian world. From the beginner taking their first dressage lesson to the seasoned FEI rider, our members support each other. We may be on different paths, but our destination is the same: betterment of horse and rider. I would like you to consider re-electing me as NODA President. I believe that with strong leadership, teamwork and transparency, we can maintain our strength and grow into the future. As the current president, I encourage you to please mark your calendars for the 6:30 pm, September 6th NODA Open Meeting at the Point East Condo Association, 27500 Cedar Road, Beachwood, Ohio 44122 . You won’t want to miss guest speaker, Jennifer Baumert, 2019 Pan American Games US Bronze and Silver Medalist, as she shares her 2019 Lima, Peru experience! Barb

USEF DR129 Musical Freestyle Ride - Rule Change During the July (2019) USEF Board of Directors (BOD) Meeting the Extraordinary Rule Change Proposal (Tracking ID #042-19) submitted by the US Equestrian Dressage Sport Committee, was discussed. In doing so, the feedback provided by USDF via the USDF Governance Survey along with feedback submitted directly to USEF was considered. The USEF BOD has approved the rule change to DR 129.9, which will go into effect December 1, 2019. The rule change is as follows: DR129 Musical Freestyle Ride. Changes to read: 9. Except for USEF/USDF Championship classes and for FEI Pony Riders, FEI Junior, FEI Young Rider and FEI Para-Equestrian Freestyles, in order to enter a freestyle class at any level, a horse/rider combination must have received a minimum score of 63% for Training through Fourth levels and 60% for FEI levels in the highest test of the declared freestyle level or any test of a higher level at a USEF/USDF licensed Dressage Competition, Federation Licensed or FEI recognized Dressage Competition, or “open” Dressage class (i.e. open to all breeds) at a Federation Licensed Competition held prior to the competition where the horse/rider combination is entered to ride a freestyle class. A photocopy of the test verifying eligibility, or copy of the USDF score verification, must be submitted with the entry for a freestyle class. To see a complete and up to date list of all Extraordinary and Rule Clarifications that were approved, visit the USEF website. www.usef.org

USDF L Education Program Part 1, Session B August 17 & 18 Overview USDF Instructor, Trenna Atkins (USEF S) Endeavor Farm & Walden Inn The riding demonstrations and meals during the NODA sponsored Session B of the USDF L Education Program were held at the beautiful Endeavor Farm in Hudson, Ohio owned by Jeffrey and Danial Rand and managed by Ashley RandTorres. The classroom portion took place three miles away at the Walden Inn theater. Session B was instructed by Trenna Atkins, USEF S Judge and L program faculty member with an apprentice L program faculty member Mike Osinski, FEI 4* Judge/USEF S Judge auditing and providing some instruction. The hot and muggy weekend was punctuated with the occasional pop– up thunder storm, but the demo riders and horses took it all in stride. Judge Atkins commented on the lovely classroom and riding facilities as well as the high quality of the organization and meals. I think participants and auditors agreed! Veronica Holt Dressage Technical Delegate Fund Grant Awarded to Carol Spangler The Dressage Foundation is pleased to announce that the 2019 Veronica Holt Dressage Technical Delegate Grant has been awarded to Carol Spangler of Upland, California. Carol, an adult amateur rider, has been involved in dressage since 2005 and is currently schooling her half Arabian/ Warmblood at Second Level. She has served in many capacities in the Arabian Horse Association, has been a C2 Steward for six years, and is currently completing the requirements for the USEF Dressage Technical Delegate Program. Carol will use the $500 grant to apprentice at shows in Washington. "I would like to thank The Dressage Foundation for the Veronica Holt Fund grant,” said Carol. “I have been on the journey to obtain my Dressage Technical Delegate license for many years and I was truly excited to hear that I had received this grant. I am also very thankful to the donors that have supported this grant and made this possible. This grant comes at the perfect time as I head off to my out-of-state and out-of-region requirements to finish my final apprenticeships. I have loved the learning process, and the community of Technical Delegates has been amazing throughout the whole process.” Up to $500 is available each year from the Veronica Holt Dressage Technical Delegate Fund, to be used by the recipient to pay for costs associated with completing apprenticeship requirements at competitions or attending required TD clinics. As the fund balance grows, the amount and number of grants may increase. The online grant application and more information are available here. For more information about this Fund or to make a donation, visit www.dressagefoundation.org or contact Jenny Johnson at (402)434-8585 or jenny@dressagefoundation.org.
Barnett Fund Awards Grants to Two Instructors The Dressage Foundation's Maryal and Charlie Barnett Continuing Education for Dressage Instructors Fund has awarded grants to two individuals to attend the United States Dressage Federation's Instructor/Trainer Program. Kelsey Dunlap (NC) and Erin Miles (MI) each received a $1,500 grant to further their education as instructors. Kelsey plans to use the grant to attend the Testing Session in Omaha, NE, in October. She said, “I would like to thank TDF and its donors for this opportunity to participate in the Instructor/Trainer Program. My goal has always been to teach and train in a clear, methodical way and I believe this program will give me the tools to improve and progress my training not only to benefit me personally, but my students as well!” Erin will use her grant to attend the Workshops hosted by the Midwest Dressage Association in early 2020. She shared, “I am so excited to receive the Maryal and Charlie Barnett Continuing Education for Instructors grant to participate in the USDF Instructor/Trainer Program. This grant will help me in achieving my goal of becoming a certified dressage instructor and developing my career. I am so thankful to the generous donors who make these grants possible. They make education more obtainable for so many.” Interested instructors can apply for a grant to attend any portion of the Instructor/Trainer Program, including the workshops, pre-certification and testing. Individual grants are awarded twice per year and the next deadline for applications is February 1, 2020. For more information about the Maryal and Charlie Barnett Continuing Education for Dressage Instructors Fund or The Dressage Foundation, please contact Jenny Johnson at (402) 434-8585 or visit www.dressagefoundation.org.
