NODA News 2019, Page 2

Already December, where has 2019 gone! I am hoping everyone had an enjoyable Thanksgiving with friends and family. My husband and I typically are both running so much through the year that we enjoy a quiet day at home together just in slow gear for the day. Of course, horses still get turned out and stalls cleaned but it’s still just being home. Many people have asked me, “How’s retirement going?” My answer with a smile is, “It’s going well.” My days are so busy, I wonder how I ever managed when I had to fit a day job in. HaHa! Last year I purchased a 4-month-old Half ArabHalf Friesian horse called Arthur who has been living in Kentucky. Charma Shunkwiler and I volunteered at the 2019 US Dressage Finals and we brought Arthur home to the BaR S Ranch. Arthur is now 1-1/2 years old. I know, what was I thinking! But If you were to meet US Dressage him, you would understand. Finals

President, Barb Soukup & Hero

Arthur As some of you heard at our fabulous Banquet, we have new Board members. Niki Sackman will take the reins as President for the 2020/2021 term, Rachel Aderhold will be Vice President, Dee Liebenthal remains Treasurer, and Patti Valencic remains Secretary. This is my last letter to you as your President. I want to thank all of you for your support during my term.

The 2019 Banquet is in the books and was another huge success. We had great attendance once again; the silent auction and Chinese raffle were huge hits, no surprise there! The food was good and there were many other raffle and door prizes which were very popular. I would sincerely like to thank all of you that brought items for the Geauga No-Kill Dog Shelter. It was heart warming to see the response to this great organization. Our award-winning website is already filling with 2020 events, so check it out often. If you would like to have a show, clinic or other activity added, e-mail your request with Date, Event Name, Website, Location, Event Contact information to the webmaster at: Webmaster@nodarider.org. Remember, only schooling shows listed on the website with an “L” Certified or higher judge are eligible for NODA Year-End Awards. Check the Calendar for the NODA 2019 Schooling Show Series dates and venues, the annual NODA Ride-A-Test (moved to June), and the very popular NODA Dressage Camp and More for Adult Riders. Mark your calendars for our NEW Recognized Shows dates in June! We have heard your concerns with the HOT July show dates, and we have officially changed our licensed shows to JUNE 27 AND 28TH! All the committees are thinking and planning 2020 activities including clinics, shows and more. Stay tuned to the newsletter, website and Facebook for more information. I think I’ve covered most past and upcoming things of interest, so I will say goodbye as your President and wish for everyone a joyous Holiday season.

Remembering Dagmar Zimmerman 1941 – 2019 NODA Member of 47 Years Dressage Teacher, Trainer, Competitor, Coach, Breeder, USEF R Dressage Judge, Clinician, Animal Lover, NODA’s 4th President, Wife, Mother, Friend Compiled by Historian Fran Cverna

I first met Dagmar in the 1980’s and thought Birchmont Farm was heaven on earth. I believed Dagmar knew everything there was to know about dressage and was very intimidated by her! Many years later my horse Rocky retired with Dagmar’s horse Anno. The two horses became good friends and so did Dagmar and I. Dagmar convinced me to be active with NODA again and I got involved with running the Schooling Shows, met people, and it changed my life. I will miss Dagmar and always treasure memories of our friendship. Dagmar’s daughter Karen Zimmerman Davidson lives in Texas and still subscribes to NODA News. She grew up with NODA, worked at NODA shows as runner, gate, ring master, competitor and trainer herself. Shen remembers building Noda’s first Dressage Ring at Dagmar’s Birchmont Farm on Music Street in Russell. Karen reminded me that Dagmar brought to Ohio dressage education from the dressage masters USDF Hall of Famer Major Anders Lindgren, Gabor Foltenyi and Dr. Henri Van Schaik. Dagmar was the first person at an instructor’s seminar to ask Major Lindgren to give a clinic in this country. Dagmar truly felt the need to grow Dressage in northern Ohio and believed that by having top clinicians teach professionals in the area, those professionals could in turn teach their students and grow the sport of Dressage. Fran Cverna

Left: Dagmar Zimmerman with Dr. Van Schaik, author of Misconceptions and Simple Truths in Dressage.

I met Dagmar many years ago when she was judging a show at Brecksville Stables. Dagmar's main concern has been the correct training and welfare of the horses and she wanted to make sure the horse was a "happy athlete," long before that became a term! I feel very fortunate to have had the chance to ride in her clinics and to have known her as a friend who was always available whether I had a question, needed advice or simply wanted her opinion. Dagmar was very loyal and appreciated the same from her students! I miss her but hope she knows that she made a difference, and I am a better rider because of her. Sabine Walker NODA News 2019, Page 4

Above Dagmar Zimmerman and her husband, Jim.

Dagmar was my trainer in the 1970’s. How fortunate I was to learn from her. She was a true horsewoman, who cared deeply for all animals, as well as a talented rider and trainer! It was so much fun being a part of Birchmont Farm, from her breeding activities, to clinics with Dr. Van Schaik. Fast forward to just a few years ago when Dagmar let my gelding Keegan, retire on her beautiful farm where he lived his last years like a king. I will always cherish my memories of Dagmar. Left: Dagmar Zimmerman at a dressage competition.

What I will miss most about Dagmar is not her advice, her expertise, her encouragement or her passion about the correctness of training the dressage horse, although she shared those willingly with me many times. I will miss her friendship… the twinkle in her eye when we both found something funny, when we were the only ones foolish enough to be out on the road on a winter morning to meet for breakfast, when an evening was incomplete without a stop at the local food stand for green grapes. I will miss her presence on the Music Street of my life, but I wish her well on the next part of her journey. Dianne Braden

My memories of Dagmar go back to early days of NODA! One time she stopped at my house on her way home from the vet with her beautiful Chestnut horse, Camelot, in a trailer! She just parked on the street in front of my house and rang the doorbell— That was so much fun. Her riding lessons were always a challenge— she had a great eye and saw everything! Her stories were always full of adventure and joie de vivre! She touched many, many lives and she will be greatly missed. Patti Ferris

Right: Dagmar riding Monschau, a chestnut upper level gelding she imported and competed.

In the late 80s when I was in the process of relocating from Germany to the United States with my Trakehner, not knowing where to board my horse , it was suggested to me to check with Dagmar as she was a friend of the Trakehner horse as well as a knowledgeable breeder and trainer. Even though I was an Eventer, Dagmar quickly changed us to a dressage team. Because of her horsemanship , knowledge, and experience she was a successful trainer and a gifted teacher, able to pass it on to her students. My last two lessons with Dagmar, just a few months ago, were the best ones I ever had with her. I will never forget. Dagmar also was very active for many years with the American Trakehner Association. She was a successful breeder and Importer of the Trakehner Horse trying to improve the Trakehner bloodlines and reputation in this country. Dagmar will be missed by all those who enjoyed and benefited from her advice. Ursula Stanton-Hicks
