ello NODA members, families, and dressage enthusiasts,

Well the signs are clear, kids are returning to school, the county fairs are in full swing and temps are starting to dip. Yes, we’re heading in to Fall! The Schooling Show Committee continues with their work on the 2018 Schooling Show season. On September 9, we have a great show planned at a new venue in Aurora, Ohio. Thank you Janeen Langowski for hosting this show at beautiful Topline Stables at Walden on September 9th. On October 6th, we head to Chagrin Valley Farms for the NODA Barb Soukup & Hero Open Schooling Show followed on October 7th by the NODA Schooling Show Series Championship. Remember if you want to compete in the October 7th Championship, you must have two qualifying scores from two 2018 NODA Schooling Shows AND four (4) NODA Bucks earned by volunteering at a 2018 NODA Schooling Show. November promises to be a fun month as we’ll be entertained at our Annual Banquet! I’m looking forward to that and hope to see you there enjoying delicious food, visiting with friends and winning beautiful prizes from various raffles, silent auctions, and year-end awards! If you plan to apply for NODA Year-End Awards, you will need four (4) NODA Bucks earned in 2018. Looking back to July, I am very thankful we had great weather and great sponsors that made for a great 2018 NODA Recognized Show weekend. The improvements made by Chagrin Valley farm were greatly appreciated all who attended. The new footing was amazing and held up beautifully for all the rides. The July 21 Dressage 2018 Show included the popular and well-attended Competitor Party. Delicious food and drinks were available thanks to our party sponsors, Christine Thompson and Arielle Brodkey. The Saturday evening Musical Freestyle Competition was fabulous. Thank you to Betsy Juliano for her generous sponsorship of this popular annual event. The volunteers who worked the show weekend were amazing and helped ensure the shows ran smoothly. Thank you All! The Education Committee is finalizing the New 2019 Tests Seminar with Margaret Freeman “S” for January 2019. This seminar will help you learn about the new tests which are effective for the 2019 show season. Keep your eyes open for more information to come. You may even be able to sign up for the seminar at the November NODA Banquet. Our NODA Newsletter staff has changed. April Woodward, co-editor for the past 4 years, will now be devoting her time and energy to her family, her new job, competing in horse shows, AND managing her family’s stable, Princeton Ridge Farms in Huntsburg Ohio. Our sincere thanks to you, April, for your help and contributions to the newsletter. Webmaster, Linda Cooley, will be Interim Co-Editor working closely with Co-Editor, Heidi Miller, and Advertising/Classifieds Editor, Jill Voigt, as we begin the search for a new coeditor. More details coming soon! With the Awards Banquet approaching in November, the Banquet Committee will be accepting Silent Auction Donations. The donation and advertising form will be on the website soon. Donations may be in the form of cash, gift card, individual item, services, or gift basket. Please direct any questions to Patty Keim, Banquet Co-chair at SilentAuction@nodarider.org or (330) 350-2775. Thank you for being a supporting part of NODA. Have a great month and ride on! Aerie’s Legacy By Janna Dresing

A legacy is defined as a gift bestowed upon a recipient.

While we have no written prose from my daughter’s horse of a lifetime, Aerie, we have many signs that have arrived since his passing. We would be hard pressed not to feel he was sending us our gifts in other ways. For those of you who need a quick catch up, my daughter lost her horse in an unfortunate accident post colic surgery. In a blink of an eye we went from hopeful that this incredible horse that had given his all to bring my daughter from a Starter Division rider in Eventing to a competitive dressage rider at Third Level, to watching my daughter lie on top of him and hold his head as she wished her lovely partner a sweet passing. This horse was my daughter’s everything, her Friday night date, her escape from adolescent angst, her reason to get up when skies were gray, and her security blanket that she took with her to college. He taught her what it was to be responsible, to be altruistic, to love unconditionally, to forgive and most importantly, he gave her a membership into the world of horse owners. (Photos on this page by Kate Poulin)

NODA News 2018 Page 6

Horse owners are a wonderful breed. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The most important quality they all share is that they are horse lovers. They eat, sleep and breathe horses. They may be from completely different socioeconomic statuses, different areas of the world, or different disciplines, but the main thing they share is their ability to talk horse. It’s a wonderful world, the “Horse World”. I believe most members are born with the membership and become active members early on. They can spot each other in a crowd, by their clothing, jewelry or tan lines. They understand each other and their desire to be free on the back of their horse or just grooming their feelings out for hours on end. These horse owners from across the country band together to support one of their own at a time of great despair. My daughter knew them from competing against them, taking clinics with them, going to school with them, or just being one with them in their love for all things horses. These “friends” gave their time, their love, their shoulders to cry on, and most importantly, their friendship to a fellow horse woman. They understood the grief, the loss of a partner and family member.

June 2018 D4K Team Clinic with Lendon Gray at Chagrin Valley Farms

They understood it all and listened when she needed to tell her story, read when she wrote about it, understood it, and commented their support. There was no division between disciplines, there was no judgement, there was just overwhelming support. It helped a young woman get through a terrible experience and learn from it.

Aerie’s Legacy (continued) By Janna Dresing She is back to work doing what she has found she loves, teaching young children to ride at a camp across town. She is catch riding for others and enjoying using the knowledge she has gained to work on other horses while she waits for that next horse to find her.

and to realize how truly strong she was without having had her time with him? Eventually. Did she learn compassion for another sooner than she may have otherwise have learned it? I think so. I believe Aerie’s legacy was the many lessons he taught my daughter over the years, and to show her that even when he was gone she could still be all that he had taught her to be in their short time together, and more.

The last score for her bronze may have to wait awhile but the joy she had earning the prior scores with Aerie will always stand as a sign of her commitment to the redheaded ‘Porche’ who misbehaved constantly, loved her wholly, and taught her everything.

Thank you for your gifts, Aerie, that continue to help my daughter mature in a difficult world and become stronger and wiser. You will forever be her heart horse and therefore mine, too.

Would my daughter have had this experience so early on in her life had it not been for the loss of her partner? I doubt it. Would she have learned how to survive through great loss

We have had a phenomenal summer of shows,

with all the shows filling within a few days. If you would like to compete in a NODA show, your best bet is to register online or mail your entry ON OPENING DAY to ensure a spot. A few things to note: these shows are FULL and so special requests most of the time cannot be given as they would upset the flow of a very busy day. Please make sure your entry is complete (or you and all necessary parties) sign at the show, and that the Coggins matches the name of your horse! If you call your horse “Buttercup” but his name on the Coggins is “The Wild Fruitfly”, how do we know? Paying attention to these details helps the show office tremendously. We are going to a new venue in September! Thank you to Janeen Langowski-Grava for offering Topline Stables as a show venue this year. Please note a few things: parking will be tight- follow the instructions of the parking attendant. The warm up will be in the indoor ring with competition rings in the new footing of the outdoor ring. Lunging will be available only in a pasture. If you come to warm up the day before the show you will need to fill out a liability release- please see a barn employee before you ride. This is the last show that you can earn qualifying scores for the Championship show, so we expect it to fill quickly. Speaking of qualifying . . . you need 2 qualifying scores from two shows and to volunteer one full shift at a schooling show in order to compete in the Championship Show. There will be a list online, but please do not wait until the last minute to volunteer. And of course, we will need volunteers for the Championship show, so if you are not competing, please volunteer. Our Rocky River show was wonderful! The weather cooperated well, we had super judging and plenty of volunteers as the Valley Riding crew stepped up again this year to help in every way possible. Luckily, Clara Etzel, “L” with Distinction, stepped in to judge for us as our scheduled judge had many flight problems and was not able to make it to Cleveland in time to judge. So special thanks to Clara Etzel and Rhianna Pankhurst, “L with Distinction” who traveled from Pittsburgh area to judge this show! Thanks to all the following amazing volunteers! Ring set up: Barb Bower, Olivia Fietkiewicz, Lauren Heba, Sue Horst, Jordan Jacques, Rachel Jelen, Sydney Kindrat, Anna/Rich/Sue Pasela, Maria Sandy, Sophie Ratvasky and Lisa Zitiello. Ring change crew and the Ring tear down: a fabulous Valley Riding crew. WE appreciate Valley Riding/Rocky River Stable for hosting and Margaret McElhany and Jane Papke for all their work for our event! Show Volunteers: Clare Barnett, Elena Braun, Josephine Cooper, Olivia Fietkiewicz, Peggi Ignagni, Noelle Ignani, Patty Keim, Lee and Connie Kelling, Kathy Kirchner, Lesley Matt, Leigh Mooney, Danielle Northup, Sophie Ratvasky, Susan Powers, Maria Sandy, Kim Shepard, Agatha Smithers, Lea Wojtiewicz, Taya Workum-Byers, and Lara Young. Another great show is in the books! Join us, Sally Burton, show manager, Niki Sackman, show secretary, and Kirsten Thomas, volunteer coordinator for our remaining shows- September 9 at Topline Stables, October 6 at Chagrin Valley Farms and October 7 for the Championship Show!
