Nicolaas Maritz se kunspraktyk lê gebakermat in die Suider-Afrikaanse landskap. Geiinspireer deur die vorme, kleure en wesens van hierdie arena, het hy oor die laaste dertig jaar ‘n unieke oeuvre geskep wat herkenbaar is vanwee ‘n idiosinkratiese uitgangspunt asmede die tasbaarheid van sy werksproses. Vreemde teenstellings – van die werklikheid en die fantasie, die natuurlike en die kunsmatige, eenvoud en kompleksiteit, en die humoristiese met die onheilspellende – is aspekte wat Maritz se kuns kenmerk. Die groep onlangse skilderye op hierdie tentoonstelling verteenwoordig drie aaneensluitende aspekte van die kunstenaar se oeuvre; stillewe, landskap en ‘gedaantes’. Met tussenverwysings oor gedeelde gestalte, kleur en betekenis, hou die werke op verskeie vlakke verband met mekaar. Veral by wyse van ‘n speelse wisselwerking tussen die onooglopende vreemdheid van doodgewone realiteite en die eksotisme van vreemder verbeeldingsbeelde, word die gewaarwording van ‘n nuwe, saamgestelde en eie kunstenaarswereld kleurvol gedaante gegee.
INLEIDING
Nicolaas Maritz’s artistic roots are deeply embedded in the Southern African landscape. Drawing inspiration from its shapes, its colours and its creatures, he has, over the past thirty years, created a unique body of work, instantly recognizable by virtue of the idiosyncrasy of his vision and the immediacy of the manner in which it is realized. Curious juxtapositions – of the real and the fantastical, the natural and the artificial, the simple and the complex, the humorous and the sinister – are a defining characteristic of Maritz’s art. The group of recent paintings on this exhibition represent three inter-linked aspects of the artist’s oeuvre; still life, landscape and ‘apparitions’. With cross references to shared figuration, colour and meaning, the works relate to each other on various levels. A playful interplay between the depiction of unobtrusive ordinary realities, and the exoticism of stranger images from the imagination, brings a new, composite and individualised world colourfully to life.
