Spring Awakening (Frühlings Erwachen, 1929, by Richard Oswald)
WEIMAR CINEMA REVISITED EYE Film Institute Netherlands will deliver the restored version of German classic SPRING AWAKENING (FRÜHLINGS ERWACHEN, 1929, by Richard Oswald) to Berlin in February for the festival’s ‘Weimar Cinema Revisited’ retrospective. The tragedy concerns two young adults growing up in oppressive middle-class society, finding ways to fight back and discovering as individuals who they truly are. The film was distributed in The Netherlands by the Filmliga between 1929 and 1933. The EYE restoration was undertaken in 2008. The retrospective of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival will focus on the great variety of cinema in the Weimar era. A hundred years ago, at the end of World War I, one of the most productive and influential phases in German filmmaking began, a creative era that went on to shape the international perception of the country’s film culture, even to the present day. Two Dutch directors and one Dutch producer have been selected for Berlinale Talents, the annual summit and networking platform of the Berlin International Film Festival for 250 outstanding creatives from the fields of film and drama series. The directors are Floor van der Meulen who will present the first Dutch project selected for Berlinale Talents Script Station, METHUSALEM and Eliane Esther Bots whose short documentary THE BRICK HOUSE was selected at the 2017 Berlinale Forum Expanded. The Talents selected producer is Joram Willink from BIND whose most recent project MASCOT by Director Remy van Heugten (SON OF MINE) has also been selected for the Talent Project Market, a collaboration with the Berlinale Co-Production Market.

JONAS SMULDERS EFP SHOOTING STAR 2018 Dutch actor Jonas Smulders has been selected as a European Shooting Star for the 68th Berlin International Film Festival. Jonas is acknowledged as one of the ten most gifted European performers by a jury of acclaimed industry figures for the 21st edition of the Shooting Stars event. Jonas Smulders played his first leading role in Mees Peijnburg's graduation film EVEN COWBOYS GET TO CRY. Next up, was a lead role in KETAMINE by Rogier Hesp. He received Best Actor Golden Calf in 2015 for his lead role in Mees Peijnenburg's film WE WILL NEVER BE ROYALS. The same year he was awarded the Spotlight European Breakthrough in Kilkenny. Subsequently, he took the lead in Bram Schouw's debut feature, BROTHERS in 2017 and most recently, he starred in OPEN SEAS by Michiel van Erp and Shady El-Hamus' short film, BEING THERE for which Jonas also wrote the script. EFP EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS, one of EFP's flagship programmes, has placed some of the most promising young actors from all over Europe into the limelight over the past 20 years and proven to be an essential stepping stone for launching their international careers.

MIJKE DE JONG JURY - 21ST EUROPEAN SHOOTING STARS The award-winning Dutch director Mijke de Jong (LAYLA M. – this year’s Oscar entry from The Netherlands), is a Jury member for Shooting Stars 2018. Mijke has shown great social engagement in her work over the past 25 years: starting with her co-authored feature film debut, LOVE HURTS (1992), which won the Special Jury Prize in Locarno, through to her latest film, LAYLA M. (2016). The much-lauded drama about the radicalisation of a young Muslim growing up in Amsterdam is this year’s Oscar entry from The Netherlands. De Jong’s international breakthrough came with the award-winning film, BLUEBIRD (2004), which premiered in Toronto and won the Crystal Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival 2005. Her other outstanding works include JOY (2010), which received the Best Feature Film Award in The Netherlands.
