Consider Donut THE

Love Mini Donuts on-site dessert service

If asked to name the th I ngs one associates with a wedding, most people would say “wedding cake.” It’s a symbolic tradition that dates back thousands of years but in the last hundred or so, wedding cakes have come to look much the same: three-tiered sponge and white frosting, topped with a plastic miniature of the betrothed. However, more and more couples are making room for new traditions, creating unique and memorable experiences for themselves and their guests. Love Mini Donuts, a family owned and operated mobile donut fryer business, can help you do just that.

Consider the donut. An American way of life. A treat beloved by all. But on your wedding day? The answer is an emphatic “yes.”

For those of us who have spent time browsing the internet for wedding inspiration, donuts are not an entirely new wedding dessert option. A simple Pinterest search returns dozens of ideas — baskets of donut holes, donut boards, donuts on the wedding cake. And rightfully so. Donuts are a perfect handheld treat, no extra cutlery required. A variety of donuts gives guests the ability to pick a dessert in a flavor of their choosing. While they can certainly be made formal with the right display, donuts are a great addition to a rustic wedding and a fun, relaxed way to serve your guests (or let them serve themselves) something tasty.

It is excellent news, then, that you can have fresh, beautifully decorated donuts catered for

your big day right here in Humboldt County. Founded by local husband and wife duo Joanna Ortiz and José Luis Garcicnuño, the Fortuna-based Love Mini Donuts has been piping out these tiny fried frosted morsels for more than 10 years. What started as a dream on San Francisco’s Pier 39 transformed into a way to help support their son’s traveling soccer career and blossomed into a bustling side-business. If you’re local, you may have already seen Love Mini Donuts embraced by the community at the Humboldt County Fair, local fundraising events, the Eureka Friday Night Markets and the Something Blue Wedding Show.

While love is certainly the most important ingredient in the recipe for these bite-sized desserts, Joanna says all other ingredients are organic and locally sourced when possible. Love Mini Donuts start out as a simple homemade batter, which is then circled carefully into a mobile deep fryer, cooked to golden perfection and blanketed with sweet glaze. Love Mini Donuts’ glazes also are handmade, and come in an array of classic flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, caramel and red velvet, and unexpected ones like lavender or margarita. Topped with edible pearls, golden candy leaves, fondant bumblebees, sprinkles or hearts, these itty-bitty

confections pack a delightful visual punch as big as a three-tiered cake.

There are a few ways to incorporate Love Mini Donuts into a wedding menu and itinerary. For extra-fresh, piping-hot mini donuts, Love Mini Donuts offers on-site donut service. Joanna and José will bring everything needed for an event, including mobile fryer, a donut bar cart with sauces, toppings, cups, forks and napkins, and two hours of unlimited freshly made mini donuts. Unlimited. Mini. Donuts. These DIY treats offer an interactive element, keeping guests (both mini and adult-sized) entertained between events and freeing them (if only temporarily) from assigned seating.

The last wedding they catered “was really fun for everyone,” says Joanna. “We had a great time being there and interacting with guests, and you could tell the guests were having fun and enjoying the service, too.”

If a preplanned donut display is preferred, couples can order donuts for pick-up or delivery to the Humboldt County venue of choice. Flavor combinations and decorations can be customized to match the color or suit the theme of the wedding, as well as the palate of the newlyweds. Donuts are made fresh day-of, so

guests get the crusty crunch expected of this classic treat. Love Mini Donuts has catered weddings with guests numbering from 50 to 300.

“We like to keep it simple. We keep it small and focus on quality,” says Joanna. “We make them fresh. Decorate them. Deliver them.” Perhaps simplicity is the secret to the universal appeal of donuts and why they make an excellent addition to a wedding day menu.

Those of us who have spent time dreaming up our big day have certainly toiled over dessert. Many have come to the conclusion that it can be remarkably impactful to do things a little different. A DIY donut bar might be the element of surprise that makes your special day all the more special. This doesn’t mean you have to completely abandon the traditional wedding cake in favor of its more portable pastry cousin. As it turns out, you can have your cake and donuts, too! ™

The Moonstone Beach House and the River Orchard at Luna Farm

WINDING RIVERS, sparkling beaches, rolling pastures, enchanting forests — we seem to have it all here on the North Coast. Only a place like Humboldt County can offer wedding venues that celebrate the region and its community in such distinctly beautiful locales. And we’re topping the already long list of fairytale wedding locations with two new venues: The River Orchard at Luna Farm and the Moonstone Beach House.

Most Humboldt County residents have spent at least one a ernoon on Moonstone Beach, where a vast stretch of sand blends seamlessly into the pearly, glistening horizon. Nowhere has a more intimate view of this scene than the Moonstone Beach House. Nestled along the cli side a few steps away from the beach, this event venue o ers a spectacular vista, and everything else needed for a dream wedding.

Owners Stacie and Matthew Marshall purchased the Beach House in October of 2022. Stacie, who has years of event planning under her belt, and her husband Ma hew, who grew up in Humboldt County, saw the need for an event venue like this. “We wanted to create a space for visitors and the community to [experience] this magical place,” says Stacie. When the Beach House went on the market, they knew it was the

right choice. The Beach House, a familiar sight for locals, originally became an event venue in the early 1960s under the ownership of Sam Merryman. He, his family and the community were an active part of the events hosted there for years. Now, Stacie and Matthew hope to keep that same spirit intact as they breathe new life into the space. “We live within walking distance, and just up the street are a photographer, a winemaker and a florist. … We want to keep this place alive for visitors and our community to enjoy,” says Stacie.

The Moonstone Beach House takes a customizable approach to event hosting, while still offering necessary support for an event to run smoothly. “We are introducing this as a fully stocked DIY event venue. We have all the necessary supplies, so couples can focus on styling the event, and planning their flowers, entertainment and food,” says Stacie. Included in the rental are linens, glassware, bar supplies, silverware, ceremony chairs and an arch for a beach ceremony. The Beach House offers a two-day rental, so couples and their coordinators can get in the space for rehearsal and set up before the big day. Parking at

the Beach House and at Moonstone Grill can also be reserved for ease of access. Stacie and her crew will even help set up and break down the event, so couples don’t have to worry about dirty dishes or soiled linens after the celebration is over.

Stacie is happy to provide vendor recommendations and seating templates, but notes, “I really like keeping it open for guests to have the kind of food and drinks they want, especially because weddings are so personal.”

The Moonstone Beach House takes full advantage of the surrounding beauty. The windowed indoor space offers shelter without obscuring the oceanfront view. It includes a redwood slab bar and sink, dining tables and chairs, cocktail tables, two restrooms and a full kitchen. An adjoining deck, barbecue area and covered wraparound porch provide ample space to enjoy the sea breeze.

“It’s a private, magical extension of the beach. You really feel like you are a VIP,” says Stacie. Looking out onto the gauzy seashore from the cozy, softly lit interior of the Moonstone Beach House, it’s hard to disagree. →

Set against a backdrop of old growth redwoods along the banks of the Eel River on 26-acre Luna Farm in Redcrest, The River Orchard offers a serene locale that celebrates nature and the bounty of the

land. Just a seven-minute drive off U.S. Highway 101 through Founders Grove, the River Orchard offers a farm-to-table wedding experience unlike any other.

Humboldt County native with more than a decade of professional cooking experience. After years of working in esteemed kitchens, catering dozens of events and hosting successful pop-up restaurants, Boyce, ready to try something new, partnered with Fred and Amy Diekmeyer, the owners of the organic vegetable farm Luna Farm. “I wanted to create a space where family and friends can gather for a special event in our beautiful nook of the world,” Boyce says.

Boyce’s vision for the River Orchard is shaped by values of the surrounding community. “Growing up here in Humboldt, fresh, sustainable food and seasonal eating have always been important,” she says. These are the principles that guide the farm-to-table experience at the River Orchard. “It made sense to do weddings. I have catered so many and my friends [Fred and Amy] have a gorgeous space. I wanted to make sustainability a cornerstone of the venue, and I had this vision that I would work very intimately

with couples and customize their menu with them.”

Couples interested in the venue can request a tour. Once they’ve determined it’s the right fit and booked their dates, they’ll consult with Boyce on the menu and work with event manager Iyshwerya Seber to plan the rest. The River Orchard, nestled in a sunny, fertile valley surrounded by fruit trees and forests beyond, boasts picnic-style redwood slab tables and seating for up to 200 guests under a rustic redwood pergola. Silverware, glassware, flatware and linens are also included in the rental, so couples can focus on details like decorations and entertainment.

The River Orchard celebrates the bounty of the region and showcases what makes Humboldt County special, creating a magical, memorable experience for couples and guests alike. Last season marked the venue’s soft opening, hosting 10 lovely events. “It’s very exciting,” says Boyce, “There’s really nothing else like it.” ©

Luxury IN A TENT

AND Comfort

“When I th I nk of o as I s, I think of luxury and comfort,” Molly Simmons says. And that’s what she and her husband, Levi, strived for with the Oasis Tent Rentals just a year ago.

Molly wanted to create a service where campers wouldn’t have to worry about lifting a finger for their glamping experience. Whether their tent rentals are for newlyweds or for a group of people looking to relax, Oasis Tent Rentals offers a lounge and sleeping accommodations for guests, and provides everything a grand camping experience may need.

“My goal was really to make it fully encompassing everything that you can want. We have a

cooler, we’ve got games, we have a speaker, we’ve got little twinkly lights, I mean we even have a coat rack, we’ve got everything,” Simmons says. “I want [our clients] to be able to walk in, enjoy [themselves], and leave. That’s it. … The only thing they have to do is be leisurely and hang out.”

Molly is inspired by her mom, Megan Boos, who established and owns Stitch Witch, a custom embroidery shop in Fortuna. From a young age, Simmons remembers her dad often being away at sea for work, and her mom making the decision to start her own business to stay home with her and her brother. Now, 26 years later, Simmons and her husband Levi, who hope to start a family of

their own one day, also wanted to be able to work and spend time together.

One day while scrolling through the internet, Molly saw a 20-foot bell tent. “I thought, ‘Wow, that is really cute. I bet I could decorate it and rent it out and people would want to hang out there.’” So last year, with help from her mom and her husband, she was able to start their new business Oasis Tent Rentals, a fully furnished glamping service for Humboldt County residents looking to spruce up their special events, birthdays and, of course, weddings.

Oasis Tent Rentals offers several packages that include a variety of set-ups, but each weatherproof tent comes fully equipped with a sleeper sofa, (including linens, if needed), carpets and coffee tables. There are even options for wooden furniture like antique side tables.

“It’s basically like a mobile hotel room,” says Levi. “It’s all the comforts you need in a hotel room, but outside.”

Creating luxury and comfort means making sure all the furniture in each tent is in super comfy condition and is as beautifully vintage as she can find. When they first started to shop for furniture last year, Molly says she and her mother would go thrift shopping and travel to estate sales throughout the county to try to bring the vision of Oasis Tent Rentals to life.

Molly says she selects each item intentionally, making sure that furniture and amenities are

exactly what she would want herself: comfortable and inclusive of all body shapes and types.

“We are heavy people, always have been, and so, my goal was to make sure that everything that we have [in the tents], I can use. If I can’t use it, I’m not gonna buy it,” Molly says, adding that there have been times when she wasn’t able to enjoy an event or experience because of her weight — an awkwardness she doesn’t want to create for anyone else. “Maybe the person booking us isn’t our size, but maybe the people who they invite are and can enjoy the tent, and I want them to have the same exact experience that everyone else is having.”

Oasis Tent Rentals delivers tent set ups practically anywhere in the county. In their first year, the Simmonses set up tents at locations from the Humboldt Bay Social Club to the Barn at Fernbridge, Pamplin Grove and even as far east as Ruth Lake.

The Simmonses still have a bit to do in refining their business, from setting up to breaking tents down. However, they say the best part of the job is seeing their clients’ faces once everything is ready.

“The excitement that I see in people is what keeps me going, even when things get hard, like when our van broke down,” she says. “This is our dream, working together, working outdoors … we couldn’t have asked for anything better.” ÷

AND THE

Blueberry Hill Boogie Band

WEDDING ENTERTAINMENT CAN BE A DICEY and uncertain place in which to set up a career. Tastes change over the years, and any DJ or working musician in these venues will tell you finding a crowd-pleasing mix between classic, time-tested songs and new dancefloor request numbers can be daunting. As you break into the industry, it can also prove tough standing out as a fun choice, while still projecting professionalism and flexibility. Here in Humboldt, the market is even more niche and fickle — offbeat tastes can clash with tradition. The Blueberry Hill Boogie Band has a more than a few weddings under its belt and it shows. Just ask frontman Daniel Nickerson, who’s been at it for over a decade.

Starting with his very first wedding gig in his hometown of Sacramento at the tender age of 18, Nickerson knew that live performance and music was his calling. →

27

“I spent some years in Portland getting college educated and ended up playing banjo in a bluegrass band called Max’s Midnight Kitchen,” Nickerson says. “From 2013 to 2015, I played probably 20-plus weddings and special events with that group.”

Moving to Humboldt County in 2015, Nickerson set himself up at Arcata’s beloved artist residency spot, the Sanctuary, where he helped run the music venue, art space and recording studio for the next five years, all the while honing his craft. He spent the period from 2018 to the 2020 pandemic playing with the James Zeller Trio,

where he cut his teeth in the Humboldt live music scene, playing more than 100 live shows and restaurant dinner gigs, both around the county and down in the Bay Area. He also managed to work on his special events CV, playing, by his estimation, between 40 and 50 weddings, anniversaries, bar mitzvahs, holiday parties and birthdays.

“I love playing weddings or any sort of celebration,” Nickerson notes, when asked about hired specialty gigs. “My favorite type of gigs are when the band isn’t the center of attention, but is part of a social gathering, providing the

soundtrack to a bunch of people eating, drinking, talking, dancing and reveling … sharing the things that make us human.”

By mid-2020 it became obvious that, with the live music scene all but disappeared due to the pandemic, Nickerson had time to work on a new act, something with the novelty of audience interaction turned up — something to bring out when shows started coming back. So began the Blueberry Hill Boogie Band, an “ideal event band” that would incorporate “elements of object play and audience participation.” The centerpiece of that participation is called the Boogie Box, a homemade jukebox featuring more than 200 songs (although the end goal is to get to at least 300) the audience can request. Digging into his past work in stage and puppetry with his partner and bandmate Tayloranne Finch, Nickerson designed the Boogie Box as a way to beat the pandemic doldrums, while tapping into his lifelong obsession with creating mixtapes and playlists. Joined by bassist Cyrus Smith and Ms. Finch on the musical saw, Nickerson plays guitar, croons and even hits a snare and bass drum with his feet on occasion. Depending on the nature of the gig, the group has also brought in additional musicians, including a drummer and a second guitarist, and can play as raucous or as intimate as the event requires.

“The goal of selecting the songs,” Nickerson says, “has been to find a balance between the recognizable and the well-wri en, which doesn’t always go hand-in-hand in the world of American pop music.”

A quick scan of the tunes on tap confirms this. Nickerson keeps an updated playlist on Spotify for potential clients, as well as his own edification, with songs from artists as diverse as Lou Reed, Aretha Franklin, Kate Bush, Fats Waller and Tears for Fears. The scope of the project is impressive, with a list of tunes spanning more than 50 years, from the 1930s through the 1980s, across diverse genres. Nickerson also strives for an element of narrative in his song selection, something that he has honed in his work as a DJ, both for live events and his time as →

While relatively new to the scene, the Blueberry Hill Boogie Band has already played a fair number of live gigs, including weddings in the summer of 2022, and is hoping to book more for this wedding season. These events are more than just a profession for Nickerson, they’re a personal passion.

“I think of music as a social service: to put people in a good mood, to ease anxiety, to o er folks the opportunity to express themselves through dance and play at gatherings,” says Nickerson. “Before recorded sound, a party wasn’t a party until people started jamming.”

VENUES, CONT.

Our story, renewed

For 40 years, the beautiful Fieldbrook Winery has been the premiere wedding venue for all of Humboldt. Our location five miles off the coast guarantees the best weather of all in midsummer — not too hot, not too cold, protected from direct ocean winds. Gorgeous old ponds teaming with wildlife, quaint buildings and a cellar full of old barrels, landscaped grounds, bubbling fountains, a stage for live music and a courtyard for dancing — even a regulation court to play bocce in your elegant wedding attire. A photographer’s dream.

Weddings were suspended in 2022-23 as the winery remodeled its catering Kitchen to become a full service restaurant.

The Tasting Room reopened in March 2023 serving prepared appetizers, small plates and other delicious wine-friendly fare. In April the new Fieldbrook Winery kitchen is opening serving wood-fire pizza, and in May live music returns every weekend. Having a bridal or baby shower, or significant birthday? We can set up a semi-private area on a day of your choice. Use the “small parties” under “reservations” on our website for more information.

Because the Tasting Room and new Fieldbrook Winery Kitchen is open every weekend, we will only be offering a limited number of summer weddings in 2024. If you are interested in being on a wait list for available dates, email fieldbrookwinery@gmail.com.
